Notes: Had an automatic shifter. Came out of nowhere to win Maple Grove using a unique automatic transmission. Listed times from The Drag Racing List December 86/January 87, Volume 1, Number 9. | Don attempted to qualify at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, but his best of 7.71/178.57 was good for the first alternate. At the NHRA Gatornationals, a 7.63/181.08 qualified #12. A 7.74/179.79 in the first round, lost to Gordie Rivera's 7.55/181. Beverly qualified in the dreaded #9 spot at Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals with a 7.63/180.57. The #9 spot was dreaded because you had to run the #1 qualifier in the first round. Warren Johnson qualified #1, and sure enough, he beat Don in the first round. At the NHRA Cajun Nationals, Beverly qualified on the "bump" with a 7.71/179.74. He slowed to an 8.04/144.88 in the first round, that lost to Don Coonce's 7.79/176. He failed to qualify at the NHRA Springnationals, where he 7.73/180.25 best was the third alternate for the show. Things were much better at the NHRA Grandnationals, where he ran 7.64/180.72 to qualify #8. A 7.70/180.14 beat Frank Iaconio's 7.77/178 in the first round, but he fouled away a 7.79 against Bruce Allen in round two. He qualified #9 again at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals with a 7.54/181.52 but lost to low qualifier Bob Glidden in the first round. Another non-qualifier came at the NHRA Mile High Nationals in Dever. There, Don's 8.14/168.41 best was the first alternate. He rebounded by qualifying #7 at Brainerd for the NHRA Northstar Nationals with a 7.69/181.08. Unfortunately, he lost to Jerry Eckman in the first round. Beverley ran great at Indy for the NHRA US Nationals. He qualified #7 with a 7.53/182.92. A 7.63/182.30 beat Joe Clark's quicker 7.59/179 in the first round. In round two, a 7.58/182.29 beat Don Campanello, sending him into the semifinals for the first time in '86. There, he ran into eventual winner Glidden. Don ran a strong 7.53/182.96 but lost to Bob's 7.41/189. The next event showed that Don Beverly was for real. It was at Maple Grove on September 14 for the NHRA Keystone Nationals. Don qualified #4 with a strong 7.48/184.99. A 7.60/184.80 advanced past a fouling Eckman in round one, while in round two, his 7.49/184.88 advanced when Butch Leal fouled against him. Coonce's 7.73/163 fell behind in the semifinals as Beverly moved into the final with a 7.50/184.38. In the final, he met Allen in the Reher-Morrison Camaro. Don was not the underdog in the final, as Allen had run a 7.51 best in eliminations. Don scored his first-ever NHRA Pro Stock win in the final with a 7.54/184.42 over Bruce's 7.57/184.

Notes: WJ entered the season strong as he had won the season-ending NHRA World Finals in '83 and was looking for more in '84. At the season-opening NHRA Winternationals at Pomona, he qualified #3 with a 7.71. Johnson lasted until the semifinals before he fouled against Frank Iaconio. Still, he set Top Speed of the meet for the Pro Stock class at 180.36. He showed his stuff at Gainesville in March for the NHRA Gatornationals, there a 7.662/181.81 qualified #4, and he went on to win. A 7.682/182.55 (Top Speed and a new NHRA record) beat a fouling Johnny Downey. His 7.677/181.45 took out Don Campanello, who also fouled in round two. In the semifinals, WJ slowed to 7.747/172.74, but it was still enough to beat Butch Leal's 7.75/175. This put him into the final against Iaconio. Warren made his best run of the weekend, a 7.643/180.72, to get the victory over Frank's 7.73/180. Atlanta was the next stop on the NHRA tour for the Southern Nationals. WJ set Low ET and Top Speed in qualifying #1 7.70/181.81. In round one, he beat Mark Yuill with a 7.75/179.64, but he lost to Lee Shepherd in round two. It was not without controversy as Shepherd's Camaro lost its hood on the run. Warren insisted on having the car weighed to assure that it still weighed in at the legal 2,350 lbs. Even without the hood, the Texas Camaro was legal. He was the top qualifier again at the NHRA Cajun Nationals at Baton Rouge with a 7.65 (Low ET) at 181.45. Unfortunately, he lost to Roy Hill in the first round. He had Low ET and Top Speed at the NHRA Springnationals while qualifying #1 with a 7.71/181.08. But once again, he lost early; this time, Gordie Rivera gated him in the second round, and his 7.83 beat Johnson's quicker 7.74. These early losses would come back to haunt Warren and the end of the year for the points championship. He pulled it all together at the NHRA Grandnationals, where a 7.68/182.55 (Low ET and Top Speed) qualified #1. He beat Joe Lepone, Ken Dondero, and Don Coonce to meet with Bob Glidden in the final. Bob's T-Bird was getting stronger as the year progressed, and in the final, his 7.69/180 narrowly lost to WJ's 7.68/182.18. At the NHRA Summernationals at Englishtown, Warren was finally out-qualified for the first time in four races. His 7.68/180.72 (Top Speed) was second only to Glidden's 7.67. He beat Rich Marino in round one, before losing to Shepherd in the second round. WJ was back on top at Denver for the NHRA Mile High Nationals, where he set an 8.02 track record at 172.74 in qualifying #1. He beat Gene Fasching, Leal, and in the semifinals, he beat Glidden's 8.13/169 with an 8.06/171.10. In the finals, he met Shepherd. This was Johnson's day as he won with an 8.07/171.75 over Lee's 8.14/166. In August, Warren took his eighth NHRA National victory at the Northstar Nationals at Brainerd. He had "only" qualified #3 with a 7.76/181.08 (Top Speed), but he beat Jerry Eckman, Coonce, and Glidden to meet Shepherd again in the final. It was a good race, but Lee's 7.76/177 finished runner-up to Johnson's 7.75/180.36. He was sure closing the points gap between himself and Shepherd with his late-season surge, and it continued at the NHRA US Nationals. He qualified #2 with a 7.66/182.18, and he improved to 7.63 in the first round, over Coonce. In round two, a 7.64/182.18 beat Ronnie Manchester, and in the semis, another 7.63 beat Rivera. In the final, he faced Glidden. Bob had been running about a tenth slower in eliminations, but in the final, he picked up to a 7.65/180 that almost beat WJ's 7.63/181.45. Surprisingly, for only the third NHRA National event of '84, Warren failed to get Top Speed of the meet. It looked like he had a good chance of winning the NHRA Pro Stock Championship going into the World Finals with a 42 point advantage over Shepherd. A 7.75/181.08 qualified #5, but things took an unexpected turn in the first round. Matched against Rickie Smith, the Oldsmobile could only muster a 7.97/175.09 that lost to Smith's 7.89/174. The season and any hopes for the '84 world championship came to a close. Still, it was an excellent season for WJ, his best since entering Pro Stock with five wins and a second-place finish in the points standings. Photo from Baton Rouge 84, where WJ was the low qualifier.

