Notes: This was a great season for Glidden. He started the year by running 7.425/186.76 to qualify first at Pomona (he qualified #1 at all the NHRA races in '87). He beat Mark Pawuk in the first round, with a 7.65/180.43 before losing to Butch Leal's 7.52/183 in the second round with a quicker but later 7.45/186.60. At the NHRA Gatornationals, a 7.41/186.21 got him the #1 spot in the field. He beat a fouling Steve Schmidt in the first round with a 7.40/187.96, and in round two, his 7.44/187 beat Jerry Eckman. Bob set Low ET in the semifinals with a 7.39/187.96 while beating Darrell Alderman, but after the run, he found a cracked cylinder head. The team pulled engines and installed a new one for the final against Leal. Unfortunately, Bob fouled in the final, handing Butch the victory. The next event was the NHRA Winston All-Star race at the Texas Motorplex. The non-points race featured only eight-car Pro fields. Of course, Glidden qualified #1 with a track record 7.318 at 189.55. Bob beat Leal's 7.40/186 with a 7.33/189.67 (Top Speed) in the first round, but in round two, both he and Joe Lepone Jr. ran 7.46 (Glidden at 187.85), with Lepone getting the win light. The next stop was at Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals. A 7.38/187.96 got him his customary #1 spot in qualifying. He set Low ET and Top Speed with track records of 7.37/188.36 while beating Don Coonce in round one, and a 7.43/187 beat Warren Johnson in round two. Another 7.43/187.26 beat Bruce Allen's 7.53/185 in the semifinals. This put Bob in the final against Leal again. Glidden was not to be denied his 53 career NHRA victory, and his final round 7.42/187.46 assured him the win over Leal's 7.49/185. The fourth NHRA race of the season was the Cajun Nationals at Baton Rouge in May. The #1 qualifying spot was taken by a 7.51/189.99 (Top Speed). He set Low ET and a track record 7.45 at 186.64 in the first round while taking out Tony Christian. His 7.52/185.75 beat a tire-shaking WJ in the second round, but a semifinal 7.58/189.91 lost to Leal's 7.52/184. It was then off to Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals. Of course, he qualified #1, setting both ends of the track record with 7.49/186.33 times to get the spot. An opening round 7.50/184.91 defeated Don Campanello's 7.69/182. In round two, his 7.52/185.10 took out Stan Mizell's 7.65/181, and another 7.50/185.41 beat Allen's 7.65/182. He faced #2 qualifier Leal in the final, and Glidden racked up his 54th victory with a 7.50/185.29, beating Leal's 7.63/180. It was interesting to note that while he was obviously doing great in the NHRA competition, he was also running every other weekend in IHRA and regularly winning there, too. The NHRA Grandnationals didn't go so well. He qualified #1 at 7.51/186.41 (Low ET and Top Speed). In the first round of competition, his 7.61/184.76 lost to Nick Nikolis' 7.60/181. At the NHRA Sumernationals, Bob's track record 7.42 at 186.33 earned him the pole. That made it a full year since anyone but Glidden qualified #1 in NHRA Pro Stock. The last time anyone else qualified #1 was at the NHRA Grandnationals in '86. In the opening round, he ran 7.50/184.95 to take out Leal's 7.57/182, but in round two, a quick-leaving 7.67/181 by Jerry Haas beat his 7.60/184.76. Reher and Morrison debuted a new Beretta for driver Bruce Allen at the NHRA Mile High Nationals. It was an effort to stop Glidden's domination. Bob still got his 16th straight #1 qualifying spot with a 7.88/175.47 (Top Speed), but Allen's new car qualified #2. These two would meet in the final. Bob started his drive by running 7.93/174.01 over Nikolis. A round two 7.93/173.41 stopped Kenny Delco, and in the semifinal, his 7.92/173.34 beat Leal, who fouled. The Chevy vs. Ford final was great, and Bob pulled off career victory number 55 with a 7.87 (Low ET) at 171.55 in beating Allen's 7.99/173. Brainerd was the next event on the NHRA schedule for the NHRA Northstar Nationals. Bob got his customary #1 spot with a 7.49/184.99 in qualifying. Once again, Allen was #2 but half a tenth back at 7.55. These two would once again battle it out. Bob beat Leal in the opening round. Then he ran 7.47/185.45 in round two over Darrell Alderman. The car went into heavy tire shake in the semifinal, but Bob drove out of it, and his 7.58/184.31 narrowly beat Warren Johnson's similar 7.58/182. So, facing Allen in the final, Bruce got lane choice due to his 7.57 semifinal win. The two had a great race that saw Allen's 7.53/183 win over Bob's 7.58/181.34. At Indy, there was a race within the race as NHRA ran the Mr. Gasket Pro Stock Challenge. This race only allowed the top eight qualifiers over the last 12 months to complete. Glidden was the #1 seed coming into this event. His 7.43/190.59 beat WJ's 7.54/187 in round one. He almost duplicated those times in the semifinal, with his 7.43/190.39 taking out Leal's 7.55/184. Once again, he faced the Beretta of Allen in the final. Bob won the event with a final 7.54/188.16 over Bruce's 7.64/184. Photo from Indy 1987. He Ran 7.318 best time at the Ennis All-Stars race, but records were not set at that race. Bob then set the national speed record at Indy 191.32, then the ET record twice: Chief Nats (7.354, 7.352). Bob ran 7.519/186.41 at NHRA Baton Rouge Cajun Nats 1987.

