Notes: 1976 NHRA Pro Stock World Champion. Ran 8.71 (National Record) at Gainesville 3/76, 8.68 (National Record) at Englishtown 7/76. |Larry Lombardo drove Bill Jenkins' Monza at NHRA events. He did not race it at any IHRA or AHRA sanctioned events as Ken Dondero drove Jenkins' other car in AHRA competition and they did not compete in IHRA. Larry started the season at the Phoenix Winter Classic in January It was a sixteen-car field, and he qualified #4 with an 8.92. Lombardo improved to the meet's best numbers for Pro Stock at 8.78/155.17. He stopped Wayne Gapp in the semifinals and faced Richie Zul in the final. An 8.80/154.37 got him the victory over Zul's 8.94/153. At Pomona, car owner Bill Jenkins jumped back behind the wheel, but at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals, Larry took over. There he qualified #1 with an 8.73 and in the first round, he beat Don Nicholson. His opponent, Shelby Jester, fouled against him in round two and Larry advanced with an 8.81/153.84. In the semifinals, he beat Bob Glidden's 8.83 Pinto effort with an 8.74/155.70. This put him into the final against Warren Johnson who was competing in only his eighth NHRA national event. Larry's final round 8.71/155.70 reset the NHRA ET record and got the win over Johnson's big block Camaro at 8.76/156. Another win came at the NHRA Division 1 Opener at Englishtown. There his final round 8.74/155 stopped Zul's 8.83/154 for the victory. Larry also won the next NHRA Division 1 race at Cayuga as well. At Columbus, for the NHRA Springnationals, an 8.93 qualified #6 and in round one, his 9.06/154.37 beat Tom Michalek, but in round two an 8.94/155.97 lost to Johnson's 8.87/153. A week later (June 20), he won the Division 1 race at Maple Grove where a final round 8.76/154.10 beat Dave Kanners' 8.82/155. Best times in the final of the Sanair event at 8.590/157.89.

Notes: AHRA world champion in 1975 and 1976. Dondero raced the Vega for Jenkins in '74 and '75 then a Monza in '76, totally dominating AHRA Pro Stock. | Dondero was at Tucson for the AHRA Winternationals where he qualified #2 with an 8.71. He advanced past the first-round easily and in the second round his 9.06 dropped Roy Hill's 9.18. But in the semifinals, he lost to Warren Johnson's 8.99/153 with a 9.04/150.75. He then went to Kansas City for the AHRA Show-Me Nationals. He ran 8.77 and 8.80 to reach the finals where he would get another chance at WJ. Warren had been running much quicker (8.65 and 8.63) during eliminations and was favored to win. But in the final, WJ fouled away an amazing 8.54/160.71 that handed the win to Dondero at 8.80/156.25. At Tulsa for the AHRA Okie Nationals, the final would again come down to these two. Ken out qualified Warren, running 8.83/155.70 for the pole, but Johnson was close behind at 8.90/155. During eliminations, Dondero had run 9.09/142.85 and 8.88/154.10. WJ was just a bit quicker with times of 8.87/153 and 8.86/155. It was a close final, but Warren's 8.80/155 prevailed over Dondero's 8.87/154. Ken then went to Detroit where he won the AHRA Grandnationals by stopping Wally Booth in the final. The AHRA Springnationals were run at St. Louis and Ken set Low ET and Top Speed in qualifying #1 with an 8.77/156.23. Once again, he reached the final and this time a 9.04/151.50 gave him the victory over Jerry Haas' 9.15/149. Not sure if I can believe the times turned at Green Valley for the AHRA Nationals. Everyone’s times were two tenths lower here than they had ever run before. But the reported numbers for Dondero were 8.53 in qualifying #1, and then an opening round 8.50 followed by an 8.54 in the semifinals. He faced Bobby Marriott in the final and won with an unheard of 8.45. Green Valley times were often suspect.

