Notes: Dave got himself into some hot water with NHRA when he was one of five cars randomly chosen for a pre-race teardown inspection. He told the officials that he had only one gasket set and talked them into postponing the teardown until after eliminations. After he lost in the first round, he told officials that it was senseless to tear the car down now. NHRA responded by telling Dave it was senseless to bring his car to another meet since he was now suspended for a year. #2 qualifier at Indy 1972. Photo from 1972 US Nationals. Ran 9.71 at Suffolk. |

Notes: Melvin started the season at Beeline for the AHRA Winternationals. He qualified #4 in the sixteen-car field. In the opening round, his 9.38 beat Barrie Poole and in round two a 9.34 turned back Roy Hill in his new Duster. A semifinal 9.37 beat Wayne Gapp's ailing Pinto and moved him into the final against "Dyno Don" Nicholson. Unfortunately, Yow's Demon broke, and he slowed to 10.86/88.66 in a runner-up finish to Nicholson's 9.50/141. At Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, he again qualified #4, this time with a 9.44/145.39. An easy 9.76 in the first round, beat Larry Huff's 9.96. But he was unable to return for his second-round race against Bob Lambeck. The team had more problems at Gainesville after running 9.19 to qualify #5. The car broke and was unable to run, letting first alternate Bob Glidden take his place in the field. Warner Robins held an eight-car show soon after that, and Yow qualified #1 and ran 9.50 and 9.35 (Low ET) to reach the final. Unfortunately, rain halted the race and the finals were never run. Another eight-car show was run at National Trail in April. Melvin ran a solo 9.17/148.51 in the first round, before losing to Bill Jenkins' 9.25/149 in the semifinals with a 9.36/144.46. Also ran 9.18 at York PA. |

Notes: Former Jenkins/Larson car. Miami FL 7/29/73 Richie Zul's car and transporter were stolen at the NHRA Summernationals. He rented Bill Jenkins' old '71 Camaro and stuffed his engine into it to keep his race commitments. It worked out quite well as he won over an eight-car field at Englishtown shortly after. He opened with a 9.57/126.76, and then in the semifinals, his solo 9.37/145.63 advanced when Frank Russo broke a water hose. He faced the Pinto of John Healy in the final, and Zul's 9.40/145.86 got the victory. At the Super Stock Magazine Nationals, he qualified #12 in the sixteen-car field with a 9.49/145.16, but he fouled against Melvin Yow in the opening round. On August 8, he competed at the USRT event at Englishtown. Ironically, he was substituting for Jenkins, who had his Vega stolen at St. Louis three days before this race. In the first round, Zul and Mike Fons, driving the "Motown Missile," had a close race that saw both drivers run 9.38 (Zul at 146.10). The Camaro got the "win" light. Zul's 9.41/146.34 was defeated in the second round by Wally Booth's 9.28/144. He then went to Maple Grove for an eight-car show where his 9.89/140.18 lost to Carl Ruth's 9.69/141 in the first round. Atco held an eight-car round-robin race later in the month, and Zul was there. Mike Fons fouled against him in his first race, and Richie eased it through with a 13.17/65.00. In the second race, Zul's 9.35/147.78 lost to Jenkins' 9.05/153. He was back at Englishtown in September for yet another eight-car show. Unfortunately, his 9.38/144.57 in the opening round lost to Scott Shafiroff's 9.37/144. The following week he was back at Englishtown for the NED Fallnationals. He ran 9.29/148.02 to qualify #3 in the eight-car show. In the first round, a great 9.26/148.51 beat Bob Judd's 9.88. |

Notes: Every Ford Pro Stock driver dropped their big block (either Boss 429 or SOHC powered) Mavericks and jumped on the small-block (351) Pinto bandwagon for '73. All except "Fast Eddie" Schartman. He had been one of the most successful Funny Car pilots in '67-'68, but his early years in Pro Stock did not get him the success he was used to. He ran the Boss 429 engine from the start in Pro Stock, first in a Cougar and then in a series of Comets/Mavericks. The '70-'71 seasons were not the greatest for him, but by '72 he was really starting to make some progress. So, he decided to run this combination again for '73. And it paid off. He beat some "name" drivers with this car which by all accounts was a dinosaur to everyone else. |

