Notes: Also, 9.77 at Beeline and 9.845/140.40 at Indy 1972. Finished first in Div. 5 points. | Irv's 9.77 qualified #6 at Beeline for the AHRA Winternationals. Unfortunately, he lost to Bobby Yowell in the opening round. He then went to Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, where he qualified #18 9.928/144.00 in the 32 car field, but he lost to Butch Leal in the first round. The following week (February 13), he was at OCIR for the third All-Pro race. He qualified #6 in the eight-car field, and in the first round, opponent Start McDade, driving Billy Stepp's car, broke. In the semifinals, his 9.89 lost to Dick Landy's 9.77. At Lakeland for the IHRA Winternationals, he ran 9.85 to qualify #8 in the sixteen-car field. He ran well, even beating Bruce Walker, driving Barry Setzer's big-block Camaro in round two with a 9.84. But he slowed to 9.90 in the semifinal, and that wasn't enough to get around Arlen Vanke's 9.86. Irv's next stop was at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals. His 9.700/142.18 qualified #11, but a first-round 9.91 lost to Mike Fons' 9.77. |

Notes: This Vega was conceived and built by Dave Smith of Ca. It did have a 3x2 frame as rules were changing rapidly when it was started. The front suspension was a Dave Smith created Don Edmunds torsion bar set up from a sprint car. The car really hooked up and won a lot of early races. - Jim Baker |

Notes: 1970 Indy Nationals Pro Stock winner. Driving Sox & Martin's Duster, "Mr. 4-Speed" eked out an ultra-close win over Arlen Vanke in the final, beating him by .002 seconds, 9.981 to 9.983. Herb raced "Dyno Don" Nicholson in a lot of match races in July. Unfortunately, “Dyno" got the upper hand every time they ran. On July 3, the two were at Phenix, Alabama, for a match. Don won all three races while running the first "nine" at the track. McCandless was at least a tenth behind on all three passes, running 10.18/136.36, 10.30/136.36, and 10.12/139.43. Not long after that, they were at Dothan, Alabama, for a best of five match. Nicholson won the first race with his 10.02 beating Herb's 10.12. But McCandless came back to win the next two races with a 9.97 when Don lost a transmission, and a 9.96/138.88 that beat "Dyno's" snoozing, track record 9.92. But after that, the SOHC Maverick was unbeatable, running back to back 9.96s to win the match over McCandless' 10.03 and 9.98 times. Both stopped off at York for the NHRA Summernationals, where Herb ran 10.14/136.98 to qualify #8. He improved to 10.08/137.82 in the opening round to beat Lance Hill's 10.43/135 and an even better 10.06/138.03 in round two stopped Don Grotheer. In the semifinals, he cut a good light and his 10.14/138.24 beat Dick Humbert's quicker 10.11/136. He faced Dick Landy in the final. Landy was running a little too strong this day and Herb had to settle for the runner-up spot. Then came another match race against Nicholson at Warner Robins. Once again, Herb lost to the Maverick. On August 22, both McCandless and Nicholson were at New York National Speedway for the AHRA Nationals. Both decided to leave and go to Bristol when it seemed like the race was rained out. At Bristol for the eighth AHRA Grand American ace, these two met in the final. Herb won his first-round race with an easy 10.34 and he stepped up to 10.19 in round two to beat Dave Lyall's 10.20. A semifinal 10.15/135.95 beat Ed Miller's 10.21/134. The final was a good one, but "Dyno" won by setting Low ET at 10.07 at 136 while Herb again claimed the runner-up purse with a 10.17/135.33. Then came Indy. Herb qualified #7 with a 10.03. Low qualifier was "Dyno" at 9.90. During eliminations, McCandless ran steady 10.0s. In round two, his 10.09 beat Wally Booth's 10.16 and a third Round 10.02 took out Bobby Yowell's 10.14. Another 10.02 in the semifinals stopped Melvin Yow's 10.13. He faced the Duster of Arlen Vanke in the final. Arlen was also running 10.0s during eliminations with a best of 10.04 which had topped "Dyno" in round three. Both improved in the final to 9.98 (both at 138.03), but Herb got his biggest win. At the NHRA Supernationals, Herb qualified #9 and in the first round, ran 9.99 to beat Ken Van Cleave. In round two, he lost to his boss Ronnie Sox. On the way home from the race, he had some trouble when he was involved in an accident that had both his car and transporter go up in flames. He was OK. |

