Notes: Car was purchased from the Marriott Bros. Janke was the third alternate at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals with an 8.612/155.92. He was at Green Valley Raceway on April 5 for the NHRA Western Regional opener. An 8.51/157.06 qualified #4 in the eight-car field. He improved slightly in the opening round of eliminations to an 8.50/157.61 to beat Harry Hronas' 8.88/150. Janke lost to the eventual winner Bob Glidden in the semifinal. Janke also went to Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals. It was another eight-car show, and it took an 8.60 to get in. Unfortunately, Jerry's best of 8.754 failed to make the cut. That was the team's last NHRA national event of the year.

Notes: This was a small block wedge head engine. | Brad was driving for Dick Landy at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, where he ran 8.61/158.17 to qualify #7. He lost to Tom Chelbana in the first round, via a monumental holeshot, 8.75 to 8.62. At the Bakersfield March Meet, he qualified with an 8.58, but he fouled against Sonny Bryant in the first round. He was at Fremont for the NHRA Division 6 race in April. He qualified #1 with an 8.50/159.87 (Low ET and Top Speed) and made his way to the final, where he beat his brother Mark for the title. Brad qualified #1 at the second NHRA Division 6 race at Seattle with an 8.52/159.57 (Low ET and Top Speed), but he fouled against Gary Pugh in the first round. At the third NHRA Division 6 race at OCIR, Brad qualified #2 with an 8.57/157.34 behind Kevin Rotty's 8.50. He advanced to the final with runs of 8.61/157.34 and 8.54/158.17 to meet up with Rotty in the final. Brad was a little slower than Rotty in eliminations, and he attempted to compensate, but he pushed the 'tree a little too hard and fouled away an 8.70/154.90 while Kevin got the victory with an 8.48/158. Brad was in the family Camaro at Indy and Ontario. Formerly listed 8.425/161.57. Removing those times until we get confirmation.

Notes: Roy Hill started his '81 season at Tucson for the AHRA Winternationals in January. He qualified #6 in the eight-car field, but an opening round 8.64 lost to Pat Musi's 8.32. At Pomona, for the NHRA Winternationals, he qualified in the dreaded #9 spot with an 8.56/159.01. In the first race, he faced low qualifier Bob Glidden, and his 8.66/157.34 fell to Glidden's 8.41/159. His next stop was at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals. He qualified #11 with an 8.54/158.45. In the first round, his 8.57/158.45 lost to the eventual winner Frank Iaconio's 8.39/161. Did Roy go 8.355 at 165.59 in 1981? It's listed as match race times. Roy recorded his best NHRA legal times at the World Finals at OCIR: 8.505/159.85.

Notes: Larry qualified #4 at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. His 8.510/157.61 followed Bob Glidden, Lee Shepherd, and Frank Iaconio. That was pretty good company. But in the first round, of eliminations, he fell off to 8.71/154.63 in a loss to Butch Leal's 8.63/157. He then competed at the Bakersfield March Meet. Only six cars showed, and he set Low ET with his 8.57/157.06 in qualifying. Unfortunately, the car broke in round one, and slowed to 10.08 in a loss to Terry Sherrill's 8.70.

