Notes: First IHRA 8-second run. Ran 9.05/148.27 at Indy. Won Springnationals at Columbus. Ran 9.25 at 147.29 to win IHRA Bristol Springs. Early low qualifier at Gatornationals at 9.22- 148.51. Also ran 9.04 at Muncie. | Carlton started the season by qualifying the "Mopar Missile" first with a 9.22 (Low ET) at 148.51 at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. In the first round, he beat Barrie Poole's 9.96 Pinto with a 9.70. In round two, Carlton got the odd-lot single and eased it through with a 10.20. In the third round (32 car field), he beat Bob Lambeck with a 9.50/145. In the semifinals, Don picked up the pace to a 9.34/147.78 to beat Jack Roush's Pinto and to earn the right to face Don Nicholson in the final. Nicholson got the win in the final with a 9.33. Carlton bypassed many smaller meets, skipping the OCIR All-Pro events and the Bakersfield March Meet, and he didn't run any AHRA events either (except the National Challenge race) in '73. Instead, he concentrated on the NHRA and IHRA events. The "Missile" team was at Lakeland for the IHRA Winternationals on March 3 and came away with a big win. Carlton qualified #2 with a 9.29/148.50 (Top Speed) behind Mike Fons' 9.25. He easily got past the first-round and then ran 9.25 at only 132 to beat Reid Whisnant's 9.41/144 in round two. In the semifinals, he set Low ET with a 9.17 at 141.50 to beat Nicholson's 9.28/146. In the final, he faced off against old foe Ronnie Sox in an all-Duster final. Carlton got the win running a 9.19/141.00 to win over Sox's 9.29/146. The next event the team raced at was the NHRA Gatornationals. Don qualified #2 with a 9.12/150, a tenth behind low qualifier Wayne Gapp's 9.02/149. Carlton beat Rufus Boyd in the first round, with a 9.22, but in round two, despite running a great 9.06 at an early shutting off 139.75, he lost to Nicholson's Low ET and Top Speed of the meet run of 9.01/150. Carlton completely dominated the IHRA Longhorn Nationals at Dallas on April 29. He qualified #1 while resetting both ends of the IHRA Pro Stock record to 9.10/150.50. He then racked up times of 9.20, 9.13, and 9.12 to make the final, where he beat Bob Riffle in the "Rod Shop" Demon with another 9.10. 1973 was turning out to be the year of the Ford's with the 351 powered Pinto's winning everything, but Carlton proved that the Mopars could still run. On May 6, he again reset the IHRA Pro Stock record, this time down to 8.98 while winning the IHRA Pro-Am Championships at Rockingham. He ran 8.98 at 149.75 while qualifying #1. The car was promptly weighed and found to be 25 lbs overweight. He ran 9.02/151.77 in the first round, over Oscar Roberts' 9.36/146. In round two, a 9.04/149.50 advanced when Stuart McDade fouled. He dipped back into the eights in the semifinals with an 8.99/149.00, beating a fouling Ronnie Lyles at 9.22. In the final, he ran Dick Landy, who had run 152 mph here. Don took the win with another eight-second time, an 8.98/150.00 over Landy's 9.09/149. That was Don's third straight IHRA event win. He got his fourth win at the next race, the IHRA Northern Nationals at Muncie for the IHRA Northern Nationals on May 20. He qualified #1 with a 9.24 (Sox was second way back at 9.35); Carlton worked his way to the semifinals, where he set Low ET with a 9.04 at 152.28 to beat Dave Strickler's 9.35/145. In the final, a 9.06/151.00 beat Don Grotheer's 9.47/145. He was starting to look unbeatable on the IHRA trail. Then the "Mopar Missile" pulled into Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals. They were expected to run well, but nobody expected them to win as easily as they did. Don set Low ET of the meet in qualifying #1 with a 9.32/147.54. In the first round, he beat Jack Roush's 9.50/145 with a 9.46/145.86. In round two, he dumped the "Grump," Bill Jenkins with a 9.45/146.81 over Bill's 9.48/145. In the semifinals, Carlton stepped up to a 9.38/147.78 over Melvin Yow's off pace 11.65. In the final, he met up with another Mopar that was wreaking havoc on the troops, Butch Leal, in his Duster. The all-Mopar final ended early when Leal fouled away a 9.44/146 while Carlton won with a 9.40/147.78. The "Mopar Missile" won for the fifth straight time on the IHRA circuit at Bristol for the Springnationals. The competition was getting closer as Don only qualified #3 with a 9.26 behind Leal (9.22) and Nicholson (9.23). But in eliminations, Carlton was strong. He ran 9.28 in the first two rounds to beat Eddie Ratliff and Strickler. In the semifinals, he beat Sox, who had taken out Leal the round before. In the finals, it was Carlton against the Pinto of Nicholson. The "Dyno Man" couldn't wait and fouled away a 9.43/145 while Carlton motored to a 9.25/147.29 for the victory. Don showed up at Milan Dragway for the NHRA Division 3 race and set Low ET and Top Speed before losing to Gapp in the final. At Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals, Carlton was one of almost 50 Pro Stock cars trying to make the 32 car field. He qualified #6 with a 9.21 and only lasted until the second round, where Sox's 9.19/147 beat his 9.28/147.78. Carlton didn't make the trip up to Canada for the NHRA Grandnationals in August. He did run at the PHR Championships at Martin, Michigan. Don lasted until the semifinals of the sixteen-car show, where his 9.18/147.78 lost to eventual winner Leal's 9.15/150. The "Mopar Missile" made its only AHRA showing of the year on August 26 for the National Challenge race at Tulsa. Don qualified #6 with a 9.18/148.76 in the 32 car field. He beat Raymond Martin in the first round, and in round two, a 9.19/148 beat Sonny Bryant's Big-Block Camaro at a distant 9.45/145. In the third round, he beat Mike Fons' 9.29/146 with a 9.20/149. Unfortunately, the car broke in the semifinal, giving eventual winner Jenkins a single into the final. A week later, he was at Indy for the NHRA US Nationals. It was another 32 car show, and Carlton ran 9.24/149.00 to qualify #14. A first-round 9.23 beat Sam Gianino's 9.33, but in the second round, both he and Melvin Yow ran 9.05 (Don at 148.20), with Yow winning in Billy Stepp's Dodge. Carlton was shooting for his sixth straight IHRA victory when he rolled into Bristol for the All-American Championships on September 16. He qualified #7 with a 9.20, and in round one, he beat Hubert Platt. In round two, he picked up to a 9.15 to beat Dave Kanners' 9.44/144, and in the semifinals, he advanced when Yow lost an engine. Once again, he faced Nicholson in a final round. It was a good race, but "Dyno" stopped Carlton's streak of wins with a 9.14/150, beating the "Missile's" 9.16/149.00. He made it into another IHRA final at Rockingham for the US Open in October. This time he faced Wayne Gapp, and Wayne ran an impressive 8.85 to win over Carlton's 9.12/151.

