Notes: Former Butch Leal California Flash powered by a destroked Hemi. Bliss was at LaPlace on March 19 for the NHRA Division Four opener. He qualified #3 in the eight-car field with an 8.77/158.45. The car came up ailing in the first round, and his 9.86/151.51 lost to the only other Mopar in the show, Phil Nichols. The next Division Four race was held at Green Valley Raceway on April 16. Once again, he qualified #3, but this time with an 8.80/155.97. In the opening round of eliminations, his 8.90/153.32 beat Shelby Jester's 9.08/135. But in the semifinals, eventual winner Lee Shepherd stopped his 8.95 with an 8.67. Cork won the August 1978 Division 4 Points Meet at State Capitol Raceway in Baton Rouge over none other than Lee Shepherd!

Notes: Qualified fifth at NHRA Ontario 11/21/70 at 10.023/138.03 (the quickest Chevy behind three Chryslers and Nicholson's Ford). | Next to Bill Jenkins, this had to be the strongest Chevy Pro Stocker in '70. He started the season at Beeline for the AHRA Winternationals, he was the quickest Chevy qualifier at 10.26, but he lost to Mike Fons in round two. This was the only AHRA race he ran this season. Things went much better at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. There he qualified #3 behind Ronnie Sox and Jenkins with a 10.09/138.88. He made it into the semifinals before losing to Sox. The following week, he was at OCIR for the US Pro Stock Championships. It was a sixteen-car show. An opening round 10.02/137.61 advanced, and in the second round, he got around a fouling Sox, but it cost him a clutch. After replacing it, he faced Jenkins in the semifinal. The two had a good race, but Bill had a bit more power as his 9.95/139 beat Booth's 10.09/137.19. He seemed to be down on power at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals. His best of 10.25 only qualified #14 in the field, and in round one, he lost to Dick Humbert. At the NHRA Division 3 race at National Trail on May 3, he finished runner-up to Arlen Vanke. He fouled away a 10.20 in the final, and Vanke won with a 10.27. He got a big win the following week (May 10) at York US 30 for the Super Stock Nationals. He reached the finals by running 10.00/137.14 and 9.97 twice to meet Sox in the final. Sox had run a best of 9.86 and looked like he was on his way to another victory. In the run for the money, Wally left on Sox, and his 10.00/136.77 beat Ronnie's quicker 9.95/138. He was the quickest non-Mopar qualifier at the NHRA Springnationals at Dallas, where his 10.12 qualified #4. A 10.20 advanced past round one, while in round two, Don Grotheer fouled against him. In round three (32 car field), Dick Humbert fouled against him, and Booth moved into the semifinals. There he faced Lee Smith's 'Cuda. Lee missed a shift, and Wally's 10.28 moved into the final against Sox again. It wasn't much of a race as Wally blew the clutch while Sox ran 10.02/136 for the victory. Martin, Michigan's US 131, held a Pro Stock event in early July. The two lowest ET cars would meet in the final. In the first round, Booth faced Jenkins in an all-Camaro battle. Bill's 10.11/136 beat his 10.33/134.52. He ran 10.09/135.13 on a solo pass in round two when Larry Griffith's Dart failed to start. In his third race, his 10.19/135.33 beat a wheelstanding Vanke at 10.28/135. Unfortunately, none of his ET's were quick enough for him to make the final. He was the quickest Chevy qualifier at the NHRA Summernationals, where his 10.16/135.74 qualified #11. He lost to eventual winner Dick Landy's 10.08/136 in the first round, with a 10.18/137.61. On August 2, he was at Tri-City for the fourth NHRA Division 3 race. He made it past a fouling Bobby Yowell in the semifinals to run Vanke in the final. It was a close race, but Arlen's 10.08 beat Booth's 10.09/135.54 for the victory. At Indy for the NHRA US Nationals, Booth qualified #16 in the 32-car field with a 10.13/135.74. He improved to 10.11 in the first round, over Joe Thompson's Dart, but a second Round 10.16 lost to eventual winner Herb McCandless' 10.09. The NHRA Division 3 final was held at Bluegrass Dragway on September 20. Wally faced Vanke in the first round, and fouled.

