Notes: Ran 8.90/153.84 at Englishtown, 8.99/153.06 at Indy, 154.10 National Record at Pomona Winters, 8.83/154.90 National Records at Beech Bend WCS, and 8.811 National Record at 74 World Finals (at 154.63). Ran 154.37 at Sanair. | Bob started the '74 season the right way, by winning the AHRA Winternationals at Beeline in January He qualified #1 with an 8.89/154.90 (speed was tops for the race and a new AHRA record), and in the first round, beat Joe Satmary with an even quicker 8.88/153.58. In the second round, his 8.91/152.80 beat Ken Dondero's 9.10/152 in Don Nicholson's Pinto. In the semifinals, Bob's 8.94/153.84 beat Wayne Gapp's 9.03/151. In the final, he met up with Bill Jenkins in his Vega. Glidden got the holeshot and his 8.93/152.08 beat Jenkins' Low ET of the meet effort of 8.85/154. At Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, once again Bob qualified #1 with an 8.94/154.10 (Top Speed). He beat Dave Kanners Hornet in the first round, with a 9.04/152.80. In round two, he took out the other AMC entry, Wally Booth's Hornet, with a 9.01/152.80, but in the semifinals, he faced off against Jenkins again. This time Bill set Low ET of the meet with an 8.91/153 to beat Bob's 9.09/143.76. The next big event was the NHRA Gatornationals. Bob never really did very well at this race and in '74 it was no different. He qualified #9 with a 9.09 setting up a first-round meeting with low qualifier Gapp. In that race, Glidden had transmission problems and lost to Wayne's 9.19. Indianapolis hosted the NHRA Division 3 Opener in May and Bob was one of three Pro Stock cars to qualify in the "eights." His 8.97 qualified #2 behind Bobby Yowell's 8.92 in Billy Stepp's Dodge. Yowell went on to dominate this race, setting Low ET and Top Speed along the way. Glidden was at National Trail in June for the NHRA Springnationals. He qualified #2 with a 9.06/153.06 (Top Speed). A 9.18/141.77 beat Gapp's 9.29/145 in round one, while a 9.12/152.28 advanced past a fouling Scott Shafiroff in round two. In the semifinals, he beat Joe Satmary's Camaro with a 9.10/152.28, putting him in the final against Roy Hill. Hill's best of eliminations was 9.26 so in the final he gambled on the 'tree and lost. Bob got the victory with a 9.11/153.06. The following week (June 16), he was at Bristol for the IHRA Springnationals. He qualified #1 with a 9.03/151.77 (Low ET and Top Speed). He beat Jerry Miller in the "Jeg's" Pinto in the first round, with a 9.19/149.00, but in round two, Reid Whisnant pulled a holeshot and his 9.20/148 beat Bob's quicker, but later 9.17/147.78. Maple Grove hosted a big sixteen-car Pro Stock race in June and Bob was there. He ran a 9.08/150.75 in the first round, but in round two he fouled against Kanners. Glidden won the NHRA 1/8 Mile Drags at Kentucky. A 5.80 in the final beat Satmary's 5.92. He ended the month of June with a runner-up finish to Gapp at the IHRA Northern Nationals on June 30. Glidden set Low ET and Top Speed while qualifying #1 at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals with an 8.90/153.84. He beat alternate Charlie Castaldo in round one, with a 9.02, but in the second round, both he and opponent Larry Lombardo in Bill Jenkins' Vega ran 9.13 with Larry getting the win light. Maryland International held the Pro Stock Open and Bob qualified #2 in the sixteen-car field. He won his first-round race over Hill and in the second round his 8.95/153.94 (Top Speed) advanced to the semifinals when Shafiroff's Vega broke. Unfortunately, the race never finished as rain interrupted the proceedings before the semifinals. Bob followed the NHRA tour into Canada for the Grandnationals in early August. He qualified #4 with an 8.96/154.37 (Top Speed). In the first round, he beat Sam Gianino with an 8.97/152.81. In round two, he improved to an 8.92 over Richie Zul's 9.10. He quickened his pace again in the semifinals when his 8.90/153.58 stopped Booth's Hornet at 9.09. In the final, he faced Gapp in his four-door Maverick. Wayne was no slouch as he had reset the NHRA Pro Stock record in qualifying with an 8.86. Sure