Notes: Photo from the 1974 NHRA Gatornationals, Gainesville, Florida. This car had a very short lifespan. Don Hardy built the car which used quick-release body panels. The Gapp and Roush built engine used Brooks rods and pistons, a General Kinetics cam, and twin Holley Dominators on an Edelbrock tunnel ram manifold. The heads, of course, were also done by Gapp and Roush. The rear end was a Ford 9" with 5.67 gears. | The "Gapp and Roush" team debuted their new Mustang II at the NHRA Gatornationals in March. Jack Roush drove it while Wayne Gapp drove the team's Pinto. As shown in the picture, he had the rear window blow out at speed on its first run. They grabbed a replacement off a rent-a-car! Jack then went out and qualified the car #2 with a 9.03/152.28 behind Gapp's 8.99/152 in the Pinto. Both survived the first-round with Jack's 8.94/153.06 beating Paul Blevins' 9.01. Gapp hurt his motor in his first-round win over Bob Glidden and was unable to run in round two. Roush had to carry the "Gapp and Roush" banner himself in round two and his 8.97/152.51 won over Scott Shafiroff's 9.08/149. He beat his third straight Vega driver in the semifinals where his 8.95/152.80 put Frank Iaconio's 9.05/152 on the trailer. This put Jack into the final against Wally Booth and his AMC Hornet. Jack made his worst run of eliminations, a 9.01/152.54 that finished runner-up to Booth's 8.97/152.

Notes: IHRA World Record 1974 from Southland Raceway (8.845/151). Ran 8.885/153.06 at NHRA Ontario 10/74, losing to Glidden in the semis. Confirm it was this car and not the 70 Mustang. Ran 9.03 at Gainesville and 9.08 at Indy. | Don debuted his new Mustang II at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals. He qualified #11, but a first-round 9.03/152.02 lost to Wally Booth's 8.97/152. At Rockingham for the IHRA Pro-Am Championships, "Dyno" qualified #1 with a 9.00/151.26. He went on to win his first race with the Mustang II since its debut at the Gatornationals. Not only did he win, but he set Low ET and Top Speed at 8.91/152.28. In the final, Nicholson beat a fouling Reid Whisnant with an 8.93. At Bristol in June for the IHRA Springnationals, a 9.26 qualified #6 in the field, but Don hurt his engine on the run and was unable to run in eliminations.

Ran 9.02/149.75 at Indy Nationals. 8.96 at Sanair. 8.78/155.17 at PRO race at NY National at 6.75#, CID (listed on Match Race list), 8.96 at Sanair 74. | Jenkins' Vega was still the top Chevy campaigner in '74. He was at Beeline for the AHRA Winternationals where he qualified #2 with an 8.90/153.32 behind Ford campaigner Bob Glidden's 8.89/154. These two would end up in the final. Bill started his march by running 8.92/153.06 to beat Larry Huff's Mopar at 9.25/149. In round two he took out Mike Fons' Mopar with an 8.93/152.80 to Mike's 9.06/149. A semifinal 8.87/153.84 stopped Wayne Gapp's 9.03/151 Pinto effort and advanced Jenkins into the final against Glidden. It was expected to be a close race as Bob had run 8.88, 8.91, and 8.94 to reach the final. Unfortunately, Bill was going to be a bit "Grumpy" after his late start coupled with an 8.85/154.01 lost to Glidden's slower 8.93/152. He had some consolation in that he set a new AHRA ET record on the run. After that, Jenkins had things go his way at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. He qualified #3 behind the Fords of Glidden and Gapp with an 8.98/152.28. In the first round, he met Paul Blevins who was pushing hard to beat Bill as the #1 Chevy, but his off-pace 9.33/148 lost to the "Grump's" 9.05/151.77. In round two, an 8.92/152.02 beat Melvin Yow's 9.12/152. He faced Glidden in the semifinals where a Low ET of the meet 8.91 at 153.06 put the Pinto's 9.09/143 on the trailer. The final was another Ford vs. Chevy match and Bill ran 8.93/152.54 to nip Gapp's close 8.94/152. He qualified #4 at the NHRA Gatornationals with a 9.06/151.00 and in the first round, improved to 9.03/150.00 while beating Hubert Platt's 9.06/151. In the second round Bill took a nap and his 8.97/150.50 lost to Frank Iaconio's 9.12/151. Bill was driving less and less, and he hired Ken Dondero to drive at AHRA events as well as the NHRA Division 1 events. He still drove at most of his match races.

