Notes: Larry was at Edgewater on May 21 for the NHRA Division Three race. He qualified #5 in the eight-car field with a 9.08. Unfortunately, that set up a first-round meeting with the low qualifier, Wally Booth. As expected, Booth's 8.67/155 easily beat Peternel's 9.06/151.75. On June 4th, he was at Indianapolis for the next NhRA Division Three race. His 9.03 qualified #7, and his opening round 9.12/150.25 lost to Booth's AMC at 8.70/156. The next NHRA Division Three race was held at Martin, Michigan, on June 24. Larry's 9.01 qualified #6, and wouldn't you know it, his first-round 9.08 lost to Booth's 8.73/154. He had to be getting sick of seeing the little Hornet! On July 9th, he finally got some different competition at Edgewater for the NHRA Division Three race. He qualified #5, and this time, he faced low qualifier Joe Satmary in round one. But the Duster had some problems and slowed to 15.81 in their race, and Satmary advanced with an 8.76/154. He was back at Martin, Michigan, for the PHR Championships on August 13. A 9.30 qualified #15, and his opening round 9.37/143.76 lost to Dave Avery's 8.98/154. The final NHRA Division Three race was run the following week (Aug 20). Peternel's first-round 9.15/149.25 lost to Satmary's 8.76/154. |

Notes: Yow started the '73 season at Beeline for the AHRA Winternationals. He qualified #4 and, in the first round, beat Barrie Poole's Pinto with a 9.38. In round two, a 9.34 took out Roy Hill's Duster, and in the semifinals, he ran 9.37 to beat Wayne Gapp's ailing Pinto. That set him up to meet Don Nicholson in another Pinto in the final. Unfortunately, Yow's Dodge broke and slowed to a 10.86/88.66 for the runner-up finish to "Dyno Don's" 9.50/141. At Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, Melvin ran 9.44/145.39 to qualify #4 again. A breaking 9.76 in the first round, beat Larry Huff's Challenger at 9.96, but he could not repair in time for round two. Melvin was at National Trail on April 8 for an eight-car show. All cars ran three rounds. He soloed in the first round with a 9.17 (Low ET) at 148.51. He then lost to Bill Jenkins in the next two races with his 9.36/144.46 and 9.33/148.51, losing to the "Grump's" 9.25/149 and 9.18/150. He then came back out later and ran another 9.17 at 149. On June 2, Yow was at Blaney for the third NHRA Division Two race. It was supposed to be a sixteen-car show, but the field was too short. In the first round, Melvin's 9.33 beat Bo Moxley's 10.14. He got an easy solo in round two before setting a 9.25 track record in the semifinal while beating Max Hurley. His final-round opponent was Ronnie Lyles, and Yow had some bad luck as his transmission broke, and he had to watch Lyles motor to a 9.41 for the win. The following week(June 10), he was at Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals. The Mopars were strong as they took five of the first eight spots for the sixteen-car field. Yow's 9.43/147.29 got him the #7 spot. An opening round 9.51/148.27 beat Hill's 9.77/140, and he beat another fellow Mopar driver in round two, where his 9.53/144.92 stopped Ken Van Cleave's 10.09/122. Eventual winner Don Carlton ran 9.38/147 in the semifinal to defeat Yow's off-pace, 11.65. His next stop was Milan Dragway for the third NHRA Division Three race. He didn't hang around long as eventual winner Gapp beat him in round one. He really ran well at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals. It was a 32 car field, and his 9.21 qualified #5. He had the second quickest Mopar behind Butch Leal. A 9.23/151.26 in the opening round took out William Parris. In round two, he dropped Hill's 9.36/144 with a 9.18/150.50. In round three, Yow picked it up to 9.14 to defeat Ray Allen's 9.30. But the two quickest Mopars met in the semifinal, and Leal's 9.09/151 got the better of Melvin's 9.15/151. The "Billy the Kid" car was the quickest Mopar in qualifying for the sixteen-car field at the Super Stock Nationals. His 9.18/149.75 got the #4 spot in the show. Richie Zul fouled against him in round one, and he advanced with a 9.26/149.25. Unfortunately, in the next round, he fouled away a 9.22/148.76 while his opponent, Dave Strickler, went into the semifinal with a 9.36/143. The next day(July 29), he was at Connecticut for an eight-car show that had all cars run three rounds. The cars were all NHRA legal. In Yow's first race, his 9.20/148.76 beat Bob Riffle's 9.23/149. He could not race his second race, so Lyles filled in. In the third race, he came back out and ran 9.22/149 to top Paul Blevins' 9.28/146. He followed the NHRA tour to Canada for the NHRA Grandnationals. Surprisingly, he "only" qualified #12 in the sixteen-car field, and he was replaced in the field by Bob Judd after the Dart had broken. Shortly after that, Atco held an eight-car show. Yow didn't have the best day there as he lost both his races. In his first race, his 9.18/149.50 fell to Bill Jenkins' 9.04/151, and in his second, a 9.29/148.02 lost to Mike Fons' 9.05/151. The AHRA National Challenge race was another 32 car affair. Yow's 9.11/151.26 qualified #3 behind Leal and Gapp. in the opening round, his 9.14/148 defeated John Hagen's 9.47, and he watched Ronnie Sox foul against him in round two, so he eased it to a 9.44/103 to advance. In the third round, his 9.24/141 lost to Nicholson's 9.18/148. Ran 9.08/148, 9.11, and 9.17 in winning three straight against Jenkins at Maple Grove on 4/08/73 (4/13/73 National Dragster). Also 9.09 at NHRA Indianapolis 73 where he qualified 6th 9.162/150.25 and ran 9.052/151.51 in limitations, and 9.08 at Maple Grove 4/08/73. Melvin also ran 151.26 at PRA Tulsa. |

