Notes: Rivera qualified #6 at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals with an 8.77/155. He improved to 8.73/155 in a first-round victory over John Hagen's 8.86/154, and in round two, his 8.79/154 advanced over a crossed-up Wally Booth. His run ended in the semifinals, where his 8.82/155.44 lost to Larry Lombardo's 8.77/153. He qualified #8 at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals with an 8.687/157.34. He beat Virgil Brunner in the first round, with an 8.83/155. In the second round, his 8.86/155 lost to Lombardo's 8.68/156. He then went to Fremont for the NHRA Division Seven race. His 8.61/156.79 qualified #2 in the eight-car field but in the opening round of eliminations, his 8.64/157.61 lost to Mark Yuill's 8.64/157 in a very tight race. NHRA held its Cajun Nationals at State Capitol Raceway near Baton Rouge at the end of April, and it was a tough eight-car show. Rivera was the first alternate with an 8.73/155.70 best. But he had out-qualified Lombardo and Kevin Rotty, among others. He was at OCIR for the next NHRA Division Seven race in May. He qualified #7 at 8.80, and his 8.85/142.63 lost to Randy Humphrey's 8.73/154 in the opening round. Also, 8.66 at Sacramento CA 6/18/78. |

Notes: Qualified #21 at 9.989/138.46 at NHRA Pomona Winters. Lost to Don Nicholson in round one, 9.85/140 to 10.00/137.40. First alternate at the Gatornationals (times not reported). Fifth alternate at Columbus (times not reported). Poole was at Milan Dragway on June 25 for the NHRA Division Three race. Rain postponed the finals one week, and when they ran the Pro Stock final, it came down to Gordon Collett and Poole. The two had a good race that saw Barrie get the victory with a 10.03/135.95 over Gordon's 10.09/139. Ran 9.840/138.88 (#8 qualifier) and went two rounds at the Grandnationals. Ran 9.65 at Bowling Green, winning the WCS meet on 8/72. Qualified #24 at 9.891/138.67 at Indy but did not run the first-round. Qualified #3 at the Amarillo World Finals at 10.01 and went two rounds. Had Doug Nash Trans. Ran a 429 wedge, later tried a Boss 429. Debuted a Pinto at Ontario and went to the semis. AKA Border Bandit. |

Notes: Don qualified well at Pomona for the Winternationals with the 8.852/153.32 (using a unique Doug Nash clutchless 5-speed transmission). In round one, he beat Kevin Rotty, 9.26/146.81 to 9.31/146. In round two, Dave Kanners fouled away an 8.87/153, and Don progressed with a 9.03/153.58. In the semifinals, Wayne Gapp's 8.87/153 beat his off pace 9.30/135.74. At the Gatornationals, an 8.843/153.32 qualified #9, setting up a first-round meeting with low qualifier Larry Lombardo in Bill Jenkins' Monza. Larry won that first-round battle, 8.77/155 to a 12-second shutoff. Nicholson went to Atlanta on May 23 for the IHRA Dixie Nationals, where he lasted until the semifinal before his 8.91 lost to Roy Hill's 8.88. Don failed to qualify at the NHRA Springnationals as the Fords were at a severe weight disadvantage in NHRA racing, and his 9.267/148.02 was the third alternate. Don was spending a lot more time match racing to make ends meet. At the NHRA Summernationals at Englishtown, Don chose to run the car as a C/Altered in the competition class rather than run it in Pro Stock. He did not enter another NHRA national event in 1976. Don was back at Gainesville for the Turkey Trot Nationals near the end of the year. He qualified #1 for the eight-car show with an 8.76 (Low ET) at 152.80. In the opening round, his 8.92/150.50 beat Tony Wood's 9.18/151 in the former Reid Whisnant Duster and another 8.76 at 153.58 (Top Speed) beat Pat Ulik's Hornet at 9.18/146. But Unfortunately, Don had a little nap in the final, and his 9.04/150.00 lost to Lamar Walden's 9.12/148. |

