Notes: Sox and Martin were running well in '79 with their new small-block program. They qualified #4 at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals with an 8.65/157.06. An opening round 8.69/155.97 beat Billy Walsh, but the Omni broke against Roy Hill in round two. Things went much better at the Gatornationals. Sox qualified the car #6 with an 8.65/156.79. In the first round, his 8.63/155.17 beat Ronnie Manchester's 8.96/152. In round two, Sox improved to 8.61/155 to beat Larry Lombardo's 8.62/156 in Bill Jenkins' Camaro. Another 8.65/155 beat Don Campanello and set up the first all-Mopar NHRA Pro Stock final since the '73 Springnationals. Unfortunately, Sox was the underdog as Bob Glidden had been running 8.5's with ease. Ronnie tried to cut the light to close in the final and fouled away an 8.75/156.25 while Glidden sailed past with an 8.53 at only 147. The next event on the NHRA trail was the Cajun Nationals at Baton Rouge. Sox qualified #4 at the rain-delayed event and lost to Wally Booth in the first round. Things didn't go too well at the NHRA Springnationals, either. An 8.78 qualified #11, and he lost to Frank Iaconio in the first round. Another first-round loss came at the NHRA Mile High Nationals. It was an eight-car show, and Ronnie qualified #7 with a 9.34/144.92. In the opening round, both he and eventual winner Randy Humphrey ran 9.35 (Sox at 144.46), but Randy got the win. At Englishtown, for the NHRA Summernationals, an 8.72 qualified the team in the #10 spot. Sox lost to Iaconio in the first round. They did not follow the NHRA tour to Canada for the Grandnationals, but they were at Indianapolis for the US Nationals. Sox's 8.76/154.90 barely qualified (#15), and his first-round 8.89/154.17 got knocked out by Humphrey's 8.88/151. The next race was the NHRA Fallnationals at Seattle. Ronnie qualified #7 with an 8.600/156.24. A first-round 8.64/155.17 beat Brad Yuill and another 8.60/155.70 took out Don Nicholson in round two. He came up against a wall in the form of Glidden in the semifinals, and despite running a strong 8.62/155.97, he lost to Glidden's 8.47/157. The NHRA season came to a close at Ontario for the World Finals. There, Ronnie's 8.82/153.84 qualified #10. His season came to an end in the first round, where his 8.84/153.06 lost to Iaconio's 8.70/152. In NHRA points, the team finished tenth. They sold their NHRA legal Omni to Jerry Hurley in December and decided to run big-inch IHRA events for '80. Also 8.659 at Winters and 8.63 156.79 at Gators, where he was Runner up. Also 8.62 155.97 and 8.64 155.17 NHRA Seattle Fallnationals. |

Notes: John was a DNQ at NHRA Gainesville (times not reported). He was at Englishtown for an eight-car NHRA Pro Stock Circuit race. He ran 9.39/147.05 to beat Rich LaMont's Gremlin in the first round, but he missed a shift in the semifinals and lost to Scott Shafiroff. In August, he competed at an eight-car show at Maple Grove. In the opening round, his 9.61/143.54 beat Carlton Phillips' 9.60/140. In the semifinal, his 9.50/142.63 was defeated by eventual winner Dave Strickler who ran 9.29/144. The best NHRA national event time was the 9.386/146.19 at the US Nationals that was DNQ. Photo from the 1973 US Nationals. Also ran 9.32 at Atco. He raced at the last Pro Stock event of the Connecticut season but had rear-end problems and fell in the first round, to Bob Ingles. In November, he competed at the Suffolk National Open. In the opening round, his late leaving 9.18/147.49 lost to Bruce Larson's 9.21/144. Shortly after that, the car was at Atco, where it would make its final pass. Healey was there for an eight-car show. The little Pinto had been running really well by this time, dipping into the 9.1's more and more. On this day, he once again ran 9.19/148.78 in the first round. While this was good, he lost the race to Herb McCandless, driving the "Brooklyn Heavy" Dodge, who won with an 8.57/158. Herb was running the car about 300lbs light. So although John was out of the eliminations, he went up against Paul Blevins in a consolation race. This was the car's final pass as John got out of shape and crossed into Blevins' lane, almost hitting the Vega in the rear. He tried to drive out of it, but the Pinto ended up flipping six times before coming to a stop. The car was totaled. Who said that Pinto's were dangerous? John walked away without even a scratch. |

