Notes: Landy was at Tucson Dragway in Jan for the AHRA Winternationals. He qualified #3 with an 8.74/153.58, but an off-pace 9.23 lost to Gordie Rivera in the opening round. He then went to Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, where his 8.99 qualified #12. Unfortunately, he lost to Dave Kanners in the first round. Winner at Sacramento Raceway 2/76. His next stop was at Famoso for the Bakersfield March Meet. An 8.85 qualified #2 behind Larry Huff's 8.82. He was upset in the first round, by Tom Chelbana. On May 16, Landy was at El Paso Dragway for the NHRA Division Four race. He beat Paul Peyton's 10.10 in the first round, with a 9.49/136.04, and in the semifinals, his 9.48/142.18 beat Kelly Chadwick. He faced Lee Shepherd in the final, and Shepherd's 9.33/143 got the victory over Landy's 9.48/128.26 runner-up effort. The car was destroyed at OCIR during the PDA Championships on July 31. He had set Low ET while qualifying #1 for the eight-car field with an 8.87/154.63. He made an easy solo in round one, when Sonny Bryant's Camaro broke. In the semifinals, he ran 8.86/150.25 to beat Kevin Rotty's 8.96/153. But then all hell broke loose. A tire blew, and the car took a hard left into his guardrail. It then crossed the track and smacked the guardrail on the opposite side of the track. The car was a mess, but he was ok. Ran 8.79/155.79 at Fremont Raceway WCS 3/76. Ran 9.04/150.25 track record at Tucson 5/17/76.

Notes: Lee qualified #9 at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals with an 8.81/154.10, but unfortunately for him, that set up a first-round meeting with low qualifier Bob Glidden. Hunter improved slightly to an 8.770 at 153, but he lost to eventual winner Glidden's 8.56 (Low ET) shot. At the NHRA Gatornationals, an 8.780/155.17 qualified the car in the #14 spot. In the first round, he faced the lone AMC car in the program, the Hornet of Wally Booth, and an 8.85/154 lost to Booth's 8.79/156. Lee ran well at the rain-delayed Bakersfield March Meet. It was a sixteen-car field, and in the opening round of eliminations, his 8.86 advanced when his opponent, Ray Cunningham, fouled. Tom Chelbana fouled against him in round two, so Hunter's 8.85/153.06 moved into the semifinals. There he faced Sonny Bryant. Sonny's big-block Camaro had been running 8.6's on every pass, so he knew that he was tough to beat. Hunter picked up over a tenth in their race, but it still wasn't enough as his 8.74/154.63 lost to Bryant's 8.63/155. On April 2, he scored a victory at the NHRA Division 7 race at Fremont. Hunter qualified #4 in the eight-car field with an 8.72/153.06. Another 8.72 at 152.80 beat Chelbana's 8.84/153 in round one. A semifinal 8.71/154.37 beat Mark Yuill's 8.75. He faced Bryant in the final, and this time, he got some revenge from his loss to him at Bakersfield. Both ran 8.75, but the "win" light came on in Lee's lane. After winning at Fremont, it was surprising to see Lee's name among the non-qualifiers for the next NHRA Division Seven race held at OCIR. Hunter was at Sacramento on June 18 for the third NHRA Division Seven race. His 8.71/154.11 qualified #6, but he fouled away an 8.85/151.01 in the opening round against eventual winner Sonny Bryant who advanced at 8.61/156. The next NHRA Division Seven race was run at Bonneville Raceway early in July. Lee ran 9.20/144.24 to beat Dale Falk in the opening round. In the semifinal, his 9.17/146.35 fell to Kevin Rotty's 9.11/148. Lee was the first alternate at NHRA Indy at 8.800/154.90 and at Ontario for the NHRA World Finals with a best of 8.852/153.58.