Notes: Nicholson had Don Hardy build him this Mustang to take advantage of NHRA's rule that let cars with a wheelbase of 105" or more run 6.45 lbs. per cubic inch compared to 6.75 if under that wheelbase. That meant that Don's '70 Mustang would come to the line weighing less than a Pinto or a Mustang II. As stated, the car debuted at the NHRA Grandnationals, where Nicholson drove it to 9.07/151.77 to qualify #9. Unfortunately, that set up a first-round meeting with another car set up for the 6.45 break, Wayne Gapp's four-door Maverick which qualified #1 with an 8.86. Don slowed to an off-pace 9.18/147.54 in their race and lost to Gapp's 8.87/150. For the record, Gapp went on to win the race and reset the NHRA ET record. The following week, "Dyno" was at Martin, Michigan, for the PHR Championships. He qualified #3 with an 8.96 and a first-round 9.24 beat Dave Lyall. Don cut a quick light in round two, and his 9.06 beat Wally Booth's quicker 9.02. This set up another meeting with Gapp's trick Maverick in the semifinals. Once again, Gapp got the win; this time, his 8.97 beat Don's 9.10. Wayne went on to win this race as well. The next stop was at Indianapolis for the NHRA US Nationals. Nicholson ran 9.01/151.51 to qualify #3 in the 32 car field. Don ran at Indy with a Gapp & Roush engine and was runner up there. He qualified at 9.01/151, then went 8.96/151.77 during eliminations per Gapp & Roush ad. It debuted at Sanair after damaging the Mustang II in a crash. Don ran a G&R engine at Indy and throughout the rest of the season. Runner up at Indy and hit the semis at Ontario with his best times of the year, 8.885/153.06.

Notes: Ran 8.97 at Maple Grove, 9.13 at Pomona, 9.083, 9.20 at Columbus, 9.17 at Englishtown, 9.12 at Indy. | Scott had one of the strongest Pro Stock Vegas in '74. At Pomona, he had one of three of the Vegas that qualified. His 9.19/149.50 put him in the #12 spot for the show. In the first round, he beat Ken Dondero's 9.31/148 in Don Nicholson's second Pinto with a 9.18/150.75. He beat "Dyno" himself in round two where his 9.13/149.25 stopped Nicholson's 9.24/146. In the semifinals, he came up against his third straight Pinto of eliminations. This one was the "Gapp and Roush" car with Wayne Gapp behind the wheel. Scott fell off to 9.22/144.92 and it wasn't enough to beat Gapp's 9.00/150. At the NHRA Gatornationals, it was the "Gapp and Roush" team that stopped Scott again. This time it was Jack Roush behind the wheel when the two met in the second round. Jack's 8.97/152 put the little Vega's 9.083/149.50 on the trailer. That was Scott’s best NHRA national event ET for the year. He won the Cecil National Open with a final round 9.04 over Frank Iaconio. Shafiroff was back at Cecil County in April for the Spring Pro Stock Championships and while he didn't win, he did run a strong 9.03/151.54 in the first round. On May 5 he was at Green Valley Raceway for the AHRA Grand American Nationals. He was the quickest Chevy qualifier with a 9.02 (#3), but he lost early. Another win came on May 11 at Maple Grove's Dutch Classic. He qualified #1 and then beat Al Joniec in round one, with a 9.03/149.50. In the semifinals, he dropped into the eights with an 8.98 at only 143.34 to beat Dondero, who was now driving for Bill Jenkins. In the final, he was up against the big-block Camaro of Richie Zul. Scott got the holeshot and held on to win. The following week had Zul get some payback when he beat Shafiroff in the final at the NHRA Division 1 race at Cayuga, Ontario. At the NHRA Springnationals, a 9.20/149.50 qualified #6, and he advanced past a broken Sonny Bryant in round one, with a 9.25/148.27. Unfortunately, he fouled against eventual winner Bob Glidden in round two and slowed to 9.61/146.10. He