Notes: Don started the season in a '69 Cuda that he raced at Beeline for the AHRA Winternationals. He lost in the first round, to Ronnie Sox. At Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, he qualified #7 with a 10.22 and lasted until round two, where he lost to Wally Booth's Camaro. On February 15, he was at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals. A 10.12 qualified #7, and he advanced past round one when Sam Carroll fouled against him. In round two, he lost to Don Carlton driving one of Sox and Martin's cars. Rockingham hosted the AHRA Pro-Am Championships in April, and Don was there. He advanced when Ed Miller pulled a wheelstand and busted his oil pan on the landing in the first round. But in round two, he fouled against Sox. He had some bad luck at the fourth AHRA Grand American race at Frontier Raceway. Don qualified #4, but before eliminations, he was changing engines. The hoist broke and dropped the engine onto the grill and radiator support on the front of the car. The damage was too much for the car to run. Grotheer was at Dallas for the Division 3 Opener on May 3. He lasted until the semifinals, where his 10.64 lost to Jim Hayter's 10.32. A week later, he was at York US 30 for the Super Stock Nationals. Forty-four Pro Stock cars were there, and Don's 'Cuda was one of them. He beat Hubert Platt and then lost in round three. Early in June, he was at Bristol for the AHRA Springnationals. He beat Eddie Schartman's 10.59 in the first round, with a 10.42, but he lost in round two. He also lost in round two a week later (June 14) at the NHRA Springnationals. A first Round 10.31 beat Ronnie Mercer, but he fouled against Booth in the second round. Grotheer won at Seattle's Pro Stock Championships in July. He qualified #1 with a 10.27 and then ran 10.28 in the first round, over a fouling Jim Petrie. He had an easy second-round race and then ran another 10.28 in the semifinals to beat Dick Tutino. In the final, he ran Bob Lambeck. Don set both ends of the track record while winning with a 10.10/136.36 over Lambeck's 10.43/135. His next stop was at York for the NHRA Summernationals. Don qualified #4 with a 10.06/137.40. He ran another 10.06 at 138.46 in the first round, to beat a fouling John Petrie. In round two, his Cuda developed problems and slowed to 15.05 that lost to Herb McCandless' 10.06/138.

Notes: This original Pro Stock car was thrown together at Bill Thomas' shop in Anaheim, Ca. It was driven in 1970 by both Howard Harmon (Rockin Robin Chevy II) and Jim Baker (SS/EA). It used a Dickie Harrell 396 cubic inch ZL-1 motor with closed chamber heads and a roller cam. New car bugs kept it from qualifying at the Winternationals. however, one month later, it won a big Pro Stock event at OCIR with Howard Harmon driving. | Ran 10.43 at OCIR. - Mike Gagnon | Jim was at Irwindale on Feb. 22 for a twelve-car show. An opening round 10.79/130.05 lost to Tom Jacobson's 10.58/131.

Notes: Andy was at Edgewater on May 4 for the second NHRA Division 3 race. He qualified #2 with an 8.62 behind Bob Glidden's 8.48. These two would work their way through the field to meet in the final. Glidden had the edge and held it with an 8.50/153, beating Mannarino's runner-up effort of 8.71/152.80. He failed to qualify at the NHRA Springnationals, where he was the fourth alternate with an 8.87/154.90. But as the season progressed, the team got stronger. At the NHRA Summernationals, Andy qualified #7 with an 8.60/155.97. An 8.69/154.10 beat Don Nicholson's 8.87/152 in round one, but in round two, his 8.67/156.52 lost to Frank Iaconio's 8.56/157. He was at Maple Grove in August at the NHRA Division 1 race. There he lasted until the semifinals, where an 8.73/153.58 lost to eventual winner Iaconio's 8.57/156. He followed the NHRA tour into Canada for the Grandnationals. It was an eight-car field, and his 8.66/154.90 qualified #6. The race was then rained out after qualifying, and Mannarino packed up and left for the PHR Meet at Martin, Michigan. Andy qualified #2 there with an 8.61 and another 8.61/155.17 in the first round, beat Joe Satmary. He was caught napping on the line in the semifinals, and his 8.65 lost to Jim Kinnett's 8.74. The following week (August 17), he was at Beech Bend for the NHRA Division 3 race. A first-round 8.72/157.61 advanced over a fouling Larry Peternel, and in the semifinals, his 8.67/158.73 beat Jim Mikel's 8.93/154 in the "Hop Cap" Monza. This put him into another final with Glidden. Unfortunately for Andy, the results were the same, with Bob's 8.54/160 getting the win over the Firebird's 8.74/155.70. The car really improved at Indy for the NHRA US Nationals. Andy ran 8.53/157.34 to qualify #4. In the first round, his 8.53/157.61 beat Johnny Dowey's 8.69/153. But in round two, a sleepy 8.52/157.34 lost to Bill Jenkins' 8.65/155. The Maskin and Mannarino team continued to improve at Seattle, where Andy qualified #3 with an 8.45/157.34. An even better 8.44/157 beat Satmary's 8.55 in round one. The car stayed consistent with an 8.46/158.17 in round two that downed Gordie Rivera's 8.59/155. He came up against Glidden in the semifinals, and Glidden had been running 8.3s. Andy took a chance on the tree and fouled away an 8.440/158.45, which were Andy's best NHRA national event times. He had to do it as Bob won with an 8.32/160. He got some payback at Fremont's Winston Challenge race, where he actually beat Glidden in the final.

