Notes: Ken ran an 8.98 to qualify #5 at Beeline for the AHRA Winternationals. In the first round, a 9.08/152.02 beat Tim McNally's 10.25/128. A second round 9.10/152.54 lost to eventual winner Bob Glidden's 8.91/152. Ken then went to Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals where he again ran an 8.98 (152.02) in qualifying. That number was good for the #4 spot in the field. He slowed to a 9.31/148.02 in the first round, that lost to Scott Shafiroff's 9.18/150. |

Notes: Reid debuted this trick Don Hardy-built Duster in 1973, and he was tough to beat this year. His cars ran well, and he always had one of the strongest Mopars. He started the season by winning the Warner Robins Grand Opener in January. He qualified #1 in the eight-car field with a 9.45. Reid got a first-round single and then set Low ET in round two with a 9.42 over Lamar Walden. A 9.50 won the event over Buck Pike, who fouled in the final. In March, he was at Lakeland for the IHRA Winternationals. Another 9.45 qualified #6, and he lasted until round two, where Don Carlton's 9.25/132 beat Reid's 9.41/144.00. After that, it was off to Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals. A 9.23 qualified #7 and an even better 9.21 beat Ronnie Lyles' 9.29 in the first round. In the second round, he lost to Ronnie Sox's 9.20/147 with a 9.33. In April, he won the Division 2 Opener at Phenix City, where a final round 9.39 beat Ben Hicks. Still, in April, he won another race at Warner Robins, this time beating Don Nicholson in the final. Reid got stuck in traffic on the way to Englishtown for the Summernationals. He arrived late and missed the tech inspection. Two weeks later (July 29), he was back in the winner's circle at Miami's NHRA Division 2 race. He qualified #1 with a 9.24, and in the opening round, his 9.23/148.02 (Top Speed) beat Steve Bagwell. He ran a track record 9.19 at 148.02 in round two to defeat Oscar Robert's 9.54/143. Reid got the "odd-lot" solo in the semifinal and advanced with an easy 9.85/128.38. He beat a fouling William Paris in the final with a 9.26/147.54. Reid was at Blaney in October for the Dixie Nationals. He beat Stuart McDade in the final. Both had tied for Low ET at 9.14. His next stop was at Amarillo for the NHRA World Finals. He qualified #7 with a 9.56, but an off-pace 9.95/141.95 lost to Royce Freeman's 9.84/136 in the opening round. Shortly after that, he was at Lakeland for the IHRA Nationals. It was a sixteen-car show, and in the opening round, his 9.18/148.51 beat Carl Ruth. But in round two, his 9.19/148.51 lost to Don Carlton's 9.14/149. Reid was going to run at Ontario for the NHRA Supernationals, but they were postponed for a week, and he left to run the Turkey Trot National Open at Gainesville that was run on the same day. It turned out to be a wise choice, as he qualified #1 for the eight-car field with a 9.12/149.50. A 9.10/150.00 beat Oscar Roberts in round one, and a 9.04/151.00 stopped Roy Hill in the semifinals. He went up against Harold Clark in the final, and Clark fouled while Reid ran 9.02/151.00 (Low ET and Top Speed) for the victory. He picked up one last win before the season ended. He won the Snowbird National Open on December 2. Once again, he ran strong. He set Low ET and Top Speed in qualifying with an 8.99/151.77. A 9.04 beat William Paris in round one, while a 9.03 in the semifinal took out Kenny Hahn. He faced the Pinto of Hubert Platt in the final, and it was no contest as Reid's 9.07/151.51 easily dispatched Platt's 9.42/144. Reid's best NHRA National Event times were 9.160 at Sanair and 150.00 at Ontario. |

Notes: Kenny was first alternate at NHRA Gainesville at 9.222/150.25. Kenny was at Columbus in June for the NHRA Springnationals. He qualified #15 with a 9.297/147.78 but his opening round 10.03/112.64 lost to Roy Hill's 9.26/149. Hahn was third alternate at NHRA Englishtown at 9.27/148.27. He qualified #31 at Indy with a 9.37/145.86 and lost in round one, to Bert Strauss, 9.18/147 to 9.47/146. Kenny was second alternate at Ontario, running 9.256/147.20. Notes: Rich does not appear on any NHRA national event qualifying or DNQ lists for 1977, but we have two references to his being out there. The photo from the 1977 NHRA Gatornationals, Gainesville, Florida. We have an incomplete list of DNQs from that race, but he would not have gone quicker than 9.13. Rich apparently entered but did not race at NHRA Indianapolis, as well. |