Notes: Also ran 9.04 at Rockingham 1973 and 9.07/148.51 at Sacramento. Landy won the final OCIR All-Pro race of '73, stopping Butch Leal in the final with track records of 9.17/149.00. Set 9.07 AHRA national record at Fremont and won the AHRA World Championship. The car had to be rebuilt due to a towing accident that occurred on the way to Columbus. | Dick lasted until round two at the AHRA Winternationals. He qualified #5 with a 9.34/148.51, and he beat Joe Satmary's 9.79/140 in the first round, with a 9.39/145.39. He lost to Ronnie Sox in the next round. He was at OCIR for its third All-Pro event. Landy qualified #1 with a 9.32 and picked up to a 9.27 (Low ET) at 146 while beating Sonny Bryant's Camaro in the semifinals. He also got Top Speed at 147.29, but in the final, he had problems and slowed to 10.35/101, which lost to Butch Leal's 9.44/146. At Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, he qualified with a 9.48/148.02 and a 9.70/145 advanced past round one when Jim Baker fouled. Dick got a single in round two when Mike Fons failed to show. He lost to eventual winner Don Nicholson in round three (32 car field) when his 9.60/145.86 came up second best to "Dyno Don's" 9.45/145 in his Pinto. As mentioned, he set both ends of the track record at OCIR at the final All-Pro race. Landy prevented Leal from making a clean sweep of the series. In March, he was at Fremont for the AHRA Northern Nationals. Landy qualified #1 in the sixteen-car field with a 9.16/150.25. He soloed with a 9.15/148.97 in the first round, when Monty Mantovan's Camaro broke. A 9.10/150.25 in round two beat Bob Lambeck, while a 9.07 (Low ET) at 149.75 took out Ken Van Cleave's Duster in the semifinals. Dick scored the win in the final by running 9.12/150.75 to drop Huff's 9.32/147. In April, he was at Tulsa for AHRA's Grand American race. He qualified #1 with a 9.25, but he failed to reach the finals. A few days later, he was at Sacramento for the California State Championships. Once again, he qualified #1, this time with a 9.07/149.76. He went on to win the event with a 9.17/148.52 in the final that stopped Bill Bagshaw's 9.37/146. He had another good showing at Rockingham on May 6 for the IHRA Pro-Am Championships. Landy qualified #2 with a 9.04/152.28 (Top Speed) behind Don Carlton's record-breaking 8.98. These two would work their way through the field to meet in the final. Dick started his march by running 9.11/148.76 to beat Don Grotheer's 9.34/146. He then beat John Brumley in round two before facing Sox in the semifinals. These two had a good race, with Dick's 9.08/149.25 coming out on top over Ronnie's close 9.11/148. In the final, Carlton ran another 8.98/150 to outrun Landy's 9.09/149.25.

Notes: The Fastest Limited Pro Stock 1981 NHRA with 8.23 National Record. Also set 8.31 National Record at Gators. Also 161.00 at 81 Pomona Winters and 160.14 at 81 Cajuns. Photo from Gators. | Bob entered the '81 season with backing from Firestone and Ford's Motorcraft Division. This was the first time Ford gave any support to Glidden. The season started at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals where Bob was using a 327 cubic inch engine early in qualifying. He made it to the top of the charts and then switched to his trusty 343 cubic inch motor. With that combo, he ran track records of 8.33/163.04 to qualify first. The only car near his in qualifying was Lee Shepherd's at 8.38; everyone else was in at 8.50 to 8.62. Glidden started eliminations by beating Roy Hill with an 8.41/159. In the second round, he beat another Mopar, the Omni of Paul Gentilozzi with an 8.47/159. The semifinals saw Bob take out Frank Iaconio's Camaro with an 8.45/160. This put him into the final against first-time NHRA finalist, Pat Musi. Bob won his 3second NHRA National event with an 8.38/161.00 over Musi's 8.52/159. At the NHRA Gatornationals, Bob reset the NHRA National record to 8.31 in qualifying. The speed on that run was 162.74, good enough for Top Speed of the meet. He continued to run strong in eliminations, running 8.35/162.16 in the first round, over a fouling Don Coonce and in round two Bob Ingles fouled against him and Glidden moved into the semifinals with an 8.48/160.71. But in the semis, the Fairmont got out of shape and Bob shut down to 10.01/89.99 that lost to eventual winner Iaconio's 8.41/161. Shortly after this, Glidden showed up at Bowling Green, Kentucky for some test runs. What was unusual about this was his engine. A destroked to 370 cubic inch Boss 429 was in the Fairmont. The times on his runs were in the 8.50's with speeds in the upper 150's. The Cleveland engine was back in the car at Green Valley Raceway on April 5 for the NHRA Western Regional race. Bob qualified #2 in the eight-car field with an 8.28/162.16 behind Shepherd's 8.26/161. Glidden improved to 8.25/163.63 in his first-round win over Steve Taylor and in the semifinals, a great 8.23 beat Jerry Janke. This set up a Shepherd vs Glidden final for the first time in '81. It was a good final round race as both ran 8.31/163.04, but Glidden won as Shepherd had left a red light on the 'tree. On April 26, NHRA held its Southern Nationals at Atlanta. The Pro categories had eight-car fields. Bob qualified #3 with an 8.44/160.42 behind the Camaros of Shepherd and Iaconio. In round one, Bob's 8.50 beat Warren Johnson and set up a semifinal run with Shepherd. In the Semis, Glidden fouled and Lee won with an 8.49/159. Bob was also at the NHRA Eastern Regional at Englishtown and while he failed to make the finals, he did set Low ET at 8.31. Another win came at the NHRA Cajun Nationals. Once again Bob qualified #3 behind Shepherd and Iaconio. A first-round 8.46 beat Coonce and in the semifinals, he ran Shepherd. As always when these two raced, a great race. Bob's 8.44/161.00 beat Lee's 8.45/161. This moved Glidden into the final against surprise finalist, Andy Mannarino. Andy's Firebird was almost a tenth off of Bob's pace, but he picked up to an 8.51 in the final to make it close as Glidden's 8.46/160.14 got him the victory. He would win only one more NHRA National event in '81 and it came at the next race, the Springnationals. There he qualified #2 with an 8.50/159.29 behind Shepherd's 8.46/160. Both would work their way to the final. Bob beat Dave Hutchens in round one, with an 8.52/157.89 and in round two his 8.53/157.61 beat Ingles. He ran Low ET of eliminations with an 8.47 at 158.72 in the semifinals to take out Alban Gauthier's hard running Arrow. Once again it was Shepherd vs Glidden in the final. Shepherd fouled with an 8.51/159 with Bob ran 8.49/159.29 for career victory #34. It was a whole year before victory #35. He came close to winning at the NHRA Mile High Nationals. An 8.97/150.25 qualified #2 behind you-know-who's white Camaro. In eliminations, the Fairmont was the only car that ran in the eights. A first-round an 8.98/149.00 beat Harry Scribner, and in the semifinals, his 8.97/149.75 beat Gordie Rivera. Shepherd and Glidden lined up for the final with Glidden having the edge as Lee's best time in eliminations had been 9.02. Shepherd stayed consistent with a 9.03/149 in the final while Bob set Low ET and Top Speed with an 8.91/151.26. The only problem was, he had left a red light on at the line. Glidden must have been kicking himself for that one. Then came the NHRA Eastern Regional race at Indianapolis. Shepherd and Iaconio did not attend so you would think it was a piece of cake for Bob. It was not to be. First Bob was only able to qualify #2 with an 8.49/159.01 behind Musi's 8.47/163. That was unusual enough, but then in round one, his 8.64/158.45 lost to Mannarino's 8.59/155. Back at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals, Bob used an 8.42/159.85 to qualify #3. In round one he beat Johnson with an 8.53/159.01 and an 8.56/158.73 took out Ingles in round two. This gave fans a Shepherd-Glidden confrontation in the semifinals. Bob was quicker in their race with an 8.50/159.01, but Lee got the win with a quicker-leaving 8.51/158. The two would meet again at Maryland just a few days later for the US Pro Stock Open. It was a sixteen-car field and Glidden beat Ronnie Manchester in the first round, with an 8.56 and in round two another 8.56 beat Musi. Once again Bob ran Shepherd in the semifinals, and once again Lee prevailed with his 8.54 beating Glidden's 8.61. Next stop was in Canada for the NHRA Grandnationals. Glidden set a track record 8.31 in qualifying #1. His speed on the run was 162.45. It tied for Top Speed of the meet and a new track record, but Gauthier ran the number first. Bob was running well. He beat Musi in round one, with an 8.43 and in the semifinals his 8.47/159.85 beat Iaconio. Of course, he met Shepherd in the final. Both had run 8.47 in the semis so it was anyone's race. Glidden fouled and Shepherd got his 13th career win. I believe that it was around this time he got the nickname "Mad Dog." He was at US 131 for the PHR Championships where he ripped off an 8.38 (Low ET) at 159.01 to qualify first. Unfortunately, he fell off to 8.67/135.54 in a first-round loss to Coonce. If that wasn't bad enough, Shepherd went on to win. Next came Indy. Glidden always ran well at Indy. It didn't start so well as he lost an engine in qualifying. After installing another engine the Fairmont's 8.44/161.00 held for the #3 spot. Gauthier broke against him in the first round, and Bob advances with an 8.50/158.17. In round two, Iaconio's Camaro broke on the line and an 8.45/160.14 advanced into the semifinals against John Hagen's Arrow. The two had a close race with Glidden's 8.44 beating John's 8.46. The Texas Camaro was waiting to meet Bob in the final. This time Glidden got beat as Lee's 8.40/160 outran Bob's 8.46/160.14.