Notes: Won Beech Bend WCS over Bob Glidden on 8/22/76 at 8.783/153.32. Ran 8.65 at Seattle, 8.68/155.17 at Indy. | This was Wally Booth's dream season in the class. Except for the world championships, he was hard to beat. The cut and welded cylinder heads made the AMCs the cars to beat. Both Booth and AMC stablemate Dave Kanners had their best seasons. It’s funny because Wally was about to give up on his Hornet. He showed up at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals in a Vega. He qualified the car, but lost to Bob Glidden in the opening round. He returned to competition in the Hornet, but it wasn't until April before he got his first win. It came at the second NHRA Division 2 race at DeSoto. It wasn't long after that he was in the final at the NHRA Cajun Nationals at LaPlace Dragway. Booth set Low ET in qualifying with an 8.80, and he reached the final against Lee Shepherd. Wally must have been tired as, after taking a little snooze on the line, he decided to chase down Shepherd for the win. But his 8.88/153.32 was good for the runner-up spot as it wasn't enough to catch Lee, who won with a 9.07/151. He went to Detroit to run the AHRA Grandnationals and came away with another runner-up finish, losing to Ken Dondero in the final. It had been a long dry spell since he had won his last NHRA National event ('74 Gatornationals), but he finally won another at the NHRA Springnationals at National Trail. He qualified #1 with an 8.82 and improved to 8.77/154.63 in the first round, to beat Shepherd's 9.08. He had the lowest ET in round two as well when his 8.84/154.10 took out Richie Zul's 9.04/152. He was to face a surprisingly strong Charlie Reed in the semifinals, but Reed was unable to show, so Wally singled with an 8.78/154.37. He faced #2 qualifier Warren Johnson in the final, and Booth dished up an 8.74 (Low ET) at 154.63 to take the win over WJ's 8.81/156. At Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals, Booth’s 8.69 qualified #2. A first-round 8.76 beat Paul Blevins, and in round two, his 8.73 got around Glidden at 8.87. He ran into the "other" Hornet of Kanners in the semifinals, and Dave's 8.79/154 beat his quicker 8.77/152.80. Best NHRA national event times were 8.627/157.06 low qualifying effort at Sanair.

Notes: Bob qualified #8 at Columbus with an 8.994/150.00, and in round one, his 9.13/148.27 beat fellow Division 1 racer Rich Simone's 9.19/148.51. In round two, his 9.12/147.29 lost to Bob Glidden's 8.92/152.02. At NHRA Englishtown, Bob qualified #8 again at 8.852/153.84. Unfortunately, Bob broke in round one, sending Don Campanello on to a 9.201/148.00 win. Bob qualified #6 at 8.850/153.58 at NHRA Sanair. He lost to Larry Lombardo in round one, 8.65/156.79 to 8.86/155.17. At Indy, Bob qualified #14 at 8.880/151.00. He lost to Frank Iaconio in round one, 8.804/152.02 to 8.889/151.51. Bob was at Suffolk in November for the Little Guy National Open. His car was running really well as he set Low ET and Top Speed at 8.64/154.90, and in the final, he took the victory with an 8.76/151.77 over Pat Musi. Notes: Gapp was runner up at the Pomona Winters in the four-door Maverick, but he debuted his new Pinto at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals and ran it for the remainder of the 1976 NHRA tour. He qualified #5 with an 8.812/153.32. He was late off the line in the opening round, and his 8.92/152.28 lost to Shelby Jester's 8.94/151. He was at Rockingham in the first week of April for the IHRA Pro-Am Championships. He reached the final against Bob Glidden. The two Pintos in the final may have looked alike, but they didn't run the same as Glidden's 8.41/160 got the victory over Gapp's 8.55/158. Gapp was also runner-up to Glidden at the next IHRA race, the World Nationals held at Amarillo. In the first round, he ran 8.69/157.31 over Jester's 8.85/152. He got the "odd-lot" solo in the semi-final and ran 8.70/156. He slowed to 8.86/145.78 in the final, which was not good enough to beat Glidden's 8.76/157. With the NHRA rules being as they were (heavily factored against the Fords), the team did not race at LaPlace for the NHRA Cajun Nationals, which ran the same weekend as the IHRA event. In May, Gapp also competed in Atlanta for the IHRA Dixie Nationals but failed to reach the finals. The team qualified 10th at the NHRA Springnationals, running 9.051/150.75. In round one, Wayne lost to Warren Johnson, 8.81/154 to 9.14/149.75. He qualified at IHRA Bristol Spring 76 at 8.89/152.80. The two Pinto's of Gapp and Glidden reached the final for the IHRA Springnationals title. Once again, Glidden walked off with the trophy, running 8.68/154 to win over Gapp's 8.71/155. These two would also make up the final at Union Grove early in July for the IHRA Summernationals. This time, the roles were reversed as Gapp's 8.65/158.17 scored a much-deserved victory. They decided to go to Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals and were surprised as their 8.729/156.25 qualified #3. Gapp beat Tom Michalek in round one, 8.925/153.84 to 9.26/149, but lost to Richie Zul in round two on a holeshot, 8.88/152 to Wayne's 8.853/153.32. The E-Town qualifying times were Wayne's best NHRA national event times. Gapp and Roush were at Maryland International for the U.S. P/S Championships shortly after that. Unfortunately, Gapp lost to Warren Johnson in round one. The team did not go to Canada to race at the NHRA Grandnationals. In mid-August, Gapp was at Martin, Michigan, for the PHR Championships. His 8.79/153.82 qualified second to Wally Booth's 8.75. Only eleven cars showed, so Wayne ran 8.84 in round two after an easy first-round win over Pat Ulik. But a late 8.83/153.32 in the semi-final lost to Joe Satmary's 8.85/152. He had one of only two Fords to qualify at Indy (Lee Hunter was the other) for the NHRA U.S. Nationals. An 8.838/152.80 gave him the #11 spot in the field. Both Fords lost in the opening round. Gapp's 8.849/153.32 went down to eventual winner Booth's 8.75/154.