won over a sixteen-car field at Maple Grove's All-American Pro-Series race. Everyone was there. Scott won his first-round race with a 9.12 when Zul had his throttle stick open on his burnout. In the second round, he beat Herb McCandless and, in the semifinals, he got to the finish line first when both he and Gapp ran 9.10. He beat Dick Landy in the final for the title. On June 22, he was back at Maple Grove for the NHRA Division 1 race. Scott qualified #3, but made it into the final against Zul. Shafiroff’s final round 9.15/148.76 lost to Richie's 9.08/149. The next NHRA event was the Summernationals at Englishtown. Scott qualified #13 with a 9.15. In the first round, he faced Jenkins' new driver, Larry Lombardo. Scott was down on power here as his 9.17/148.51 lost to Lombardo's 9.07/150. Like most of the Pro Stock cars that were at Englishtown, Scott made the trip to Maryland International for the second annual Pro Stock Open. He qualified #6 and lasted until round two where he broke against Glidden. Shortly after that, he was at Cecil County for an eight-car Pro Stock show. In round one, he had a close race against Nicholson that saw his 9.06/150 beat "Dyno's" 9.07/148. In the semifinals, he got a great start and his 9.07/150 beat Zul's quicker 9.02/151. This put him into the final against Gapp. Scott ran another good 9.04, but he lost to Gapp's 8.98. He did not follow the NHRA tour to Canada for the Grandnationals. | We need to confirm the 8.90 best time for 1974.

Notes: Qualified third at AHRA Fremont at 9.054/151.77 on 3/30/74. 8.99 at St. Louis 74. | Larry had one of the strongest Mopars in '74, even when running in NHRA competition with their 7.00 lbs per cubic inch weight break for Hemi powered cars. At the AHRA Winternationals, Larry qualified #10 with a 9.24. A first-round 9.25/149.75 lost to Bill Jenkins' 8.92/153. He then went to Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals where he was one of three Mopars to qualify. His 9.22/149.25 put him in the #13 spot for the show. Once again he lost in the first round, this time Wally Booth's 9.09/150 stopped his 9.34/148.02. As mentioned above, he qualified #3 at the AHRA Northern Nationals where he lasted until the semifinals where his 9.07 lost to Bill Bagshaw's 8.93. On April 6 he was at OCIR for the AHRA Grand American race. Huff set Low ET at 8.96 in qualifying #1 and lasted until the final where he fouled away a 9.11/151.77 while Bagshaw motored to the victory with a 9.04/152. His next good showing came at Green Valley on May 8 where he qualified #1 with an 8.91 (Low ET). Unfortunately, he failed to reach the finals. He won the next AHRA Grand American race at Dragway 42. Jenkins fouled against him in the final and Larry took the win with a 9.10/153.58. Another win came at Spokane where he won the AHRA Springnationals by stopping Pete Kost in the final with a 9.19/149.50. The next AHRA Grand American race was the Drag Nationals at Kansas City on July 7. Huff's 9.14/148.51 qualified #2 behind Jenkins' 9.04/150. These two would work their way to the finals. Larry beat Jerry Haas in the first round, with a 9.15 while in the semifinals a 9.18/148.76 advanced when Ronnie Sox fouled. Jenkins ran 9.05 twice to reach the finals against him. In the final, the Vega fell off to 9.09/149, but it was still more than enough to beat Huff's 9.26/148.76. He got back into the winner's circle at St. Louis for the AHRA Gateway Nationals. There he set Low ET at 8.98 and in the final his 8.99/152.07 beat Warren Johnson's 9.10/152. The tables were reversed on August 25 at Tulsa for the AHRA American Challenge race. This time Johnson beat a fouling Huff in the final. Times were close with Warren's 9.22/150 getting the win over Larry's 9.21/149.