Notes: Photo from Indy 1981, where Pat began driving this car after racing his white Camaro with Joe Folgore for the early part of the season. Pat qualified #1 at 8.390/161, which held up for Low ET of the event. That was Pat's best NHRA ET of the year, and his 163.04 from Fremont (8.397) was his fastest.

Notes: Andy was at Edgewater on May 4 for the second NHRA Division 3 race. He qualified #2 with an 8.62 behind Bob Glidden's 8.48. These two would work their way through the field to meet in the final. Glidden had the edge and held it with an 8.50/153, beating Mannarino's runner-up effort of 8.71/152.80. He failed to qualify at the NHRA Springnationals, where he was the fourth alternate with an 8.87/154.90. But as the season progressed, the team got stronger. At the NHRA Summernationals, Andy qualified #7 with an 8.60/155.97. An 8.69/154.10 beat Don Nicholson's 8.87/152 in round one, but in round two, his 8.67/156.52 lost to Frank Iaconio's 8.56/157. He was at Maple Grove in August at the NHRA Division 1 race. There he lasted until the semifinals, where an 8.73/153.58 lost to eventual winner Iaconio's 8.57/156. He followed the NHRA tour into Canada for the Grandnationals. It was an eight-car field, and his 8.66/154.90 qualified #6. The race was then rained out after qualifying, and Mannarino packed up and left for the PHR Meet at Martin, Michigan. Andy qualified #2 there with an 8.61 and another 8.61/155.17 in the first round, beat Joe Satmary. He was caught napping on the line in the semifinals, and his 8.65 lost to Jim Kinnett's 8.74. The following week (August 17), he was at Beech Bend for the NHRA Division 3 race. A first-round 8.72/157.61 advanced over a fouling Larry Peternel, and in the semifinals, his 8.67/158.73 beat Jim Mikel's 8.93/154 in the "Hop Cap" Monza. This put him into another final with Glidden. Unfortunately for Andy, the results were the same, with Bob's 8.54/160 getting the win over the Firebird's 8.74/155.70. The car really improved at Indy for the NHRA US Nationals. Andy ran 8.53/157.34 to qualify #4. In the first round, his 8.53/157.61 beat Johnny Dowey's 8.69/153. But in round two, a sleepy 8.52/157.34 lost to Bill Jenkins' 8.65/155. The Maskin and Mannarino team continued to improve at Seattle, where Andy qualified #3 with an 8.45/157.34. An even better 8.44/157 beat Satmary's 8.55 in round one. The car stayed consistent with an 8.46/158.17 in round two that downed Gordie Rivera's 8.59/155. He came up against Glidden in the semifinals, and Glidden had been running 8.3s. Andy took a chance on the tree and fouled away an 8.440/158.45, which were Andy's best NHRA national event times. He had to do it as Bob won with an 8.32/160. He got some payback at Fremont's Winston Challenge race, where he actually beat Glidden in the final.

Notes: Scott won the IHRA Spring Nationals at Bristol with a best of 8.90 at 150.25. Went through eliminations with a cracked block. He defeated Phil Nichols, Wayne Gapp, Lee Edwards, and finally Larry Huff in the final with an 8.99/150.25. Scott ran 8.94 at NHRA Englishtown 1975. He was runner-up to a Don Nicholson holeshot at IHRA Union Grove, 9.01/149.00 to Scott's 8.98/150.50. Runner up at Maryland International Raceway US Pro Stock Open 7/75. | Scott Shafiroff made a huge leap from running a strong Chevy Pro Stock Vega in '74 to switching to this Ford Mustang II for '75. After the season he had, it seemed like he made the right choice. Right off the bat, the car was a contender. At Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, he qualified #7 with a 9.00/151.51. An opening round 9.01/150 beat Kenny Hahn's Duster at 9.18/148, but he lost to Bill Jenkins in round two. At the NHRA Gatornationals, he picked up even more on the pack running an 8.90 to qualify #5. But Shafiroff attempted to run an even better number to move up the chart, but the rear end tore out from the car while making his burnout. First alternate Bobby Yowell took his place in the field. After getting the car repaired, Scott ran the Mustang II, which was 50 lbs lighter than NHRA's weight, and ran an impressive 8.70. Scott was anxious to get back into competition. In April, he was at Cecil County's National Open where the car set both Low ET and Top Speed, but broke before eliminations. Things finally clicked his way at the NHRA Division 1 race at Englishtown. There, he won with a final round of 8.88/153.06. Shafiroff did a lot of match racing with the car and was very successful with it. At the NHRA Springnationals, 34 cars attempted to qualify for the sixteen-car field, and Scott's 9.02/151.26 qualified #5. He was late off the line in the first round, and his 9.11/147.29 lost to Warren Johnson's 9.18/148. Shortly after, he won over an eight-car field at Empire Dragway in New York. He set Low ET in the final with a 9.02 over Ronnie Manchester's 9.19. His biggest win of the year came at the IHRA Springnationals at Bristol. He ran 8.98, 8.99, and 8.99 over a fouling Lee Edwards in the semifinals to reach the final against Larry Huff. Larry knew that Scott was running with a wounded motor, but he also saw that he was still running a tenth faster than his Dodge. So, Huff took a chance on the 'tree and fouled while Scott ran yet another 8.99 at 150 for his first IHRA national event win. He also made it two in a row in IHRA competition when he reached the final at the IHRA Summernationals at Union Grove, but his final round 9.01 finished runner-up to "Dyno Don" Nicholson's 8.98 in an all-Ford final. The car kept improving at the NHRA national events, and at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals, Shafiroff's 8.94/153.58 was now up to #3 on the qualifying list. His speed was also tops among the qualifiers. Scott looked strong in eliminations. An opening round 8.96/153.84 advanced when Sam Gianino fouled, and in round two, he beat Charlie Castaldo with an 8.95/154.63. He went up against Jenkins in the semifinals, and the car let him down, breaking on the pass and slowing to a 10.14/99.55 loss against Jenkins' 8.94/152. His next stop was at the US Pro Stock Open held at Budds Creek. Once again, the Mustang II was flying. He ran 8.96, 8.93, and 8.99 in the semifinals over a fouling Richie Zul. His final-round opponent was Roy Hill in his Duster. Roy had not been running quite as well as Scott had, hitting a best of 8.98 in eliminations, but a final round 8.97/151 beat Scott's 8.99/150.25 for the win. Photo from the 1975 NHRA Gatornationals, Gainesville, Florida. Scott is in the photo wearing the brown coat standing behind the car.