enough, in the final, Wayne's Maverick got the win with an 8.90/145 over Bob's 9.01/153.32. At the third NHRA Division 3 race at Tri-City, Yowell won again, but Glidden set Low ET and Top Speed at 9.02/151.51 before slowing to a 9.25/136.15 in the final that lost to Bobby's 9.09/149. Bob got his biggest win of the year at Indianapolis for the NHRA US Nationals on September 2. He was fighting hard against Ford "teammates" that were running the long wheelbase cars for a better weight break. Bob qualified #2 at Indy with an 8.99/153.06 between two of the long wheelbase cars, Gapp at 8.95 and Don Nicholson at 9.01 in his "new" '70 Mustang. At the end of round two (32 car field) most of the "heavy hitters" were left. In round three, Bob's 8.99/153.06 beat Booth's quicker 8.96/150. In the semifinals, he won on another holeshot as his 9.00/151.77 beat Kanners' quicker 8.97/151. This put him in the final against Nicholson who had lane choice due to an 8.96 in the semifinal. But in the final, "Dyno" fouled away a 9.01/151 while Glidden grabbed his second Nationals victory with a 9.01/151. It would have been a close race! Bob won the Supernationals at Ontario over Wayne Gapp, running a new record 8.811 at 154.63. Those were his best NHRA national event times of the year.

Notes: Photo of car in C/G trim. | Bob Glidden ran his "new" '70 Mustang at both the AHRA and NHRA Winternationals (winning both), but at the IHRA Winternationals at Miami-Hollywood, he was running his "trusty" Pinto. It turned out pretty well for him. He qualified #1 for the eight-car field with an 8.73 and then ran a best of 8.70 during eliminations to reach the final against Wayne Gapp who had also switched from his 4-door Maverick to a Pinto for this race. Gapp had also been running 8 70s so it was going to be a good final. Unfortunately, Glidden got out of shape in the final and had to shut off while Gapp ran 8.70 for the victory. Bob then switched back to his '70 Mustang to win the NHRA Gatornationals. After that, he had all kinds of problems attempting to sort out his new Mustang II. He switched back and forth between the two Mustangs and the Pinto sat. In July, the car was sold to Clyde Brandon and Gene Turnage. In the meantime, he bought Lou Oleynik's "Hauler" Mustang II that had been driven by Herb McCandless. The '70 Mustang was also sold to Larry Sengstack. With all the car shuffling supposedly out of the way, he concentrated on the new Mustang II. He did alright with the car, winning the fourth NHRA Division 3 race, but it didn't respond to changes as well as some of his other cars. The wins were definitely not coming like they were earlier in the year. So, after the NHRA US Nationals, he borrowed back the Pinto he had sold to Brandon and Turnage and ran it at the final NHRA Division 3 race at Bowling Green. It proved to be a wise decision as he had been in a slump and his points lead had dwindled. This car most likely gave him his NHRA Championship. At the Bowling Green event, he qualified #2 in the eight-car field with an 8.85 behind Gapp's Maverick at 8.80. Bob improved to an 8.82/154.10 in the opening round over a fouling Norm Paddack. In the semifinal, Sam Gianino also fouled against him and his 8.88/154.10 moved into a final round showdown with Gapp. It was a close race, but Bob's 8.90/154.63 (Top Speed) got the win over the Maverick's close 8.91/153. A deal was struck between Glidden and Brandon & Turnage and Bob continued to use the car for the rest of the year. At the NHRA Fallnationals, the car still ran with the Brandon and Turnage lettering. Bob really showed them there. He reset both ends of the NHRA National record to 8.72/156.25 in qualifying #1. Only fifteen cars showed for the sixteen-car field so he made an "odd-lot" solo in round one, and ran 8.87/152.58. A second round 8.95/153.84 beat Gary Coe and in the semifinals, Ken Dondero's 8.93/152 in Bill Jenkins' Monza fell to Glidden's 8.87/154.90. It was another Gapp vs.5 Glidden final and like all their finals, it was close. Glidden’s 8.84/155.44 got the win over Gapp's 8.85/153.

