Notes: Englishtown 77 runner-up to Larry Lombardo. | Team earned three runner-up finishes and a fourth place in points in the team's first full season. - CompetitionPlus.com. | Ran 8.84 at Gainesville, 8.74 at Columbus, 8.68 at Englishtown, 8.75 at Indy, and 8.59 (twice) at Seattle. | Frank got harder and harder to beat as the season progressed. At the NHRA Gatornationals, he lost to Wally Booth in the second round. He qualified #3 at Baton Rouge for the NHRA Cajun Nationals with an 8.67/156.25. The race was postponed due to rain, and some cars didn't return for the rain date, so Iaconio got the first-round solo and ran 8.79/153.58. In the semifinals, he lost to eventual winner Bob Glidden. He made it into the final at NHRA's next event, the Springnationals, where he qualified #6 with an 8.74. He beat Bob Gardner in round one, and in round two, his 8.76 beat Larry Lombardo's 8.81 in Bill Jenkins' Monza. In the semifinals, he beat Joe Satmary's big-block Camaro. This set up a final-round meeting with Don Nicholson. It was a good race, but "Dyno's" 8.78/153 won over Frank's 8.80/153.30. He was runner-up at the next NHRA race as well, the Summernationals at Englishtown. An 8.70/155.70 qualified #4. Don Campanello fouled against him in the first round, and Frank advanced with an 8.71/155. An 8.75 in round two beat Ronnie Manchester, while a quick-leaving 8.75/155 in the semifinals beat Nicholson's quicker 8.67. He faced Lombardo in the final, and both ran 8.68 (Iaconio at 156.52), but Larry got the win. A week later (July 16), he won the Super Stock Magazine Nationals at York US 30. It was an eight-car show and a final round 8.73/156 beat Manchester's 8.92/152. Another week later, he was runner-up to Lombardo at the NHRA Division 1 race at Maple Grove. He also ran 8.65/156 in a match race with Bobby Yowell at Suffolk in September. Frank was running legal weight and lost three straight. |

Notes: Booth qualified #4 at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals with an 8.72. In the first round, he beat Gary Hansen before losing to a Richie Zul holeshot 8.81 that beat his quicker 8.79 in round two. Wally again qualified well at the NHRA Gatornationals, where he was #2 with an 8.72 behind "Dyno Don" Nicholson's 8.65. He went on to beat Roy Hill and Frank Iaconio in the first two rounds. He blew his engine on an 8.98 winning pass over Ken Dondero's off-pace 9.11 in the "Gapp and Roush" Pinto in the semifinals. He was unable to run in the final, and Nicholson soloed for the victory. Another runner-up finish followed at the NHRA Division 3 race at Indianapolis. There he lost to Bob Glidden in the final. Wally had been in six NHRA National Event finals in '76, so it what somewhat surprising that at the NHRA Cajun Nationals, he was in the last Pro Stock final round of his career. Baton Rouge only had eight-car PRO fields, and Booth's 8.66/156.25 qualified #2 behind Glidden's 8.62. These two would work their way to the final. Wally ran 8.79/154.53 in the opening round to beat Mike North, and a semifinal 8.82/154.37 advanced when Kevin Rotty fouled. In the final, Booth ran well, but his 8.73/153.58 finished runner-up to Glidden's 8.65/156. He set Low ET in qualifying #1 at the NHRA Springnationals with an 8.64. Booth lasted until the semifinals before his 8.78 lost to Nicholson's 8.76. He did win the third NHRA Division 3 race at Martin, Michigan. He also set Low ET and Top Speed there with an 8.71/157.34. Englishtown was NHRA's next stop for the Summernationals. Wally qualified #3 with an 8.70/156.52, but a sleepy 8.62/156 in the opening round lost to Joe Satmary's 8.78/154. He followed the NHRA tour to Canada for the Grandnationals. It was an eight-car field, and Wally's 8.67 qualified #3. He beat Bob Ingles in the first round, but he lost to Glidden in the semis. Shortly after that, he was at Suffolk for the NHRA Division 2 race. An 8.67 qualified #2 just behind Nicholson's 8.66. In round one, he beat Lamar Walden in Barry Setzer's Monza with an 8.80/153.58. But in the semifinals, he was late off the line, and his 8.85/152.05 lost to Ingles' 8.91/151. His next stop was at Indianapolis for the NHRA US Nationals. Wally qualified #8 with an 8.77. A first-round 8.92/150 beat Alban Gauthier, but in round two a late leaving 8.78/151 lost to Iaconio's slower 8.89/152. Wally did not make the long tow to Seattle for the NHRA Fallnationals, but he did go to Ontario Motor Speedway for the NHRA World Finals. An 8.80 qualified #6, but once again, he lost to a holeshot. This time Ronnie Manchester's 8.93 in the first round, stopped his quicker 8.83. In the NHRA season-long points chase, Booth finished sixth. The best NHRA national event speed was 156.79 at E-Town. Ran 8.62/156 at Englishtown 77, but that run lost in Round 1 to a massive Joe Satmary holeshot and an 8.78/154. Ran 8.61/157.34 at US 131 WCS, 8.75 at Pomona, 8.72 at Gainesville, 8.64 at Columbus, 8.62 at Englishtown, 8.77 at Indy, 8.77 at Sanair. |