Notes: Jim was at Orlando, Florida, on June 18 for the third NHRA Division Two race. Unfortunately, in round one, his troubled 10.01 lost to Charlie Peppers' 9.18. He debuted a new Duster at Suffolk on July 9 and won the fourth NHRA Division Two race. The car was consistent, running 8.84/152.80 in round one, to beat Carl Hobson's 9.05/149 and another 8.84 at 153.84 to defeat Richie Zul's quicker 8.75/155. He faced Dempsey Hardy in the final, and his 8.91/152.80 won when Hardy fouled. Kinnett qualified #13 at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals. His 8.71/154.37 lost to Richie Zul's 8.70/155 in a very close race in the opening round of eliminations. Jim was at Miami-Hollywood on July 30 for the final NHRA Division Two race. He ran 8.92/154.90 (Top Speed) in the opening round before his 8.95/154.30 lost to Bob Glidden's new Fairmont at 8.71/153. Shortly after that (August 13), he was at Martin, Michigan, for the PHR Championships. It was a sixteen-car field, and his 8.82 was the fastest Mopar, qualifying #6. But he hurt the engine and was unable to run in eliminations. At Indy, for the NHRA US Nationals, he had one of three Mopars that made the field. His 8.77/154.90 got him the #14 spot in the show. In the first round, his 8.78/154.77 lost to Lee Shepherd's 8.67/153. The following week (September 9), he was at Cumberland International Raceway for the NHRA Country Boy Open. It was an eight-car field, and in the opening round, his 8.82/151.57 beat Art Gravatt's 9.32/145. He did not receive an ET in the semifinal, but his speed was 151.77 while defeating Sam Carroll's 9.34/121. He went up against Wally Booth's AMC in the final, and the two had a good race that saw the Hornet's 8.84/152 get the victory over the Duster's 8.89/154.90 (Top Speed). He did not race at Seattle for the NHRA Fallnationals. Jim scored a big win near the end of the year (November 19) at the Turkey Trot Nationals in his new Volare. Former Fun City Flyer, former Arlen Vanke car. We also have 8.63/155.70 times for this car at match race weight. Best NHRA National Event times were 8.710 at the Summers and 154.90 at Indy.

Notes: Gapp and Roush debuted their all-new fordor Maverick in June at Mayland International. The car was successful from the start, winning the race with a 9.03/154.03 in the final over Richie Zul's 9.07/150. The Maverick had been built to take advantage of NHRA's new for '74 rules that allowed cars with over a 105" wheelbase and running a wedge-type engine, a 6.45 Lb. weight break. The same Cleveland in a Pinto or Mustang II carried a 6.75 Lbs. per cubic inch. So when this car pulled to the line, it weighed 125 lbs less than a Pinto at NHRA legal weight. The first NHRA National event the car competed in was the NHRA Summernationals held at Englishtown in July. The team unloaded and led qualifying on Friday with an 8.97/151.51. On Saturday, Gapp improved to 8.95/151.77, but the team fell back to second in qualifying behind Bob Glidden's pole-winning, 8.90/153. Gapp's 8.99 advanced over a fouling Reid Whisnant in the opening round of eliminations. Gapp slowed to 9.10/140.50 in round two, which was still enough to beat the Hornet of Wally Booth at 9.14/149. In the semifinal, a 9.04/151.00 took care of Roy Hill's 9.34/148. Gapp faced Larry Lombardo, who was driving for Bill Jenkins in his first national event in the final. Larry showed why Jenkins chose him, as Lombardo cut a great light and ran 9.11/150 for the victory over Wayne's quicker, but later 9.02/151.77. Still, the runner-up finish moved Gapp up to fourth in the NHRA points standings. The following week (July 21), Wayne won the second NHRA Division Five race held at Minnesota Dragways. The Maverick proved its worth by scoring another victory the very next weekend at York US 30 for the Super Stock Nationals. It was a twelve-car field, and in round one, his 8.94/152 defeated Bob Ingles. Sam Auxier fouled against him in the semifinals, and Gapp advanced with an 8.90/153. He got the "odd-lot" solo