Notes: Sonny was at the third OCIR All-Pro race on February 13. It was an eight-car field, and just qualifying was tough. He made the show, but he lost to Bill Bagshaw in the first round. | Also ran 9.802/140.38 at Indy 1972 and 9.57/144.46 at NHRA Ontario 72. Ontario times from eliminations. Check qualifying to see if he ran better. Also 9.70 at Lions. |

Notes: Bryant was thrilled that the NHRA lowered the big block Chevy's weight breaks from 7.0 to 6.5 lbs per cubic inch for '73. Sonny had one of the strongest big-block Camaros. His season started at OCIR for the second All-Pro race. It was an eight-car field, and his 9.60 was the strongest Chevy in the show, qualifying #5 behind four Mopars. He improved a tenth in the first round, running a 9.50/145.86, but it was no match against low qualifier Butch Leal's 9.36/147. At Pomona, he ran 9.68/145.39 on the first qualifying weekend to take the #14 spot in the field. The race was interrupted by rain for two weekends, and by the time qualifying had ended, his time had slid back in the field, forcing him to run Bill Jenkins in the opening round. Still, he was the second-quickest Chevy qualifier behind Jenkins' Vega. His off-pace 10.01/144.46 fell to the "Grump's" 9.54/147 in their race. Shortly after, he returned to OCIR for the third OCIR All-Pro race. He qualified #3 with a 9.55 behind Dick Landy and Leal. A first-round 9.58/144.92 beat Jim Baker's 10.22/138 but his semifinal 9.49/145 lost to Dick Landy's 9.27/146. He also ran well for the AHRA Northern Nationals at Fremont. He lasted until round two, where his 9.38/144.69 lost to Larry Huff's 9.26/147. In May, he was at Bakersfield for the NHRA Division Seven race. He beat Jack Waldrip in round one, and a semifinal 9.56/143.76 advanced when Baker fouled. In the final, he faced Leal. Leal set Low ET and Top Speed in the final, winning at 9.41/145, while Sonny shut down at 11.10/83 for the runner-up honors. Shortly after that, he was at Irwindale for its Memorial Day Championships. It was an eight-car field, and his 9.51 qualified #1. Bryant's 9.39/144.92 in the opening round defeated Gary Dodd's 10.03/138. In the semifinal, the Camaro slowed to 9.50/146.10, losing to Bagshaw's 9.22/147. A few days later (June 2), he went to Sacramento for another eight-car show. Once again, he qualified #1, this time with a 9.24/149.96. He repeated the same ET in the first round, at 148, to beat Don Lorenzen's 9.74/135. He ran his third straight 9.24 (at 148) in the semifinal to take out Dale Falk. Once again, he came face to face with Bagshaw in the final. Both ran great, but the Dodge driver's 9.11/146 came out on top over Sonny's 9.16/149.96. The speed was a new track record for Sacramento. Bryant next went to Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals. He had the only Camaro that qualified for the sixteen-car field. A 9.50 got him the #14 spot. In the opening round, his 9.55/142.63 upset Bob Glidden's off-pace 9.83. In round two, his 9.64/142.85 fell to Wayne Gapp's 9.59/144. On June 23, he won the NHRA Division Seven race at Irwindale. A 9.37 qualified #1, and he followed that up in round one with a 9.40/144.69 to beat Lorenzen's 9.98/133. He soloed in the semifinal when Baker could not show, and he ran 9.30/145.16 to advance. Of course, Bagshaw was his opponent in the final. Sonny won, setting Low ET and Top Speed at 9.28/145.86 to beat Bill's 9.39/145. He was at Maryland International for the 1st annual U.S. P/S Open in July. He qualified #9, and in the first round, his 9.32/145 lost to low qualifier Stuart McDade's 8.93/150. Sonny was runner-up to Bill Bagshaw at Irwindale on August 4 with a 9.37/146.57. Bagshaw won on a holeshot at 9.42/145.16. Sonny qualified at 9.338/146.10 at NHRA Indianapolis on September 1 and then went 9.40/147.29 in a loss to Butch Leal's 9.10/150 in round one. His best NHRA national event ET was a 9.278 #9 qualifier at NHRA Englishtown. He went as fast as 147.29 in eliminations at Indy. |

Notes: Second Big Block Camaro pro stock in the eight-second zone. Qualified fourth at AHRA Fremont Northern Nats on 3/30/74. Ran 9.31 at Pomona, 9.28 at Columbus, and 9.17, 9.117/150.00 at Ontario. | Sonny attempted to qualify at the NHRA Winternationals, but his best of 9.32/145.39 failed to make the show. He was at Famoso on March 3 for the Bakersfield March Meet, where he qualified #2 with a 9.30, but he failed to reach the finals. He was finished runner-up at the AHRA Northern Nationals at Fremont on March 17. A final round 9.15/149 lost to Bill Bagshaw's 9.03/153. In June, he was at National Trail for the NHRA Springnationals, where he qualified #14 with a 9.28. The Camaro broke in the first round, giving opponent Scott Shafiroff a free ride into round two. He qualified #2 at the second NHRA Division 7 race held at Sacramento. Bryant made his way to the final, where he met Bagshaw. Sonny must have been a little tired as he took a nap on the line, and his Low ET and Top Speed run of 9.10/150.01 lost to Bill's 9.21/145. He was at Bonneville Raceway for the NHRA Division Seven final in August. Sonny reached the final against Kevin Rotty only to foul away a 9.60/141.51 (Top Speed), while Rotty picked up the win with a 9.58/141. The Ontario 9.117/150.00 numbers were his best NHRA national event times of the year. |

