Notes: NHRA Division 7 racer. Photo from the 1979 NHRA US Nationals, Indianapolis Raceway Park. Larry finished 6th in NHRA points in 1980, his best year. | Larry qualified #5 at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals with an 8.60/156.24. Unfortunately, he lost to Gordie Rivera in the first round. At the Gatornationals, he qualified #9, a very unlucky spot as he faced low qualifier Bob Glidden in the opening round and lost. He made a stop at Warner Robins for the Division Two opener and cleaned the house. He ran 157.34 for Top Speed, set a new track record 8.58. In the final, he faced off against Roy Hill, and Hill must have known the advantage Johnson's Camaro had over his Horizon in performance as he fouled and Larry got the victory with an 8.60/156.79. The next NHRA National event was the Cajun Nationals at Baton Rouge. It was just an eight-car field, but Larry showed that he had what it takes to qualify. A strong 8.52 at only 152.28 qualified #4, but in round one, he was a little late of the line, and Bill Jenkins' 8.59/156 beat his 8.58/157.34. His disappointment didn't last long as a week later, he won the Division Six race at Seattle. An opening round 8.64/154.63 had beaten Terry Sherrill's 8.86/150, and in the semifinals, he soloed with an 8.92/120 when Gary Pugh's Monza broke. He faced the Mopar of Randy Humphrey in the final, and Larry's 8.69/154.90 grabbed the win over Randy's close 8.71/153. Two weeks later, he was at OCIR for the next Division Six race. He qualified #5 with an 8.65/155.44, but low qualifier, and eventual winner Kevin Rotty, beat his 8.69/155.97 in the first round, with an 8.55/157. Larry did not attend the Springnationals at Columbus, but he did run at the Mile High Nationals at Denver. The car broke in its first-round race against Rotty. He qualified in the top half(#6)of the field at Englishtown for the Summernationals with an 8.58/157.06 and another 8.58 at 155.70 beat Don Campanello's 8.85/154 in the opening frame. But in round two, Lee Shepherd's 8.50/162 put Johnson's 8.59/157.34 on the trailer. He qualified #1 with an 8.71 at Blaney Drag Strip for the Division Two final, but he failed to reach the finals. He also lost early at Bonneville for the Division Five race. Larry set a 9.07 track record in qualifying #1, but a sleepy 9.16/147.55 in the first round, lost to Russell Pierson's 9.21/147. He recouped with a win at the next Division Five race held at Brainerd. An 8.70/154.10 stopped Bill Prince's 9.07/149, and a semifinal 8.81/153.32 advanced when Pierson fouled. In the final, he faced John Hagen, and Larry's 8.68/155.17 held on for the victory over Hagen's 8.70/154. He did not race in Canada for the Grandnationals. |

Notes: Former Jenkins/Larson car. Miami FL 7/29/73 Richie Zul's car and transporter were stolen at the NHRA Summernationals. He rented Bill Jenkins' old '71 Camaro and stuffed his engine into it to keep his race commitments. It worked out quite well as he won over an eight-car field at Englishtown shortly after. He opened with a 9.57/126.76, and then in the semifinals, his solo 9.37/145.63 advanced when Frank Russo broke a water hose. He faced the Pinto of John Healy in the final, and Zul's 9.40/145.86 got the victory. At the Super Stock Magazine Nationals, he qualified #12 in the sixteen-car field with a 9.49/145.16, but he fouled against Melvin Yow in the opening round. On August 8, he competed at the USRT event at Englishtown. Ironically, he was substituting for Jenkins, who had his Vega stolen at St. Louis three days before this race. In the first round, Zul and Mike Fons, driving the "Motown Missile," had a close race that saw both drivers run 9.38 (Zul at 146.10). The Camaro got the "win" light. Zul's 9.41/146.34 was defeated in the second round by Wally Booth's 9.28/144. He then went to Maple Grove for an eight-car show where his 9.89/140.18 lost to Carl Ruth's 9.69/141 in the first round. Atco held an eight-car round-robin race later in the month, and Zul was there. Mike Fons fouled against him in his first race, and Richie eased it through with a 13.17/65.00. In the second race, Zul's 9.35/147.78 lost to Jenkins' 9.05/153. He was back at Englishtown in September for yet another eight-car show. Unfortunately, his 9.38/144.57 in the opening round lost to Scott Shafiroff's 9.37/144. The following week he was back at Englishtown for the NED Fallnationals. He ran 9.29/148.02 to qualify #3 in the eight-car show. In the first round, a great 9.26/148.51 beat Bob Judd's 9.88. |

