Notes: Lee Shepherd and Bob Glidden waged war in Pro Stock unlike any had seen before in the class. Glidden started the season in his Arrow, in which he had won the NHRA Pro Stock championship the year before. It wasn't cutting it in 1980. Lee won the first two NHRA events of the season, with Glidden's best showing being a runner-up at the Gatornationals. Bob had Don Hardy build him a new Fairmont that debuted at Suffolk for a match race against Bill Jenkins. He had just delivered the Arrow to its new owner. Glidden was happy to be back in a Ford as he defeated Jenkins three straight with times of 8.35/158, 8.37/158, and 8.51/153. He then took it to Indianapolis for the NHRA Division Three opener. During qualifying, he reset the NHRA speed record to 162.16. The accompanying ET of 8.43 (Low ET) gave him the pole. In the first round, he ran 8.52/153.32 to beat Don Coonce's 8.74/153, and an 8.46/154.10 in the semi-final beat Jim Mikel's 8.85/153. In the final, he blasted out a 8.51/158.17 for the victory over Sam Gianino's off-pace 9.29/154. He was at Baton Rouge for the NHRA Cajun Nationals the following week. He qualified #1 with a Low ET of the meet 8.41 at 160.71 while Shepherd qualified #5 in the eight-car show with an 8.54, meaning that the two would meet in the first round. In that first-round match-up, Lee ran another 8.54/158 that beat Glidden's quicker 8.49/160.71. Lee went on to win his third straight national event. Bob had to get his act together quickly if he was to win another championship. On May 4, he won the second Division 3 race at Edgewater, setting Low ET and Top Speed while qualifying #1 with a 8.48/158.45. He beat Andy Mannarino in the final with an 8.50/153.32. He then made a move on Shepherd at the NHRA Springnationals. An 8.52/158.45 qualified #1, while Lee's 8.57 was second in the now big block Camaro. Bob set Low ET in the first round with an 8.49/157.61 single when Roy Hill broke on the line. He got another solo in round two went "Dyno Don's" Mustang broke on the line. Bob advanced with an 8.54. He then stopped Frank Iaconio's 8.60/156 in the semi-final with an 8.53/154. In the final, Bob got his first national event win of the year with an 8.53/155.70 stopping Shepherd's 8.62/155. He then went to Martin, Michigan, for the next NHRA Division Three race and won that as well, beating Joe Satmary in the final. Another win followed on June 28 at the NHRA Mile High Nationals. Bob qualified #1 with a Low ET of the Meet 8.99 (Bandimere's first eight), while the Reher-Morrison Camaro was second with a 9.02. Together they mowed down the competition to meet again in the final, where Bob ran another 8.99/149.50 to win over Shepherd's close 9.01/147. Going into the Summernationals, Bob was 3,000 points behind Shepherd. In qualifying, Glidden looked good, running an 8.41/159.29 for the #1 spot. Lee was second with an 8.48/159. Once again, they ran through the field to meet in the final. Bob ran a best of 8.48/159.85 in eliminations while Lee's best was an 8.50/162. In the final, Shepherd ran an 8.54/158 that beat Bob's 8.53/159.29. Glidden won the NHRA Division 3 race at Union Grove and set Low ET and Top Speed. He qualified #1 at the PHR Championships with an 8.59 while his nemesis ran an 8.67 for third. Both got past the first-round with Glidden setting Low ET at 8.52 in beating Paul Gentilozzi. Gidden and Shepherd met with the Camaro breaking at half-track in the semifinals and Bob winning with an 8.53/158.17. Bob went on to win the event with a final round 8.58 over Jim Kinnett. The NHRA tour traveled up to Canada for the Grandnationals where an 8.47/159.29 (Top Speed) by Glidden was good for #2 in qualifying as Shepherd got the pole. Once again, the two raced through the field to meet in the final for the fifth time this year. Unfortunately, Bob's line lock was faulty so he rushed through his burnout. In a rush, he left the Lenco in third gear so when the light turned green, the car just bogged off the line. He could only watch as Lee ran an 8.44/159 for his fifth win of the year. Bob also won the final NHRA Division Three race held at Beech Bend near the middle of August. That made it a clean sweep as he won all the Division three races. At the last event, he qualified #1, got the "odd-lot" solo in the first round and ran 8.58/157.61. He then beat Coonce's 8.75/153 in the semi-final with a 8.55/157.61. He faced Andy Mannarino in the final and Andy's 8.74/155 finished runner-up to Glidden's 8.54/160.42 (Low ET, Top Speed, and new track records). Bob was kicking himself after Indy for the US Nationals. He qualified #1 with Low ET and Top Speed at 8.43/161.29. Both he and the second qualifier (8.45) worked their way to the final. Bob was running much quicker than Shepherd during eliminations. His 8.48/161.00 in the opening round beat Alban Gauthier's 8.85/156. A round two 8.51/158.87 took out Dempsey Hardy's 8.76/154 and in the semi-final, he ran 8.46/160.71 to defeat Iaconio's 8.53/160. By comparison, Lee ran 8.54 in his semi-final race. It looked as though Bob had the edge, but he fouled away an 8.48/154 while Lee got his sixth win with an 8.50/159. Bob was now 426 markers behind Shepherd. Glidden had to do something fast and he did at the next event, the NHRA Fallnationals at Seattle. He showed up with a new destroked Cleveland of 327 cubic inches. He qualified #1 with an 8.35/159.85 while Shepherd was unusually farther back with an 8.52/157 qualifying #4. Glidden set an 8.324 national record in the semifinal while Lee stayed in the game with an 8.44/158 beating Iaconio and putting the two in yet another final round. This time, Glidden took his fourth NHRA national event win of the year and 30th overall, with an 8.41/159.85 beating Lee's 8.51/158. This tightened up the points chase considerably, but Bob was still a long shot going into the season finale. At the Ontario World Finals, Shepherd and Glidden qualified #1 and #2 at 8.433/159.17 and 8.465/158.17, respectively. Both won in round one, but Shepherd had troubles and slowed to a 16-second shutoff in round two, sending Andy Mannarino on to the third round. Glidden marched through the field and beat Frank Iaconio in the final. His 8.428/159.85 defeated Frank's 8.55/159, set Low ET and Top Speed of the Meet, and claimed Bob the 1980 NHRA Pro Stock championship. |