Notes: Low qualifier at AHRA Fremont on 3/30/74 at 8.922/153.84. Also ran 8.93 at Fremont, then won the event over Sonny Bryant. | Bill ran 8.94 to qualify #4 at the AHRA Winternationals. Unfortunately, he was a little tired and his first-round 9.25/149.75 lost to Sam Scott's 9.45/144. At Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, a 9.034/150.75 qualified #6. In the first round, he beat Bob Coleman's 9.17/150 with a 9.12/149.25. In round two, a 9.22/144.92 lost to Wayne Gapp's 8.99/151. Bill did not run any other NHRA national events after the Winternationals. He was at Famoso for the Bakersfield March Meet where he cleaned house. He qualified #1 with a 9.10; the next closest qualifier was at 9.30. Bagshaw went on to win the event setting Low ET and Top Speed at 9.08/149.50 along the way. As mentioned above, he won the AHRA Northern Nationals at Fremont on March 17 with all the honors: Low ET, Top Speed and number one qualifier. He took his third big win of the young '74 season on April 6 at the AHRA Grand American at OCIR. Bill qualified #2 with a 9.00 and in the final, he beat low qualifier Larry Huff with a 9.04/152.54 (Top Speed). Bill went on to win the next AHRA Grand American as well. It was held at Green Valley in May. A 9.02 qualified #2 and he went on to beat Warren Johnson's 9.21 in the final with a 9.11. At NHRA's second Division 7 race held at Sacramento in June, Bill qualified #3. He won the event with a 9.21/145.17 in the final over Sonny Bryant's late 9.10/150. He won the next Division 7 race as well. It was held at Irwindale and there, his final round 9.11/149 stopped the Pinto of Lee Hunter. Bill had an unfortunate accident at St. Louis in July. He was there running at the AHRA Gateway Nationals when his car got out of control and crashed into the stands. Two people died and another 19 were injured in the crash.

Notes: Wally started his season at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. He qualified #5 with a 9.03/149.75. A first-round 9.09/150.25 beat Larry Huff's Dodge, but in round two, his 9.11/150.25 lost to Bob Glidden's 9.01/152. In March, AMC informed both Booth and fellow Hornet campaigner Dave Kanners that they were releasing them from their contracts. So when the two teams showed up at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals, both teams had no contracts for the rest of the season. Booth qualified #3 with a 9.05/151.51. An 8.97/152.54 in the first round beat Don Nicholson's 9.03/152, while in round two, his 9.01/152.28 beat Kanners' 9.05/150. In the semifinals, Wally ran 8.95/152.80 to beat Frank Iaconio's 9.05/152. In the final, he faced Jack Roush in the "Gapp & Roush" Mustang II. The Hornet got AMC's first-ever win in Pro Stock at an NHRA national event. Booth ran 8.97/152.80 in the final over Roush's 9.01/152. AMC was so happy with the victory that they renewed their support for the two teams. The timing for the win couldn't have been any better. On March 31, NHRA held its Division 2 Opener at Warner Robins. Wally qualified #1 with a 9.02 and then made his way into the final, where he ran Fred Shafer. Booth took the win by running Low ET and Top Speed with an 8.98/154.10 over Fred's 9.37/146. He also won the Suffolk NHRA Division 2 race in May. He qualified #1 with an 8.93/152.92 and set Low ET in the first round, with an 8.92/152 to beat Lamar Walden's Vega at 9.11. In the semifinals, he beat Roy Hill with another 8.93; in the final, an 8.97 got the victory when Kenny Hahn fouled against him. At National Trail for the NHRA Springnationals, he qualified #1 with a 9.06/150.25. A 9.15/149.00 got around Richie Zul's Camaro in the first round, but his 9.16/148.76 lost to Bobby Yowell in Billy Stepp's Dodge in round two. He won his third NHRA Division 2 race in a row when he beat Reid