Notes: Did Hubert run at Indy in a 1971 Mustang? Qualified #26 there at 9.943/138.24 and improved to a 9.85 in round one, to upset Bill Jenkins at 9.96. He lost in round two to Stu McDade, 9.55 to 9.89. Listing these times in this separate entry for a Mustang, but need to confirm. If we find that he ran his Maverick at Indy, combine those two entries. |

Notes: Rich qualiified #10 at the NHRA Summernationals at 9.723/139.53. He beat Joe Satmary in round one, 9.79/139.10 to 9.91/138. Ronnie Sox beat him in round two, however, 9.58/144 to 9.94/133. Rich qualified #2 at Sanair for the NHRA Grandnationals with a 9.630/140.00. He was still over two-tenths behind low qualifier Bill Jenkins at 9.41. But Rich fouled in the opening round, tossing away a 9.68/139.96 against Carmen Rotonda, who advanced with a 9.81/138. Shortly after that, he was at Maple Grove for an eight-car show. He qualified #1 with a 9.77 and then ran 9.68 (Low ET) at 139.75 to beat Al Joniec's 9.87/139 in the opening round. A semifinal 9.69/139.75 beat Richie Zul's 9.87/138 and moved him into the final against Ken Montgomery. The two had a good race, but the Vega was too strong, and Mirarcki won with a 9.69/140.18 over Ken's 9.78/140. Another victory came at the fourth NHRA Division 1 race held at Cayuga. There Rich's 9.67/141.06 in the final stopped Ray Allen's 9.73/139. Rich had a great US Nationals at Indy. He qualified #8 at 9.741/139.53. In round one, he beat Don Lorentzen, 9.80/139.75 to 10.16/134. He then took out Bobby Yowell, 9.74/139.53 to 9.82/141. In round three, he took the measure of Carmen Rotonda, 9.78/139.10 to an 11-second shut-off. And in the semis, he took an amazing win over Don Nicholson, 9.78/139.53 to 9.70/140. We need confirmation of whether this was a massive holeshot or if Don fouled. In the final, Rich finished runner-up to Ray Allen, 9.48/141 to 9.80/139.31. Rich was #6 of the Eastern Qualifiers at the Amarillo World Finals in October, hitting a 10.21 in the high altitude. He beat Shay Nichols in round one, 10.08/138.67 to 11.35/91. In round two, he lost a close one to Jim Hayter, 9.92/137 to 9.99/139.10. At Ontario, for the NHRA Supernationals, he was the second alternate with a 9.72. Rich also ran 9.69 at York this year. |

Notes: Former Billy Stepp car. | Carmen Rotonda qualified on the "bump" for the sixteen-car field at Beeline for the AHRA Winternationals with a 10.02. Unfortunately, he lost to Bill Bagshaw in the first round. He then went to Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals where on his info sheet, it was claimed that he was driving a Duster. He qualified #22 with 10.010 in the 32 car field and lost early in eliminations. |

