Notes: Also used a 340-inch engine. | Don's season started at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. Things didn't go so well. He made two sub-par passes with a best of 9.16. He and crew chief Jon Kaase changed engines and hoped for better results. Unfortunately, after waiting in line for six hours for one last qualifying attempt, the two of them watched as qualifying ended just two cars in front of them. It was a tough break. At the NHRA Gatornationals, Don qualified #5 with an 8.65/156.79. But in the process, he hurt his good engine. After changing engines, he ran 8.69/157 to beat Joe Satmary's 8.78/155 in round one, before losing to Bob Glidden's 8.59/151 in round two with an 8.73/154. At the NHRA Cajun Nationals, his 8.65 qualified #4 in the eight-car field. But in the opening round of eliminations, his off-pace 8.89/152.80 lost to Sonny Bryant's 8.74/155. On May 7th, he was at Englishtown for the NHRA Division One opener."Dyno's" 8.61 qualified #2 behind Richie Zul's 8.58. He really stepped it up in the first round, where his 8.52/157.61 beat Bernie Agaman's 8.73/157. But in the semifinal, his 8.60/157.34 lost to Frank Iaconio's 8.57/153.

Notes: Qualified third at AHRA Fremont at 9.054/151.77 on 3/30/74. 8.99 at St. Louis 74. | Larry had one of the strongest Mopars in '74, even when running in NHRA competition with their 7.00 lbs per cubic inch weight break for Hemi powered cars. At the AHRA Winternationals, Larry qualified #10 with a 9.24. A first-round 9.25/149.75 lost to Bill Jenkins' 8.92/153. He then went to Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals where he was one of three Mopars to qualify. His 9.22/149.25 put him in the #13 spot for the show. Once again he lost in the first round, this time Wally Booth's 9.09/150 stopped his 9.34/148.02. As mentioned above, he qualified #3 at the AHRA Northern Nationals where he lasted until the semifinals where his 9.07 lost to Bill Bagshaw's 8.93. On April 6 he was at OCIR for the AHRA Grand American race. Huff set Low ET at 8.96 in qualifying #1 and lasted until the final where he fouled away a 9.11/151.77 while Bagshaw motored to the victory with a 9.04/152. His next good showing came at Green Valley on May 8 where he qualified #1 with an 8.91 (Low ET). Unfortunately, he failed to reach the finals. He won the next AHRA Grand American race at Dragway 42. Jenkins fouled against him in the final and Larry took the win with a 9.10/153.58. Another win came at Spokane where he won the AHRA Springnationals by stopping Pete Kost in the final with a 9.19/149.50. The next AHRA Grand American race was the Drag Nationals at Kansas City on July 7. Huff's 9.14/148.51 qualified #2 behind Jenkins' 9.04/150. These two would work their way to the finals. Larry beat Jerry Haas in the first round, with a 9.15 while in the semifinals a 9.18/148.76 advanced when Ronnie Sox fouled. Jenkins ran 9.05 twice to reach the finals against him. In the final, the Vega fell off to 9.09/149, but it was still more than enough to beat Huff's 9.26/148.76. He got back into the winner's circle at St. Louis for the AHRA Gateway Nationals. There he set Low ET at 8.98 and in the final his 8.99/152.07 beat Warren Johnson's 9.10/152. The tables were reversed on August 25 at Tulsa for the AHRA American Challenge race. This time Johnson beat a fouling Huff in the final. Times were close with Warren's 9.22/150 getting the win over Larry's 9.21/149.