Whisnant in the final at Blaney. Booth's 9.00 (Low ET) at 149.00 beat Reid's 9.12/148. In mid-July, he was at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals. A 9.05/150.25 qualified #6 in the field. Booth beat Joe Satmary in round one with a 9.13/149.00. In round two, his 9.14/149.75 lost to Wayne Gapp's 9.10/140 in the "Gapp & Roush" four-door Maverick. The little Hornet continued to run stronger as the season progressed, and at the NHRA Grandnationals, he qualified #2 behind Gapp's 8.86 with an 8.940/150.75. He beat the other Hornet of Kanners in the first round with a 9.06/150.50. Another 9.06 in round two topped Tony Christopher's Duster, but in the semifinals, he fell off to a 9.09/149.00 that lost to Glidden's 8.90/153. The next big race was at Indianapolis for the NHRA US Nationals. Booth qualified #6 in the 32-car field with a 9.09, and he lasted until round three, where his 8.96/150.00 lost to Glidden's holeshot aided 8.99/153. He grabbed another Division 2 title when he won the final at Gainesville. Once again, he ran Whisnant in the final, and his 9.08/149.00 beat Reid's off-pace 9.35/147. Wally ran 8.94 at NHRA Sanair 74, 8.92 at Suffolk Dragway 74, 9.03 at Pomona, 9.05 at Englishtown, 9.06 at Columbus, 8.96 at Indy, and 9.03 at Ontario.Photo from the 1974 NHRA Gatornationals, Gainesville, Florida.

Notes: The Gapp and Roush team entered the '74 season with three cars. They had the seasoned Pinto from '73 along with a new one. Along with the Pintos, they had a Mustang II. The team was not sure how the 351 ran with the new NHRA weight break of 6.75 lbs per cubic inch, but Gapp mentioned in January that if the small cars were uncompetitive, he would build a four-door Maverick to take advantage of the 6.45 factor for cars with over a 105" wheelbase. Wayne started the season at Beeline in January for the AHRA Winternationals. He qualified #3 with an 8.92. In the first round, he beat Warren Johnson's Vega with a 9.06/149.02. An 8.94/152.02 took care of Dave Kanners' 9.03 in the AMC Hornet in round two. But in the semifinals, his 9.03/151.26 lost to fellow Pinto campaigner Bob Glidden's 8.94/153. At Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, Gapp qualified #2 with an 8.95/151.77. A first-round 8.920/151.77 beat Kelly Chadwick's Vega at 9.36. In round two, he ran 8.99/151.00 to easily cover Bill Bagshaw's 9.22/144. A semifinal 9.00/150.75 beat Scott Shafiroff's 9.22/144 to put the Pinto in the final. There he had to run Bill "Grumpy" Jenkins. It was a close race with Bill's Vega barely winning with an 8.93/152, just edging the Pinto's 8.94/152.02. Gapp and Roush brought two cars to the Gatornationals, with Wayne driving the Pinto and Jack driving their new Mustang II. They qualified #1 and second with Gapp's 8.99/152.54 getting the pole. Gapp advanced past the first-round with a 9.19 when Glidden lost a transmission. But the Pinto's engine was ailing, and the car couldn't make the call for the second round. Gapp won the IHRA Southern Nationals at Charlotte in April. It was an eighth-mile track, and Wayne qualified #2 with a 5.90. He ran a 6.02/116.42 in the first round, to beat Ronnie Sox's brother, David. In the semifinals, a 6.06/117.95 beat Sam Carroll's 6.16. In the final, he faced Roy Hill's Duster. Roy ran 6.05/117 but lost to Gapp's Low ET and Top Speed of the meet run of 5.80/123.11. Wayne was at Rockingham on May 12 for another IHRA race, the Pro-Am Nationals. He qualified #5 with a 9.12/150.00, but he failed to reach the finals. Ran IHRA records of 5.80/123.11 on the eighth-mile in winning the IHRA Southern Nationals at Charlotte in late March 1974. It was the Pinto that set the record (not the Mustang II). There is footage of the race on YouTube. Wayne began running the four-door Maverick at NHRA Columbus in June.