Notes: Lamar was at Desoto on April 11 for the NHRA Division Two race. He qualified #2 with a 9.04/150.75. While that sounded great, the problem was, Wally Booth qualified #1 with an 8.75/155. These two would make their way into the final, where it wasn't much of a contest. Lamar tried hard, but his 9.10/150.75 was no match for the AMC's 8.77/154. |

Notes: Shay was at Phoenix on January 25 for the Winter Classic. She qualified #1, but her 9.26/147.54 in the opening round fell to eventual winner Larry Lombardo's 8.87/153. An 8.994/151.51 at the Pomona Winternationals was the first eight-second run recorded by a woman. Shay qualified #13 but lost to Richie Zul in round one, 8.90/151 to 9.12/150. That was her last NHRA national event of the year. Shay also ran 8.99/150 at NHRA D4 LaPlace LA in march. Was that 8.99 quicker than the 8.994 at Pomona? RH | Shay finished second in Division 4 Pro Stock points (behind only Shelby Jester) in 1976. Did she retire in 76 or 77? |

Notes: We have a photo from Indy 1975. Also 9.22 at IHRA Rockingham 75. Used 222 comp number also. | Lamar was at Warner Robins for the Southern Pro Stock Championships in July. He qualified #2 with a 9.00/151.50 behind Roy Hill's 8.92. On August 17, he was at Riverside Raceway for the NHRA Division Four race. Only four Pro Stock cars showed, and Lamar's 9.15/149.76 qualified last. He fouled against Jerry Haas in the first round. |

Notes: Jack was at Oklahoma City's Stars and Stripes Dragstrip for the NHRA Division Four race on June 29. His 9.41/143.55 qualified #6 for the eight-car field. In the opening round of eliminations, his improved 9.29/145 lost to Dave Kanners' 9.10/149. Won Denver WCS meet. He was at Pueblo on September 14 for the NHRA Division Five final. He had set Low ET and Top Speed in qualifying #1 with a 9.40/144.93. As only seven cars showed for the race, he got the "odd-lot" solo in round one, and ran 9.50/141.74. In the semifinals, Jack's 9.53/139.76 beat Tom Haller's 9.73/136. He was the favorite based on times going into the final against Kelly Chadwick. But the Pinto slowed to 9.63/141.07 in the final to finish runner-up to Chadwick's 9.62/141. Still, Schorr's performance netted him the Division Five Pro Stock crown. He qualified on the bump at Ontario 10/12/75 at 9.088/149.00, then went two rounds, going quicker each time. In round one, he surprised Dyno Don Nicholson, 9.06/148 to 9.15/152. He lost a narrow decision to Larry Huff in round two, 8.98/151 to 9.007/150.00. |

He also got Top Speed at 147.29, but in the final, he had problems and slowed to 10.35/101, which lost to Butch Leal's 9.44/146. At Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, he qualified with a 9.48/148.02 and a 9.70/145 advanced past round one when Jim Baker fouled. Dick got a single in round two when Mike Fons failed to show. He lost to eventual winner Don Nicholson in round three (32 car field) when his 9.60/145.86 came up second best to "Dyno Don's" 9.45/145 in his Pinto. As mentioned, he set both ends of the track record at OCIR at the final All-Pro race. Landy prevented Leal from making a clean sweep of the series. In March, he was at Fremont for the AHRA Northern Nationals. Landy qualified #1 in the sixteen-car field with a 9.16/150.25. He soloed with a 9.15/148.97 in the first round, when Monty Mantovan's Camaro broke. A 9.10/150.25 in round two beat Bob Lambeck, while a 9.07 (Low ET) at 149.75 took out Ken Van Cleave's Duster in the semifinals. Dick scored the win in the final by running 9.12/150.75 to drop Huff's 9.32/147. In April, he was at Tulsa for AHRA's Grand American race. He qualified #1 with a 9.25, but he failed to reach the finals. A few days later, he was at Sacramento for the California State Championships. Once again, he qualified #1, this time with a 9.07/149.76. He went on to win the event with a 9.17/148.52 in the final that stopped Bill Bagshaw's 9.37/146. He had another good showing at Rockingham on May 6 for the IHRA Pro-Am Championships. Landy qualified #2 with a 9.04/152.28 (Top Speed) behind Don Carlton's record-breaking 8.98. These two would work their way through the field to meet in the final. Dick started his march by running 9.11/148.76 to beat Don Grotheer's 9.34/146. He then beat John Brumley in round two before facing Sox in the semifinals. These two had a good race, with Dick's 9.08/149.25 coming out on top over Ronnie's close 9.11/148. In the final, Carlton ran another 8.98/150 to outrun Landy's 9.09/149.25. |