Notes: Bryant was at Beeline in January for the AHRA Winternationals, but he lost early in eliminations. He qualified #12 at NHRA Pomona at 9.093/150.75 but lost to Dave Kanners in round one, 8.920/153.32 to 9.099/151.26. Sonny was at OCIR for the AHRA Grand American West on March 16. He qualified #3 in the sixteen-car field with a 9.01 but fell off to 10.44 in the first round, and lost to Lee Hunter's 9.15. At the second NHRA Division Seven race held at Irwindale, he ran 9.03/151.51 to advance in round one. But in the semifinal, he and Kevin Rotty had a close race that saw them both run 9.30. Unfortunately, Rotty got the "win" light. Bryant did set Top Speed on the run at 152.28. Sonny won the PDA Championships at OCIR in late July 1975, running 8.94/151.51 to 9.06/150.75 over Gordie Rivera in the final. He had earlier set Low ET at 8.91. Sonny was the low qualifier at Bonneville WCS in August 1975 at 9.401. At the NHRA World Finals, Sonny qualified #10 at 9.021/151.00. He lost to Bill Jenkins in the first round, 9.380/149.00, to a shut-off 13-second pass. |

He lost to a holeshot by Larry Lombardo in the first round, when his 8.77/152 fell to Larry's 8.80/154. On April 2, he was at Fremont for the NHRA Division Seven race. He qualified #1 for the eight-car field with an 8.59/155.70. He improved to an 8.57 (Low ET) in the opening round of eliminations to beat Randy Humphrey. His consistent 8.59/156.79 beat Kevin Rotty's 8.74/150 in the semifinal. He faced Lee Hunter in the final, and Hunter had been running 8.7's all day. So it looked like he had this race in the bag. But Bryant slowed in the final as both cars ran 8.75 with the win light coming on in Hunter's lane. At the NHRA Cajun Nationals, his 8.73/159.17 qualified on the "bump" for the eight-car field. A first-round 8.74/155.17 upset "Dyno Don" Nicholson's 8.89/152. But in the semifinals, both he and his opponent, Lee Shepherd, ran 8.84 (Bryant at 153.32), and Lee got to the stripe first. Bryant was at Tulsa on May 7 for the AHRA Springnationals. He qualified #3 in the eight-car field with a 9.04/149.25. He sure improved on that time in the first round, where his 8.79/153.84 beat Kenny Hilger's little Chevette at 9.10/149. His 8.83/151.07 advanced when opponent Shepherd blew a transmission in the semifinals. He faced the similar big block Camaro of Warren Johnson in the final, and there was no stopping Sonny on this day as his final round 8.88/156.23 (Top Speed) scored the victory over WJ's 8.99/155. He was runner-up to Rotty again at the NHRA Division 7 race at OCIR. Sonny qualified #1 at 8.67/156.52. An even better 8.62 (Low ET) at 156.52 stopped Larry Johnson's 8.88/152 in round one. In the semifinals, Randy Humphrey's 8.75/156 could do nothing to stop Bryant's 8.64/157.32. He faced Rotty in the final, and despite running 8.62/157.06, he lost to Kevin's quicker-leaving 8.77/159. Bryant did not race at Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals. He was at Sacramento on June 18 for the NHRA Division seven race. An 8.64/155.45 qualified #2. He then ran 8.61/156.23 over a fouling Hunter in round one, and an 8.62/155.98 in the semifinals stopped Gary Hansen's 8.80/151. He ran his best time of the weekend, an 8.59 at 156.26, to win over over Mark Yuill's 8.75/153. He also won the fourth NHRA Division Seven race held at Bonneville. An opening round 9.05/145.64 beat Tom Chelbana and a 9.03/146.11 beat Hansen in the semis. In the final, he set Low ET with a 9.01 at 146.35, winning when Rotty fouled against him. Earlier, during qualifying, he had also set Top Speed at 149.01. He did not race at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals or Canada for the NHRA Grandnationals. The final Division 7 race was run at Beeline Dragway in August. Sonny ran 8.93 to qualify #3. He lowered that time by a tenth in the first round, where his 8.83/150.00 beat Chelbana. A semifinal 8.84/150.75 trailered Hunter's 9.01/149 and moved him into the final for another Rotty vs. Bryant showdown. This time, Sonny held the upper hand, and his final 8.89/151.51 beat Kevin's 8.91/153. He qualified #10 at Ontario for the NHRA World Finals with an 8.79/154.37, but his 8.82/153.84 in the first round, lost to Lombardo's 8.72/155. The best NHRA times were 8.660 at Seattle and 155.97 at Pomona Winters. |

Notes: Bryant was at Tucson for the AHRA Winternationals. He lasted until the semifinals before his 9.12/151.26 lost to eventual winner Don Nicholson's 9.07/150. At Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, his 8.73/155.70 qualified #7. An opening round 8.67/155.17 beat Lee Hunter's 8.88/153, and an 8.68/156.25 advanced when Lee Shepherd broke. In the semifinals, Roy Hill's Arrow broke, and Bryant's 8.64/157.06 advanced. He faced another Arrow in the final. This one was Bob Glidden's. As well as Sonny had been running, there was no stopping Glidden this day as he was running 8.4's. Sure enough, Bob's final round 8.49 got the victory over Bryant's 8.71. At the NHRA Gatornationals, Sonny qualified #5 with an 8.65/158.17. A first-round 8.67/156.52 beat Billy Wash, but in round two, he fouled away an 8.73/156.52 against Glidden, who ran 8.55/149. |