Notes: The Reher-Morrison team used the Camaro until they debuted the Ness-built Beretta at the NHRA Mile High Nationals. The team started the year at Pomona with the Camaro for the NHRA Winternationals, where Bruce Allen qualified the car #3 with a 7.47/184.57. Unfortunately, Allen fouled away a 7.56 in the first round and lost to Don Coonce's 7.59. At the NHRA Gatornationals, the team qualified #4 with a 7.47/186.45. Bruce improved to a 7.45/186.29 in the first round to beat Reid Whisnant. A 7.49/186 in round two took out Coonce, but in the semifinals, he slowed to 7.52/185, which was not enough to get around Butch Leal's 7.44/186. The next stop was at the Texas Motorplex for the NHRA Winston All-Stars race. The Pro categories were eight-car fields, so qualifying was tough. Allen qualified #3 with a 7.38/186.68, but in the first round, he lost to a holeshot by Joe Lepone. His 7.39/186.14 lost to Joe's 7.44/184. Bruce made it to the semifinals at the Gators but lost to Butch Leal there. He made it to the semis at NHRA Atlanta as well. Bruce ran his best speed of the year with a booming 7.52/188.52 and made it to the finals at the Cajun Nats, but he lost to Butch Leal. Rick Howard took this photo at the Columbus race, where Bruce qualified 11th at 7.60/182.62 mph. He lost to eventual winner Bob Glidden in the semifinals. Bruce was runner-up to Leal at the Sanair Grandnationals as well. He made it to the finals at the Summernationals but finished runner-up to Jerry Eckman. The team debuted their new Beretta at the Mile High Nationals.

Notes: Darrell qualified #12 at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals with a 7.53/182.88. In the first round, his 7.52/179.03 beat Lee Dean's 7.55/183. He lost to Larry Morgan in round two. At the NHRA Gatornationals, a 7.49/186.06 qualified #7. In round one, his 7.53/185.14 beat Kenny Delco and in round two, his 7.59/180 stopped Joe Lepone Jr. who ran a quicker 7.58/180. Darrell got out of shape in the semifinals and shut off, losing to Bob Glidden. Alderman did not race at the NHRA Winston All-Stars race, but he attempted to qualify at Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals. He was the first alternate with a best of 7.58/182.59. The next NHRA race was the Cajun Nationals at Baton Rouge. Darrell qualified #13 with a 7.64/182.51. Unfortunately, the race was postponed one week due to rain and Darrell was unable to return for the rain date as he had plans to race his mountain motored car at Bristol for the IHRA Springnationals. He qualified on the "bump" at Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals with a 7.64/177.72. In the opening round, he fouled away a 7.68 against Gary Brown who advanced with a 7.66. Alderman did not make the trip to Canada for the NHRA Grandnationals, but he was at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals. A 7.57/182.68 qualified #12. But in the first round, his 7.63/181.67 lost to Bruce Allen's 7.56/183. He skipped over the NHRA Mile High Nationals at Denver, but returned to the tour at Brainerd for the NHRA Northstar Nationals. He qualified in the top half (#5) of the field with a 7.60/182.11. Darrell improved to 7.58/182.33 in the first round, to beat Reid Whisnant's 7.85/146, but he came up against Glidden in round two and Bob's T-Bird was flying, running 7.4s at will. Sure enough, Bob pounded out a 7.47/185 to send Alderman back to the trailer with a 7.61/181.92. The NHRA US Nationals at Indy was crazy, with 52 cars attempting to qualify for the sixteen-car field. Darrell ran 7.48/189.19 to qualify #2 behind Glidden's 7.42. In round one, a 7.56 narrowly beat Tony Christian's 7.57. A quick-leaving 7.59/188.00 in round two beat Kenny Delco's quicker 7.57/182 and he showed his driving skill in the semifinal, where he left on Warren Johnson and hung on to win with his 7.59/188.16 beating WJ's 7.53/189. He faced that pesky T-Bird in the final, and despite running his best time of eliminations, a 7.52/189.15, he lost to Glidden's 7.43/188. Photo from Indy 87, where the team was runner-up.