Notes: Dominated 1980 with 6 wins and 3 runner-ups. Lost the very close championship due to a broken transmission at the World Finals. Ran 8.35/163.45 at Amarillo WCS. Was that altitude factored? Confirmed 160.42 at Englishtown 80. We need to confirm the best sea-level times. | Lee started the '80 season by competing at the AHRA Winternationals. He qualified #1 in the eight-car show and went on to win, beating Don Nicholson in the final. At Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, Lee qualified #4 with an 8.52/156.24. He beat Jim Meyer in round one, and in round two, his 8.59/155.97 took out Lee Hunter's Zephyr. In the semifinals, his 8.61 advanced when Bob Glidden's Arrow broke at mid-track. His final-round opponent was to be Kevin Rotty, but Rotty's Camaro broke, so Shepherd soloed to his second NHRA National event Pro Stock win with a 14.38. Baton Rouge hosted the NHRA Division 4 Opener on March 9. Once again, the two Camaros of Rotty and Shepherd met in the final. This time Kevin's didn't break. Lee got the win with an 8.60/155.97 over Rotty's 8.63/154. At the NHRA Gatornationals, he qualified #2 with an 8.49/157.34. He beat Gordie Rivera in round one, and in round two, he beat Frank Iaconio. An 8.50 in the semifinals shut down Joe Satmary's 8.75. In the final, he faced Glidden and his Arrow. Both ran 8.51 (Lee at 156.52), with Shepherd getting the victory. The second Division 4 race was at Green Valley on March 30, and Shepherd set an 8.37 NHRA record in qualifying #1. His speed on the run was 161.57 (Top Speed). Once again, the final came down to the two Camaros of Rotty and Shepherd, and once again, the results were the same, with Lee's 8.42/156.52 beating Kevin's 8.58/157. The Reher-Morrison team continued to dominate Division 4 when they showed up at Houston for the third race. Lee ran 8.61 (Low ET) at 154.37 to qualify first and then went on to win with an 8.74/155.97 that beat Sonny Ray's 8.85/152. Things didn't seem to be going so good for the team when they showed up at Baton Rouge for the NHRA Cajun Nationals. It was an eight-car show, and when qualifying ended, Lee's best of 8.54/158.17 got the #5 spot. That put him up against low qualifier Glidden who had just switched to a Fairmont and set a track record 8.41. Lee was off by a tenth and a half, but he cut a good light in their first-round race, and his 8.54/158.73 beat Bob's quicker 8.49/160. In the semifinals, his 8.56/158.17 beat Rotty's 8.57/159. That set up a final round against Frank Iaconio. Frank had lane choice due to an 8.47 in his semifinal race. Once again, Shepherd proved he could drive as his 8.60/159.01 got the win over Iaconio's 8.55/145. This was his third straight NHRA National event victory. |