Notes: According to NHRA lists, Wally ran a 1970 Camaro at Pomona and Gainesville, and then came out with the 1969 Camaro at Englishtown. He qualified #15 at E-town at 9.898/136.93, then ran 9.96 and 9.92 in eliminations. He qualified #21 at Indy 1971 at 9.901/138.00, and improved to 9.82 in eliminations (loss to Don Carlton). That was Wally’s last NHRA national event of the season. Ran 9.92 and 9.95 at 140.18 at Englishtown show against Landy.

Notes: Wally started the season in a 1970 Camaro (according to NHRA qualifying lists). We need to confirm - Pomona and Gators. Came out with the 1969 car at NHRA Englishtown, according to our records. Finished runner-up to Ronnie Sox at Pomona and lost to Sox in the semis at Gainesville. Also ran 9.96 at IHRA Bristol in the 70 car. | On May 9, he was at the Super Stock Magazine Nationals. He ran an opening round 10.03 to beat Sam Auxier's 10.26, but the Camaro broke and could not return for round two. Late in May, Booth was at Englishtown for a best of three match race against Dick Landy. In their first race, Landy's 9.93/142.40 beat Wally's track record 9.92 at 139.96. In the second race, Dick crossed the centerline, and Booth evened the score with a winning 10.69/124.82. Landy's Challenger had broken a rear spring and could not compete in the last race, so Wally ran a local car and turned 9.95/140.18 to win the match. At Bristol'for the IHRA Springnationals, Booth lost to Don Carlton in the first round.

Notes: No one expected Chevy man Wally Booth to be behind the wheel of an AMC in '72. The car was built using the stock frame rails tied together with square tubing. It used Pinto rack and pinion steering as well as a Dana rear with 5.57 gears. A very rare A/FX Ford aluminum radiator was also used. The engines were built by Dick Arons and Booth and displaced between 340 and 350 cubic inches. The transmission was a four-speed Borg-Warner Super T-10. | Wally opened many people's eyes when he won the NHRA Division 3 Opener at Indianapolis on April 30. Some big names were in the field, such as Mike Fons and Arlen Vanke, who qualified one-two. Booth’s final round times were 9.82/135.73. He was at Capitol for the USRT race, where he ran a 9.90 to qualify #10. Unfortunately, an opening-round 9.92/137.49 lost to Ken Dondero driving Don Nicholson's Maverick. At the second NHRA Division 3 race held at National Trail, he again reached the final, but this time had to settle for runner-up honors as Vanke's 10.09 beat his off pace 10.49. Early in June, he ran at the IHRA Longhorn Nationals at Dallas. Wally’s 9.73 qualified #8, and in round one, his 9.82/137 beat Clester Andrews. He lucked out in round two as Butch Leal had transmission trouble and was unable to run. Booth singled with a 9.76. He ran a strong 9.74/137.00 in the semifinals, but it wasn't enough to stop Ronnie Sox's 9.61/142. A week later, he was back at National Trail for the NHRA Springnationals. The little Gremlin qualified #8 with a 9.81, but it fell off to a 10.03/138.24 in the first round, losing to Carmen Rotonda's 9.82/139. By July, the car was getting much stronger, as shown by the following races. At the USRT race held at York US 30, Wally qualified with a 9.61/140.84. He improved to 9.60 at 140.18 in the first round, but lost to Don Grotheer's 9.48/146. The USRT cars ran at NHRA legal weight, but they allowed the use of rosin. He didn't run that well at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals, where he qualified #17 and his 9.82/136.77 lost to eventual winner Bill Jenkins' 9.40/144 in round one. A few days later, he was at Atco for another USRT race. He didn't get far in eliminations, but he qualified with a 9.62/140.62. Milan hosted four Pro Stock cars late in the month, and Booth broke into the 9.50s with a 9.57 beating Wayne Gapp's 9.85 in the first race. He ran another 9.57 in his second race but lost to Nicholson, who laid a holeshot on him and beat him with a slower 9.62. Wally’s 9.60/140 lost to Stuart McDade's 9.48/144 in Billy Stepp's car in the final race. He closed out the month with a runner-up finish to Fons at the fourth NHRA Division 3 race at Tri-City. August started with Booth competing at the NHRA Grandnationals in Canada. He qualified #5 in the sixteen-car show with a 9.75. His 9.79/135.13 beat James Cook in the first round, but his second round, 9.82/135.74 lost to Jenkins' 9.42/144. Jenkins would go on to win again. Booth was getting a bit of a following by the time Indy came around for the NHRA US Nationals. Everyone wanted to see the "underdog" do well. At Indy, Booth's 9.76/137.85 qualified #11 for the 32 car field. He lost in the inter-brand rivalry with Rich Maskin, who qualified two spots ahead of him, but Wally lost to Lary Huff in the first round. He then went to Oxford Plains for a scheduled match race against Don Carlton. Don could not show, so Ken Dondero in "Dyno Don's" SOHC Maverick was called in as a last-minute replacement. The "dinosaur" beat the little Gremlin two straight. | Wally also qualified at Indy 1972 with a 9.766/137.65. He qualified the Gremlin #8 at NHRA Ontario with a 9.597/138.67, his best NHRA national event times of 1972. Wally had two shut-off runs in eliminations; the first beat a broken Gordon Collett, but the second lost to Bob Glidden’s 9.73. Formerly listed 9.525/141.95. We need validation of those runs.