Notes: Bob built this 1970 Mustang to take advantage of a weight break for longer wheelbase machines. Set National Record at Pomona Winters at 8.772, then Gainesville at 8.76. The 156.25 was Top Speed of the meet at the Winters. Won Winters with a holeshot 8.79 over Wayne Gapp's 8.78. | After watching the success Gapp and Roush were having with their four-door Maverick, Bob had Don Hardy build him this '70 Mustang for '75. The Mustang was allowed to weigh less than the Pinto due to the NHRA weight breaks for long-wheelbase cars. The first time out for the car was at Beeline for the AHRA Winternationals. Bob set Low ET and Top Speed in qualifying #1 with an 8.96/153.84. He then beat Dick Landy in the first round, with an 8.97, followed by a solo 9.29 in round two when Don Nicholson shut off on the line. In the semifinals, a 9.02/150.50 took care of Kevin Rotty. In the final, he faced Wally Booth's Hornet. Booth was off by more than a tenth in eliminations, and it stayed that way in the final. Glidden's 8.99/152.28 beat Wally's 9.12/149. It was a great debut, but it was about to get better. Glidden and family towed to Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, where he qualified #2 with an 8.82/154.37 behind Wayne Gapp's "Taxi" at 8.81/154. These two would work their way to the final. Bob beat Pete Kost in the first round with an 8.772/156.25. The ET was a new NHRA record. In round two, he backed it up with an 8.781/153.32 over Nicholson's similar '70 Mustang. A semifinal 8.821/153.84 took out Dave Kanners' 8.90. The two long-wheelbase Fords came to the final, and Bob got a slight holeshot, and his 8.797/154.10 held on for the win over Gapp's 8.781/154. At the IHRA Winternationals, Glidden used his Pinto as IHRA did not have a different weight break for long or short-wheelbase cars. Glidden made it three event wins in a row for the new car when he won the NHRA Gatornationals. He set a new NHRA ET record of 8.760 in qualifying. His speed on the run was 154.63 (Top Speed). Gapp qualified #2, and these two again would work their way into the final. Bob beat Mike Fons' Mopar in the first round, with an 8.96, while a second round 8.86 advanced when Bobby Yowell fouled. In the semifinals, Larry Lombardo, driving Bill Jenkins' Vega, fouled away an 8.89/153, while Glidden sailed into the final with an 8.97/151.77. Bob got a great light in the final while Gapp was late, and Glidden got the victory with an 8.96/152.80 over the Maverick's quicker 8.89 at the same speed. During April, Glidden also debuted a new Mustang II. He had a lot of bad luck with the car and ended up crashing it at Columbus. He was OK, but the car was severely damaged. Because of this, Bob was at the NHRA Division 3 Opener at Indianapolis on April 20 with the '70 Mustang. He set Low ET in qualifying #1 with an 8.72. He also set Top Speed and won the event, beating Floyd Williams in the final. Bob ran the car at the NHRA Springnationals on June 8. He qualified #4 with a 9.02/150.25. Bob's 8.94/151.77 beat Lee Edwards' Camaro in the first round. In round two, he fell off to 9.34 and lost to Roy Hill's 9.13. He was alternating cars as he used a Mustang II at Bristol for the IHRA Springnationals, yet the following week (June 29), he was back in the '70 Mustang for the third NHRA Division 3 race at Edgewater. He set Low ET in qualifying #1 with an 8.86, and in round one, he also got Top Speed honors with an 8.88/153.58 drubbing of Charlie Reed's 9.18/145. A semifinal 8.90/150.25 beat Stacy Shields' Mustang II and moved Glidden into the final against Sam Gianino. Unfortunately for Bob, the car broke, and Gianino soloed for the win. It was hard to follow Glidden's cars in '75 as he then used the Mustang II at Union Grove for the IHRA Summernationals. I believe the last race Bob used the car at was the NHRA Summernationals at Englishtown. He blew up an engine during qualifying on Saturday but put a new one in and ran 8.99/153.06 to qualify #7. It was really surprising that he fouled away an 8.97/152.54 against Bert Straus in the opening round. Shortly after this, Bob sold the car to Larry Sengstack.

