Notes: Joe ran at Beeline for the AHRA Winternationals in January In the first round, he put a holeshot on second qualifier Wayne Gapp and held on for the win. In the second round, his 9.27 lost to Wally Booth's 9.17. At the NHRA Winternationals at Pomona, he qualified #9 with a 9.03/151.26. He lost early. Joe ran well at the AHRA Grandnationals at Dragway 42, West Salem, Ohio, in May. He qualified #4 in the eight-car show and then beat Floyd Williams' Pinto in the first round, with a 9.04/152.82. In the semifinals, he needed only a 9.15 to advance when Booth fouled. In the final, he ran Ken Dondero in Bill Jenkins' Vega. An 8.94/154 by Dondero gave Satmary's 9.12/153.32 the runner-up spot. Joe barely made the field at the NHRA Springnationals with a 9.15/148.27 for the #15 spot. A first-round 9.19/147.78 lost to Booth's 9.11/149. Joe failed to qualify at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals, but he made the show at Maryland International for the US Pro Stock Open. Unfortunately, he fouled in the first round. At the PHR Championships, Satmary qualified in the dreaded #9 spot with a 9.02. That made him run low qualifier, Bob Glidden, in the first round. Bob ran 9.02 to beat Joe's 9.24. |

Notes: Qualified 15th at Indy with a 9.262 148.51 and went to the semifinals before falling to Glidden. NHRA best at Indy of 9.160/150.50. That was the only NHRA national event Joe raced at in 1973. Ran 9.326/147.78 at National Challenge 73. Satmary started the '73 season at Beeline Dragway for the AHRA Winternationals. It was a sixteen-car field and his 9.67/144.69 qualified #14. In the opening round of eliminations, his 9.79/140.18 fell to Dick Landy's 9.39/145.Joe was at Minnesota Dragways for the fourth NHRA Division Five race. He made it into the final, where he faced the Mopar of Larry Huff. Unfortunately, Satmary fouled away a 9.52/143.54 in their final round match. It was worth the shot as Huff took the victory with a 9.42/144. He was at St. Louis on August 5 for the AHRA Gateway Nationals. 24 cars were attempting to qualify for the sixteen-car field. Joe's 9.39 qualified #8, and in round one, his 9.37 beat Tommy Kendrick. But in round two, he fouled against Jack Roush, who ran 9.04/150 to advance. A week later (August 12), he was at Martin, Michigan, for the PHR Championships. He survived the first-round easily, and in round two, both he and Dick Maskin ran 9.54, with the Camaro coming out on top. But in the semifinals, Joe once again fouled. This time losing with a 9.44/148.27 while his opponent, Wayne Gapp, won with a 9.15/141. |

Notes: Won NHRA Pro Stock Open at Dover Drag Strip in April 1970 with a best of 10.15/138.50. One of the original '68 Hurst Hemi SS/B cars. | Miller started the '70 season at Beeline for the AHRA Winternationals run near the end of January. He ran well, lasting until the second round before losing to eventual winner Ronnie Sox. Ed qualified #13 at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals with a 10.40. He lasted until the second round before losing to Sox. At Gainesville, for the NHRA Gatornationals, his 10.04 qualified #5, but in the opening round, he was upset by Herb McCandless. Herb’s 10.24 beat Miller's 10.25. He won the AHRA Grand American at Lions on March 8, stopping "Dyno Don" Nicholson in the final, and running quicker than the AHRA ET record and setting the AHRA MPH record at 9.93/139.75. In April, he went to his first NHRA Pro Stock Circuit race at Dover Dragstrip. He ran an opening round 10.37/136.03 to beat Allen Phillips in the "Baltimore Bandit" and a semifinal 10.15/134 advanced when Ken Montgomery missed a shift. He faced Bob Banning Jr. in the final. Bob got a huge jump off the line and led by almost a full car length. But Ed had the power to pull past and his 10.20/138.50 got the victory over Bob's 10.60/132. Shortly after that, he was at Rockingham for the AHRA Pro-Am Championships. Things didn't go so well there. While he was doing a burnout to prepare for his first-round match against Don Grotheer, the car went into a wheelstand. When the car landed, it busted its oil pan and he was unable to run. The next AHRA Grand American race was run at Frontier Raceway. Miller’s 10.48 beat Harry Kalwei in the first round, before losing a close race in round two where his 10.49 finished second best to Jim Hayter's 10.48. His next stop was at York US 30 for the Super Stock Magazine Nationals. There was a large turnout of cars (44), and they ran them all. Ed lost to Nicholson in the second round, but he got back in on the "break rule.” But he didn't hang around for long, as in the next round, he lost to Dave Lyall. Ed’s best NHRA times were 10.047/137.82 at the Gatornationals. |