Notes: This Vega was conceived and built by Dave Smith of Ca. It did have a 3x2 frame as rules were changing rapidly when it was started. The front suspension was a Dave Smith created Don Edmunds torsion bar set up from a sprint car. The car really hooked up and won a lot of early races. - Jim Baker

Notes: This was one of the last pro stock cars that began life as a genuine factory-built car. Kevin Rotty started his season at Tucson for the AHRA Winternationals. He qualified #2 behind Sonny Bryant. Rotty easily won his first race over Don Campanello, but he had a tough semifinal race against Larry Lombardo driving Bill Jenkins' Monza. Rotty won the race with an 8.99/150.50 edging Larry's 9.01/146. He then faced low qualifier Bryant in the final. Kevin improved to 8.91/151.51 to get the victory over Sonny's 9.00/152. He then went to Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals where he qualified #5 with an 8.74/156. In the opening round, opponent Jean Batteux fouled and he advanced with a 9.27/129. But in round two, his troubled 9.54/123 lost to eventual winner Bob Glidden's 8.67/153. A week later, he was at the NHRA Phoenix Winter Championships. He qualified #2 behind Warren Johnson and the two would both make their way to the final where Rotty's 8.90 finished runner-up to Johnson's 8.74. He really ran well in qualifying at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals. There his 8.607/159.29 qualified #3, but his brakes failed in the first round, and he rolled through the lights and fouled. In April, he was at Baton Rouge for the NHRA Cajun Nationals. It was an eight-car field and his 8.76 (third alternate) failed to qualify. He still had Top Speed for the Pro Stock cars. He then won the NHRA Division 7 race at OCIR by beating Bryant in the final. A strong 8.68/157.06 qualified #2 at Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals, but an opening round 8.83/155.70 fell to Joe Satmary's quick-leaving 8.84/154. The following week (June 18), he was at Sacramento for the third NHRA Division Seven race. He set Low ET and Top Speed in qualifying #1 for the eight-car field with an 8.59/157.07. Randy Humphrey fouled against him in the first round, and Kevin advanced with an 8.70/153.85. In the semifinal, his 8.69/154.11 lost to Mark Yuill's 8.67/155. Early in July, he went to Bonneville Raceway for the fourth NHRA Division Seven race. In the opening round, his 9.07/148.77 beat Gordie Rivera. In the semifinal, Kevin's 9.11/148.52 defeated Lee Hunter's 9.17/146. He faced Sonny Bryant in the final and Bryant had been running about a half tenth quicker throughout the race. Rotty gambled on the tree and fouled away a 9.07/149.01 while Sonny ran 9.01/146 for the victory. Kevin ran 8.59/157.07 at NHRA Division 7 Sacramento, but lost to Mark Yuill on a holeshot in the final, 8.69 to Kevin's 8.67. The Gainesville numbers were Kevin's best national event times of the year.