Notes: Ken ran 7.772/178.57 to qualify #9 at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. He faced low qualifier Butch Leal in the first round, and his 7.838/178.21 finished second best to Leal's 7.71. At the NHRA Gatornationals, he qualified #7 with a 7.734/177.51. Ken had an unusual race in the first round. He raced alternate Reid Whisnant, who got into the field when Sam Carroll broke in qualifying. Dondero ran a 7.814/175.78 in their first-round race, but Reid recorded an unreal (maybe too unreal) 7.615 at only 174.41 to win. Observers suspected a rear-wheel start (the rear wheel broke the beam instead of the front). In the second round, Reid slowed to a 7.89 loss. It was a fabulously close race - Dondero's .450 to .646 holeshot meant that only .003 seconds separated the cars at the finish line! Pretty sure Ken wasn't too happy about it. And Reid's 7.615 was not equaled again on the NHRA national event trail until the end of the year when Bob Glidden duplicated it. The third NHRA event was the Southern Nationals at Atlanta, where a 7.830/178.92 qualified Ken in the #8 spot. He advanced past round one with a 7.88/176.47 when Roy Hill fouled against him. In round two, he beat Leal with a 7.833/177.51, but in the semifinals, he lost to Don Campanello., who stepped up to a 7.835 to hold off Ken's 7.869/176.47. This was another heartbreaker - Dondero again got the holeshot, .480 to .510, and the end result was a .004 second win for Campanello The next stop on the NHRA tour was at Baton Rouge for the Cajun Nationals. A 7.773/177.86 qualified #7, but a 7.886/177.16 in the opening round of eliminations lost to Mark Yuill's quick-leaving 7.945/173.07 (a margin of victory of .034 seconds). Dondero then stopped off at Capitol raceway to win its Pro Stock Shootout event. He beat Ronnie Manchester in the final. He was at Martin, Mich, for the PHR Championships, where he ran 7.73 to qualify #3. Once again, he lost out early, back on the NHRA trail for the Springnationals. He qualified #8 at 7.843/177.86. Ken won round one over Andy Mannarino (7.814/173.47 to 7.939/174.08) and made it into round two, losing to Mark Yuill again when he ran an off-pace 9-second run. Shortly after that, he picked up a win at the Super Stock Nationals held at Maple Grove. It was an eight-car show, and his 7.73/179.28 qualified #2 behind WJ's 7.69/180. Ken ran another 7.73 in the first round, to take out Joe Anderson and a semifinal 7.75 stopped the only Mopar in the show, Reid Whisnant's. He faced Don Campanello in the final, and Dondero was like a bracket racer, running 7.75/177.16 to win over Don's 7.80/174. Another second-round loss came at the NHRA Grandnationals in Canada, where Ken qualified #5 with a 7.725/180.36. Ken beat Roy Hill in round one, 7.764/179.28 to 7.89/177, but he lost to eventual winner WJ in round two, 7.720/181.81 to 7.781/178.92. He qualified third at the NHRA Summernationals with a 7.704/180.00, but he got upset in the first round, by Manchester, 7.74/177 to 7.830/177.51. He did not go to Denver. Ken qualified #9 at Brainerd with a 7.850/175.78. That put him up against Bob Glidden in round one, and Bob got the win, 7.73/178, to Ken's 7.823/177.16. At the US Nationals at Indy, his 7.778/182.55 qualified #11. In round one, Ken's 7.793/181.08 beat Butch Leal's 7.84/175. He cut a good light in round two, and his 7.822/180.00 held on to win over Joe Lepone's quicker 7.798/177 (.025 second margin of victory). His run ended in the semifinals, where Bob Glidden's 7.72 beat his 7.825/176.81. In October, he ran a 7.766/178.92 to qualify eighth at the NHRA World Finals. Amazingly, Mark Yuill got another massive holeshot on him in round one, and eeked out the win, 7.850/174.41 to 7.758/179.28 (.005 seconds margin of victory). Ken had so many close, close races that he either won or lost on holeshots. A great showing for the Panella Racing team in 1984; they finished 7th in the NHRA.

Notes: Frank joined a Kenny Bernstein-led Budweiser super team. Photo from Milan, MI, 1985. | Frank was known for running Chevys since the late '60s. He had done very well with the bow-ties, finishing second in NHRA Pro Stock standings for three years. He had won 10 NHRA national events and 19 runners-up. So, it was very strange to see him in a Ford for '85. Kenny Bernstein first approached Iaconio at the '84 Cajun Nationals about joining his Budweiser-Motorcraft Ford team for '85. Arlen Fadely had also approached Frank to run an Olds for the '85 season. Near the end of '84, Frank decided to join the Ford team. He had run Don Ness cars for several years, so of course, Ness was contracted to build the T-Bird. It was Ness' first Pro Stock Ford. The car failed tech inspection at its debut at Pomona for the Winternationals. Don Ness fixed the roll cage issue on the spot, but Frank's 7.78 best (third alternate) missed the show when qualifying ended. Things went much better at Gainesville for the Gatornationals. He qualified #5 with a 7.70/182.11. In the first round, Sam Gianino fouled against him. In round two, his 7.71/183.00 lost to Bob Glidden's 7.55/184. At the next NHRA event, the Southern Nationals at Atlanta, he again qualified #5 with a 7.75/179.06. He faced a poorly qualified (#13) Glidden in the first round. Iaconio had problems and shut off to a 12.31 that lost to Bob's 7.93. Glidden got Frank again at the next event, the Cajun Nationals. It took Iaconio four attempts to qualify. He shut down in the first three passes, but a 7.73/179.28 on the fourth pass qualified #9. In the first round, he ran 7.75/175.09 to beat low qualifier Bruce Allen in Reher-Morrison Camaro, who shut off to 8.50. In round two, his 7.78/178.92 advanced when Gordie Rivera got out of shape and shut off to 8.17/135. The semifinals saw his 7.73/179.06 fall to Glidden's 7.68/182. Frank got another semifinal finish at the next race, the Springnationals. A 7.66/180.94 qualified #4, and a first-round 7.73/179.49 beat Ron Manchester. A 7.74/178.92 in round two beat Jerry Eckman and advanced him into the semis to meet Allen. Allen's 7.68/176 beat his 7.74/178.42. The next stop on the NHRA trail was in Canada for the Grandnationals. Frank qualified #3 with a strong 7.55/183.89. An off-pace 7.71/171.36 in the first round, lost to Don Campanello's 7.68/180. At the NHRA Summernationals, he qualified #5 at 7.62/184.65, but fouled against Frank Sanchez in the first round. Budds Creek held its annual Pro Stock Open race, and Frank lasted until the semifinal before losing to eventual winner Roy Hill. It was then off to Denver for the NHRA Mile High Nationals. Frank's 8.08/170.13 qualified #6, and in the opening round, his 8.09/170.77 beat Hill's 8.24/168. He ran his best time of the weekend, an 8.05/171.10, in round two, but it wasn't enough to get past Warren Johnson's 8.01/172. NHRA's next race was the Northstar Nationals at Brainerd. Frank qualified #10 with a 7.76/179.28. He improved to 7.68/180.72 in the first round, but lost to Allen's Low ET charge of 7.55/181. Iaconio had racked up enough points over the past 12 months to qualify for one of the eight spots available for the NHRA Pro Stock Challenge race held at Indianapolis in conjunction with the US Nationals. In the Challenge race, he lost to Butch Leal's 7.68/180 with a 7.72/182.26. He did pretty well at the US Nats. There, 45 cars attempted to qualify for the sixteen-car field, and his 7.69/182.26 qualified #8. Ken Dondero fouled against him in round one, and Frank's 7.75/179.49 advanced. In round two, he fell to a holeshot by Tony Christian. Tony's 7.76/177 beat his quicker 7.72/179.76. He was closer to home when NHRA stopped at Maple Grove on September 15 for the Keystone Nationals. Frank's 7.59/181.08 qualified #6, and a 7.64/179.49 got around Rivera's broken Camaro. In round two, his 7.68/180.07 lost to Johnson's 7.58/182. Best NHRA national event times were 7.556 at Sanair and 184.65 at Englishtown.