Notes: Also used a 340-inch engine. | Don's season started at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. Things didn't go so well. He made two sub-par passes with a best of 9.16. He and crew chief Jon Kaase changed engines and hoped for better results. Unfortunately, after waiting in line for six hours for one last qualifying attempt, the two of them watched as qualifying ended just two cars in front of them. It was a tough break. At the NHRA Gatornationals, Don qualified #5 with an 8.65/156.79. But in the process, he hurt his good engine. After changing engines, he ran 8.69/157 to beat Joe Satmary's 8.78/155 in round one, before losing to Bob Glidden's 8.59/151 in round two with an 8.73/154. At the NHRA Cajun Nationals, his 8.65 qualified #4 in the eight-car field. But in the opening round of eliminations, his off-pace 8.89/152.80 lost to Sonny Bryant's 8.74/155. On May 7th, he was at Englishtown for the NHRA Division One opener."Dyno's" 8.61 qualified #2 behind Richie Zul's 8.58. He really stepped it up in the first round, where his 8.52/157.61 beat Bernie Agaman's 8.73/157. But in the semifinal, his 8.60/157.34 lost to Frank Iaconio's 8.57/153. |

Notes: Frank won his first national event at the 78 Gatornationals over a redlighting Bob Glidden. Photo from 1978 US Nationals. Also 8.666/155.44 at Pomona Winters 2/78 (#3 qualifier), and 8.60 at Gainesville. | Frank Iaconio started his season at Tucson for the AHRA Winternationals. It was an eight-car field, and his 8.91/151 qualified #3. He beat Tom Chelbana in round one, before losing a close race in the semifinals that saw his 8.94/151.51 fall to Sonny Bryant's 8.94/153. At Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, his 8.66/155.44 qualified #3, and an opening-round 8.68/157 beat Randy Humphrey's 8.92/153. In round two, his 8.72/154 stopped Chelbana's 9.00/146, but a semifinal 8.73/157.34 lost to eventual winner Bob Glidden's 8.69/154. Frank won his first NHRA National event at the NHRA Gatornationals. He qualified #2 with an 8.60/157.61 behind Glidden's 8.54/153. In the first round, his 8.66/155 beat Mark Yuill's 8.80/154. An 8.67/155 in round two took out AMC's lone hope in the field, Wally Booth, at 8.70/154. He ran Larry Lombardo driving Bill Jenkins similar SRD-built Monza in the semifinals, and Frank's 8.68/155 prevailed over Lombardo's 8.70/155. He was up against Glidden in the final, and Bob had been running about a tenth faster all through eliminations. Smart money was on the Pinto to win, but Bob fouled away an 8.58/159 while Frank eased it through with a 9.06/123.45 to pick up the money. Frank was runner-up to Lombardo at the NHRA Division 1 Opener at Englishtown when the Monza broke on the line in the final. He repeated that finish at the next Division 1 race held at Cayuga. His 8.61/157.61 finished second best to Larry's 8.59/157. He didn't run as well as he would have liked at Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals. His 8.75/155.17 only qualified #9, and it set up a first-round meeting with low qualifier Warren Johnson. Warren was over a tenth quicker (8.63) in qualifying, so Iaconio took a chance and fouled. He had to try as he still ran 8.87 while Johnson advanced with an 8.74. He was also runner-up to Lombardo at the Division 1 race at Maryland, where Larry's 8.61/156 topped his 8.68/155.70 in the final. An 8.64/156.52 qualified #2 at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals and an opening-round 8.68/156.52 advanced. But in round two, he slowed to 8.71/156.25 and lost to Joe Satmary's 8.65/157. Frank's next stop was back at Maryland for the US Pro Stock Open. Unfortunately, there he lost in the first round. He followed the NHRA tour to Canada for the Grandnationals, where he ran 8.66 to qualify #3 in the eight-car field. Frank got a great light in the first round, that saw his 8.77/153.58 hold off Ronnie Manchester's quicker 8.72/154, but, in the semifinals, his 8.73/154.63 lost to eventual winner Glidden's 8.55/149 in his new "boxcar" Fairmont. |

Notes: AKA Gambler. Ran 8.670 twice at the Summernationals. In round one, he upset Lee Shepherd, 8.67/157.34 to 8.76, before losing to a Wally Booth holeshot in round two, 8.73 to 8.67. Ran 157.61 at Indy, where the team went two rounds. I think Mark was back in his and Brad's car by Seattle. Won Division 7 event at Sacramento on a holeshot over Kevin Rotty, 8.69/154.11 to 8.67/155.18. |