Notes: Swept both IHRA races at Bristol in 76. Won Springs with an 8.68 at 154.63, then won the All Americans at Bristol with an 8.65 at 156.25. Set National Record at 156.25 at NHRA Gators. Ran 155.44 at NHRA Pomona Winters. | Bob was not happy with the NHRA's Pro Stock weight breaks for '76. The 351 powered Fords were carrying a lot more weight compared to the '75 season. More weight meant more breakage of parts. Glidden started the season at the Phoenix Winter Classic on January 25. He qualified #2 with an 8.90 and lasted until the second round before losing to Wayne Gapp's four-door Maverick. At Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, these two would meet again only this time in the final. Bob qualified #3 with an 8.80 and he beat Wally Booth and Roy Hill in the first two rounds. In the semifinals, he came up against low-qualifier Bill Jenkins. Bob got a bit of luck when Jenkins fouled away an 8.77/153 while Glidden advanced with an 8.86/155.70. Gapp and Glidden met in their ninth NHRA final. Glidden got his ninth NHRA National event victory with an 8.82/155.70 beating Wayne's 8.91/153. At the NHRA Gatornationals, an 8.78 qualified #3. He scored an easy first-round win and then beat Lee Edwards in the second round with an 8.87/154.63. In the semifinals, he met Jenkins' Monza again, only this time it was Larry Lombardo behind the wheel. Bob tried hard, but his 8.83 was no match for the Monza's 8.74. He did leave with a new NHRA speed record of 156.52. At the NHRA Springnationals, he qualified #4 and in the first round, his 8.89/152.28 beat Shelby Jester in Andy White's Monza. An 8.92/152.02 beat Bob Ingles' 9.12/147 in round two while another 8.92 at 153 lost to Warren Johnson's 8.83/153 in the semifinals. While Bob wasn't happy with the NHRA side of things he was dominating on the IHRA circuit. The NHRA tour was at Englishtown for the Summernationals in July. Glidden's 8.77 qualified #7. He made it into the second round where his 8.87 lost to Wally Booth's 8.73. Best NHRA ET was 8.772 at the Summers.

Notes: Set National Record ET at Fallnationals at 8.50. Low qualifier at World Finals at 8.61. Ran 8.550/157 at World Finals, defeating newly crowned world champion Don Nicholson in the final. Ran 8.72 at Pomona, 8.81 at Gainesville, 8.72 at Columbus, 8.64 at Englishtown, 8.63 at Indy, and 8.55 at Beech Bend. | Bob started the '77 season at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, where he ran 8.72/156.52 to qualify #3. He beat Mark Yuill in the first round, and in round two, he advanced when Randy Humphrey fouled. In the semifinals, he faced low qualifier Don Nicholson. "Dyno" grabbed a slight holeshot, and his 8.73/156 held on for the win over Bob's slightly quicker 8.72/157.89. At the NHRA Gatornationals, he qualified #4 with an 8.81. He lasted until the second round, where the Pinto broke on its burnout, giving Ken Dondero a solo into the semifinals. On April 24, he won the NHRA Division 3 race at Indianapolis. He stopped Wally Booth in the final with an 8.67/155.44 (Low ET and Top Speed). Glidden won the next Division 3 race held at Edgewater as well. He qualified #1 with an 8.68 and set Low ET and Top Speed with an 8.67/157.89. He beat Joe Satmary in the final. NHRA held its second annual Cajun Nationals at Baton Rouge, and once again, Glidden qualified #1 in the eight-car field with an 8.62/155.70. He got the "odd-lot" single in the first round and ran 8.70/156.79 (Top Speed). In the semifinals, an 8.64/156.79 beat Frank Iaconio, setting up a final-round meeting with Booth's AMC. In the final, Bob's 8.65/156.52 easily covered Wally's 8.73/153. It was his first NHRA National event win since the '76 Winternationals. A week after