Notes: The team purchased the car from Rick Brantley unfinished. Early in May, he was at LaPlace Dragway for the NHRA Cajun Nationals. A career-best (to this point) 8.90/151.51 qualified #3 in the eight-car field. An opening round 9.15 beat Mickey Mills, but in the semifinals, his 9.12/149.25 lost to Wally Booth's 8.83/153. Shortly after that (May 16), he was at El Paso for the NHRA Division Four race. His 9.53/142.63 qualified #5 and gave him the honor of racing low qualifier Lee Shepherd in the first round. It didn't go so well as his 9.68/140.40 lost to Shepherd's 9.51/144. Bobby qualified #15 at the NHRA Springnationals with a 9.19. He fouled in the first round against Charlie Reed. Weight Break car. Questionable ET from the infamous 1976 Green Valley AHRA race.

Notes: Also ran 8.969 at Gainesville Raceway. | This team was tough. Given more time, they would have been major contenders. But Jon Kaase was hired away by "Dyno Don" Nicholson at the end of the year and Don went on to become the '77 NHRA Pro Stock World Champion. Ford's 8.96 at the NHRA Gatornationals qualified #14. In the opening round of eliminations, his 8.99/150.00 lost to Roy Hill's 8.80/155. The team was at Miami-Hollywood for the IHRA Winternationals but the car broke against Bob Glidden in the first round. Larry Ford drove the Pinto to Low ET at Bristol for the IHRA All-American Nationals in September with an 8.65. He made it into the final only to lose to Bob Glidden.

Notes: Swept both IHRA races at Bristol in 76. Won Springs with an 8.68 at 154.63, then won the All Americans at Bristol with an 8.65 at 156.25. Set National Record at 156.25 at NHRA Gators. Ran 155.44 at NHRA Pomona Winters. | Bob was not happy with the NHRA's Pro Stock weight breaks for '76. The 351 powered Fords were carrying a lot more weight compared to the '75 season. More weight meant more breakage of parts. Glidden started the season at the Phoenix Winter Classic on January 25. He qualified #2 with an 8.90 and lasted until the second round before losing to Wayne Gapp's four-door Maverick. At Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, these two would meet again only this time in the final. Bob qualified #3 with an 8.80 and he beat Wally Booth and Roy Hill in the first two rounds. In the semifinals, he came up against low-qualifier Bill Jenkins. Bob got a bit of luck when Jenkins fouled away an 8.77/153 while Glidden advanced with an 8.86/155.70. Gapp and Glidden met in their ninth NHRA final. Glidden got his ninth NHRA National event victory with an 8.82/155.70 beating Wayne's 8.91/153. At the NHRA Gatornationals, an 8.78 qualified #3. He scored an easy first-round win and then beat Lee Edwards in the second round with an 8.87/154.63. In the semifinals, he met Jenkins' Monza again, only this time it was Larry Lombardo behind the wheel. Bob tried hard, but his 8.83 was no match for the Monza's 8.74. He did leave with a new NHRA speed record of 156.52. At the NHRA Springnationals, he qualified #4 and in the first round, his 8.89/152.28 beat Shelby Jester in Andy White's Monza. An 8.92/152.02 beat Bob Ingles' 9.12/147 in round two while another 8.92 at 153 lost to Warren Johnson's 8.83/153 in the semifinals. While Bob wasn't happy with the NHRA side of things he was dominating on the IHRA circuit. The NHRA tour was at Englishtown for the Summernationals in July. Glidden's 8.77 qualified #7. He made it into the second round where his 8.87 lost to Wally Booth's 8.73. Best NHRA ET was 8.772 at the Summers.

Notes: The best NHRA times were a great 8.670/157.61 #2 qualifier at Seattle. | Kanners started his season at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. He qualified #4 with an 8.81 as he had the only AMC in the field as Wally Booth had switched to a Vega for this race. He upheld the AMC honor by running 8.88/153.06 in the opening round to beat Dick Landy's 8.99/153. But in round two, he fouled away an 8.87/153.06 against Don Nicholson, who advanced with a 9.03/153. By the time the NHRA Gatornationals was run, there once again were two competitive AMC Pro Stock cars as Booth returned to his Hornet. Dave easily out-qualified the other Hornet, running 8.77/154.90 for the #2 spot in the field. In round one, Charlie Reed's 8.97/150 lost to his 8.86/154.10. A second-round 8.88/153.58 caught Roy Hill snoozing and beat his 8.84/155. But in the semifinals, Warren Johnson's 8.78/156 sent Dave's 8.84/154.37 packing for home. Maskin and Kanners were just getting started with their cutting and welded cylinder head research. They were finding more power as the season progressed, and it showed.