Notes: Lost the quickest side by side race in history to Bob Glidden at the NHRA Summernationals, 8.58 to 8.80. (Then, in a later round, Glidden and Richie Zul set yet another combined quickest mark, 8.53 to 8.66). | Dempsey won the NHRA Division 2 opener at DeSoto Memorial Speedway on April 16. He had set Low ET and Top Speed at 8.77/155.70 before beating Roy Hill's 8.85/153 in the final with an 8.80/154.63. A couple of weeks later, he was at Baton Rouge for the NHRA Cajun Nationals. A tough eight-car field saw such notables like Larry Lombardo and Kevin Rotty fail to qualify. Dempsey's 8.73/155.70 qualified #7. But his opening round 8.83/154.90 lost to Wally Booth's 8.78/155. At Columbus, for the NHRA Springnationals, his 8.78/154.10 qualified #11. He surprised Lee Shepherd in the first round, where his 8.86/153.06 beat Lee's quicker, but later 8.83/152. But in round two, he had the same thing happen: his quicker 8.87/153.06 lost to Don Nicholson's 8.89/153. Hardy qualified #9 at Indy for the NHRA US Nationals with an 8.74. That set up a first-round meeting with low qualifier Bob Glidden. Dempsey knew he had to take a chance on the tree. He gambled and lost, fouling away an 8.78/154.63, while Glidden advanced with an 8.64. Best NHRA national event times were 8.690 at the Grandnationals and 155.70 at the Cajun Nationals. |

Notes: New Don Hardy car was built to be Bob Glidden's. | At the second NHRA Division 2 race at DeSoto Memorial in April, Kinnett won the event and set Low ET and Top Speed at 8.65/157.34. It was a short field as only five cars qualified for the available eight spots. Jim ran his 8.65/157 in the first round, while beating Buddy Shanklin. In the semifinals, he got the "odd-lot" single and ran another 8.65 at 156.79. In the final, he beat Morris Johnson's 8.99/151 with an 8.78/153.06. At the NHRA Cajun Nationals, Jim qualified #6 in the eight-car field with an 8.58/158.73. An 8.67/157.34 in the first round, lost to Frank Iaconio's 8.50/157. Best NHRA national event times were Englishtown at 8.560 and Baton Rouge at 158.73. |

Notes: John won the NHRA Division 5 Opener at Pueblo Motorsports Park in April. He set Low ET and Top Speed in qualifying #1 with a 9.06/150.25. In the first round, John's 9.08/146.27 beat Russell Pierson and another 9.06 at 147.29 advanced on a solo in the semifinal. He went up against Gordie Rivera in the final and Hagen's 9.08/150.25 got the victory over Rivera's 9.26/149. Best national event times were 8.590 at the Fallnationals and 158.73 at the World Finals. |

Notes: Alban qualified #12 at the NHRA Gatornationals, but in the first round, he lost to Randy Humphrey. At the NHRA Springnationals, an 8.72/157.34 qualified #5 in the field, but he lost to Don Nicholson in the first round. He continued to qualify well when he showed up at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals, hitting 8.65/158.73 to qualify #9. Unfortunately, by qualifying #9 that set up a first-round meeting with low qualifier Bob Glidden. Gauthier ran a strong 8.67/157.61, but it wasn't enough as Glidden moved on with an 8.51/158. |

Notes: Also 8.74 at NHRA Columbus 6/80. Roy qualified #10 at the NHRA Winternationals but lost to Bob Glidden in the first round. He did better at the Bakersfield March Meet, where he was runner-up to Randy Humphrey's 8.54/154 with an 8.72/156.52. He was runner-up again at the NHRA Division 2 Opener at Warner Robins, where he fouled away an 8.78/154.37 in the final. Roy had the misfortune of qualifying #9 at the NHRA Springnationals with an 8.74/156.24. It was unfortunate because he again met Glidden in the first round. This time Roy's car broke on the line giving Bob a single into round two. Roy was at Englishtown on July 13 for the NHRA Summernationals, where he used an 8.71/156.24 to qualify #13. Unfortunately, he could not run in the first round, and alternate Sam Gianino took his place in the field. Lee Shepherd beat him in the first round, at the US Pro Stock Open at Maryland International. At Indy for the US Nationals, Roy just made the field with an 8.71 that held for #16. He lost early. Hill spent a lot of time with his big match race, IHRA motors, and skipped many NHRA events, including the High Nationals, the Grandnationals in Canada, and the season's final two events, the Fallnationals and the World Finals. He was one of many that were unhappy with the weight breaks for the Chrysler cars. |

Notes: The team's NHRA national event season was not as successful as someone with a #7 finish number expected. Larry was the fifth alternate at Pomona at 8.89 (speed unavailable). He qualified on the bump at Gainesville at 8.739/153.58 but lost to Joe Satmary in round one, 8.77/152 to 9.524/111.38. Larry was the second alternate at NHRA Englishtown at 8.750/156.24. That was his final NHRA national event of the year. |

