Notes: Car ran legal mid to low 9's in 1973. A 1973 Duster was constructed by S&M for Dave late in the year, but was never raced. Car went back to S&M when Chrysler decided to boycott Pro Stock for 1974. |

Notes: Trick. Won '72 Gators with a best of 9.55, including this win over Ronnie Sox in Round 1. - DO | Had Pro Stock Low ET/Top Speed at '72 IHRA Longhorn Nationals (Dallas) in final over Ronnie Sox. - RT | The Motown Missile bunch did not race at the AHRA Winternationals, but they were at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals where he qualified #7 in the 32 car field. In the third round, Carlton faced Ronnie Sox and his quick-leaving 9.68 beat Sox's quicker 9.64. In the semifinals, he came up against Bill Jenkins and his new Vega. Don tried hard, but his 9.82/141.95 was no match for Jenkins' 9.68/140. Things went much better at the NHRA Gatornationals. He had only qualified #12 in the sixteen-car field with a 9.70, but he improved to 9.58/142.85 in the first round, to beat Sox who missed a shift. In the second round, his 9.56/142.85 beat Bruce Walker's 9.77/140 in Barry Setzer's big block Camaro. In the semifinals, he faced Ken Dondero driving Don Nicholson SOHC-powered Maverick. The two had a close race with Don's 9.55/143.08 holding off Ken's 9.54/143. This put the "Missile" in the final against Melvin Yow. Yow's best in eliminations was 9.70, so he had to gamble on the 'tree. He lost it and fouled away a 9.75/138 while Carlton got the victory with another 9.55 at 143.54. In April, Carlton was at Rockingham for the IHRA Pro-Am Championships, but he was driving his own Demon. The next race for the "Motown Missile" was at Dallas on June 5 for the IHRA Longhorn Nationals. Don qualified #1 with a 9.43/146 in the sixteen-car field. He faced the old "Motown Missile" car now driven by John Livingston in the first round, and his 9.50/144.46 put John on the trailer. He soloed in round two with a 9.52/144.46 when Chuck Wright failed to appear. In the semifinals, he ran 9.48/146.57 to beat Mike Fons' 9.65/142 in the "Rod Shop" Challenger. This moved him into the final against Sox. Ronnie had been in the 9.60s throughout eliminations and it was no surprise when Carlton carded Low ET and Top Speed in the final with a 9.42/146.57 to beat Sox's 9.63/143 runner-up attempt. A week later (June 11), Don was at Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals. He qualified #2 with a 9.66 right behind Jenkins' 9.65. But in the opening round, the car broke and advanced opponent Don Grotheer into the next round. Don was at Bristol the following week after that, for the IHRA Springnationals, but once again he was driving his own car. He also drove his own car to a win at the NHRA Division 1 race at Maple Grove on June 24. He won the USRT race at York US 30 in July driving the "Missile.” All cars ran a qualifying round and his 9.46/145.63 beat Wally Booth's Gremlin at 9.61/140. In the semifinals, Don's 9.50/145.39 beat Dondero's 9.61/142 and set up another Sox vs. Carlton final. Sox was at the show running his new Duster and was running 9.40s. The final was close with Carlton's 9.36/146.10 edging Sox's 9.40/145 for the title. It was then off to Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals. It was a 32 car field and Carlton's 9.69 qualified #7. A first-round 9.88 beat Alban Gauthier and in round two his 9.72 beat Walker. In the third round, his 9.69 lost to Herb McCandless' 9.59. He jumped between his own car and the "Missile" so it was hard to tell which he was driving during the season, but at the High Altitude Nationals he won driving his own Demon. At the IHRA Empire Nationals, he lasted until the semifinals before losing to eventual winner Jenkins. But I'm not sure which car he was driving there. He was back in the "Missile" at Englishtown on August 6 for a USRT race where while he didn't reach the final he did run as well as 9.43/145 while beating Dondero. He did not attend the IHRA Summernationals at Dragway 42 on August 20. |