Notes: Andy was at Edgewater on May 4 for the second NHRA Division 3 race. He qualified #2 with an 8.62 behind Bob Glidden's 8.48. These two would work their way through the field to meet in the final. Glidden had the edge and held it with an 8.50/153, beating Mannarino's runner-up effort of 8.71/152.80. He failed to qualify at the NHRA Springnationals, where he was the fourth alternate with an 8.87/154.90. But as the season progressed, the team got stronger. At the NHRA Summernationals, Andy qualified #7 with an 8.60/155.97. An 8.69/154.10 beat Don Nicholson's 8.87/152 in round one, but in round two, his 8.67/156.52 lost to Frank Iaconio's 8.56/157. He was at Maple Grove in August at the NHRA Division 1 race. There he lasted until the semifinals, where an 8.73/153.58 lost to eventual winner Iaconio's 8.57/156. He followed the NHRA tour into Canada for the Grandnationals. It was an eight-car field, and his 8.66/154.90 qualified #6. The race was then rained out after qualifying, and Mannarino packed up and left for the PHR Meet at Martin, Michigan. Andy qualified #2 there with an 8.61 and another 8.61/155.17 in the first round, beat Joe Satmary. He was caught napping on the line in the semifinals, and his 8.65 lost to Jim Kinnett's 8.74. The following week (August 17), he was at Beech Bend for the NHRA Division 3 race. A first-round 8.72/157.61 advanced over a fouling Larry Peternel, and in the semifinals, his 8.67/158.73 beat Jim Mikel's 8.93/154 in the "Hop Cap" Monza. This put him into another final with Glidden. Unfortunately for Andy, the results were the same, with Bob's 8.54/160 getting the win over the Firebird's 8.74/155.70. The car really improved at Indy for the NHRA US Nationals. Andy ran 8.53/157.34 to qualify #4. In the first round, his 8.53/157.61 beat Johnny Dowey's 8.69/153. But in round two, a sleepy 8.52/157.34 lost to Bill Jenkins' 8.65/155. The Maskin and Mannarino team continued to improve at Seattle, where Andy qualified #3 with an 8.45/157.34. An even better 8.44/157 beat Satmary's 8.55 in round one. The car stayed consistent with an 8.46/158.17 in round two that downed Gordie Rivera's 8.59/155. He came up against Glidden in the semifinals, and Glidden had been running 8.3s. Andy took a chance on the tree and fouled away an 8.440/158.45, which were Andy's best NHRA national event times. He had to do it as Bob won with an 8.32/160. He got some payback at Fremont's Winston Challenge race, where he actually beat Glidden in the final. |

Notes: Runner-up at the 1980 Winternationals, setting a new record. Photo from 1980 US Nationals. Kevin finished 4th in NHRA points in 1980, his best finish. Unfortunately, Kevin did not race in 1981 and did not get to show the big number 4 on his car. | Kevin had his best year in Pro Stock in '80. He started the year at the AHRA Winternationals, where he qualified #3 and lasted until the semifinals, where he lost to eventual winner Lee Shepherd. At Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, he qualified #1 with Low ET and Top Speed 8.492/161.57 (new NHRA speed record). Kevin beat a fouling Bill Jenkins in the first round, with an 8.62/157.34, and in the second round, Randy Humphrey also fouled against him. Rotty must have had everyone scared because, in the semifinals, Frank Iaconio was the third straight driver to foul against him. He met up with Lee Shepherd in the final, and unfortunately for Kevin, his Camaro broke a frame mount, giving Shepherd a solo for the victory. He was going to race at Famoso for the Bakersfield March Meet, but it was rain-delayed, and he was unable to make the rain date. He continued to impress by qualifying #5 at the NHRA Gatornationals at 8.490/161.00. He beat Don Nicholson in the first round, before losing to Bob Glidden in round two. At the NHRA Division 4 Opener at Baton Rouge, Kevin made it all the way to the final before losing to Shepherd's 8.60/155 with an 8.63/154.73. He won the Divisional race at Beeline, stopping a fouling Gordie Rivera in the final with an 8.87. Another runner-up finish to Shepherd came at the second NHRA Division 4 race at Green Valley. An 8.58/157.61 was no match for Lee's 8.42/156 on this day. In April, he was at Fremont for the NHRA Division 6 race. Rotty qualified #5 in the eight-car field with an 8.58/157. He lost to low qualifier Brad Yuill in the first round. He was back at Baton Rouge for the NHRA Cajun Nationals on April 27. An 8.49/161.00 qualified third in the eight-car show. A first-round 8.54/158.17 beat Sonny Ray, but he came up against Shepherd in the semifinals, and his 8.57/159.57 lost to Lee's 8.54/158. It didn't seem to matter which Division he raced in; he was tough. In May, Kevin was at OCIR for the third NHRA Division 6 race. It was another eight-car field, and his 8.50/158.17 qualified #1. He went on to win by beating Larry Johnson in the first round, with an 8.55/157.06 and an 8.53/157.61 beat Ken Dondero in Dick Landy's Omni in the semifinals. Rotty took all the awards in the final when he beat Brad Yuill with Low ET and Top Speed at 8.48/158.73. He slipped a bit in qualifying for the NHRA Springnationals when his 8.73/155.44 got the #8 spot in the field. In the first two rounds, he got around Don Coonce and Jim Kinnett before losing to Shepherd's 8.58 in the semifinals with an 8.70. Did Kevin run 8.43 somewhere this year? His NHRA national event bests were the 8.490 at Gainesville and 161.57 at the Winternationals. |

