Notes: Updated 1972 car. Received engine set back prior to the 1972 Supernationals. Yellow stripes added prior to the start of the 1973 season. First 150. Won IHRA All American Nationals at Bristol with a 9.14 at 150.00. 9.07 Rockingham "Dyno Don" had a great year in '73. It started with a big win at the AHRA Winternationals where he reset the AHRA Pro Stock record to 9.27. He qualified third and in the first round, a 9.41 beat Bill Bagshaw. In the second round, a 9.38 beat future star, Bob Glidden who missed a shift. In the semifinals, he beat Ronnie Sox with a 9.27. In the final, a 9.50/141.50 is all he needed for the win when Melvin Yow had troubles and slowed to 10.86. He then doubled up by winning the NHRA Winternationals as well. Don had run a 9.38/144.19 in qualifying for the 32 car field. In the first round, he ran 9.45/145 over Larry Breaux. He beat Butch Leal's 9.64/145 in round two with a 9.55/145.63. In round three, a 9.45/145.63 beat Dick Landy's 9.60/145. He got a single in the semifinal and ran 9.49/144.69. In the final, he set a new NHRA ET record of 9.33/145.16 in beating Don Carlton. He was gonna try and make it three Winter meets in a row when he showed up at Lakeland for the IHRA's version of the Winternationals. Nicholson qualified #4 with a 9.37 and made it to the semifinals before losing to Carlton's 9.17/141 with a 9.28/146.00. He kicked, butt at the Gatornationals, 'winning the race and resetting both ends of the NHRA record to 9.01/150.50. He had only qualified #6 with a 9.23, but he picked it up to a 9.05/149.25 in the first round, over Jerry Miller. The 9.01 (150.00) 'ET record came at the expense of Carlton who ran a 9.06 in the second round. In the semifinals, a 9.03/143.98 beat Mike Fons' 9.22. It was an all Ford Pinto final against Wayne Gapp. Don got a good light and ran a 9.04 at the record speed of 150.50 to beat Gapp's slightly quicker 9.03/149. He was runner-up to Reid Whisnant in April at Warner Robins. In May he was at Rockingham for the IHRA Pro-Am. He had been running countless match races and he showed up with the car running 50 lbs overweight and with two different cylinder heads. "Dyno" went out a laid down a 9.07 to qualify #3. Unfortunately, a first-round 9.35/141.50 lost to Roy Hill's 9.33/140. At the NHRA Springnationals at National Trail, he qualified #2 with a 9.32/145.16. He fouled away a potentially winning 9.52/142.63 against Gapp's 9.55 in the first round. At Bristol for IHRA's Springnationals, he used a 9.23 to qualify #2. Don made it into the final against Carlton, but he fouled running a 9.43/145 to Carlton's winning 9.25/147. At Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals, Don qualified #7 in the 32 car show with a 9.23. He lost early there. Then came the Super Stock Nationals. Once again Don 'qualified easily with a 9.28/147.54 taking the #5 position. In the first round, he picked up to a 9.14/148.27 to beat a fouling Al Joniec. In the second round, he got a big win when Bill Jenkins fouled away Low ET of the meet, an 8.98/150 while "Dyno" motored on for the win with a 9.15/148.51. In the semifinals, he beat Scott Shafiroff's 9.27/147 with a 9.18/148.76. He met Paul Blevins in the final and once again "Dyno" fouled. This time, he ran a 9.21/147.78 while Paul eased it through to a 9.77/109 for the win. Nicholson won a show at Connecticut in August. He beat Dave Strickler in the final. The NHRA tour went to Canada for the Grandnationals and Don was there. A 9.08 qualified #3 and in round one, he beat Bruce Larson with a 9.16/148.51. In round two, a 9.13/147.75 beat Bob Riffle. In the semifinal, he ran against Leal's Duster. A 9.15/147.78 by the little Pinto finished second best to Leal's 9.11/151. Don was overdue for another big win and it looked like everyone caught up to him in performance by mid-year. He ran well at the PHR Championships at Martin, setting Low ET in qualifying #1 with a 9.14. But in round one, he ran Leal and Leal's 9.20/149 beat his 9.25/147.78. At the end of August, Nicholson was at Tulsa for the National Challenge race. He qualified #6 with a 9.20/147.54 in the 32 car field. He beat alternate, Ken Higler in the first round, with an improved 9.09/149. In round two, he beat Joe Satmary's 9.41/148 with a 9.15/149. A third round 9.18/148 beat Yow's 9.24/141. But in the semifinals, he a Leal staged a close one with the Duster's 9.15/150 beating the Pinto's close 9.16/148.76. The following week (September 3), he traveled to Indy for the US Nationals. He qualified #7 with a 9.16/149.75. But in round one, he slowed to an off pace 9.47/139.75 that lost to Shafiroff's 9.37. Don ran at the Beech Bend NHRA Points race on September 8 and finished runner-up to Glidden. As the season was winding down, "Dyno" seemed to start getting his "Mo-Jo" back. At Rockingham for the IHRA US Open, he ran an 8.93/153.58 (Top Speed) in beating Hubert Platt. He broke in round two against Riffle. He then won the IHRA All-American at Bristol Don qualified #2 with a 9.03 and on his way to the final he beat Wally Booth, Strickler and in the semifinals, both he and Ronnie Sox ran 9.16's, but Don took the win. In the final, he ran a 9.14/150.00 (Top Speed) 'over Carlton's 9.16/149. He then bagged the next IHRA event, the Nationals at Lakeland. A 9.17 qualified #3 for the race and in the first round, he set a track ET record of 8.96 at 149.25 in beating Harold Clark. In the second round, he beat Shafiroff's 9.31/144 with a 9.09/148.02. In the semifinals, he and Gapp both went 9.09, but Don advanced. In the final, he raced Carlton (again) and a final run of 9.10/149.50 beat Carlton's 9.15/149. At Amarillo Dragway for the NHRA World Finals Don received an odd lot single in the first round, and ran 9.40/145.16. In the second round, he beat Royce Freeman with a 9.39/147.54. In the semifinals, it was "The Grump" against "Dyno" and this time Jenkins came out on top with a 9.34/145 beating Nicholson's 9.37/144.92. Don ended his legal weight season at the NHRA Supernationals. He ran a 9.21 to qualify #9, but he lost to low qualifier Gapp in the first round. Don last ran the Pinto at the 1974 NHRA Winternationals.

