Notes: The Gapp and Roush team was running really well in '73, and the two thought that having two cars on the track might be the right thing to do. Jack Roush got behind the wheel of one of their Pintos and took it to Indianapolis for the NHRA Division Three opener. He qualified #6 in the eight-car field with a 9.57, and in the first round, he ran an even better 9.39/145.86 (Top Speed), but he was late off the line and lost to Rich Maskin's 9.41/142. The team took both cars to Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals. Roush did well during qualifying, running 9.45 for the #9 spot in the sixteen-car field, and he even out qualified Wayne Gapp, who got the #10 spot with a 9.48. But in the first round, Roush's 9.50/145.63 lost to eventual winner Don Carlton's 9.46/145. Gapp did better lasting until the semifinals. They took both cars to Milan for the third NHRA Division Three race. Roush qualified #5 and got to race low qualifier Don Carlton in the first round. Jack pushed the tree a little too hard and fouled. Gapp got revenge by winning the race and stopping Carlton in the final. Both also qualified at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals. Jack put his Pinto on the pole with a 9.13/148.02, but in the first round, the Pinto broke a rear end, and Bobby Yowell advanced. The team then split with Gapp going to Canada for the NHRA Grandnationals while Roush went to York for the Super Stock Nationals. Jack's 9.18/151.26 (Top Speed) qualified #3 for the sixteen-car show, and an opening-round 9.15/150.00 beat Frank Iaconio. But in the second round, Jack got off the line behind Scott Shafiroff, and his 9.35/148.76 failed to catch Scott's 9.37/145. His driving career was halted at St. Louis. There he qualified #4 with a 9.15. A 9.12 in the first round, beat Royce Freeman, and in round two, Jack beat a fouling Joe Satmary with a strong 9.04/150. He improved to 9.02/150 in the semifinals while beating Gary Kimball, but the car got loose and rolled several times at the top end of the track. It was destroyed, and Roush was taken to the hospital with a broken arm.

Notes: Probably too quick for Dave in 1975. Verify the ET for the year. Also-145 is way too slow for an 8.78. One of the first two Mustang IIs built by Don Ness. Bob Glidden got the other one, but never raced it and sold it. (Bob did race the former Lou Oleynik Hauler car, but that was not the Don Ness car). 9.73 133.53 at NHRA Indianapolis IN 8/31/75.

Notes: Nicholson almost ended up driving an AMC in'72. American Motors was interested in going Pro Stock racing, and "Dyno" was their first choice. The deal had been done. Don's last request had been that he wanted a new Lincoln for his wife to drive, as Ford would surely take the one away they had provided. AMC granted his request, but before the deal was finalized, he told them that he couldn't forsake his Ford fans and drive a Nash. "Dyno Don" continued to run his SOHC-powered Maverick early in '72. Shortly after the NHRA Winternationals, he had Ken Dondero take over the driving duties of the Maverick. He hoped that the Pinto would take over where his Cammer left off. The Pinto was about 200 lbs. lighter than the Maverick, and that was important as the 351 Cleveland was making about 575 hp, which was a hundred less than the SOHC. The car was built at M&S Welding. They had also built both of his previous Mavericks. He debuted the car at the NHRA Gatornationals, where it was awarded "best-engineered car" but failed to qualify. It was interesting that the Maverick qualified #2 with a 9.46/144. Nicholson was working hard to get the 351 sorted out for competition. He went through many engines before finally restricting the oil from the top end of the motor so that the bearings lived. On May 9, he was at Green Valley Raceway for the AHRA Nationals. He only qualified #4, but in the opening round, he set Low ET with a 9.84. In round two, he hurt the motor and slowed to a 10.20 loss to Dave Atkins' 10.03. He continued to flog the car, and at Bristol in June for the IHRA Springnationals, he qualified #14. It wasn't great, but 32 cars were trying to make the sixteen-car field. An opening round 10.11 lost to Stuart McDade's 9.92. He was absent from both the NHRA Springnationals and the Summernationals. Late in July, he was in Milan for a four-car show. In Don's first race, his 9.85 lost to McDade's 9.58. In his second race, "Dyno's" holeshot-aided 9.62 beat Wally Booth's 9.57. In his third race, the Pinto broke just off the line against Wayne Gapp. Things were slowly starting to click early in August. He was runner-up to Herb McCandless at St. Louis for the AHRA Gateway Nationals. As mentioned, he was at Dragway 42 on August 20 for the IHRA Summernationals. His 9.50 qualified #2 behind Sox's 9.46. These two would eventually meet in the final." Dyno's" opening round 9.55/148.02 beat Rich Maskin's 9.71/140, and a 9.72/140.84 beat Dondero's team car in round two. He had a close race against Reid Weisnant that saw Don's 9.57/146.51 beat the Mopar driver's 9.57/147. He ran Sox in the final, and his 9.70/139.31 finished runner-up to Sox's 9.42/149. He then went to National Trail for the USRT's final race, where he beat Bill "Grumpy" Jenkins in the final. He had run as quick as 9.50/143.31 there. Near the end of August, the car was really starting to pick up. He was at Edgewater for an eight-car show, and he beat Don Grotheer in the first round, before beating Jenkins in round two with an incredible 9.40. He faced Sox in the final again, and this time his late 9.51 lost to Ronnie's 9.58. At Indy, for the NHRA US Nationals, he "only" qualified #18 in the 32 car field with a 9.84/138.03. He picked up two tenths in the first round, where his 9.65/141.28 beat number two qualifier Dave Strickler's similar 9.65/141. A second-round 9.68 took out Joe Satmary's big block Camaro at 9.78, and in the semifinals, he stopped the Camaro of Bruce Walker with a 9.72/140.40. Bruce ran 9.82 in the loss. He slept on the line in the semifinals, and his 9.70 lost to Rich Mirarcki's 9.78. Nicholson won the AHRA Grand American final held at Fremont on October 8. Dick Landy broke in the final, and Don ran 9.56/143.70 for the win. He was at OCIR on November 15 for a big Pro Stock event. It was not one of his better days, as, during a burnout, the car got out of shape and hit the guardrail. He barely got the car fixed in time for qualifying on Saturday, November 18, for the NHRA Supernationals held at Ontario Motor Speedway. He attempted to make a run, and the car broke on the line. On Sunday, he had one chance left to make the field, but the transmission broke, and "Dyno" failed to get a run in to qualify for the field. It was a sad way to end his '72 season, but great things were in store for him as he entered the '73 season. Also ran 9.652/141.28 and a semifinal finish at Indy 1972 and a DNQ at the World Finals. Ran a 9.70/139.31 runner-up finish to Ronnie Sox at IHRA Dragway 42 in August 1972. Reportedly ran 9.45 at IHRA Martin, MI.