Notes: Also 8.47/159 at 1980 Cajuns. If it weren't for Bob Glidden and Lee Shepherd's dominant performance, Frank would have easily been the 1980 Pro Stock World Champion. He still ran really well but was just a tick behind the performances of those two. He started the NHRA tour by qualifying third with an 8.51/161.57 at the Winternationals and lasted until the semifinals, where he fouled against Kevin Rotty. Frank ran well at the Gatornationals, where he qualified #6. He beat Lee Edwards in the first round, with an 8.52, but he fouled against Shepherd. He stopped off at Capitol Raceway for the Spring Pro Stock Championships. Fourteen cars were attempting to qualify for the eight-car field. Frank set Low ET and Top Speed in qualifying #1 with an 8.54/161.00. A first-round 8.57/159.81 beat Jim Cook's 8.89. Another 8.54 at 157.98 beat Larry Lombardo in the semifinals. He was to face Carlton Phillips in the final, but it was rained out. The next NHRA national event was the Cajun Nationals on April 27. It was only an eight-car show, and Iaconio qualified #2 with an 8.46/161.21. (Top Speed). An opening round 8.50/157.61 beat Jim Kinnett's 8.67/157. In the semifinal, he stopped Bill Jenkins with an 8.47/159. In the final, he met Shepherd. A quicker run of 8.55/145.86 lost to Lee's 8.60/159. He won the Division 1 Opener at Englishtown on May 4. Frank qualified #1 with an 8.55/158.73 and then ran 8.58/157.34 to beat Bob Ingles' 8.75/155. He set Low ET and Top Speed in the semifinals with an 8.51/158.73 over "Dyno Don" Nicholson's 8.73/155. A final round 8.53/153.45 beat Jenkins' 8.73/157. He then went to Richmond for an eight-car show. Ingles' 8.73 fell to Frank's 8.55 in the first round, but in the semifinals, his Camaro broke and slowed to 9.01 against eventual winner Lombardo's 8.64. Frank qualified #3 with an 8.63/156.79 at the NHRA Springnationals. He beat Brad Yuill and Jenkins in the first two rounds before losing to Glidden's 8.53/154 in the semifinals with an 8.60/156.52. I'm not sure if he failed to qualify or just skipped running the Mile High Nationals, but he wasn't in the field. At Englishtown for the Summernationals, he qualified #3 again, behind those "other two guys" with an 8.52/157.61. He beat Johnny Downey with an 8.56/157.69, and in the second round, another 8.56/157.89 beat Andy Mannarino. In the semi's, Glidden ran an 8.50/158 to trailer the Camaro's 8.60/157.06. Frank won the Division 1 race at Maple Grove, setting Low ET at 8.57 and beating Jenkins again in the final with an 8.58/156.52, dropping the "Grump's" 8.77/153. Jenkins returned the favor at the Division 1 race at Maryland, where Bill beat Frank in the final. The NHRA tour traveled up to Canada for the Grandnationals, where an 8.59/157.06 qualified #3 in the eight-car show. He beat Alban Gauthier in the first round, with an 8.63/156.52, but a semifinal run of 8.60/157.61 failed to win against Shepherd's 8.41/158. At the Division 1 final at New England on August 17, he set Low ET and Top Speed at 8.53/157.61 in qualifying #1. A first-round 8.60/157.61 advanced when Jenkins fouled. In the semifinals, his 8.57/157.06 beat Doug Noblet. A final round 8.58/157.61 beat Ingles' 8.79/150. He took his customary third spot in qualifying with an 8.52/160.71 at the US Nationals. Again he ran well until he met up with Glidden in the semifinal, and a good 8.53/160.42 lost to Bob's 8.46/160. At Seattle for the Fallnationals, Lee didn't run as well as he normally did, and as a result, Frank's 8.45/159.01 qualified #2 behind Glidden's 8.35. Frank worked his way through the field until he met up with Shepherd in the semifinal and fouled out, giving Lee a free ride into the final. At the World Finals, he was back in #3 in qualifying with an 8.56/159.01, but this time, he made it into the final against Glidden. A final round 8.56/159.29, lost to a championship-hungry Glidden who won with an 8.42/159.85. |