Notes: Listed times from The Drag Racing List, Winter 87/88, Volume 2, Number 9. Won Englishtown Summernationals. | Eckman didn't start his season as he would have liked. A best of 7.58/182.81 was good for the fourth alternate at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. Things went much better at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals, where he qualified #5 with a 7.48/185.52. He beat Tony Christian's 7.53/185 in the first round, with a 7.49/185.33. But in round two, he lost to Bob Glidden. He was at the Texas Motorplex for the NHRA Winston All-Star race. The PRO fields were only eight-car shows, and Eckman's 7.40/185.37 qualified #4. A first-round 7.61/182.81 beat Gordie Rivera's quicker 7.59/180, but in the semifinals, his 7.42/184.53 lost to the race's eventual winner Warren Johnson's 7.32/187. On April 11, he was at Firebird Raceway for the Coors-sponsored race. It was another eight-car show, and Jerry qualified #1 with a 7.52 (Low ET). He ran 7.61/177.86 and 7.55/182.18, only a fouling Chuck Echmalian to reach the finals. He faced Ken Thurm, and Eckman won easily with a 7.58/182.55 (Top Speed) over Ken's 7.89/175. The next NHRA event was the Southern Nationals at Atlanta on April 26. Eckman qualified #2 behind Glidden's 7.38 with a 7.46/182.81. Unfortunately, a first-round 7.47/183.15 lost to Christian's 7.49/185. Early in the season, Eckman was using a Willie Rells built car. Not sure when or if he switched to a Ness-built car. Baton Rouge had 34 cars attempt to qualify for the NHRA Cajun Nationals, and Jerry's 7.57/183.11 got him the #7 spot. In the first round, he faced Larry Morgan, and he fouled away a 7.51 while Larry advanced into round two with a 7.66. The next stop on the NHRA tour was at Columbus for the Springnationals. Once again, Jerry qualified well, with his 7.53/182.55 getting the #4 spot in the field. He beat Reid Whisnant in the first round, with a 7.61/182.00, and in round two, a 7.67/181.56 took out Gary Brown. In the semifinals, a 7.65/181.48 lost to Butch Leal's 7.59/183. He followed the NHRA tour to Canada for the Grandnationals, where his 7.55/183.78 qualified #2. But in the first round, he fouled away a 7.53 against Johnson, who advanced with a 7.59. He got his first NHRA National event victory at the next race, the Summernationals at Englishtown. He qualified #3 with a 7.53/182.92 and then beat Brown in round one, with a 7.56/182.24. A second-round 7.57/182.33 beat Whisnant's 7.63/179, and a semifinal 7.58/181.70 took out Jerry Haas' 7.68/181. He faced Bruce Allen in the Reher and Morrison car, and a 7.50/183.07 picked up the win over Allen's 7.55/183. He then made the trip to Denver for the NHRA Mile High Nationals. His 7.96/172.54 qualified #5, but he lost a close race in the opening round where both he and Kenny Delco ran 8.07 (Eckman at 171.23), but Delco got the win light. At the NHRA Northstar Nationals, a 7.59/180.65 qualified #4. Another 7.59 at 181.81 in the first round, beat Lee Dean's 7.59/182, but a sleepy 7.58/182.55 in round two lost to Nick Nikolis' 7.67/181.