Notes: In '70 Sox ran 9.79 at Gators, 9.86 at Super Stock Nats, 9.93 at Indy, 9.95 at World Finals, and 10.23/136.18 to win AHRA Springs at Bristol. Low qualifier at NHRA Ontario 11/21/70 at 9.897/139.53. We need to confirm it was in the Cuda and not the Duster. | This team dominated the first two seasons of Pro Stock. Buddy Martin oversaw the booking and business end of the deal while Jake King was the engine builder. Ronnie Sox could handle a four-speed like no other. He was a great driver. The '70 season started with the team winning the AHRA Winternationals. Sox beat Don Grotheer, Ed Miller, and Bill Bagshaw to reach the final where his 10.08/137.61 beat the Camaro of Mike Fons for the title. At Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, Sox qualified #1 with a 10.00/139.10 and made his way into the final to meet Bill Jenkins. The white Camaro got the win with a 9.99/139 over Ronnie's 10.12/138.46. OCIR held its Pro Stock Championships the following week and Sox set Low ET in qualifying #1 with a 9.86. A 9.96 in round one, beat Fons, but he fouled against Wally Booth in round two. Jenkins and Sox would meet again in the final at the NHRA Gatornationals on February 15. They qualified one-two with Sox's Low ET and Top Speed of the meet 9.79/144.48 leading the way. A 9.94 in the first round, beat Dick Loehr's Maverick while another 9.94 in round two beat the team's future driver, Herb McCandless. In the semifinals, Sox faced off with Don Carlton driving a second Sox and Martin car. Ronnie ran 9.88 to advance to the final. The final saw Jenkins get out on Sox and his 9.90/138 beat the 'Cuda's quicker 9.84/138.88. The two had a best of five match race at Island Dragway on April 12 with Sox coming out on top. Ronnie won the first race with a 9.96/139.62 when Jenkins missed a shift, but Bill evened the score in the second race when his 9.94/140 beat Sox's 9.95/138.67. Ronnie then won the next two races and the match with times of 9.89/139 and 9.85/139. At the third AHRA Grand American race, the Pro-Am Championships at Rockingham, Sox set Low ET in the semifinals with a 9.82 while beating Jenkins. In the final, he faced the strong Ford of Don Nicholson. At this race Sox had the advantage and a final round 9.92/139.10 got him the victory over Don's 10.12/136. Another win came at the next AHRA race at Frontier International. A 10.29/136.57 qualified #1 and he soloed in the first round, when Grotheer was unable to run. In the second round, he only needed a 10.69 to advance and in the semifinals, he beat Jim Hayter's Camaro with a 10.31/136.77. Another Camaro faced him in the finals, this one was driven by Gary Kimball. Sox set Low ET with a final Round 10.25 for the win over Gary's 10.42. York US 30 hosted the Super Stock Nationals and Sox was a sure threat to win. Everyone thought that except for Wally Booth. Ronnie set Low ET and Top Speed in his semifinal win over Dave Lyall with 9.86/138.46 times. In the final he faced Booth. Booth's Camaro had been running 10.0's with a best of 9.97 so he was definitely the underdog. Every dog has his day and Wally got a good leave and his 10.00/136 held on to win over Sox's 9.95/138.03. After that, hiccup it was back to winning. On May 26 he won the AHRA Grandnationals at Detroit stopping Nicholson in the final. On June 7 he won the AHRA Springnationals at Bristol. There he qualified #2 with a 10.16 behind Dick Landy's 10.13. The two made their way into the final where Ronnie pulled a holeshot and his 10.23/136.45 held off Landy's quicker 10.21/135. A week later (June 14), he won the NHRA Springnationals at Dallas. He had set Low ET in qualifying #1 at 9.93. A first Round 10.01 beat Loehr while in round two he advanced easily. A third-round (32 car field)10.01 beat Nicholson and in the semifinals his 10.03 beat Lee Smith's 'Cuda. Once again, he met with Booth in the final. This time Sox got the win easy with a 10.03/136.77 when Wally blew the clutch out of his car. During this time, match races between Sox and Jenkins brought in the fans. Sox faced Jenkins at Maple Grove and won with a best of 9.80/137.61 and at Blaney, Sox won two straight with times of 10.06 (track record) at 137 and 10.10/137.19. On July 1, Capitol held a Pro Stock race and Sox finished runner-up to Nicholson. Early in July, Martin, Michigan's US 131 held a Pro Stock race. Both Sox and Jenkins attended. In eliminations, Sox opened with a 9.90 (Low ET) at 137.40 over Loehr. In the semifinals, his 10.00/137.40 beat Ron Hutter's Camaro. This put the two Pros in the final again. Unfortunately, Sox fouled while Bill got the victory with a 10.07/137. On July 12, Sox was at Indianapolis for the third NHRA Division 3 race. He got a bit of a surprise when Arlen Vanke beat him in the semifinals. A match race between Sox and Nicholson was held at Lakeland and "Dyno" won. Don's Maverick was getting stronger as the year progressed and it was reported that of all the cars facing Sox, "Dyno" was the one that beat him most often. It wasn't Nicholson who stopped him at the NHRA Summernationals. Ronnie qualified #2 with a 9.99/138.03, but in the first round, his 10.29/135.54 lost to Dick Humbert's 10.11/136 in Billy Stepp's car. It was Nicholson who kept Ronnie out of the winner's circle at Epping for the AHRA Grand American held there. "Dyno's" Maverick was the only car in the nines there and in the final, he beat Sox who had run a best of 10.06 with a 9.88/139. Nicholson may have stopped Sox at the next AHRA race at New York National as well, but after resetting both ends of the AHRA Pro Stock record (9.78/140.62), rain postponed the race and "Dyno" left. After the rainout, Sox won the race with ease. A final round 9.84/139.21 beat Carmen Rotonda's Camaro. At the NHRA US Nationals, a 9.93/138.03 qualified #3 in the 32 car field. Only four cars qualified in the nines and in the first round, his 9.99 beat Fon's 10.16. Unfortunately, in round two his transmission broke on his shift into third. This gave Ed Hedrick an easy 10.34 pass into round three. It was not all bad for the Sox and Martin team as their Duster driven by McCandless went on to win the race. Another match race against Jenkins was held at Phenix City. This was to be a best of five. Sox won the first race with a 10.15/136.36 over Bill's 10.32/134, but the Grump came back to win the second race with a 10.23/136 when Sox actually missed a shift and slowed to 11.33/86.33. Sox came back to win the next two races and the match with runs of 10.06/136.19 and 9.97/137.16, just missing Nicholson's track records of 9.97/140. "Dyno" and Sox had a good showing at Atco for NHRA's Division 1 final. Don had reset both ends of the NHRA Pro Stock record to 9.81/139.31 and he looked like he was going to be tough to beat. But in the final, the Maverick broke and Sox scored the win with 10.01/136.77 times. Another win came on October 15 at Dallas for the NHRA World Finals. The "Cuda qualified #2 with a 9.95 and Sox worked his way into the semifinals where his 10.03/136.77 beat Jim Hayter's strong Camaro. This set up a final with Vanke who also ran 10.03 in his semifinal win. It was a good race, but Sox's 10.00/136.36 beat Vanke's 10.06/137 for the title.

Notes: Won Beech Bend WCS over Bob Glidden on 8/22/76 at 8.783/153.32. Ran 8.65 at Seattle, 8.68/155.17 at Indy. | This was Wally Booth's dream season in the class. Except for the world championships, he was hard to beat. The cut and welded cylinder heads made the AMCs the cars to beat. Both Booth and AMC stablemate Dave Kanners had their best seasons. It’s funny because Wally was about to give up on his Hornet. He showed up at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals in a Vega. He qualified the car, but lost to Bob Glidden in the opening round. He returned to competition in the Hornet, but it wasn't until April before he got his first win. It came at the second NHRA Division 2 race at DeSoto. It wasn't long after that he was in the final at the NHRA Cajun Nationals at LaPlace Dragway. Booth set Low ET in qualifying with an 8.80, and he reached the final against Lee Shepherd. Wally must have been tired as, after taking a little snooze on the line, he decided to chase down Shepherd for the win. But his 8.88/153.32 was good for the runner-up spot as it wasn't enough to catch Lee, who won with a 9.07/151. He went to Detroit to run the AHRA Grandnationals and came away with another runner-up finish, losing to Ken Dondero in the final. It had been a long dry spell since he had won his last NHRA National event ('74 Gatornationals), but he finally won another at the NHRA Springnationals at National Trail. He qualified #1 with an 8.82 and improved to 8.77/154.63 in the first round, to beat Shepherd's 9.08. He had the lowest ET in round two as well when his 8.84/154.10 took out Richie Zul's 9.04/152. He was to face a surprisingly strong Charlie Reed in the semifinals, but Reed was unable to show, so Wally singled with an 8.78/154.37. He faced #2 qualifier Warren Johnson in the final, and Booth dished up an 8.74 (Low ET) at 154.63 to take the win over WJ's 8.81/156. At Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals, Booth’s 8.69 qualified #2. A first-round 8.76 beat Paul Blevins, and in round two, his 8.73 got around Glidden at 8.87. He ran into the "other" Hornet of Kanners in the semifinals, and Dave's 8.79/154 beat his quicker 8.77/152.80. Best NHRA national event times were 8.627/157.06 low qualifying effort at Sanair.

Notes: Dominated 1980 with 6 wins and 3 runner-ups. Lost the very close championship due to a broken transmission at the World Finals. Ran 8.35/163.45 at Amarillo WCS. Was that altitude factored? Confirmed 160.42 at Englishtown 80. We need to confirm the best sea-level times. | Lee started the '80 season by competing at the AHRA Winternationals. He qualified #1 in the eight-car show and went on to win, beating Don Nicholson in the final. At Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, Lee qualified #4 with an 8.52/156.24. He beat Jim Meyer in round one, and in round two, his 8.59/155.97 took out Lee Hunter's Zephyr. In the semifinals, his 8.61 advanced when Bob Glidden's Arrow broke at mid-track. His final-round opponent was to be Kevin Rotty, but Rotty's Camaro broke, so Shepherd soloed to his second NHRA National event Pro Stock win with a 14.38. Baton Rouge hosted the NHRA Division 4 Opener on March 9. Once again, the two Camaros of Rotty and Shepherd met in the final. This time Kevin's didn't break. Lee got the win with an 8.60/155.97 over Rotty's 8.63/154. At the NHRA Gatornationals, he qualified #2 with an 8.49/157.34. He beat Gordie Rivera in round one, and in round two, he beat Frank Iaconio. An 8.50 in the semifinals shut down Joe Satmary's 8.75. In the final, he faced Glidden and his Arrow. Both ran 8.51 (Lee at 156.52), with Shepherd getting the victory. The second Division 4 race was at Green Valley on March 30, and Shepherd set an 8.37 NHRA record in qualifying #1. His speed on the run was 161.57 (Top Speed). Once again, the final came down to the two Camaros of Rotty and Shepherd, and once again, the results were the same, with Lee's 8.42/156.52 beating Kevin's 8.58/157. The Reher-Morrison team continued to dominate Division 4 when they showed up at Houston for the third race. Lee ran 8.61 (Low ET) at 154.37 to qualify first and then went on to win with an 8.74/155.97 that beat Sonny Ray's 8.85/152. Things didn't seem to be going so good for the team when they showed up at Baton Rouge for the NHRA Cajun Nationals. It was an eight-car show, and when qualifying ended, Lee's best of 8.54/158.17 got the #5 spot. That put him up against low qualifier Glidden who had just switched to a Fairmont and set a track record 8.41. Lee was off by a tenth and a half, but he cut a good light in their first-round race, and his 8.54/158.73 beat Bob's quicker 8.49/160. In the semifinals, his 8.56/158.17 beat Rotty's 8.57/159. That set up a final round against Frank Iaconio. Frank had lane choice due to an 8.47 in his semifinal race. Once again, Shepherd proved he could drive as his 8.60/159.01 got the win over Iaconio's 8.55/145. This was his third straight NHRA National event victory.

