Notes: Jim bought this Pinto Pro Stock from Mark Seaman and Pete Rich in September of 1975. It was red, white, and blue and originally called "The Stone Pony." He repainted it Animal Orange and put "Animal Jim" in big letters on the side for the first time instead of having a car name. Seaman and Rich gave Jim a great jump start and taught him a lot about running the car and Pro Stock racing. The Pinto was a good trainer. Mark Seaman and Pete Rich had built the Pinto cloning Gapp & Roush's Pro Stock Pinto at the time. It had a Gapp & Roush 366 Cleveland engine, 4-speed Lenco, and a Dana rear-end with 6:1 gears and it ran 9s at 150+ mph. Animal Jim ran this car in AHRA, UDRA, NHRA, IHRA and Garlits' PRO races plus many match races from September '75 to the end of '79. Photo from 78 AHRA Winternationals. |

Notes: Shay was at Phoenix on January 25 for the Winter Classic. She qualified #1, but her 9.26/147.54 in the opening round fell to eventual winner Larry Lombardo's 8.87/153. An 8.994/151.51 at the Pomona Winternationals was the first eight-second run recorded by a woman. Shay qualified #13 but lost to Richie Zul in round one, 8.90/151 to 9.12/150. That was her last NHRA national event of the year. Shay also ran 8.99/150 at NHRA D4 LaPlace LA in march. Was that 8.99 quicker than the 8.994 at Pomona? RH | Shay finished second in Division 4 Pro Stock points (behind only Shelby Jester) in 1976. Did she retire in 76 or 77? |

Notes: Brad qualified #12 for the Bakersfield March Meet with a 9.23. He ran another 9.23 in the first round to upset Randy Humphrey's quicker 9.15. In the second round, his off-pace 9.51 lost to Kevin Rotty's 9.10. Won Division 7 in 1976 or finished 5th? The Yuill Bros. raced a lot on the divisional scene but only ran one national event, Seattle, in 1976. Brad qualified #12 at 9.027/151.51 and lost in round one to Warren Johnson, 8.81 to 9.12. |

Notes: Rufus was at Suffolk on April 29 for the second NHRA Division Two race. In round one, his 9.24/146.08 defeated William Parris' 9.55/144. He got the "odd-lot" solo in round two and made an easy pass to advance. In the semifinal, his 9.23/146 beat William Smallwood's 9.22/146. He faced the Vega of Carmen Rotonda in the final. Both ran 9.31, with the Chevy getting the win. |

Notes: Gary qualified #16 at NHRA Pomona at 8.738/157.06 in his new Camaro. He lost in round one to Lee Hunter, 8.67/154.63 to 8.76/155.70. Gary ran 8.72/154.63 at Fremont in April 1980. He was in Seattle for the second NHRA Division Six race in the first week of May. He qualified #6 in the eight-car field, and in the opening round, his 8.76/152.28 advanced when Mark Yuill fouled against him. But an off-pace 9.22/151.00 in the semifinal lost to Randy Humphrey's 8.72/154. The third NHRA Division Six race was run at OCIR just a few weeks later (May 17). Hansen qualified #7 with an 8.66/155.44. In round one, his 8.74/154.90 lost to Ken Dondero's 8.69/156. Gary was the seventh alternate at NHRA Indy (times unknown, but the fourth alternate was an 8.74). That was Gary's last NHRA national event of the year. |

Notes: Sam was having a rough time attempting to qualify at NHRA national events in the early part of '80. He was doing OK on the Divisional level, but the national events were escaping him. In April, he showed up at Indianapolis for the Division 3 Opener. He qualified #4 with an 8.74/156.25 and made it all the way to the final before losing to Bob Glidden. At the second Division 3 race at Edgewater, he qualified #6 with an 8.82, but he lost to Andy Mannarino in round one. He finally qualified for the first time in '80 at an NHRA national event at the Springnationals. An 8.77/155.17 qualified #10. That set up a first-round meeting with Lee Shepherd. Sam must have been a little nervous as Lee qualified with an 8.57. Sure enough, Gianino tried to make up the difference on the tree, and he fouled. He failed to qualify at the NHRA Summernationals with an 8.730/157.06 best. He did get to race in round one, as an alternate, but he lost to Jim Kinnett, 8.66/154 to 9.054/147.29. At the PHR Championships at Martin, Michigan, he qualified last in the eight-car show with an 8.78, but he lost to Jim Kinnett in the first round. He followed the NHRA tour to Canada for the Grandnationals, but he was the second alternate with an 8.80/153.80 best. Sam had one of his best national event showings at Indianapolis for the NHRA US Nationals. He ran 8.680/156.52 to qualify #14. An 8.76/155.17 beat Larry Johnson's 8.83/155 in the first round. In round two, he slowed to an 8.82/151.00 that lost to Shepherd's 8.59/158. |