Notes: Kevin ran at the AHRA Winternationals, but in the second round, Larry Lombardo ran a 9.05 that beat his 9.20. Larry lost a motor on the run and Kevin was reinstated. He didn't hang around long as in the semifinal Bob Glidden dropped a 9.02/150 on his 9.16/150.00 to finish his day for good. In May he ran at the Fremont Northern Nationals and made it all the way into the final before losing to Dick Landy's 8.90/154. Another runner-up finish came in June at the first NHRA Division 7 race at Sacramento. He ran 9.14/150.76 in the final that lost to Brad Yuill's 9.10/148. |

Notes: Bryant was at Beeline in January for the AHRA Winternationals, but he lost early in eliminations. He qualified #12 at NHRA Pomona at 9.093/150.75 but lost to Dave Kanners in round one, 8.920/153.32 to 9.099/151.26. Sonny was at OCIR for the AHRA Grand American West on March 16. He qualified #3 in the sixteen-car field with a 9.01 but fell off to 10.44 in the first round, and lost to Lee Hunter's 9.15. At the second NHRA Division Seven race held at Irwindale, he ran 9.03/151.51 to advance in round one. But in the semifinal, he and Kevin Rotty had a close race that saw them both run 9.30. Unfortunately, Rotty got the "win" light. Bryant did set Top Speed on the run at 152.28. Sonny won the PDA Championships at OCIR in late July 1975, running 8.94/151.51 to 9.06/150.75 over Gordie Rivera in the final. He had earlier set Low ET at 8.91. Sonny was the low qualifier at Bonneville WCS in August 1975 at 9.401. At the NHRA World Finals, Sonny qualified #10 at 9.021/151.00. He lost to Bill Jenkins in the first round, 9.380/149.00, to a shut-off 13-second pass. |

Notes: Third alternate at 1979 Winters at 8.82. After failing to qualify at Pomona, Booth really stepped it up at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals. His 8.66/156.79 qualified #7. An opening round 8.71/155.44 beat Tom Owens, but a slowing 9.22/113.78 lost to Mark Yuill's 8.74/153 in round two. At the rain postponed NHRA Cajun Nationals, he lasted until the semifinals, where his 8.81 lost to Lee Shepherd's 8.72. The next stop on the NHRA tour was at Columbus for the Springnationals. Booth's 8.77 qualified #10, and in round one, his 8.86/153.32 lost to Larry Lombardo's 8.76/155 in Bill Jenkins' Camaro. He did not compete at the Mile High Nationals, but he was at Englishtown for the Summernationals, where he qualified #4 with an 8.69. He improved to 8.65 in the first round, and he beat Joe Satmary, and an 8.72 in round two, beat fellow AMC campaigner Andy Mannarino's 8.75. In the semifinals, he lost to eventual winner Frank Iaconio. He ran really well at the PHR Championships held at Martin, Mich. There, he qualified #2 with an 8.71/152.28, and he ran steady 8.7's with an 8.70 best coming in the semifinal with a win over Mark Yuill's 8.74. He went up against Lombardo in the final, and Larry's 8.65/154 got the win over Wally's 8.71/154.63. Wally skipped the NHRA Grandnationals in Canada, but was at Indy for the US Nationals. He qualified #10 with an 8.72/153.58, but he lost to Iaconio in the opening round. He also did not attend the NHRA Fallnationals in Seattle. At the NHRA World Finals at Ontario Motor Speedway, he qualified #7 with an 8.76/153.84. A first-round 8.83/153.06 beat Gary Pugh, but he fouled (8.97/154.10) against Shepherd in round two. He finished fourteenth in NHRA points for '79. This was the last year that he campaigned as he retired from driving after the World Finals. |

Notes: The team debuted on the NHRA national event tour at Columbus at 8.75/155.70 to qualify #6. Andy fouled against Warren Johnson in round one, losing an 8.88/150 to 8.914/152.80 contest. He qualified #7 at Englishtown at 8.70/155.70. An 8.83/154.37 beat Ronnie Manchester's 8.90/152 in round one. Fellow AMC racer Wally Booth won their close round two contest, 8.72/155 to 8.75/155.17. He was credited with an 8.65 at the PHR Nats in Martin. We need confirmation of that ET and speed. Andy qualified #13 at Indy at 8.747/153.84. A first-round 8.888/152.54 beat Don Nicholson's fouling shut-off pass, but he ran into Bob Glidden in round two and lost an 8.56/157 to 8.779/154.10 contest. |