Notes: Car used destroked big block which help the team in 82 when the 500 CID limit was enforced. After losing the 1980 NHRA World Championship in the last race of the season, the Reher-Morrison team was back in '81 to finish what they started. Driver Lee Shepherd started the season by qualifying #2 at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals with an 8.38/160.42 behind Bob Glidden's track record 8.33. Everyone expected a final round showdown between these two, but it wasn't to be. Lee improved to an 8.35/160.14 in the first round, to advance when Ray Allen, driving Bill Jenkins' Camaro fouled. But in round two, Shepherd fouled against Pat Musi. Glidden went on to win. At the NHRA Gatornationals, Shepherd once again qualified #2 with an 8.35/160.42 behind Glidden who reset the NHRA record to 8.31. Lee ran 8.41/159.01 and 8.46/159.29 to beat Allen and Mark Yuill in the first two rounds before coming up against Musi in the semifinals. Lee ran 8.48/57.06 and lost to Pat's 8.44/161. At least Lee got to see Glidden lose in the same round to Frank Iaconio. The next race was the NHRA Western Regional at Green Valley. It was an eight-car show and Glidden and Shepherd qualified one-two. This time Shepherd's 8.26/161.87 out-qualified Bob's 8.28. These two would meet in the final. Lee ran 8.30/163.63 in the first round, over Jim Basko's 8.51/161 and an 8.35/163.93 (Top Speed) beat Don Coonce in the semifinals. Bob had run 8.2's in eliminations and in the final Lee pushed the tree too hard to get an advantage and fouled. Both cars ran 8.31/163.04 so if he hadn't fouled it would have been close. Atlanta was the next stop for the team. Shepherd set Low ET in qualifying #1 with an 8.40/159.85. An 8.54 advanced in round one, when Dave Hutchens fouled and in the semifinals he met Glidden. This time it was Bob who fouled and Lee moved into the final with an 8.49/159.01. This time his final round opponent was Iaconio. Lee ran 8.48/159.29 to get the win over Frank's 8.55/157.

Notes: On June 6, Stuart won the NHRA Division Three race at National Trail. His final round, 10.00/137.82, beat Bob Riffle. The following week (June 13), he was at Dallas International for the NHRA Springnationals. An opening-round 9.88 beat Bob Lambeck's 10.13, and a second-round 9.82 put away Herb McCandless' 10.28. But in round three (32-car field), his 9.86 lost to Melvin Yow's 9.84. Although he failed to reach the final, he set Low ET in qualifying #1 with a 9.58 at Milan Dragway for the NHRA Division Three race. Shortly after that, he was at Salem for a best-of-three-match race against Arlen Vanke. In their first race, McDade's 9.95/141 beat the Duster's 10.09. In the second race, the Challenger went into a huge wheelstand that busted the oil pan and kept the car out of further competition. The team's next stop was at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals. A 9.61 qualified #3 in the 32-car field, and Start easily handled Dave Strickler in round one. But a blown clutch in round two lost the race to Vanke's 9.76. Stu was the runner-up at Indy Nationals, where the car ran a best of 9.55 (Low ET) on race day. Was #2 qualifier at 9.562/144.23 (Top Speed).; Photo: Hemmings Muscle Machines (Nov. 2007): p. 37 - MB

Notes: Herb qualified #6 at NHRA Columbus at 9.79 (speed unavailable). In round one, he lost a close one to Stu McDade, 10.02 to 10.05 (speeds unavailable). At Englishtown, the car really started to sing, and Herb went deep into eliminations, but he and the car became famous for a bumper dragging wheelstand when the wheelie bars broke. Herb qualified #3 at 9.570/143.54, behind Jenkins' dominant Vega and Ronnie Sox. Herb beat Sonny Bryant's Camaro in round one, 9.61/143.08 to 9.86/138. Round two saw him take out Melvin Yow, 9.57/143.54 to 9.76/137. He beat Don Carlton in round three, 9.59/143.54 to 9.69/143. He faced Bill Jenkins in the revolutionary Chevy Vega in the semis and lost 9.46/144 to 10.35/109 with the famous wheelstand. That was Herb's last NHRA national e event of the year. He was runner up to Jenkins at the Tulsa PRA race, where he ran a 9.424. Herb also ran 9.390 at Gateway.

Notes: Don was #5 qualifier at Indy 1971 at 9.691/141.06. AHRA record holder at 140.62 in January 1971. Ran 9.75 at York. | Nicholson continued to be Ford's strong hope in Pro Stock racing in '71, but as the season progressed other Ford drivers such as Wayne Gapp and Eddie Schartman also started cutting some numbers. Don started the year by winning the Lions AHRA Grand American in January with his "old" '70 Maverick. He qualified #2 with a 9.76 and a 9.83/139.96 (Top Speed) beat Bill Hielscher in the first round. Butch Leal was still driving his Camaro at this race and in round two he fell to Don's 9.81/139.81. In the semifinals, a 9.85/138.46 beat Don Grotheer's 'Cuda at 9.92/137. In the final, he came up against Bill Bagshaw in his "Red Light Bandit" Challenger. The two had a good race, but "Dyno's" 9.81/139.93 came out on top over Bill's 9.89/139. At Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, he debuted his new '71 car. Nicholson lost in round two to John Petrie. He did better the following week at OCIR's Pro Stock Championships. He ran a best of 9.76/141 in beating Don Carlton who was driving for Billy Stepp. Don was a little embarrassed when after doing a burnout, he backed into Don Grotheer's 'Cuda. The Maverick was fine, but the "Cuda's grill was bent up. He was runner-up for the second consecutive year when he faced Grotheer in the final. Grotheer got the last laugh as his 9.78/141 got the win when something broke in the Maverick's driveline. Don had some bad luck at AHRA's Winternationals at Beeline when he ran 10.12 in qualifying, but he broke a flywheel and was unable to run in eliminations. Nicholson had the only Ford that qualified at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals with a 9.82/142.18, but he lost to Arlen Vanke's 9.70/141 in the first round, with a fouling 9.88/138.88. A big win came at the Super Stock Nationals at York US 30. Twenty-eight-cars made the first-round and 'Dyno's" 9.85/141.28 advanced past round one. In round two, a 9.84/141.06 beat Bob Riffle in his new Demon while an odd-lot single in round three at 9.75/141.28 set Low ET of the meet. He had a close race against Mike Fons in the semifinals where his 9.83/141.06 prevailed over Mike's 9.87/138. In the final he came up against Bill Jenkins. It was rare not to see a Mopar in a Pro Stock final in '71 so this was great for the fans. Don got the win running a 9.76/141.06 over "Grumpy's" 9.97/139. He was at Greensboro on May 23 for a best of three match race against Ronnie Sox, but it was not his day as he lost three straight. That was better than what happened at Cornhusker where once again he faced Sox in a best of three, but on a losing 10.08/134.73 in the first round, he spun a main bearing on his "Cammer" and was done for the day. The next NHRA event was the Springnationals in June. It featured a 32 car field and Nicholson was the quickest non-Chrysler car in #7 with a 9.85. He picked up to a 9.83 in the first round, to drop Petrie and in round two, an improving 9.77 beat Ken Dondero's 9.96. This left Don's Ford stacked up against seven Mopars going into round three. Nicholson showed he could drive by slapping a slight holeshot on Fons and winning with a 9.82 over Mike's 9.81 in the "Rod Shop" car. Score was now Mopars 3, Ford 1. In the semifinals, Don chalked up another win, running 9.77 over Grotheer's 9.87. This put him in the final against Sox. It was another good race, but Don's 9.78/140.40 finished second best to Sox's 9.70/143. Cecil County held its All-American Pro Stock Championships soon after and Nicholson was strong. He ran a track record 9.52 in the first round, and a 9.53 in the semifinal put him into the final against Jenkins again. Once again Don got the win, running a 9.57 for the title. During this time, "Dyno" was running Match Races all over the country. This is where he made most of his income. He was at Great Meadows for a four-car show where he reset the track record to 9.65 at 141 in the first round, while beating Sox's 9.81/141. But in round two, more problems in the way of a blown engine kept him from making any more runs. Early in July, he faced off against Sox in a best of three at Atco. Sox won the match, but Don made it tough. Ronnie won the first race with a 9.49/144 over Don's 9.68/142.18. The Ford came back to take the second race with a 9.52/143.54 over Sox's 9.50/143, but a final run of 9.52/144 won the match for Sox when "Dyno" fouled away a 9.61/143.08. Just before the NHRA Summernationals, the Maverick was parked in Jenkins garage and Bill was helping Don adjust the carbs. It must have paid off as Don got Ford its first NHRA National event win. Don even thanked Bill in his after race thank you in National Dragster. The race was run at Englishtown and as per usual, Nicholson was the quickest non-Chrysler qualifier at #5 with a 9.66. He stayed consistent, running 9.68 in round one, over Ron Hutter, a 9.64 in round two over Jenkins' 9.86, and a big win in round three where his 9.66 beat low qualifier Don Carlton's 9.67 in a close one. In the semifinals, he slowed to 9.72/140, but it was still enough to beat Petrie's 9.77/141. In the final, he met up with Fons. Don got the victory with his best run of the event, a 9.63/141.73 over Mike's 9.68/142. Rumor had it that even Chrysler reps were happy with the Ford win as they were worried that NHRA would try to even the playing field for '72. Another final round showing came at the PHR Championships at Martin, Mich. He ran times of 9.77/140.62, 9.81/139.96, and 9.71/141.73 to make the final. But as good as these times were, he was about a tenth off of the "Mopar Missile's" times. So, in the final, he gambled on the tree and lost. Carlton went on to win with a 9.62/142. Nicholson won IHRA's Canadian-American race at Union Grove. In the final he faced another Ford, Ed Schartman's Comet. Don won with a 9.3 time over Ed's 9.8. Another win came on August 29 when he won the AHRA Grandnationals. There his final round victim was Joe Satmary who Don beat with a 9.77/141.73. He was disappointed at Indy for the NHRA US Nationals. His 9.69 qualified #5, but in the first round, he lost second gear and the race to Wally Booth. Shortly after this, American Motors was looking for drivers for their new Pro Stock program. A contract was offered to Nicholson, but he declined.