Notes: Wally debuted his Hornet in June at the NHRA Springnationals. The car had some teething problems and failed to qualify. By the next NHRA event, the Summernationals at Englishtown, Booth had gotten his Hornet figured out and he ran 9.28/145.63 to qualify #10 in the 32 car show. Not too bad considering almost 50 cars were attempting to qualify. He lasted until round two where his 9.32/144.00 fell to eventual winner Bill Jenkins' 9.02/150. He continued to flog the AMC and on August 1 made it into the final at the USRT event at Englishtown. He did it by beating Ronnie Sox in the semifinals with a 9.22, just nipping Sox's 9.24. Unfortunately, Booth lost to Herb McCandless on the money run. Two days later he was in Canada for the NHRA Grandnationals where he qualified #8 with a 9.24. A 9.31/143.16 beat Canadian Alban Gauthier's 9.61/143 in the first round, but in round two his 9.28/144.00 lost to Bob Glidden's 9.16/149. Also ran 9.22 at Beech Bend. Ran 9.344/145.16 at NHRA Indianapolis IN 9/01/73. Qualified at 9.167 at Ontario and got a first-round win at 9.140 (no speed), but slowed to a 13 second time in round two and lost to Dave Kanners' similar machine.

Notes: Wally started his season at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. He qualified #5 with a 9.03/149.75. A first-round 9.09/150.25 beat Larry Huff's Dodge, but in round two, his 9.11/150.25 lost to Bob Glidden's 9.01/152. In March, AMC informed both Booth and fellow Hornet campaigner Dave Kanners that they were releasing them from their contracts. So when the two teams showed up at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals, both teams had no contracts for the rest of the season. Booth qualified #3 with a 9.05/151.51. An 8.97/152.54 in the first round beat Don Nicholson's 9.03/152, while in round two, his 9.01/152.28 beat Kanners' 9.05/150. In the semifinals, Wally ran 8.95/152.80 to beat Frank Iaconio's 9.05/152. In the final, he faced Jack Roush in the "Gapp & Roush" Mustang II. The Hornet got AMC's first-ever win in Pro Stock at an NHRA national event. Booth ran 8.97/152.80 in the final over Roush's 9.01/152. AMC was so happy with the victory that they renewed their support for the two teams. The timing for the win couldn't have been any better. On March 31, NHRA held its Division 2 Opener at Warner Robins. Wally qualified #1 with a 9.02 and then made his way into the final, where he ran Fred Shafer. Booth took the win by running Low ET and Top Speed with an 8.98/154.10 over Fred's 9.37/146. He also won the Suffolk NHRA Division 2 race in May. He qualified #1 with an 8.93/152.92 and set Low ET in the first round, with an 8.92/152 to beat Lamar Walden's Vega at 9.11. In the semifinals, he beat Roy Hill with another 8.93; in the final, an 8.97 got the victory when Kenny Hahn fouled against him. At National Trail for the NHRA Springnationals, he qualified #1 with a 9.06/150.25. A 9.15/149.00 got around Richie Zul's Camaro in the first round, but his 9.16/148.76 lost to Bobby Yowell in Billy Stepp's Dodge in round two. He won his third NHRA Division 2 race in a row when he beat Reid Whisnant in the final at Blaney. Booth's 9.00 (Low ET) at 149.00 beat Reid's 9.12/148. In mid-July, he was at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals. A 9.05/150.25 qualified #6 in the field. Booth beat Joe Satmary in round one with a 9.13/149.00. In round two, his 9.14/149.75 lost to Wayne Gapp's 9.10/140 in the "Gapp & Roush" four-door Maverick. The little Hornet continued to run stronger as the season progressed, and at the NHRA Grandnationals, he qualified #2 behind Gapp's 8.86 with an 8.940/150.75. He beat the other Hornet of Kanners in the first round with a 9.06/150.50. Another 9.06 in round two topped Tony Christopher's Duster, but in the semifinals, he fell off to a 9.09/149.00 that lost to Glidden's 8.90/153. The next big race was at Indianapolis for the NHRA US Nationals. Booth qualified #6 in the 32-car field with a 9.09, and he lasted until round three, where his 8.96/150.00 lost to Glidden's holeshot aided 8.99/153. He grabbed another Division 2 title when he won the final at Gainesville. Once again, he ran Whisnant in the final, and his 9.08/149.00 beat Reid's off-pace 9.35/147. Wally ran 8.94 at NHRA Sanair 74, 8.92 at Suffolk Dragway 74, 9.03 at Pomona, 9.05 at Englishtown, 9.06 at Columbus, 8.96 at Indy, and 9.03 at Ontario.Photo from the 1974 NHRA Gatornationals, Gainesville, Florida.