Notes: Joe qualified #13 at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals with an 8.729/154.10. An opening round 8.780/155.44 lost to "Dyno Don" Nicholson's 8.69/157. At Baton Rouge for the NHRA Cajun Nationals, Joe ran 8.710/158.52 to qualify #6 for the eight-car field. Unfortunately, he fouled away an 8.84/155.70 in a first-round loss to Lee Shepherd, who ran 9.04/152 to advance. On May 21, he was at Edgewater for the NHRA Division Three race. His 8.74 qualified #2 behind Wally Booth's 8.67, and these two would work their way into the final. Joe ran another 8.74/155.17 in the first round to stop Virgil Brunner's 9.16/151. A semifinal 8.75/155.44 took out Dave Avery's 8.89/151. Booth had the performance advantage by about a tenth as he ran 8.65 in his semifinal race, but the AMC broke in the final, and Joe ran 8.83/155.70 for the victory. The next Division Two race was held at Indianapolis on June 4. Once again, Joe qualified #2 (8.67/157.34), but this time he followed Glidden (8.65/158). An opening round 8.78 beat Brunner's 9.38, but he fouled away an 8.81/154.37 against Andy Mannarino in the semifinals. Satmary qualified #10 at the NHRA Springnationals with an 8.760/155.17. An 8.84/154.90 beat Kevin Rotty's slightly quicker 8.83/155 in the first round, and in round two, Don Campanello's 8.95/152 fell to Joe's 8.87/154.37. His run ended in the semifinals, where Bob Glidden's 8.72/151 put his 8.89/154.63 on the trailer. Joe qualified #6 at the Englishtown Summernationals at 8.722 (speed not reported). He beat Don Campanello in round one, 8.66/156.24 to 8.81/152. NI round two, Joe took out Frank Iaconio, 8.65/157.06 to 8.71/156. Larry Lombardo ended his day in the semis, 8.63/155 to 8.69/155.44. Joe qualified #2 at the Grandnationals at 8.630/155.97 (Top Speed of the Meet). He lost to a Dempsey Hardy holeshot in round one, 8.77/153 to 8.75/154.63. Joe had a fantastic U.S. Nationals at Indy. He qualified #4 at 8.680/155.70. In round one, he took out Brad Yuill, 8.735/153.58 to 8.80/155. Randy Humphrey had problems against him in round two, and Joe won, 8.734/154.63 to 9.54/105. Satmary then grabbed a huge holeshot win over Lee Shepherd in the semis with his 8.745/154.90 taking out the Reher & Morrison team's 8.728/153.32. Joe was up against world-beater Bob Glidden in the final, and his 8.772/155.17 couldn't catch Bob's 8.61 at only 146. Joe's next race was the World Finals at Ontario. He qualified #6 at 8.720/155.70. He got a bit of revenge on Dempsey Hardy in round one, 8.823/153.58 to 8.99/151. Larry Lombardo put a close to his season in round two, however, 8.71/155 to 8.880/153.32. It was a good year for the racer from Hammond, Indiana. Did Joe run 8.62 in Divisional action? |

Notes: Joe was at Beeline in Jan for the AHRA Winternationals. He qualified #9 with a 9.19. That set up a first-round meeting with low qualifier Bob Glidden. It wasn't much of a race as Bob's 8.88/153 beat Joe's 9.26/147.54. He then went to Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, where his 9.24/149.00 qualified #15. In the first round, he fouled against Melvin Yow. Ran 9.24 at Pomona, 9.20 at Columbus, 9.18 at Englishtown, 9.13 at Indy, 9.057/151.79 at Ontario. |