Notes: NHRA Division 7 racer. Photo from the 1979 NHRA US Nationals, Indianapolis Raceway Park. Larry finished 6th in NHRA points in 1980, his best year. | Larry qualified #5 at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals with an 8.60/156.24. Unfortunately, he lost to Gordie Rivera in the first round. At the Gatornationals, he qualified #9, a very unlucky spot as he faced low qualifier Bob Glidden in the opening round and lost. He made a stop at Warner Robins for the Division Two opener and cleaned the house. He ran 157.34 for Top Speed, set a new track record 8.58. In the final, he faced off against Roy Hill, and Hill must have known the advantage Johnson's Camaro had over his Horizon in performance as he fouled and Larry got the victory with an 8.60/156.79. The next NHRA National event was the Cajun Nationals at Baton Rouge. It was just an eight-car field, but Larry showed that he had what it takes to qualify. A strong 8.52 at only 152.28 qualified #4, but in round one, he was a little late of the line, and Bill Jenkins' 8.59/156 beat his 8.58/157.34. His disappointment didn't last long as a week later, he won the Division Six race at Seattle. An opening round 8.64/154.63 had beaten Terry Sherrill's 8.86/150, and in the semifinals, he soloed with an 8.92/120 when Gary Pugh's Monza broke. He faced the Mopar of Randy Humphrey in the final, and Larry's 8.69/154.90 grabbed the win over Randy's close 8.71/153. Two weeks later, he was at OCIR for the next Division Six race. He qualified #5 with an 8.65/155.44, but low qualifier, and eventual winner Kevin Rotty, beat his 8.69/155.97 in the first round, with an 8.55/157. Larry did not attend the Springnationals at Columbus, but he did run at the Mile High Nationals at Denver. The car broke in its first-round race against Rotty. He qualified in the top half(#6)of the field at Englishtown for the Summernationals with an 8.58/157.06 and another 8.58 at 155.70 beat Don Campanello's 8.85/154 in the opening frame. But in round two, Lee Shepherd's 8.50/162 put Johnson's 8.59/157.34 on the trailer. He qualified #1 with an 8.71 at Blaney Drag Strip for the Division Two final, but he failed to reach the finals. He also lost early at Bonneville for the Division Five race. Larry set a 9.07 track record in qualifying #1, but a sleepy 9.16/147.55 in the first round, lost to Russell Pierson's 9.21/147. He recouped with a win at the next Division Five race held at Brainerd. An 8.70/154.10 stopped Bill Prince's 9.07/149, and a semifinal 8.81/153.32 advanced when Pierson fouled. In the final, he faced John Hagen, and Larry's 8.68/155.17 held on for the victory over Hagen's 8.70/154. He did not race in Canada for the Grandnationals.

A first-round 8.60/158.45 beat Gordie Rivera's 8.62/157, but in the second round, he lost to eventual winner Bob Glidden's 8.47/159 with an 8.66/159.29. At the NHRA Gatornationals, he qualified #12 with an 8.54/158.45. In the first round, he fouled away an 8.523/161.00 against Pat Musi's 8.50/159. He was the first alternate at the NHRA Springnationals with a best of 8.70/154.63. Paul got into the show when Warren Johnson's Starfire broke, but his 8.70/157.85 in the first round, lost to Bob Ingles' 8.58/155. He lost at the NHRA Eastern Regional at Indianapolis in the first round, when he fouled away an 8.708/154.63 against Musi's 8.64/159. Originally listed 161.87 speed, but removed that until we get confirmation. This was a small black wedge, not a hemi.

Notes: NHRA Pro Stock Champion. Ran 8.52 NHRA record in August 77. Won Gators, Springs, Indy, 8.572 at Englishtown for a new record (and his best national event ET). Ran 8.70/157.61 at Pomona, 8.64 at Gainesville, 8.68 at Columbus, 8.61 at Indy, 8.58 at Seattle. | "Dyno Don" returned to his winning ways in '77. After concentrating heavily on his match race program in '76, he returned to NHRA competition for '77. He did not race at the AHRA Winternationals, but at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, he showed that he could still run with the "big dogs" by qualifying #1 with an 8.70/158.17. He beat Ken Dondero driving the "Gapp and Roush" Pinto in the first round, with an 8.90/155.97. In round two his 8.73/155.17 beat Kevin Rotty and a semifinal 8.73/156.25 took out Bob Glidden's slightly quicker 8.72/157. In the final he faced Larry Lombardo driving Bill Jenkins' Monza. Larry had run 8.65 in his semifinal race and that must have had Don a little nervous at the fouled away an 8.77/157.61 while Lombardo got the victory with an 8.61/158. "Dyno" then went to Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals where once again he qualified #1, this time with an 8.65/155.90. He stayed in the 8.6s in the first two rounds with runs of 8.66/157.61 (Top Speed) and 8.65 to beat Gordie Rivera and Dale Evans. Don slowed to 8.74/157.34 in the semifinals when Lombardo fouled against him. He was supposed to meet Wally Booth in the final, but Booth had blown his engine while beating Dondero in the semifinals, and he was unable to swap in another engine for the final. Don got to run a solo for the win, but he still put his foot into it and set Low ET with an 8.64/157 for the victory. The following week (March 20), he was at LaPlace for the NHRA Division 4 opener. To say he did well was an understatement. He qualified #1, set Top Speed and Low ET (8.67) and he beat Richie Zul in the "Reher-Morrison" Monza in the final with an 8.69/153.06 for the title. Another win came at Warner Robins on March 27 for the NHRA Division 2 opener. He qualified #4 at Baton Rouge for the NHRA Cajun Nationals with an 8.70, but he was unable to stick around after the rain delay. Another major win came at the NHRA Springnationals. His 8.68 qualified #3 and in the final, his 8.78/153.06 beat Frank Iaconio's 8.80/153. At the second NHRA Division 2 race at Blaney, Nicholson picked up another win. Englishtown was the next stop on the NHRA tour for the Summernationals and Don's 8.64/157.06 qualified #2. He improved to 8.58/157 in the first round, over Bob Ingles while an 8.57 got around Zul in round two. In the semifinals, Don was late off the line and his 8.67 lost to Iaconio's 8.75. Nicholson followed the NHRA tour to Canada for the NHRA Grandnationals. He qualified #2 in the eight-car field with an 8.67, but he lost to Warren Johnson in the first round. Don returned to his winning ways at Suffolk for the next NHRA Division 2 race. He set Low ET in qualifying #1 with an 8.66 and then ran 8.98/147.29 in the first round, over Roy Hill who broke. In the semifinals, he got an "odd-lot" solo and ran 8.67. This put him into the final against Ingles. "Dyno" wrapped it up with an 8.66/155.97 (Top Speed). At this point in the year, the points chase appeared to be Nicholson vs. Lombardo with Glidden closing from the rear. So, Don made a trip to New England for the NHRA Division 1 points race. This was made to stop Lombardo from winning the race and getting the points. It paid off as not only did "Dyno" win (beating Lombardo in the final), but his final round 8.52 was a new NHRA record, giving him some much-needed points. He then went to Gainesville where he also won the NHRA Division 2 final. Then came Indy, where Nicholson scored his biggest win of the year at the NHRA US Nationals. He set Low ET in qualifying #1 with an 8.61 and then ran 8.67/155 over Jerry Haas and 8.74/155 over a fouling Johnson in round two. A semifinal 8.72/155 beat points rival Lombardo, and then he went up against a rejuvenated Glidden, who was running strong and closing in on the points gap between him and Lombardo/Nicholson. Glidden broke in the final and "Dyno" got the victory with an 8.73/154. Don’s best speed this year was a 158.73 at the Cajun Nationals.