Notes: Warren Johnson started the '87 season by winning the NHRA Winternationals at Pomona. He qualified #2 with a 7.43/188.20 (Top Speed and a new track record), behind Bob Glidden's 7.42/186. In the first round, he ran another 7.43 at 187.50 to beat Kenny Delco. In round two, he stopped Gordie Rivera's 7.50/183 with a 7.46/186.60. He then set Low ET in the semifinals with a 7.403 (track record) at 186.91 to beat Larry Morgan. He faced Butch Leal in the final, and Leal hadn't been out of the 7.5s all day. But Leal was always sharp on the lights, so it would still be a good race. But Butch didn't get his usual starting line advantage, and Warren's 7.43/187.22 got the win over Leal's 7.52/184. After such a great start to the season, it was surprising that Warren failed to qualify at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals. He was plagued by tire shake and then dropped a valve. His best of 7.56/187.03 was good for the third alternate. He made up for it by winning April's NHRA Winston Invitational race at the Texas Motorplex. It was an eight-car show, and his 7.33/187.30 qualified #2 behind Glidden's 7.31/189. Johnson then ran 7.37/187.42 over Don Coonce's 7.47/185 and 7.32/187.98 to beat Jerry Eckman's 7.42/184. He faced Joe Lepone in the final, and Warren's 7.38/187.57 earned the title over Lepone's 7.51/183. He then went into a long dry spell. At the NHRA Southern Nationals at Atlanta, he qualified #5 with a 7.49/186.10, and an opening-round 7.44/185.83 beat Steve Schmidt's 7.47/185. But in round two, his 7.55/184.95 lost to Glidden's 7.43/187. He debuted a new Don Ness-built car at Baton Rouge for the NHRA Cajun Nationals. He ran 7.56/185.33 to qualify #5. A first-round 7.54/185.18 beat alternate Geoffrey Bailey, but Glidden again beat him in round two. Warren's tire-shaking 7.79/180.39 lost to Bob's 7.52/185. The next NHRA event was the Springnationals at Columbus. There, Warren's 7.53/182.74 qualified #3, but in the first round, both he and Bruce Allen ran 7.66 (WJ at 182.62), but Allen got to the stripe first. Although it wasn't an NHRA National event, Johnson got a badly needed win at the Super Stock Nationals at Maple Grove in June. He set Low ET and Top Speed in qualifying with a 7.48/184.80. He made it look easy by beating Joe Sway's 7.67/175 in the opening round with a 7.55/182.92. A semifinal 7.53/183.61 took out Ken Koretsky's 7.63/183. In the final, he dropped Lepone's 7.72/178 with a 7.56/183.67. It was a much-needed boost, but it didn't last for long. At the NHRA Grandnationals, he "only" qualified #10 with a 7.62/185.83. He improved to 7.59/182.03 in the first round, when Eckman fouled away a 7.53 against him. In round two, his 7.62/184.50 lost to Leal's 7.53/184. Englishtown was the next stop on the NHRA tour for the Summernationals. Warren qualified #2 with a 7.49/185.60. He beat Coonce's 7.65/180 in the first round, with a 7.59/184.23, but lost to Larry Morgan in round two. NHRA's eighth race of the season was its Mile High Nationals, held at the end of July in Denver.WJ ran 7.98/174.41 to qualify #6. He got some "revenge" on Morgan in round one, where his 8.02/173.31 stopped Larry's 8.07/170, but WJ fouled away an 8.07 in round two against Allen, who also ran 8.07 to advance.

Notes: Joe drove the Beretta and the Giddings & Wells Camaro in 1987. Definitely drove the Camaro at Ennis Spring, but assuming he ran the Beretta everywhere else. Once this is verified, check DragStats to assign best times to the right car. 236 IHRA. The Drag Racing List, Winter 87/88, Volume 2, Number 9 had 188.28, but the best times for the year on the NHRA trail were 7.403/187.42. Ran 7.682/182.22 at NHRA Grandnational Molson 1987.