Notes: Did this car go 8.97 at legal weight? Is the 155 legit at legal weight? | Mike was at Beeline Dragway for the AHRA Winternationals. He qualified #10 in the sixteen-car field with a 9.57/145.16 and in the opening round of eliminations his 9.58/142.63 lost to Wayne Gapp's 9.35/142. At Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, his 9.55/146.34 qualified #11 in the 32 car field. A first-round 9.56/144 beat Corky Booze, but he was unable to return for his second round race against Dick Landy. Fons qualified #1 at Lakeland for the IHRA Winternationals with a 9.25, and he got the "odd-lot" solo in the first round. But in round two, he was late off the line and his 9.48/146.10 lost to Don Grotheer's 9.50/145. At the NHRA Gatornationals, he ran 9.30 to qualify #8. In the opening round his 9.37 beat Ken Van Cleave. In round two he improved to 9.18 over Paul Blevins' ailing Vega, but in the semifinals, his 9.22 fell to eventual winner Don Nicholson's 9.03.

Won final event of the year in 1972 over Larry Huff at OCIR All Pro Series on 12/31/72 with a 9.41/145.86. | Leal was tough to beat in '72. Although he didn't win any NHRA National events, he won everywhere else. He started the season by winning the OCIR All-Pro Opener. On the way to the final, he reset the track mph record to 146.10. A 9.56/144.65 in the final beat Bob Lambeck. He followed that up by winning the AHRA Winternationals at Beeline. There, he qualified #2 with a 9.62 just behind Don Nicholson's 9.60. "Dyno's" Maverick went out in the first round, with no oil pressure and Leal took over as the favorite. A first-round 9.61 beat Barrie Poole and in round two, he took out Reid Whisnant with a 9.57 (Low ET). He soloed in the semifinals and in the final, he was up against Bill Bagshaw. A 9.66/143.08 got the victory over Bagshaw's 9.75/141. At the second OCIR All-Pro race, he set Low ET and Top Speed in the final while beating John Petrie with a 9.58/144.00. On January 28, he was at Lions for the Grand Premiere race. His 9.54 qualified #1 and held for Low ET. Once again, he reached the final. There he ran Nicholson. Leal was late and Don left on time, recording a 9.59/142 for the win while Butch's 9.57/143.54 got him the runner-up spot. He then went to Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. It was a 32 car field and Leal qualified #2. He set Low ET and Top Speed in the second round with a 9.58/144.69 over Mike Fons. But in round three, he lost oil pressure and shut off, giving Arlen Vanke a solo into the semifinals. The following week (February 13), he was back at OCIR for the third All-Pro race. He set Low ET of the meet in qualifying #1 with a 9.58. Steady 9.7s in eliminations got him another win. A first-round 9.71 beat Lambeck while a semifinal 9.70/143.76 beat Bagshaw's 9.75/141. His final round opponent was Dick Landy. The two had a close race with Leal's 9.71/142.85 getting the win over Landy's 9.73/140. This was a pretty impressive track record considering it was only February. The winning continued in March when he won the Las Vegas National Open. He set Low ET and Top Speed as well. A final round 9.94 beat Don Lorentzen's Camaro. Then Butch went to Famoso for the Bakersfield March Meet. Of course, he won again. In the semifinals, his track record 9.69 at 142.40 (Top Speed) beat Landy. In the final, Lambeck fouled against him and Leal won with a 9.72/141.95. His next stop was at Fremont for the AHRA Northern Nationals. He qualified #3 in the sixteen-car field with a 9.56, but he got quicker as the race progressed. A first-round 9.44/146.34 (Top Speed) beat Bob Anderson while in round two, a 9.60/141.73 took out