Notes: Also used a 340-inch engine. | Don's season started at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. Things didn't go so well. He made two sub-par passes with a best of 9.16. He and crew chief Jon Kaase changed engines and hoped for better results. Unfortunately, after waiting in line for six hours for one last qualifying attempt, the two of them watched as qualifying ended just two cars in front of them. It was a tough break. At the NHRA Gatornationals, Don qualified #5 with an 8.65/156.79. But in the process, he hurt his good engine. After changing engines, he ran 8.69/157 to beat Joe Satmary's 8.78/155 in round one, before losing to Bob Glidden's 8.59/151 in round two with an 8.73/154. At the NHRA Cajun Nationals, his 8.65 qualified #4 in the eight-car field. But in the opening round of eliminations, his off-pace 8.89/152.80 lost to Sonny Bryant's 8.74/155. On May 7th, he was at Englishtown for the NHRA Division One opener."Dyno's" 8.61 qualified #2 behind Richie Zul's 8.58. He really stepped it up in the first round, where his 8.52/157.61 beat Bernie Agaman's 8.73/157. But in the semifinal, his 8.60/157.34 lost to Frank Iaconio's 8.57/153.

Notes: Terry ran really well at the NHRA Winternationals, running an 8.566/157.61 to qualify #8. Unfortunately, his 8.65/157.06 lost to Bob Ingles' 8.62/158 in the first round. He went to Famoso for the Bakersfield March Meet, where they held a six-car Pro Stock show. Terry qualified #4 with an 8.68/158.45 and, in the first round, beat low qualifier Larry Johnson with an 8.70/155.97. He got the odd-lot single in the semifinals. In the final, he ran Mark Yuill, but he crossed the centerline and gave Mark the win. He was at OCIR for the NHRA Western Regional. An 8.70/157.97 qualified #3. He singled in the first round, with an 8.65/159.01 when Jim Basko could not show. But Terry fouled away an 8.88/159.85 in the semifinals against Mark Yuill's 8.60/158. He was at Fremont early in October for the NHRA Golden Gate Nationals. An 8.54/159.57 qualified #15, and in round one, his 8.60/158.17 lost to Bob Glidden's 8.37/159. Terry qualified on the "bump" for the sixteen-car field at OCIR for the NHRA World Finals with an 8.525/158.73. His 8.63/155.70 in the opening round fell to Mark Yuill's 8.48/158.