that (June 12), he was at Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals. An 8.72 qualified #5, but he lost early. At Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals, Glidden just barely out-qualified Nicholson for the pole as both ran 8.64. Glidden beat Warren Johnson in round one, with an 8.68/156, but in round two, he had problems and slowed to 9.08/121 in a loss to Larry Lombardo's 8.66/156 in Bill Jenkins' Monza. He ended July with a win at the fourth NHRA Division 3 race held at Byron. He set Low ET and Top Speed in the final with an 8.69/155 that beat Satmary's Camaro at 8.91/152. He then followed the NHRA tour to Canada for the Grandnationals. He set Low ET and Top Speed in qualifying #1 for the eight-car field with an 8.58/156.79. An opening round 8.65 beat Iaconio's 8.79, and in the semifinals, he beat Booth's 8.68/153 with an 8.63/155.70. He faced Lombardo in the final. Larry had run a quicker 8.62 in his semifinal race, so it was close. But the Monza had problems in the final and slowed to 10.12/93 while Glidden chalked up another victory with an 8.63/156.52. Shortly after that (August 21), he was at Beech Bend for the final NHRA Division Three race. Bob set Low ET and Top Speed in qualifying #1 with an 8.55/157.34. He worked his way into the final, where he faced Dave Avery. It wasn't much of a contest as Bob's 8.69/154.90 easily took the victory over Dave's 9.36/148. Then came the NHRA US Nationals at Indy. Bob wasn't pleased with this race during qualifying. He watched as Nicholson unloaded and proceeded to run an 8.61 with his "good" engine and then come back on Saturday to run 8.63 with a backup! Glidden did not want to be second. He made runs of 8.80, 8.72, 8.88, and finally, 8.67. But that was the closest he, or anyone else, could get to "Dyno." On race day, an opening-round 8.84/149 topped Bob ingles' 9.05/151. In round two, he improved to 8.63/156 to beat Richie Zul's 9.25/153. Another strong pass of 8.65/156.79 beat Frank Iaconio's 8.89/152 in the semis. That set up an all-Ford final with "Dyno." Don's winning semifinal time had been 8.72/155, so Bob now looked to have the edge. But in the final, the Pinto broke just off the line, slowing to 13.99, while Nicholson's 8.73 picked up the victory. We need validation of the third digit of the 8.50 at Seattle.

Notes: Glidden debuted this car at Edgewater on July 9 for the NHRA Division 3 Points race. The unique machine replaced Bob's Pinto, in which he began the season. It was a promising debut, as he scored 8.76/152.54 to qualify #2 behind Joe Satmary's 8.75/154. An improved 8.66/154.90 in the opening round of eliminations beat Phil Gingerich, while a semifinal 8.68/153.58 handled Dave Avery. Bob faced Satmary in the final, and his 8.65 (Low ET) at 154.10 beat Joe's 8.75/153. A week later (July 16), he was at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals, where he scored his sixteenth NHRA National Event victory. He qualified #1 with an 8.62/154.90 and then ran 8.58/148.02 in the first round to beat Dempsey Hardy's 8.80/153. An 8.535 (Low ET) in round two at 152.54 beat Richie Zul's 8.66/156. That was the quickest side-by-side race in history at that point. An 8.55/149.00 in the semifinals beat Wally Booth's 8.70/154. In the final, he met up with Bill Jenkins' Monza, driven by Larry Lombardo. Bob got the win with an 8.55/154.37 over Larry's 8.71/155. It was also interesting to note that this was his tenth straight NHRA final-round appearance. That was followed by a trip to Maryland International for its US Pro Stock Open event. It was an eight-car show, and Glidden's 8.66 qualified #1. An even better 8.64 in round one beat Satmary's 8.84, but Zul cut a great light in