Notes: Wally started his season at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. He qualified #5 with a 9.03/149.75. A first-round 9.09/150.25 beat Larry Huff's Dodge, but in round two, his 9.11/150.25 lost to Bob Glidden's 9.01/152. In March, AMC informed both Booth and fellow Hornet campaigner Dave Kanners that they were releasing them from their contracts. So when the two teams showed up at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals, both teams had no contracts for the rest of the season. Booth qualified #3 with a 9.05/151.51. An 8.97/152.54 in the first round beat Don Nicholson's 9.03/152, while in round two, his 9.01/152.28 beat Kanners' 9.05/150. In the semifinals, Wally ran 8.95/152.80 to beat Frank Iaconio's 9.05/152. In the final, he faced Jack Roush in the "Gapp & Roush" Mustang II. The Hornet got AMC's first-ever win in Pro Stock at an NHRA national event. Booth ran 8.97/152.80 in the final over Roush's 9.01/152. AMC was so happy with the victory that they renewed their support for the two teams. The timing for the win couldn't have been any better. On March 31, NHRA held its Division 2 Opener at Warner Robins. Wally qualified #1 with a 9.02 and then made his way into the final, where he ran Fred Shafer. Booth took the win by running Low ET and Top Speed with an 8.98/154.10 over Fred's 9.37/146. He also won the Suffolk NHRA Division 2 race in May. He qualified #1 with an 8.93/152.92 and set Low ET in the first round, with an 8.92/152 to beat Lamar Walden's Vega at 9.11. In the semifinals, he beat Roy Hill with another 8.93; in the final, an 8.97 got the victory when Kenny Hahn fouled against him. At National Trail for the NHRA Springnationals, he qualified #1 with a 9.06/150.25. A 9.15/149.00 got around Richie Zul's Camaro in the first round, but his 9.16/148.76 lost to Bobby Yowell in Billy Stepp's Dodge in round two. He won his third NHRA Division 2 race in a row when he beat Reid Whisnant in the final at Blaney. Booth's 9.00 (Low ET) at 149.00 beat Reid's 9.12/148. In mid-July, he was at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals. A 9.05/150.25 qualified #6 in the field. Booth beat Joe Satmary in round one with a 9.13/149.00. In round two, his 9.14/149.75 lost to Wayne Gapp's 9.10/140 in the "Gapp & Roush" four-door Maverick. The little Hornet continued to run stronger as the season progressed, and at the NHRA Grandnationals, he qualified #2 behind Gapp's 8.86 with an 8.940/150.75. He beat the other Hornet of Kanners in the first round with a 9.06/150.50. Another 9.06 in round two topped Tony Christopher's Duster, but in the semifinals, he fell off to a 9.09/149.00 that lost to Glidden's 8.90/153. The next big race was at Indianapolis for the NHRA US Nationals. Booth qualified #6 in the 32-car field with a 9.09, and he lasted until round three, where his 8.96/150.00 lost to Glidden's holeshot aided 8.99/153. He grabbed another Division 2 title when he won the final at Gainesville. Once again, he ran Whisnant in the final, and his 9.08/149.00 beat Reid's off-pace 9.35/147. Wally ran 8.94 at NHRA Sanair 74, 8.92 at Suffolk Dragway 74, 9.03 at Pomona, 9.05 at Englishtown, 9.06 at Columbus, 8.96 at Indy, and 9.03 at Ontario.Photo from the 1974 NHRA Gatornationals, Gainesville, Florida.

Ran 155.44 at NHRA Pomona Winters. | Bob was not happy with the NHRA's Pro Stock weight breaks for '76. The 351 powered Fords were carrying a lot more weight compared to the '75 season. More weight meant more breakage of parts. Glidden started the season at the Phoenix Winter Classic on January 25. He qualified #2 with an 8.90 and lasted until the second round before losing to Wayne Gapp's four-door Maverick. At Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, these two would meet again only this time in the final. Bob qualified #3 with an 8.80 and he beat Wally Booth and Roy Hill in the first two rounds. In the semifinals, he came up against low-qualifier Bill Jenkins. Bob got a bit of luck when Jenkins fouled away an 8.77/153 while Glidden advanced with an 8.86/155.70. Gapp and Glidden met in their ninth NHRA final. Glidden got his ninth NHRA National event victory with an 8.82/155.70 beating Wayne's 8.91/153. At the NHRA Gatornationals, an 8.78 qualified #3. He scored an easy first-round win and then beat Lee Edwards in the second round with an 8.87/154.63. In the semifinals, he met Jenkins' Monza again, only this time it was Larry Lombardo behind the wheel. Bob tried hard, but his 8.83 was no match for the Monza's 8.74. He did leave with a new NHRA speed record of 156.52. At the NHRA Springnationals, he qualified #4 and in the first round, his 8.89/152.28 beat Shelby Jester in Andy White's Monza. An 8.92/152.02 beat Bob Ingles' 9.12/147 in round two while another 8.92 at 153 lost to Warren Johnson's 8.83/153 in the semifinals. While Bob wasn't happy with the NHRA side of things he was dominating on the IHRA circuit. The NHRA tour was at Englishtown for the Summernationals in July. Glidden's 8.77 qualified #7. He made it into the second round where his 8.87 lost to Wally Booth's 8.73. Best NHRA ET was 8.772 at the Summers.

Notes: Trick. Won '72 Gators with a best of 9.55, including this win over Ronnie Sox in Round 1. - DO | Had Pro Stock Low ET/Top Speed at '72 IHRA Longhorn Nationals (Dallas) in final over Ronnie Sox. - RT | The Motown Missile bunch did not race at the AHRA Winternationals, but they were at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals where he qualified #7 in the 32 car field. In the third round, Carlton faced Ronnie Sox and his quick-leaving 9.68 beat Sox's quicker 9.64. In the semifinals, he came up against Bill Jenkins and his new Vega. Don tried hard, but his 9.82/141.95 was no match for Jenkins' 9.68/140. Things went much better at the NHRA Gatornationals. He had only qualified #12 in the sixteen-car field with a 9.70, but he improved to 9.58/142.85 in the first round, to beat Sox who missed a shift. In the second round, his 9.56/142.85 beat Bruce Walker's 9.77/140 in Barry Setzer's big block Camaro. In the semifinals, he faced Ken Dondero driving Don Nicholson SOHC-powered Maverick. The two had a close race with Don's 9.55/143.08 holding off Ken's 9.54/143. This put the "Missile" in the final against Melvin Yow. Yow's best in eliminations was 9.70, so he had to gamble on the 'tree. He lost it and fouled away a 9.75/138 while Carlton got the victory with another 9.55 at 143.54. In April, Carlton was at Rockingham for the IHRA Pro-Am Championships, but he was driving his own Demon. The next race for the "Motown Missile" was at Dallas on June 5 for the IHRA Longhorn Nationals. Don qualified #1 with a 9.43/146 in the sixteen-car field. He faced the old "Motown Missile" car now driven by John Livingston in the first round, and his 9.50/144.46 put John on the trailer. He soloed in round two with a 9.52/144.46 when Chuck Wright failed to appear. In the semifinals, he ran 9.48/146.57 to beat Mike Fons' 9.65/142 in the "Rod Shop" Challenger. This moved him into the final against Sox. Ronnie had been in the 9.60s throughout eliminations and it was no surprise when Carlton carded Low ET and Top Speed in the final with a 9.42/146.57 to beat Sox's 9.63/143 runner-up attempt. A week later (June 11), Don was at Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals. He qualified #2 with a 9.66 right behind Jenkins' 9.65. But in the opening round, the car broke and advanced opponent Don Grotheer into the next round. Don was at Bristol the following week after that, for the IHRA Springnationals, but once again he was driving his own car. He also drove his own car to a win at the NHRA Division 1 race at Maple Grove on June 24. He won the USRT race at York US 30 in July driving the "Missile.” All cars ran a qualifying round and his 9.46/145.63 beat Wally Booth's Gremlin at 9.61/140. In the semifinals, Don's 9.50/145.39 beat Dondero's 9.61/142 and set up another Sox vs. Carlton final. Sox was at the show running his new Duster and was running 9.40s. The final was close with Carlton's 9.36/146.10 edging Sox's 9.40/145 for the title. It was then off to Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals. It was a 32 car field and Carlton's 9.69 qualified #7. A first-round 9.88 beat Alban Gauthier and in round two his 9.72 beat Walker. In the third round, his 9.69 lost to Herb McCandless' 9.59. He jumped between his own car and the "Missile" so it was hard to tell which he was driving during the season, but at the High Altitude Nationals he won driving his own Demon. At the IHRA Empire Nationals, he lasted until the semifinals before losing to eventual winner Jenkins. But I'm not sure which car he was driving there. He was back in the "Missile" at Englishtown on August 6 for a USRT race where while he didn't reach the final he did run as well as 9.43/145 while beating Dondero. He did not attend the IHRA Summernationals at Dragway 42 on August 20.