Notes: Third alternate at 1979 Winters at 8.82. After failing to qualify at Pomona, Booth really stepped it up at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals. His 8.66/156.79 qualified #7. An opening round 8.71/155.44 beat Tom Owens, but a slowing 9.22/113.78 lost to Mark Yuill's 8.74/153 in round two. At the rain postponed NHRA Cajun Nationals, he lasted until the semifinals, where his 8.81 lost to Lee Shepherd's 8.72. The next stop on the NHRA tour was at Columbus for the Springnationals. Booth's 8.77 qualified #10, and in round one, his 8.86/153.32 lost to Larry Lombardo's 8.76/155 in Bill Jenkins' Camaro. He did not compete at the Mile High Nationals, but he was at Englishtown for the Summernationals, where he qualified #4 with an 8.69. He improved to 8.65 in the first round, and he beat Joe Satmary, and an 8.72 in round two, beat fellow AMC campaigner Andy Mannarino's 8.75. In the semifinals, he lost to eventual winner Frank Iaconio. He ran really well at the PHR Championships held at Martin, Mich. There, he qualified #2 with an 8.71/152.28, and he ran steady 8.7's with an 8.70 best coming in the semifinal with a win over Mark Yuill's 8.74. He went up against Lombardo in the final, and Larry's 8.65/154 got the win over Wally's 8.71/154.63. Wally skipped the NHRA Grandnationals in Canada, but was at Indy for the US Nationals. He qualified #10 with an 8.72/153.58, but he lost to Iaconio in the opening round. He also did not attend the NHRA Fallnationals in Seattle. At the NHRA World Finals at Ontario Motor Speedway, he qualified #7 with an 8.76/153.84. A first-round 8.83/153.06 beat Gary Pugh, but he fouled (8.97/154.10) against Shepherd in round two. He finished fourteenth in NHRA points for '79. This was the last year that he campaigned as he retired from driving after the World Finals. |

Notes: Don is in the near lane. Also 8.73/155.70 at the '79 Winters. | Campanello qualified #10 at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals with an 8.73/155.77. He fouled in the first round, of eliminations and slowed to 9.06 while his opponent, Lee Shepherd, advanced with an 8.65. At Gainesville, for the NHRA Gatornationals, his 8.74/156.25 qualified #12. In the opening round, his 8.75/156.52 advanced when Shepherd failed to show. He improved to 8.680/156.79 in the second round to take out Jim Kinnett's 8.87/152 but a semifinal 8.74/156.25 lost to Ronnie Sox's 8.65/155. He was at Columbus in June for the NHRA Springnationals. There, an 8.80 got him the #13 spot in the show. He had a close first-round race against Shepherd that saw his 8.87/153.58 finish second best to Lee's 8.85/152. Don was the first alternate at Indy for the NHRA US Nationals with an 8.83/154.90 best. The Gators times were Don's best for 1979. |

Notes: Hill started the '79 season at Tucson for the AHRA Winternationals. He lasted until the semifinals before fouling against Kevin Rotty. Roy qualified on the "bump" at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals with an 8.80/156.79. In the first round, his 8.82/155.17 advanced when Tom Chelbana's Starfire broke. Ronnie Sox's Omni broke in round two, and Roy moved into the semifinals with an 8.80. Unfortunately, his Arrow broke in just off the line in his semifinal race with Joe Satmary. He failed to qualify at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationalsand at Columbus for the NHRA pringnationals where his 8.88 best was only good enough for the third alternate. Roy failed to qualify at Indy for the NHRA US Nationals. He blew an engine so badly during qualifying that the rods coming out of the engine actually damaged the frame. His 8.89/154.10 best was good for the sixth alternate. |

Notes: Dyno ran the SOHC Maverick early in '72 before his 351 Pinto was built. And it was a strong runner. On January 2, he set a 9.44 OCIR track record at the first OCIR All-Pro event. A blown transmission got to him in round one. At the Lions Grand Premiere also in Jan Dyno won the event beating Butch Leal in the final with a 9.59/142.40. At that meet, Nicholson reset the NHRA record at 9.58/142.85. He then qualified number one with a 9.54 at Phenix City for the first USRT team race. But a blown clutch while staging in the final left Don as Runner-up. In the USRT point standings, he finished third. At the AHRA Winternationals, Don qualified #1 with a 9.60/143.08, but lost oil pressure in round one, and shut off. A 9.73/140 qualified Don fifth at the NHRA Winternationals in Feb, and he won his first-round race, but breakage kept him from advancing to round two. Dyno then got his Pinto and Ken Dondero was given the driving chores of the Maverick. - RH | Fleer bump gum card claimed 9.40/145, but those are likely rounded estimates, not actual times. 9.734 NHRA Pomona CA 2/72. |