Ronnie Sox beat him in round one, there, but Melvin made it to the semis at NHRA Dallas (only to fall to Sox again). He qualified #13 at Englishtown at 9.876/138.38, but did not show for round one. Earlier in the year, he had made it to round 3 at Pomona. He made it to round two at the World Finals. |

Notes: Reid’s 9.50 was at NHRA national record set at Suffolk. Also ran 9.540/144.92 at Tulsa. Ran 9.584 and 9.586 at 144.69 for a new NHRA MPH record at Phenix City, AL. | After two years of almost total dominance of Pro Stock racing, the Mopar Hemi was now faced with the new challenge of the small block Vega of Bill Jenkins. The Vega of Jenkins was a completely new type of Pro Stock car using a custom chassis whereas the other cars were still based on factory chassis. The Mopars were still a force to be reckoned with, but the clock was now running out for them. Reid’s Duster was a strong runner in '72. His season started at Beeline for the AHRA Winternationals. There, he qualified #4 with a 9.70 and lasted until the second round before losing to the eventual winner Butch Leal. He then went to Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, where he qualified #8 in the 32 car field. He lasted until the third round where his late 9.82 lost to Don Grotheer's 9.93. Early in March, he was at Lakeland for the IHRA Winternationals. A 9.62/143.76 qualified #2 behind Ronnie Sox's 9.56/144, but he broke a clutch against Joe Weis in the first round. Shortly after that, he was at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals, where he qualified #5 with a 9.59. A slightly better 9.58 in the opening round beat Dick Landy's 9.87 and in round two, he did what few people would do in '72: he beat the "Grump.” His 9.63/140.18 held off Jenkins' 9.77/141. The Vega had blown a head gasket on the run. After that, you would think that Reid would go on to win, but unfortunately, he broke against Melvin Yow in the semifinals. On April 9th, he was at the NHRA Division 2 Opener at Phenix City. Reid set Low ET and Top Speed at 9.63/144.00 (track speed record) on his way to a final round showing against Yow. At the second Division 2 race held at Suffolk in May, Reid failed to reach the final, but he did reset the NHRA Pro Stock record to 9.50. He also had Top Speed at 144.23. Reid was overdue for a win; it finally came on May 20 at the Division 2 race at Blaney Dragstrip. He also reset the NHRA Pro Stock speed record to 144.69. In the final, opponent Joe Fisher broke and Whisnant ran 9.57/144.23 for the victory. His next stop was at Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals. He only qualified #11 and that set up a first-round race with Sox who qualified #3. Sox’s 9.71 beat Reid's 9.78 to send him home early. The following week (June 18), he was at Bristol for the IHRA Springnationals. There were 32 cars attempting to qualify for the sixteen-car field and Reid qualified #9. That was not good as he faced low qualifier Jenkins in round one. Reid tried hard in their race, maybe a little too hard, as he missed third gear and lost to Jenkins' 9.68/144. Another win came at the Warner Robins National Open on June 25. There, a final round 9.73/138.88 beat Bruce Walker's 9.85/138. At Englishtown, for the NHRA Summernationals, a 9.70 qualified #9 in the 32 car field. He beat Dutch Irrgang in the opening round, but in round two, he came up against Jenkins again and his 9.72/140.84 lost to the Vega's 9.52/137. |