Notes: Ran 9.130 at York Super Stock Nationals 74, 9.03 at Pomona, 9.06 at Englishtown, 9.31 at Indy, 9.12 at Ontario. | Paul had one of the three Vegas that qualified at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. His 9.13/150.50 qualified #11, but an off-pace 9.33/148.51 in the first round, lost to Bill Jenkins' 9.05/151. At the NHRA Gatornationals, he qualified #10, but his 9.01/151.51 lost to Jack Roush's 8.94/153 in round one. He qualified #11 with a 9.23 at the NHRA Springnationals, but he could not run eliminations, and alternate Jim Halloran took his place. Paul ran 9.06/149.50 to qualify #8 at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals, but he slept in the first round, and his 9.23/147.78 lost to Kelly Chadwick's 9.29/146. He got his first-round win at the NHRA Grandnationals in Canada. There he qualified #7 with a 9.06, and his first-round 9.15/148.25 beat Lee Edwards. A very satisfying, holeshot 9.05 victory over Larry Lombardo's 9.05 in Jenkins' Vega came in the second round, but he fouled away a 9.07 in the semifinals against eventual winner Wayne Gapp's 8.84. Things did not go too well at Indy for the NHRA US Nationals. It was a 32 car field, and Paul only qualified #23 with a 9.30/147.78. That set up a first-round meeting with Jenkins, who qualified #7 with a 9.10. With a two-tens disadvantage, Blevins pushed the 'tree too hard and fouled against "Grumpy," who would have been hard to catch anyway as he ran 9.02. |

Notes: After a great '76 season that saw Warren Johnson finish second in the NHRA Pro Stock Championship,'77 was a letdown for him as NHRA changed the weight breaks and was combination wasn't as competitive. '78 was an all-new ball game for WJ. Johnson started the season at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. He qualified #2 with an 8.62/158.45 (Top Speed) behind Bob Glidden's 8.59/156. Unfortunately, his first-round 8.65/157 lost to Wally Booth's quick-leaving 8.68/154. He won the Phoenix Winter Championships a week later with a final round 8.74/156.24 that stopped Kevin Rotty's 8.90/154. He qualified #1 at 8.70/157.06. At the NHRA Gatornationals, an 8.68/156 qualified #7. In the opening round of eliminations, his 8.70/156 beat Don Campanello's 8.84/154. A second-round 8.71/156 beat Lee Shepherd's off-pace 9.31/116, but he fell to Bob Glidden in the semifinals. In April, WJ won the NHRA Division Five opener held at Pueblo Motorsports Park. In the final, he cut a great light, and his 9.19/147.23 hung on to win over Shepherd's better 9.13/147. At the end of April, he was at Baton Rouge for the NHRA Cajun Nationals. It was just an eight-car field, and he qualified #5 with an 8.66/159.29. That set up a first-round meeting with low qualifier Glidden. In their race, WJ slowed to 8.98/155.97, which lost to Bob's 8.69/154. The following week, he made the trip to Tulsa for the AHRA Springnationals. It was another eight-car show, and his 8.81/152.44 qualified second behind Shepherd's 8.80/152. An 8.85/155.44 in the opening round beat Phil Nichols, and in the semifinal, another 8.80 at 154.90 took out Jerry Janke. He faced the similar Camaro of Sonny Bryant in the final. WJ's car slowed to an 8.99/155.97 that finished runner-up to Bryant's 8.88/156. An 8.63 at NHRA Columbus set Low ET. Also, WJ ran 8.66 at Indy 1978. Photo from 1977. |

Notes: Ran 8.76/155.70 at Indy in a runner-up effort. Zul was at Englishtown on May 9 for the NHRA Division One opener. He qualified #2 with an 8.83/155.70 (Top Speed) just behind Larry Lombardo's pole-winning 8.82/150. In the first round, his 8.82/155 beat Rich Simone's 9.07. A semifinal 8.86/154.37 cut Paul Blevins 8.98/151 and set up a final round between the two Low ET qualifiers. Even though Zul ran a consistent 8.83/154 in the final, it was not enough as Larry took the victory with an 8.74/155. At the end of May, he was at Great Meadows for an NHRA Pro Stock Circuit race. He qualified #1 with an 8.94/155.80 (Top Speed). Because only seven cars showed, he got the "odd-lot" solo in the first round, and set Low ET at 8.90/150.50. Don Campanello got crossed up in his Monza in the semifinal, and Zul advanced with an 8.99/141.95. He faced another big block Camaro in the final, Carl Hobson, who had run 8.98 in the semifinal. The two had a great race, but Zul's slightly quicker 8.97/144.09 lost to Hobson's 8.98/153. Richie had the second quickest Camaro to qualify at Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals. His 8.93 got him into the #5 spot. In the opening round, a 9.03/152.02 beat John Theofiles' 9.19/147. But in round two, eventual winner Wally Booth's 8.84/154 beat his 9.04/152. He was back at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals in July. His 8.77/156.79 qualified #7, and an opening-round 8.92 beat Frank Iaconio's 8.98. Zul beat the quickest Ford from qualifying (#3) Wayne Gapp in round two, but he fouled away an 8.88/152.80 against Lombardo in the semifinal. He had to take the chance as Larry ran 8.74/154. He stopped off at Maryland International for the US Pro Stock Championships, and while he beat a fouling Bill Clayton in the first round, with an 8.83/154.37, he lost soon after and failed to reach the finals. The following weekend (July 18), he was at Suffolk for the NHRA Division Two race. While he was neither the quickest nor the fastest, he managed to win the event. His final round 8.79/153.84 beat Roy Hill's 8.79/154. Early in August, he went to Canada for the NHRA Grandnationals. He was always the second-fastest Camaro qualifier at the NHRA national events; he was again as his 8.79/155.97 qualified #5 in the eight-car field. In the first round, his 8.86 lost to Booth's 8.68. Lombardo and Zul continued their battle in Division One at Maryland on August 15. The two faced off in the final, and Larry's 8.69/156 got the best of Richie's 8.92/153.84 runner-up effort. |