Notes: Dean started the season at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. Forty-seven cars were attempting to make the sixteen-car field. Lee ran 7.47/185.64 to qualify #4, and he was the quickest Pontiac in the show. In the opening round, he fell off to a 7.55/183.82, which lost to Darrell Alderman's 7.52/179. The NHRA Gatornationals continued to attract a lot of cars as 45 attempted to qualify. His 7.49/188.48 (Top Speed) qualified #6. He beat Nick Nikolis in round one, with a 7.53/185.68. In the second round, he got out of shape and shut off against eventual winner Butch Leal. At Atlanta, Lee's 7.51/184.80 qualified #8. In the opening round, his 7.51/185.43 defeated Larry Morgan's 7.60/183. Leal got him again in round two, where his 7.59/181.70 fell to the Butch's 7.53/183. His next stop was at Baton Rouge for the NHRA Cajun Nationals. Even with 34 cars competing, he continued to qualify in the top half of the field. His 7.56/184.35 got him the #6 spot in the show. Both he and his opponent, Kenny Delco, ran 7.69 in the first round, (Lee at 181.92), but Delco got the "win" light. Lee ran 7.599/183.76 at NHRA Grandnational Molson 87, the #3 qualifier.

Notes: The Reher and Morrison team debuted their Beretta at Denver near the end of July for the NHRA Mile High Nationals. Driver Bruce Allen qualified #2 with a 7.96/173.61 behind Bob Glidden's 7.88/175. These two would eventually meet in the final. Bruce's opening round 8.00/172.97 beat Reid Whisnant's 8.08/169. In round two, he advanced with an 8.07/155.11 when Warren Johnson fouled against him. But all was not easy for the team as they had dropped a valve on the pass and changed engines for the semifinal. In that race, his 8.03/172.71 took out Joe Lepone's quicker 8.02/172. The problem was that Glidden was running low 7.9s throughout eliminations. Allen picked it up to a 7.99/173.37 in the final between the two, but so did Bob as he set Low ET to win with a 7.87/171. The next race on the NHRA schedule was the Northstar Nationals. Allen again followed Glidden in qualifying with a 7.55/183.11, second behind Bob's 7.49/184. And once again, these two would advance into the final together. Allen started his run with a 7.53/183.11 over Don Coonce's 7.61/181. A round two 7.53/183.63 beat Tony Christian's 7.62/183, and in the semifinals, his 7.57/183.41 beat Nick Nikolis' 7.75/181. Bob ran 7.4s in the first two rounds before tire shake slowed him to 7.58 in the semifinal. Most expected him to drop right back into the 7.4s in the final, but he didn't, and his 7.58/181 finished runner-up to Allen's 7.53/183.67. It was Allen's fourth NHRA National event victory and his first since the '85 Keystone Nationals. The team then made the trip to Indy for the NHRA US Nationals. There was a race within a race as the lowest eight qualifiers over the year competed in the Mr. Gasket Pro Stock Challenge race. Bruce had amassed enough points to qualify second behind you-know-who in the T-Bird. Allen reached the final by running 7.52/184.72 over Lee Dean's 7.55/182 and 7.56/185.18 over an off-pace Gary Brown at 8.89. Once again, he faced Glidden in another final, and Bruce ran his slowest of the day, a 7.64/184.99, to finish second to Bob's 7.54/188. The next day, for the actual race, Allen found himself way back in the qualifying order (#11) with his 7.52/184.72. In the opening round, he fouled away a 7.54 against Jerry Eckman, who advanced with a 7.52. He was back in the #2 spot after qualifying ended at the NHRA Keystone Nationals with a 7.47/185.10. This was still a ways back from Glidden's pole-winning 7.40. But Bruce improved to 7.43/185.68 in the first round to beat Butch Leal's 7.45/184. He had a close race against Eckman in round two where both ran 7.48 (Allen at 186.10), but Bruce got the win light. He faced Christian in the semifinals, but a broken transmission ended the Beretta's run there. At the NHRA Chief Nationals, a 7.41/186.56 qualified #5. Jerry Haas fouled against him in round one, and Allen's 7.42/186.60 advanced. In round two, he faced Glidden, and Allen's 7.42/186.60 lost to the Ford driver's 7.37/188. Things went pretty much the same at the NHRA Fallnationals. He qualified #8 with a 7.57/184.04 and a slightly better 7.55/183.33 in the opening round beat Jeff Velde, but he lost in round two again. This time to Warren Johnson. Allen's 7.63/182.70 wasn't enough to get around WJ's 7.59/183. At the NHRA season-ending World Finals at Pomona. Allen's 7.46/185.75 qualified #7. He beat Jerry Haas in the first round, with a 7.51/185.10, but in round two, his 7.54/185.14 lost to Brown's 7.50/185.