Notes: Entering into the '78 season, Larry Lombardo, driving Bill Jenkins' Monza, was still the Chevy to beat in Pro Stock competition. But that changed during this season with Frank Iaconio and Lee Shepherd pushing hard to displace Jenkins' car for the #1 Chevy spot. Larry started the season at Tucson for the AHRA Winternationals. It was an eight-car field, and all qualified cars were Chevys. Larry ran 8.93/152 to qualify #4, and he lasted until the semifinals before his 9.01/146.37 lost to eventual winner Kevin Rotty's 8.99/150. The Jenkins team figured that they ran far better at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. They didn't. In fact, Jenkins waived his points at this race because of Lombardo's poor qualifying position (#12 at 8.83/154). But Lombardo made up the difference with his driving ability. In the opening round, his quick-leaving 8.80/154 beat Sonny Bryant's quicker 8.77/152. A second-round 8.76/154.63 beat Mark Yuill's 8.83/153, and in the semifinals, he stopped Gordie Rivera's 8.82/155 with an 8.77/153.84. I'm sure that Bill would have gladly kept his points by now. But he still had to face Bob Glidden's low qualifying Pinto in the final. Bob was the only car to run 8.5s at Pomona, and his slowest run in eliminations was his semifinal 8.69, so Larry knew he had to be sharp in the final. Both left together, and Glidden's 8.67/156 gave Larry's 8.78/155.70 the runner-up position. Shortly after that, he went to Phoenix for the Winter Championships, where although there were two Chevys in the final, Jenkins' car was not one of them. The next NHRA race was the NHRA Gatornationals. This is the race where Iaconio won his first NHRA event and started pushing Lombardo for the #1 Chevy Pro Stock title. Larry qualified #4 with an 8.64/155 behind Glidden, Iaconio, and Rotty (in that order). A first-round 8.72/156 beat Richie Zul's 8.82/155, and in round two, Larry's 8.68/156.79 beat Rivera at 8.86/155. But in the semifinals, the two Monzas of Iaconio and Lombardo lined up, and Frank outright beat Larry's 8.70/155 with an 8.68/155. To make matters worse, the following week (March 19), Larry made it into the final at the NHRA Division 4 Opener at LaPlace only to lose to another Chevy upstart, Lee Shepherd. The final round times were 8.61/160.71 to 8.73/149.35. Lee had topped 160 on three consecutive runs. Team Jenkins was now falling behind. They weren't yet overly concerned but perhaps became so after failing to qualify at the NHRA Cajun Nationals eight-car show. At this time, they laid off racing at any more AHRA events, using the extra time to develop more power, and it paid off. At the NHRA Division 1 Opener at Englishtown, the team won over Iaconio, who broke in the final. Even more astonishing was the Low ET time slip Larry was given: an 8.44. The speed was not given, but Zul had Top Speed at 159, and to run 8.44, it was thought the car would have had to do more than 160. Lombardo never ran anywhere near that time again at legal NHRA weight. True or a figment? The next Division 1 final at Cayuga came down to Iaconio and Lombardo again with the same results. Larry's 8.59/157.89 (Low ET and Top Speed) stopped Iaconio's 8.61/157 for the money. The next event was the NHRA Springnationals at Columbus. Larry qualified #8 with an 8.74/158.45 (Top Speed). But he was upset in the first round, when Bobby Yowell's 8.85/154 nipped his 8.86/156.79 to the finish line. The third NHRA Division 1 race saw another Iaconio-Lombardo Pro Stock final, and Lombardo now made it three straight with a final 8.61/156.25 that covered Frank's 8.68/155. The fourth NHRA Division One race was held at Maple Grove, and this time, Lombardo faced a different challenger in the final. It was Division 4 regular Lee Shepherd. Lombardo got a good light, and his 8.76/154.63 held on to win over Lee's quicker 8.72/153. Earlier, Larry had set both Low ET and Top Speed at 8.62/156.25. It didn't matter who was driving for Jenkins, but his cars always did well at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals. 1978 was no different. Although he only qualified #4 with an 8.66/155.97, Larry managed to make his way into the final. He improved to 8.65/155.70 in the first round, to beat Don Nicholson's new Fairmont at 8.75/153. A second-round 8.64/156.52 beat Andy Mannarino's AMC at 8.79/153, and he improved even more in the semifinals, where an 8.63/155.77 stopped Joe Satmary's 8.69/155. The only trouble was, Glidden also debuted a new Fairmont and was running 8.5s at will. The final was a foregone conclusion, with Bob's 8.55/154 winning easily over Lombardo's 8.71/155.17. These two would also meet in the final at the NHRA Grandnationals run in Canada. Only seven cars showed for the eight-car field, and Larry's 8.66 got him the #4 spot. He beat James Cook in the opening round with an 8.79, and a semifinal 8.66/155.44 took out Dempsey Hardy's 8.76/154. Once again, Bob made it look easy, he even pulled the 'chute way early, and his 8.55/144 beat Lombardo handily at 8.72/155.17 (Top Speed). Photo from 1977.