Notes: The team had a good year but could not get past the top four racers in the class. Don qualified #5 at Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals with a 7.84/175.78. He ran another 7.84 at 171.42 in the opening round to beat Ronnie Manchester's 8.07/168. He faced low qualifier Lee Shepherd in round two, and Lee's Camaro had ignition problems that slowed him to 8.68/119 while Coonce advanced with a 7.89/171.10. In the semifinal, he slowed to a 7.92/175.09 that lost to Frank Iaconio's 7.83/173. He competed at the NHRA Grandnationals in Canada, where he qualified #5 in the eight-car field. That set up a first-round meeting with low qualifier Bob Glidden. Don upset Glidden in their race; in the semifinal, he lost to the eventual winner Shepherd. He also lost to Shepherd at the NHRA Summernationals held at Englishtown in mid-July. Coonce qualified #4 with a 7.87/174.75. He ran the same numbers in round one, while beating Bubba Corzine's 7.94/173. In round two, the speed remained the same, but his ET was 7.88, which was still good enough to defeat Johnny Dowey's 7.89/174. But he fouled against Shepherd in the semifinal. Shortly after that, he was at Denver for the NHRA Mile High Nationals. This was an eight-car field, and he qualified #5 with an 8.33/166.23. in the opening round, he fouled away an 8.38 against low qualifier Glidden, who advanced at 8.16. Don's next stop was at Martin, Michigan, for the PHR Championships. It was another eight-car field, and his 7.79/174.08 qualified #3. In round one, Dowey's 7.96/173 fell to his 7.85/171.10, but he fouled against eventual winner Iaconio in the semifinal. Best times of 7.732 at Fremont and 180.72 at OCIR (7.738).

Notes: The Reher-Morrison team started the season with Shepherd qualifying #2 at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals with a 7.68/179.64. Lee beat Roy Hill in the first round, while in round two, his 7.78 beat Don Coonce's 7.89. Another 7.78 advanced in the semifinals when Bob Glidden fouled against him. That set up a final-round meeting with Frank Iaconio. These two met in the Winternationals final in '82, with Iaconio winning. This time it was Shepherd's turn as his 7.71/178.57 got the victory over Frank's 7.76/174. The competition was hot at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals. Forty-six cars attempted to qualify for the sixteen-car field. Lee led them all with a new NHRA national record of 7.62 at 181.08. He slowed down a tenth in the first round, with a 7.72/179.28, but Lee didn't need it as Joe Lepone fouled. But in round two, Iaconio ran 7.71/176 to beat Lee's 7.77/179.99. The next race was the NHRA Southern Nationals at Atlanta. Lee only qualified #5 with a 7.78/177.86, but he beat Sam Carroll, Warren Johnson, and Glidden to reach the final. There he used a holeshot 7.78/177.86 to get the victory over a strong running Don Campanello, who runner-upped with a 7.74/179. Baton Rouge was NHRA's next stop for the Cajun Nationals. There Lee would win his third title in four starts. He qualified #3 with a 7.68/182.18. He made his way into the final by getting by a fouling Glidden in the semifinals with a 7.81/176. In the final, Butch Leal also pulled a red light, and Shepherd ran 7.75/181.08 for the win. Still, another win came at the next race, the NHRA Springnationals, in June. A 7.76 qualified #3, and a 7.75/176 got him into the final when Gordie Rivera "bulbed" against him in the semifinal. This time Brad Yuill was Lee's final round victim, and a 7.75/178.57 did him in. This was Shepherd's last victory in NHRA competition. Lee failed to reach the final at the NHRA Grandnationals. He qualified #2 with a 7.68/180.72, but in the semifinals, Glidden gated him, and his 7.78 beat Shepherd's quicker 7.75. Glidden got him again at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals. Lee only qualified #6 with a 7.72. He beat Charlie Garrett in round one and WJ in round two. In the semifinals, his 7.80 beat Lepone's 7.87. This put him into the final with Bob. Glidden had the edge as he had run 7.71 in his semifinal heat. Sure enough, Glidden ran another 7.71/178 to beat the Camaro's 7.77/177.51. Lee reached the final in the next event as well, the NHRA Mile High Nationals. He qualified #2 and advanced into the final against Warren Johnson. WJ had set a track record in qualifying #1, and once again, Lee had to settle for the runner-up spot. His 8.14/166.97 was no match for the Oldsmobile driver's 8.07/171. These two would continue to run strong at Brainerd for the NHRA Northstar Nationals. Glidden stole the thunder in qualifying by qualifying #1, but Shepherd was #2 with a 7.75/178.92 while WJ was #3. The semifinals saw Lee beat Iaconio while WJ took out Glidden. It was a close final, with WJ getting the victory with a 7.75/180 over Lee's 7.76/177.16. Things didn't go too well at Indy for the NHRA US Nationals. A 7.71/178.21 qualified #4, and they picked up to a 7.66/178.21 in the first round to beat Sam Gianino, but in round two, a slipping clutch slowed the car to an 8.85 loss to Rivera. WJ went on to win his third NHRA event in a row and close the points gap. Going into the NHRA World Finals, the NHRA Pro Stock Championship was up for grabs between these two. Lee qualified #3 at 7.69/178.21, while WJ wasn't far behind in the #5 spot. But the big points race ended quickly when WJ was upset by Rickie Smith in the first round. Lee ran 7.71/178.57 to beat Lepone, and the NHRA title was his for the fourth year in a row. A round two 7.72/175.43 beat Rivera, but in the semifinals, he had problems and shut down to an 8.04/130.81 that lost to eventual winner Glidden. It was interesting to note that not in one NHRA event in '84 did Lee set Low ET or Top Speed. Quite a difference from previous years. This also said a lot about Shepherd as a driver. Even at Gainesville with the 7.62 NHRA record, Reid Whisnant had gotten Low ET with a controversial 7.61. The team was dominating the IHRA side of things as well, with all kinds of records there.