Henry Ponzo. He had a tough race in the semifinals against Ken Dondero driving "Dyno's" Cammer-powered Maverick. Leal set Low ET with a track record 9.40/146.10 to beat Dondero's hard-charging 9.46/145. After that, you would think he would go on and win over Lambeck in the final. Not so, Leal fouled and Bob went on to win with a 9.52/142. He was at Gainesville the following week (March 19), for the NHRA Gatornationals. Butch qualified an uncharacteristic #7 in the sixteen-car show with a 9.64. Even more uncharacteristic was his first-round loss to Melvin Yow when he missed a shift and slowed to 14.59. The final OCIR All-Pro race was run on March 25 and Leal set Low ET in qualifying #1 with a 9.64. But once again, he missed a shift, this time in the semifinals against Ken Van Cleave. Even with the loss, Leal had racked up enough points to win the OCIR All-Pro Pro Stock championship. He was runner-up to Bagshaw at the NHRA Division 7 Opener at Irwindale. Won the last race of 1972 over Larry Huff at OCIR on 12/31/72 with a 9.41/145.86 in the 1972 car.

Notes: Photo from the 1974 NHRA Gatornationals, Gainesville, Florida. This car had a very short lifespan. Don Hardy built the car which used quick-release body panels. The Gapp and Roush built engine used Brooks rods and pistons, a General Kinetics cam, and twin Holley Dominators on an Edelbrock tunnel ram manifold. The heads, of course, were also done by Gapp and Roush. The rear end was a Ford 9" with 5.67 gears. | The "Gapp and Roush" team debuted their new Mustang II at the NHRA Gatornationals in March. Jack Roush drove it while Wayne Gapp drove the team's Pinto. As shown in the picture, he had the rear window blow out at speed on its first run. They grabbed a replacement off a rent-a-car! Jack then went out and qualified the car #2 with a 9.03/152.28 behind Gapp's 8.99/152 in the Pinto. Both survived the first-round with Jack's 8.94/153.06 beating Paul Blevins' 9.01. Gapp hurt his motor in his first-round win over Bob Glidden and was unable to run in round two. Roush had to carry the "Gapp and Roush" banner himself in round two and his 8.97/152.51 won over Scott Shafiroff's 9.08/149. He beat his third straight Vega driver in the semifinals where his 8.95/152.80 put Frank Iaconio's 9.05/152 on the trailer. This put Jack into the final against Wally Booth and his AMC Hornet. Jack made his worst run of eliminations, a 9.01/152.54 that finished runner-up to Booth's 8.97/152.

Notes: Fast Eddie had his Boss 429 Maverick running some stout times in '72. Wayne qualified #15 at the NHRA Winternationals with 9.890 but lost to Don Carlton in round two. At the Gatornationals in March, a tube-framed Vega made it through tech, but Eddie's car had Comet tail lights, so it flunked tech and was forced to run B/Gas. He ran a 9.60 best and finished runner-up in Modified Eliminator. In May, at the Olympics of Drag Racing, Schartman ran a 9.63/142 best and collected runner-up money on Sunday. On June 4, Schartman was at Englishtown for a Pro Stock race. Unfortunately, his 9.85 in the first round lost to Carmen Rotonda's 9.80. Eddie did set Top Speed, however, at 140.40. At the first USRT event at Phenix City, he ran well but failed to make it into the finals. At the AHRA Tulsa National Challenge, he qualified #12 with a 9.60/144.46 but fouled out in round one. At the USRT Factory showdown at Capitol, Ed qualified #1 with a 9.41, but against Dick Landy in round one, he missed a shift and lost. On September 18, at the IHRA US Open, Schartman qualified #3 with a 9.46. Ran a first-round 9.48/144 and a second-round 9.50/144.92 before losing to Ronnie Sox in the semifinal.