Notes: Lee ran 8.67 under AHRA rules for their Tucson event in January. He then qualified #10 at NHRA Pomona at 8.978/152.54. In round one, Lee fouled against Warren Johnson; WJ's 8.97/155.17 won despite Lee's better 8.82/154. He qualified #7 at NHRA Gainesville at 8.829/154.63. Notes: Finished number 2 in 1976. Photo from the 1976 NHRA Gatornationals, Gainesville, Florida. 156.23 Gainesville. 8.74 AHRA Tucson. 158.45 Englishtown Summernationals (National Record) at 156.25 NHRA Springnationals Top Speed. | Warren Johnson had always run well in Pro Stock, but he really improved in '76. His season started well by winning the AHRA Winternationals in January at Tucson. He qualified #4 with an 8.74/152.02. After an easy first-round win, he beat Randy Humphrey in round two with a 9.05. He had to race Ken Dondero driving Bill Jenkins' Monza in the semifinals, and Warren proved up to the task, running 8.99/153.32 over Dondero's 9.04/150. In the final, he faced Lee Edwards in an all Camaro battle. Johnson got a slight holeshot, and his 9.01/153.32 held off Edwards' 9.00/149 for the victory. His next race was the Phoenix Winter Classic. It was another sixteen-car field, and his 8.90 qualified #1. In the first two rounds, he dropped Gary Hansen and Humphrey before losing to Richie Zul's similar big-block Camaro in the semifinals. After that, it was off to Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. A strong 8.79 qualified #2 behind Bill Jenkins himself, driving his Monza to 8.77 for the pole. Warren beat Edwards in round one, but in the second round, he lost to Wayne Gapp, who was still driving the "Gapp and Roush" four-door Maverick. At only his fourth ever NHRA National event, he made it to his first Pro Stock final at Gainesville for the Gatornationals. An 8.80 qualified him #4, and in the opening round, he beat Paul Blevins. He picked up to 8.78/156.25 in round two to beat Zul's 8.83. Another 8.78 at 156.52 beat Dave Kanners' 8.84 in the semifinals. In the final, he faced Larry Lombardo, who was now driving Jenkins' car. Warren ran his best, an 8.76/156.25, but failed to beat Lombardo's Low ET (and new NHRA ET record) 8.71/155. On April 11, he was at Kansas City International for the AHRA Show-Me Nationals. The times turned were unreal (never sure about the times turned at KCIR). Johnson ran 8.65 and 8.63 to reach the final, where he faced Dondero. Warren fouled in the final, wasting an 8.54/160.71, while Ken motored to the victory with an 8.80/156. He then won the NHRA Division 5 Opener at Denver. Warren set lot ET and Top Speed and a final round 9.40/145.40 beat Dale Falk. He won AHRA's third race of the season as well, the Okie Nationals held at Tulsa in May. Once again, it was a fight between WJ and Jenkins' driver, Dondero. Ken held the upper hand in qualifying, running 8.83/155, while Warren followed with an 8.90/155.17. Johnson picked up the pace during eliminations, running 8.87/153.32 and 8.86/155.17, while Dondero's best was 8.88. The two faced off in the final, and Johnson won with an 8.80 (Low ET) at 155.17 over Ken's 8.87/154. He got into another NHRA final at Columbus for the Springnationals. WJ's 8.84/155.17 qualified #2 behind Wally Booth's 8.82. These two would work their way into the final. In the first round, his 8.81/154.37 beat Gapp's 9.14/149. A second-round 8.87/153.58 took out Lombardo's 8.94/155. In the semifinals, an 8.83/153 beat Bob Glidden's 8.92/153. Booth had been running strong in eliminations, and in the final, his 8.74/154 easily covered WJ's 8.81/156.25 (Top Speed). Englishtown was his next stop for the NHRA Summernationals. He qualified #5 with an 8.76/158.45 (Top Speed and a new NHRA speed record). He lasted until the second round, where his 8.80/157.61 lost to Lombardo's 8.72/154. He followed the NHRA tour to Canada for the Grandnationals. He qualified #3 in the eight-car field with an 8.69/158.73 (Top Speed and another NHRA speed record), and he lasted until the semifinal, where his 8.79/155.97 lost to Booth's 8.69/155. After that, it was off to Martin, Michigan, for the PHR Championships. He continued to qualify well with an 8.83 that got him the #3 spot in the sixteen-car field. Unfortunately, he broke in the first round.