Notes: Runner-up at the 1980 Winternationals, setting a new record. Photo from 1980 US Nationals. Kevin finished 4th in NHRA points in 1980, his best finish. Unfortunately, Kevin did not race in 1981 and did not get to show the big number 4 on his car. | Kevin had his best year in Pro Stock in '80. He started the year at the AHRA Winternationals, where he qualified #3 and lasted until the semifinals, where he lost to eventual winner Lee Shepherd. At Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, he qualified #1 with Low ET and Top Speed 8.492/161.57 (new NHRA speed record). Kevin beat a fouling Bill Jenkins in the first round, with an 8.62/157.34, and in the second round, Randy Humphrey also fouled against him. Rotty must have had everyone scared because, in the semifinals, Frank Iaconio was the third straight driver to foul against him. He met up with Lee Shepherd in the final, and unfortunately for Kevin, his Camaro broke a frame mount, giving Shepherd a solo for the victory. He was going to race at Famoso for the Bakersfield March Meet, but it was rain-delayed, and he was unable to make the rain date. He continued to impress by qualifying #5 at the NHRA Gatornationals at 8.490/161.00. He beat Don Nicholson in the first round, before losing to Bob Glidden in round two. At the NHRA Division 4 Opener at Baton Rouge, Kevin made it all the way to the final before losing to Shepherd's 8.60/155 with an 8.63/154.73. He won the Divisional race at Beeline, stopping a fouling Gordie Rivera in the final with an 8.87. Another runner-up finish to Shepherd came at the second NHRA Division 4 race at Green Valley. An 8.58/157.61 was no match for Lee's 8.42/156 on this day. In April, he was at Fremont for the NHRA Division 6 race. Rotty qualified #5 in the eight-car field with an 8.58/157. He lost to low qualifier Brad Yuill in the first round. He was back at Baton Rouge for the NHRA Cajun Nationals on April 27. An 8.49/161.00 qualified third in the eight-car show. A first-round 8.54/158.17 beat Sonny Ray, but he came up against Shepherd in the semifinals, and his 8.57/159.57 lost to Lee's 8.54/158. It didn't seem to matter which Division he raced in; he was tough. In May, Kevin was at OCIR for the third NHRA Division 6 race. It was another eight-car field, and his 8.50/158.17 qualified #1. He went on to win by beating Larry Johnson in the first round, with an 8.55/157.06 and an 8.53/157.61 beat Ken Dondero in Dick Landy's Omni in the semifinals. Rotty took all the awards in the final when he beat Brad Yuill with Low ET and Top Speed at 8.48/158.73. He slipped a bit in qualifying for the NHRA Springnationals when his 8.73/155.44 got the #8 spot in the field. In the first two rounds, he got around Don Coonce and Jim Kinnett before losing to Shepherd's 8.58 in the semifinals with an 8.70. Did Kevin run 8.43 somewhere this year? His NHRA national event bests were the 8.490 at Gainesville and 161.57 at the Winternationals. |