Notes: Won 75 IHRA All American Nationals at Bristol. Also 8.83 at Ontario 75. Low qualifier at Indy 1975 at 8.752/152.54. | Booth's season started at Beeline for the AHRA Winternationals. He ran 9.18 in the first round, over Rich Simone's Mustang II and in round two, a 9.17 beat Joe Satmary's 9.27. A 9.11/149.50 wasn't needed in the semifinals when Larry Huff fouled, but it put Booth in the final against Bob Glidden who had debuted his new '70 Mustang. Wally tried hard with a 9.12/149.25, but was still left behind Glidden's 8.99/152. At Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, Booth qualified #5 with an 8.92/151.77. He lasted until the second round before losing to Wayne Gapp's 8.89/154 with an 8.98/152.28. The next NHRA event was the Gatornationals held on March 16. Wally didn't qualify very well as his 8.98 put him in the #11 spot. This set up a first-round meeting with Larry Lombardo that the Hornet lost. During this, Dick Arons was working hard on the cylinder heads, lopping off and sectioning the heads for more power and as the season progressed the results were showing. In April, Wally won the NHRA Division 2 Opener at Warner Robins. He qualified #1 with an 8.95 and went into the final against Reid Whisnant where his 9.05/149.50 beat Reid's 9.06/152. In May he was at Dragway 42 for the AHRA Grandnationals. He qualified #6 in the eight-car show and got around Huff in the first round, before fouling away a 9.03 in the semifinal against Satmary's 9.15. At the NHRA Springnationals, a 9.06/149.00 qualified #7. In the first round, a 9.11/149.25 beat Satmary's 9.19/147. In round two, a 9.09/149.75 lost to Bill Jenkins' 9.03/150. At Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals, he qualified #11 with a 9.07. A first-round 9.06/149.75 lost to the "other" Hornet driver, Dave Kanners, who ran 9.02/150. Wally won the AHRA Drag Nationals at Kansas City on August 3. He beat Fred Shafer's Vega in the first round, with a 9.09 and another 9.09 in the semifinals beat Floyd Williams. In the final, he met Warren Johnson and the Hornet's 9.08/148.51 got the win over the Camaro's 9.13/149. Maryland International hosted the fourth NHRA Division 1 race on August 16, and Wally made it into the final where his 8.97/149.75 finished second best to Gapp's 8.90/147. The following week (August 24), he was at Martin, Michigan, for the PHR Championships. He qualified #6 with an 8.95 and improved to a first-round 8.92 over Paul Davis. Unfortunately, he fouled in round two against Shafer. Booth showed that the cylinder head work was paying off as he set a new NHRA record in qualifying #1 at the US Nationals with an 8.75. He lasted until the semifinals where he fouled away an 8.80 against eventual winner Gapp's 8.87. He then went to Rockingham for the IHRA US Open and proved that his times were no fluke. He qualified #1 with an 8.86 and a first-round 8.85/153.32 beat Charlie Castaldo. In round two, an 8.82/154.10 beat Fred Turner. In the semifinals, he kept the pressure on with another 8.82/153.32 over a fouling Scott Shafiroff. In the final, he was to have faced Lee Edwards' Camaro, but Lee had broken a timing chain in his semifinal run so Booth got to make a solo for the win. What a solo it was, as he ran Low ET and Top Speed with an 8.81/154.37 for the title. It was a strong showing for the little Hornet. At the NHRA Division 2 final at DeSoto Speedway, Wally set Low ET at 8.97, but in the final he decided to take a little nap and his 9.00/150.50 lost to Johnny Dowey's 9.24/145. At the NHRA World Finals, he qualified #3 with an 8.83/152.80, but he lost in the first round.