Notes: Allen qualified #10 with an 8.56/156.79 at the season-opening NHRA Winternationals at Pomona. He fouled against Lee Shepherd in the first round. At the NHRA Gatornationals, it was almost a carbon copy of Pomona. He qualified #10 with an 8.528/158.17 and lost to Shepherd's 8.41/159 in the first round, with an 8.61/156.52. The Gainesville qualifying numbers was their best of the year. The Jenkins and Allen team failed to qualify at most of the other NHRA events they attended. Ray was the fourth alternate at the NHRA Springnationals with an 8.78/150.28 best. The NHRA Summernationals saw an 8.78/155.17 being the fifth alternate. They did qualify for the US Nationals at Indianapolis. An 8.60/155.44 qualified #13. Ray lost to John Hagen's Arrow in the first round. An 8.59/156.52 was the second alternate at the Golden Gate Nationals, and they ended the year as the first alternate at the NHRA World Finals with an 8.53/156.24. One of the reasons the team wasn't up to par with their NHRA equipment was that they were running a lot of big-inch match race stuff this year.

Notes: Bryant was at Tucson for the AHRA Winternationals. He lasted until the semifinals before his 9.12/151.26 lost to eventual winner Don Nicholson's 9.07/150. At Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, his 8.73/155.70 qualified #7. An opening round 8.67/155.17 beat Lee Hunter's 8.88/153, and an 8.68/156.25 advanced when Lee Shepherd broke. In the semifinals, Roy Hill's Arrow broke, and Bryant's 8.64/157.06 advanced. He faced another Arrow in the final. This one was Bob Glidden's. As well as Sonny had been running, there was no stopping Glidden this day as he was running 8.4's. Sure enough, Bob's final round 8.49 got the victory over Bryant's 8.71. At the NHRA Gatornationals, Sonny qualified #5 with an 8.65/158.17. A first-round 8.67/156.52 beat Billy Wash, but in round two, he fouled away an 8.73/156.52 against Glidden, who ran 8.55/149.

Notes: Animal Jim's legendary Mercury Zephyr Pro Stock was built by Chassis Craft (Greg Kaplin & Woody Mays) in 1979. This was the car that made Animal Jim a major match race star. From 1979 to 1990, it ran in every sanction, circuit, and mode possible. Pictured above is Animal Jim and "Zeke" at the 1980 AHRA Nationals at St. Louis International Raceway (now Gateway International Raceway) where he was the #1 qualifier. A week later he won Pro Stock at Cordova Dragway (Illinois) when he beat Jerry Haas in the final. Jim ran normally-aspirated Cleveland small blocks in 1979 and 80.

Notes: Terry attempted to qualify at the NHRA Winters (DNQ but no times available). He was in Seattle on May 4 for the second NHRA Division Six race. In the opening round, his 8.86/150.50 fell to Larry Johnson's 8.64/154. Terry also ran 8.910/151.00 (first alternate) at Seattle. He was the third alternate at the NHRA World Finals at 8.804/155.97 (third alternate). Sherrill had his Camaro delivered to him from Alston Engineering in June. He paid about $10,000 for it, but after having the interior tin and the body detailing done, he was up to around $14,000 without a powertrain. Terry ran a destroked big block of 396 cubic inches to fit the NHRA factoring rules of the day. He ran it for two years before selling it in the spring of '83 for $14,200. Sherrill said, "That was probably the best car I've ever had." We need to confirm the 8.55/156.79 numbers. Did those occur at an NHRA Division 6 or AHRA event?

Notes: Rivera qualified #13 with an 8.58/157.06 at the NHRA Winternationals. A first-round 8.62 lost to Paul Gentilozzi's 8.60. Gordie was the first alternate at Indy for the NHRA US Nationals with an 8.61/157.06 best. He was unfortunate enough to also be the first alternate at Fremont for the NHRA Golden Gate Nationals with an 8.550/158.45 best. His bad luck continued at OCIR for the NHRA World Finals, where he was the fourth alternate with a best of 8.62/156.52.