Notes: The Gapp and Roush team was running really well in '73, and the two thought that having two cars on the track might be the right thing to do. Jack Roush got behind the wheel of one of their Pintos and took it to Indianapolis for the NHRA Division Three opener. He qualified #6 in the eight-car field with a 9.57, and in the first round, he ran an even better 9.39/145.86 (Top Speed), but he was late off the line and lost to Rich Maskin's 9.41/142. The team took both cars to Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals. Roush did well during qualifying, running 9.45 for the #9 spot in the sixteen-car field, and he even out qualified Wayne Gapp, who got the #10 spot with a 9.48. But in the first round, Roush's 9.50/145.63 lost to eventual winner Don Carlton's 9.46/145. Gapp did better lasting until the semifinals. They took both cars to Milan for the third NHRA Division Three race. Roush qualified #5 and got to race low qualifier Don Carlton in the first round. Jack pushed the tree a little too hard and fouled. Gapp got revenge by winning the race and stopping Carlton in the final. Both also qualified at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals. Jack put his Pinto on the pole with a 9.13/148.02, but in the first round, the Pinto broke a rear end, and Bobby Yowell advanced. The team then split with Gapp going to Canada for the NHRA Grandnationals while Roush went to York for the Super Stock Nationals. Jack's 9.18/151.26 (Top Speed) qualified #3 for the sixteen-car show, and an opening-round 9.15/150.00 beat Frank Iaconio. But in the second round, Jack got off the line behind Scott Shafiroff, and his 9.35/148.76 failed to catch Scott's 9.37/145. His driving career was halted at St. Louis. There he qualified #4 with a 9.15. A 9.12 in the first round, beat Royce Freeman, and in round two, Jack beat a fouling Joe Satmary with a strong 9.04/150. He improved to 9.02/150 in the semifinals while beating Gary Kimball, but the car got loose and rolled several times at the top end of the track. It was destroyed, and Roush was taken to the hospital with a broken arm. |

Notes: Joe ran at Beeline for the AHRA Winternationals in January In the first round, he put a holeshot on second qualifier Wayne Gapp and held on for the win. In the second round, his 9.27 lost to Wally Booth's 9.17. At the NHRA Winternationals at Pomona, he qualified #9 with a 9.03/151.26. He lost early. Joe ran well at the AHRA Grandnationals at Dragway 42, West Salem, Ohio, in May. He qualified #4 in the eight-car show and then beat Floyd Williams' Pinto in the first round, with a 9.04/152.82. In the semifinals, he needed only a 9.15 to advance when Booth fouled. In the final, he ran Ken Dondero in Bill Jenkins' Vega. An 8.94/154 by Dondero gave Satmary's 9.12/153.32 the runner-up spot. Joe barely made the field at the NHRA Springnationals with a 9.15/148.27 for the #15 spot. A first-round 9.19/147.78 lost to Booth's 9.11/149. Joe failed to qualify at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals, but he made the show at Maryland International for the US Pro Stock Open. Unfortunately, he fouled in the first round. At the PHR Championships, Satmary qualified in the dreaded #9 spot with a 9.02. That made him run low qualifier, Bob Glidden, in the first round. Bob ran 9.02 to beat Joe's 9.24. |