Notes: First backed up 500-inch National record at 7.822 at the 82 Winternationals, which he won over Lee Shepherd. Qualified #2 there, 7.87/174.41. Won Indy 82 with a 7.803 to 7.809 against Bob Glidden's EXP, after qualifying 4th at 7.790/174.75. | As mentioned, Frank started the '82 season by setting the NHRA record and winning the first 500 cubic inch NHRA race at the NHRA Winternationals. He qualified #2 with a 7.87/174.41 behind Shepherd's 7.84. Frank picked up to his 7.82 in the first round, with a speed of 173.41 to beat Jerry Eckman's 8.06/168. In round two, his 7.84/171.75 took out Jerry Janke and a semifinal 7.86/173.41 beat Rickie Smith's 7.95/172, setting up a Shepherd vs. Iaconio final. Both had been the only cars running 7.8s in eliminations. Lee's semifinal 7.84 gave him lane choice, but he fell off to 8.02/156 in the final while Frank got the victory with a 7.83/174.08. The battle between these two moved on to the NHRA Gatornationals where Frank's 7.83/174.75 again qualified #2 behind Lee's 7.77. In the first round, both ran 7.8s with Iaconio's 7.89/173.41 beating Mark Yuill. A second-round 7.90/173.74 beat Joe Anderson and in the semifinals, his 7.90/173.07 got him into the final against Shepherd. The two Camaros had a close race, but Lee's 7.88/174 got the win over Frank's 7.89/172.74. Atlanta was the next stop on the NHRA calendar for the Southern Nationals. Of course, the two Camaro's qualified one-two, but this time Iaconio led the pack with a 7.82/174.08. But he was upset in the first round, by Bob Glidden who qualified #5 in the eight-car field. Lee went on to win the race. Both Shepherd and Iaconio took their 500 cubic inch cars to Bristol for the IHRA Springnationals to test how their cars would do against the mountain motored cars. They did pretty well as once again the two Camaros met in the final. It was another close race, but Shepherd's 7.89 got the victory over Iaconio's 7.92. By this time, Frank must have been getting sick of a certain white Camaro from Texas, but he kept on running into it in the finals. It happened again at the NHRA Cajun Nationals. Frank's 7.88 qualified #2 behind you-know-who's Camaro at 7.81. An 8.04 in round one, beat Jim Meyer's surprising Mopar while a 7.94/173 beat Warren Johnson's Starfire in the semifinals. Lee and Frank lined up and once again Lee grabbed the victory with a 7.90/173 over Frank's 7.93/173. Things went a little different as Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals, Frank's best of 7.84/173.74 in qualifying slipped to the #3 spot in the field. This was due to Glidden slipping his little EXP into second behind Shepherd in the qualifying order. What this ended up doing was setting up a Shepherd vs. Iaconio match in the semifinals rather than the final. Lee caught a great light and his 7.96/173 held on to win over Frank's quicker 7.93/172.41. At least Glidden stopped Shepherd in the final, which was good for Iaconio as far as the points went. He grabbed a win at the Super Stock Magazine Nationals at Maple Grove near the end of June. He beat Don Campanello and Bob Ingles to reach the finals with times of 7.96/170.77 and 7.94/171.10. In the final, he faced Andy Mannarino and his 8.02/171.10 took home the trophy over Andy's 8.12/170. He then followed the NHRA tour to Canada for the Grandnationals early in July. He qualified #3 and lasted until the semifinals before losing to Shepherd. He slipped to the #5 (7.93) spot in qualifying at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals. An opening round 7.95 beat Dave Hutchens' 8.01, but he lined up against Shepherd in round two and he attempted to gain an advantage on the 'tree and fouled. After that, Frank was at Atco for a mid-week Pro Stock race. He was performing really well, running 7.75 twice and a 7.77 at 178. Unfortunately, he lost to Warren Johnson in the final. Frank then won Indy, over a great field of cars. His best times came at the NHRA Golden Gate Nationals at Fremont, where he ran 7.747 at 176.12.

He was at Martin, Michigan, for the PHR Championships in August. It was just an eight-car field, and he qualified #4 with a 7.80/177.16. Unfortunately, he was upset by Rickie Smith in round one. Don was at Brainerd later in the month for the NHRA Northstar Nationals. He qualified #6 with a 7.90/178.92. in the opening round, he defeated alternate, Jim Elhen but he lost to Iaconio in round two. He went to Indy for the NHRA US Nationals, where his 7.82/180.36 qualified #6. But he slowed to 7.90/176.47 in the first round, that fell to Roy Hill's quick-leaving 7.91/175.

Notes: Kenny failed to make the field at the first two NHRA races of '86, but he did qualify at the Southern Nationals in Atlanta. His 7.68/183.29 was good for the "bump" spot. He lost to Jerry Eckman in the first round. A 7.66/180.07 qualified #13 at Baton Rouge for the Cajun Nationals. His 7.76/178.11 lost to Bruce Allen's 7.65/180 in the first round. At the Springnationals, he qualified #11 with a 7.65/179.82. A first-round 7.80/174.31 lost to Joe Lepone's 7.70/180. He ran at the Super Stock Nationals. It was an eight-car show, and he qualified #4 with a 7.64/180.00. He beat Lee Dean in the first round before losing to Lepone's 7.66/181 in the semifinal with a 7.76/177.51. After qualifying well at the last few events, he was disappointed at the Grandnationals when he only ran a best of 7.86/177.23 that failed to qualify (sixth alternate). He ran much better at Englishtown for the Summernationals, but his 7.610/179.85 (sixth alternate) still failed to make the field. That was his best ET of the year and a fourth alternate 7.625/184.34 at Indy was his best speed.

Notes: Campanello qualified #8 at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals with a 7.741/180.36. His 7.80/178.92 beat a fouling Brad Yuill in the opening round of eliminations. Unfortunately, Don fouled in the second round with a 7.82, losing to the eventual winner Warren Johnson's 7.67. His next stop was in Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals in April. A 7.80/177.86 qualified #6, and in round one, a 7.82 beat "Dyno Don" Nicholson's 7.93. He then beat Ronnie Manchester and Ken Dondero in Bob Panella's Camaro to reach the final against Lee Shepherd. His should have been Campanello's race to win, but a late leaving 7.74/179.28 finished runner-up to Lee's 7.78/177. He qualified #13 at Baton Rouge for the NHRA Cajun Nationals, but he fouled away a 7.83 against Butch Leal's 7.79 in the opening round. Shortly after that, he was at Martin, Michigan, for the PHR Championships. It was a sixteen-car show, and his 7.82 qualified #9. He lasted until round two before fouling against Bob Glidden. Don ran really well at Maple Grove for the Super Stock Nationals. He qualified #5 in the eight-car field with a 7.79/178.92. That set up a first-round meeting with low qualifier Johnson. The two had a burn-down on the line with neither driver wanting to stage first. Warren finally staged, and Don followed, and the lite went green. Campanello timed it perfectly, and his 7.84 won while Johnson fouled away a 7.69. He went on to beat Frank Iaconio's 7.88 in the semifinals with a 7.82. This put him into the final against Dondero. Don tried hard, but his 7.80/174.08 finished runner-up to Dondero's 7.75/177. He failed to qualify at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals. Don also ran 7.79 at the Super Stock Nationals at Maple Grove. His Englishtown and Baton Rouge numbers were his NHRA national event bests for the year. He had a few good runner-up finishes, too.