Notes: Glidden started the '73 season at Beeline Dragway in Arizona for the AHRA Winternationals. It was a sixteen-car field and Bob qualified #7 with a 9.40/146.10. He beat Lynn Harrison in the first round, with another 9.40 at 144.92, but in round two, he missed a shift while racing eventual winner Don Nicholson and slowed to 14.68/84.90. The NHRA Winternationals at Pomona featured a 32 car field and a 9.63/143.76 qualified Glidden #14. Began year in the red car that was an old Gapp & Roush machine and debuted a new Pinto with red, white & blue paint at the Columbus National Open with a win, setting a new track record at 9.05. Won Indy Nationals running a best of 9.033 number one qualifier and setting MPH record of 152.54. Also ran 9.02 at Beech Bend. Bob hit best times of 8.950/152.80 at NHRA Ontario, where he finished runner up to Wayne Gapp. The speed was a new national record. Sold to John Lingenfelter.

Notes: Also used a 340-inch engine. | Don's season started at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. Things didn't go so well. He made two sub-par passes with a best of 9.16. He and crew chief Jon Kaase changed engines and hoped for better results. Unfortunately, after waiting in line for six hours for one last qualifying attempt, the two of them watched as qualifying ended just two cars in front of them. It was a tough break. At the NHRA Gatornationals, Don qualified #5 with an 8.65/156.79. But in the process, he hurt his good engine. After changing engines, he ran 8.69/157 to beat Joe Satmary's 8.78/155 in round one, before losing to Bob Glidden's 8.59/151 in round two with an 8.73/154. At the NHRA Cajun Nationals, his 8.65 qualified #4 in the eight-car field. But in the opening round of eliminations, his off-pace 8.89/152.80 lost to Sonny Bryant's 8.74/155. On May 7th, he was at Englishtown for the NHRA Division One opener."Dyno's" 8.61 qualified #2 behind Richie Zul's 8.58. He really stepped it up in the first round, where his 8.52/157.61 beat Bernie Agaman's 8.73/157. But in the semifinal, his 8.60/157.34 lost to Frank Iaconio's 8.57/153.

Notes: The car that revolutionized Pro Stock racing. In addition to NHRA wins, won Bristol Springs at 9.56 at 143.31. Low qualifier, Low ET, Top Speed, and winner at Tulsa PRA race at 9.395/146.57. Then wrapped up with a win at World Finals at 9.340/148.02 (but had to holeshot Bob Glidden in the final 9.381 to 9.379). The 9.340/148.02 were Bill’s best NHRA national event times. He did run 149.00 at the IHRA Empire Nationals. NHRA record holder at 9.42/147.63. Ran 9.77 and won the NHRA World Finals at Amarillo. Ran 9.44 at NHRA Gatornationals, Gainesville. Ran 9.47 at Grandnationals. Won NHRA Winternationals in debut. Ran 9.37 at New England. | This car changed Pro Stock forever. Before this Vega was built, Pro Stock cars were built around stock cars with the frame that came with the car. Even Bill probably didn't realize how stout this combination was. It started out innocently enough when he showed up at Pomona for the Winternationals. He ran a 9.90 to qualify #17 in the 32 car field. There were 13 Mopars and 3 Fords that qualified ahead of him. In the first round, he faced low qualifier Stuart McDade in Billy Stepp's car. Jenkins had fooled around with the jets in the carburetors before eliminations. In the race with Stuart, Bill put the mighty Mopar on the trailer with a 9.63/142.18 to Stuart's 9.75/142. The Chevy fans were screaming. It had been almost two years since a Chevy had won an NHRA National event. In the second round, he beat Bill Bagshaw with a 9.62 and again the fans went wild cheering on the Vega. NHRA had a new superstar. The Mopar brass were not liking it. In round three, a 9.73/136.57 beat Melvin Yow. In the semifinals, Bill came up against Chrysler's in-house car, "The Mopar Missile," driven by Don Carlton. Jenkins' 9.68/140.18 thumped Carlton's 9.82/141. Chevy fans went nuts. Only one more Mopar to beat for the title. In the final, he ran Don Grotheer. Don ran a good 9.82/141, but Jenkins took the win with a 9.68/140.18. The Vega breezed through tech at the Gatornationals. It was said that Bill could have cut the roof off and run as a convertible and NHRA would've said OK because of the fans flocking to the races to see him run. The same tech guys flunked a Maverick for having Comet taillights. So, Bill rips off a 9.44/144.69 (Low ET & Top Speed) in qualifying #1. That was the quickest ever time in NHRA legal pro stock. As good as he was running, he wasn't even around for the semifinals. A first-round 9.62/141.95 beat Herb McCandless' 9.75/141, but in round two, the little Vega's tires broke loose and his 9.77/141.06 lost to Reid Whisnant's 9.63/140. Later in March, he faced off against Ronnie Sox at LaPlace. Jenkins lost the match, winning just the second race while Sox won the other two. Sox beat Jenkins again at the AHRA Pro-Am Championships at West Palm Beach. This time, Ronnie got him in the semifinals. Shortly after that, Bill was at Bluegrass Raceway for a best of three match against McDade. Jenkins won all three races with a best of 9.58/143.31. Near the end of April, he was at Englishtown for an eight-car show. It was rained out after the first-round, but Bill did beat Bobby Yowell with a 9.58/144.92 which was Low ET and Top Speed. He then went to Capitol Raceway for a USRT race. The cars were run under NHRA weights, but rosin was allowed. Jenkins ran 9.54 during qualifying and in the race for the first place honors, he beat Sox's 9.38/144 in the semifinals with a quick-leaving 9.42/146.10. He faced Dick Landy in the final and the Vega's 9.47/145.29 just nipped Landy's Challenger at 9.48/144. On May 28, he was at the New England National Open where he reset the NHRA Pro Stock record to 9.42. He won the race with a 9.50/143.08 in the final. At Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals, “Grumpy" qualified #1 with a 9.65. Carlton was close behind at 9.66. Only one Camaro (Bruce Walker) qualified in the field and Bill's 9.77/141 beat it in the first round. He set Low ET in round two where his 9.62/143.08 stopped Mike Fons' 9.77. The two Pro Stock kingpins, Jenkins and Sox, met in the semifinals. Bill’s 9.63/143.31 turned back Ronnie's 9.66/142. Once again, Bill faced Grotheer in a NHRA National event final, and once again, the results were the same. Bill’s 9.67/143.63 easily took the win over Don's 9.79/141. Jenkins didn't race at the IHRA events, but he made an exception to run at Bristol for the IHRA Springnationals. He qualified #1 with a 9.74, but Sox was breathing down his neck with his new Duster that qualified #2 also at 9.74. But Jenkins just got quicker during eliminations. An opening round 9.68/144.00 beat Reid Whisnant. In round two, his 9.68/141.50 advanced when Fons fouled against him. In the semifinal, McCandless' 9.77 lost to the Vega's 9.63/142.85. He faced Butch Leal in the final. Leal was a strong runner in Pro Stock competition in '72 and if it wasn't for Jenkins domination, Leal would have had the car to beat. Butch had gotten around a fouling Sox in the other semifinal race. But Leal's times were at least a tenth off of Jenkins’ pace here and it showed in the final, where Bill set Low ET with a 9.56/143.31 to win over Leal's 9.75/141. In July, Bill was at York US 30 for another USRT race. He ran 9.51/143.76 to qualify for first place honors. But in the semifinal race between him and Sox, Bill got beat. Ronnie’s 9.40/145 beat the Vega's 9.43/142.40. Seeing Bill lose as '72 went on was rare. Another victory came over a 32 car field at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals. Bill qualified #1 with a 9.50/144.46. He dropped that a tenth in the first round, where his 9.40/144.69 (Low ET and Top Speed) beat Wally Booth's new Gremlin at 9.82. A round two 9.52/137 beat Whisnant's 9.72 and in round three, his 9.41/144.69 beat Fons' 9.50/144. He had two more Mopars he go. In the semifinals, McCandless went into a huge wheelstand while Bill advanced with a 9.46/144.46 and in the final, he was up against Landy. Dick lost a wheel on his Challenger and Jenkins ran 9.48/144.23 for yet another win. No other car at Englishtown had run a 9.4; the closest was Fons' 9.50. Bill had had so much fun at Bristol that he decided to run another IHRA race. So, he won the Empire Nationals on July 23. He was really running well. His 9.43/148.54 qualified #1. A first-round 9.37/146.34 stopped Arlen Vanke and in the semifinals, his 9.44/148.27 beat Carlton. It was another good-old Sox vs. Jenkins final. But there was no stopping the "Grump" on this day as his 9.38/149.00 claimed the victory over Sox's 9.42/146. He lost to McCandless in the final of the USRT race at Englishtown early in August, but that was a minor setback as he went to Canada for the NHRA Grandnationals and dominated that event. His low qualifying 9.41/146 was over two tenths quicker than the second qualifier. After an easy first-round win, he beat Booth in round two with a 9.42/144.23. A semifinal 9.47/143.31 stopped Ron Hutter's similar Vega at 9.68/139. Larry Breaux was his final round victim and Larry fouled so Jenkins got the victory with a 9.47. No other car at the race was able to run below 9.63.