Notes: Ron's 9.146 at 150.00 at the Gatornationals was his first appearance at a major NHRA National Event since July 1972! The car was still using a manual 4-speed, and Ronnie fell to the Gapp & Roush Pinto, 9.05 to 9.21. Also ran 9.23 at Martin. | After dominating the Pro Stock class for the first two seasons, Sox and Martin were anxious to get back to their winning ways. But '73 was not a good season for the team. Ronnie qualified #1 at Beeline for the AHRA Winternationals with a 9.17. Unfortunately, he hurt his good engine and had to put in a backup for eliminations. In the first round, he ran 9.40/145.86 to beat a sleepy Bill Jenkins, who ran a quicker 9.25/146 in losing. Sox beat Dick Landy in round two before losing to eventual winner Don Nicholson in the semifinals. The team's next appearance came at Lakeland in March for the IHRA Winternationals, where a 9.31 qualified #3 in the field. He got an easy first-round win, and in round two, another 9.31 at 145.63 beat Bruce Walker's 9.51/140 in Barry Setzer's Vega. Sox got another easy win in the semifinals when Don Grotheer's Duster broke. He faced Don Carlton in the final, and despite running 9.29/146.00, he finished runner-up to Carlton's 9.19/141. Two weeks later (March 18), they were at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals. Ronnie ran 9.146 to qualify #3, and an opening-round 9.15 beat Roy Hill's similar Duster at 9.36. He faced another Duster in round two; this one was Reid Whisnant's. Sox ran 9.20/147 to put Reid's 9.33 on the trailer. In the semifinals, he went up against Wayne Gapp's Pinto. The 351-powered Pintos were the cars to beat in early '73, and Sox's 9.21 didn't stand a chance against Wayne's 9.05. Being very unhappy with the NHRA rules, the team spent a lot of time match racing and running IHRA events which gave the Hemis a more favorable weight brake. At Rockingham for the IHRA Pro-Am Championships, Sox qualified #4 with a 9.07/150. He improved to a 9.01/150.00 to beat Max Hurley in the first round. A round two, 9.11/148.27 beat Wilbert Smallwood, but in the semifinals, his 9.11/148.27 (again) lost to Landy's 9.08/149. The team went to Muncie on May 20 for the IHRA Northern Nationals, where Ronnie qualified #2 with a 9.35, but he lost early. In June, the USRT held a race at Maple Grove. Sox and Martin were there and won their first-round race with a 9.31/144.92, but the Duster broke in round two and slowed to an 11.37/82.94 loss to eventual winner Gapp's 9.29/141. They stopped off at Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals, where Sox qualified #12 with a 9.48. In the first round, his 9.51/144.92 lost to Butch Leal's 9.48/145. A week later (June 17), they were at Bristol for the IHRA Springnationals. Sox's 9.42 qualified #5 for the show, and in round two, he even got some "revenge" on Leal, who had beaten him the week before. Ronnie cut a great light, and his 9.55 beat Leal's quicker 9.46. Unfortunately, Ronnie lost to eventual winner Carlton in the semifinals. It was then off to Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals. It was a 32 car show, and almost 50 cars were attempting to qualify. Ronnie's 9.32 got him the #14 spot. He got past Sam Gianino in the first round, and then picked up to a 9.19/147.29 in the second round to beat Carlton's 9.28/147. But in round three, Jenkins' 9.06/150 stopped Sox's 9.20/147.54 from advancing. Another USRT event was run on August 1, and Sox made it into the semifinals before his 9.24 lost to Wally Booth's 9.22 AMC. The team went to Canada for the NHRA Grandnationals, where Sox qualified #13, but the team didn't run in eliminations as alternate Oscar Roberts took their place. At the Super Stock Magazine Nationals, a 9.33/146.10 qualified #6 in the sixteen-car field. In round one, Ronnie Manchester lost to Sox's 9.26/146.34, but a second-round 9.36/147.54 lost to Paul Blevins' 9.19/148. They were certainly overdue for a win. The next big event was the PHR Championships at Martin, Mich. Sox lasted until round two before his off-pace 9.63/118.57 lost to Leal's 9.17/149. The AHRA National Challenge race was no better for the team. Sox's 9.23/147.54 qualified #11 in the 32 car show, and a 9.25/148 advanced in round one, but he fouled against Melvin Yow in round two. The following week, they were at Indianapolis for the NHRA US Nationals. It was another 32 car field, and Sox qualified #9 with a 9.19/149.25. A 9.23 in round one, beat Carmen Rotonda, but a second-round 9.21 lost to Bob Glidden's 9.05. Back at Bristol on September 16 for the IHRA All-American Nationals, the team seemed to have gained back some strength. Ronnie qualified #4 with a 9.13 and an easy 9.30 in round one, advanced when Hill's Duster broke on the line. In round two, he beat former teammate Herb McCandless. In the semifinals, he and Nicholson had a great race, with both running 9.16. But "Dyno" got to the finish first. |