Notes: Won Summernatationals, defeating #1 and #2 qualifiers on holeshots. Lombardo was making his first national event appearance behind the wheel of Bill Jenkins' Vega at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals. He had trained to drive the car for two weeks prior to the race. His 9.04/152.02 qualified #5. In the opening round, his 9.07/150.75 defeated Scott Shafiroff's 9.17/148. He and low qualifier Bob Glidden had a close race in the second round that saw them both run 9.13. Lombardo got the "win" light. In the semifinal, Larry's 9.14 beat Dave Kanners' 9.30. He faced #2 qualifier Wayne Gapp in the final. Gapp had run quicker than Lombardo in all three of his races in reaching the final. But Larry strapped a holeshot on Gapp and held on. His 9.11/150.00 beat the Maverick's 9.02/151. At the NHRA Grandnationals, Larry's 8.96/152.54 qualified #3. In the first round, an easy 9.07/150.25 beat Jerry Miller, but in round two, his 9.05 lost to Paul Blevins' slower 9.15. Betcha the "Grump" had something to say to Larry after that one. The following week (August 11), they went to Martin, Michigan, for the PHR Championships. Lombardo's 8.93 qualified #2 behind Gapp's 8.89.

Ran 9.31 at Pomona, 9.28 at Columbus, and 9.17, 9.117/150.00 at Ontario. | Sonny attempted to qualify at the NHRA Winternationals, but his best of 9.32/145.39 failed to make the show. He was at Famoso on March 3 for the Bakersfield March Meet, where he qualified #2 with a 9.30, but he failed to reach the finals. He was finished runner-up at the AHRA Northern Nationals at Fremont on March 17. A final round 9.15/149 lost to Bill Bagshaw's 9.03/153. In June, he was at National Trail for the NHRA Springnationals, where he qualified #14 with a 9.28. The Camaro broke in the first round, giving opponent Scott Shafiroff a free ride into round two. He qualified #2 at the second NHRA Division 7 race held at Sacramento. Bryant made his way to the final, where he met Bagshaw. Sonny must have been a little tired as he took a nap on the line, and his Low ET and Top Speed run of 9.10/150.01 lost to Bill's 9.21/145. He was at Bonneville Raceway for the NHRA Division Seven final in August. Sonny reached the final against Kevin Rotty only to foul away a 9.60/141.51 (Top Speed), while Rotty picked up the win with a 9.58/141. The Ontario 9.117/150.00 numbers were his best NHRA national event times of the year.