Notes: Frank won the 1979 NHRA Fallnationals on an 8.49/157.06 to 8.47 holeshot over Bob Glidden in the quickest Pro Stock race ever at the time. - CompetitionPlus. Also, it ran 160.14. | This is the year that Frank Iaconio broke out as the quickest of the Chevy Pro Stock contingent. He didn't run at Pomona, but at the NHRA Gatornationals, he qualified #3 with an 8.58/157.34. Unfortunately, he lost to Mark Yuill's 8.76/153 in the first round, with an off-pace 8.83/146.10. He then won the NHRA Division 1 race at Englishtown, stopping Larry Lombardo in the final. Frank also didn't run at Baton Rouge for the NHRA Cajun Nationals. He qualified #3 again at the NHRA Springnationals with an 8.68/155.70, and he beat Ronnie Sox with an 8.77/153.84, and an 8.79/154.10 in round two beat Kevin Rotty before fouling away an 8.84/150.25 against eventual winner Bob Glidden's 8.66/157 in the semifinals. Another NHRA Division 1 race win came on June 24 at Maryland International. Once again, he faced Lombardo in the final, and Frank's 8.64/154.63 got a close victory over Lombardo's 8.65/156. He skipped going to Denver for the NHRA Mile High Nationals. On July 8, Iaconio went to Suffolk for the NHRA Division 2 race and came away with another win, stopping "Dyno" Don Nicholson in the final. The following week (July 15), things went really well for Frank at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals. He picked up his second career NHRA Pro Stock title. He qualified #2 behind Glidden, and these two would work their way to the final. Frank started by beating Sox with an 8.62. His 8.58 took out Lee Shepherd in round two, and a semifinal 8.61 beat Wally Booth. He had Bob concerned enough in the final that Bob fouled, and Iaconio ran 8.60/156.52 for the victory. Nicholson stopped Iaconio in the final at Maryland International's US Pro Stock Open, but Frank was strong there, running low 8.7's. He then traveled up to Canada for the NHRA Grandnationals. It was an eight-car show, and his 8.57/157.34 qualified #2 behind that Arrow from Whiteland, Indiana. It would come down to another final round showdown between these two. Frank had run 8.60 and 8.48 to beat Ronnie Manchester and Lombardo to reach the final. Glidden had lane choice with an 8.46 in his semifinal win. Frank ran a good 8.53, but it wasn't enough as Glidden won with an 8.47. He took some comfort by winning the fourth NHRA Division One race at Maple Grove shortly after that. He beat surprise finalist Larry Sengstack. He also won the final Division One race held in New England. There he also set Low ET and Top Speed at 8.64/155.97. His next stop was at Indy for the NHRA US Nationals. Frank's 8.58/160.42 (Top Speed) qualified second behind Glidden's 8.58/158. In the opening round of eliminations, he beat Booth. But in round two, he was upset by Lombardo. Larry's 8.67 beat his slightly quicker 8.66. That was a tough loss for Iaconio. He made up for it at Seattle for the NHRA Fallnationals. Once again, he qualified #2 with his 8.48/157.89 following Bob's 8.46/159. A first-round 8.54/151.00 stopped Lee Hunter, and in the second round, his 8.52/156.79 beat Lee Shepherd's 8.64/155. In the semifinals, he quickened his pace to 8.48/157.06 to put Joe Satmary's 8.68/154 Camaro on the trailer. Glidden had run just a tick quicker in his semifinal race, an 8.47/157. So the final was close. And was it ever! Frank got out ever so slightly on the Mopar, and his 8.49/157.06 held on for the victory over Bob's closing in 8.47/158.