Notes: Oscar purchased Reid Whisnant's 71/72 car. Reid drove it in a few races while his 73 Don Hardy Duster was being built. In June, Roberts was at Maple Grove for the third NHRA Division One race. The field was two cars short for the eight-car field, so he got to make a solo in the first round. In the semifinal, his 9.37/145.16 lost to Richie Zul's 9.34/145. At the NHRA Summernationals, Oscar drove a Vega to the #27 qualifying position and a first-round loss. We need to validate which car that was. He was running the "Yankee Jo" Duster at Maryland International for the 1st annual U.S. P/S Open race. He had qualified #12, but in round one, his 9.51 lost to Lee Edwards' 9.07. On July 29, he was at Miami-Hollywood for the fourth NHRA Division Two race. His opening round 9.47 beat Jim Rodriquez's 10.29. In round two, his 9.54/143.31 lost to eventual winner Whisnant's 9.19/148. Oscar was the first alternate at the Sanair Grandnationals, but we are unsure if that was the Duster or the Vega. We are listing the speed for the Vega for now. He got into the field and lost to Paul Blevins in round one, with a 9.654/146.92. Oscar had the Duster at Amarillo for the NHRA World Finals. He qualified #6 as an alternate in the Western Conference (?) and #10 overall. In the opening round, his 9.620/142.40 lost to Bob Riffle's 9.48/145.16. The following week (October 14), he was at Lakeland for the IHRA Nationals. Roberts qualified #12, and in the first round, he fouled away a 9.38/146 against Bob Riffle. Roberts ended his season at the Snowbird National Open on December 2. It was an eight-car show, and his 9.24 qualified #3. Unfortunately, he fouled against Kenny Hahn in the first round. He ran 9.442/145.39 at NHRA Englishtown, but that was in a Vega. |

Notes: Retained real 4-speed in the Lenco years. Ran at Connecticut last pro stock show of 1973. Was runner up to Richie Zul, running 9.66, 9.69, and 10.02 over Dick Menard, Bob Ingles, and Jeff Jeruss before breaking a water jacket against Zul. Zul was hammering out 9.20s and would have been hard to beat. |

Notes: Did Hubert run at Indy in a 1971 Mustang? Qualified #26 there at 9.943/138.24 and improved to a 9.85 in round one, to upset Bill Jenkins at 9.96. He lost in round two to Stu McDade, 9.55 to 9.89. Listing these times in this separate entry for a Mustang, but need to confirm. If we find that he ran his Maverick at Indy, combine those two entries. |