Notes: Ken drove this car at the 1973 NHRA Winternationals. Did it race in 1972, too? Ken ran 9.657/142.85 to qualify #16 at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. The race was rained out and he did not return for the rain date. Don raced at Indy and qualified #8 at 9.180/147.05 but lost to Arlen Vanke in round one, when he crossed the center line. He raced Don Nicholson's second Pinto at Ontario. |

Notes: By 1973, there weren't a lot of Challengers running in Pro Stock as most of the Mopar campaigners had switched to the A-body platform. Castaldo stuck to his Challenger and did well with it. In April, he was at Suffolk for an eight-car show. Those pesky Vega's were running well as they picked up the first three spots in qualifying. Castaldo's 9.52 beat Earl Hansell's 10.81 in the opening round of eliminations. But he spun the tires hard in the semifinal and lost to Rich Mirarcki's 9.85. He was at Englishtown on April 15 for an eight-car round-robin show. In the first round, his 9.71/145.86 lost to Mirarcki's 9.51/144. In his second race, Ray Allen's 9.50/145 defeated his 9.57/143.31. He soloed in his third race and ran his best time at 9.53/144.23. Shortly after that, he went to Connecticut for yet another eight-car show. A first-round 9.72 beat Rich Simone, and in the semifinal, his eased up 10.16 advanced when Frank Iaconio fouled. But he hurt the engine on the pass and could not run the final. Iaconio took his place as the "break rule" was in effect. Charlie was the second alternate at the NHRA Summernationals at 9.52/143.50. That was his only NHRA national event. Charlie won at an Englishtown event in July with a 9.51/143.76, per Raceway Park News. He also ran 9.46 at Atco. Reed Koeppe owns the car as of 9/21, and he confirms S&M built it. |

Notes: Bill debuted the new Camaro at Englishtown, qualifying #10 at 9.838/138.46. He beat Rich LaMont in round one, 9.86 to 11.96, but lost to Don Nicholson in round two, 9.64 to another 9.86. At Indy, Bill qualified #10 at 9.777/140.84, but he was shocked by Hubert Platt in round one, 9.85 to 9.96. Bill also ran 9.80 at York with this car. That was his last national event in his own car, but he qualified Bill Coe's Duster at Ontario (and then Coe drove during eliminations). |

Notes: It was getting near the end for the AMC entries in NHRA Pro Stock competition in '78. But Booth still had a good year and finished ninth in the NHRA Pro Stock year-end standings. At the season-opening Winternationals at Pomona, Wally's 8.82/153 qualified #10. In the first round, he dropped #2 qualifier Warren Johnson with a quick-leaving 8.68/154 that beat Johnson's quicker 8.65/157. But in the second round, against Gordie Rivera, he got crossed up and shut off to a 10.25 loss. At Gainesville, for the NHRA Gatornationals, a strong 8.65/156 qualified the car in the #6 position. An opening round 8.79/156 beat Lee Hunter's 8.85/154, but a second-round 8.70/154 lost to Frank Iaconio's 8.67/155. He ran a strong 8.65 to qualify #3 in the eight-car field at the NHRA Cajun Nationals. In the opening round, his 8.78/155.17 beat Dempsey Hardy's 8.83/154. But in the semifinals, he and Bob Glidden had a great race with Bob's 8.66/156 beating the AMC's close 8.69/155.97. On May 21, he was at Edgewater for the NHRA Division Three race. There he set Low ET and Top Speed at 8.65/156.25. He reached the final against Joe Satmary only to have the car break on the line. Booth could only watch as Satmary ran 8.83/155 for the victory. Booth was the only AMC car in the field at all of those events, but at the Division Three race held at Indianapolis on June 4, their numbers doubled as Andy Mannarino also qualified his AMC for the show. Booth still outqualified Andy with his 8.70/155.44 coming in at the #3 spot compared to Andy's #4 position. Another 8.70/156.79 in the first round, beat Larry Peternel's Mopar at 9.12/150, but he again faced off against Glidden in the semifinals. It was again close with the Ford's 8.67/158 nipping the AMC's 8.68/155.97. Both AMC's showed up for the NHRA Springnationals, and Booth's 8.73/155.44 qualified #6 while Andy's got the #12 spot in the field. But both went down in the first round. Booth's late 8.92/152.80 lost to Don Campanello's 8.96/151. His next stop was at Martin, Michigan, on June 24 for another NHRA Division Three race. Booth qualified #2 with an 8.71/155.44 behind Glidden's pole setting 8.62/158. In round one, Wally's 8.73/154.10 beat Peternel's 9.08. He faced off against the only other competitive AMC car in the semifinals, and his 8.75/154.37 sent Mannarino packing at 8.98/150. The final was against Satmary, with the outcome being a reversal of what had happened at Edgewater earlier in the year. Satmary's Camaro broke on the line, and Wally ran 8.69/154.90 for the victory. The cars were back at Edgewater on July 9 for the NHRA Division 3 race, where he qualified #3 behind Joe Satmary's Camaro and Bob Glidden's new Fairmont with an 8.81. An improved 8.79 took out John Frech, but Satmary got some revenge in the semifinals with his 8.78/153 beating Booth's 8.79/154.37. Both AMC entries qualified at the NHRA Summernationals, with Andy's leading the two by getting the #8 spot while Booth got the #15 position. But Booth surprised Johnson in the first round, running an 8.70/155.17 to beat Warren's 8.80/154. A round two 8.73/153.84 trailered Mark Yuill's quicker 8.67/156, but he came up against Glidden in the semifinals. Bob had been running 8.5s with ease, and despite Booth running another strong 8.70/154.10, he was still almost two-tenths behind Bob, who ran an 8.54/149 (pulling the 'chute early) to advance. He did not follow the NHRA tour to Canada for the Grandnationals or attend the PHR Championships. He was also absent from the final NHRA Division Three race held at Beech Bend. His next national event showing came at Indy for the NHRA US Nationals, where he failed to qualify. He did win the NHRA Country Boy Open at Cumberland International raceway on September 9. It was an eight-car show, and he beat Roy Hill's 9.08/154 in the first round, with an 8.84/152.78 and a semifinal 8.89/151.77 took care of Lamar Walden's 9.33/145. He faced Jim Kinnett in the final, and his 8.84/152.54 got the victory over Jim's 8.89/154. A couple of weeks later, he was in Seattle for the NHRA Fallnationals. He qualified #13 and ran 8.75/154.90 to beat Sonny Bryant's much quicker 8.66/154 in the opening round. But eventual winner Glidden, stopped his advance in round two with an 8.52/157 covering Booth's 8.67/153.84. The best NHRA times were 8.651 at the Cajuns and 156.79 at Gainesville. Wally also ran 8.70/154.10 at Englishtown and 8.68 at Pomona. |