Notes: Won Beech Bend WCS over Bob Glidden on 8/22/76 at 8.783/153.32. Ran 8.65 at Seattle, 8.68/155.17 at Indy. | This was Wally Booth's dream season in the class. Except for the world championships, he was hard to beat. The cut and welded cylinder heads made the AMCs the cars to beat. Both Booth and AMC stablemate Dave Kanners had their best seasons. It’s funny because Wally was about to give up on his Hornet. He showed up at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals in a Vega. He qualified the car, but lost to Bob Glidden in the opening round. He returned to competition in the Hornet, but it wasn't until April before he got his first win. It came at the second NHRA Division 2 race at DeSoto. It wasn't long after that he was in the final at the NHRA Cajun Nationals at LaPlace Dragway. Booth set Low ET in qualifying with an 8.80, and he reached the final against Lee Shepherd. Wally must have been tired as, after taking a little snooze on the line, he decided to chase down Shepherd for the win. But his 8.88/153.32 was good for the runner-up spot as it wasn't enough to catch Lee, who won with a 9.07/151. He went to Detroit to run the AHRA Grandnationals and came away with another runner-up finish, losing to Ken Dondero in the final. It had been a long dry spell since he had won his last NHRA National event ('74 Gatornationals), but he finally won another at the NHRA Springnationals at National Trail. He qualified #1 with an 8.82 and improved to 8.77/154.63 in the first round, to beat Shepherd's 9.08. He had the lowest ET in round two as well when his 8.84/154.10 took out Richie Zul's 9.04/152. He was to face a surprisingly strong Charlie Reed in the semifinals, but Reed was unable to show, so Wally singled with an 8.78/154.37. He faced #2 qualifier Warren Johnson in the final, and Booth dished up an 8.74 (Low ET) at 154.63 to take the win over WJ's 8.81/156. At Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals, Booth’s 8.69 qualified #2. A first-round 8.76 beat Paul Blevins, and in round two, his 8.73 got around Glidden at 8.87. He ran into the "other" Hornet of Kanners in the semifinals, and Dave's 8.79/154 beat his quicker 8.77/152.80. Best NHRA national event times were 8.627/157.06 low qualifying effort at Sanair.

Notes: Andy lent this car to Wally to compete at the Winters after it looked like Wally would lose his AMC deal. Afterward, the AMC deal came through, so this car went back to Andy. Andy competed at the Gators and into early 1977 with the Vega, but then he and Dick Maskin formed the M&M Boys and sold the Vega to Fred (Shafer?) | BORT AKA Balls Out Racing Team!