Notes: Ran 9.822/141.28 at Indy 1972. He ran a best of 9.68/143 and was runner up at the 1972 IHRA Pro-Am Nationals. He also held the AHRA MPH record at 142.95 at West Palm Beach, Fla. Ran 9.699/142.18 at Gainesville for his best NHRA national event times. Bobby was at Dragway 42 on August 20 for the IHRA Summernationals. His 9.89 qualified #15, and his 10.06 beat Gordon Collett in the opening round. He failed to make the call for his second-round race against Stuart McDade. Shortly after that, he was at Indy for the NHRA US Nationals. Bobby had the quickest Mopar at 9.83/140.45. That qualified him #16 in the 32 car field. A 9.82 in round one, beat Jim Liebham, but a second 9.82 in round two fell to Rich Mirarcki's 9.74. A couple of weeks later (September 18), he was at Rockingham for the IHRA US Open. A strong 9.46 qualified #4 behind Ronnie Sox, Don Carlton, and Eddie Schartman. He beat Eddie Ratliff in the opening round with a 9.50/146.34, and in round two, Harold Denton fouled against him. Still, Bobby ran 9.44/146.57 to advance. Unfortunately, he lost to Carlton in the semifinal. Dallas International hosted the IHRA Nationals on October 1, and Yowell qualified #8 in the sixteen-car field with a 9.67. A 9.94 advanced in round one, but a 9.75/142.63 in the second round lost to Mike Fons' 9.58/144.

At Seattle for the NHRA Fallnationals, an 8.55/156.25 qualified #4, but the Volare broke in the first round, and slowed to 11.31/79.22 in a loss to Larry Johnson's 8.72/154. Notes: Gapp started the '73 season at Beeline for the AHRA Winternationals. He qualified #2 with a 9.31/144.23 behind Ronnie Sox's 9.17/148. In the first round, his 9.35/142.85 beat Mike Fons' 9.58/142. In round two, he beat Bob Lambeck's 9.58/143 with a 9.28/143.31, but he lost to Melvin Yow's 9.37/139 with an ailing 12.30-69.12 in the semifinals. At the NHRA Gatornationals, he qualified #1 with a 9.02/149.50. Gapp appeared to be on his way to his first win, running 9.05 in the first round, another 9.05/148.76 in round two over Bob Glidden, and yet another 9.05/148 in the semifinals over Sox. But in the final, he faced Don Nicholson's similar Pinto that had also been running 9.0s. Don left first and took the victory with a 9.04/150 over Gapp's slightly quicker 9.03/149.00. The team then went to Tulsa for the AHRA Grand American race. It was a good race for Gapp as he made it into the final against Don Grotheer. There he set Low ET with a 9.20 to take the victory over Grotheer's 9.35. In mid-April, Milan Dragway hosted a four-car show. Gapp had one of the cars competing there. In his first race, his 9.27/147 beat Wally Booth's 9.31/146. Gapp could not race his second race as he had broken his Lenco transmission. He had a conventional 4-speed transmission in the car for his third race against Bill Jenkins. He had gotten out on the "Grump," but the Vega soon overtook him and won their race. Another win followed at the second NHRA Division 3 race at National Trail. Wayne's 9.32 qualified #2 behind Glidden's 9.31. These two would work their way into the final. Wayne had defeated Arlen Vanke with a 9.35/143.76 in the opening round, and his 9.32/143.54 beat Bob Riffle's 9.37/144 in the semifinal. In the final, Gapp ran 9.42/143.76 for the win. There was quite a contest between Gapp, Glidden, and Nicholson to be the "top dog" among the Ford Pro Stocks. Early in the year, Nicholson had the edge. Then Gapp started putting up some wins and some big numbers. No sooner than that happened, Glidden started to show some strength. Only one of the three, Gapp, showed up at the USRT race at Maple Grove in June. Of course, he won. To reach the final, he ran 9.36/144.69, 9.29/141.95, and 9.24/147.05. Then his final round 9.26/146.34 beat Ken Dondero's 9.30/144 for the money. All three of the Ford runners showed up at National Trail for the NHRA Springnationals, and surprisingly, Gapp was the slowest of them in qualifying. His 9.48 qualified #10. That set up a first-round meeting with Nicholson, who qualified #2 with a 9.32. "Dyno" must have been a little nervous because he fouled away a 9.52/142 in their race while Gapp advanced with a 9.55/141.95. In round two, Wayne's 9.59/144.23 beat Sonny Bryant's 9.64/142, but his ride ended in the semifinals, where his 9.59/142.85 lost to Butch Leal's 9.42/147. So even though he qualified the slowest among the Ford fleet, he lasted the longest in eliminations as he had the only Ford that lasted past the first-round. Shortly after that, he went to Cayuga, Ontario, for the Canadian All-Pro Championships. He got an easy first-round win when Ron Hutter's Vega broke, but Wayne still ran a strong 9.23/145.63. In the second round, the tires broke loose, and he lost to Larry Huff's 9.59/144. His next win came at the third Division 3 race held in Milan. He had run a pair of 9.23's in eliminations over Yow and Glidden (who fouled). He then stopped low qualifier Don Carlton's 9.29/149 in the final with a 9.21/147. Edgewater held an eight-car show soon after, and Gapp was there. But he got crossed-up in the first round, and shut down against Huff. He came back out later for a consolation race and set Low ET with a 9.07 at 148.51. The second USRT race was held in Minnesota. Once again, Gapp was a strong contender. It was a sixteen-car field, and he lasted until the semifinals before Dave Stricker's 9.30 beat his 9.54. Gapp then won the AHRA Grand American held at Kansas City on July 8. He set Low ET and Top Speed at 9.23/147.39. In the final, his 9.36 dropped Scott Shafiroff's 9.41. Gapp didn't stick around long at the third USRT event held at Cayuga. He lost to Sox in the opening round. Another win followed at the Pro Stock Showdown race at Kil-Kare Dragway. This was an eight-car show, and Wayne's 9.33 in round one, beat Levi Holmes' 9.55. Dick Maskin got crossed-up against him in the semifinal, and Gapp's 9.28 advanced. He faced Roy Hill in the final, and Gapp made his best run of the weekend, a 9.21 to get the victory over Hill's 9.33. The NHRA Summernationals had almost 50 cars attempting to qualify for the 32 car field. The Gapp and Roush team was tough as Jack qualified one Pinto first with a 9.13 while Wayne qualified the other #8 with a 9.27. But things didn't go so well in eliminations. Roush broke a rear end in the first round, and Gapp's 9.28 lost to Stuart McDade's 9.19 in round two. On July 29, he was at Tri-City Dragway for the fourth NHRA Division Three race. The Pinto seemed a little down on power for this event as Wayne "only" qualified #4. In round one, his 9.25/147.29 defeated Maskin's 9.41/142. But in the semifinal, he shut it down early against Bob Riffle, who won with a 9.18. Things didn't go the greatest at the NHRA Grandnationals either. Wayne had the quickest Ford, qualifying #2 with a 9.06 behind Leal's Duster at a similar 9.06. But Gapp was gone after the first-round. He was the victim of a holeshot by Dave Kanners that saw the Hornet run 9.34 to win over Wayne's quicker 9.30. To add insult, the other two strong Ford guys both made it to the semifinals, and Glidden finished runner-up to Leal. Another early loss came at the fourth Division 5 race held at Minnesota. Wayne qualified #1 with a 9.36/146.10 (Low ET and Top Speed), but he fouled against Irv Beringhaus in the first round. The PHR Championships was the next stop, and things went much better at this meet. He opened eliminations with a 9.17/148.27, and in round two, his 9.20/148.02 beat Mike Fons' 9.33/144. A strong 9.15 at only 141.28 advanced in the semifinals when Joe Satmary fouled. Leal also ran a 9.15 in his semifinal win. But the race for the victory was diluted when the clutch broke in the Pinto, giving Leal an easy win. Gapp was again the quicker Ford qualifier at Tulsa for the AHRA National Challenge race. His 9.07/148.76 qualified #2 behind Leal's 9.07/149. Wayne beat Fred Shafer in the opening round with a 9.21/149, but he had a little nap in round two, where his 9.09/149 lost to Fons' 9.32/145. The following week was the NHRA US Nationals. Gapp qualified #2 with a 9.05/150.50. Fellow Ford runner Glidden qualified #1 with a 9.03/152. These two would meet in the final. Gapp's run to the final consisted of a 9.08 over Herb McCandless, a 9.15 over Grotheer, and a 9.10 over Melvin Yow. Both he and Paul Blevins ran 9.11 (Gapp at 149.75), but the Pinto got the win light. Glidden's semifinal win came with a 9.10. It was going to be a close race between the two, and it was. Unfortunately, Gapp's 9.09/149.50 lost to Glidden's 9.08/151. again. Wayne won NHRA Ontario over Glidden with his best times of the year, 8.870/152.02. The team had a Lenco this year from Pomona on! Wayne also ran 8.99 at Columbus.