Notes: Bryant qualified #1 at the AHRA Winternationals with an 8.80/153.84 (Low ET and Top Speed). He beat Jerry Janke and, in the semifinals, stopped Frank Iaconio with an 8.94/153. He lost to Kevin Rotty's 8.91/151 in the final with a 9.00/152. At Pomona, he was the number 4 qualifier at 8.744/155.97. He lost to a holeshot by Larry Lombardo in the first round, when his 8.77/152 fell to Larry's 8.80/154. On April 2, he was at Fremont for the NHRA Division Seven race. He qualified #1 for the eight-car field with an 8.59/155.70. He improved to an 8.57 (Low ET) in the opening round of eliminations to beat Randy Humphrey. His consistent 8.59/156.79 beat Kevin Rotty's 8.74/150 in the semifinal. He faced Lee Hunter in the final, and Hunter had been running 8.7's all day. So it looked like he had this race in the bag. But Bryant slowed in the final as both cars ran 8.75 with the win light coming on in Hunter's lane. At the NHRA Cajun Nationals, his 8.73/159.17 qualified on the "bump" for the eight-car field. A first-round 8.74/155.17 upset "Dyno Don" Nicholson's 8.89/152. But in the semifinals, both he and his opponent, Lee Shepherd, ran 8.84 (Bryant at 153.32), and Lee got to the stripe first. Bryant was at Tulsa on May 7 for the AHRA Springnationals. He qualified #3 in the eight-car field with a 9.04/149.25. He sure improved on that time in the first round, where his 8.79/153.84 beat Kenny Hilger's little Chevette at 9.10/149. His 8.83/151.07 advanced when opponent Shepherd blew a transmission in the semifinals. He faced the similar big block Camaro of Warren Johnson in the final, and there was no stopping Sonny on this day as his final round 8.88/156.23 (Top Speed) scored the victory over WJ's 8.99/155. He was runner-up to Rotty again at the NHRA Division 7 race at OCIR. Sonny qualified #1 at 8.67/156.52. An even better 8.62 (Low ET) at 156.52 stopped Larry Johnson's 8.88/152 in round one. In the semifinals, Randy Humphrey's 8.75/156 could do nothing to stop Bryant's 8.64/157.32. He faced Rotty in the final, and despite running 8.62/157.06, he lost to Kevin's quicker-leaving 8.77/159. Bryant did not race at Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals. He was at Sacramento on June 18 for the NHRA Division seven race. An 8.64/155.45 qualified #2. He then ran 8.61/156.23 over a fouling Hunter in round one, and an 8.62/155.98 in the semifinals stopped Gary Hansen's 8.80/151. He ran his best time of the weekend, an 8.59 at 156.26, to win over over Mark Yuill's 8.75/153. He also won the fourth NHRA Division Seven race held at Bonneville. An opening round 9.05/145.64 beat Tom Chelbana and a 9.03/146.11 beat Hansen in the semis. In the final, he set Low ET with a 9.01 at 146.35, winning when Rotty fouled against him. Earlier, during qualifying, he had also set Top Speed at 149.01. He did not race at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals or Canada for the NHRA Grandnationals. The final Division 7 race was run at Beeline Dragway in August. Sonny ran 8.93 to qualify #3. He lowered that time by a tenth in the first round, where his 8.83/150.00 beat Chelbana. A semifinal 8.84/150.75 trailered Hunter's 9.01/149 and moved him into the final for another Rotty vs. Bryant showdown. This time, Sonny held the upper hand, and his final 8.89/151.51 beat Kevin's 8.91/153. He qualified #10 at Ontario for the NHRA World Finals with an 8.79/154.37, but his 8.82/153.84 in the first round, lost to Lombardo's 8.72/155. The best NHRA times were 8.660 at Seattle and 155.97 at Pomona Winters.

At Rockingham for the IHRA Pro-Am Championships, "Dyno" qualified #1 with a 9.00/151.26. He went on to win his first race with the Mustang II since its debut at the Gatornationals. Not only did he win, but he set Low ET and Top Speed at 8.91/152.28. In the final, Nicholson beat a fouling Reid Whisnant with an 8.93. At Bristol in June for the IHRA Springnationals, a 9.26 qualified #6 in the field, but Don hurt his engine on the run and was unable to run in eliminations.