Notes: Photo from Ennis 87. Ran 7.733/180.36 at NHRA Grandnational Molson 87, which was the fifth alternate for the show. He was the nineteenth alternate at Englishtown for the Summernationals with a 7.69/180.54 best. He then went to Denver for the Mile High Nationals where his 8.10/170.13 was good for the fourth alternate. The next stop on the NHRA tour was at Brainerd for the Northstar Nationals. There he was the eighth alternate with a 7.74/178.14. Sway was making some big end power at Indy for the US Nationals, but it was a tough field to crack into and his 7.59/186.52 best (twelfth alternate) didn't. Joe was only one spot away from making the field at Maple Grove for the Keystone Nationals. His 7.57/181.92 best was the first alternate. At Texas for the Chief Nationals, Sway ran 7.43/183.93 to qualify in the top half of the field (#8). In the opening round his 7.46/183.48 beat Tony Christian's 7.49/185, but a 7.52/183.44 in the second round lost to Jerry Eckman's 7.44/185. After running so well at Texas, it was surprising to see his name among the non-qualifiers at the Fallnationals. His 7.62/182.11 was the fourth alternate there. He ended his NHRA season back at Pomona for the World Finals. It didn't end as he would have liked as he was the fourth alternate again with a 7.51/183.59 best.

Notes: Ran 7.622/183.89 at NHRA Grandnational Molson 87. | Nick was the eighth alternate at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals with a best of 7.64/181.01. He went to Darlington for the IHRA Winternationals and still used his "small" NHRA combination to run 7.51/183 to qualify #15. He lost to eventual winner Rickie Smith in round one. A week later (March 22), he was at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals. A 7.52/183.97 qualified #14, but he lost to Lee Dean in the first round. Atlanta was his next stop for the NHRA Southern Nationals. Nick qualified #12 with a 7.56/183.33. He improved to 7.52/184.01 in the first round, but it wasn't enough to beat Butch Leal's 7.49/183. At Baton Rouge, for the NHRA Cajun Nationals, Nick qualified on the "bump" with a 7.68/181.01. Gary Brown fouled against him in round one, and Nick ran an easy 8.40/134.00 to advance. In the second round, he fouled against Reid Whisnant and shut off to 9.28. He really improved at Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals where his 7.54/181.92 qualified in the top half of the field (#5). Unfortunately, he fell off to 7.70/181.15 in a first-round loss to Stan Mizell's 7.67/180. He made a stop at Maple Grove for the Super Stock Magazine race. It was an eight-car show and Nick's 7.66 qualified #7. In the first round, he fouled away a 7.62/181.45 against Ken Koretsky. It was then off to Canada for the NHRA Grandnationals. There his 7.62/183.89 qualified #9. That set up a first-round meeting with low qualifier, Bob Glidden. It was a good race and Nikolis prevailed, running a 7.60/181.89 to beat Glidden's 7.61/184. In round two he ran his best time of the weekend, a 7.58 at 183.03, but it wasn't enough to beat Bruce Allen's 7.53/184. He continued to qualify well at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals where a 7.54/183.59 got him the #6 spot in the show. Qualifying was one thing, but getting past that first-round was another. Here he lost to Larry Morgan in round one. Denver was the next stop on the NHRA schedule and Nick qualified #9 for the show with an 8.01/172.47. This set up a rematch against low qualifier, Glidden in round one. This time Nick got out of shape and shut off while Glidden went on to win the race. Twenty Nine cars attempted to qualify at Brainerd for the NHRA Northstar Nationals. Nick's 7.61/181.63 qualified #8 ahead of such stars as Leal and Morgan. A first-round 7.59/181.81 advanced when Morgan fouled and in round two his 7.67/181.55 beat Jerry Eckman's late 7.58/182.55. An off pace 7.75/181.05 in the semifinals lost to eventual winner Allen's 7.57/183 in the Reher and Morrison Beretta. He qualified impressively at Indianapolis for the NHRA US Nationals where his 7.49/188.99 qualified #5. Considering that there were 52 cars attempting for the sixteen-car field he was doing pretty well. But a 7.58/183.97 lost to Korestsky's 7.54/183 in the first round. He was the #5 qualifier again at Maple Grove for the NHRA Keystone Nationals with a 7.50/183.56. He improved to 7.48/184.08 in the first round, to beat Joe Sway's 7.56/182. In round two he ran Glidden, and he shut off to a 7.87/151.74 after seeing it was hopeless to try to catch Bob's 7.38/186. He He qualified in the undesirable #9 spot at the NHRA Chief Nationals with a 7.43/184.84 forcing him to run low qualifier, Glidden in round one, again. Nikolis ran a great 7.44/184.69 in their first-round race, but Bob's 7.41/187 got the win.