Notes: 1978 photo. | This was the calm before the storm. The Reher-Morrison team ran well in '79, but nothing forecast just how well they would do in '80. Driver Lee Shepherd started the season by qualifying #2 at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals with an 8.61/157.34. An opening round 8.65/155.97 advanced over a fouling Gordie Rivera, but in round two the Camaro broke and slowed to 9.03 in a loss to Joe Satmary. At the NHRA Gatornationals, Lee's 8.62/156.25 qualified #4. But the team was unable to show for the first-round race against Don Campanello. Shepherd won the NHRA Division 4 race at LaPlace, stopping Shelby Jester in the final. At the rain-delayed NHRA Cajun Nationals, Lee qualified #3 in the eight-car field, and he got a solo run in the first round. In the semifinals, he beat Wally Booth's 8.81 AMC effort with an 8.72/154. This put Shepherd into the finals against Bob Glidden (a forecast of the next two seasons). Shepherd tried hard with an 8.71/155.44, but few could keep up with Glidden in '79 and Bob's 8.56 at a shutting off,149 got the victory. The team then stopped off at St. Louis on June 3 for the AHRA Gateway Nationals. Lee reset both ends of the AHRA record during qualifying with an 8.59/159.30. He then ran 8.65 and 8.73 to reach the final. His final round opponent was Bobby Marriott and Lee's 8.69 defeated Marriott's 8.86 for the victory. A week later (June 10), they were at Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals. An 8.71/154.63 qualified #5. In round one Shepherd's 8.85/152.02 beat Campanello's 8.87/153, but in round two an 8.82/153.06 was no match for eventual winner Glidden's 8.66/152. Alamo Dragway was the next stop for the AHRA Nationals. The team dominated. Lee qualified #1 with an 8.65/156.80, and he set Low ET and Top Speed to the final with an 8.61/159.56 that beat Marriott's 8.71. They did not go to Denver for the NHRA Mile High Nationals. Shepherd was disappointed when the Camaro broke in the final against Mike Oppen at the Amarillo Division 4 race.

Notes: Low qualifier at AHRA Fremont on 3/30/74 at 8.922/153.84. Also ran 8.93 at Fremont, then won the event over Sonny Bryant. | Bill ran 8.94 to qualify #4 at the AHRA Winternationals. Unfortunately, he was a little tired and his first-round 9.25/149.75 lost to Sam Scott's 9.45/144. At Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, a 9.034/150.75 qualified #6. In the first round, he beat Bob Coleman's 9.17/150 with a 9.12/149.25. In round two, a 9.22/144.92 lost to Wayne Gapp's 8.99/151. Bill did not run any other NHRA national events after the Winternationals. He was at Famoso for the Bakersfield March Meet where he cleaned house. He qualified #1 with a 9.10; the next closest qualifier was at 9.30. Bagshaw went on to win the event setting Low ET and Top Speed at 9.08/149.50 along the way. As mentioned above, he won the AHRA Northern Nationals at Fremont on March 17 with all the honors: Low ET, Top Speed and number one qualifier. He took his third big win of the young '74 season on April 6 at the AHRA Grand American at OCIR. Bill qualified #2 with a 9.00 and in the final, he beat low qualifier Larry Huff with a 9.04/152.54 (Top Speed). Bill went on to win the next AHRA Grand American as well. It was held at Green Valley in May. A 9.02 qualified #2 and he went on to beat Warren Johnson's 9.21 in the final with a 9.11. At NHRA's second Division 7 race held at Sacramento in June, Bill qualified #3. He won the event with a 9.21/145.17 in the final over Sonny Bryant's late 9.10/150. He won the next Division 7 race as well. It was held at Irwindale and there, his final round 9.11/149 stopped the Pinto of Lee Hunter. Bill had an unfortunate accident at St. Louis in July. He was there running at the AHRA Gateway Nationals when his car got out of control and crashed into the stands. Two people died and another 19 were injured in the crash.

Notes: The best NHRA times were a great 8.670/157.61 #2 qualifier at Seattle. | Kanners started his season at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. He qualified #4 with an 8.81 as he had the only AMC in the field as Wally Booth had switched to a Vega for this race. He upheld the AMC honor by running 8.88/153.06 in the opening round to beat Dick Landy's 8.99/153. But in round two, he fouled away an 8.87/153.06 against Don Nicholson, who advanced with a 9.03/153. By the time the NHRA Gatornationals was run, there once again were two competitive AMC Pro Stock cars as Booth returned to his Hornet. Dave easily out-qualified the other Hornet, running 8.77/154.90 for the #2 spot in the field. In round one, Charlie Reed's 8.97/150 lost to his 8.86/154.10. A second-round 8.88/153.58 caught Roy Hill snoozing and beat his 8.84/155. But in the semifinals, Warren Johnson's 8.78/156 sent Dave's 8.84/154.37 packing for home. Maskin and Kanners were just getting started with their cutting and welded cylinder head research. They were finding more power as the season progressed, and it showed.