Notes: The last car SRD built for Jenkins. Bill returned to driving after a three-year layoff. Confirmed 8.51/158 at Gainesville 3/80. Bill started his '80 season by qualifying #9 at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals with an 8.63/157.06. That set up a first-round meeting with low qualifier Kevin Rotty. Jenkins gambled on the tree and lost, fouling away an 8.65/156.52, while Rotty advanced with an 8.62/157. At the NHRA Gatornationals, he qualified #3 with an impressive 8.51 behind Bob Glidden and Lee Shepherd. Unfortunately, he lost to Don Coonce in the first round. He ran 8.60/157.61 to qualify on the "bump" for the NHRA Cajun Nationals at Baton Rouge. It was a tough eight-car show. He picked up slightly to an 8.59/156.79 in the first round, to beat Larry Johnson's late 8.58/157. In the semifinals, he had problems and shut off to 8.82/139.53 in a loss to Frank Iaconio's 8.47/159. On May 4th, he was at Englishtown for the NHRA Division 1 Opener. There, his 8.61/155.97 qualified #2 behind Iaconio's 8.55. These two would work their way to the final. Jenkins' 9.00/153.32 in the first round, beat Don Campanello's Arrow, while an 8.83/155.44 in the semifinals beat former driver Larry Lombardo's quicker 8.72/155. Facing Iaconio in the final was gonna be tough as Frank had run 8.58 and 8.51. Sure enough, Bill ran his best of eliminations at 8.73/157.06, but it was good for the runner-up spot as Frank took the victory with an 8.53/153. At Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals, Bill qualified #7 with an 8.73/153.84. He beat Morris Johnson's Vega in the first round, before losing to Iaconio in round two. He won the NHRA Division 1 race at Maryland International, stopping Iaconio in the final. Englishtown was the next stop on the NHRA circuit for the Summernationals. Jenkins qualified #8 with an 8.65/155.17. He ran 8.68/155.97 in the first round, over Coonce, but an 8.67/156.25 in round two could not beat his opponent's 8.64/157. He then went to Maryland International for the US Pro Stock Open, where he finished runner-up to Shepherd at the eight-car show. Another runner-up finish came at Maple Grove for the NHRA Division 1 race. His 8.77/153.58 in the final lost to Iaconio's 8.58/156. He was in Canada for the NHRA Grandnationals on August 9th. It was an eight-car field, and Bill's 8.74/154.63 qualified on the "bump." The race was postponed by rain, and Bill didn't return. His next stop was at Martin, Michigan, for the PHR Championships. An 8.72 qualified #7. He lost to Jim Kinnett's Volare in the first round. The NHRA Division 1 final was held at New England on August 17. Jenkins qualified #5 for the show with an 8.74/154.37. That set up a first-round meeting with low qualifier Iaconio, who Bill had been having a tough time getting around. Bill took a shot and fouled, slowing to 9.01 while Frank advanced with an 8.60/157. Things went well at Indianapolis for the NHRA US Nationals. Bill ran 8.62/155.44 to qualify #8. A first-round 8.68/155.17 beat Roy Hill's 8.74/158, and in round two, he showed he could still drive as his holeshot-aided 8.65/155.17 beat Andy Mannarino's quicker 8.52/157. Bill's fun came to an end in the semifinals, where eventual winner Shepherd ran 8.54/158 to beat his 8.61/155.44. |

