Notes: Dick Landy's last Omni. | Paul ran 8.52/159.29 to qualify #5 at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. A first-round 8.60/158.45 beat Gordie Rivera's 8.62/157, but in the second round, he lost to eventual winner Bob Glidden's 8.47/159 with an 8.66/159.29. At the NHRA Gatornationals, he qualified #12 with an 8.54/158.45. In the first round, he fouled away an 8.523/161.00 against Pat Musi's 8.50/159. He was the first alternate at the NHRA Springnationals with a best of 8.70/154.63. Paul got into the show when Warren Johnson's Starfire broke, but his 8.70/157.85 in the first round, lost to Bob Ingles' 8.58/155. He lost at the NHRA Eastern Regional at Indianapolis in the first round, when he fouled away an 8.708/154.63 against Musi's 8.64/159. Originally listed 161.87 speed, but removed that until we get confirmation. This was a small black wedge, not a hemi. |

Notes: Randy qualified #5 at the NHRA Winternationals with an 8.55/157.34. He lasted until the second round when he fouled against Kevin Rotty. A big win came at the Bakersfield March Meet, where he set Low ET at 8.54 at 154.63 in the final while beating Roy Hill's 8.72/156. At the NHRA Gatornationals, he qualified #4 and beat Alban Gauthier in the first round, before losing to Joe Satmary in round two. He was at Fremont for the NHRA Division 6 Opener in April, where although he failed to reach the finals, he did qualify #2 with an 8.50/157. At the second Division 6 race at Seattle, he beat Tom Chase in the first round, with an 8.67/154.10. An 8.72/154.37 beat Gary Hansen in the semifinals and moved him into the final against Larry Johnson. The two had a good race, but Humphrey's 8.71/153.58 finished runner-up to Johnson's 8.69/154. The next Division 6 race was at OCIR on May 17. Randy's 8.66/155.44 qualified #6. In the first round, he had problems and shut down to 9.96 in a loss to Brad Yuill's 8.61/157. |

Notes: Nicholson started the year the way any racer would've liked, by winning. In January, he was at Tucson for the AHRA Winternationals, where he qualified #1 for the eight-car field with an 8.87/154.37. He beat Sonny Bryant in the semifinals to face Kevin Rotty for the win. In the final, Rotty's Camaro blew a motor shortly after leaving the line, and Nicholson got the victory with another 8.87 at 150.25. "Dyno Don" qualified #3 at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals with an 8.654/157.34. Gordie Rivera fouled against him in the first round, and Nicholson advanced with an 8.68. A second-round 8.72/155.70 beat Sonny Bryant's 8.82/148. In the semifinals, he lost to eventual winner Bob Glidden. His 8.83/156.25 lost to Bob's 8.55 at just 140. He then went to Beeline and won the NHRA Division 7 Opener by stopping Gary Hansen in the final. At Gainesville, for the NHRA Gatornationals, he qualified in the dreaded #9 spot with an 8.68/156.79. That set up a first-round meeting with low qualifier Glidden. Once again, Glidden came out on top in their meeting with an 8.58/151, beating Don's 8.74/149.50. He then won the NHRA Division 2 Opener at DeSoto. He set Low ET in the final with an 8.63/151.77 that beat Jim Kinnett's 8.83/153 runner-up effort. He did not compete at the NHRA Cajun Nationals and showed up at NHRA Columbus with a new Mustang. |

Notes: Cook was at Richmond Dragway in May for an eight-car show. Twelve cars attempted to qualify, and Jim made the field, but his 8.74 lost to the eventual winner Larry Lombardo, who ran 8.68 to advance in the opening round. In July, the team was at Atco for its US Pro Stock Championships. In the opening round, Carlton Phillips 8.61/156 defeated Jim's 8.89/154.10. Joe was at the NHRA Grandnationals, where his 8.79/151.51 was the first alternate, but he made the field. In round one, he lost to Joe Satmary, 8.53/158 to 8.844/154.10. That was Jim's only NHRA national event. We are pretty dubious about the 159 mph speed. Used an actual four-speed transmission. AKA Haul Ass. |

Notes: On May 6, Zul was at Englishtown for the NHRA Division One opener. He qualified #3 in the eight-car field with a 9.26/147.23. In the opening round of eliminations, his 9.33/146.57 defeated Jeg Coughlin's 9.49/141. In the semifinal, his 9.36/146.10 fell to Levi Holmes' identical 9.36/146. Shortly after that (May 13), he was at Maple Grove for the Dutch Classic. It was another eight-car field, and his 9.39 qualified #2 behind Carmen Rotonda's 9.36. But he failed to show for his first-round race against Bill Lawton. He was unable to qualify at Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals. Richie qualified #18 at the Summernationals at 9.359/144.43, and then the car was stolen during the race. He replaced the car with the Jenkins Camaro but did not race any other NHRA national events in 1973. |