Notes: Larry qualified #5 at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals with an 8.71/158.73. Richie Zul fouled against him in the first round, and his 8.85 advanced. Larry faced a low qualifier in round two, Bob Glidden and his new Arrow. Lombardo's 8.70/156.52 was no match for Glidden's 8.50 at only 144. At the NHRA Gatornationals, an 8.58/157.06 qualified #2 behind Glidden's 8.52. In the first round, Dempsey Hardy fouled against Larry's 8.64/154.37, but he lost a close one to Ronnie Sox in round two. Lombardo's 8.62/156.79 lost to Sox's 8.61/155. A runner-up finish to Frank Iaconio came at the NHRA Division 1 race at Englishtown. The "Jenkins" team did not run at the NHRA Cajun Nationals as rain postponed it. Another runner-up finish came at the NHRA Springnationals. Larry qualified #2 behind Glidden's Arrow with an 8.62 at a track record speed of 159.85. An 8.76/155.70 beat Wally Booth's 8.86/153, and in round two, his 8.72/155.44 advanced when Warren Johnson fouled. It was just like the old days in the semifinals when "Grumpy's Toy" was matched against "Dyno Don" Nicholson. This time Lombardo's 8.72/154.90 won over Nicholson's 8.89/149. This put Larry in the final against Glidden. Bob was pretty much unbeatable at this stage, and his 8.61/157 got the win over the Camaro's 8.76/151.51. Shortly after that (June 24), Lombardo picked up another runner-up finish at the NHRA Division One race at Maryland International. His final round 8.65/156.25 lost to Iaconio's 8.64/154. The Jenkins team did not race at Denver for the NHRA Mile High Nationals. Considering how well "Grumpy" always did at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals, the '79 event was a let-down for the team. Larry ran well in qualifying, hitting an 8.60, which was good enough for the third spot in the field. He defeated Roy Hill in the opening round, but the engine broke a pushrod in the second round, and he lost to Nicholson. Most of the Pro Stock teams then went to nearby Maryland International for its annual U.S. Open Pro Stock Championships. Lombardo was no exception. It was a sixteen-car show, and in round one, Larry's 8.77 beat Tom Gray. In round two, sneaky ol' "Dyno" got him again; this time, the Ford driver's 8.70 took out Lombardo's 8.80. That was followed by a big win at Martin, Michigan, for the PHR Championships. Larry qualified #3 with an 8.71/153.58. He picked it up to 8.68/154 in the semifinal to beat low qualifier Joe Satmary's 8.74/156. He faced the strong AMC of Booth in the final. The two had a good race, but the Camaro was strong, and Larry set Low ET while winning with an 8.65/154.90, topping Booth's 8.71/154. In early August, the team traveled to Canada for the NHRA Grandnationals. It was an eight-car field, and Larry qualified #4 with an 8.64/155.70. An 8.68 in the opening round beat Jim Cook but despite running a strong 8.54 in the semifinal, he lost to Iaconio's even better 8.48. More problems for the team came at Maple Grove for the fourth NHRA Division One race. Lombardo had set Low ET and Top Speed while qualifying #1. But in the first round, the car broke a lifter, and Larry lost to Larry Sengstack. The so-called "straw that broke the camel's back" came at Indy during the running of the NHRA U.S. Nationals. Larry qualified #6 for the race with an 8.67/157.61. He beat Satmary in round one, and in round two, he got a bit of "revenge" over Iaconio by beating him with an 8.67 that stopped Frank's quicker 8.66. A so-so 8.70/153.84 got the better of Mark Yuill at 8.82/157 in the semifinal. The problem was, Glidden had just won his semifinal race with an 8.58. Every run Bob had made in eliminations was between 8.56 and 8.58. That had to be weighing in heavily on Lombardo going into the final. He needed to somehow pick up over a tenth to win. So he gambled on the tree and lost. He ran 8.61/154.63 while Glidden got the victory with his slowest pass of the day, an 8.61/143. But the action didn't end there, unfortunately. Jenkins and Lombardo exchanged heated words, and as a result, Larry was fired from driving the car. AKA the Lotus Car with ladder bar suspension. |