Notes: No one expected Chevy man Wally Booth to be behind the wheel of an AMC in '72. The car was built using the stock frame rails tied together with square tubing. It used Pinto rack and pinion steering as well as a Dana rear with 5.57 gears. A very rare A/FX Ford aluminum radiator was also used. The engines were built by Dick Arons and Booth and displaced between 340 and 350 cubic inches. The transmission was a four-speed Borg-Warner Super T-10. | Wally opened many people's eyes when he won the NHRA Division 3 Opener at Indianapolis on April 30. Some big names were in the field, such as Mike Fons and Arlen Vanke, who qualified one-two. Booth’s final round times were 9.82/135.73. He was at Capitol for the USRT race, where he ran a 9.90 to qualify #10. Unfortunately, an opening-round 9.92/137.49 lost to Ken Dondero driving Don Nicholson's Maverick. At the second NHRA Division 3 race held at National Trail, he again reached the final, but this time had to settle for runner-up honors as Vanke's 10.09 beat his off pace 10.49. Early in June, he ran at the IHRA Longhorn Nationals at Dallas. Wally’s 9.73 qualified #8, and in round one, his 9.82/137 beat Clester Andrews. He lucked out in round two as Butch Leal had transmission trouble and was unable to run. Booth singled with a 9.76. He ran a strong 9.74/137.00 in the semifinals, but it wasn't enough to stop Ronnie Sox's 9.61/142. A week later, he was back at National Trail for the NHRA Springnationals. The little Gremlin qualified #8 with a 9.81, but it fell off to a 10.03/138.24 in the first round, losing to Carmen Rotonda's 9.82/139. By July, the car was getting much stronger, as shown by the following races. At the USRT race held at York US 30, Wally qualified with a 9.61/140.84. He improved to 9.60 at 140.18 in the first round, but lost to Don Grotheer's 9.48/146. The USRT cars ran at NHRA legal weight, but they allowed the use of rosin. He didn't run that well at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals, where he qualified #17 and his 9.82/136.77 lost to eventual winner Bill Jenkins' 9.40/144 in round one. A few days later, he was at Atco for another USRT race. He didn't get far in eliminations, but he qualified with a 9.62/140.62. Milan hosted four Pro Stock cars late in the month, and Booth broke into the 9.50s with a 9.57 beating Wayne Gapp's 9.85 in the first race. He ran another 9.57 in his second race but lost to Nicholson, who laid a holeshot on him and beat him with a slower 9.62. Wally’s 9.60/140 lost to Stuart McDade's 9.48/144 in Billy Stepp's car in the final race. He closed out the month with a runner-up finish to Fons at the fourth NHRA Division 3 race at Tri-City. August started with Booth competing at the NHRA Grandnationals in Canada. He qualified #5 in the sixteen-car show with a 9.75. His 9.79/135.13 beat James Cook in the first round, but his second round, 9.82/135.74 lost to Jenkins' 9.42/144. Jenkins would go on to win again. Booth was getting a bit of a following by the time Indy came around for the NHRA US Nationals. Everyone wanted to see the "underdog" do well. At Indy, Booth's 9.76/137.85 qualified #11 for the 32 car field. He lost in the inter-brand rivalry with Rich Maskin, who qualified two spots ahead of him, but Wally lost to Lary Huff in the first round. He then went to Oxford Plains for a scheduled match race against Don Carlton. Don could not show, so Ken Dondero in "Dyno Don's" SOHC Maverick was called in as a last-minute replacement. The "dinosaur" beat the little Gremlin two straight. | Wally also qualified at Indy 1972 with a 9.766/137.65. He qualified the Gremlin #8 at NHRA Ontario with a 9.597/138.67, his best NHRA national event times of 1972. Wally had two shut-off runs in eliminations; the first beat a broken Gordon Collett, but the second lost to Bob Glidden’s 9.73. Formerly listed 9.525/141.95. We need validation of those runs. |

Notes: By 1973, there weren't a lot of Challengers running in Pro Stock as most of the Mopar campaigners had switched to the A-body platform. Castaldo stuck to his Challenger and did well with it. In April, he was at Suffolk for an eight-car show. Those pesky Vega's were running well as they picked up the first three spots in qualifying. Castaldo's 9.52 beat Earl Hansell's 10.81 in the opening round of eliminations. But he spun the tires hard in the semifinal and lost to Rich Mirarcki's 9.85. He was at Englishtown on April 15 for an eight-car round-robin show. In the first round, his 9.71/145.86 lost to Mirarcki's 9.51/144. In his second race, Ray Allen's 9.50/145 defeated his 9.57/143.31. He soloed in his third race and ran his best time at 9.53/144.23. Shortly after that, he went to Connecticut for yet another eight-car show. A first-round 9.72 beat Rich Simone, and in the semifinal, his eased up 10.16 advanced when Frank Iaconio fouled. But he hurt the engine on the pass and could not run the final. Iaconio took his place as the "break rule" was in effect. Charlie was the second alternate at the NHRA Summernationals at 9.52/143.50. That was his only NHRA national event. Charlie won at an Englishtown event in July with a 9.51/143.76, per Raceway Park News. He also ran 9.46 at Atco. Reed Koeppe owns the car as of 9/21, and he confirms S&M built it. |