Notes: Lee ran 8.67 under AHRA rules for their Tucson event in January. He then qualified #10 at NHRA Pomona at 8.978/152.54. In round one, Lee fouled against Warren Johnson; WJ's 8.97/155.17 won despite Lee's better 8.82/154. He qualified #7 at NHRA Gainesville at 8.829/154.63. In round one, he beat Reid Whisnant, 8.87/151.77 to 8.96/152. Bob Glidden ended Lee's day in round two, 8.87/154 to 8.96/152. Lee qualified #15 at Indy with an 8.978, but that was in his new Vega.

Notes: The best NHRA times were 9.290/147.29 in a first-round loss to Reid Whisnant's 9.21 at the 1973 Gatornationals. Ronnie was at Rockingham early in May for the IHRA Pro-Am Championships. His 9.23 qualified #7 in the sixteen-car field, and in the opening round, he got a solo run when Harold Clark blew an engine on his burnout. Lyles ran 9.44/145.86 to advance. A second-round 9.28/146.57 beat Roy Hill's 9.37/141, but in the semifinal, he fouled on a 9.22 run against eventual winner Don Carlton, who ran 8.99. Shortly after that, Lyles was at Maple Grove for its annual Dutch Classic race. He qualified #4 in the eight-car field with a 9.40, and in round one, his 9.25/146.34 (Low ET and Top Speed) beat Bruce Larson. In the semifinal, his opponent, Bill Lawton, fouled. But shortly after leaving the line, a rod let go in the Duster, and he could not run in the final. He was back at Maple Grove for the USRT event. It was a sixteen-car field, and in the opening round, his 9.41/144.69 fell to Herb McCandless' 9.39/146. He then went to Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals but failed to qualify. Things went much better at Blaney for the third NHRA Division Two race. He first ran 9.45/145.16 to beat Jim Rodriquez. A second-round 9.47/144 took out William Paris, and a 9.41/144.23 stopped Oscar Roberts in the semifinal. He lined up against Melvin Yow in the final. Yow's transmission let go, so Lyles' 9.41/144.92 scored the victory.

Notes: On May 6, Zul was at Englishtown for the NHRA Division One opener. He qualified #3 in the eight-car field with a 9.26/147.23. In the opening round of eliminations, his 9.33/146.57 defeated Jeg Coughlin's 9.49/141. In the semifinal, his 9.36/146.10 fell to Levi Holmes' identical 9.36/146. Shortly after that (May 13), he was at Maple Grove for the Dutch Classic. It was another eight-car field, and his 9.39 qualified #2 behind Carmen Rotonda's 9.36. But he failed to show for his first-round race against Bill Lawton. He was unable to qualify at Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals. Richie qualified #18 at the Summernationals at 9.359/144.43, and then the car was stolen during the race. He replaced the car with the Jenkins Camaro but did not race any other NHRA national events in 1973.