Notes: The "other" AMC car. The '73 season ended positively for the Dick Maskin and Dave Kanners team. Kanners had made it into the semifinals at the NHRA Supernationals with their Hornet giving AMC its best outing in the Pro Stock class. The '74 season would see the team do very well at national events. NHRA refactored the cars to 6.45 lbs, which would also help as they shed a few pounds. It started at Beeline for the AHRA Winternationals, where Dave qualified #7 with a 9.09 in the sixteen-car field. A 9.06/148.76 in round one, beat Gordie Rivera. In round two, Kanners ran his best time of the weekend, a 9.03/149.25, but it wasn't enough to beat Wayne Gapp's 8.94/152. Things didn't go as well at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, where a 9.10/149.75 qualified in the dreaded #9 spot. That set up a first-round meeting with low qualifier Bob Glidden that saw Kanners' off pace 9.24/148.27 lose to Bob's 9.04/152. It was ironic that just before the NHRA Gatornationals, both the AMC teams of Wally Booth and the Maskin and Kanners team were released from their contracts. That all changed after the Gatornats as Booth took the win, giving AMC its first NHRA Pro Stock victory. Kanners also ran well there. He qualified #7 with a 9.07/150.75. In the first round, his 9.00/151.15 beat Bert Straus' 9.11/149. Unfortunately, the two AMC's paired up in the next round, and Booth's 9.01/152 beat Kanners' 9.05/150.75. He won over an eight-car field at Englishtown's Pro Stock Bonanza race in April. All cars were run at 6.50 lbs per cubic inch, so Dave actually had to add weight. In round one, his 9.15/148.76 beat Scott Shafiroff's 9.23/147. In the semifinal, he had a great race that saw his 8.96/151.26 beat Bill Jenkins' 9.03/148. He turned into a Vega killer in the final, as he beat his third one with an 8.95/150.50 that got the victory over Paul Blevins' 8.98/152. At the NHRA Springnationals, both AMC's qualified in the top four positions, with Booth getting the pole at 9.06/150 while Kanners qualified #4 with a 9.10/150.25. Dave fell off to 9.23/148.02 in the first round, but it was still enough to get around Kelly Chadwick's 9.31/144. But another 9.23 at 147.79 in round two lost to Joe Satmary's quick-leaving 9.30/147. He was at Maple Grove for the All-American Pro-Series Opener, where he beat Mark Harrington driving the MIMI Vega in the first round, with a 9.23. In the second round, he advanced when Glidden fouled, but the AMC dropped a valve on his run, and he was unable to run in the semifinals, so Dick Landy replaced him via the "break rule."Shortly after that (June 23), he was at Thunder Valley for the NHRA Division Five opener. He qualified #1 with a 9.16/148.27 (a new track record). in the opening round, his 9.24/149.50 (speed was also a new track record) defeated Jim Cooper. In the semifinal, his 9.21/148.27 beat Bill McDaniel's Pinto. He faced Kelly Chadwick in the final. Kelly was running two tenths off the AMC's pace, and it stayed that way in the final, where Dave ran 9.19/148.76 for the victory over Chadwick's 9.42/146. The following week (June 30), he reset the NHRA 1/8 mile record to 5.82 while winning the NHRA 1/8 Mile Drags at Indiana. There he qualified #1 at 5.92. He then ran 5.82 twice and set Top Speed at 120.00 before beating Preston Honea, who fouled against him in the final. The next NHRA national event was the Summernationals held at Englishtown in July. The two AMC cars qualified side by side, with Booth getting the #6 spot and Kanners qualifying #7 with a 9.05/150. A 9.23/148.02 beat Bert Straus' 9.38/147 in round one, and a second-round 9.31 beat John Lingenfelter's 9.39. But his 9.30 in the semifinal fell to eventual winner Larry Lombardo's 9.14 in Bill Jenkins' Vega. The NHRA Grandnationals did not go well for the team. Dave's 9.09 qualified #10, which set up a first-round meeting between the two Hornets. Dave's 9.17 in their race lost to Booth's 9.06. More bad luck interfered at the PHR Championships. Kanners qualified #7 in the sixteen-car field with a 9.06, but he broke against Bill Robertson in the opening round. Ran 9.10 at Pomona, 9.00 at Gainesville, 9.10 at Columbus, 9.06 at Englishtown, and 9.01 at Ontario.

Notes: Ken ran an 8.98 to qualify #5 at Beeline for the AHRA Winternationals. In the first round, a 9.08/152.02 beat Tim McNally's 10.25/128. A second round 9.10/152.54 lost to eventual winner Bob Glidden's 8.91/152. Ken then went to Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals where he again ran an 8.98 (152.02) in qualifying. That number was good for the #4 spot in the field. He slowed to a 9.31/148.02 in the first round, that lost to Scott Shafiroff's 9.18/150.