Notes: Fast Eddie had his Boss 429 Maverick running some stout times in '72. Wayne qualified #15 at the NHRA Winternationals with 9.890 but lost to Don Carlton in round two. At the Gatornationals in March, a tube-framed Vega made it through tech, but Eddie's car had Comet tail lights, so it flunked tech and was forced to run B/Gas. He ran a 9.60 best and finished runner-up in Modified Eliminator. In May, at the Olympics of Drag Racing, Schartman ran a 9.63/142 best and collected runner-up money on Sunday. On June 4, Schartman was at Englishtown for a Pro Stock race. Unfortunately, his 9.85 in the first round lost to Carmen Rotonda's 9.80. Eddie did set Top Speed, however, at 140.40. At the first USRT event at Phenix City, he ran well but failed to make it into the finals. At the AHRA Tulsa National Challenge, he qualified #12 with a 9.60/144.46 but fouled out in round one. At the USRT Factory showdown at Capitol, Ed qualified #1 with a 9.41, but against Dick Landy in round one, he missed a shift and lost. On September 18, at the IHRA US Open, Schartman qualified #3 with a 9.46. Ran a first-round 9.48/144 and a second-round 9.50/144.92 before losing to Ronnie Sox in the semifinal. |

Notes: The Gapp and Roush team entered the '74 season with three cars. They had the seasoned Pinto from '73 along with a new one. Along with the Pintos, they had a Mustang II. The team was not sure how the 351 ran with the new NHRA weight break of 6.75 lbs per cubic inch, but Gapp mentioned in January that if the small cars were uncompetitive, he would build a four-door Maverick to take advantage of the 6.45 factor for cars with over a 105" wheelbase. Wayne started the season at Beeline in January for the AHRA Winternationals. He qualified #3 with an 8.92. In the first round, he beat Warren Johnson's Vega with a 9.06/149.02. An 8.94/152.02 took care of Dave Kanners' 9.03 in the AMC Hornet in round two. But in the semifinals, his 9.03/151.26 lost to fellow Pinto campaigner Bob Glidden's 8.94/153. At Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, Gapp qualified #2 with an 8.95/151.77. A first-round 8.920/151.77 beat Kelly Chadwick's Vega at 9.36. In round two, he ran 8.99/151.00 to easily cover Bill Bagshaw's 9.22/144. A semifinal 9.00/150.75 beat Scott Shafiroff's 9.22/144 to put the Pinto in the final. There he had to run Bill "Grumpy" Jenkins. It was a close race with Bill's Vega barely winning with an 8.93/152, just edging the Pinto's 8.94/152.02. Gapp and Roush brought two cars to the Gatornationals, with Wayne driving the Pinto and Jack driving their new Mustang II. They qualified #1 and second with Gapp's 8.99/152.54 getting the pole. Gapp advanced past the first-round with a 9.19 when Glidden lost a transmission. But the Pinto's engine was ailing, and the car couldn't make the call for the second round. Gapp won the IHRA Southern Nationals at Charlotte in April. It was an eighth-mile track, and Wayne qualified #2 with a 5.90. He ran a 6.02/116.42 in the first round, to beat Ronnie Sox's brother, David. In the semifinals, a 6.06/117.95 beat Sam Carroll's 6.16. In the final, he faced Roy Hill's Duster. Roy ran 6.05/117 but lost to Gapp's Low ET and Top Speed of the meet run of 5.80/123.11. Wayne was at Rockingham on May 12 for another IHRA race, the Pro-Am Nationals. He qualified #5 with a 9.12/150.00, but he failed to reach the finals. Ran IHRA records of 5.80/123.11 on the eighth-mile in winning the IHRA Southern Nationals at Charlotte in late March 1974. It was the Pinto that set the record (not the Mustang II). There is footage of the race on YouTube. Wayne began running the four-door Maverick at NHRA Columbus in June. |

Notes: Won Summernatationals, defeating #1 and #2 qualifiers on holeshots. Lombardo was making his first national event appearance behind the wheel of Bill Jenkins' Vega at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals. He had trained to drive the car for two weeks prior to the race. His 9.04/152.02 qualified #5. In the opening round, his 9.07/150.75 defeated Scott Shafiroff's 9.17/148. He and low qualifier Bob Glidden had a close race in the second round that saw them both run 9.13. Lombardo got the "win" light. In the semifinal, Larry's 9.14 beat Dave Kanners' 9.30. He faced #2 qualifier Wayne Gapp in the final. Gapp had run quicker than Lombardo in all three of his races in reaching the final. But Larry strapped a holeshot on Gapp and held on. His 9.11/150.00 beat the Maverick's 9.02/151. At the NHRA Grandnationals, Larry's 8.96/152.54 qualified #3. In the first round, an easy 9.07/150.25 beat Jerry Miller, but in round two, his 9.05 lost to Paul Blevins' slower 9.15. Betcha the "Grump" had something to say to Larry after that one. The following week (August 11), they went to Martin, Michigan, for the PHR Championships. Lombardo's 8.93 qualified #2 behind Gapp's 8.89. |