Notes: Wally started his season at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. He qualified #5 with a 9.03/149.75. A first-round 9.09/150.25 beat Larry Huff's Dodge, but in round two, his 9.11/150.25 lost to Bob Glidden's 9.01/152. In March, AMC informed both Booth and fellow Hornet campaigner Dave Kanners that they were releasing them from their contracts. So when the two teams showed up at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals, both teams had no contracts for the rest of the season. Booth qualified #3 with a 9.05/151.51. An 8.97/152.54 in the first round beat Don Nicholson's 9.03/152, while in round two, his 9.01/152.28 beat Kanners' 9.05/150. In the semifinals, Wally ran 8.95/152.80 to beat Frank Iaconio's 9.05/152. In the final, he faced Jack Roush in the "Gapp & Roush" Mustang II. The Hornet got AMC's first-ever win in Pro Stock at an NHRA national event. Booth ran 8.97/152.80 in the final over Roush's 9.01/152. AMC was so happy with the victory that they renewed their support for the two teams. The timing for the win couldn't have been any better. On March 31, NHRA held its Division 2 Opener at Warner Robins. Wally qualified #1 with a 9.02 and then made his way into the final, where he ran Fred Shafer. Booth took the win by running Low ET and Top Speed with an 8.98/154.10 over Fred's 9.37/146. He also won the Suffolk NHRA Division 2 race in May. He qualified #1 with an 8.93/152.92 and set Low ET in the first round, with an 8.92/152 to beat Lamar Walden's Vega at 9.11. In the semifinals, he beat Roy Hill with another 8.93; in the final, an 8.97 got the victory when Kenny Hahn fouled against him. At National Trail for the NHRA Springnationals, he qualified #1 with a 9.06/150.25. A 9.15/149.00 got around Richie Zul's Camaro in the first round, but his 9.16/148.76 lost to Bobby Yowell in Billy Stepp's Dodge in round two. He won his third NHRA Division 2 race in a row when he beat Reid Whisnant in the final at Blaney. Booth's 9.00 (Low ET) at 149.00 beat Reid's 9.12/148. In mid-July, he was at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals. A 9.05/150.25 qualified #6 in the field. Booth beat Joe Satmary in round one with a 9.13/149.00. In round two, his 9.14/149.75 lost to Wayne Gapp's 9.10/140 in the "Gapp & Roush" four-door Maverick. The little Hornet continued to run stronger as the season progressed, and at the NHRA Grandnationals, he qualified #2 behind Gapp's 8.86 with an 8.940/150.75. He beat the other Hornet of Kanners in the first round with a 9.06/150.50. Another 9.06 in round two topped Tony Christopher's Duster, but in the semifinals, he fell off to a 9.09/149.00 that lost to Glidden's 8.90/153. The next big race was at Indianapolis for the NHRA US Nationals. Booth qualified #6 in the 32-car field with a 9.09, and he lasted until round three, where his 8.96/150.00 lost to Glidden's holeshot aided 8.99/153. He grabbed another Division 2 title when he won the final at Gainesville. Once again, he ran Whisnant in the final, and his 9.08/149.00 beat Reid's off-pace 9.35/147. Wally ran 8.94 at NHRA Sanair 74, 8.92 at Suffolk Dragway 74, 9.03 at Pomona, 9.05 at Englishtown, 9.06 at Columbus, 8.96 at Indy, and 9.03 at Ontario.Photo from the 1974 NHRA Gatornationals, Gainesville, Florida.

Notes: The Gapp and Roush team entered the '74 season with three cars. They had the seasoned Pinto from '73 along with a new one. Along with the Pintos, they had a Mustang II. The team was not sure how the 351 ran with the new NHRA weight break of 6.75 lbs per cubic inch, but Gapp mentioned in January that if the small cars were uncompetitive, he would build a four-door Maverick to take advantage of the 6.45 factor for cars with over a 105" wheelbase. Wayne started the season at Beeline in January for the AHRA Winternationals. He qualified #3 with an 8.92. In the first round, he beat Warren Johnson's Vega with a 9.06/149.02. An 8.94/152.02 took care of Dave Kanners' 9.03 in the AMC Hornet in round two. But in the semifinals, his 9.03/151.26 lost to fellow Pinto campaigner Bob Glidden's 8.94/153. At Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, Gapp qualified #2 with an 8.95/151.77. A first-round 8.920/151.77 beat Kelly Chadwick's Vega at 9.36. In round two, he ran 8.99/151.00 to easily cover Bill Bagshaw's 9.22/144. A semifinal 9.00/150.75 beat Scott Shafiroff's 9.22/144 to put the Pinto in the final. There he had to run Bill "Grumpy" Jenkins. It was a close race with Bill's Vega barely winning with an 8.93/152, just edging the Pinto's 8.94/152.02. Gapp and Roush brought two cars to the Gatornationals, with Wayne driving the Pinto and Jack driving their new Mustang II. They qualified #1 and second with Gapp's 8.99/152.54 getting the pole. Gapp advanced past the first-round with a 9.19 when Glidden lost a transmission. But the Pinto's engine was ailing, and the car couldn't make the call for the second round. Gapp won the IHRA Southern Nationals at Charlotte in April. It was an eighth-mile track, and Wayne qualified #2 with a 5.90. He ran a 6.02/116.42 in the first round, to beat Ronnie Sox's brother, David. In the semifinals, a 6.06/117.95 beat Sam Carroll's 6.16. In the final, he faced Roy Hill's Duster. Roy ran 6.05/117 but lost to Gapp's Low ET and Top Speed of the meet run of 5.80/123.11. Wayne was at Rockingham on May 12 for another IHRA race, the Pro-Am Nationals. He qualified #5 with a 9.12/150.00, but he failed to reach the finals. Ran IHRA records of 5.80/123.11 on the eighth-mile in winning the IHRA Southern Nationals at Charlotte in late March 1974. It was the Pinto that set the record (not the Mustang II). There is footage of the race on YouTube. Wayne began running the four-door Maverick at NHRA Columbus in June.