Notes: Finished number 2 in 1976. Photo from the 1976 NHRA Gatornationals, Gainesville, Florida. 156.23 Gainesville. 8.74 AHRA Tucson. 158.45 Englishtown Summernationals (National Record) at 156.25 NHRA Springnationals Top Speed. | Warren Johnson had always run well in Pro Stock, but he really improved in '76. His season started well by winning the AHRA Winternationals in January at Tucson. He qualified #4 with an 8.74/152.02. After an easy first-round win, he beat Randy Humphrey in round two with a 9.05. He had to race Ken Dondero driving Bill Jenkins' Monza in the semifinals, and Warren proved up to the task, running 8.99/153.32 over Dondero's 9.04/150. In the final, he faced Lee Edwards in an all Camaro battle. Johnson got a slight holeshot, and his 9.01/153.32 held off Edwards' 9.00/149 for the victory. His next race was the Phoenix Winter Classic. It was another sixteen-car field, and his 8.90 qualified #1. In the first two rounds, he dropped Gary Hansen and Humphrey before losing to Richie Zul's similar big-block Camaro in the semifinals. After that, it was off to Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. A strong 8.79 qualified #2 behind Bill Jenkins himself, driving his Monza to 8.77 for the pole. Warren beat Edwards in round one, but in the second round, he lost to Wayne Gapp, who was still driving the "Gapp and Roush" four-door Maverick. At only his fourth ever NHRA National event, he made it to his first Pro Stock final at Gainesville for the Gatornationals. An 8.80 qualified him #4, and in the opening round, he beat Paul Blevins. He picked up to 8.78/156.25 in round two to beat Zul's 8.83. Another 8.78 at 156.52 beat Dave Kanners' 8.84 in the semifinals. In the final, he faced Larry Lombardo, who was now driving Jenkins' car. Warren ran his best, an 8.76/156.25, but failed to beat Lombardo's Low ET (and new NHRA ET record) 8.71/155. On April 11, he was at Kansas City International for the AHRA Show-Me Nationals. The times turned were unreal (never sure about the times turned at KCIR). Johnson ran 8.65 and 8.63 to reach the final, where he faced Dondero. Warren fouled in the final, wasting an 8.54/160.71, while Ken motored to the victory with an 8.80/156. He then won the NHRA Division 5 Opener at Denver. Warren set lot ET and Top Speed and a final round 9.40/145.40 beat Dale Falk. He won AHRA's third race of the season as well, the Okie Nationals held at Tulsa in May. Once again, it was a fight between WJ and Jenkins' driver, Dondero. Ken held the upper hand in qualifying, running 8.83/155, while Warren followed with an 8.90/155.17. Johnson picked up the pace during eliminations, running 8.87/153.32 and 8.86/155.17, while Dondero's best was 8.88. The two faced off in the final, and Johnson won with an 8.80 (Low ET) at 155.17 over Ken's 8.87/154. He got into another NHRA final at Columbus for the Springnationals. WJ's 8.84/155.17 qualified #2 behind Wally Booth's 8.82. These two would work their way into the final. In the first round, his 8.81/154.37 beat Gapp's 9.14/149. A second-round 8.87/153.58 took out Lombardo's 8.94/155. In the semifinals, an 8.83/153 beat Bob Glidden's 8.92/153. Booth had been running strong in eliminations, and in the final, his 8.74/154 easily covered WJ's 8.81/156.25 (Top Speed). Englishtown was his next stop for the NHRA Summernationals. He qualified #5 with an 8.76/158.45 (Top Speed and a new NHRA speed record). He lasted until the second round, where his 8.80/157.61 lost to Lombardo's 8.72/154. He followed the NHRA tour to Canada for the Grandnationals. He qualified #3 in the eight-car field with an 8.69/158.73 (Top Speed and another NHRA speed record), and he lasted until the semifinal, where his 8.79/155.97 lost to Booth's 8.69/155. After that, it was off to Martin, Michigan, for the PHR Championships. He continued to qualify well with an 8.83 that got him the #3 spot in the sixteen-car field. Unfortunately, he broke in the first round.