Notes: Ken ran an 8.98 to qualify #5 at Beeline for the AHRA Winternationals. In the first round, a 9.08/152.02 beat Tim McNally's 10.25/128. A second round 9.10/152.54 lost to eventual winner Bob Glidden's 8.91/152. Ken then went to Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals where he again ran an 8.98 (152.02) in qualifying. That number was good for the #4 spot in the field. He slowed to a 9.31/148.02 in the first round, that lost to Scott Shafiroff's 9.18/150. |

Notes: 1978 photo. | This was the calm before the storm. The Reher-Morrison team ran well in '79, but nothing forecast just how well they would do in '80. Driver Lee Shepherd started the season by qualifying #2 at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals with an 8.61/157.34. An opening round 8.65/155.97 advanced over a fouling Gordie Rivera, but in round two the Camaro broke and slowed to 9.03 in a loss to Joe Satmary. At the NHRA Gatornationals, Lee's 8.62/156.25 qualified #4. But the team was unable to show for the first-round race against Don Campanello. Shepherd won the NHRA Division 4 race at LaPlace, stopping Shelby Jester in the final. At the rain-delayed NHRA Cajun Nationals, Lee qualified #3 in the eight-car field, and he got a solo run in the first round. In the semifinals, he beat Wally Booth's 8.81 AMC effort with an 8.72/154. This put Shepherd into the finals against Bob Glidden (a forecast of the next two seasons). Shepherd tried hard with an 8.71/155.44, but few could keep up with Glidden in '79 and Bob's 8.56 at a shutting off,149 got the victory. The team then stopped off at St. Louis on June 3 for the AHRA Gateway Nationals. Lee reset both ends of the AHRA record during qualifying with an 8.59/159.30. He then ran 8.65 and 8.73 to reach the final. His final round opponent was Bobby Marriott and Lee's 8.69 defeated Marriott's 8.86 for the victory. A week later (June 10), they were at Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals. An 8.71/154.63 qualified #5. In round one Shepherd's 8.85/152.02 beat Campanello's 8.87/153, but in round two an 8.82/153.06 was no match for eventual winner Glidden's 8.66/152. Alamo Dragway was the next stop for the AHRA Nationals. The team dominated. Lee qualified #1 with an 8.65/156.80, and he set Low ET and Top Speed to the final with an 8.61/159.56 that beat Marriott's 8.71. They did not go to Denver for the NHRA Mile High Nationals. Shepherd was disappointed when the Camaro broke in the final against Mike Oppen at the Amarillo Division 4 race. |

Notes: Ken was in Connecticut in April for a best of three match against Mike Fons in the "Motown Missile." Despite being viewed as the "underdog" in this match. Ken came out on top. Dondero was at Englishtown in June for an eight-car event. All cars were to run three rounds of racing. In his first race, a 9.27/145.65 beat Rich Maskin who lost an engine in his Hornet. Ken's 9.26/147.29 in his second race lost to Paul Blevins' 9.15/147. In his last race, Dondero got out on Eddie Schartman, where Ken's 9.28/147.78 held off "Fast Eddie's" quicker 9.20/147. Ran 9.180/147.05 at NHRA Indianapolis IN 9/01/73. Photo from 1973 Pro Stock Match Racing, US 131, Martin, Michigan, with Don Nicholson tuning. |

Notes: Kevin ran at the AHRA Winternationals, but in the second round, Larry Lombardo ran a 9.05 that beat his 9.20. Larry lost a motor on the run and Kevin was reinstated. He didn't hang around long as in the semifinal Bob Glidden dropped a 9.02/150 on his 9.16/150.00 to finish his day for good. In May he ran at the Fremont Northern Nationals and made it all the way into the final before losing to Dick Landy's 8.90/154. Another runner-up finish came in June at the first NHRA Division 7 race at Sacramento. He ran 9.14/150.76 in the final that lost to Brad Yuill's 9.10/148. |