Notes: Booth qualified #4 at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals with an 8.72. In the first round, he beat Gary Hansen before losing to a Richie Zul holeshot 8.81 that beat his quicker 8.79 in round two. Wally again qualified well at the NHRA Gatornationals, where he was #2 with an 8.72 behind "Dyno Don" Nicholson's 8.65. He went on to beat Roy Hill and Frank Iaconio in the first two rounds. He blew his engine on an 8.98 winning pass over Ken Dondero's off-pace 9.11 in the "Gapp and Roush" Pinto in the semifinals. He was unable to run in the final, and Nicholson soloed for the victory. Another runner-up finish followed at the NHRA Division 3 race at Indianapolis. There he lost to Bob Glidden in the final. Wally had been in six NHRA National Event finals in '76, so it what somewhat surprising that at the NHRA Cajun Nationals, he was in the last Pro Stock final round of his career. Baton Rouge only had eight-car PRO fields, and Booth's 8.66/156.25 qualified #2 behind Glidden's 8.62. These two would work their way to the final. Wally ran 8.79/154.53 in the opening round to beat Mike North, and a semifinal 8.82/154.37 advanced when Kevin Rotty fouled. In the final, Booth ran well, but his 8.73/153.58 finished runner-up to Glidden's 8.65/156. He set Low ET in qualifying #1 at the NHRA Springnationals with an 8.64. Booth lasted until the semifinals before his 8.78 lost to Nicholson's 8.76. He did win the third NHRA Division 3 race at Martin, Michigan. He also set Low ET and Top Speed there with an 8.71/157.34. Englishtown was NHRA's next stop for the Summernationals. Wally qualified #3 with an 8.70/156.52, but a sleepy 8.62/156 in the opening round lost to Joe Satmary's 8.78/154. He followed the NHRA tour to Canada for the Grandnationals. It was an eight-car field, and Wally's 8.67 qualified #3. He beat Bob Ingles in the first round, but he lost to Glidden in the semis. Shortly after that, he was at Suffolk for the NHRA Division 2 race. An 8.67 qualified #2 just behind Nicholson's 8.66. In round one, he beat Lamar Walden in Barry Setzer's Monza with an 8.80/153.58. But in the semifinals, he was late off the line, and his 8.85/152.05 lost to Ingles' 8.91/151. His next stop was at Indianapolis for the NHRA US Nationals. Wally qualified #8 with an 8.77. A first-round 8.92/150 beat Alban Gauthier, but in round two a late leaving 8.78/151 lost to Iaconio's slower 8.89/152. Wally did not make the long tow to Seattle for the NHRA Fallnationals, but he did go to Ontario Motor Speedway for the NHRA World Finals. An 8.80 qualified #6, but once again, he lost to a holeshot. This time Ronnie Manchester's 8.93 in the first round, stopped his quicker 8.83. In the NHRA season-long points chase, Booth finished sixth. The best NHRA national event speed was 156.79 at E-Town. Ran 8.62/156 at Englishtown 77, but that run lost in Round 1 to a massive Joe Satmary holeshot and an 8.78/154. Ran 8.61/157.34 at US 131 WCS, 8.75 at Pomona, 8.72 at Gainesville, 8.64 at Columbus, 8.62 at Englishtown, 8.77 at Indy, 8.77 at Sanair.

Notes: Herb qualified #6 at NHRA Columbus at 9.79 (speed unavailable). In round one, he lost a close one to Stu McDade, 10.02 to 10.05 (speeds unavailable). At Englishtown, the car really started to sing, and Herb went deep into eliminations, but he and the car became famous for a bumper dragging wheelstand when the wheelie bars broke. Herb qualified #3 at 9.570/143.54, behind Jenkins' dominant Vega and Ronnie Sox. Herb beat Sonny Bryant's Camaro in round one, 9.61/143.08 to 9.86/138. Round two saw him take out Melvin Yow, 9.57/143.54 to 9.76/137. He beat Don Carlton in round three, 9.59/143.54 to 9.69/143. He faced Bill Jenkins in the revolutionary Chevy Vega in the semis and lost 9.46/144 to 10.35/109 with the famous wheelstand. That was Herb's last NHRA national e event of the year. He was runner up to Jenkins at the Tulsa PRA race, where he ran a 9.424. Herb also ran 9.390 at Gateway.

Won final event of the year in 1972 over Larry Huff at OCIR All Pro Series on 12/31/72 with a 9.41/145.86. | Leal was tough to beat in '72. Although he didn't win any NHRA National events, he won everywhere else. He started the season by winning the OCIR All-Pro Opener. On the way to the final, he reset the track mph record to 146.10. A 9.56/144.65 in the final beat Bob Lambeck. He followed that up by winning the AHRA Winternationals at Beeline. There, he qualified #2 with a 9.62 just behind Don Nicholson's 9.60. "Dyno's" Maverick went out in the first round, with no oil pressure and Leal took over as the favorite. A first-round 9.61 beat Barrie Poole and in round two, he took out Reid Whisnant with a 9.57 (Low ET). He soloed in the semifinals and in the final, he was up against Bill Bagshaw. A 9.66/143.08 got the victory over Bagshaw's 9.75/141. At the second OCIR All-Pro race, he set Low ET and Top Speed in the final while beating John Petrie with a 9.58/144.00. On January 28, he was at Lions for the Grand Premiere race. His 9.54 qualified #1 and held for Low ET. Once again, he reached the final. There he ran Nicholson. Leal was late and Don left on time, recording a 9.59/142 for the win while Butch's 9.57/143.54 got him the runner-up spot. He then went to Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. It was a 32 car field and Leal qualified #2. He set Low ET and Top Speed in the second round with a 9.58/144.69 over Mike Fons. But in round three, he lost oil pressure and shut off, giving Arlen Vanke a solo into the semifinals. The following week (February 13), he was back at OCIR for the third All-Pro race. He set Low ET of the meet in qualifying #1 with a 9.58. Steady 9.7s in eliminations got him another win. A first-round 9.71 beat Lambeck while a semifinal 9.70/143.76 beat Bagshaw's 9.75/141. His final round opponent was Dick Landy. The two had a close race with Leal's 9.71/142.85 getting the win over Landy's 9.73/140. This was a pretty impressive track record considering it was only February. The winning continued in March when he won the Las Vegas National Open. He set Low ET and Top Speed as well. A final round 9.94 beat Don Lorentzen's Camaro. Then Butch went to Famoso for the Bakersfield March Meet. Of course, he won again. In the semifinals, his track record 9.69 at 142.40 (Top Speed) beat Landy. In the final, Lambeck fouled against him and Leal won with a 9.72/141.95. His next stop was at Fremont for the AHRA Northern Nationals. He qualified #3 in the sixteen-car field with a 9.56, but he got quicker as the race progressed. A first-round 9.44/146.34 (Top Speed) beat Bob Anderson while in round two, a 9.60/141.73 took out Henry Ponzo. He had a tough race in the semifinals against Ken Dondero driving "Dyno's" Cammer-powered Maverick. Leal set Low ET with a track record 9.40/146.10 to beat Dondero's hard-charging 9.46/145. After that, you would think he would go on and win over Lambeck in the final. Not so, Leal fouled and Bob went on to win with a 9.52/142. He was at Gainesville the following week (March 19), for the NHRA Gatornationals. Butch qualified an uncharacteristic #7 in the sixteen-car show with a 9.64. Even more uncharacteristic was his first-round loss to Melvin Yow when he missed a shift and slowed to 14.59. The final OCIR All-Pro race was run on March 25 and Leal set Low ET in qualifying #1 with a 9.64. But once again, he missed a shift, this time in the semifinals against Ken Van Cleave. Even with the loss, Leal had racked up enough points to win the OCIR All-Pro Pro Stock championship. He was runner-up to Bagshaw at the NHRA Division 7 Opener at Irwindale. Won the last race of 1972 over Larry Huff at OCIR on 12/31/72 with a 9.41/145.86 in the 1972 car.