Notes: Outdated when retired. | Bill started the '70 season at Beeline for the AHRA Winternationals. He lasted until the semifinals before losing to Ronnie Sox. At the NHRA Winternationals he qualified #8 with a 10.26. In round two he lost to Dick Landy. A week later he was at OCIR for the US Pro Stock Championships. A first Round 10.13 beat Eddie Schartman's Cougar, but in lost to eventual winner Bill Jenkins. His next stop was at Fremont for the Northern Nationals. Eleven Pro Stock cars showed and he qualified #1 with a 10.23. Lambeck ran a best of 10.18 on his way to the final where he ran against Don Nicholson for the title. Don's SOHC powered Maverick had a little more in the final and took the victory with a Low ET of the meet 10.04/138 to Bagshaw's outdated Dart's 10.17/136.98. The following week (February 22), he was at Irwindale for a sixteen-car show. Bill qualified #3 and in the first round, he beat Jack Bayer with a 10.23/135.95. He got a solo in round two and ran 10.28/135.13. In the semifinals, he ran another 10.28/135.13, but he lost to Landy's 10.17/135. OCIR held an eight-car show on April 4 and Bill ran 10.09/136.36 in the first round, to beat Bayer who fouled. In the semifinals, Bagshaw fouled away a 10.77/137.19 that advanced Bob Spears to the final in Jim Rangers' Maverick. On May 17, he was runner-up to Landy at the Colorado Pro Stock Championships at Continental Divide Raceway. NHRA held its Division 7 race at Irwindale on May 23. Bagshaw won his first-round race with a 10.40/134.12, but in round two his 10.53/134.32 lost to eventual winner Darrell Droke's Maverick at 10.47/130. He was still driving the Dart at Dallas on June 14 for the NHRA Springnationals. He beat a fouling Ed Terry in the first round, with a 10.31, but in round two he lost to Jim Hayter's Camaro. On June 28, he won the NHRA Division 7 race at Fremont. He beat Butch Leal's Camaro in the final with a 10.20/139.10. The speed was a new NHRA national record. |

Notes: Won the Popular Hot Rodding meet at Martin, Mich., with a 10.16 to 10.08 holeshot over Dick Oldfield. Ran 10.11 at Edgewater. | Fons had one of the strongest Chevy Pro Stock cars in '70. Few Chevys could keep up with the domination of the Mopar Hemis in the first year of the class. Mike had one of them. At Beeline for the AHRA Winternationals, Mike beat the Camaros of Ray Sullins and Wally Booth in the first two rounds before meeting up with the Mopar of Dick Humbert. A 10.40 dispatched him and moved him into the final against Ronnie Sox. There was really no contest as Sox was about four tenths faster and in the final Fons' 10.54 finished far behind Ronnie's 10.08. Things got a little closer at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. There a 10.21 qualified #6 and he was now only two tenths behind Sox who qualified #1 with a 10.00. He lasted until round two before losing to the eventual winner Bill Jenkins in another Camaro. A week after the Winternationals, OCIR held its Pro Stock Championships. Unfortunately, Fons lost to Sox in the first round. His times continued to drop, but so did everyone else’s. At the NHRA Gatornationals, his 10.14 qualified #11 and he improved to 10.09 in the first round, but it wasn't enough to beat Don Carlton's 10.08. He was at Rockingham for the AHRA Pro-Am Championships where he beat Eddie Schartman in the first round, before losing to Dave Strickler's 10.05 in round two with a 10.31. | Best known NHRA speed 135.33. |