Notes: Booth qualified #4 at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals with an 8.72. In the first round, he beat Gary Hansen before losing to a Richie Zul holeshot 8.81 that beat his quicker 8.79 in round two. Wally again qualified well at the NHRA Gatornationals, where he was #2 with an 8.72 behind "Dyno Don" Nicholson's 8.65. He went on to beat Roy Hill and Frank Iaconio in the first two rounds. He blew his engine on an 8.98 winning pass over Ken Dondero's off-pace 9.11 in the "Gapp and Roush" Pinto in the semifinals. He was unable to run in the final, and Nicholson soloed for the victory. Another runner-up finish followed at the NHRA Division 3 race at Indianapolis. There he lost to Bob Glidden in the final. Wally had been in six NHRA National Event finals in '76, so it what somewhat surprising that at the NHRA Cajun Nationals, he was in the last Pro Stock final round of his career. Baton Rouge only had eight-car PRO fields, and Booth's 8.66/156.25 qualified #2 behind Glidden's 8.62. These two would work their way to the final. Wally ran 8.79/154.53 in the opening round to beat Mike North, and a semifinal 8.82/154.37 advanced when Kevin Rotty fouled. In the final, Booth ran well, but his 8.73/153.58 finished runner-up to Glidden's 8.65/156. He set Low ET in qualifying #1 at the NHRA Springnationals with an 8.64. Booth lasted until the semifinals before his 8.78 lost to Nicholson's 8.76. He did win the third NHRA Division 3 race at Martin, Michigan. He also set Low ET and Top Speed there with an 8.71/157.34. Englishtown was NHRA's next stop for the Summernationals. Wally qualified #3 with an 8.70/156.52, but a sleepy 8.62/156 in the opening round lost to Joe Satmary's 8.78/154. He followed the NHRA tour to Canada for the Grandnationals. It was an eight-car field, and Wally's 8.67 qualified #3. He beat Bob Ingles in the first round, but he lost to Glidden in the semis. Shortly after that, he was at Suffolk for the NHRA Division 2 race. An 8.67 qualified #2 just behind Nicholson's 8.66. In round one, he beat Lamar Walden in Barry Setzer's Monza with an 8.80/153.58. But in the semifinals, he was late off the line, and his 8.85/152.05 lost to Ingles' 8.91/151. His next stop was at Indianapolis for the NHRA US Nationals. Wally qualified #8 with an 8.77. A first-round 8.92/150 beat Alban Gauthier, but in round two a late leaving 8.78/151 lost to Iaconio's slower 8.89/152. Wally did not make the long tow to Seattle for the NHRA Fallnationals, but he did go to Ontario Motor Speedway for the NHRA World Finals. An 8.80 qualified #6, but once again, he lost to a holeshot. This time Ronnie Manchester's 8.93 in the first round, stopped his quicker 8.83. In the NHRA season-long points chase, Booth finished sixth. The best NHRA national event speed was 156.79 at E-Town. Ran 8.62/156 at Englishtown 77, but that run lost in Round 1 to a massive Joe Satmary holeshot and an 8.78/154. Ran 8.61/157.34 at US 131 WCS, 8.75 at Pomona, 8.72 at Gainesville, 8.64 at Columbus, 8.62 at Englishtown, 8.77 at Indy, 8.77 at Sanair.

Notes: It was getting near the end for the AMC entries in NHRA Pro Stock competition in '78. But Booth still had a good year and finished ninth in the NHRA Pro Stock year-end standings. At the season-opening Winternationals at Pomona, Wally's 8.82/153 qualified #10. In the first round, he dropped #2 qualifier Warren Johnson with a quick-leaving 8.68/154 that beat Johnson's quicker 8.65/157. But in the second round, against Gordie Rivera, he got crossed up and shut off to a 10.25 loss. At Gainesville, for the NHRA Gatornationals, a strong 8.65/156 qualified the car in the #6 position. An opening round 8.79/156 beat Lee Hunter's 8.85/154, but a second-round 8.70/154 lost to Frank Iaconio's 8.67/155. He ran a strong 8.65 to qualify #3 in the eight-car field at the NHRA Cajun Nationals. In the opening round, his 8.78/155.17 beat Dempsey Hardy's 8.83/154. But in the semifinals, he and Bob Glidden had a great race with Bob's 8.66/156 beating the AMC's close 8.69/155.97. On May 21, he was at Edgewater for the NHRA Division Three race. There he set Low ET and Top Speed at 8.65/156.25. He reached the final against Joe Satmary only to have the car break on the line. Booth could only watch as Satmary ran 8.83/155 for the victory. Booth was the only AMC car in the field at all of those events, but at the Division Three race held at Indianapolis on June 4, their numbers doubled as Andy Mannarino also qualified his AMC for the show. Booth still outqualified Andy with his 8.70/155.44 coming in at the #3 spot compared to Andy's #4 position. Another 8.70/156.79 in the first round, beat