Notes: Randy qualified #5 at the NHRA Winternationals with an 8.55/157.34. He lasted until the second round when he fouled against Kevin Rotty. A big win came at the Bakersfield March Meet, where he set Low ET at 8.54 at 154.63 in the final while beating Roy Hill's 8.72/156. At the NHRA Gatornationals, he qualified #4 and beat Alban Gauthier in the first round, before losing to Joe Satmary in round two. He was at Fremont for the NHRA Division 6 Opener in April, where although he failed to reach the finals, he did qualify #2 with an 8.50/157. At the second Division 6 race at Seattle, he beat Tom Chase in the first round, with an 8.67/154.10. An 8.72/154.37 beat Gary Hansen in the semifinals and moved him into the final against Larry Johnson. The two had a good race, but Humphrey's 8.71/153.58 finished runner-up to Johnson's 8.69/154. The next Division 6 race was at OCIR on May 17. Randy's 8.66/155.44 qualified #6. In the first round, he had problems and shut down to 9.96 in a loss to Brad Yuill's 8.61/157. |

Notes: This was a small block wedge head engine. | Brad was driving for Dick Landy at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, where he ran 8.61/158.17 to qualify #7. He lost to Tom Chelbana in the first round, via a monumental holeshot, 8.75 to 8.62. At the Bakersfield March Meet, he qualified with an 8.58, but he fouled against Sonny Bryant in the first round. He was at Fremont for the NHRA Division 6 race in April. He qualified #1 with an 8.50/159.87 (Low ET and Top Speed) and made his way to the final, where he beat his brother Mark for the title. Brad qualified #1 at the second NHRA Division 6 race at Seattle with an 8.52/159.57 (Low ET and Top Speed), but he fouled against Gary Pugh in the first round. At the third NHRA Division 6 race at OCIR, Brad qualified #2 with an 8.57/157.34 behind Kevin Rotty's 8.50. He advanced to the final with runs of 8.61/157.34 and 8.54/158.17 to meet up with Rotty in the final. Brad was a little slower than Rotty in eliminations, and he attempted to compensate, but he pushed the 'tree a little too hard and fouled away an 8.70/154.90 while Kevin got the victory with an 8.48/158. Brad was in the family Camaro at Indy and Ontario. Formerly listed 8.425/161.57. Removing those times until we get confirmation. |

Larry finished 6th in NHRA points in 1980, his best year. | Larry qualified #5 at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals with an 8.60/156.24. Unfortunately, he lost to Gordie Rivera in the first round. At the Gatornationals, he qualified #9, a very unlucky spot as he faced low qualifier Bob Glidden in the opening round and lost. He made a stop at Warner Robins for the Division Two opener and cleaned the house. He ran 157.34 for Top Speed, set a new track record 8.58. In the final, he faced off against Roy Hill, and Hill must have known the advantage Johnson's Camaro had over his Horizon in performance as he fouled and Larry got the victory with an 8.60/156.79. The next NHRA National event was the Cajun Nationals at Baton Rouge. It was just an eight-car field, but Larry showed that he had what it takes to qualify. A strong 8.52 at only 152.28 qualified #4, but in round one, he was a little late of the line, and Bill Jenkins' 8.59/156 beat his 8.58/157.34. His disappointment didn't last long as a week later, he won the Division Six race at Seattle. An opening round 8.64/154.63 had beaten Terry Sherrill's 8.86/150, and in the semifinals, he soloed with an 8.92/120 when Gary Pugh's Monza broke. He faced the Mopar of Randy Humphrey in the final, and Larry's 8.69/154.90 grabbed the win over Randy's close 8.71/153. Two weeks later, he was at OCIR for the next Division Six race. He qualified #5 with an 8.65/155.44, but low qualifier, and eventual winner Kevin Rotty, beat his 8.69/155.97 in the first round, with an 8.55/157. Larry did not attend the Springnationals at Columbus, but he did run at the Mile High Nationals at Denver. The car broke in its first-round race against Rotty. He qualified in the top half(#6)of the field at Englishtown for the Summernationals with an 8.58/157.06 and another 8.58 at 155.70 beat Don Campanello's 8.85/154 in the opening frame. But in round two, Lee Shepherd's 8.50/162 put Johnson's 8.59/157.34 on the trailer. He qualified #1 with an 8.71 at Blaney Drag Strip for the Division Two final, but he failed to reach the finals. He also lost early at Bonneville for the Division Five race. Larry set a 9.07 track record in qualifying #1, but a sleepy 9.16/147.55 in the first round, lost to Russell Pierson's 9.21/147. He recouped with a win at the next Division Five race held at Brainerd. An 8.70/154.10 stopped Bill Prince's 9.07/149, and a semifinal 8.81/153.32 advanced when Pierson fouled. In the final, he faced John Hagen, and Larry's 8.68/155.17 held on for the victory over Hagen's 8.70/154. He did not race in Canada for the Grandnationals. |