Notes: Lepone qualified #8 at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals with a 7.758/179.28. He beat Sam Carroll in the opening round, 7.82/177 to 7.89 (foul), before losing a close one to Bob Glidden in round two, 7.82/174 to 7.85/177. He continued to qualify well at the NHRA Gatornationals, where his 7.744/179.28 qualified #9. The only problem with that is that it set up a first-round meeting with the low qualifier, Lee Shepherd. Joe must have been a little nervous as he fouled away a 7.91 while Shepherd ran 7.72 to advance. Atlanta was the next stop for the team for the NHRA Southern Nationals. Once again, Joe got the car qualified, running 7.854/177.16 for the #11 spot. In the first round of competition, his opponent, Don Coonce, broke, and Joe ran 7.89/176 to advance. But in round two, Glidden had his number, and Bob's 7.74/178 beat Lepone's 7.85/176. Qualifying wasn't too bad at Baton Rouge as only 20 cars showed for the sixteen-car field. Joe ran 7.825/178.57 for the #11 spot. But in round one, his 7.93/177 lost to the eventual winner Shepherd's 7.76/181. Joe qualified #9 again at Columbus with a 7.849/176.12, and WJ got him again in round one, 7.76/180 to 7.96/174. The team qualified #9 yet again in Quebec (7.765/178.92), and again, WJ won round one when Joe gambled and lost with a redlighting 8.04. The team qualified #12 at Englishtown with a 7.780/180.36. They upset DOn Coonce in round one, 7.79/177 to 7.94/163, and beat Gordie Rivera in round two, 7.80/176 to Gordie's redlight-initiated 7.84. Joe got the holeshot on Lee Shepherd in the semis, but the Reher-Morrison team came around him on the top end to take a 7.80/177 to 7.87/176 win. Joe qualified #3 at Denver with an 8.110/168.85. He made it to the semis with wins over Gordie Rivera and Rich Marino. But again, he faced Lee Shepherd and lost another close one, 8.12/168 to 8.19/171. They qualified #10 at Brainerd at 7.850/175.78, which put them up against nemesis Lee Shepherd (but in round one). Shepherd won, 7.80/176 to 7.85/176. At Indy, the Palmer Bros. Team broke into the top half of the field again, hissing 7.742/181.81 for #7. But Ken Dondero grabbed a holeshot win in round one, 7.82/180, to their 7.798/177. They raced at the World Finals to wrap up their NHRA tour. Joe ran 7.789/177.86 to grab the #11 spot. That put him up against - you guessed it - Lee Shepherd in round one. Again, close was no cigar, as Shepherd took the 7.71/178 to 7.79/177 win. A solid year for the team. Lepone finished eighth in NHRA's season-long points chase. Did Joe run 7.72 away from the NHRA tour?

Notes: Lepone could not run at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals as "Grumpy's" new car wasn't ready. Joe qualified #5 at the NHRA Gatornationals with a 7.73/177.16. A first-round 7.72/176.81 beat John Brumley's 7.92/174, but his 7.79/176.42 lost to eventual winner Lee Shepherd's 7.70/180 in the second round. The next NHRA race was the Southern Nationals at Atlanta, where the PRO fields were eight-car fields. Lepone had no trouble, running 7.82/174.41 for the #3 spot in the show. A 7.87/172.08 in the first round beat Johnny Dowey's 7.95/173. He got out on Reid Whisnant in the semifinal, and his 7.90/173.07 held on to win over the Mopar's 7.88/175. In the final, he ran Shepherd. Joe pushed the 'tree a little too hard and fouled, handing the win to Lee. Joe shut down to a 9.02. On May 1, he won the US Manufacturer's Championships at Maple Grove. He qualified second for the eight-car show with a 7.89. He made three 7.90 passes to win the race. He beat Wally Balchunas and Bob Harris before beating Ronnie Manchester's 7.98/170 in the final for the title. Lepone's final round times were 7.90/171.10. At the end of May, he was at Baton Rouge for the NHRA Cajun Nationals. This was another eight-car field; unfortunately, his 7.84/174.41 qualified #5. That was bad as it set up a first-round meeting with low qualifier Warren Johnson. In the opening round, WJ's 7.75/177 beat Joe's 7.92/174.41. NHRA's next race was the Springnationals at Columbus. A 7.87/174.41 qualified #7. In the opening round, his 7.94/172.74 defeated Mark Yuill's 8.00/172. In round two, his 7.94/173.45 fell to Frank Iaconio's 7.84/173. He also qualified #7 at the NHRA Grandnationals in Canada, but he didn't stick around long as he lost to eventual winner Shepherd in the first round. Early in P/S, Englishtown was a race where Bill Jenkins or his driver, Larry Lombardo, ran really well. The magic had gone away by the '80s, and in '83, things weren't any better. Joe qualified #9 with a 7.90/175.09 at the Summernationals, but in the opening round, Iaconio's 7.76/178 put his 7.89/175.43 on the trailer. Joe's best NHRA national event times came at the World Finals at OCIR at 7.662/180.00, where he went to the semis. Did he run 180.72 somewhere this year? Photo from Brainerd 1983.

Notes: Roy started the '83 season by debuting his new Capri at Tucson for the AHRA Winternationals, where a 9.00 qualified #5. He lost to Jim Feurer in the first round. He impressed at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, where he out-qualified many heavy hitters with a 7.857 173.41, good for #3 in the field. In the opening round, his 7.86/174.08 beat Butch Leal's 7.90/177. He soloed in round two as John Brumley left for another race. Roy got as far as the semifinals, where an 8.12/168.53 lost to Bob Glidden's 7.88/176. At the Gatornationals, a 7.84/176.81 qualified #14, but his 7.99/159.01 lost to Rickie Smith's 7.76/175 in the first round. He did not race at Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals. Hill was also running hard on the IHRA Circuit, and in May, he destroyed his new Capri in a crash in North Carolina. He was not hurt and used his old Capri until a new car was ready. The next NHRA event was the Cajun Nationals at Baton Rouge. It was just an eight-car field, and Hill's 7.84/175.43 qualified #6. In the opening round, his 7.92/177.16 fell to Frank Iaconio's 7.82/177. At Columbus, for the NHRA Springnationals, a 7.92/174.41 qualified #10. Unfortunately, the car broke in the opening round against Glidden. He had difficulties at Englishtown and could only run a best of 8.15/167.91 (fifth alternate) in qualifying. He did not attend the NHRA Mile High Nationals but was at Brainerd for the NHRA Northstar Nationals, where his 7.99/172.41 qualified #10. He lost to Iaconio in the first round. Almost 50 cars showed at Indy for the NHRA U.S. Nationals as everyone wants to do their best for their sponsor. Hill's 7.88/174.75 qualified #14. In round one, his 7.91/175.09 defeated Don Campanello's 7.90/176. In the second round, his 7.92/175.09 fell to Lee Shepherd's 7.76/178. Roy ran 7.775 at NHRA Fremont and 180.00 at the World Finals for his best NHRA times.

Notes: Darrell qualified #12 at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals with a 7.53/182.88. In the first round, his 7.52/179.03 beat Lee Dean's 7.55/183. He lost to Larry Morgan in round two. At the NHRA Gatornationals, a 7.49/186.06 qualified #7. In round one, his 7.53/185.14 beat Kenny Delco and in round two, his 7.59/180 stopped Joe Lepone Jr. who ran a quicker 7.58/180. Darrell got out of shape in the semifinals and shut off, losing to Bob Glidden. Alderman did not race at the NHRA Winston All-Stars race, but he attempted to qualify at Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals. He was the first alternate with a best of 7.58/182.59. The next NHRA race was the Cajun Nationals at Baton Rouge. Darrell qualified #13 with a 7.64/182.51. Unfortunately, the race was postponed one week due to rain and Darrell was unable to return for the rain date as he had plans to race his mountain motored car at Bristol for the IHRA Springnationals. He qualified on the "bump" at Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals with a 7.64/177.72. In the opening round, he fouled away a 7.68 against Gary Brown who advanced with a 7.66. Alderman did not make the trip to Canada for the NHRA Grandnationals, but he was at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals. A 7.57/182.68 qualified #12. But in the first round, his 7.63/181.67 lost to Bruce Allen's 7.56/183. He skipped over the NHRA Mile High Nationals at Denver, but returned to the tour at Brainerd for the NHRA Northstar Nationals. He qualified in the top half (#5) of the field with a 7.60/182.11. Darrell improved to 7.58/182.33 in the first round, to beat Reid Whisnant's 7.85/146, but he came up against Glidden in round two and Bob's T-Bird was flying, running 7.4s at will. Sure enough, Bob pounded out a 7.47/185 to send Alderman back to the trailer with a 7.61/181.92. The NHRA US Nationals at Indy was crazy, with 52 cars attempting to qualify for the sixteen-car field. Darrell ran 7.48/189.19 to qualify #2 behind Glidden's 7.42. In round one, a 7.56 narrowly beat Tony Christian's 7.57. A quick-leaving 7.59/188.00 in round two beat Kenny Delco's quicker 7.57/182 and he showed his driving skill in the semifinal, where he left on Warren Johnson and hung on to win with his 7.59/188.16 beating WJ's 7.53/189. He faced that pesky T-Bird in the final, and despite running his best time of eliminations, a 7.52/189.15, he lost to Glidden's 7.43/188. Photo from Indy 87, where the team was runner-up.