Notes: Photo from the 1975 NHRA Gatornationals, Gainesville, Florida. Only one Pinto qualified in the field, and it was Jeg Coughlin's car driven by Bob Hiner. His 9.02 got him the #13 spot in the show. He was supposed to race Scott Shafiroff in the first round, but Scott's Mustang II had its rear end housing yanked out during qualifying, so first alternate Bobby Yowell filled in. Unfortunately for Bob, the Pinto came to the line ailing, and his 11.74 lost to Yowell's 9.30. |

Notes: Did this car go 8.97 at legal weight? Is the 155 legit at legal weight? | Mike was at Beeline Dragway for the AHRA Winternationals. He qualified #10 in the sixteen-car field with a 9.57/145.16 and in the opening round of eliminations his 9.58/142.63 lost to Wayne Gapp's 9.35/142. At Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, his 9.55/146.34 qualified #11 in the 32 car field. A first-round 9.56/144 beat Corky Booze, but he was unable to return for his second round race against Dick Landy. Fons qualified #1 at Lakeland for the IHRA Winternationals with a 9.25, and he got the "odd-lot" solo in the first round. But in round two, he was late off the line and his 9.48/146.10 lost to Don Grotheer's 9.50/145. At the NHRA Gatornationals, he ran 9.30 to qualify #8. In the opening round his 9.37 beat Ken Van Cleave. In round two he improved to 9.18 over Paul Blevins' ailing Vega, but in the semifinals, his 9.22 fell to eventual winner Don Nicholson's 9.03. |

Notes: Varde was at Maryland International for the Pro Stock Open race in July. It was a sixteen-car field, and his 9.22 qualified on the "bump." In the opening round of eliminations, his 9.25/145.00 lost to Herb McCandless' 9.12/150. Joe ran 9.245/147.05 to qualify #17 at Indy 1974. He lost to Wayne Gapp in round one with a shut-off run of 11.973/76.33. On Sept. 22, he was at Rockingham for the IHRA US Open. His 9.19 qualified #6. He improved to 9.11 in the opening round of competition to beat Sam Carroll, but in round two, Joe's 9.12 lost to eventual winner Wayne Gapp's 8.85. He qualified #9 at the World Finals at Ontario at 9.094/150.50. He ran 9.293/146.34 in a Round 1 loss to Bob Glidden. |

Notes: On May 4, Sam was at National Trail for the NHRA Division 3 race. He ran a first-round 9.11/146.34 to beat Stacy Shields' 9.39/146, but a 9.15 in the semifinal lost to the race's eventual winner Bobby Yowell, at 9.00. In June, he was back at National Trail for the NHRA Springnationals but failed to qualify. Shortly after, Sam was at Edgewater for the third NHRA Division Three race. His 9.03 qualified #2 in the eight-car field behind Bob Glidden's 8.86. An opening round 9.12/147.78 beat Bob Morrison, and he took out Floyd Williams in the semifinal. He faced Glidden in the final, and Bob had been running steady eight-second times. Gianino caught a bit of good luck when Glidden broke in the final, and he snatched the victory with a 9.09/149.50. Sam qualified at Indy with a 9.22. His best NHRA national event times were 9.073 at the Gators (# alternate) and 150.75 in a first-round loss at the Summernationals. |