in the semifinal and ran 8.91/153. In the final, he went up against Zul's big-block Camaro. Richie's best run in eliminations had been 9.15. He knew he had to gamble, and he lost as he pulled a red light on the tree while Wayne ran 8.92/154.10 for the win. The winning wasn't about to stop there. On August 4, the team went to Canada for the NHRA Grandnationals. Gapp set a new NHRA ET record while qualifying #1 at 8.86/153.32. He backed up the 8.86 in the first round with an 8.87/150.75 while beating "Dyno Don" Nicholson's new '70 Mustang that debuted here to take advantage of the 6.45 weight break at 9.18/147. Bobby Yowell's 9.11 lost to the "Taxi's" 8.96 at a ridiculous 137.40 shutoff in round two. In the semifinal, Paul Blevins fouled away a 9.07 as Gapp ran 8.84 (Low ET) at 153.06. He faced Glidden's Pinto in the final. Gapp was not to be denied as his 8.90/145.39 scored the win over Bob's 9.01/153. It should be noted that during this time, the team still used the Pinto for match races, and the Mustang II was also still be used as Gapp drove it to victory at the third NHRA Division Five race at Wichita, Kansas, on August 10. With the win, Gapp moved ahead of Booth in the NHRA Pro Stock points chase. The next victory came at Martin, Michigan, for the PHR Championships. This was a sixteen-car field, and Gapp set Low ET and Top Speed while qualifying #1. An 8.96 in the opening round beat Mike Fons, and he got the "odd-lot" solo in round two, where his 8.93 advanced. In the semifinal, he faced Nicholson and Gapp won the battle of the 6.45 cars with an 8.97 defeating "Dyno's" 9.10. He raced against perhaps the toughest Mopar left on the NHRA circuit in the final, the Billy Stepp-owned, Bobby Yowell-driven Demon. But with the weight breaks being as they were at the time, the race wasn't really much of one as Gapp's 8.94/151.77 easily covered Yowell's 9.09/150. The Maverick was also used at the ill-fated PRO National Challenge race at New York National, where the car ran as fast as 8.68, but that was not NHRA legal. Only two cars qualified in the "eights" at Indy for the NHRA U.S. Nationals. The 32 car field was led by the "Taxi's" 8.95/153.06 (Low ET and Top Speed). Another 8.95/150.25 beat Joe Varde in the opening round. In the next round, Gapp's 8.96/150.50 took out Zul's 9.23/143. A strange thing happened in the third round. Wayne fouled against Herb McCandless, and even with the foul, the car only ran 9.31/152.54. Herb ran 9.00/149 for the win. That was a bitter pill to swallow, but Gapp came back to win the final NHRA Division Five race held at Denver to win the Division Five title with more than twice as many points as the second-place finisher. He ran the Mustang II there. He then jumped back into the Maverick on September 22 to win the IHRA US Open Championships held at Rockingham. His 9.02 qualified second to Nicholson's 8.94. Wayne beat Kenny Hahn in round one. He improved to 8.85/155.17 to beat Varde's Mustang II at 9.12 in the second round. In the semifinal, he ran an IHRA Record of 8.71 at 155.44 to beat Ronnie Sox's 9.03. The final was against McCandless, who he had lost to at Indy. The two had a close race, but Wayne's 8.85/154.10 won over Herb's 8.89/153 in the "Hauler." Gapp also won the IHRA All-American race at Bristol held at the end of September. This was an eight-car show, and once again, he qualified second behind Nicholson. In the opening round, an 8.89 dispatched Sox's 9.29. Whisnant's 9.11/149 in the semifinal was not good enough to stop the "Taxi's" 8.92/152.02. The two Fords of Nicholson and Gapp met for the final. Gapp set Low ET and Top Speed while winning with an 8.89/152.28 that just nipped "Dyno's" 8.90/151. | Four-door Maverick had a 100 lb. weight advantage due to its longer wheelbase. AKA Juana Taxi. Debuted in June 1974. Won IHRA All American Nationals at Bristol with an 8.99 at 152.28. Low qualifier and Low ET and Top Speed of the Meet at Indy 1974 at 8.95/153.06. Ran 8.95 at Englishtown, 8.84 at Sanair, 8.84 at Ontario.

