Notes: AKA Team Keystone. We need confirmation of speed. Went confirmed 9.723/139.10 at NHRA Indianapolis 9/72. Other side of car said Miller & Hiner. | Bob Hiner and Jerry Miller had been running Chevys in Super Stock and Modified production classes. They watched Bill "Grumpy" Jenkins’ new small block Vega dump the Chryslers at Pomona and decided that he had the right idea and jumped on board, building this Vega. The small block Vega only had to carry six and three-quarter lbs. per cubic inch while the Chrysler Hemi had to run seven and one-quarter lbs. per cubic inch. Hiner and Miller felt that this was the way to go. Their Vega's engine was a stock bore and stroke 327 that used Duffy's 12.75:1 pistons. They chose Crane for the roller cam. The cylinder heads were also done by Crane, and the Manley valves measured 2.02" for the intake and 1.62” for the exhaust. A pair of 660 Holley carburetors sat on an Edelbrock manifold. Hooker Headers were used for exhaust. The transmission was a Borg-Warner four-speed with a Hurst shifter. A new subframe was built by Dick Lowry to support the added weight of the V8. The car took three months to build at a cost of $17,000. Best early runs were 9.89/139.96.

Notes: Lyles won the third NHRA Division 2 race held at Blaney in June. He ran a 9.47/144 over William Paris in round one, and a semifinal 9.41/144.23 beat Oscar Roberts in the semifinal. His chances didn't look good going into the final as Melvin Yow had run a track record 9.25 in winning his semifinal race driving Billy Stepp's car. But in the final, Stepp broke a transmission and Ronald's 9.41/144.92 got the victory. He was at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals where he qualified #29 with a 9.45, but he lost to Roy Hill in the opening round.

Notes: The car was originally the "Jim’s Speed Shop" car from Alabama. Vanke ran the car in M/P and AHRA Pro Stock. Suloff, Kyle, and Wagner purchased the car in '72 and ran at Thompson's local Pro Stock events, NHRA Division 3 events, AHRA Comp eliminator, and UDRA Pro Stock. Sold in '75 and was called the "Hemi X." Anyone knowing its whereabouts today, I'd be interested in purchasing the car. Last seen in NE Ohio in the mid 80s at Norwalk. – Paul Suloff

Notes: In March, Roy was at the NHRA Gatornationals, where he qualified #14 with a 9.703/139.96. An opening round 9.83/139.96 lost to Stuart McDade's 9.68/141. He had a bit of luck on his side at Rockingham for the IHRA Pro-Am Championships. In the first two rounds of competition, both Lynwood Craft and Bruce Walker in Barry Setzer's Camaro fouled against him. Unfortunately, he missed a shift in the semifinals against eventual winner Ronnie Sox. Hill was at the USRT event at Capitol Raceway in May, where although he lost early, he recorded a 9.69 in qualifying. In June, he had one of the 32 Pro Stock cars that showed up to qualify for the sixteen-car field at Bristol for the IHRA Springnationals. He qualified #13, but in round one, his off-pace 10.51 lost to Mike Fons' 9.89. Roy qualified #22 at Englishtown at 9.844/138.24 but lost in round one, to Dick Landy, 9.69/142 to 9.840/138.88. At Indy, Roy qualified #20 at 9.847/137.19. He lost to Carmen Rotonda in round one, 9.84/134 to 9.889/137.19. Roy also ran 9.69 at Blaney SC.

Notes: Allen qualified #10 with an 8.56/156.79 at the season-opening NHRA Winternationals at Pomona. He fouled against Lee Shepherd in the first round. At the NHRA Gatornationals, it was almost a carbon copy of Pomona. He qualified #10 with an 8.528/158.17 and lost to Shepherd's 8.41/159 in the first round, with an 8.61/156.52. The Gainesville qualifying numbers was their best of the year. The Jenkins and Allen team failed to qualify at most of the other NHRA events they attended. Ray was the fourth alternate at the NHRA Springnationals with an 8.78/150.28 best. The NHRA Summernationals saw an 8.78/155.17 being the fifth alternate. They did qualify for the US Nationals at Indianapolis. An 8.60/155.44 qualified #13. Ray lost to John Hagen's Arrow in the first round. An 8.59/156.52 was the second alternate at the Golden Gate Nationals, and they ended the year as the first alternate at the NHRA World Finals with an 8.53/156.24. One of the reasons the team wasn't up to par with their NHRA equipment was that they were running a lot of big-inch match race stuff this year.