Notes: Stan was the third alternate at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals with a 7.57/182.37. That wasn't too bad, considering that 47 cars were attempting to qualify. At Gainesville, for the NHRA Gatornationals, he was the eighth alternate at 7.58/179.92. Near the end of May, he was at Baton Rouge for the NHRA Cajun Nationals. He ended up as the ninth alternate with a 7.75/179.42. Things went much better at Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals, where his 7.61/177.90 qualified #13. In the opening round of eliminations, he beat Nick Nikolis' 7.70/181 with a 7.67/180.90. In round two, his 7.65/181.59 fell to eventual winner Bob Glidden's 7.52/185. Ran 7.742/182.81 at NHRA Grandnational Molson 87, which was good for the sixth alternate. At Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals, he was the eighth alternate with a 7.62/181.95 best. He did not go to Denver for the Mile High Nationals, but he did go to Brainerd for the Northstar Nationals, where his 7.70/176.95 was the fourth alternate. He then made the trip to Indy for the US Nationals. It was a tough show as 52 cars attempted to qualify for the sixteen-car field. He did better than 23 of them, but his 7.60/186.18 was still only good enough for the thirteenth alternate. His next stop was at Maple Grove for the Keystone Nationals. A best of 7.59/181.48 left him as the ninth alternate for the show. He ran well at Texas for the Chief Nationals. Stan's 7.44/184.80 qualified #12, but he lost to Jerry Eckman in the opening round. He was the second alternate at the Fallnationals with a 7.61/183.37 best, and at the World Finals at Pomona, his 7.50/183.78 was the second alternate for the show.

Notes: Ran 7.657/183.09 at NHRA Grandnational Molson 87. At Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, 47 cars attempted to qualify for the sixteen-car field. Don did well, qualifying #11 with a 7.53/183.48. He didn't reach the finals, but just qualifying was tough. It didn't get any easier at Gainesville where 45 cars showed for the NHRA Gatornationals. Coonce qualified #8 with a 7.50/183.82. He beat Scott Geoffrion in round one, but in round two he got out of shape in his race with Bruce Allen, and he slowed to a 7.88/175 loss. The Texas Motorplex hosted the NHRA Winston All-Star race. It was only eight-car fields in the pro classes and once again Don was able to qualify. His 7.45/185.45 qualified #6. He lost to eventual winner Warren Johnson in the first round. The next stop on the NHRA tour was at Atlanta for the Southern Nationals. A 7.52/184.01 qualified in the dreaded #9 spot. That meant he had to run low qualifier Bob Glidden in the first round. Glidden beat him in their race. At the NHRA Cajun Nationals, a 7.61/184.01 qualified #10. Unfortunately, he lost to Allen in the first round.

Notes: Gary Brown was tough in '87. He qualified #15 at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals with a 7.56/174.35. An off-pace 7.64/172.41 lost to Tony Christian's 7.51/184 in the first round. At the NHRA Gatornationals, he really shone, as 45 cars were attempting to qualify. He ran 7.461/186.48 to qualify #3 behind Bob Glidden and Butch Leal. Unfortunately, he fouled away a 7.50 in the first round, against Joe Lepone, who ran 7.56 for the win. At the NHRA Southern Nationals, he continued to run well, qualifying #6 with a 7.50/185.87. He had a close first-round race with Pete Smith that saw both drivers run 7.53 (Brown at 186.83). Gary got the win. In round two, he ran another 7.53, but it was accompanied by a red light, and Christian's 7.57 advanced. At Baton Rouge, for the NHRA Cajun Nationals, a 7.58/184.42 qualified #8. But he fouled away a 7.60 in the opening round of eliminations against Nick Nikolis. The next stop was at Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals. Brown showed he could still qualify in the top half of the field by running 7.57/183.82 to get the #8 spot. Darrell Alderman fouled against him in round one, and he advanced with a 7.66/180.90. But an off-pace 7.79/181.48 in round two lost to Jerry Eckman's 7.67/181. He was #8 again at the NHRA Grandnationals with a 7.61/184.65. A fouling 7.68 in the first round, lost to Joe Lepone's 7.70. At Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals, he slipped a bit, qualifying #11 with a 7.56/184.31. An off-pace 7.72/182.40 lost to Eckman's 7.56/182 in the opening round. After running so well, it was surprising to see his name among the non-qualifiers at Denver for the NHRA Mile High Nationals. The thin air always makes it tough for the Pro Stock cars to make power. Gary ended up as the second alternate with an 8.10/172.24. Gary set Top Speed of the meet at Ennis at 188.16 but was the first alternate at 7.466!