Notes: Charlie was the first alternate at Gainesville at 9.035/149.75 but got into the show and lost to Dave Kanners in round one, despite improving, 8.86/154 to 8.97/150.00. At Columbus, Charlie qualified #7 at 8.950/151.00. He beat a fouling Bobby Marriott in round one with a 9.33/117. In round two, Charlie took out Roy Hill, 9.07/138.46 to 9.39/120. Charlie was unable to show against eventual winner Wally Booth in the semis. Charlie shocked the world at Indy, qualifying #3 at 8.716/149.50 and was reported to be running a big block Chevy in the Vega. Unfortunately, he fouled against Roy Hill in round one, and coasted to a disappointing 9.43/129 as Hill took the win despite breaking. Charlie also ran at least as quick as 8.89/149 in match race trim. We need his. best match race times (if they were quicker and faster than Charlie's legal times).

Notes: Bob built this 1970 Mustang to take advantage of a weight break for longer wheelbase machines. Set National Record at Pomona Winters at 8.772, then Gainesville at 8.76. The 156.25 was Top Speed of the meet at the Winters. Won Winters with a holeshot 8.79 over Wayne Gapp's 8.78. | After watching the success Gapp and Roush were having with their four-door Maverick, Bob had Don Hardy build him this '70 Mustang for '75. The Mustang was allowed to weigh less than the Pinto due to the NHRA weight breaks for long-wheelbase cars. The first time out for the car was at Beeline for the AHRA Winternationals. Bob set Low ET and Top Speed in qualifying #1 with an 8.96/153.84. He then beat Dick Landy in the first round, with an 8.97, followed by a solo 9.29 in round two when Don Nicholson shut off on the line. In the semifinals, a 9.02/150.50 took care of Kevin Rotty. In the final, he faced Wally Booth's Hornet. Booth was off by more than a tenth in eliminations, and it stayed that way in the final. Glidden's 8.99/152.28 beat Wally's 9.12/149. It was a great debut, but it was about to get better. Glidden and family towed to Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, where he qualified #2 with an 8.82/154.37 behind Wayne Gapp's "Taxi" at 8.81/154. These two would work their way to the final. Bob beat Pete Kost in the first round with an 8.772/156.25. The ET was a new NHRA record. In round two, he backed it up with an 8.781/153.32 over Nicholson's similar '70 Mustang. A semifinal 8.821/153.84 took out Dave Kanners' 8.90. The two long-wheelbase Fords came to the final, and Bob got a slight holeshot, and his 8.797/154.10 held on for the win over Gapp's 8.781/154. At the IHRA Winternationals, Glidden used his Pinto as IHRA did not have a different weight break for long or short-wheelbase cars. Glidden made it three event wins in a row for the new car when he won the NHRA Gatornationals. He set a new NHRA ET record of 8.760 in qualifying. His speed on the run was 154.63 (Top Speed). Gapp qualified #2, and these two again would work their way into the final. Bob beat Mike Fons' Mopar in the first round, with an 8.96, while a second round 8.86 advanced when Bobby Yowell fouled. In the semifinals, Larry Lombardo, driving Bill Jenkins' Vega, fouled away an 8.89/153, while Glidden sailed into the final with an 8.97/151.77. Bob got a great light in the final while Gapp was late, and Glidden got the victory with an 8.96/152.80 over the Maverick's quicker 8.89 at the same speed. During April, Glidden also debuted a new Mustang II. He had a lot of bad luck with the car and ended up crashing it at Columbus. He was OK, but the car was severely damaged. Because of this, Bob was at the NHRA Division 3 Opener at Indianapolis on April 20 with the '70 Mustang. He set Low ET in qualifying #1 with an 8.72. He also set Top Speed and won the event, beating Floyd Williams in the final. Bob ran the car at the NHRA Springnationals on June 8. He qualified #4 with a 9.02/150.25. Bob's 8.94/151.77 beat Lee Edwards' Camaro in the first round. In round two, he fell off to 9.34 and lost to Roy Hill's 9.13. He was alternating cars as he used a Mustang II at Bristol for the IHRA Springnationals, yet the following week (June 29), he was back in the '70 Mustang for the third NHRA Division 3 race at Edgewater. He set Low ET in qualifying #1 with an 8.86, and in round one, he also got Top Speed honors with an 8.88/153.58 drubbing of Charlie Reed's 9.18/145. A semifinal 8.90/150.25 beat Stacy Shields' Mustang II and moved Glidden into the final against Sam Gianino. Unfortunately for Bob, the car broke, and Gianino soloed for the win. It was hard to follow Glidden's cars in '75 as he then used the Mustang II at Union Grove for the IHRA Summernationals. I believe the last race Bob used the car at was the NHRA Summernationals at Englishtown. He blew up an engine during qualifying on Saturday but put a new one in and ran 8.99/153.06 to qualify #7. It was really surprising that he fouled away an 8.97/152.54 against Bert Straus in the opening round. Shortly after this, Bob sold the car to Larry Sengstack.

Notes: Yuill was at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, where his 8.73/157.06 qualified #9. That set up a first-round meeting with low qualifier Bob Glidden. Unfortunately, Mark's 8.83/154.63 fell to Glidden's 8.59/147 in his new Mopar. At Gainesville, his 8.73/157.06 (again) qualified #11 for the NHRA Gatornationals. In the opening round, his 8.76/153.06 upset Frank Iaconio's 8.83/146. In round two, Mark's 8.74/153.84 took out Wally Booth's lone AMC in the program. But he ran into Glidden again in the semifinal, and his 8.84/152.54 wasn't in the same ballpark as Bob's 8.48/150. Mark won the NHRA Division Six opener at Firebird Raceway on April 1. His final round 8.97/153.79 beat Mike Rendel's 9.11/147. He qualified #15 at Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals with an 8.83. In the opening round, he fouled away an 8.91/150.25 against Kevin Rotty. At the PHR Championships at Martin, Michigan, Mark qualified #4 with an 8.74/155.97 and lasted until the semifinals, where he ran another 8.74 but lost to Wally Booth's 8.70. He then went north to Canada for the NHRA Grandnationals, where he qualified #5 in the eight-car field with an 8.76/154.90. Unfortunately, he lost to low qualifier and eventual winner Bob Glidden in the first round. Upset Lee Shepherd with an 8.75 to 8.70 holeshot and made it to the semis at Indy. The best national event ET was 8.720 at Seattle (he ran 8.728/158.45 at Indy for his best national event speed). Formerly listed 8.64. Removed that time until we get confirmation.