Notes: Frank won the Connecticut 13th annual Memorial Day Championships. His final round 9.46/146.57 beat Frank Iaconio's 9.50/140. Shortly after that (June 17), he was at Englishtown for an eight-car show. His 9.46/147.05 advanced when Bob Ingles fouled in the opening round of eliminations. But it was he who fouled against Tom Smallwood in the semifinal. Frank ran 9.38/149 at Englishtown in June 1973. He ran 9.283/147.78 at Indy 1973, where he qualified 17. He lost to Bob Glidden in round one, 9.12/150 to 9.41/146.10. That was the team's only NHRA national event. He was at the last Pro Stock event in Connecticut in 1973. Frank won the first-round at 9.89/144.69 on a massive holeshot over Will Smallwood's 9.43/146 when Smallwood had trouble staging. He was running off the pace as he broke a gear in both the first and second rounds. The second round was a single after Rich Lamont broke, and then Russo came up completely ailing in the semis to allow John Rines to advance with a slowing 10.02. Where was the 9.09 run? |

Notes: Herb ran two NHRA national events this year. He qualified #23 at Englishtown at 9.394/146.58, but he lost a strange round one to Dyno Don. Nicholson broke on the line, but McCandless ran off the track and was disqualified. A 9.284/147.78 at the Indy Nationals put him 18th. He lost round one to Wayne Gapp, 9.08/149 to 9.28/147.54. Also ran 9.21/148.71 at the Tulsa PRA National Challenge. In July, Herb was at Cayuga, Ontario, for the third USRT race. It was a sixteen-car field, and in the first round, he made an easy pass to advance after "Dyno Don" Nicholson fouled away a 9.25/147. Herb had a really close race against Dick Landy in round two that saw his 9.27 nip Landy's 9.28 to the stripe. He improved to 9.21 in the semifinal to defeat Don Carlton's 9.33. His final-round opponent was Dave Stricker, who had driven his Vega to 9.22 to win his semifinal race. The final was expected to be close, and it was. But Dave caught a great light and held on to take a 9.22/145 victory over McCandless' quicker and faster,9.19/149.00. His next stop was at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals, reviewed above. On August 8, he was back at Englishtown for the USRT race. McCandless ran really well. He started the day off by running 9.19/146.10 to beat Scott Shafiroff's 9.60/145. He set Low ET in round two with a 9.12/148.27 that took out Bruce Larson's 9.46/144. He continued to mop out the Vega's in the semifinal, where his second 9.12 run beat Strickler's 9.27/144. He had a surprising finalist in the form of Wally Booth's Hornet. Wally had run as well as 9.22 in eliminations, so he had to take a gamble on the tree in the final. Unfortunately for him, it came up red, and Herb motored to 9.13/148.02 for the victory. At Tulsa, for the AHRA National Challenge, his 9.21 qualified #8 in the 32 car field. He ran 9.24/148 in the opening round to beat Lynn Harrison's 9.63/141. Les Swearingen's Vega broke in round two, so McCandless ran 9.29/148 to advance. In round three, he came up against the eventual winner Bill Jenkins. Bill booted it to a 9.14/149 to defeat McCandless' 9.31/146. |

Notes: Bob qualified #8 at Columbus with an 8.994/150.00, and in round one, his 9.13/148.27 beat fellow Division 1 racer Rich Simone's 9.19/148.51. In round two, his 9.12/147.29 lost to Bob Glidden's 8.92/152.02. At NHRA Englishtown, Bob qualified #8 again at 8.852/153.84. Unfortunately, Bob broke in round one, sending Don Campanello on to a 9.201/148.00 win. Bob qualified #6 at 8.850/153.58 at NHRA Sanair. He lost to Larry Lombardo in round one, 8.65/156.79 to 8.86/155.17. At Indy, Bob qualified #14 at 8.880/151.00. He lost to Frank Iaconio in round one, 8.804/152.02 to 8.889/151.51. Bob was at Suffolk in November for the Little Guy National Open. His car was running really well as he set Low ET and Top Speed at 8.64/154.90, and in the final, he took the victory with an 8.76/151.77 over Pat Musi. Notes: Joe ran at Beeline for the AHRA Winternationals in January In the first round, he put a holeshot on second qualifier Wayne Gapp and held on for the win. In the second round, his 9.27 lost to Wally Booth's 9.17. At the NHRA Winternationals at Pomona, he qualified #9 with a 9.03/151.26. He lost early. Joe ran well at the AHRA Grandnationals at Dragway 42, West Salem, Ohio, in May. He qualified #4 in the eight-car show and then beat Floyd Williams' Pinto in the first round, with a 9.04/152.82. In the semifinals, he needed only a 9.15 to advance when Booth fouled. In the final, he ran Ken Dondero in Bill Jenkins' Vega. An 8.94/154 by Dondero gave Satmary's 9.12/153.32 the runner-up spot. Joe barely made the field at the NHRA Springnationals with a 9.15/148.27 for the #15 spot. A first-round 9.19/147.78 lost to Booth's 9.11/149. Joe failed to qualify at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals, but he made the show at Maryland International for the US Pro Stock Open. Unfortunately, he fouled in the first round. At the PHR Championships, Satmary qualified in the dreaded #9 spot with a 9.02. That made him run low qualifier, Bob Glidden, in the first round. Bob ran 9.02 to beat Joe's 9.24. |