Notes: Joe was at Beeline in Jan for the AHRA Winternationals. He qualified #9 with a 9.19. That set up a first-round meeting with low qualifier Bob Glidden. It wasn't much of a race as Bob's 8.88/153 beat Joe's 9.26/147.54. He then went to Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, where his 9.24/149.00 qualified #15. In the first round, he fouled against Melvin Yow. Ran 9.24 at Pomona, 9.20 at Columbus, 9.18 at Englishtown, 9.13 at Indy, 9.057/151.79 at Ontario. |

Notes: Ran 9.130 at York Super Stock Nationals 74, 9.03 at Pomona, 9.06 at Englishtown, 9.31 at Indy, 9.12 at Ontario. | Paul had one of the three Vegas that qualified at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. His 9.13/150.50 qualified #11, but an off-pace 9.33/148.51 in the first round, lost to Bill Jenkins' 9.05/151. At the NHRA Gatornationals, he qualified #10, but his 9.01/151.51 lost to Jack Roush's 8.94/153 in round one. He qualified #11 with a 9.23 at the NHRA Springnationals, but he could not run eliminations, and alternate Jim Halloran took his place. Paul ran 9.06/149.50 to qualify #8 at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals, but he slept in the first round, and his 9.23/147.78 lost to Kelly Chadwick's 9.29/146. He got his first-round win at the NHRA Grandnationals in Canada. There he qualified #7 with a 9.06, and his first-round 9.15/148.25 beat Lee Edwards. A very satisfying, holeshot 9.05 victory over Larry Lombardo's 9.05 in Jenkins' Vega came in the second round, but he fouled away a 9.07 in the semifinals against eventual winner Wayne Gapp's 8.84. Things did not go too well at Indy for the NHRA US Nationals. It was a 32 car field, and Paul only qualified #23 with a 9.30/147.78. That set up a first-round meeting with Jenkins, who qualified #7 with a 9.10. With a two-tens disadvantage, Blevins pushed the 'tree too hard and fouled against "Grumpy," who would have been hard to catch anyway as he ran 9.02. |

Notes: Brad qualified #12 for the Bakersfield March Meet with a 9.23. He ran another 9.23 in the first round to upset Randy Humphrey's quicker 9.15. In the second round, his off-pace 9.51 lost to Kevin Rotty's 9.10. Won Division 7 in 1976 or finished 5th? The Yuill Bros. raced a lot on the divisional scene but only ran one national event, Seattle, in 1976. Brad qualified #12 at 9.027/151.51 and lost in round one to Warren Johnson, 8.81 to 9.12. |

Notes: Randy started his season at Tucson for the AHRA Winternationals. He qualified #8 in the 16 car field and lasted until the second round, where his off-pace 10.08 lost to eventual winner Warren 'johnson's 9.05. He qualified #13 at the Phoenix Winter Classic and beat Lee Edwards in the opening round, but Johnson stopped him in round two. At the Bakersfield March Meet, he qualified #4 with a 9.04, but in the first round, he slept, and his 9.15 lost to Brad Yuill's 9.23. Ontario Motor Speedway hosted an eight-car show, and Randy qualified #4. Don Lorentzen's Camaro broke in the first round, so Humphrey advanced with a 9.10/149.00. In the semifinals, his 9.04/149.76 lost to Lee Hunter's 8.86/153. Randy was the second alternate at the NHRA World Finals at Ontario at 9.111/151.00.