Notes: Sam qualified #15 at the Gatornationals with a 7.83/176.81. Unfortunately, he was unable to run in eliminations, and first alternate Reid Whisnant filled in. At the NHRA Southern Nationals at Atlanta in April, Sam again qualified. This time he ran a 7.86/176.12 for the #13 spot in the field. A first-round 7.99 lost to Lee Shepherd's 7.85. Sam had one of his best outings at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals in July. He qualified #15 with a 7.79 and made it all the way to the semifinals before his 7.90 lost to Bob Glidden's 7.71. He won an eight-car show at Moroso Motorsports Park in September. He ran 7.79/177.16 to qualify #2 and then beat Jeff Taylor's 8.01/175 in the first round, with a 7.90/173.41. In the semifinals, he advanced when Jeff Velde fouled. A final round 7.94/170.77 took the victory over Whisnant's ailing Daytona at 8.70/105. Sam tried hard to make the field at the season-ending NHRA World Finals, but his best of 7.84 was good for the first alternate.

Notes: Warren Johnson started the '87 season by winning the NHRA Winternationals at Pomona. He qualified #2 with a 7.43/188.20 (Top Speed and a new track record), behind Bob Glidden's 7.42/186. In the first round, he ran another 7.43 at 187.50 to beat Kenny Delco. In round two, he stopped Gordie Rivera's 7.50/183 with a 7.46/186.60. He then set Low ET in the semifinals with a 7.403 (track record) at 186.91 to beat Larry Morgan. He faced Butch Leal in the final, and Leal hadn't been out of the 7.5s all day. But Leal was always sharp on the lights, so it would still be a good race. But Butch didn't get his usual starting line advantage, and Warren's 7.43/187.22 got the win over Leal's 7.52/184. After such a great start to the season, it was surprising that Warren failed to qualify at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals. He was plagued by tire shake and then dropped a valve. His best of 7.56/187.03 was good for the third alternate. He made up for it by winning April's NHRA Winston Invitational race at the Texas Motorplex. It was an eight-car show, and his 7.33/187.30 qualified #2 behind Glidden's 7.31/189. Johnson then ran 7.37/187.42 over Don Coonce's 7.47/185 and 7.32/187.98 to beat Jerry Eckman's 7.42/184. He faced Joe Lepone in the final, and Warren's 7.38/187.57 earned the title over Lepone's 7.51/183. He then went into a long dry spell. At the NHRA Southern Nationals at Atlanta, he qualified #5 with a 7.49/186.10, and an opening-round 7.44/185.83 beat Steve Schmidt's 7.47/185. But in round two, his 7.55/184.95 lost to Glidden's 7.43/187. He debuted a new Don Ness-built car at Baton Rouge for the NHRA Cajun Nationals. He ran 7.56/185.33 to qualify #5. A first-round 7.54/185.18 beat alternate Geoffrey Bailey, but Glidden again beat him in round two. Warren's tire-shaking 7.79/180.39 lost to Bob's 7.52/185. The next NHRA event was the Springnationals at Columbus. There, Warren's 7.53/182.74 qualified #3, but in the first round, both he and Bruce Allen ran 7.66 (WJ at 182.62), but Allen got to the stripe first. Although it wasn't an NHRA National event, Johnson got a badly needed win at the Super Stock Nationals at Maple Grove in June. He set Low ET and Top Speed in qualifying with a 7.48/184.80. He made it look easy by beating Joe Sway's 7.67/175 in the opening round with a 7.55/182.92. A semifinal 7.53/183.61 took out Ken Koretsky's 7.63/183. In the final, he dropped Lepone's 7.72/178 with a 7.56/183.67. It was a much-needed boost, but it didn't last for long. At the NHRA Grandnationals, he "only" qualified #10 with a 7.62/185.83. He improved to 7.59/182.03 in the first round, when Eckman fouled away a 7.53 against him. In round two, his 7.62/184.50 lost to Leal's 7.53/184. Englishtown was the next stop on the NHRA tour for the Summernationals. Warren qualified #2 with a 7.49/185.60. He beat Coonce's 7.65/180 in the first round, with a 7.59/184.23, but lost to Larry Morgan in round two. NHRA's eighth race of the season was its Mile High Nationals, held at the end of July in Denver.WJ ran 7.98/174.41 to qualify #6. He got some "revenge" on Morgan in round one, where his 8.02/173.31 stopped Larry's 8.07/170, but WJ fouled away an 8.07 in round two against Allen, who also ran 8.07 to advance.

Notes: Jim started the year in a Volare at Pomona, but came out with this trick Charger (at Gainesville?) He made the show at the NHRA Southern Nationals, but in the first round, Joe Lepone's 8.05/170 beat his quicker 7.96/172.74. He did set Top Speed there at 177.16. The little Dodge had a great top-end charge all year. He scored a win in May at Baylands Raceway for the second NHRA Division 6 race. A final round 7.86 (Low ET) at 176.12 beat Bryant's Camaro for the victory. At the NHRA Cajun Nationals, a 7.97 qualified #6 in the tough eight-car field. He lost to Frank Iaconio in the first round. He surprised a lot of people at National Trail on June 13 for the NHRA Springnationals by qualifying #5 with a 7.91/172.08. He beat Pat Musi in the first round, before losing to Lee Shepherd in the second round. Jim was the first alternate at the eight-car Golden Gate Nationals at Baylands, running 7.855/177.16 for his best NHRA numbers of the year.