Notes: Hunter's amazing 160.14 at the AHRA Winters was the sport's first official 160, eclipsing Warren Johnson's 158.63 record from 1976. Lee also ran 8.76 at Bakersfield. His best NHRA national event times were not representative of his prowess: 8.870/153.06 at the Pomona Winternationals (qualified #10; fouled against Larry Lombardo in round one), and 8.970/152.80 third alternate DNQ at the World Finals. |

Notes: Ran 75/79. Finished No. 2 in 1976. Photo from the 1977 NHRA Gatornationals, Gainesville, Florida. Ran 8.83 at Pomona, 8.84 at Gainesville, 8.80 at Columbus, 8.81 at Englishtown, 8.74 at Indy, 8.640 at Seattle, 8.80 at Ontario. | Warren started his '77 season at Tucson for the AHRA Winternationals. He qualified #2 in the field with an 8.91, and he beat Jim Basko in the first round, with an 8.98/153.28. Another 8.91 took out Kevin Rotty in round two, and a semifinal 8.95/153.58 put him into the final against low qualifier Larry Lombardo in Bill Jenkins' Monza. Larry won the race with an 8.82 (Low ET of the meet) at 153 over WJ's 8.99/153.58. At Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, he qualified #6 but lost early. He also lost early at the NHRA Gatornationals, where his second round 8.93 lost to Lombardo's 8.75. He then went to Pueblo Raceway in Denver for the NHRA Division 5 race. A final round 9.20/147 stopped Lynn Harrison. This was WJ's eighth straight NHRA Division Five race victory. Early in May, he was at Baton Rouge for the NHRA Cajun Nationals. His 8.84/154.37 qualified #6 in the eight-car field. The race was postponed due to rain, and WJ was unable to return for the rain date. Shortly after that, he was at Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals. An 8.80/155.70 qualified #9. That set up a first-round meeting with the low qualifier, Wally Booth, and his AMC. The two of them had a good race, but on this day, Booth had the stronger car as his 8.75/154 beat WJ's 8.87/151.77. Early in July, he won the third NHRA Division Five race held at Thunder Valley, Marion, SD His quick-leaving 9.11 got the win over Richie Zul's 9.10. Johnson had some trouble at Englishtown during qualifying for the NHRA Summernationals. His 'chute failed to open during a pass, and he ended up with some front-end damage after he drove off the end of the track. He still managed to qualify #9 with an 8.82. But once again, that set up a first-round meeting with the low qualifier. This time, Bob Glidden qualified #1, and Glidden ran a strong 8.68 to put WJ on the trailer. That was followed by yet another NHRA Division Five race win at Brainerd. Early in August, he went to Canada for the NHRA Grandnationals. It was another eight-car show, and his 8.86/154.90 qualified #6. He had a strange first-round race against "Dyno Don" Nicholson. Don had run 8.67/155 but lost to WJ, who did not get any time or speed record on his run. In the semifinals, his 8.80/154.37 lost to Lombardo's 8.62/156. He then won the final NHRA Division Five race held at Thunder Road Dragway, Colorado. A final 9.39/145.37 beat Harrison. The best national event times were 8.640 at Seattle and 157.61 at Pomona. |

Notes: Andy replaced Dave Kanners on the team. Michael Beach photo from Martin, MI. Also ran 8.99/150.25 at Indy 1977, 8.70 at Englishtown 77, 8.75 at Columbus. | Twenty-four cars attempted to qualify at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals. Two AMC Hornets qualified in the top half of the field. Wally Booth got the #3 spot while Mannarino's 8.77 got him the #7 spot in the show. Another 8.77 at 154 beat Carl Hobson in round one, while Booth lost to Joe Satmary. That put AMC's hopes on Andy and he didn't disappoint in round two where he "avenged" a win over Satmary who fouled with an 8.70/155. The AMC's run came to an end in the semifinals where he lost to Frank Iaconio. Andy qualified on the "bump" for the eight-car field at Sanair for the NHRA Grandnationals with an 8.88/153. His opening round 8.92 lost to Larry Lombardo's 8.75 in Bill Jenkins' Monza. E-Town 155.74 was the team's best NHRA national event speed. Qualified 17th at Indy 8.991 150.75 |

Notes: Racing in Division One in "77-'78 was not exactly the best place to be when learning the ropes in Pro Stock. But that's just where Don Campanello found himself. The competition was really fierce between Larry Lombardo and the "Team Jenkins" car and Frank Iaconio. Those two won the bulk of the races. But maybe having such tuff competition also brings you along quicker as you have to compete or drop out. So Don worked hard to get competitive.'77 was not one of his best years in racing, but it was a learning experience. Don was at Englishtown on May 1 for the NHRA Division One Opener. He qualified #5 in the eight-car field, but then it rained, and the race was postponed until the following week(May 8). He qualified #12 at NHRA Englishtown at 8.890 (no speed). Lost round one to Frank Iaconio, 8.71/155 to 8.93/152.80. Entered but did not race at NHRA Indianapolis IN 9/77. |