Notes: Photo from the 1975 NHRA Springnationals, National Trail Raceway, Columbus, Ohio. Times and info from National Dragster, 8/25/75. | Reid's Duster was still pretty stout in '75. At the IHRA Winternationals, things didn't go so well as he was the second alternate for the eight-car field. He was aided by a new NHRA weight break of 7.10 lbs. per cubic inch that went into effect at the Gatornationals in March. There, he qualified #14 with a 9.05 and was one of five Mopars that made the show. Only two survived round one and Reid was one of them when his quick-leaving 9.07 beat Bert Straus's 9.01. In round two, he came up against Wayne Gapp. Wayne had been deep into the eights (8.76 in qualifying, 8.88 round one), so Reid took a gamble on the tree and fouled. At the first NHRA Division 2 race at Warner Robins, Whisnant reached the final. He set Low ET in the first round, with an 8.93 and in the semifinals, his 8.97/151.77 beat Joe Varde. He faced low qualifier Wally Booth in the final. It was a good race, but the AMC's 9.05/149 got the victory over Reid's runner-up 9.06/152.28. He was at Rockingham for the IHRA Pro-Am Championships, but a 9.12/151 in the first round, lost to Bob Glidden's 8.93/149. Whisnant went to Suffolk for the next NHRA Division 2 race, but he failed to reach the finals. He was the first alternate at Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals. At Englishtown, he had the quickest Mopar in the field for the NHRA Summernationals when he ran 9.04/150.75 for the #8 spot. Unfortunately, a 9.08/151.26 fell to Charlie Castaldo's 9.09/150 in the first round. He qualified #11 for the 32-car field at Indianapolis for the NHRA US Nationals with a 9.04. He improved to 9.02/150.75 in the first round, to beat Bob Ingles, but he lost to eventual winner Gapp in round two. Reid was back at Rockingham the following week (September 7) for the IHRA US Open race. An 8.96 qualified #4 and in the first round, his 9.00/153.06 beat Kenny Hahn's 9.12/150. He faced another Mopar in round two and again he won; this time his 9.02/151.51 beat Bobby Yowell's 9.12/150. He faced Lee Edwards' Camaro in the semifinals and despite running a good 9.01/151.25, he lost to Edwards' better 8.94/152. Whisnant made it to the semifinals at the final NHRA Division 2 race at Desoto when his car failed to fire. Reid did not make the long trip to Seattle for the NHRA Fallnationals, but he was at Ontario for the NHRA World Finals. A 9.05 qualified him #14 in the field, but he lost to Lee Hunter in the first round. While the regular NHRA season ended, it didn't keep Reid from racing. In November, he won the Southeast National Open at Warner Robins. He qualified #1 with an 8.96/151.77 and beat George Pitts in the final. Another win came at the Snowbird National Open at Desoto. There, he set Low ET and Top Speed at 8.99/152.54 before stopping Hahn's 9.15/148 in the final with a 9.00/149.25. Best NHRA national event times were 9.020 at Indy and 152.80 at the World Finals. |

Notes: We have a photo from Indy 1975. Also 9.22 at IHRA Rockingham 75. Used 222 comp number also. | Lamar was at Warner Robins for the Southern Pro Stock Championships in July. He qualified #2 with a 9.00/151.50 behind Roy Hill's 8.92. On August 17, he was at Riverside Raceway for the NHRA Division Four race. Only four Pro Stock cars showed, and Lamar's 9.15/149.76 qualified last. He fouled against Jerry Haas in the first round. |

He lost to Tom Chelbana in the first round, via a monumental holeshot, 8.75 to 8.62. At the Bakersfield March Meet, he qualified with an 8.58, but he fouled against Sonny Bryant in the first round. He was at Fremont for the NHRA Division 6 race in April. He qualified #1 with an 8.50/159.87 (Low ET and Top Speed) and made his way to the final, where he beat his brother Mark for the title. Brad qualified #1 at the second NHRA Division 6 race at Seattle with an 8.52/159.57 (Low ET and Top Speed), but he fouled against Gary Pugh in the first round. At the third NHRA Division 6 race at OCIR, Brad qualified #2 with an 8.57/157.34 behind Kevin Rotty's 8.50. He advanced to the final with runs of 8.61/157.34 and 8.54/158.17 to meet up with Rotty in the final. Brad was a little slower than Rotty in eliminations, and he attempted to compensate, but he pushed the 'tree a little too hard and fouled away an 8.70/154.90 while Kevin got the victory with an 8.48/158. Brad was in the family Camaro at Indy and Ontario. Formerly listed 8.425/161.57. Removing those times until we get confirmation. |