Notes: Ran 7.622/183.89 at NHRA Grandnational Molson 87. | Nick was the eighth alternate at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals with a best of 7.64/181.01. He went to Darlington for the IHRA Winternationals and still used his "small" NHRA combination to run 7.51/183 to qualify #15. He lost to eventual winner Rickie Smith in round one. A week later (March 22), he was at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals. A 7.52/183.97 qualified #14, but he lost to Lee Dean in the first round. Atlanta was his next stop for the NHRA Southern Nationals. Nick qualified #12 with a 7.56/183.33. He improved to 7.52/184.01 in the first round, but it wasn't enough to beat Butch Leal's 7.49/183. At Baton Rouge, for the NHRA Cajun Nationals, Nick qualified on the "bump" with a 7.68/181.01. Gary Brown fouled against him in round one, and Nick ran an easy 8.40/134.00 to advance. In the second round, he fouled against Reid Whisnant and shut off to 9.28. He really improved at Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals where his 7.54/181.92 qualified in the top half of the field (#5). Unfortunately, he fell off to 7.70/181.15 in a first-round loss to Stan Mizell's 7.67/180. He made a stop at Maple Grove for the Super Stock Magazine race. It was an eight-car show and Nick's 7.66 qualified #7. In the first round, he fouled away a 7.62/181.45 against Ken Koretsky. It was then off to Canada for the NHRA Grandnationals. There his 7.62/183.89 qualified #9. That set up a first-round meeting with low qualifier, Bob Glidden. It was a good race and Nikolis prevailed, running a 7.60/181.89 to beat Glidden's 7.61/184. In round two he ran his best time of the weekend, a 7.58 at 183.03, but it wasn't enough to beat Bruce Allen's 7.53/184. He continued to qualify well at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals where a 7.54/183.59 got him the #6 spot in the show. Qualifying was one thing, but getting past that first-round was another. Here he lost to Larry Morgan in round one. Denver was the next stop on the NHRA schedule and Nick qualified #9 for the show with an 8.01/172.47. This set up a rematch against low qualifier, Glidden in round one. This time Nick got out of shape and shut off while Glidden went on to win the race. Twenty Nine cars attempted to qualify at Brainerd for the NHRA Northstar Nationals. Nick's 7.61/181.63 qualified #8 ahead of such stars as Leal and Morgan. A first-round 7.59/181.81 advanced when Morgan fouled and in round two his 7.67/181.55 beat Jerry Eckman's late 7.58/182.55. An off pace 7.75/181.05 in the semifinals lost to eventual winner Allen's 7.57/183 in the Reher and Morrison Beretta. He qualified impressively at Indianapolis for the NHRA US Nationals where his 7.49/188.99 qualified #5. Considering that there were 52 cars attempting for the sixteen-car field he was doing pretty well. But a 7.58/183.97 lost to Korestsky's 7.54/183 in the first round. He was the #5 qualifier again at Maple Grove for the NHRA Keystone Nationals with a 7.50/183.56. He improved to 7.48/184.08 in the first round, to beat Joe Sway's 7.56/182. In round two he ran Glidden, and he shut off to a 7.87/151.74 after seeing it was hopeless to try to catch Bob's 7.38/186. He He qualified in the undesirable #9 spot at the NHRA Chief Nationals with a 7.43/184.84 forcing him to run low qualifier, Glidden in round one, again. Nikolis ran a great 7.44/184.69 in their first-round race, but Bob's 7.41/187 got the win.

Notes: Set speed record at Ennis. Rick Howard photo from 1990 NHRA Springnats, Columbus, Ohio. | After finishing fourth in the NHRA points standings in '89, Warren was determined to do better in '90. Things didn't go as well as he hoped as he only scored one NHRA victory in the year. He started his championship quest by qualifying #7 at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals with a 7.34/188.75. He improved to a 7.31/188.24 to beat Gordie Rivera's 7.37/187 in the first round, while in round two, his 7.34/188.36 took out Rickie Smith's 7.42/186. A 7.36/188.04 lost to Bruce Allen's 7.34/186 in the semifinals. At the NHRA Arizona Nationals, a 7.28/188.99 qualified #2. He fouled in the first round, against Scott Geoffrion. Johnson got his lone win of the year at the NHRA Supernationals at Houston on March 4. He qualified #2 with a 7.23/189.67 and beat Steve Schmidt and Rivera in the first two rounds with 7.32/188.36 and 7.27/189.03 times. In the semifinals, a 7.24/189.23 ended Kenny Delco's day and Warren moved into the final against Bruce Allen in the "Reher-Morrison" Beretta. Allen had problems and shut off to an 8.50/117.21 while WJ got the victory with a 7.25/189.11. At the Gatornationals, he qualified #2 for the third straight NHRA event with a 7.30/188.63. He beat Per-Kristian Skinne in the first round, but in round two he lost to Delco. He slipped to #3 in qualifying for the NHRA Southern Nationals at Atlanta with a 7.26 at a track record speed of 190.31. Warren worked his way to the final by beating Morris Johnson Jr, Delco, and Jerry Eckman in the semifinals with a 7.32/188. In the final he faced Larry Morgan and WJ fouled giving Morgan an easy win. The NHRA tour then went to Memphis for the Mid-South Nationals. There, WJ lasted until round two where both he and Bob Glidden ran 7.33, but Glidden got the win. Next stop was at Baton Rouge for the NHRA Cajun Nationals. Warren set a 7.28 track record in qualifying #1. His speed was tops for the meet at 189.71. In round one, he beat Buddy Ingersoll's Buick while a 7.39/188 in the second round beat Eckman's 7.43. He was a little slow off the line in the semifinals and his 7.41/188.95 lost to Mark Pawuk's 7.42/185. At the NHRA Springnationals, a 7.36 qualified him #2 in the show. He made it into the semifinals by beating Joe Folgore and Pawuk, but in the semis, he fouled against eventual winner Eckman. On June 23 he was in Canada for the NHRA Grandnationals. Warren ran 7.33/187.05 to qualify #2. He beat Frank Sanchez in round one, but in the second round, "Tricky" Rickie Smith pulled a holeshot, and his 7.39/184 managed to beat WJ's 7.37/185. The tenth NHRA race of the season was the Summernationals at Englishtown, N.J. Warren didn't do so well, lasting until the second round before losing to Delco. At Denver for the NHRA Mile High Nationals, WJ almost walked away with everything. He qualified #1 with a 7.76/177.65 (Top Speed and a track record). He beat Gary Herman, Pawuk, and Smith to reach the finals against Morgan. Both had been running 7.7s with WJ having the edge. In the final, Larry got a great leave and his 7.77/175 held off Warren's track record 7.74 at 176.92. Warren set another tack record of 7.28 at 190.35 in qualifying #1 at Sonoma for the NHRA California Nationals. He beat Ingersoll in the first round, but in round two went into heavy tire shake and slowed to a 7.50 that lost to Darrell Alderman's 7.30. Early in August he was at Seattle for the NHRA Northwest Nationals. He set Low ET and Top Speed in qualifying #1 with 7.30/188.75 times. He continued to look good in round one, with a 7.31/188.63 to beat Don Beverly, but he lasted until the semifinals where his Cutlass broke giving Pawuk a free trip into the finals. WJ must have been getting a little frustrated by the time the teams rolled into Brainerd for the NHRA Northstar Nationals. He was setting track records and running really good, but his finishes were not reflecting how good he was running. At Brainerd, a 7.36 qualified #3. He beat Luis Dayer in round one, and Glidden in the second round, but in the semifinals, he got left on by Allen and the little Beretta's 7.34 held on WJ's quicker 7.31.