Notes: Booth qualified #4 at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals with an 8.72. In the first round, he beat Gary Hansen before losing to a Richie Zul holeshot 8.81 that beat his quicker 8.79 in round two. Wally again qualified well at the NHRA Gatornationals, where he was #2 with an 8.72 behind "Dyno Don" Nicholson's 8.65. He went on to beat Roy Hill and Frank Iaconio in the first two rounds. He blew his engine on an 8.98 winning pass over Ken Dondero's off-pace 9.11 in the "Gapp and Roush" Pinto in the semifinals. He was unable to run in the final, and Nicholson soloed for the victory. Another runner-up finish followed at the NHRA Division 3 race at Indianapolis. There he lost to Bob Glidden in the final. Wally had been in six NHRA National Event finals in '76, so it what somewhat surprising that at the NHRA Cajun Nationals, he was in the last Pro Stock final round of his career. Baton Rouge only had eight-car PRO fields, and Booth's 8.66/156.25 qualified #2 behind Glidden's 8.62. These two would work their way to the final. Wally ran 8.79/154.53 in the opening round to beat Mike North, and a semifinal 8.82/154.37 advanced when Kevin Rotty fouled. In the final, Booth ran well, but his 8.73/153.58 finished runner-up to Glidden's 8.65/156. He set Low ET in qualifying #1 at the NHRA Springnationals with an 8.64. Booth lasted until the semifinals before his 8.78 lost to Nicholson's 8.76. He did win the third NHRA Division 3 race at Martin, Michigan. He also set Low ET and Top Speed there with an 8.71/157.34. Englishtown was NHRA's next stop for the Summernationals. Wally qualified #3 with an 8.70/156.52, but a sleepy 8.62/156 in the opening round lost to Joe Satmary's 8.78/154. He followed the NHRA tour to Canada for the Grandnationals. It was an eight-car field, and Wally's 8.67 qualified #3. He beat Bob Ingles in the first round, but he lost to Glidden in the semis. Shortly after that, he was at Suffolk for the NHRA Division 2 race. An 8.67 qualified #2 just behind Nicholson's 8.66. In round one, he beat Lamar Walden in Barry Setzer's Monza with an 8.80/153.58. But in the semifinals, he was late off the line, and his 8.85/152.05 lost to Ingles' 8.91/151. His next stop was at Indianapolis for the NHRA US Nationals. Wally qualified #8 with an 8.77. A first-round 8.92/150 beat Alban Gauthier, but in round two a late leaving 8.78/151 lost to Iaconio's slower 8.89/152. Wally did not make the long tow to Seattle for the NHRA Fallnationals, but he did go to Ontario Motor Speedway for the NHRA World Finals. An 8.80 qualified #6, but once again, he lost to a holeshot. This time Ronnie Manchester's 8.93 in the first round, stopped his quicker 8.83. In the NHRA season-long points chase, Booth finished sixth. The best NHRA national event speed was 156.79 at E-Town. Ran 8.62/156 at Englishtown 77, but that run lost in Round 1 to a massive Joe Satmary holeshot and an 8.78/154. Ran 8.61/157.34 at US 131 WCS, 8.75 at Pomona, 8.72 at Gainesville, 8.64 at Columbus, 8.62 at Englishtown, 8.77 at Indy, 8.77 at Sanair.

Notes: Jim bought Wayne Gapp's Maverick and ran it in '73. The Boss 429 was punched out to 443 inches. It was a pretty strong runner; although it did not set any track records, it did run 9.27 at Cincinnati, 9.30 at Milan, 9.27 at Oswego, Illinois, and a best of 9.04 at Saginaw. On May 5, he was at Edgewater for the Super Pro Stock Circuit race. It was an eight-car show, and in the first round, his 9.54 beat Joe Satmary. In the semifinal, Kelly Chadwick fouled against him, and Halloran advanced at 9.67. In the final, he faced the similar Boss 429 powered Maverick of Eddie Schartman. Unfortunately, Jim broke a clutch just off the line in the final while "Fast Eddie" ran 9.43 for the victory.

Ran 9.02/149.75 at Indy Nationals. 8.96 at Sanair. 8.78/155.17 at PRO race at NY National at 6.75#, CID (listed on Match Race list), 8.96 at Sanair 74. | Jenkins' Vega was still the top Chevy campaigner in '74. He was at Beeline for the AHRA Winternationals where he qualified #2 with an 8.90/153.32 behind Ford campaigner Bob Glidden's 8.89/154. These two would end up in the final. Bill started his march by running 8.92/153.06 to beat Larry Huff's Mopar at 9.25/149. In round two he took out Mike Fons' Mopar with an 8.93/152.80 to Mike's 9.06/149. A semifinal 8.87/153.84 stopped Wayne Gapp's 9.03/151 Pinto effort and advanced Jenkins into the final against Glidden. It was expected to be a close race as Bob had run 8.88, 8.91, and 8.94 to reach the final. Unfortunately, Bill was going to be a bit "Grumpy" after his late start coupled with an 8.85/154.01 lost to Glidden's slower 8.93/152. He had some consolation in that he set a new AHRA ET record on the run. After that, Jenkins had things go his way at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. He qualified #3 behind the Fords of Glidden and Gapp with an 8.98/152.28. In the first round, he met Paul Blevins who was pushing hard to beat Bill as the #1 Chevy, but his off-pace 9.33/148 lost to the "Grump's" 9.05/151.77. In round two, an 8.92/152.02 beat Melvin Yow's 9.12/152. He faced Glidden in the semifinals where a Low ET of the meet 8.91 at 153.06 put the Pinto's 9.09/143 on the trailer. The final was another Ford vs. Chevy match and Bill ran 8.93/152.54 to nip Gapp's close 8.94/152. He qualified #4 at the NHRA Gatornationals with a 9.06/151.00 and in the first round, improved to 9.03/150.00 while beating Hubert Platt's 9.06/151. In the second round Bill took a nap and his 8.97/150.50 lost to Frank Iaconio's 9.12/151. Bill was driving less and less, and he hired Ken Dondero to drive at AHRA events as well as the NHRA Division 1 events. He still drove at most of his match races.