Notes: Bruce ran both the Camaro and the new Vega in 1972. Confirmed 9.48 at OCIR per Gordy Faust's recollection (at the all-Chevy big block contest which was expected to be dominated by Sonny Bryant and Richie Zul). Qualified #5 at NHRA Ontario 1972 at 9.507/144.69. Ran 9.540/144.00 in a Round 1 holeshot loss to Dick Brannan’s 9.640/143.08. Also ran 143 at OCIR 1972. Early qualifying leader at IHRA Bristol 10/13/72 at 9.78/140.18. | At the NHRA Springnationals, Bruce qualified #9 at 9.820, which set up a first-round meeting with low qualifier Bill Jenkins. Walker’s 9.87 lost to "Grumpy's" 9.77. He was at Bristol for the IHRA Springnationals. There were 32 cars attempting to qualify for the sixteen-car field and his 9.90 qualified #7. That was pretty impressive as he was ahead of Don Carlton, Don Nicholson, Roy Hill, Bobby Yowell, Reid Whisnant, and others. An opening round 9.93 beat Linwood Craft, but a second round 9.83/138.86 lost to Herb McCandless' 9.75/141. It was still a good showing as he had the only big block Chevy that made the field. On June 25, Bruce was at the Warner Robins National Open. He made it to the final where his 9.85/138.67 finished runner-up to Whisnant's 9.73/138. | Originally listed 9.425 for this year. Listing the 9.48 from OCIR until we get confirmation. |

Notes: Lee ran 8.67 under AHRA rules for their Tucson event in January. He then qualified #10 at NHRA Pomona at 8.978/152.54. In round one, Lee fouled against Warren Johnson; WJ's 8.97/155.17 won despite Lee's better 8.82/154. He qualified #7 at NHRA Gainesville at 8.829/154.63. In round one, he beat Reid Whisnant, 8.87/151.77 to 8.96/152. Bob Glidden ended Lee's day in round two, 8.87/154 to 8.96/152. Lee qualified #15 at Indy with an 8.978, but that was in his new Vega. |

Notes: Shelby started his season at Tucson Dragway for the AHRA Winternationals. He lasted until round two before his 9.36 lost to Lee Edwards' 8.96. He then went to Beeline Dragway for the Phoenix Winter Classic. He qualified #11, but in the opening round, his 9.21/148.02 fell to Richie Zul's 8.87/154. Jester qualified #15 at the NHRA Winternationals at 9.046/149.50. In round one, he lost to Roy Hill, 8.86/155 to 9.150/151.77. Shelby found the eights in Gainesville, qualifying #13 at 8.961/152.80. He shocked the crowd with a holeshot round win over Wayne Gapp in round one, 8.94/151.77 to 8.92/152, but he fouled against Larry Lombardo in round two, losing an 8.81/153 to 8.93/153.58 contest. Shelby won LaPlace Dragway WCS in 3/76 with an 8.89/153 (Low ET and Top Speed). He was at Amarillo Dragway in the first week of May for the IHRA World Nationals. In the opening round, his 8.85/152.68 lost to Wayne Gapp's 8.69/157. Back at LaPlace, for the NHRA Cajun Nationals, his 9.01/151.00 in the first round lost to low qualifier Wally Booth's 8.82/153. He was at El Paso Dragway for the NHRA Division Four race in mid-May. Unfortunately, his off-pace 10.42/133.92 lost to Kelly Chadwick's 9.85/133 in round one. On June 6, he won the NHRA Division Four race at Baton Rouge. His 8.93/154.63 (Top Speed) beat Lee Shepherd, who broke in the final. Shelby qualified #12 at NHRA Columbus with a 9.079/151.77. In round one, he lost to Bob Glidden, 8.89/152 to 9.07/151.51. This car was wrecked twice, once at the 1976 US Nationals, due to a failed rear tire that rolled on the rim and went flat. He was the third alternate at Indy at 9.011/149.75. At the time, he was top 5 in the national points and still finished the season in tenth place. Shelby won the NHRA Division 4 Pro Stock Championship in this car. He carried the number 10 on the Shag at the start of the 1977 season.