Notes: Also ran 9.56 at Beech Bend KY. | Mike Fons did not race at the AHRA Winternationals or any other AHRA events in '72. He qualified #10 for the 32 car field at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. He beat Jim Baker in the first round, before losing to Butch Leal in round two. At Gainesville, for the NHRA Gatornationals, his 9.56 qualified #3. He was behind Bill Jenkins' Chevy and Ken Dondero's Ford, but he out-qualified all the other Mopar entries. And there were a lot as the rest of the sixteen-car field, save one, was all-Mopar. In the opening round, his 9.77 beat Irv Beringhaus' 9.91. But a sleepy 9.68/139.31 in round two lost to Melvin Yow's 9.83/136. Mike was at the first USRT race in April where he qualified #3 with a 9.62. The USRT events were run at NHRA weights, but rosin was allowed. He failed to reach the finals there. He also qualified #1 for the first NHRA Division Three race held at Indianapolis with a 9.74. But once again he failed to reach the final. He was at Capitol Raceway for another USRT event in May. Qualifying wasn't much of an issue as Mike's 13.57 qualified #15. The USRT races were run differently, with a first-place winner, a second-place winner, and a third. Because of where Fons qualified, he was in the third group. He ran 9.45/145.53 to reach the final over Dave Strickler who broke. In the final, his opponent, Ronnie Lyles, broke a transmission, and Fons picked up the third-place honors with a strong 9.39/146.07. The "Rod Shop" team had been absent for any IHRA events until June when they showed up at Dallas for the IHRA Longhorn Nationals. Mike qualified #3 with a 9.61 behind Don Carlton and Ronnie Sox. A slightly better 9.60/143.31 beat Charlie Lasater's 10.11/136 in the first round. Tony Branson fouled against him in round two and his 9.67/141.95 advanced. But in the semifinals, his 9.65/142.40 lost to eventual winner Carlton's 9.48/146 in the "Motown Missile." The following week (June 11), he was at Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals. He qualified #5 and an opening-round 9.75 advanced when Jerry Miller fouled. A second-round 9.77 lost to the unstoppable Vega of Jenkins in round two that ran 9.62/143 to win. Fons then went to Bristol where 32 cars were attempting to qualify for the sixteen-car field at the IHRA Springnationals. His 9.84 qualified #5. He beat Roy Hill in the first round, with a 9.89, but in round two, he fouled against Jenkins. He had to take the chance as "Grumpy" ran 9.68. By this time, most of the other Mopar teams were switching over to the A-body cars, the Dusters, and Demons, and shelving their larger Challengers and 'Cudas. The "Rod Shop" team, as well as a few others such as Dick Landy, still bucked the trend. Fons showed that the big cars still had a place in Pro Stock racing. At York US 30, the USRT held another race. Mike won second place honors. He ran 9.42/145.16 to reach the final, stopping Herb McCandless' 9.49/144. In the final, he really put down a number. He set Low ET with a 9.36/145.39 to beat Don Grotheer's 9.54/145 for the title. His next stop was at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals. It was a 32 car show and Mike's 9.67 qualified #5. A first-round 9.72 whipped Ray Allen's 9.83 Vega effort. A second-round 9.69/141.06 beat Strickler. But he met with that pesky white Vega in round three and despite running his best of the weekend, his 9.50/144.00 lost to "Grumpy's" 9.41/144. At every event where he lost to Jenkins, Jenkins went on to win the event. This was no exception. Just a couple of days later (July 19), he was at Atco for the USRT event. He didn't win there, but did run a strong 9.53/143.31 in beating Carlton. A victory finally came his way on July 28 when Fons won the fourth NHRA Division Three race held at Tri-City. There he stopped the AMC of Wally Booth in the final. He also won third place honors at the Englishtown USRT race held at Englishtown on August 6. A final round 9.56/142 beat Rich Mirarcki. Mike qualified #1 for the New England Grande American event. He reached the final by running 9.61/143 and 9.59/143 over Bob Cortes and Dutch Irrgang. He faced Landy in the final and Fons had the edge based on times as Landy had run 9.64 twice to reach the final. But in the final, Fons made a rare slip as he missed a shift and slowed to 12.98 in a runner-up finish to Landy's 9.67. Dragway 42 in West Salem, Ohio, hosted the IHRA Summernationals on August 20. Mike qualified #4 with a 9.58 and in the opening round, he improved to 9.51/148.02 to beat Arlen Vanke's 9.65/146. But he had problems in round two and slowed to 9.95 in a loss to Reid Whisnant's 9.62. Edgewater held an eight-car show that had all cars make three runs. The two lowest ET cars ran for the title. Fons fouled against "Fast Eddie" Schartman in the first round. He had problems in the second. And in the third, his 9.51 beat Don Grotheer. His time did not advance him into the final. | Ran 9.437/144.00 at Tulsa OK PRA 1972. |

Notes: Barrie was at Cayuga in his new Pinto for an eight-car show in October. He beat Alban Gauthier's 9.93/139 in the first round, with a 9.63/141.06, but he lost in the semifinals. Shortly after that, he was at Amarillo for the NHRA World Finals, where he qualified #3 on the Eastern team with a 10.01. Poole lasted until the second round before his 10.13/133.52 lost to Dutch Irrgang's 10.10/132. Poole qualified second at Ontario with a 9.437/146.10; he then ran 9.39/144.46, 9.367/145.16, and 9.42/143.76 in eliminations. The 9.42 lost to a Bob Glidden holeshot 9.43. Raced at the Pinto at the 1973 Pomona Winters, Barrie sold it to Jack Roush and quit. Used Doug Nash transmission. AKA Border Bandit. |

Notes: AKA Northwest Thunder. Ken eventually sold the car to Billy Stepp. | Ken was at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, where he qualified #12 in the 32 car field with a 9.57/146.34. A first-round 9.85 was all he needed as his competition broke. In round two, his 9.72 lost to Jack Roush's 9.63. He ran well at Fremont for the AHRA Northern Nationals, where he made it into the semifinals before losing to the eventual winner Dick Landy. A week later(March 18), he was at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals. Ken qualified on the "bump" for the sixteen-car field with a 9.37, but an off pace 10.21 lost to Mike Fons' 9.37 in the opening round. He stayed busy, as the following week, he was at OCIR for the final All-Pro race. He qualified #12 for the sixteen-car show, but he lost to Larry Huff in the opening round. |