Notes: Hunter's amazing 160.14 at the AHRA Winters was the sport's first official 160, eclipsing Warren Johnson's 158.63 record from 1976. Lee also ran 8.76 at Bakersfield. His best NHRA national event times were not representative of his prowess: 8.870/153.06 at the Pomona Winternationals (qualified #10; fouled against Larry Lombardo in round one), and 8.970/152.80 third alternate DNQ at the World Finals.

In the semifinals, Roy Hill's Arrow broke, and Bryant's 8.64/157.06 advanced. He faced another Arrow in the final. This one was Bob Glidden's. As well as Sonny had been running, there was no stopping Glidden this day as he was running 8.4's. Sure enough, Bob's final round 8.49 got the victory over Bryant's 8.71. At the NHRA Gatornationals, Sonny qualified #5 with an 8.65/158.17. A first-round 8.67/156.52 beat Billy Wash, but in round two, he fouled away an 8.73/156.52 against Glidden, who ran 8.55/149.

Notes: Don quit drag racing when he lost his Chrysler factory deal. He sold his Duster to Sox & Martin. Then he had a change of heart and came back as an independent with the hottest combo at the time - a 351 Cleveland-powered Ford Pinto. - Car Craft, July 1973. Ron ran 9.32 at LaPlace, 9.221/149.25 to qualify #10 at NHRA Indianapolis. Don then went two rounds, hitting best times on race day at 9.18/150.74. The 9.18 lost a close one to event runner-up Wayne Gapp's 9.15. We need to confirm the 9.05 at Dallas.

Notes: Photo from 1971 Nats, Indy. Family owned a trucking company (Yowell Movers) in Centerville, OH, near Dayton. Best NHRA ET was at Ontario at 9.726. Best speed was a booming 144.28 at Englishtown. Ran 9.70s everywhere. Did OK in eliminations, but his best NHRA day was at Indy, where he went three rounds, losing a close one to Butch Leal, 9.73 to 9.77, to miss the semis. Won NHRA Division 3 event in Bowling Green on 9/19/71 over Stu McDade with a 9.79/140.18.

Notes: Rick Howard photo. Also ran 9.84 at St. Louis. | Jim qualified #13 at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals with a 10.092/138.24. He had the third quickest Chevy in the 32 car field behind Ron Hutter and Bill Jenkins. He lasted until round two before losing to Arlen Vanke. Shortly after that, he was at Beeline Dragway for the AHRA Winternationals. This was a sixteen-car field and five Camaros made the field with Jim's 10.16 being the slowest (#15). But he picked up to 10.06/136.98 in the first round, to beat Dick Oldfield who fouled away a 9.96/140 in the "Motown Missile.” Another strong run of 10.07/137.19 beat Lee Smith's quicker 10.02/138 in round two and going into the semifinals, Hayter had the only Chevy left in the field. But he slowed to 10.12/137.67 and lost to eventual winner Vanke’s 10.01/140. In Mid-March, he joined the Fred Gibb racing team. He was the strongest of the four Chevy qualifiers at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals with a 9.750/141.16. But he fell off to 10.13/137.61 in the opening round that lost to Reid Whisnant's 10.05/138. His next stop was at West Palm Beach for the AHRA Pro-Am Championships. He reached the final, but in spite of running 9.96/137.61 he was nowhere close to the winning 9.71/141 of Don Carlton who had now taken over driving the "Motown Missile.” The Chevy Pro Stock teams were having a harder and harder time trying to keep pace with the Mopar Hemis. Even the Fords stepped up their pace and the Chevy teams were starting to fall behind. It was dark days for them in NHRA competition, but AHRA decided to let the Chevys have a weight handicap. Of course, this helped immensely. At Green Valley Raceway, for the next AHRA Grand American race, all the Mopar teams boycotted this race except for Bobby Yowell. So, the field was made up of fourteen Chevys, one Ford, and Yowell's Duster. It was a Chevy lover's dream. Jim beat the Camaros of Wayne Dobbs, Bill Hielscher, and Royce Freeman to reach the final. His semifinal win came with a 10.09. His final round opponent was Joe Satmary whose semifinal win came at 10.32. So, it looked like Hayter had the win in the bag, but he fouled and gave the win to Satmary. Things were still really bad for the Chevy teams in NHRA as at Dallas, for the NHRA Springnationals, Jim only qualified #18 in the 32 car show. He lost to eventual winner Ronnie Sox in the opening round.rn