Notes: Low qualifier at AHRA Fremont on 3/30/74 at 8.922/153.84. Also ran 8.93 at Fremont, then won the event over Sonny Bryant. | Bill ran 8.94 to qualify #4 at the AHRA Winternationals. Unfortunately, he was a little tired and his first-round 9.25/149.75 lost to Sam Scott's 9.45/144. At Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, a 9.034/150.75 qualified #6. In the first round, he beat Bob Coleman's 9.17/150 with a 9.12/149.25. In round two, a 9.22/144.92 lost to Wayne Gapp's 8.99/151. Bill did not run any other NHRA national events after the Winternationals. He was at Famoso for the Bakersfield March Meet where he cleaned house. He qualified #1 with a 9.10; the next closest qualifier was at 9.30. Bagshaw went on to win the event setting Low ET and Top Speed at 9.08/149.50 along the way. As mentioned above, he won the AHRA Northern Nationals at Fremont on March 17 with all the honors: Low ET, Top Speed and number one qualifier. He took his third big win of the young '74 season on April 6 at the AHRA Grand American at OCIR. Bill qualified #2 with a 9.00 and in the final, he beat low qualifier Larry Huff with a 9.04/152.54 (Top Speed). Bill went on to win the next AHRA Grand American as well. It was held at Green Valley in May. A 9.02 qualified #2 and he went on to beat Warren Johnson's 9.21 in the final with a 9.11. At NHRA's second Division 7 race held at Sacramento in June, Bill qualified #3. He won the event with a 9.21/145.17 in the final over Sonny Bryant's late 9.10/150. He won the next Division 7 race as well. It was held at Irwindale and there, his final round 9.11/149 stopped the Pinto of Lee Hunter. Bill had an unfortunate accident at St. Louis in July. He was there running at the AHRA Gateway Nationals when his car got out of control and crashed into the stands. Two people died and another 19 were injured in the crash.

Notes: Bob ran a 9.12 to qualify #8 at Beeline for the AHRA Winternationals. Unfortunately, the Dart broke on the line in the first round, giving Dale Falk a solo. At Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, a 9.23/149.25 qualified #14. He picked up to a 9.170/150.00 in the first round, but still lost to Bill Bagshaw's 9.12/149. That was the team's only NHRA national event appearance. This was a well-funded team with all new equipment. Ran 9.27 at Riverside, MS.

Notes: Won 75 IHRA All American Nationals at Bristol. Also 8.83 at Ontario 75. Low qualifier at Indy 1975 at 8.752/152.54. | Booth's season started at Beeline for the AHRA Winternationals. He ran 9.18 in the first round, over Rich Simone's Mustang II and in round two, a 9.17 beat Joe Satmary's 9.27. A 9.11/149.50 wasn't needed in the semifinals when Larry Huff fouled, but it put Booth in the final against Bob Glidden who had debuted his new '70 Mustang. Wally tried hard with a 9.12/149.25, but was still left behind Glidden's 8.99/152. At Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, Booth qualified #5 with an 8.92/151.77. He lasted until the second round before losing to Wayne Gapp's 8.89/154 with an 8.98/152.28. The next NHRA event was the Gatornationals held on March 16. Wally didn't qualify very well as his 8.98 put him in the #11 spot. This set up a first-round meeting with Larry Lombardo that the Hornet lost. During this, Dick Arons was working hard on the cylinder heads, lopping off and sectioning the heads for more power and as the season progressed the results were showing. In April, Wally won the NHRA Division 2 Opener at Warner Robins. He qualified #1 with an 8.95 and went into the final against Reid Whisnant where his 9.05/149.50 beat Reid's 9.06/152. In May he was at Dragway 42 for the AHRA Grandnationals. He qualified #6 in the eight-car show and got around Huff in the first round, before fouling away a 9.03 in the semifinal against Satmary's 9.15. At the NHRA Springnationals, a 9.06/149.00 qualified #7. In the first round, a 9.11/149.25 beat Satmary's 9.19/147. In round two, a 9.09/149.75 lost to Bill Jenkins' 9.03/150. At Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals, he qualified #11 with a 9.07. A first-round 9.06/149.75 lost to the "other" Hornet driver, Dave Kanners, who ran 9.02/150. Wally won the AHRA Drag Nationals at Kansas City on August 3. He beat Fred Shafer's Vega in the first round, with a 9.09 and another 9.09 in the semifinals beat Floyd Williams. In the final, he met Warren Johnson and the Hornet's 9.08/148.51 got the win over the Camaro's 9.13/149. Maryland International hosted the fourth NHRA Division 1 race on August 16, and Wally made it into the final where his 8.97/149.75 finished second best to Gapp's 8.90/147. The following week (August 24), he was at Martin, Michigan, for the PHR Championships. He qualified #6 with an 8.95 and improved to a first-round 8.92 over Paul Davis. Unfortunately, he fouled in round two against Shafer. Booth showed that the cylinder head work was paying off as he set a new NHRA record in qualifying #1 at the US Nationals with an 8.75. He lasted until the semifinals where he fouled away an 8.80 against eventual winner Gapp's 8.87. He then went to Rockingham for the IHRA US Open and proved that his times were no fluke. He qualified #1 with an 8.86 and a first-round 8.85/153.32 beat Charlie Castaldo. In round two, an 8.82/154.10 beat Fred Turner. In the semifinals, he kept the pressure on with another 8.82/153.32 over a fouling Scott Shafiroff. In the final, he was to have faced Lee Edwards' Camaro, but Lee had broken a timing chain in his semifinal run so Booth got to make a solo for the win. What a solo it was, as he ran Low ET and Top Speed with an 8.81/154.37 for the title. It was a strong showing for the little Hornet. At the NHRA Division 2 final at DeSoto Speedway, Wally set Low ET at 8.97, but in the final he decided to take a little nap and his 9.00/150.50 lost to Johnny Dowey's 9.24/145. At the NHRA World Finals, he qualified #3 with an 8.83/152.80, but he lost in the first round.