Notes: Due to NHRA's Pro Stock wight breaks, Hill did not spend much of his time racing Pro Stock in '74 as he was running his SS/B Plymouth in Super Stock. In March, he was racing his Pro Stock car at Charlotte Speedway for the IHRA Southern Nationals. The track was 1/8 mile, and it was an eight-car field in the PRO categories. Roy qualified #5, meaning he would race low qualifier Lamar Walden in Barry Setzer's Vega in the first round. After a great 5.90 in qualifying, Lamar slowed to 6.08 in the first round, and lost to Hill's 6.00/118.57. Hill's 6.06/117.95 beat Sam Carroll in the semifinals and moved him into the final against Wayne Gapp. Roy ran a good 6.05/117.95 in the final, but Gapp ran a strong 5.80/123.11 for the victory. He also ran the Duster at Suffolk for the NHRA Division 2 race in April. He lasted until the semifinals, where his 9.09 lost to eventual winner Wally Booth's 8.93. At the IHRA Pro-Am Championships at Rockingham, Hill's 9.07/151.51 qualified #3 in the sixteen-car field. Unfortunately, he failed to reach the finals. At the third NHRA Division 2 race, Hill didn't win or even reach the finals, but he showed that he was making some upstairs horsepower when he ran 149.75 for Top Speed. He qualified #7 at the NHRA Springnationals with a 9.20/150.50, and in round one, his 9.26/149.75 beat Kenny Hahn. In round two, Ken Dondero fouled away a 9.22/150, and Hill advanced with a 9.51/127.11. He got another easy run in the semifinals when Bobby Yowell's Dart failed to start. Roy soloed with a 9.44/127.84. In the final, he faced Bob Glidden. Bob's Pinto had been running 9.1's throughout eliminations, so Hill gambled on the tree and lost. He fouled away a 9.22/150.00 while Glidden ran 9.11/153 for the win. The following week (June 16), he was at Bristol for the IHRA Springnationals. A 9.201 qualified #3 behind the Pintos of Glidden and John Lingenfelter. In the first round, he fouled away a 9.35 against Al Baldwin's 9.53. Hill won over an eight-car field in July at Colonial Beach. He set Low ET in qualifying with a 9.10 and then ran 9.22/146.78 to defeat Sam Auxier's 9.53/141 and 9.13/145.39 in the semifinal over a fouling Carl Hobson. He went up against Bruce Larson in the final, and Hill's 9.11/147.50 (Top Speed) got the victory over Bruce's 9.22/146. He ran really well at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals. A 9.13 only qualified #12, but in the opening round of eliminations, his 9.17/150.00 beat Richie Zul's 9.24. Only three Mopars qualified, and he was the only one left after round one. A 9.23 in round two defeated Kelly Chadwick's 9.28 and moved him into the semifinals. There was one of each brand in the semis, his Mopar, a Ford, A Chevy, and an AMC. Unfortunately, Hill's 9.34/148.76 lost to Wayne Gapp's 9.04/151. Shortly after that, he was at Maryland International for the second running of the Pro Stock Open. It was a sixteen-car field, and Roy qualified #10. in the opening round, his 9.21/149.25 lost to Bob Glidden's 8.91/153. Former Butch Leal Duster. Ran 8.95/151.00 at PRO race at NY National at 6.75 pounds per cubic inch. Photo from the 1974 NHRA Springnationals, National Trail Raceway, Columbus, Ohio. Roy ran 9.036/149.71 at NHRA Ontario 10/74. Butch ran 9.06 at Suffolk, 9.201/150.50 at Columbus (runner up), 9.139/152.28 at Englishtown (semis), and 9.30 at Indy. |

Notes: John was at Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals where he qualified #13 with a 9.105/150.25. Unfortunately, he hurt some parts and was unable to run in eliminations. John was the first alternate at Englishtown at 9.038/152.28, but he did make the first round as an alternate. He fouled against Larry Lombardo, who won 8.74/154 to John's 9.122/151.00. Notes: Jim bought Wayne Gapp's Maverick and ran it in '73. The Boss 429 was punched out to 443 inches. It was a pretty strong runner; although it did not set any track records, it did run 9.27 at Cincinnati, 9.30 at Milan, 9.27 at Oswego, Illinois, and a best of 9.04 at Saginaw. On May 5, he was at Edgewater for the Super Pro Stock Circuit race. It was an eight-car show, and in the first round, his 9.54 beat Joe Satmary. In the semifinal, Kelly Chadwick fouled against him, and Halloran advanced at 9.67. In the final, he faced the similar Boss 429 powered Maverick of Eddie Schartman. Unfortunately, Jim broke a clutch just off the line in the final while "Fast Eddie" ran 9.43 for the victory. |