Notes: Qualified fifth at NHRA Ontario 11/21/70 at 10.023/138.03 (the quickest Chevy behind three Chryslers and Nicholson's Ford). | Next to Bill Jenkins, this had to be the strongest Chevy Pro Stocker in '70. He started the season at Beeline for the AHRA Winternationals, he was the quickest Chevy qualifier at 10.26, but he lost to Mike Fons in round two. This was the only AHRA race he ran this season. Things went much better at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. There he qualified #3 behind Ronnie Sox and Jenkins with a 10.09/138.88. He made it into the semifinals before losing to Sox. The following week, he was at OCIR for the US Pro Stock Championships. It was a sixteen-car show. An opening round 10.02/137.61 advanced, and in the second round, he got around a fouling Sox, but it cost him a clutch. After replacing it, he faced Jenkins in the semifinal. The two had a good race, but Bill had a bit more power as his 9.95/139 beat Booth's 10.09/137.19. He seemed to be down on power at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals. His best of 10.25 only qualified #14 in the field, and in round one, he lost to Dick Humbert. At the NHRA Division 3 race at National Trail on May 3, he finished runner-up to Arlen Vanke. He fouled away a 10.20 in the final, and Vanke won with a 10.27. He got a big win the following week (May 10) at York US 30 for the Super Stock Nationals. He reached the finals by running 10.00/137.14 and 9.97 twice to meet Sox in the final. Sox had run a best of 9.86 and looked like he was on his way to another victory. In the run for the money, Wally left on Sox, and his 10.00/136.77 beat Ronnie's quicker 9.95/138. He was the quickest non-Mopar qualifier at the NHRA Springnationals at Dallas, where his 10.12 qualified #4. A 10.20 advanced past round one, while in round two, Don Grotheer fouled against him. In round three (32 car field), Dick Humbert fouled against him, and Booth moved into the semifinals. There he faced Lee Smith's 'Cuda. Lee missed a shift, and Wally's 10.28 moved into the final against Sox again. It wasn't much of a race as Wally blew the clutch while Sox ran 10.02/136 for the victory. Martin, Michigan's US 131, held a Pro Stock event in early July. The two lowest ET cars would meet in the final. In the first round, Booth faced Jenkins in an all-Camaro battle. Bill's 10.11/136 beat his 10.33/134.52. He ran 10.09/135.13 on a solo pass in round two when Larry Griffith's Dart failed to start. In his third race, his 10.19/135.33 beat a wheelstanding Vanke at 10.28/135. Unfortunately, none of his ET's were quick enough for him to make the final. He was the quickest Chevy qualifier at the NHRA Summernationals, where his 10.16/135.74 qualified #11. He lost to eventual winner Dick Landy's 10.08/136 in the first round, with a 10.18/137.61. On August 2, he was at Tri-City for the fourth NHRA Division 3 race. He made it past a fouling Bobby Yowell in the semifinals to run Vanke in the final. It was a close race, but Arlen's 10.08 beat Booth's 10.09/135.54 for the victory. At Indy for the NHRA US Nationals, Booth qualified #16 in the 32-car field with a 10.13/135.74. He improved to 10.11 in the first round, over Joe Thompson's Dart, but a second Round 10.16 lost to eventual winner Herb McCandless' 10.09. The NHRA Division 3 final was held at Bluegrass Dragway on September 20. Wally faced Vanke in the first round, and fouled.