Notes: Also 8.90 at 1975 at Martin and Tri-City WCS. Also, 152.54 at West Salem 75. | The Maskin and Kanners Hornet was half of AMC's Pro Stock effort along with Wally Booth. The two ran well in '75 but nothing near as well as they would in '76. At Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, Dave qualified #4 with an 8.871/152.80 just in front of Booth's 8.92/151. Kanners ran well, running 8.92 and 8.95 to reach the semifinals, where he faced Bob Glidden's "new" '70 Mustang. Dave's 8.90 was strong, but Glidden's stronger 8.82 got the win. At Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals, Kanners again was the stronger of the two AMC cars in qualifying. His 8.90/152.02 got the #4 spot for the show. He beat Roy Hill's Duster in the first round, with an 8.98 and another 8.98 in round two beat Ron Hutter's surprising Vega at 9.07. In the semifinals, he faced the Gapp and Roush Maverick. Gapp had been running 8.8's in eliminations, and his performance advantage held in the semifinals, where Dave's 8.95/151 fell to Gapp's 8.91/153. The two AMC teams shared information, and Booth-Arons built a lot of the engine parts. They shared input from test sessions, but early in '75, the two teams drifted apart when Dave started trying different combinations using Diamond Racing Engines to do their research and development. Dave was at Dragway 42 in May for the AHRA Grandnationals. He qualified #3 with an 8.90/155.97 while Booth was a little farther back in the #6 spot. Both lasted until the semifinals of the eight-car show. Dave's 8.93 lost to a holeshot 9.00 front Ken Dondero driving Bill Jenkins' Vega. Dave won the NHRA Divisional race at Suffolk. He beat Lee Edwards in the final with an 8.95/149. Dave was at Thunder Valley in Marion, SD, for the NHRA Division 5 race in June. He won that as well with a final round 9.22/147.54 over a fouling Warren Johnson. At the NHRA Springnationals, his 8.99/149.00 qualified #2. Unfortunately, he was late in the first round, and his 9.04/150.75 lost to Richie Zul's 9.11/150. Dave ran his best NHRA times of the year at Indy, qualifying #4 at 8.870/153.32 and making it to round 3, where eventual runner-up Richie Zul won an 8.95 to 8.96 decision. |