Notes: Landy was at Tucson Dragway in Jan for the AHRA Winternationals. He qualified #3 with an 8.74/153.58, but an off-pace 9.23 lost to Gordie Rivera in the opening round. He then went to Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, where his 8.99 qualified #12. Unfortunately, he lost to Dave Kanners in the first round. Winner at Sacramento Raceway 2/76. His next stop was at Famoso for the Bakersfield March Meet. An 8.85 qualified #2 behind Larry Huff's 8.82. He was upset in the first round, by Tom Chelbana. On May 16, Landy was at El Paso Dragway for the NHRA Division Four race. He beat Paul Peyton's 10.10 in the first round, with a 9.49/136.04, and in the semifinals, his 9.48/142.18 beat Kelly Chadwick. He faced Lee Shepherd in the final, and Shepherd's 9.33/143 got the victory over Landy's 9.48/128.26 runner-up effort. The car was destroyed at OCIR during the PDA Championships on July 31. He had set Low ET while qualifying #1 for the eight-car field with an 8.87/154.63. He made an easy solo in round one, when Sonny Bryant's Camaro broke. In the semifinals, he ran 8.86/150.25 to beat Kevin Rotty's 8.96/153. But then all hell broke loose. A tire blew, and the car took a hard left into his guardrail. It then crossed the track and smacked the guardrail on the opposite side of the track. The car was a mess, but he was ok. Ran 8.79/155.79 at Fremont Raceway WCS 3/76. Ran 9.04/150.25 track record at Tucson 5/17/76.

Notes: Charlie was the first alternate at Gainesville at 9.035/149.75 but got into the show and lost to Dave Kanners in round one, despite improving, 8.86/154 to 8.97/150.00. At Columbus, Charlie qualified #7 at 8.950/151.00. He beat a fouling Bobby Marriott in round one with a 9.33/117. In round two, Charlie took out Roy Hill, 9.07/138.46 to 9.39/120. Charlie was unable to show against eventual winner Wally Booth in the semis. Charlie shocked the world at Indy, qualifying #3 at 8.716/149.50 and was reported to be running a big block Chevy in the Vega. Unfortunately, he fouled against Roy Hill in round one, and coasted to a disappointing 9.43/129 as Hill took the win despite breaking. Charlie also ran at least as quick as 8.89/149 in match race trim. We need his. best match race times (if they were quicker and faster than Charlie's legal times).

Notes: This Vega was conceived and built by Dave Smith of Ca. It did have a 3x2 frame as rules were changing rapidly when it was started. The front suspension was a Dave Smith created Don Edmunds torsion bar set up from a sprint car. The car really hooked up and won a lot of early races. - Jim Baker

Notes: Lee started his season at Irwindale's Grand Premier event. It was an eight-car show, and his 8.90/153.32 qualified #2 behind Roy Hill's strong 8.79/154. Surprisingly, both lost in the opening round of eliminations. Hunter lost to Mark Yuill. At Tucson, for the AHRA Winternationals, he qualified #5 with an 8.77. Unfortunately, he lost in the opening round. At Pomona, for the NHRA Winternationals, his 8.92 qualified #9, but he lost to low qualifier Bill Jenkins in the first round, as he pushed the 'tree too hard and fouled away a 9.20/152.25. He had to take the chance as Jenkins won with an 8.80/155. Sacramento held an eight-car Pro Stock show at the beginning of March, and Hunter was there, but in the first round, his off-pace 9.31/154.64 lost to the eventual winner Dick Landy's 8.71/155. Lee also competed at the Bakersfield March Meet, but he lost to Don Lorentzen in the first round. Another eight-car Pro Stock race took place at Ontario Motor Speedway. Hunter's 8.76 (Low ET) at 153.84 qualified #1. An 8.97/154.61 beat Jack Manchester's 9.14/148 in the first round, and an 8.86/153.06 in the semifinals beat Randy HGumphrey's 9.04/149. He faced Landy in the final, and Hunter had problems and shut down to 12.24 while Landy legged it to 8.95 for the victory. Lee did not compete at the Gatornationals. Fremont held the NHRA Division Seven Opener, and he finished runner-up to Larry Huff there. He qualified #1 at the NHRA Division 7 race at OCIR with an 8.85, and he beat Gordie Rivera in the first round, but he had trouble in the semifinals and slowed to 9.02 at just 128 in a loss to eventual winner Bill Bagshaw's 8.87/155. Lee did win the third NHRA Division 7 race held at Sacramento. He also won the second PDA Championship race at Fremont in July. He stopped Mark Yuill in the final. The final PDA race was held at OCIR, and Hunter beat Larry Huff and Gary Hansen to reach the final, where he faced Kevin Rotty. The two had a good race, but Rotty's 8.99 nipped Lee's 9.00 at the finish line. He qualified #5 at Indy for the NHRA US Nationals with an 8.809, giving him the honor of being the quickest Ford. Unfortunately, he fouled against Paul Blevins in the first round. Another good showing came at Fremont for a sixteen-car show. Lee ran as well as 8.78 before losing to Larry Lombardo driving Bill Jenkins' Monza in the final. He qualified #9 at Seattle for the NHRA Fallnationals, but an 8.94 in the first round, lost to eventual winner Wally Booth's 8.74. At Ontario Motor Speedway for the NHRA World Finals, his 8.93/149.75 qualified #11. An off-pace 9.11 in the first round, lost to Bob Glidden's 8.87. Ran 8.76/157.89 at Sacramento CA 1976, and 8.74/157.34 at NHRA D7 Fremont 3/76. Photo from the 1976 NHRA US Nationals, Indianapolis Raceway Park. The car was purchased from Bob Glidden. Ran consistent 8.80s. Ran 8.76/153.84 at Ontario Motor Speedway 3/76. Won Arizona-California Pro Stock Series event at Tucson on 5/17/76, running shut-off times with a best of 9.09/144.23.