Notes: AKA the Juana Taxi. Four-door long-wheelbase car had 100 lb. weight advantage. Ran 8.78 at Winters after qualifying #1 at 8.81. Lost final round to a Glidden holeshot, 8.79 to Wayne's 8.78. Ran 8.94/153.06 at IHRA Bristol June 1975. Was that in this car or the Mustang II? Won Indy 1975 over Zul in this car. | Gapp continued to run his trick four-door Maverick into '75. The season started at Beeline for the AHRA Winternationals in January Gapp's 8.97 qualified #2 behind Bob Glidden's 8.96. Unfortunately, Wayne fouled in the first round, against Joe Satmary. At Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, an 8.81/154.37 qualified #1, just in front of Glidden's 8.82. These two would work their way to the finals. In early Sunday morning time trials, Wayne improved to 8.79. No one else was able to run 8.7's that morning as the closest was Glidden's 8.81. Gapp's first-round 8.81/154.63 beat Larry Huff's Mopar at 9.16/148. A second-round 8.89/154.37 took out Wally Booth's 8.98/152 and in the semifinals, he almost lost with clutch problems. His opponent, Bill Jenkins, helped out by fouling. This put the two long-wheelbase Fords in the final. It was as close as it could get as Gapp's 8.78/154.37 lost by inches to Bob's slower 8.79/154. These same two would qualify one-two at the NHRA Gatornationals with Glidden's 8.76 leading Gapp's 8.76/153.84. Once again, they would meet in the final. Gapp beat Kenny Hahn in the first round, with an 8.88/152.54 and in round two his 8.87 advanced when Reid Whisnant fouled. He slowed to 8.91/153 in the semifinals, but it was still enough to beat Dave Kanners' AMC at 8.95/151. Once again, the two long-wheelbase cars squared off. And again, the results were the same. They both ran 152.80, but Glidden was sharp on the lights and his 8.96 beat Gapp's quicker 8.89. The NHRA Division 4 Opener was held at LaPlace and the "Taxi" dominated the event. Gapp qualified #1 with an 8.95 (Low ET) and ran 8.98 twice to reach the final. Kelly Chadwick was his final round opponent and a 9.06/150 got the victory over Chadwick's 9.23/146. In match races and at the IHRA Winternationals, the Gapp and Roush team used a Pinto, but at the IHRA World Nationals at Amarillo in April, Gapp was in the Maverick. He set Low ET and Top Speed and in the final, he faced Don Nicholson. Gapp ran an 8.76 to get the victory over "Dyno's" 8.85. The Pinto was used for the next couple of IHRA events before Gapp was back behind the wheel at the NHRA Springnationals. He set Low ET of the meet in qualifying #1 with an 8.94/151.51. (For a change, Glidden was not second; Kanners’ Hornet was at 8.99). Mike Fons fouled against him in the first round, and Wayne advanced with a 9.01/151.00. In the second round, Warren Johnson got a great light and his 9.13/149 held on to win over the Maverick's quicker 9.10/149.25. The car’s next outing was at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals. Gapp qualified #1 with an 8.89/152.28 and then ran 8.96/152.62 to beat Roy Hill's 8.99/152 in the first round. A second-round 9.03/150.00 beat the Pontiac Astre of Bert Straus at 9.18/151. In the semifinals, he picked up the pace to an 8.84/153.32 over Kanners. That put him into the final against Jenkins. Gapp capped off the weekend by setting Low ET with an 8.80 at 154.63 to win over Jenkins' 8.93/154. Another win came at the NHRA Grandnationals in Canada. Again, Gapp was low in qualifying with an 8.98. His times kept improving with an 8.94/153.06 in the first round, to trailer Sam Gianino. He ran a solo in round two and recorded an 8.93/149.53. Richie Zul fouled against him in the semifinals and Gapp set Low ET with an 8.86/150.00. He faced Kanners in the final and an 8.91/152.28 got him the victory over Kanners' 9.00/151. On August 16, Gapp was driving the Maverick at Maryland International for the fourth NHRA Division 1 race. He beat Booth in the final with an 8.90/147.05 to the AMC's 8.97/149. At the PHR Championships, Gapp wasn't one of the top two qualifiers. He was back in the #4 spot with an 8.89. This was unusual, but what was even more unusual was his first-round race against Larry Ford. Gapp ran 8.97/151.51 and lost to Larry's 9.25/144! That was more than a little snooze on the line. But that trailed the Maverick in the first round. Gapp made up for it at Indy for the NHRA US Nationals. He qualified #3 with an 8.85, and he made his way to the semifinals of the 32 car field where he faced a strong running Booth. Booth had reset the NHRA Pro Stock record to 8.75 in qualifying #1. Wally must have been a little nervous facing Gapp, and he fouled away an 8.80 while Wayne motored into the final with an 8.87. In the final, he ran Zul's big-block Camaro. Zul ran 8.95/151, but Gapp took the victory with an 8.83/153.32. At this point in the season, the points chase seemed to be between Gapp and Booth. Shortly after Indy, the final NHRA Division 3 race was held at Bowling Green Kentucky. Gapp qualified #1 and made it to the final against Glidden. Any time these two ran, it was bound to be close and this was no exemption. Gapp's 8.91/153.58 finished runner-up to Bob's 8.90/154. The following week, NHRA was at Seattle for the Fallnationals. The end of the season was starting to look like it had in the beginning, with Glidden and Gapp qualifying one-two. Gapp's 8.748/154.90 qualified behind Bob's new NHRA record 8.72. Of course, these two would meet in the final. Mardy Maltais fouled against Gapp in the first round, and a 9.99/104.04 advanced into round two. This was not so easy as the Maverick lost an engine on the run and the team swapped in another one for round two. There, Gapp's 8.83/153.06 beat Lee Hunter's 9.01/151. In the semifinals, Huff fouled against him and an 8.90-51.77 moved into the final. Bob was starting to eat his way back into the points race and his final 8.84/155 beat Wayne's close 8.85/153.06.

Notes: Won 75 IHRA All American Nationals at Bristol. Also 8.83 at Ontario 75. Low qualifier at Indy 1975 at 8.752/152.54. | Booth's season started at Beeline for the AHRA Winternationals. He ran 9.18 in the first round, over Rich Simone's Mustang II and in round two, a 9.17 beat Joe Satmary's 9.27. A 9.11/149.50 wasn't needed in the semifinals when Larry Huff fouled, but it put Booth in the final against Bob Glidden who had debuted his new '70 Mustang. Wally tried hard with a 9.12/149.25, but was still left behind Glidden's 8.99/152. At Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, Booth qualified #5 with an 8.92/151.77. He lasted until the second round before losing to Wayne Gapp's 8.89/154 with an 8.98/152.28. The next NHRA event was the Gatornationals held on March 16. Wally didn't qualify very well as his 8.98 put him in the #11 spot. This set up a first-round meeting with Larry Lombardo that the Hornet lost. During this, Dick Arons was working hard on the cylinder heads, lopping off and sectioning the heads for more power and as the season progressed the results were showing. In April, Wally won the NHRA Division 2 Opener at Warner Robins. He qualified #1 with an 8.95 and went into the final against Reid Whisnant where his 9.05/149.50 beat Reid's 9.06/152. In May he was at Dragway 42 for the AHRA Grandnationals. He qualified #6 in the eight-car show and got around Huff in the first round, before fouling away a 9.03 in the semifinal against Satmary's 9.15. At the NHRA Springnationals, a 9.06/149.00 qualified #7. In the first round, a 9.11/149.25 beat Satmary's 9.19/147. In round two, a 9.09/149.75 lost to Bill Jenkins' 9.03/150. At Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals, he qualified #11 with a 9.07. A first-round 9.06/149.75 lost to the "other" Hornet driver, Dave Kanners, who ran 9.02/150. Wally won the AHRA Drag Nationals at Kansas City on August 3. He beat Fred Shafer's Vega in the first round, with a 9.09 and another 9.09 in the semifinals beat Floyd Williams. In the final, he met Warren Johnson and the Hornet's 9.08/148.51 got the win over the Camaro's 9.13/149. Maryland International hosted the fourth NHRA Division 1 race on August 16, and Wally made it into the final where his 8.97/149.75 finished second best to Gapp's 8.90/147. The following week (August 24), he was at Martin, Michigan, for the PHR Championships. He qualified #6 with an 8.95 and improved to a first-round 8.92 over Paul Davis. Unfortunately, he fouled in round two against Shafer. Booth showed that the cylinder head work was paying off as he set a new NHRA record in qualifying #1 at the US Nationals with an 8.75. He lasted until the semifinals where he fouled away an 8.80 against eventual winner Gapp's 8.87. He then went to Rockingham for the IHRA US Open and proved that his times were no fluke. He qualified #1 with an 8.86 and a first-round 8.85/153.32 beat Charlie Castaldo. In round two, an 8.82/154.10 beat Fred Turner. In the semifinals, he kept the pressure on with another 8.82/153.32 over a fouling Scott Shafiroff. In the final, he was to have faced Lee Edwards' Camaro, but Lee had broken a timing chain in his semifinal run so Booth got to make a solo for the win. What a solo it was, as he ran Low ET and Top Speed with an 8.81/154.37 for the title. It was a strong showing for the little Hornet. At the NHRA Division 2 final at DeSoto Speedway, Wally set Low ET at 8.97, but in the final he decided to take a little nap and his 9.00/150.50 lost to Johnny Dowey's 9.24/145. At the NHRA World Finals, he qualified #3 with an 8.83/152.80, but he lost in the first round.

Notes: 1978 photo. | This was the calm before the storm. The Reher-Morrison team ran well in '79, but nothing forecast just how well they would do in '80. Driver Lee Shepherd started the season by qualifying #2 at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals with an 8.61/157.34. An opening round 8.65/155.97 advanced over a fouling Gordie Rivera, but in round two the Camaro broke and slowed to 9.03 in a loss to Joe Satmary. At the NHRA Gatornationals, Lee's 8.62/156.25 qualified #4. But the team was unable to show for the first-round race against Don Campanello. Shepherd won the NHRA Division 4 race at LaPlace, stopping Shelby Jester in the final. At the rain-delayed NHRA Cajun Nationals, Lee qualified #3 in the eight-car field, and he got a solo run in the first round. In the semifinals, he beat Wally Booth's 8.81 AMC effort with an 8.72/154. This put Shepherd into the finals against Bob Glidden (a forecast of the next two seasons). Shepherd tried hard with an 8.71/155.44, but few could keep up with Glidden in '79 and Bob's 8.56 at a shutting off,149 got the victory. The team then stopped off at St. Louis on June 3 for the AHRA Gateway Nationals. Lee reset both ends of the AHRA record during qualifying with an 8.59/159.30. He then ran 8.65 and 8.73 to reach the final. His final round opponent was Bobby Marriott and Lee's 8.69 defeated Marriott's 8.86 for the victory. A week later (June 10), they were at Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals. An 8.71/154.63 qualified #5. In round one Shepherd's 8.85/152.02 beat Campanello's 8.87/153, but in round two an 8.82/153.06 was no match for eventual winner Glidden's 8.66/152. Alamo Dragway was the next stop for the AHRA Nationals. The team dominated. Lee qualified #1 with an 8.65/156.80, and he set Low ET and Top Speed to the final with an 8.61/159.56 that beat Marriott's 8.71. They did not go to Denver for the NHRA Mile High Nationals. Shepherd was disappointed when the Camaro broke in the final against Mike Oppen at the Amarillo Division 4 race.