the semifinals, and his 8.80 hung on to win over Bob's quicker 8.66. On July 30, Glidden went to the final NHRA Division Two race at Miami-Hollywood. His 8.69/152.80 advanced in the opening round when Art Gravatt fouled. A semifinal 8.71/153.58 beat Jim Kinnett's 8.95/154. He faced Dempsey Hardy in the final, and Bob made winning look easy as he set Low ET with an 8.65/154.32, scoring the victory over Hardy's 8.84/154. Then it was off to Canada for the NHRA Grandnationals. Of course, he qualified #1, this time with an 8.585 at only 148.51. The field was short a car, so Bob got the "odd-lot" solo and ran another 8.58 at only 151.26 to advance. Frank Iaconio's 8.73/154 fell to the Fairmont's 8.55 at only 149. He faced Larry Lombardo, driving Bill Jenkins' Monza in the final. "Grumpy" had been taking shots at Bob for his new Fairmont, calling it down. So Glidden really enjoyed beating Larry's 8.72/166 in the final, with another 8.550 (Low ET) at a shutting-off way early 144.46! He did that just to bug Jenkins a bit. By now, the big white "boxcar" was bugging everyone as it was proving itself unbeatable. His next stop came at Martin, Michigan, for the PHR Championships. He set Low ET of the meet in qualifying #1 for the sixteen-car field with an 8.68. Round one saw his 8.72/155.70 beat Joe Gouger's 9.06/142. Warren Johnson fouled away an 8.76/154 against him in round two, and Bob advanced with an 8.72/157.61 (Top Speed). He made like a bracket racer in the semifinals, where he ran his third straight 8.72 (at 156.52) to beat Satmary's 8.80/154. Once again, he faced Lombardo in the final, and once again, the results were the same. Bob's 8.74/152.54 got the victory over Larry's far behind 8.89/153. The domination continued at the final NHRA Division Three race at Beech Bend. Bob ran 8.68/158.17 (Top Speed) and 8.64/168.17 to beat Avery and Gouger in eliminations. He went up against Satmary in the final. Joe took a chance and fouled away an 8.74/154, while Glidden notched another win with his 8.64 at only 145.39. Before Indy, Glidden was awarded the "Pro Stock Driver of the Year" by Car Craft Magazine. Bob was the low qualifier at Indy at 8.622/157.61, finally showing some top end. he beat a fouling Dempsey Hardy in round one, 8.648/153.84 to 8.78/154. In round two, Bob took out Mark Yuill, 8.606/154.37 to 8.81/154. Frank Iaconio gave it a good shot against Bob in the semis but was a tenth behind his Low ET pass of 8.600/153.84 to 8.70/155. In the final, Joe Satmary's 8.77/155 finished more than two car lengths back. In Seattle, Bob ran even quicker. He qualified #1 at 8.557/155.70. In round one, his 8.52/154.34 beat Brad Yuill's 8.75 (speed unknown). Bob ran 8.52/157.34 to beat Wally Booth's 8.67/153 in round two. Lee Shepherd fouled against him in the semis, but Bob ran 8.555/152.54 to Lee's 8.70/154 anyway. In the final, Bob set the Low ET and Top Speed of the Meet at 8.499/158.52 to beat Frank Iaconio's game 8.57/155. Bob wrapped up his dream season at Ontario for the World Finals. An 8.556/156.79 was the low qualifier, and he commenced race day with an 8.610/153.32 to 8.78/154 win over Andy Mannarino. An 8.635/156.25 took out Warren Johnson's 8.82/155 in round two, and an 8.587/157.06 beat Wally Booth's off-pace pas in the semis. That speed tied for Top Speed of the Meet, which was awarded to Mark Yuill, who had run the number in qualifying. In the final, Bob again defeated Larry Lombardo, 8.617/156.25 to 8.74/155. What a season! Every other Pro Stock racer was scared of this car. Bob was running 8.4s while shutting down early! That was unheard of. People were speculating that if he ran it out the back door, it would have run over 160. Bob won the NHRA Championship.