Notes: Roy had probably the strongest Mopar on the NHRA trail in '76. He started the season at Irwindale's Grand Premier race, setting Low ET and Top Speed in qualifying #1 at 8.79/154.63. The closest anyone could get to him in qualifying was Lee Hunter's 8.90 way back in second. But in the opening round, Hill fouled against Gary Hansen. At Tucson, Arizona, for the AHRA Winternationals. He qualified #6 in the eight-car field with an 8.80 but lost to Ken Dondero's 9.06 in the first round, with an off-pace 9.18. He then went to Beeline for the NHRA Phoenix Winter Classic, where he qualified #7 in the sixteen-car field with an 8.98. He beat Jack Schorr in the first round with a 9.00/152.54 before losing to Richie Zul in round two. At Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, he qualified #7 with an 8.84/156.25. His 8.86/155.17 stopped Shelby Jester in the first round, but he lost to eventual winner Bob Glidden's 8.86/155 with an 8.93/154.10 in round two. Hill ran strong at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornats. There he qualified #6 with an 8.82. A even better 8.80/155.70 beat Larry Ford's 8.99/150 in round one, but he was slow off the line in round two, where his 8.84/155.44 lost to Dave Kanners' 8.88/153. until the second round, where his 8.84. He then made the trip to Miami-Hollywood for the IHRA Winternationals. Roy lasted until the semifinals before his 8.81/156.79 lost to Scott Shafiroff's 8.77/154. He ended the month of March with a win on the 28th at Warner Robins NHRA Division 2 Opener. He qualified #1 with an 8.91 and then got the "odd lot" solo in the first round, where he advanced with an 8.94. Roy set Low ET in the semifinal when he ran 8.85/153.05 to best Reid Whisnant's 9.08/151. He ran 8.85/154.63 (Top Speed) for the victory over Lamar Walden in the final. Roy showed that the Mopars could still run under NHRA's weight breaks by qualifying #2 at the NHRA Cajun Nationals (8.89) and setting Top Speed at 154.63. Unfortunately, he broke the motor and was unable to run eliminations. It was interesting to note that he still sat third in the NHRA Pro Stock points after this race behind Warren Johnson and Glidden. He also looked strong at the IHRA Dixie Nationals at Atlanta on May 23, where he reached the final against Glidden only to break on the line. He had run 8.88 in the semifinal, beating "Dyno Don" Nicholson. On June 5, he won the third NHRA Division 2 race at Blaney, South Carolina. He needed only a 9.23 to win as Wally Booth broke a clutch in the final. The following week (June 13), he was at National Trail for the NHRA Springnationals. Only two Mopars qualified, and Hill was the quickest with an 8.88 (#3). The two Mopars met in the opening round, and Roy's 9.14/148 beat Bobby Yowell's 9.22/150. But in the second round, an ailing 9.39/120.00 lost to Charlie Reed's 9.07/138. His performance was off at the NHRA Summernationals, where he was the #12 qualifier. In the first round, his 8.95/152.02 lost to Kanner's 8.81/155. He did better at Suffolk for the fourth NHRA Division Two race the following weekend. He finished runner-up to Richie Zul's 8.79/153 with an 8.79 of his own at 154.37 (Top Speed). Petty Built.

Notes: We need confirmation on these numbers. Were they run in 1976 or 1977? Confirmed 8.77 and 8.78 at 155.17 at Fremont WCS 3/76. Huff was running well at the Bakersfield March Meet. He qualified #1 for the sixteen-car field with an 8.82/153.06. In the opening round of competition, he beat Dale Falk with an 8.92/151.51. An 8.91/152.28 in round two dropped Gary Hansen's 9.05/148. It looked like he was on his way to winning his semifinal race against Tom Chelbana, but the Dodge broke at the halfway mark, and Tom advanced into the final with a 9.03.