Notes: Animal Jim's legendary Mercury Zephyr Pro Stock was built by Chassis Craft (Greg Kaplin & Woody Mays) in 1979. This was the car that made Animal Jim a major match race star. From 1979 to 1990, it ran in every sanction, circuit, and mode possible. Pictured above is Animal Jim and "Zeke" at the 1980 AHRA Nationals at St. Louis International Raceway (now Gateway International Raceway) where he was the #1 qualifier. A week later he won Pro Stock at Cordova Dragway (Illinois) when he beat Jerry Haas in the final. Jim ran normally-aspirated Cleveland small blocks in 1979 and 80. |

Notes: Eldon Doman built this car new. Don Hardy did most of the chassis. Cleveland power by Doman. 4-speed Lenco. Family still owns the car. It is as it last ran in 1980, unrestored. Still fires right up and sounds as awesome as ever. It qualified every race it entered. - Stephen Doman |

Notes: Terry attempted to qualify at the NHRA Winters (DNQ but no times available). He was in Seattle on May 4 for the second NHRA Division Six race. In the opening round, his 8.86/150.50 fell to Larry Johnson's 8.64/154. Terry also ran 8.910/151.00 (first alternate) at Seattle. He was the third alternate at the NHRA World Finals at 8.804/155.97 (third alternate). Sherrill had his Camaro delivered to him from Alston Engineering in June. He paid about $10,000 for it, but after having the interior tin and the body detailing done, he was up to around $14,000 without a powertrain. Terry ran a destroked big block of 396 cubic inches to fit the NHRA factoring rules of the day. He ran it for two years before selling it in the spring of '83 for $14,200. Sherrill said, "That was probably the best car I've ever had." We need to confirm the 8.55/156.79 numbers. Did those occur at an NHRA Division 6 or AHRA event? |

Notes: New Don Hardy car was built to be Bob Glidden's. | At the second NHRA Division 2 race at DeSoto Memorial in April, Kinnett won the event and set Low ET and Top Speed at 8.65/157.34. It was a short field as only five cars qualified for the available eight spots. Jim ran his 8.65/157 in the first round, while beating Buddy Shanklin. In the semifinals, he got the "odd-lot" single and ran another 8.65 at 156.79. In the final, he beat Morris Johnson's 8.99/151 with an 8.78/153.06. At the NHRA Cajun Nationals, Jim qualified #6 in the eight-car field with an 8.58/158.73. An 8.67/157.34 in the first round, lost to Frank Iaconio's 8.50/157. Best NHRA national event times were Englishtown at 8.560 and Baton Rouge at 158.73. |

Notes: Yuill was driving this car at the OCIR Super Bowl in January. He ran a great 8.59/155.97. Mark was a first alternate DNQ at the Winternationals but had run his best speed of the year, 8.740/159.01. He qualified #7 at Gainesville with his best ET of the year, 8.570/156.79. Brad went to the finals there, taking the runner-up spot to Bob Glidden. Those were Mark’s only two NHRA national events of 1980. |

Notes: The team started the NHRA season at Gainesville but was the first alternate at 8.74/154.37. Sonny was at Baton Rouge in April for the NHRA Cajun Nationals. He qualified #7 in the eight-car field with an 8.588 (no speed reported). That was impressive as he out-qualified Bill Jenkins and non-qualifiers "Dyno Don" Nicholson and Joe Satmary. Unfortunately, his ailing 9.49/103.32 in the opening round lost to Kevin Rotty's 8.54/158. On May 18, he was at Amarillo for the NHRA Division Four race. He reached the final, where his 8.95/152.67 finished runner-up to Lee Shepherd's 8.83/155. At Columbus, for the NHRA Springnationals, his 8.83/155.17 qualified #14. In the first round, his 8.70/154.37 lost to Ronnie Sox's 8.75/155.44 holeshot (need to confirm that we don't have those times swapped - that's what the NHRA sheets say). Car was former Sox & Martin machine. That was the team's last NHRA national event of the year. |