Notes: Gapp was runner up at the Pomona Winters in the four-door Maverick, but he debuted his new Pinto at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals and ran it for the remainder of the 1976 NHRA tour. He qualified #5 with an 8.812/153.32. He was late off the line in the opening round, and his 8.92/152.28 lost to Shelby Jester's 8.94/151. He was at Rockingham in the first week of April for the IHRA Pro-Am Championships. He reached the final against Bob Glidden. The two Pintos in the final may have looked alike, but they didn't run the same as Glidden's 8.41/160 got the victory over Gapp's 8.55/158. Gapp was also runner-up to Glidden at the next IHRA race, the World Nationals held at Amarillo. In the first round, he ran 8.69/157.31 over Jester's 8.85/152. He got the "odd-lot" solo in the semi-final and ran 8.70/156. He slowed to 8.86/145.78 in the final, which was not good enough to beat Glidden's 8.76/157. With the NHRA rules being as they were (heavily factored against the Fords), the team did not race at LaPlace for the NHRA Cajun Nationals, which ran the same weekend as the IHRA event. In May, Gapp also competed in Atlanta for the IHRA Dixie Nationals but failed to reach the finals. The team qualified 10th at the NHRA Springnationals, running 9.051/150.75. In round one, Wayne lost to Warren Johnson, 8.81/154 to 9.14/149.75. He qualified at IHRA Bristol Spring 76 at 8.89/152.80. The two Pinto's of Gapp and Glidden reached the final for the IHRA Springnationals title. Once again, Glidden walked off with the trophy, running 8.68/154 to win over Gapp's 8.71/155. These two would also make up the final at Union Grove early in July for the IHRA Summernationals. This time, the roles were reversed as Gapp's 8.65/158.17 scored a much-deserved victory. They decided to go to Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals and were surprised as their 8.729/156.25 qualified #3. Gapp beat Tom Michalek in round one, 8.925/153.84 to 9.26/149, but lost to Richie Zul in round two on a holeshot, 8.88/152 to Wayne's 8.853/153.32. The E-Town qualifying times were Wayne's best NHRA national event times. Gapp and Roush were at Maryland International for the U.S. P/S Championships shortly after that. Unfortunately, Gapp lost to Warren Johnson in round one. The team did not go to Canada to race at the NHRA Grandnationals. In mid-August, Gapp was at Martin, Michigan, for the PHR Championships. His 8.79/153.82 qualified second to Wally Booth's 8.75. Only eleven cars showed, so Wayne ran 8.84 in round two after an easy first-round win over Pat Ulik. But a late 8.83/153.32 in the semi-final lost to Joe Satmary's 8.85/152. He had one of only two Fords to qualify at Indy (Lee Hunter was the other) for the NHRA U.S. Nationals. An 8.838/152.80 gave him the #11 spot in the field. Both Fords lost in the opening round. Gapp's 8.849/153.32 went down to eventual winner Booth's 8.75/154.

Notes: The team purchased the car from Rick Brantley unfinished. Early in May, he was at LaPlace Dragway for the NHRA Cajun Nationals. A career-best (to this point) 8.90/151.51 qualified #3 in the eight-car field. An opening round 9.15 beat Mickey Mills, but in the semifinals, his 9.12/149.25 lost to Wally Booth's 8.83/153. Shortly after that (May 16), he was at El Paso for the NHRA Division Four race. His 9.53/142.63 qualified #5 and gave him the honor of racing low qualifier Lee Shepherd in the first round. It didn't go so well as his 9.68/140.40 lost to Shepherd's 9.51/144. Bobby qualified #15 at the NHRA Springnationals with a 9.19. He fouled in the first round against Charlie Reed. Weight Break car. Notes: Also ran 8.969 at Gainesville Raceway. | This team was tough. Given more time, they would have been major contenders. But Jon Kaase was hired away by "Dyno Don" Nicholson at the end of the year and Don went on to become the '77 NHRA Pro Stock World Champion. Ford's 8.96 at the NHRA Gatornationals qualified #14. In the opening round of eliminations, his 8.99/150.00 lost to Roy Hill's 8.80/155. The team was at Miami-Hollywood for the IHRA Winternationals but the car broke against Bob Glidden in the first round. Larry Ford drove the Pinto to Low ET at Bristol for the IHRA All-American Nationals in September with an 8.65. He made it into the final only to lose to Bob Glidden.

Notes: Lyall managed to push a production Boss 429 engine, with the modifications allowed in Pro Stock, into the 9.90s; First 9-second pro stock pass, Bristol, TN, April 1969 - a 9.98. Dave Lyall ran a 9.96-second ET with the car in Super Stockrntrim at the AHRA Springnationals in 1969, impressive when you consider slower time was used to win the first-everrnNHRA Pro Stock event a year later. The photo shows Dave racing Bill Jenkins at Bristol. Also ran 133.93 at Bristol in June 1969. Where was the 134.77 run? 10.28 York. Dave ran this car until he wrecked it in '71. AHRA's Super Stock class at the time for a forerunner to Pro Stock. He continued to run this car into '70, as well as another Boss 429 car that he bought from Ford. He paid just $1.00 for each car. Custom Speed Enterprises paid Dave $2,500 a year to have their name on the side of the car.

Notes: Swept both IHRA races at Bristol in 76. Won Springs with an 8.68 at 154.63, then won the All Americans at Bristol with an 8.65 at 156.25. Set National Record at 156.25 at NHRA Gators. Ran 155.44 at NHRA Pomona Winters. | Bob was not happy with the NHRA's Pro Stock weight breaks for '76. The 351 powered Fords were carrying a lot more weight compared to the '75 season. More weight meant more breakage of parts. Glidden started the season at the Phoenix Winter Classic on January 25. He qualified #2 with an 8.90 and lasted until the second round before losing to Wayne Gapp's four-door Maverick. At Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, these two would meet again only this time in the final. Bob qualified #3 with an 8.80 and he beat Wally Booth and Roy Hill in the first two rounds. In the semifinals, he came up against low-qualifier Bill Jenkins. Bob got a bit of luck when Jenkins fouled away an 8.77/153 while Glidden advanced with an 8.86/155.70. Gapp and Glidden met in their ninth NHRA final. Glidden got his ninth NHRA National event victory with an 8.82/155.70 beating Wayne's 8.91/153. At the NHRA Gatornationals, an 8.78 qualified #3. He scored an easy first-round win and then beat Lee Edwards in the second round with an 8.87/154.63. In the semifinals, he met Jenkins' Monza again, only this time it was Larry Lombardo behind the wheel. Bob tried hard, but his 8.83 was no match for the Monza's 8.74. He did leave with a new NHRA speed record of 156.52. At the NHRA Springnationals, he qualified #4 and in the first round, his 8.89/152.28 beat Shelby Jester in Andy White's Monza. An 8.92/152.02 beat Bob Ingles' 9.12/147 in round two while another 8.92 at 153 lost to Warren Johnson's 8.83/153 in the semifinals. While Bob wasn't happy with the NHRA side of things he was dominating on the IHRA circuit. The NHRA tour was at Englishtown for the Summernationals in July. Glidden's 8.77 qualified #7. He made it into the second round where his 8.87 lost to Wally Booth's 8.73. Best NHRA ET was 8.772 at the Summers.