Notes: Frank won his first national event at the 78 Gatornationals over a redlighting Bob Glidden. Photo from 1978 US Nationals. Also 8.666/155.44 at Pomona Winters 2/78 (#3 qualifier), and 8.60 at Gainesville. | Frank Iaconio started his season at Tucson for the AHRA Winternationals. It was an eight-car field, and his 8.91/151 qualified #3. He beat Tom Chelbana in round one, before losing a close race in the semifinals that saw his 8.94/151.51 fall to Sonny Bryant's 8.94/153. At Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, his 8.66/155.44 qualified #3, and an opening-round 8.68/157 beat Randy Humphrey's 8.92/153. In round two, his 8.72/154 stopped Chelbana's 9.00/146, but a semifinal 8.73/157.34 lost to eventual winner Bob Glidden's 8.69/154. Frank won his first NHRA National event at the NHRA Gatornationals. He qualified #2 with an 8.60/157.61 behind Glidden's 8.54/153. In the first round, his 8.66/155 beat Mark Yuill's 8.80/154. An 8.67/155 in round two took out AMC's lone hope in the field, Wally Booth, at 8.70/154. He ran Larry Lombardo driving Bill Jenkins similar SRD-built Monza in the semifinals, and Frank's 8.68/155 prevailed over Lombardo's 8.70/155. He was up against Glidden in the final, and Bob had been running about a tenth faster all through eliminations. Smart money was on the Pinto to win, but Bob fouled away an 8.58/159 while Frank eased it through with a 9.06/123.45 to pick up the money. Frank was runner-up to Lombardo at the NHRA Division 1 Opener at Englishtown when the Monza broke on the line in the final. He repeated that finish at the next Division 1 race held at Cayuga. His 8.61/157.61 finished second best to Larry's 8.59/157. He didn't run as well as he would have liked at Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals. His 8.75/155.17 only qualified #9, and it set up a first-round meeting with low qualifier Warren Johnson. Warren was over a tenth quicker (8.63) in qualifying, so Iaconio took a chance and fouled. He had to try as he still ran 8.87 while Johnson advanced with an 8.74. He was also runner-up to Lombardo at the Division 1 race at Maryland, where Larry's 8.61/156 topped his 8.68/155.70 in the final. An 8.64/156.52 qualified #2 at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals and an opening-round 8.68/156.52 advanced. But in round two, he slowed to 8.71/156.25 and lost to Joe Satmary's 8.65/157. Frank's next stop was back at Maryland for the US Pro Stock Open. Unfortunately, there he lost in the first round. He followed the NHRA tour to Canada for the Grandnationals, where he ran 8.66 to qualify #3 in the eight-car field. Frank got a great light in the first round, that saw his 8.77/153.58 hold off Ronnie Manchester's quicker 8.72/154, but, in the semifinals, his 8.73/154.63 lost to eventual winner Glidden's 8.55/149 in his new "boxcar" Fairmont.

Notes: Warren did not race at all the NHRA national events in 1981. He spent a large part of the year running the Jerome Bradford Monte Carlo on the IHRA trail. WJ's first NHRA event was in Atlanta in April. He qualified number 7 at 8.583/157.34. In round one, he lost to Bob Glidden, 8.50/158 to 8.632/156.24. At the NHRA SpringNationals in Columbus, Warren qualified number 14 at 8.686/156.52. Warren could not make it for the first-round, and Paul Gentilozzi took his spot against Bob Ingles in the field. At the NHRA Summernationals in Englishtown, Warren qualified number 11 at 8.552/158.73. Unfortunately, that lined him up against Bob Glidden in round 1. Glidden took an 8.53/159 to 8.656/155.70 victory. At Indy for the US Nationals, Warren qualified number 16 at 8.616/160.14. In round 1, David Hutchins ended Warren's NHRA season with an 8.50/158 to 8.810/154.37 shellacking. This year, Warren used a 340-inch engine, and it was clear the smaller displacement was not giving him the results his standard big blocks did.

Notes: Photo from NHRA WWCS Regional meet at Green Valley in April 1981. Taylor qualified #6 with a career-best 8.55 at 158.17 but lost to Bob Glidden's 8.25 (back-up for national record 8.23 run in semis) in Round 1. This was the Best Appearing Car at the 1981 Gatornationals. Mike Edwards drove the car in 1982. Stanley Morton also drove this car. The team also raced it in Comp eliminator. Fourth alternate at the Gators at 8.660/154.90. First alternate at Atlanta's eight-car show for the NHRA Southern Nationals, where his 8.617 best failed to make the show. Second alternate at Baton Rouge with an 8.618. Sixth alternate at Columbus at 8.836/152.82. Qualified #16 at Englishtown at 8.654/154.90. Lost first-round to John Hagen, 8.59/162 to 8.72/152. Third alternate at Indy at 8.652/154.90. That was the team's last NHRA national event of the year.