Larry Peternel's Mopar at 9.12/150, but he again faced off against Glidden in the semifinals. It was again close with the Ford's 8.67/158 nipping the AMC's 8.68/155.97. Both AMC's showed up for the NHRA Springnationals, and Booth's 8.73/155.44 qualified #6 while Andy's got the #12 spot in the field. But both went down in the first round. Booth's late 8.92/152.80 lost to Don Campanello's 8.96/151. His next stop was at Martin, Michigan, on June 24 for another NHRA Division Three race. Booth qualified #2 with an 8.71/155.44 behind Glidden's pole setting 8.62/158. In round one, Wally's 8.73/154.10 beat Peternel's 9.08. He faced off against the only other competitive AMC car in the semifinals, and his 8.75/154.37 sent Mannarino packing at 8.98/150. The final was against Satmary, with the outcome being a reversal of what had happened at Edgewater earlier in the year. Satmary's Camaro broke on the line, and Wally ran 8.69/154.90 for the victory. The cars were back at Edgewater on July 9 for the NHRA Division 3 race, where he qualified #3 behind Joe Satmary's Camaro and Bob Glidden's new Fairmont with an 8.81. An improved 8.79 took out John Frech, but Satmary got some revenge in the semifinals with his 8.78/153 beating Booth's 8.79/154.37. Both AMC entries qualified at the NHRA Summernationals, with Andy's leading the two by getting the #8 spot while Booth got the #15 position. But Booth surprised Johnson in the first round, running an 8.70/155.17 to beat Warren's 8.80/154. A round two 8.73/153.84 trailered Mark Yuill's quicker 8.67/156, but he came up against Glidden in the semifinals. Bob had been running 8.5s with ease, and despite Booth running another strong 8.70/154.10, he was still almost two-tenths behind Bob, who ran an 8.54/149 (pulling the 'chute early) to advance. He did not follow the NHRA tour to Canada for the Grandnationals or attend the PHR Championships. He was also absent from the final NHRA Division Three race held at Beech Bend. His next national event showing came at Indy for the NHRA US Nationals, where he failed to qualify. He did win the NHRA Country Boy Open at Cumberland International raceway on September 9. It was an eight-car show, and he beat Roy Hill's 9.08/154 in the first round, with an 8.84/152.78 and a semifinal 8.89/151.77 took care of Lamar Walden's 9.33/145. He faced Jim Kinnett in the final, and his 8.84/152.54 got the victory over Jim's 8.89/154. A couple of weeks later, he was in Seattle for the NHRA Fallnationals. He qualified #13 and ran 8.75/154.90 to beat Sonny Bryant's much quicker 8.66/154 in the opening round. But eventual winner Glidden, stopped his advance in round two with an 8.52/157 covering Booth's 8.67/153.84. The best NHRA times were 8.651 at the Cajuns and 156.79 at Gainesville. Wally also ran 8.70/154.10 at Englishtown and 8.68 at Pomona.

Notes: Third alternate at 1979 Winters at 8.82. After failing to qualify at Pomona, Booth really stepped it up at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals. His 8.66/156.79 qualified #7. An opening round 8.71/155.44 beat Tom Owens, but a slowing 9.22/113.78 lost to Mark Yuill's 8.74/153 in round two. At the rain postponed NHRA Cajun Nationals, he lasted until the semifinals, where his 8.81 lost to Lee Shepherd's 8.72. The next stop on the NHRA tour was at Columbus for the Springnationals. Booth's 8.77 qualified #10, and in round one, his 8.86/153.32 lost to Larry Lombardo's 8.76/155 in Bill Jenkins' Camaro. He did not compete at the Mile High Nationals, but he was at Englishtown for the Summernationals, where he qualified #4 with an 8.69. He improved to 8.65 in the first round, and he beat Joe Satmary, and an 8.72 in round two, beat fellow AMC campaigner Andy Mannarino's 8.75. In the semifinals, he lost to eventual winner Frank Iaconio. He ran really well at the PHR Championships held at Martin, Mich. There, he qualified #2 with an 8.71/152.28, and he ran steady 8.7's with an 8.70 best coming in the semifinal with a win over Mark Yuill's 8.74. He went up against Lombardo in the final, and Larry's 8.65/154 got the win over Wally's 8.71/154.63. Wally skipped the NHRA Grandnationals in Canada, but was at Indy for the US Nationals. He qualified #10 with an 8.72/153.58, but he lost to Iaconio in the opening round. He also did not attend the NHRA Fallnationals in Seattle. At the NHRA World Finals at Ontario Motor Speedway, he qualified #7 with an 8.76/153.84. A first-round 8.83/153.06 beat Gary Pugh, but he fouled (8.97/154.10) against Shepherd in round two. He finished fourteenth in NHRA points for '79. This was the last year that he campaigned as he retired from driving after the World Finals.