Notes: Coleman had his new Duster out at LaPlace Dragway on April 1st for the NHRA Division Four opener. In the first round, Bob Penner fouled against him. A 9.50 in the semifinal beat Charlie Rogers' 9.60. In the final, he faced low qualifier, Larry Huff, and Huff ran an off-pace 9.88/142 while Bob got the victory with a 9.44/144. He was at Southland Dragway in May for the second NHRA Division Four race. He set Low ET and Top Speed at 9.19/148.29 while reaching the final. In the final, his 9.48/145.39 finished runner-up to Oscar Roberts' 9.49/143. |

Notes: SRD delivered this car to Bruce at the end of 1972. Bruce had been running Bill Jenkins' '70 Camaro as a lease. Larson debuted his new Vega at the NHRA Springnationals in June. New car bugs kept him from qualifying for the show. It took a while, but by the end of August, Bruce really had his Vega flying. At the NHRA Pro Stock Circuit race at Englishtown, he only qualified #5 for the eight-car show, but he beat Frank Iaconio in the opening round, and a semifinal 9.34/145.16 beat Al Joniec's Pinto at 9.43/145. He faced Scott Shafiroff in an all-Vega final, and his 9.24/146.34 got him the victory over Scott's 9.41/145. At the NHRA US Nationals, his 9.364/144.46 qualified way down in the #27 spot. His first-round 9.35 lost to Bob Riffle's 9.22. The following week (September 9), he was at the NED Fallnationals at Englishtown. Once again, the final came down to the two Vegas of Shafiroff and Larson. And once again, Bruce outran Scott, this time a 9.19/148.27 (Top Speed) got the win over a 9.21/147. Shortly after that (September 15), he was at Atco for the NHRA Division One final. In the opening round of eliminations, his 9.41/147.78 beat Charlie Castaldo's 9.46/144. Bruce also ran 9.210 at Suffolk. |

Notes: Don started the season in a '69 Cuda that he raced at Beeline for the AHRA Winternationals. He lost in the first round, to Ronnie Sox. At Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, he qualified #7 with a 10.22 and lasted until round two, where he lost to Wally Booth's Camaro. On February 15, he was at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals. A 10.12 qualified #7, and he advanced past round one when Sam Carroll fouled against him. In round two, he lost to Don Carlton driving one of Sox and Martin's cars. Rockingham hosted the AHRA Pro-Am Championships in April, and Don was there. He advanced when Ed Miller pulled a wheelstand and busted his oil pan on the landing in the first round. But in round two, he fouled against Sox. He had some bad luck at the fourth AHRA Grand American race at Frontier Raceway. Don qualified #4, but before eliminations, he was changing engines. The hoist broke and dropped the engine onto the grill and radiator support on the front of the car. The damage was too much for the car to run. Grotheer was at Dallas for the Division 3 Opener on May 3. He lasted until the semifinals, where his 10.64 lost to Jim Hayter's 10.32. A week later, he was at York US 30 for the Super Stock Nationals. Forty-four Pro Stock cars were there, and Don's 'Cuda was one of them. He beat Hubert Platt and then lost in round three. Early in June, he was at Bristol for the AHRA Springnationals. He beat Eddie Schartman's 10.59 in the first round, with a 10.42, but he lost in round two. He also lost in round two a week later (June 14) at the NHRA Springnationals. A first Round 10.31 beat Ronnie Mercer, but he fouled against Booth in the second round. Grotheer won at Seattle's Pro Stock Championships in July. He qualified #1 with a 10.27 and then ran 10.28 in the first round, over a fouling Jim Petrie. He had an easy second-round race and then ran another 10.28 in the semifinals to beat Dick Tutino. In the final, he ran Bob Lambeck. Don set both ends of the track record while winning with a 10.10/136.36 over Lambeck's 10.43/135. His next stop was at York for the NHRA Summernationals. Don qualified #4 with a 10.06/137.40. He ran another 10.06 at 138.46 in the first round, to beat a fouling John Petrie. In round two, his Cuda developed problems and slowed to 15.05 that lost to Herb McCandless' 10.06/138. |

Notes: This original Pro Stock car was thrown together at Bill Thomas' shop in Anaheim, Ca. It was driven in 1970 by both Howard Harmon (Rockin Robin Chevy II) and Jim Baker (SS/EA). It used a Dickie Harrell 396 cubic inch ZL-1 motor with closed chamber heads and a roller cam. New car bugs kept it from qualifying at the Winternationals. however, one month later, it won a big Pro Stock event at OCIR with Howard Harmon driving. | Ran 10.43 at OCIR. - Mike Gagnon | Jim was at Irwindale on Feb. 22 for a twelve-car show. An opening round 10.79/130.05 lost to Tom Jacobson's 10.58/131. |