Notes: Paul's best NHRA national event times came at Indy, where he qualified #13 with an 8.87/154.37 for the NHRA U.S. Nationals. His 8.803/153.58 in the opening round beat Lee Hunter. In round two, his 8.94/150.50 fell to Larry Lombardo's 8.70/155. Shortly after that, he was at Atco Raceway for the final NHRA Division One race. Paul's 8.79 qualified second to Lombardo's 8.71. These two would meet in the final. Going into their final round, Blevins actually had the quicker of the two in their semi-final races. Paul had ran 8.75 while Larry was a tick behind at 8.76. The final was close, but Lombardo's 8.75/157 got the win over Blevins' 8.77/153.58. He did not race at the NHRA Fallnationals but was at Ontario Motor Speedway for the NHRA World Finals. An 8.91/150.00 qualified #8. In the opening round, his 8.90 beat Gordie Rivera's 9.02 but in round two, Wally Booth's 8.83 got the better of his 8.88. Englishtown held it's annual Fallnationals race and it was normally run in September but it ran in November this year due to weather. It was an eight-car show and Blevins ran 8.81/155.70 (Top Speed) in the first round over Don Campanello. In the semi-final, his 8.78/153.58 beat John Theofiles' 8.90/150. He faced Bob Ingles in the final and an 8.92/153.58 finished runner-up to Bob's 8.74/153.

Notes: Don qualified well at Pomona for the Winternationals with the 8.852/153.32 (using a unique Doug Nash clutchless 5-speed transmission). In round one, he beat Kevin Rotty, 9.26/146.81 to 9.31/146. In round two, Dave Kanners fouled away an 8.87/153, and Don progressed with a 9.03/153.58. In the semifinals, Wayne Gapp's 8.87/153 beat his off pace 9.30/135.74. At the Gatornationals, an 8.843/153.32 qualified #9, setting up a first-round meeting with low qualifier Larry Lombardo in Bill Jenkins' Monza. Larry won that first-round battle, 8.77/155 to a 12-second shutoff. Nicholson went to Atlanta on May 23 for the IHRA Dixie Nationals, where he lasted until the semifinal before his 8.91 lost to Roy Hill's 8.88. Don failed to qualify at the NHRA Springnationals as the Fords were at a severe weight disadvantage in NHRA racing, and his 9.267/148.02 was the third alternate. Don was spending a lot more time match racing to make ends meet. At the NHRA Summernationals at Englishtown, Don chose to run the car as a C/Altered in the competition class rather than run it in Pro Stock. He did not enter another NHRA national event in 1976. Don was back at Gainesville for the Turkey Trot Nationals near the end of the year. He qualified #1 for the eight-car show with an 8.76 (Low ET) at 152.80. In the opening round, his 8.92/150.50 beat Tony Wood's 9.18/151 in the former Reid Whisnant Duster and another 8.76 at 153.58 (Top Speed) beat Pat Ulik's Hornet at 9.18/146. But Unfortunately, Don had a little nap in the final, and his 9.04/150.00 lost to Lamar Walden's 9.12/148.

Notes: Ran 8.76/155.70 at Indy in a runner-up effort. Zul was at Englishtown on May 9 for the NHRA Division One opener. He qualified #2 with an 8.83/155.70 (Top Speed) just behind Larry Lombardo's pole-winning 8.82/150. In the first round, his 8.82/155 beat Rich Simone's 9.07. A semifinal 8.86/154.37 cut Paul Blevins 8.98/151 and set up a final round between the two Low ET qualifiers. Even though Zul ran a consistent 8.83/154 in the final, it was not enough as Larry took the victory with an 8.74/155. At the end of May, he was at Great Meadows for an NHRA Pro Stock Circuit race. He qualified #1 with an 8.94/155.80 (Top Speed). Because only seven cars showed, he got the "odd-lot" solo in the first round, and set Low ET at 8.90/150.50. Don Campanello got crossed up in his Monza in the semifinal, and Zul advanced with an 8.99/141.95. He faced another big block Camaro in the final, Carl Hobson, who had run 8.98 in the semifinal. The two had a great race, but Zul's slightly quicker 8.97/144.09 lost to Hobson's 8.98/153. Richie had the second quickest Camaro to qualify at Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals. His 8.93 got him into the #5 spot. In the opening round, a 9.03/152.02 beat John Theofiles' 9.19/147. But in round two, eventual winner Wally Booth's 8.84/154 beat his 9.04/152. He was back at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals in July. His 8.77/156.79 qualified #7, and an opening-round 8.92 beat Frank Iaconio's 8.98. Zul beat the quickest Ford from qualifying (#3) Wayne Gapp in round two, but he fouled away an 8.88/152.80 against Lombardo in the semifinal. He had to take the chance as Larry ran 8.74/154. He stopped off at Maryland International for the US Pro Stock Championships, and while he beat a fouling Bill Clayton in the first round, with an 8.83/154.37, he lost soon after and failed to reach the finals. The following weekend (July 18), he was at Suffolk for the NHRA Division Two race. While he was neither the quickest nor the fastest, he managed to win the event. His final round 8.79/153.84 beat Roy Hill's 8.79/154. Early in August, he went to Canada for the NHRA Grandnationals. He was always the second-fastest Camaro qualifier at the NHRA national events; he was again as his 8.79/155.97 qualified #5 in the eight-car field. In the first round, his 8.86 lost to Booth's 8.68. Lombardo and Zul continued their battle in Division One at Maryland on August 15. The two faced off in the final, and Larry's 8.69/156 got the best of Richie's 8.92/153.84 runner-up effort.