Notes: Bill debuted the new Camaro at Englishtown, qualifying #10 at 9.838/138.46. He beat Rich LaMont in round one, 9.86 to 11.96, but lost to Don Nicholson in round two, 9.64 to another 9.86. At Indy, Bill qualified #10 at 9.777/140.84, but he was shocked by Hubert Platt in round one, 9.85 to 9.96. Bill also ran 9.80 at York with this car. That was his last national event in his own car, but he qualified Bill Coe's Duster at Ontario (and then Coe drove during eliminations).

Notes: Bob started his '73 season at OCIR on January 21 for the second All-Pro race. It was an eight-car field, and his 9.60 qualified #4. He improved to 9.51/145.16 in the opening round to beat Larry Johnson, but a even better 9.48/145.86 lost to Larry Huff's 9.49/145 in the semifinal. The following week, he was at Beeline Dragway for the AHRA Winternationals. He qualified #6 with a 9.38/147.54. A 9.53/144.69 won in the opening round of eliminations. In the second round, his 9.58/143.51 lost to Wayne Gapp's 9.28/143. At Pomona's 32 car show for the NHRA Winternationals, Lambeck's 9.538/147.29 qualified #9. He won his first-round race with a 9.602/145.16 over Mike Johnson's 10.62/135 and ran 9.684/144.69 when Melvin Yow failed to show in time. But in round three, his ailing 10.946/91.74 lost to Don Carlton's 9.50/145. That was Bob's last NHRA national event of the year. Shortly after that, he was at Holtville Raceway for its Pro Stock Championships. A 9.65 qualified #2 in the eight-car show behind Ken Van Cleave's 9.52. His 9.60 advanced in round one, but he fouled against Dale Falk in the semifinal. Lambeck ran well at the Bakersfield March Meet, where he reached the final. He qualified #4 in the eight-car field with a 9.66. An opening round 9.50/146.10 defeated Mike Johnson, and he got a lucky break in the semifinal when Butch Leal's Duster broke a U-joint. He faced Huff in the final, and Larry's 9.47 scored the victory over his 9.60 runner-up effort. The following weekend, he was at Fremont for the AHRA Northern Nationals. This was a sixteen-car show, and he ran well, lasting until the second round before losing to the race's eventual winner Dick Landy. On March 24, he was back at OCIR for the final All-Pro race. This was another sixteen-car show, and his 9.25 qualified #1. In the first round, he ran a career-best 9.23 at 145.86. But then, after clearing the traps, his engine blew, and oil got under the tires. He ended up crashing and totaling the car. He received a broken left leg and lacerations.

Notes: Pontiac had a strong performance image in the sixties. I’m sure a lot of Pontiac lovers missed having a car to root for in the Pro Stock wars of the early seventies. Sure, there were Pontiac Pro Stockers before this one. But none made the impact that this one did. Early in '73, Bert actually had to send NHRA brochures for the Pontiac Astre to prove to them such a car existed. The car was marketed in Canada. Once NHRA gave Straus the OK, construction started. The car was completed in time for the NHRA Summernationals, but new car bugs kept the car from making the show. At the NHRA Grandnationals, Bert qualified the car #9 in the sixteen-car field. He lost to low qualifier and eventual winner Butch Leal in the first round. His 9.37/143.54 lost to the "California Flash's" 9.17/150. At Indy for the NHRA US Nationals, a 9.269/146.10 qualified #16 for the 32 car show. An opening round 9.33 beat previous year's winner Ray Allen at 9.42. In round two he improved to 9.230/146.57 to send Arlen Vanke's 9.38 packing. But in round three, Bert’s 9.27/146.10 lost to Paul Blevins' 9.20/150.