Notes: Rick Howard photo. Also ran 9.84 at St. Louis. | Jim qualified #13 at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals with a 10.092/138.24. He had the third quickest Chevy in the 32 car field behind Ron Hutter and Bill Jenkins. He lasted until round two before losing to Arlen Vanke. Shortly after that, he was at Beeline Dragway for the AHRA Winternationals. This was a sixteen-car field and five Camaros made the field with Jim's 10.16 being the slowest (#15). But he picked up to 10.06/136.98 in the first round, to beat Dick Oldfield who fouled away a 9.96/140 in the "Motown Missile.” Another strong run of 10.07/137.19 beat Lee Smith's quicker 10.02/138 in round two and going into the semifinals, Hayter had the only Chevy left in the field. But he slowed to 10.12/137.67 and lost to eventual winner Vanke’s 10.01/140. In Mid-March, he joined the Fred Gibb racing team. He was the strongest of the four Chevy qualifiers at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals with a 9.750/141.16. But he fell off to 10.13/137.61 in the opening round that lost to Reid Whisnant's 10.05/138. His next stop was at West Palm Beach for the AHRA Pro-Am Championships. He reached the final, but in spite of running 9.96/137.61 he was nowhere close to the winning 9.71/141 of Don Carlton who had now taken over driving the "Motown Missile.” The Chevy Pro Stock teams were having a harder and harder time trying to keep pace with the Mopar Hemis. Even the Fords stepped up their pace and the Chevy teams were starting to fall behind. It was dark days for them in NHRA competition, but AHRA decided to let the Chevys have a weight handicap. Of course, this helped immensely. At Green Valley Raceway, for the next AHRA Grand American race, all the Mopar teams boycotted this race except for Bobby Yowell. So, the field was made up of fourteen Chevys, one Ford, and Yowell's Duster. It was a Chevy lover's dream. Jim beat the Camaros of Wayne Dobbs, Bill Hielscher, and Royce Freeman to reach the final. His semifinal win came with a 10.09. His final round opponent was Joe Satmary whose semifinal win came at 10.32. So, it looked like Hayter had the win in the bag, but he fouled and gave the win to Satmary. Things were still really bad for the Chevy teams in NHRA as at Dallas, for the NHRA Springnationals, Jim only qualified #18 in the 32 car show. He lost to eventual winner Ronnie Sox in the opening round.rn |

Notes: Photo from the 1974 NHRA Gatornationals, Gainesville, Florida. This car had a very short lifespan. Don Hardy built the car which used quick-release body panels. The Gapp and Roush built engine used Brooks rods and pistons, a General Kinetics cam, and twin Holley Dominators on an Edelbrock tunnel ram manifold. The heads, of course, were also done by Gapp and Roush. The rear end was a Ford 9" with 5.67 gears. | The "Gapp and Roush" team debuted their new Mustang II at the NHRA Gatornationals in March. Jack Roush drove it while Wayne Gapp drove the team's Pinto. As shown in the picture, he had the rear window blow out at speed on its first run. They grabbed a replacement off a rent-a-car! Jack then went out and qualified the car #2 with a 9.03/152.28 behind Gapp's 8.99/152 in the Pinto. Both survived the first-round with Jack's 8.94/153.06 beating Paul Blevins' 9.01. Gapp hurt his motor in his first-round win over Bob Glidden and was unable to run in round two. Roush had to carry the "Gapp and Roush" banner himself in round two and his 8.97/152.51 won over Scott Shafiroff's 9.08/149. He beat his third straight Vega driver in the semifinals where his 8.95/152.80 put Frank Iaconio's 9.05/152 on the trailer. This put Jack into the final against Wally Booth and his AMC Hornet. Jack made his worst run of eliminations, a 9.01/152.54 that finished runner-up to Booth's 8.97/152. |