Notes: Tony was at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. He qualified #7 with a 7.52/185.03 and a first-round 7.51/184.31 beat Gary Brown. Unfortunately, he fouled away a 7.59 in round two that lost to Don Coonce's 7.67. He also made the field at the NHRA Gatornationals where his 7.52/185.26 qualified #13. In the first round his 7.53/185.41 lost to Jerry Eckman's 7.49/185. He did not compete at the NHRA Winston All-Star race, but he was at Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals. There his 7.54/184.69 qualified #10. He improved to 7.49/185.10 in the first round, to beat Eckman's quicker 7.47/183. In round two his 7.57/184 advanced when Brown fouled. His run came to an end in the semifinals where Butch Leal's 7.51/185 stopped his 7.54/185.29. Baton Rouge was the next stop for the NHRA tour for the Cajun Nationals at State Capitol Dragway. Christian qualified in the dreaded #9 spot with a 7.60/184.46. This set up a first-round meeting with low qualifier, Bob Glidden. Tony gambled on the tree and lost. He shut off to 7.78 after seeing the red while Bob advanced with a 7.45. It was then off to Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals. A best of 7.65/183.48 failed to make the show and was the first alternate. He was in Canada at the end of June for the NHRA Grandnationals. Tony qualified #11 with a 7.636/183.78. He lasted until round two where his 7.64/183.69 lost to Kenny Delco's 7.57/183. Back in the US for the NHRA Summernationals at Englishtown, a 7.54/184.35 qualified #8. He slowed to 7.61/183.07 in the first round, but it was still enough to beat Lee Dean's 7.66/182. He had a close race against Bruce Allen in the "Reher and Morrison" Camaro in round two. It didn't end in his favor as his 7.62/183.07 lost to Allen's 7.61/182. He failed to qualify at Denver for the NHRA Mile High Nationals where he was the third alternate with an 8.10/171.88.

Notes: Willie attempted to qualify at the NHRA Chief Nationals in October, but his 7.47/185.03 best was good for the fourth alternate. He did not run at either of the last two remaining NHRA races in '87.

Notes: Gordie started the '87 season at Phoenix's Super Bowl of Drag Racing event. It was not a good weekend for him as he totaled his Camaro while testing tires. He was on a pass, and at about the 1,000-foot mark, the car made a sharp right into the guardrail. It was destroyed, but Rivera got away with just cuts and bruises. He was left without a ride just two weeks before the NHRA Winternationals. Enter Bob Devour. Gordie had mentioned that he had no ride for Pomona, and Bob arranged to have Don Beverly pick up Bob Harris's car and take it to Pomona for Rivera to use. He used it well, qualifying #6 at 7.520/183.26. In round one, Gordie improved to a 7.487/183.29 to defeat Steve Schmidt's 7.59/178. In round two, Warren Johnson ended his day in a close 7.46/186 to 7.507/183.74 decision. Gordie was the first alternate in Gainesville with a 7.544/185.91. He also failed to qualify at Ennis Fall, despite a personal best of 7.472/182.22. HIs 7.63/182.37 was only good for the 7th alternate spot at the Phoenix Fallnationals. But he did get into the show at the Pomona Finals, qualifying #14 at 7.487/184.61. However, Nick Nikolis got the win in round one, 7.46/185, to Gordie's 7.537/183.74. Interestingly, Gordie ran exactly the same 7.487 ET at the Pomona Winters and Pomona Finals.