Notes: Getting out of Pro Stock was a $ thing. I was able to stay 'competitive' on the West Coast for a couple of years. Went to final round at The "Last Race" at Lions Drag Strip. Was out 2 cars on the other finalist, but we left the towel/foam in the hood scoop. All was going great until 4th gear and no air was no HP. Caught me by a nose. That was before 'reaction times' were measured and my old bracket racing days gave me an edge. The car went into M/P and B/Gas when the Lenco transmissions came out. What? $2,750 for a transmission? This was an original factory SS/B car (50 made by Dodge and Hurst) for Dick Landy! Might have made a big mistake selling it. Ya think? - Dean Tait

Notes: Also, 9.65 at Portland 72 and 9.64 at Irwindale. | Bill probably had his best season in '72. The season for him started at the first OCIR All-Pro race. It was an eight-car field, and he qualified #5. That set up a first-round meeting with the low qualifier, "Dyno Don" Nicholson, who had set a 9.44 track record. Bad luck was on Bill's side as the Maverick's shifter linkage broke and Bagshaw's 9.84/141.06 advanced. But in the semifinals, Bagshaw broke a rear end and had to watch as his opponent, Bob Lambeck, soloed into the final. He was at Beeline for the AHRA Winternationals, where his 9.79 qualified #8 in the sixteen-car field. Bill beat Carmen Rotunda and Bobby Yowell before running alternate Lynn Harrison in the semifinals. A 9.99 dispatched the Camaro and moved Bagshaw into the final against Butch Leal. Bill tried hard in the final, but his 9.75/141.06 was no match against Leal's winning 9.66/143. At the second OCIR All-Pro race, he ran well lasting until the semifinal of the eight-car show. He then went to Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, where he qualified #9 in the 32 car field. He lasted until the second round, where his 9.85 lost to eventual winner Bill Jenkins' 9.62. The following week (February 13), Bagshaw was at OCIR for the third All-Pro race. A first-round 9.80 beat Sonny Bryant, but in the semifinals, his 9.75/141.73 lost to Leal's 9.70/143. His next stop was at Famoso for the Bakersfield March Meet. There he lasted until the semifinals, where he fouled against Bob Lambeck. At the AHRA Northern Nationals at Fremont, Bagshaw was running well. A second-round 9.68/143.54 beat Harrison, but he broke a driveshaft against Lambeck in the semifinals. He won the NHRA Division 7 Opener, stopping Leal in the final. Bill was at Sacramento on June 24 for the NHRA Division Seven race. While he didn't reach the final, he was the low qualifier for the eight-car field with his 9.59. He got another win on July 8th at the NHRA Division Seven race held at Lions. He faced Leal in the final, and Butch fouled away a 9.67/143 while Bagshaw ran 9.66/141.28 for the victory.9.79 NHRA Pomona CA 2/72.

Notes: Qualified at Indy 1972 with a 9.734 then went quicker during eliminations. | Shortly after taking over the driving duties of Dyno’s Maverick, Dondero went to Fremont for the AHRA Northern Nationals. He qualified #1 with a 9.44 and picked up to a first-round 9.43/145.63. In the semifinals, he ran another strong 9.46/145.39, but lost to Butch Leal's track record 9.40 at 146. Ken qualified #2 with a 9.461/144.69 at the Gatornationals. A first-round 9.51/143.08 beat Bobby Yowell's 9.71/141. In round two, a 9.57 beat Stuart McDade's 9.65. But in the semifinals, a 9.54/143.31 lost to Don Carlton's 9.55/143. He stopped off at Englishtown for an eight-car show, but after beating Carmen Rotonda in the first round, with a 9.66/142.63 it rained and the race was called off. He failed to qualify at the NHRA Springnationals. At the USRT race at Capitol Raceway, Dondero qualified #6 with a 9.55. He ran a best of 9.52/144.95 before losing in round two.