Notes: Also ran 8.97/150.75 in reaching the semis at IHRA Bristol June 1975. | At the IHRA Winternationals at Miami-Hollywood, Hill qualified #5 in the eight-car field, setting up a first-round meeting with low qualifier Bob Glidden, which he lost. Roy was at Gainesville in March for the NHRA Gatornationals. He was curious to see what NHRA's new 7.10 lb. weight break for the Hemi-powered cars would do for his performance. He ran 8.999 to qualify #12. Five Mopars made the field, but none were able to crack the top eight spots in qualifying. Hill's 9.02 in the first round, lost to Dave Kanners' Hornet at 8.98. The Pro Stock Open was run at Southeastern's 900-foot track in April. Roy did really well, running an opening round 7.51 over Billy Ewing and a semifinal 7.56 that narrowly beat Hubert Platt's 7.57. It was an all-Mopar final as he went up against Reid Whisnant for the title. Reid had been running a bit quicker on this day, and his final round 7.45 gave Hill's 7.60 the runner-up spot. He was at Rockingham in May for the IHRA Pro-Am Championships. Hill ran 9.13 in the first round, to beat Ronnie Sox, and in round two, he soloed with an 8.92 when Lamar Walden broke in the Barry Setzer Vega. His run ended in the semifinals, where his 8.88/150.00 lost to Glidden's identical 8.88 at 152. Roy did get the Top Speed of the meet at 154.37. Roy was at Suffolk for the NHRA Division 2 race, and while he qualified for the eight-car field, he failed to reach the finals. He qualified on the "bump" at Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals with a 9.15/149.50. Another 9.15/149.50 in the first round, beat Don Nicholson's late 9.05/149. In round two, he faced Glidden. Bob had problems and ran an off-pace 9.34 while Roy advanced with a 9.13. He had a bit more luck on his side in the semifinals when Richie Zul fouled away a 9.09, and Hill's 9.12 got the win light. This put him into the final against Bill Jenkins. Roy's 9.16/149.75 finished runner-up to Bill's 8.98/152. At Bristol, for the IHRA Springnationals, he ran 9.01 to qualify #5 in the sixteen-car show, but once again, he failed to reach the finals. On July 13, he was at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals. He qualified in the unlucky #9 spot with a 9.04/151.51, setting up a first-round meeting with Wayne Gapp's low qualified 4-door Maverick. Hill tried hard in their match, but his 8.990/152.54 finished behind Gapp's 8.96/152. After Englishtown, most Pro Stock racers made a stop at Maryland International for the US Pro Stock Open on July 18. It was a sixteen-car field, and Hill won the show. He started with a 9.03 over Carl Hobson, and in round two, he ran 8.98 while losing to Richie Zul's 8.94. But he got back in on the "break rule" as Low ET loser from the previous round when Jenkins broke and could not run in the semifinals. Roy made the best of his second chance by beating Nicholson's 8.97 in the semifinals with a quick-leaving 9.03. He made his best run of eliminations in the final, where an 8.97/151.76 got him the victory over Scott Shafiroff's 8.99/150. Roy got a runner-up finish at the IHRA Nationals at Dragway 42 in August. He qualified #4 in the eight-car field with a 9.01/153.58 and then beat Tim Lysikowski in the first round, with a 9.12/153.58. A 9.06 in the semifinals beat Larry Huff's quicker 8.94. This put Hill into the final against Nicholson. The two had a close race, but "Dyno's" 9.00/154 prevailed over Roy's 9.04/153.84. | Roy ran at Southeastern Dragway in April at an eight-car show. He ran at least as quick as 7.56 at the 1000 foot track. | Best NHRA national event times were the 8.990/152.54 in round one, at Englishtown.

Notes: Obtained photograph of "Millwee's Magic" 72 Hemi Cuda from John Millwee, now living in Springville, California. The photo is the only known photo of the car; it was taken by an unknown photographer. The car is pictured staged next to Sox and Martin during pro stock finals at 1971 Supernationals, Ontario, California. John tells me that S&M built his car, and they had just delivered the car to California. The car was driven by Herb McCandless, an employee of S&M at this race only, to demonstrate the car's capability. Geno Redd was to take over driving for the 1972 season. John says the car ran consistently quicker and faster than Ronnie Sox all weekend because it had been fitted with Lenco trans. Sox was still running a manual shifted 4-speed. John said that in the final race, shown in the photo, Herb left on Ronnie, but the car slowed slightly at the top end allowing "The Boss" to take the win. Geno Redd totaled the car in testing the next day at OCIR and was fatally injured. Since this posting, two other photos of this car have appeared on the internet. I have recently obtained from John Milwee various receipts from the construction of the car as well as the time slips from Piedmont Dragstrip in Burlington, North Carolina, for the first seven shakedown runs on the car driven by one of S&M's drivers, likely Herb McCandless, and one slip marked Geno's first run. - Ray Ahrens | The car ran 9.590/143.08 at NHRA Ontario. | John Millwee passed away on August 28, 2017, in Springville, California.

Notes: Reid debuted this trick Don Hardy-built Duster in 1973, and he was tough to beat this year. His cars ran well, and he always had one of the strongest Mopars. He started the season by winning the Warner Robins Grand Opener in January. He qualified #1 in the eight-car field with a 9.45. Reid got a first-round single and then set Low ET in round two with a 9.42 over Lamar Walden. A 9.50 won the event over Buck Pike, who fouled in the final. In March, he was at Lakeland for the IHRA Winternationals. Another 9.45 qualified #6, and he lasted until round two, where Don Carlton's 9.25/132 beat Reid's 9.41/144.00. After that, it was off to Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals. A 9.23 qualified #7 and an even better 9.21 beat Ronnie Lyles' 9.29 in the first round. In the second round, he lost to Ronnie Sox's 9.20/147 with a 9.33. In April, he won the Division 2 Opener at Phenix City, where a final round 9.39 beat Ben Hicks. Still, in April, he won another race at Warner Robins, this time beating Don Nicholson in the final. Reid got stuck in traffic on the way to Englishtown for the Summernationals. He arrived late and missed the tech inspection. Two weeks later (July 29), he was back in the winner's circle at Miami's NHRA Division 2 race. He qualified #1 with a 9.24, and in the opening round, his 9.23/148.02 (Top Speed) beat Steve Bagwell. He ran a track record 9.19 at 148.02 in round two to defeat Oscar Robert's 9.54/143. Reid got the "odd-lot" solo in the semifinal and advanced with an easy 9.85/128.38. He beat a fouling William Paris in the final with a 9.26/147.54. Reid was at Blaney in October for the Dixie Nationals. He beat Stuart McDade in the final. Both had tied for Low ET at 9.14. His next stop was at Amarillo for the NHRA World Finals. He qualified #7 with a 9.56, but an off-pace 9.95/141.95 lost to Royce Freeman's 9.84/136 in the opening round. Shortly after that, he was at Lakeland for the IHRA Nationals. It was a sixteen-car show, and in the opening round, his 9.18/148.51 beat Carl Ruth. But in round two, his 9.19/148.51 lost to Don Carlton's 9.14/149. Reid was going to run at Ontario for the NHRA Supernationals, but they were postponed for a week, and he left to run the Turkey Trot National Open at Gainesville that was run on the same day. It turned out to be a wise choice, as he qualified #1 for the eight-car field with a 9.12/149.50. A 9.10/150.00 beat Oscar Roberts in round one, and a 9.04/151.00 stopped Roy Hill in the semifinals. He went up against Harold Clark in the final, and Clark fouled while Reid ran 9.02/151.00 (Low ET and Top Speed) for the victory. He picked up one last win before the season ended. He won the Snowbird National Open on December 2. Once again, he ran strong. He set Low ET and Top Speed in qualifying with an 8.99/151.77. A 9.04 beat William Paris in round one, while a 9.03 in the semifinal took out Kenny Hahn. He faced the Pinto of Hubert Platt in the final, and it was no contest as Reid's 9.07/151.51 easily dispatched Platt's 9.42/144. Reid's best NHRA National Event times were 9.160 at Sanair and 150.00 at Ontario.

Notes: Also ran a legal 9.40 and 9.56 at PRA Tulsa, 9.60 at Minnesota, 9.741 at NHRA Pomona CA 2/72. On April 16, Landy was at Englishtown for an eight-car show. Unfortunately, he broke his driveshaft in his first-round race against Ed Schartman. Early in May, he was at Capitol Raceway for the second USRT race. All the cars were NHRA legal, but rosin was allowed to be laid down. Landy's 9.46 qualified #3. The top four qualifiers squared off for the first-place money. Dick's 9.47/145.20 defeated Schartman's off pace,10.29/109, and moved him into the final to face Bill Jenkins. The two had a close race, but Jenkins' 9.47/145 took the win over Dick's 9.48/144.96. Landy qualified #4 at Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals. Irv Beringhaus fouled against him in the opening round, and his 9.80/141.50 advanced. In round two, his 9.70-beat Carmen Rotonda's 9.76. But he got beat off the line in the semifinal, where his 9.79 lost to Don Grotheer's 9.80. There was a highly publicized match race between Bill Jenkins and Butch Leal run at OCIR on November 15. The track held an NHRA "legal" race that had over 30 cars attend along with the match race. Landy won the race running times of 9.31, 9.32, and 9.39 twice. Not sure if OCIR management was on the ball making sure the cars were 100% legal, or if Chrysler was really not as bad off with the NHRA rules as they would have led you to believe.