Notes: The "other" AMC car. The '73 season ended positively for the Dick Maskin and Dave Kanners team. Kanners had made it into the semifinals at the NHRA Supernationals with their Hornet giving AMC its best outing in the Pro Stock class. The '74 season would see the team do very well at national events. NHRA refactored the cars to 6.45 lbs, which would also help as they shed a few pounds. It started at Beeline for the AHRA Winternationals, where Dave qualified #7 with a 9.09 in the sixteen-car field. A 9.06/148.76 in round one, beat Gordie Rivera. In round two, Kanners ran his best time of the weekend, a 9.03/149.25, but it wasn't enough to beat Wayne Gapp's 8.94/152. Things didn't go as well at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, where a 9.10/149.75 qualified in the dreaded #9 spot. That set up a first-round meeting with low qualifier Bob Glidden that saw Kanners' off pace 9.24/148.27 lose to Bob's 9.04/152. It was ironic that just before the NHRA Gatornationals, both the AMC teams of Wally Booth and the Maskin and Kanners team were released from their contracts. That all changed after the Gatornats as Booth took the win, giving AMC its first NHRA Pro Stock victory. Kanners also ran well there. He qualified #7 with a 9.07/150.75. In the first round, his 9.00/151.15 beat Bert Straus' 9.11/149. Unfortunately, the two AMC's paired up in the next round, and Booth's 9.01/152 beat Kanners' 9.05/150.75. He won over an eight-car field at Englishtown's Pro Stock Bonanza race in April. All cars were run at 6.50 lbs per cubic inch, so Dave actually had to add weight. In round one, his 9.15/148.76 beat Scott Shafiroff's 9.23/147. In the semifinal, he had a great race that saw his 8.96/151.26 beat Bill Jenkins' 9.03/148. He turned into a Vega killer in the final, as he beat his third one with an 8.95/150.50 that got the victory over Paul Blevins' 8.98/152. At the NHRA Springnationals, both AMC's qualified in the top four positions, with Booth getting the pole at 9.06/150 while Kanners qualified #4 with a 9.10/150.25. Dave fell off to 9.23/148.02 in the first round, but it was still enough to get around Kelly Chadwick's 9.31/144. But another 9.23 at 147.79 in round two lost to Joe Satmary's quick-leaving 9.30/147. He was at Maple Grove for the All-American Pro-Series Opener, where he beat Mark Harrington driving the MIMI Vega in the first round, with a 9.23. In the second round, he advanced when Glidden fouled, but the AMC dropped a valve on his run, and he was unable to run in the semifinals, so Dick Landy replaced him via the "break rule."Shortly after that (June 23), he was at Thunder Valley for the NHRA Division Five opener. He qualified #1 with a 9.16/148.27 (a new track record). in the opening round, his 9.24/149.50 (speed was also a new track record) defeated Jim Cooper. In the semifinal, his 9.21/148.27 beat Bill McDaniel's Pinto. He faced Kelly Chadwick in the final. Kelly was running two tenths off the AMC's pace, and it stayed that way in the final, where Dave ran 9.19/148.76 for the victory over Chadwick's 9.42/146. The following week (June 30), he reset the NHRA 1/8 mile record to 5.82 while winning the NHRA 1/8 Mile Drags at Indiana. There he qualified #1 at 5.92. He then ran 5.82 twice and set Top Speed at 120.00 before beating Preston Honea, who fouled against him in the final. The next NHRA national event was the Summernationals held at Englishtown in July. The two AMC cars qualified side by side, with Booth getting the #6 spot and Kanners qualifying #7 with a 9.05/150. A 9.23/148.02 beat Bert Straus' 9.38/147 in round one, and a second-round 9.31 beat John Lingenfelter's 9.39. But his 9.30 in the semifinal fell to eventual winner Larry Lombardo's 9.14 in Bill Jenkins' Vega. The NHRA Grandnationals did not go well for the team. Dave's 9.09 qualified #10, which set up a first-round meeting between the two Hornets. Dave's 9.17 in their race lost to Booth's 9.06. More bad luck interfered at the PHR Championships. Kanners qualified #7 in the sixteen-car field with a 9.06, but he broke against Bill Robertson in the opening round. Ran 9.10 at Pomona, 9.00 at Gainesville, 9.10 at Columbus, 9.06 at Englishtown, and 9.01 at Ontario.

Notes: At the AHRA Winternationals, Bill ran 9.57/145.39 to qualify #11 in the sixteen-car field. A opening round 9.58/143.54 lost to eventual winner "Dyno Don" Nicholson's 9.41/143. A 9.53/144.69 qualified #8 in the 32 car field at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. In round one, a 9.74 beat Tom Jacobson's Camaro. In round two, Bill Jenkins got out of shape and slowed to a 10.12 while Bagshaw motored to a 9.69/144.69 for the win. In round three, he lost to Jack Roush's Pinto. Bill was still running his Challenger at Famoso for the Bakersfield March Meet. He lucked out in the first round, when Butch Leal's Duster broke against him. In the semifinals, he lost to Larry Huff. A week later (March 11), he was at Fremont for the AHRA Northern Nationals. A 9.37/147 qualified #3 and he lasted until round two where he fouled against Ken Van Cleave. Bagshaw was runner-up to Dick Landy at Sacramento for the California State Championships. He ran 9.48 in the semifinals to earn the right to face Landy in the final. Landy's 9.17/148 was too strong for Bill's old Challenger's 9.37/146.72.