Notes: Larry qualified on the "bump" at Indy for the NHRA U.S. Nationals with an 8.795/155.44. In the opening round, his 8.807/153.84 beat Sonny Bryant's 9.68/96. In the second round, he fouled away an 8.832/155.17 against Mark Yuill, who advanced with an 8.79/154. At Seattle, for the NHRA Fallnationals, he ran 8.73/155.17 to qualify #12. He improved to an 8.72/154.90 to beat Randy Humphrey's shut-off in round one, but his 8.84/153.58 in round two lost to Joe Satmary's 8.66/154. After running so well, it was surprising to see his name among the non-qualifiers at Ontario Motor Speedway for the NHRA World Finals (first alternate, times unknown but #16 was 8.88). Larry finished 18th in NHRA Pro Stock points. AKA Whirlwind.

Notes: Kinnett qualified on the "bump" at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals with an 8.74/153.06. In the opening round, his 8.77/155.17 beat alternate Lamar Walden's 8.92/151. In round two, his 8.87/152.80 fell to Don Campanello's 8.68/156. Jim was at DeSoto for the NHRA Division Two opener at the beginning of April. Only six cars showed, and his 8.93/152.02 in the first round beat Bill Robertson. In the semi-final, an 8.85/155.05 beat Wyman Barnett, who blew an engine. He faced "Dyno Don" Nicholson in the final, and despite running an 8.83/153.52, he finished runner-up to Don's 8.63/151. He was in Baton Rouge near the end of the month for the NHRA Cajun Nationals. Rain delayed the running of the race until May 2, and he fouled against eventual winner Bob Glidden in the first round. Kinnett had one of the four Mopar Pro Stockers to qualify at Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals. His 8.86 sat on the "bump" for the sixteen-car field. His 8.94/151.00 in the opening round advanced when Alban Gauthier fouled. But in round two, he fouled at 8.96/151.51 against "Dyno Don's" 8.82/152. He qualified #13 at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals with an 8.73, but he lost to Glidden in round two. Next came a runner-up finish to Lee Shepherd at the NHRA Division Four race at Baton Rouge. Kinnett also ran well at the final NHRA Division Three race held at Beech Bend. While he didn't reach the final, he set Top Speed at 155.17. In August, Jim was one of only three Pro Stock cars at Richmond Dragway for the NHRA Division Two race. He qualified #1 with an 8.72/153.84 (Low ET and Top Speed) and got the "odd-lot" solo in the first round. In the final, his 8.73/151.00 easily beat Morris Johnson's 9.43/123. At Indy, for the NHRA US Nationals, he was unfortunate as his 8.721/153.84 qualified #9. It was unfortunate as he had to race low qualifier Glidden in the opening round of eliminations. Glidden's 8.58/157 easily beat Jim's 8.77/153.38. The final NHRA Division Two race was held at Gainesville. Unfortunately, his late 8.79/151.00 in the first round lost to Johnson's 9.07/147. Jim ran 8.72 in the first round of the Summernationals to beat Don Campanello. We see an 8.720 on the results sheet, but that may be dropping the third digit. We are listing that 8.720 as his best for now, but otherwise, his 8.721 at Indy is Jim's quickest confirmed ET of the year. We need validation of the several 8.72s he ran in 1979. Former Vanke, Castaldo 1973 car reskinned as a Volare.

Notes: This Vega was conceived and built by Dave Smith of Ca. It did have a 3x2 frame as rules were changing rapidly when it was started. The front suspension was a Dave Smith created Don Edmunds torsion bar set up from a sprint car. The car really hooked up and won a lot of early races. - Jim Baker

Notes: Hill started the '79 season at Tucson for the AHRA Winternationals. He lasted until the semifinals before fouling against Kevin Rotty. Roy qualified on the "bump" at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals with an 8.80/156.79. In the first round, his 8.82/155.17 advanced when Tom Chelbana's Starfire broke. Ronnie Sox's Omni broke in round two, and Roy moved into the semifinals with an 8.80. Unfortunately, his Arrow broke in just off the line in his semifinal race with Joe Satmary. He failed to qualify at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationalsand at Columbus for the NHRA pringnationals where his 8.88 best was only good enough for the third alternate. Roy failed to qualify at Indy for the NHRA US Nationals. He blew an engine so badly during qualifying that the rods coming out of the engine actually damaged the frame. His 8.89/154.10 best was good for the sixth alternate.