Notes: Clark ran a career-best (to this point) 7.63 at 179.14 to qualify #13 at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals. Unfortunately, he lost to Bruce Allen in the first round. He was the ninth alternate for the NHRA Southern Nationals at Atlanta with a 7.73/179.49. In June, he qualified #7 for the eight-car field for the Super Stock Nationals with a 7.66/177.51. Clark ended up having a really good day. In the opening round, his 7.79/177.51 beat Frank Iaconio's very late 7.68/180. He then took out low qualifier Warren Johnson in the semi-final, where his 7.76/177.51 nipped WJ's 7.77/182. He then went up against Joe Lepone in the final, and Clark pushed the tree a little too hard and fouled away a 7.74/176.81 while Lepone got the victory with a 7.62/181. Best NHRA ET was a 7.589 that qualified #13 at Indy 1986. Joe was actually quicker than his opponent in round one but lost to a Butch Leal holeshot and a 7.601 to Joe's 7.597. His best NHRA national event speed was 181.37 at Englishtown (and repeated at Maple Grove). Listed speed from Drag Racing List December 86/January 87, Volume 1, Number 9, but that did not occur at an NHRA national event.

Notes: Ken ran 7.680/182.70 to qualify #7 at Pomona for the Winternationals. He beat Don Campanello in the first round with a 7.673/180.28, while in round two, his 7.703/176.40 beat Don Coonce. He lasted until the semifinal before losing to eventual winner Bob Glidden's 7.59/171 with a 7.723/176.40. At the Gatornationals, a 7.735/179.42 qualified #10, but a 7.697/178.57 lost to Warren Johnson's 7.55/183 in the first round. The next NHRA event was the Southern Nationals in Atlanta. Dondero qualified #6 with a 7.772/178.92. He beat Coonce in the first round with a 7.786/178.00, but he fouled and shut down to 10.067 in a loss to Butch Leal in round two. Ken dominated the show at Bakersfield for the March (May?) Meet. He set Low ET and Top Speed in qualifying #1 with a 7.74/183.29. A 7.84/174.41 in the first round beat Chuck Echmalian, and a semifinal 7.83/182.18 advanced when Harry Scribner fouled. He beat Jerry Eckman's 7.86/174 with a 7.79/182 for the victory in the final. Ken qualified #8 with a 7.714/178.42 at the Cajun Nationals. A 7.805/176.40 in the first round defeated Frank Sanchez, who got out of shape. He then beat Tony Christian in round two with a 7.883/161.00 after putting more than a one-tenth of a second holeshot on Tony. In the semifinal, his 7.786/177.65 lost to WJ's 7.62/181. Ken slipped a little further down the qualifying list at the Springnationals, only qualifying #15 with a 7.768/173.67. Bill Jenkins was tuning here. In round one, his 7.893/173.94 lost to Gordie Rivera's 7.843/176. Ken went to Maple Grove for the Super Stock Magazine Nationals the following week (June 23). It was an eight-car show, and he qualified #3 with a 7.78. Another 7.78 in the first round beat Nick Nikolis' 7.81. In the semifinals, he ran a consistent 7.79/177.51 but lost to WJ's 7.65/180. Ken went to Canada for the Grandnationals, where he ran a 7.718/180.57 to qualify #15. In the first round, he lost to Dempsey Hardy's 7.75/176 with a 7.77/171.36. At the Summernationals, a 7.723/179.14 qualified #12. He broke against Gordie Rivera in the first round. That was followed by a trip to Denver for the Mile High Nationals, where he qualified #11 with an 8.117/171.42. In the first round, his 8.165/171.75 lost to Coonce's 8.061/169.81. The next stop on the NHRA calendar was at Brainerd for the Northstar Nationals. Dondero qualified #12 with a 7.800/180.36. In round one, he improved to 7.721/179.28 to beat Gene Fasching. In round two, Christian's 7.732/179.64 beat his 7.793/174.75. Everybody was at Indy for the NHRA U.S. Nationals, and Ken barely made the show. His 7.761/181.52 qualified on the "bump." He went home early when he fouled away a 7.795/176.95 in the first round against Frank Iaconio. Ken swapped into Ronnie Manchester's car for a few late-season races. He was driving this car at Maple Grove for the NHRA Keystone Nationals. Twenty-nine cars were attempting to qualify, and his 7.626/181.52 qualified #10. Despite running well, a 7.671/179.49 in the first round lost to WJ's 7.57/183. According to our records, Ken was back in the Dondero car at the Phoenix Fallnationals. He qualified #3 at 7.670/179.28. Ken best Gordie Rivera in round one, 7.766/177.86 to 8.355/130.43. In round two, he beat Frank Sanchez, 7.756/178.21 to 7.866/176.12. In the semis, Bob Glidden got the better of Ken, 7.671/180.36 to 7.804/177.86. Ken was driving a Trans Am at the World Finals at Pomona. We must validate whether this was the Ronnie Manchester car or a new Panella machine. He qualified #3 at 7.635/181.30. He broke in round one, but Dave Hutchens fouled, so Ken advanced. In round two, he beat Pete Smith, 7.721/179.71 to 7.867/178.07. Ken lost a close one to Bruce Allen in the semis, 7.652/181.23 to 7.678/180.21. We are listing the Finals times with the Ronnie Manchester car for now, but we need confirmation. The Camaro's validated best NHRA times were at Pomona at 7.673/182.70, and the Bakersfield 183.29 was its fastest speed. At this time, we are listing the 7.670 from Phoenix with this car, although there is a possibility there was a new Dondero Trans Am that should get those times, plus those from the World Finals. Who can answer this mystery?

Notes: Gene qualified #13 at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals with a 7.73/177.51. He lost to Gordie Rivera in the first round. He was the eighth alternate at the NHRA Gatornationals with a 7.82/175.78 best. Things went better at Atlanta, where his 7.81/176.40 qualified #9. Unfortunately, qualifying #9 set up a first-round meeting with the low qualifier, Warren Johnson. Fasching's 7.93/172.02 finished second best in that race to WJ's 7.73/181.

Notes: Ran 7.659/179.64 at 1986 NHRA Winters with the old paint job. Listed times from The Drag Racing List, Volume 1, Number 9, December 86/January 87. Made it to round three at the Mile Highs, losing to Glidden. The best NHRA times were a 7.560 at Maple Grove, which beat Joe Lepone on a holeshot in round one, and 183.52 in a third alternate finish at Indy. Stan was at Baton Rouge in June for the NHRA Cajun Nationals. (With new paint) Unfortunately, his 7.76/178.07 best was only good enough for the third alternate. He was the first alternate at Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals with a 7.72/179.06. Things went a little better at the NHRA Grandnationals, where he qualified #13 with a 7.67/178.64, but in the opening round of eliminations, eventual winner Butch Leal ran 7.65/183 to beat his 7.68/179.21. His next stop was at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals, where his 7.62/179.71 failed to qualify. Things went a whole lot better at Denver for the NHRA Mile-High Nationals; not only did he qualify, but he also lasted until the semifinals. A 8.08/170.45 got him the #15 spot in the field. An opening round 8.32/166.14 advanced when his opponent, Dempsey Hardy, broke a fuel pump. In round two, Leal broke a transmission, and Mizell's 8.17/167 moved on. His luck ran out in the semifinal when he came up against the race's eventual winner Bob Glidden. Stan ran his best time of eliminations, an 8.12/168.66, but it finished far behind Glidden's 7.92/174.

Notes: Bruce was still driving his own car up until Reher-Morrison hired him to start driving their Camaro starting at the Cajun Nationals. He was running pretty good with his own stuff, qualifying #6 at the Gatornationals with a 7.70/177.23. He also made the show at the Southern Nationals with a 7.69/180.07 qualifying #3.