Notes: Parris was at Miami-Hollywood for the fourth NHRA Division Two race. In the first round, his 9.36/145.39 advanced when Jack Blosser's Challenger broke. He had a good race in round two that saw his 9.46 beat Max Hurley's 9.59. Carmen Rotonda fouled away a 9.39 against him in the semifinal, and Parris ran 9.41. In the final, he faced low qualifier, Reid Whisnant. Reid had been running 9.2's with ease and hit a meet's best of 9.19. So William took a gamble on the tree in the final and came up red. Still, he ran a respectable 9.29/146.34 in a runner-up effort to Whisnant's 9.26/147. William was the third alternate at Gainesville at 9.394/144.00. He qualified #21 at NHRA ENglishtowntown at 9.376/145.90. He ran his best NHRA national event times in a first-round loss to Melvin Yow, 9.22/151 to 9.350/146.57. Willam was the sixth alternate at Indy at 9.456/144.92. He qualified #8 in the Eastern Conference (#9 overall) at the Amarillo World FInals (no qualifying time). He lost in round one, to Lynn Harrison, 9.67/139 to 9.78/140.62. That was William's last NHRA national event of the year.

Notes: Ken ran an 8.98 to qualify #5 at Beeline for the AHRA Winternationals. In the first round, a 9.08/152.02 beat Tim McNally's 10.25/128. A second round 9.10/152.54 lost to eventual winner Bob Glidden's 8.91/152. Ken then went to Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals where he again ran an 8.98 (152.02) in qualifying. That number was good for the #4 spot in the field. He slowed to a 9.31/148.02 in the first round, that lost to Scott Shafiroff's 9.18/150.

Notes: Rich qualiified #10 at the NHRA Summernationals at 9.723/139.53. He beat Joe Satmary in round one, 9.79/139.10 to 9.91/138. Ronnie Sox beat him in round two, however, 9.58/144 to 9.94/133. Rich qualified #2 at Sanair for the NHRA Grandnationals with a 9.630/140.00. He was still over two-tenths behind low qualifier Bill Jenkins at 9.41. But Rich fouled in the opening round, tossing away a 9.68/139.96 against Carmen Rotonda, who advanced with a 9.81/138. Shortly after that, he was at Maple Grove for an eight-car show. He qualified #1 with a 9.77 and then ran 9.68 (Low ET) at 139.75 to beat Al Joniec's 9.87/139 in the opening round. A semifinal 9.69/139.75 beat Richie Zul's 9.87/138 and moved him into the final against Ken Montgomery. The two had a good race, but the Vega was too strong, and Mirarcki won with a 9.69/140.18 over Ken's 9.78/140. Another victory came at the fourth NHRA Division 1 race held at Cayuga. There Rich's 9.67/141.06 in the final stopped Ray Allen's 9.73/139. Rich had a great US Nationals at Indy. He qualified #8 at 9.741/139.53. In round one, he beat Don Lorentzen, 9.80/139.75 to 10.16/134. He then took out Bobby Yowell, 9.74/139.53 to 9.82/141. In round three, he took the measure of Carmen Rotonda, 9.78/139.10 to an 11-second shut-off. And in the semis, he took an amazing win over Don Nicholson, 9.78/139.53 to 9.70/140. We need confirmation of whether this was a massive holeshot or if Don fouled. In the final, Rich finished runner-up to Ray Allen, 9.48/141 to 9.80/139.31. Rich was #6 of the Eastern Qualifiers at the Amarillo World Finals in October, hitting a 10.21 in the high altitude. He beat Shay Nichols in round one, 10.08/138.67 to 11.35/91. In round two, he lost a close one to Jim Hayter, 9.92/137 to 9.99/139.10. At Ontario, for the NHRA Supernationals, he was the second alternate with a 9.72. Rich also ran 9.69 at York this year.

Notes: Former Billy Stepp car. | Carmen Rotonda qualified on the "bump" for the sixteen-car field at Beeline for the AHRA Winternationals with a 10.02. Unfortunately, he lost to Bill Bagshaw in the first round. He then went to Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals where on his info sheet, it was claimed that he was driving a Duster. He qualified #22 with 10.010 in the 32 car field and lost early in eliminations.