Notes: Frank Iaconio and Ray Allen debuted their new Monza at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals. Ray was supposed to drive, but did not have his license renewed. So, Frank drove and continued to drive. He qualified #15 at 9.003/151.77, and in the opening round, his 8.985/152.26 lost to Richie Zul's 8.929/152.54. It didn't take long before the car became a contender. At Indy, for the NHRA US Nationals, an 8.814/153.58 qualified #6. Frank ran 8.804/152.02 to beat Bob Ingles at 8.88/151 in round one. He ran 8.821/153.06 to beat Roy Hill's 8.90/152 in round two. Frank’s best run came next with an 8.791/154.10 over Joe Satmary's 8.86/152 in the semifinals. He faced the AMC Hornet of Wally Booth in the final. Booth's winning semifinal ET was 8.69, so Frank took a chance on the 'tree. He fouled away an 8.815/145.86 while Booth picked up the victory with an 8.68/155. That was the team's last NHRA national event of the year.

Notes: Bagshaw attempted to qualify at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, but his 9.09 best failed to crack the 9.06 "bump." Things went better at the Bakersfield March Meet, where an 8.95 qualified #3. He reached the final against upstart Tom Chelbana and a 9.00/150.25 gave him the victory over Tom's fouling 9.12/138. He also won the second NHRA Division 7 race held at OCIR. He beat Chelbana in the first round, before running a great 8.87/155.17 (Top Speed) to beat Lee Hunter's 9.02/128 in the semifinals. He picked up to an 8.82 (Low ET) at 154 in the final for the victory over Kevin Rotty's 9.06/150. Bill also won the OCIR Funny Car 500 at the end of May. There he stopped Mark Yuill in the final. Times and info from National Dragster, 3/19/76. Ran 8.90/152.06 at Fremont Raceway WCS 3/76.

In the semi-final, his 8.89/151.77 lost to Pat Musi's 8.79/153. He did not drive at any NHRA national events this year. Andy sold this car to Fred (Shafer?) BORT = AKA Balls Out Racing Team! Notes: We need to confirm that this car was run in 1976. It did not run on the NHRA tour. When did the team sell it?

Notes: Gapp and Roush were cornerstones of Ford Pro Stock racing. From their Boss 429-powered Mavericks through their 351-powered Pintos, Mustang IIs, and this Maverick. But '76 was the beginning of the end for the team. NHRA rules all but factored the Fords out of existence, and the team was forced to go elsewhere to be competitive. They found the IHRA rules more to their liking and raced more under that organization. Wayne started the year in the four-door Maverick. Wayne qualified #6 at Beeline Dragway for the Phoenix Winter Classic with an 8.96. In the opening round, he improved to 8.92/152.54 to defeat Brad Yuill's 9.25/146. In round two, he beat Bob Glidden, but he lost to eventual winner Larry Lombardo in the semi-final. He had a great outing at the Pomona Winters. He qualified #6 at 8.831/153.58. He took out Gordie Rivera in round one, 8.86/153.84 to 9.05/152. In round two, he eked out a win over Warren Johnson, 8.92/152.80 to 8.95/154. He easily defeated an off-pace Dyno Don Nicholson in the semis, 8.87/153.32 to 9.30/135. But he faced Glidden in their ninth NHRA final round match-up (and their last). Bob won a definitive victory in the final round, 8.821/155.70 to Wayne's 8.916/153.32. Wayne debuted a 1976 Pinto at Gainesville (see the other entry).

Notes: Photo from the 1976 NHRA Gatornationals, Gainesville, Florida. On May 9, Hobson was at Englishtown for the NHRA Division One opener. He qualified #3 with an 8.90, and in the first round, his 8.87/153.06 beat Don Campanello's 9.10/149. Unfortunately, in the semifinal, he fouled against the eventual winner Larry Lombardo. Carl won an NHRA Pro Stock Circuit race at Great Meadows, N.J., on May 29. It was an eight-car show, and in the first round, he beat Bob Ingles with a 9.02/153.32. In the semifinals, his 8.98/152.80 beat Tom Gray. The final was against the similar big-block Camaro of Richie Zul. Hobson got a slight holeshot, and his 8.98/153.84 got the victory over Zul's 8.97 at just 144.