Notes: First IHRA 8-second run. Ran 9.05/148.27 at Indy. Won Springnationals at Columbus. Ran 9.25 at 147.29 to win IHRA Bristol Springs. Early low qualifier at Gatornationals at 9.22- 148.51. Also ran 9.04 at Muncie. | Carlton started the season by qualifying the "Mopar Missile" first with a 9.22 (Low ET) at 148.51 at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. In the first round, he beat Barrie Poole's 9.96 Pinto with a 9.70. In round two, Carlton got the odd-lot single and eased it through with a 10.20. In the third round (32 car field), he beat Bob Lambeck with a 9.50/145. In the semifinals, Don picked up the pace to a 9.34/147.78 to beat Jack Roush's Pinto and to earn the right to face Don Nicholson in the final. Nicholson got the win in the final with a 9.33. Carlton bypassed many smaller meets, skipping the OCIR All-Pro events and the Bakersfield March Meet, and he didn't run any AHRA events either (except the National Challenge race) in '73. Instead, he concentrated on the NHRA and IHRA events. The "Missile" team was at Lakeland for the IHRA Winternationals on March 3 and came away with a big win. Carlton qualified #2 with a 9.29/148.50 (Top Speed) behind Mike Fons' 9.25. He easily got past the first-round and then ran 9.25 at only 132 to beat Reid Whisnant's 9.41/144 in round two. In the semifinals, he set Low ET with a 9.17 at 141.50 to beat Nicholson's 9.28/146. In the final, he faced off against old foe Ronnie Sox in an all-Duster final. Carlton got the win running a 9.19/141.00 to win over Sox's 9.29/146. The next event the team raced at was the NHRA Gatornationals. Don qualified #2 with a 9.12/150, a tenth behind low qualifier Wayne Gapp's 9.02/149. Carlton beat Rufus Boyd in the first round, with a 9.22, but in round two, despite running a great 9.06 at an early shutting off 139.75, he lost to Nicholson's Low ET and Top Speed of the meet run of 9.01/150. Carlton completely dominated the IHRA Longhorn Nationals at Dallas on April 29. He qualified #1 while resetting both ends of the IHRA Pro Stock record to 9.10/150.50. He then racked up times of 9.20, 9.13, and 9.12 to make the final, where he beat Bob Riffle in the "Rod Shop" Demon with another 9.10. 1973 was turning out to be the year of the Ford's with the 351 powered Pinto's winning everything, but Carlton proved that the Mopars could still run. On May 6, he again reset the IHRA Pro Stock record, this time down to 8.98 while winning the IHRA Pro-Am Championships at Rockingham. He ran 8.98 at 149.75 while qualifying #1. The car was promptly weighed and found to be 25 lbs overweight. He ran 9.02/151.77 in the first round, over Oscar Roberts' 9.36/146. In round two, a 9.04/149.50 advanced when Stuart McDade fouled. He dipped back into the eights in the semifinals with an 8.99/149.00, beating a fouling Ronnie Lyles at 9.22. In the final, he ran Dick Landy, who had run 152 mph here. Don took the win with another eight-second time, an 8.98/150.00 over Landy's 9.09/149. That was Don's third straight IHRA event win. He got his fourth win at the next race, the IHRA Northern Nationals at Muncie for the IHRA Northern Nationals on May 20. He qualified #1 with a 9.24 (Sox was second way back at 9.35); Carlton worked his way to the semifinals, where he set Low ET with a 9.04 at 152.28 to beat Dave Strickler's 9.35/145. In the final, a 9.06/151.00 beat Don Grotheer's 9.47/145. He was starting to look unbeatable on the IHRA trail. Then the "Mopar Missile" pulled into Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals. They were expected to run well, but nobody expected them to win as easily as they did. Don set Low ET of the meet in qualifying #1 with a 9.32/147.54. In the first round, he beat Jack Roush's 9.50/145 with a 9.46/145.86. In round two, he dumped the "Grump," Bill Jenkins with a 9.45/146.81 over Bill's 9.48/145. In the semifinals, Carlton stepped up to a 9.38/147.78 over Melvin Yow's off pace 11.65. In the final, he met up with another Mopar that was wreaking havoc on the troops, Butch Leal, in his Duster. The all-Mopar final ended early when Leal fouled away a 9.44/146 while Carlton won with a 9.40/147.78. The "Mopar Missile" won for the fifth straight time on the IHRA circuit at Bristol for the Springnationals. The competition was getting closer as Don only qualified #3 with a 9.26 behind Leal (9.22) and Nicholson (9.23). But in eliminations, Carlton was strong. He ran 9.28 in the first two rounds to beat Eddie Ratliff and Strickler. In the semifinals, he beat Sox, who had taken out Leal the round before. In the finals, it was Carlton against the Pinto of Nicholson. The "Dyno Man" couldn't wait and fouled away a 9.43/145 while Carlton motored to a 9.25/147.29 for the victory. Don showed up at Milan Dragway for the NHRA Division 3 race and set Low ET and Top Speed before losing to Gapp in the final. At Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals, Carlton was one of almost 50 Pro Stock cars trying to make the 32 car field. He qualified #6 with a 9.21 and only lasted until the second round, where Sox's 9.19/147 beat his 9.28/147.78. Carlton didn't make the trip up to Canada for the NHRA Grandnationals in August. He did run at the PHR Championships at Martin, Michigan. Don lasted until the semifinals of the sixteen-car show, where his 9.18/147.78 lost to eventual winner Leal's 9.15/150. The "Mopar Missile" made its only AHRA showing of the year on August 26 for the National Challenge race at Tulsa. Don qualified #6 with a 9.18/148.76 in the 32 car field. He beat Raymond Martin in the first round, and in round two, a 9.19/148 beat Sonny Bryant's Big-Block Camaro at a distant 9.45/145. In the third round, he beat Mike Fons' 9.29/146 with a 9.20/149. Unfortunately, the car broke in the semifinal, giving eventual winner Jenkins a single into the final. A week later, he was at Indy for the NHRA US Nationals. It was another 32 car show, and Carlton ran 9.24/149.00 to qualify #14. A first-round 9.23 beat Sam Gianino's 9.33, but in the second round, both he and Melvin Yow ran 9.05 (Don at 148.20), with Yow winning in Billy Stepp's Dodge. Carlton was shooting for his sixth straight IHRA victory when he rolled into Bristol for the All-American Championships on September 16. He qualified #7 with a 9.20, and in round one, he beat Hubert Platt. In round two, he picked up to a 9.15 to beat Dave Kanners' 9.44/144, and in the semifinals, he advanced when Yow lost an engine. Once again, he faced Nicholson in a final round. It was a good race, but "Dyno" stopped Carlton's streak of wins with a 9.14/150, beating the "Missile's" 9.16/149.00. He made it into another IHRA final at Rockingham for the US Open in October. This time he faced Wayne Gapp, and Wayne ran an impressive 8.85 to win over Carlton's 9.12/151.

Notes: First Pro Stock with struts built by SRD. | From mid-'73 until the NHRA rulebook caught up to them at the end of the '75 season, the Ford's owned Pro Stock competition. A lot of finals saw just two blue oval cars racing for the title. Chevy lovers had this man to root for. Jenkins was by far the strongest Chevy campaigner during this time. The '75 season was no different. He showed up at Pomona running a dry sump oiling system. In qualifying, his 8.84/154.90 was #3 behind the Fords of Wayne Gapp and Bob Glidden. Bill’s opening round 8.87/155.44 beat alternate Mickey Mills' 9.25/145 and he ran 8.80/155.44 (again) in round two to beat Scott Shafiroff who had just switched from a Chevy to a Ford. Jenkins' speed was a new NHRA record. He faced yet another Ford in the semifinals, this time it was low qualifier, Gapp’s new four-door Maverick. Bill must have been a little concerned about the car as he fouled against him. As it turned out, Wayne had clutch problems on the run and Jenkins probably would have won. It was also probably because of his light at Pomona that he let Larry Lombardo drive his car at the NHRA Gatornationals. Larry qualified third behind the same two Fords and ironically, he fouled against Glidden in the semifinals. Bill was back behind the wheel for a best of three match race against Gapp at Cayuga. Things didn't go his way as he lost three straight with a best of 8.89/152.02. At the NHRA Springnationals, of course, Bill qualified #3 with a 9.01/150.75, but this time only Gapp's Ford was ahead of him. Dave Kanners slipped his Hornet into the #2 spot. Bill started eliminations with a 9.04/151.00 over Charlie Reed while a second round 9.03/150.50 beat Wally Booth's 9.09/149. In the semifinals, his 9.01 beat future superstar Warren Johnson's 9.08 and moved him into the final against Roy Hill. Jenkins was the favorite as Hill qualified #16 and was at least a tenth off the pace and it showed in the final where the "Grump's" 8.98/152.28 got the victory over Hill's 9.16/149. Jenkins moved up a spot in qualifying at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals. His 8.92/152.02 was second to Gapp's 8.89/152. These two would meet in the final. Bill started by running an 8.97/152.80 over Larry Huff's 9.15. A round two 8.92/154.63 beat Johnson's 9.11/149 and in the semifinals his 8.94/152.54 advanced when Shafiroff's Mustang II broke. Bill tried really hard in the final as he must have left a dent in the floorboard by the gas pedal. His 8.93/154.90 (Top Speed) lost to Gapp's 8.80/154.63. He was at Maryland soon after that, for the US Pro Stock Open. Bill set Low ET in the first round, with an 8.83 that beat Pat Musi. But in round two the car broke while beating Bob Ingles and he was unable to return for the semifinal. He expected his new Monza to be ready for the NHRA Grandnationals and he had sold both his Vegas. Unfortunately, the Monza was not done and Jenkins had to skip the Grandnationals as he had no car to race. The new Monza debuted in time for the PHR Championships later in August.