Notes: Lost the quickest side by side race in history to Bob Glidden at the NHRA Summernationals, 8.58 to 8.80. (Then, in a later round, Glidden and Richie Zul set yet another combined quickest mark, 8.53 to 8.66). | Dempsey won the NHRA Division 2 opener at DeSoto Memorial Speedway on April 16. He had set Low ET and Top Speed at 8.77/155.70 before beating Roy Hill's 8.85/153 in the final with an 8.80/154.63. A couple of weeks later, he was at Baton Rouge for the NHRA Cajun Nationals. A tough eight-car field saw such notables like Larry Lombardo and Kevin Rotty fail to qualify. Dempsey's 8.73/155.70 qualified #7. But his opening round 8.83/154.90 lost to Wally Booth's 8.78/155. At Columbus, for the NHRA Springnationals, his 8.78/154.10 qualified #11. He surprised Lee Shepherd in the first round, where his 8.86/153.06 beat Lee's quicker, but later 8.83/152. But in round two, he had the same thing happen: his quicker 8.87/153.06 lost to Don Nicholson's 8.89/153. Hardy qualified #9 at Indy for the NHRA US Nationals with an 8.74. That set up a first-round meeting with low qualifier Bob Glidden. Dempsey knew he had to take a chance on the tree. He gambled and lost, fouling away an 8.78/154.63, while Glidden advanced with an 8.64. Best NHRA national event times were 8.690 at the Grandnationals and 155.70 at the Cajun Nationals. |

Notes: Andy lent this car to Wally Booth to compete at the Winters, but he got it back after Wally's AMC deal came through. Andy raced it into early 1977 before forming the M&M Boys with Dick Maskin. In November, Mannarino qualified #4 at Suffolk for the Little Guy National Open with an 8.83/153.06. In the opening round, an 8.90/151.51 beat John Theofiles' 9.02/150. In the semi-final, his 8.89/151.77 lost to Pat Musi's 8.79/153. He did not drive at any NHRA national events this year. Andy sold this car to Fred (Shafer?) BORT = AKA Balls Out Racing Team! Notes: Don started the 1974 season with two Pintos and a new Mustang II that was still getting completed. Early season plans called for Ken Dondero to drive one of the Pintos, but Bill Jenkins hired Dondero very early in the season. Nicholson put one of his 366 cubic inch engines on the dyno, making 705 hp. At Pomona, for the NHRA Winternationals, he qualified #8 with a 9.08/150.25. He beat alternate Bobby Rowe in the "Jeg's" Pinto in round one, with a 9.26/145.16. In round two, his 9.24/146.10 lost to Scott Shafiroff's 9.13/149. Don drove a Mustang for the rest of the season. |

Notes: Hansen started the season by winning the Irwindale Grand Premiere race. It was an eight-car show, and his 9.02 qualified #5. Everyone, including Gary, probably thought he would lose to low qualifier (8.79) Roy Hill in the first round. But Hill fouled, and Hansen advanced. In the semifinals, his 9.04 beat another fouling Mopar—-the Duster of Randy Humphrey, who ran 8.97 in the loss. In the final, he faced the #6 qualifier, Mark Yuill. Gary downed him with a 9.07/147, while Yuill followed at 9.15/145. He was at Beeline Dragway for the Phoenix Winter Classic, where he qualified #9. That spot earned him the right to race low qualifier Warren Johnson in the first round. It wasn't much of a race, as Johnson's 8.89/153 easily covered Gary's 9.24/148.76. He qualified #5 for the eight-car field at the Bakersfield March Meet. But his opening round 9.05/148.76 lost to Larry Huff's 8.91/152. Shortly after that, Ontario Motor Speedway held an eight-car show. He qualified #6, and in round one, the eventual winner Dick Landy's 8.89/153 trailered the little Vega's 9.14/150. On May 8th, Gary was at OCIR for the NHRA Division Seven race. Humphrey fouled against him in the first round, and in the semifinal, he was late off the line, and his 9.00 lost to Kevin Rotty's 9.09. In mid-July, he was at Sacramento for its Fox Hunt race. It was an eight-car show, and in round one, he made an easy solo when Ken Tucker broke. He ran a great 8.90/151 in the semifinal, but it wasn't enough, as he lost to eventual winner Dick Landy's 8.87/153. Gary qualified #8 at NHRA Seattle at 8.881/151.26. He beat Mike Rendell in round one, 8.93/150.75 to 9.30/144.23. He lost to Warren Johnson in round two, 8.77/154.63 to 9.11/149.25. Gary qualified #13 at Ontario for the NHRA World Finals with an 8.977/151.26. He fouled against Richie Zul in the first round, who ran 8.914/152.28 to beat Gary's 9.051/150.75. |