Notes: Paul qualified #10 at the NHRA Summernationals at Englishtown with an 8.702/151.00. He improved to an 8.601/156.25 in the first round, but it wasn't enough to overcome eventual winner Lee Shepherd's 8.58/159. He failed to qualify at the NHRA Grandnationals in Canada, where his 8.820/150.50 best was good for the third alternate. A week later (August 10), he was at Martin, Michigan's US 131, for the PHR Championships. Paul qualified #5 in the eight-car show with an 8.71. Unfortunately, that set up a first-round match with low qualifier Bob Glidden. Bob won their race and went on to win the event. He failed to qualify at Indy for the NHRA US Nationals. NHRA racer; had a small block, not a hemi. |

Notes: Don qualified #11 at the NHRA Gatornationals at 8.615/155.97. In the first round, he got around Bill Jenkins (8.71/152 to 8.85/152) before losing to Mark Yuill in round two, 8.65/156 to 8.70/153. The qualifying times there were his best times of the year. Don was at the NHRA Division 3 Opener at Indianapolis, where he qualified #5 in the eight-car field with an 8.78/155.97. His 8.74/153.32 lost to low qualifier and eventual winner Bob Glidden's 8.52/153 in the first round. At the second NHRA Division 4 race at Edgewater on May 4th, Coonce ran 8.72 to qualify #3. He failed to make it into the finals there while Glidden won again. In June, he went to Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals, where his 8.844/152.03 sat on the "bump" for the sixteen car field. He lost to Kevin Rotty in the first round. In July, he went to Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals, where he qualified on the "bump" for the sixteen-car field with an 8.71/153.84. In the first round, his 8.81/152.02 beat Dempsey Hardy whose Monza broke and slowed to 12.93. But in the semi-final, his 8.75/153.06 fell to Glidden's 8.55/157. Coonce qualified #15 at Indy for the NHRA U.S. Nationals with an 8.71/154.63. His 8.80/150.75 in round one was no match for Joe Satmary's 8.66/156. |

Notes: Brad attempted to qualify at Indianapolis for the NHRA US Nationals, but his best of 8.728/155.7 was good for the second alternate spot. The following week (September 7), he was at Jackson County Sports Park for an NHRA Divisional race. It was an eight-car field and his 8.82 best failed to qualify. The next stop was at Seattle for the NHRA Fallnationals, Brad ran 8.621/156.52 to qualify #12. In the first round, he got a little out of shape and crossed the centerline, losing to Lee Shepherd. At the season ending NHRA World Finals, Yuill qualified #10 with an 8.660/157.34. He lost to Bob Glidden in round one, 8.52 to 8.77. Formerly listed 8.545. Removing that time until we get confirmation. |

Notes: Went back to the Mustang II in 1980. | Don qualified #2 at the AHRA Winternationals behind Lee Shepherd and the two finished that way, with Shepherd beating Nicholson in the final. At Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, "Dyno's" best of 8.75/155.44 (second alternate) failed to qualify. He made the show at the NHRA Gatornationals, qualifying #13, but he lost to Kevin Rotty in the first round. In April, he was at Baton Rouge for the NHRA Cajun Nationals. Don ran a best of 8.64 in qualifying which was first alternate in the eight-car show. On May 4, he was at Englishtown for the NHRA Division 1 Opener. He qualified #3 in the eight-car field with an 8.66/155.17. In round one, an 8.65/155.44 beat Morris Johnson, but in the semifinals, his 8.73/155.44 lost to Frank Iaconio's 8.51/158 (Low ET & Top Speed). At the NHRA Springnationals, his 8.82/153.84 qualified #13 and in round one, he beat Alban Gauthier. In the second round, his Mustang II broke on the line advancing eventual winner Bob Glidden. |

Notes: Alban qualified #12 at the NHRA Gatornationals, but in the first round, he lost to Randy Humphrey. At the NHRA Springnationals, an 8.72/157.34 qualified #5 in the field, but he lost to Don Nicholson in the first round. He continued to qualify well when he showed up at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals, hitting 8.65/158.73 to qualify #9. Unfortunately, by qualifying #9 that set up a first-round meeting with low qualifier Bob Glidden. Gauthier ran a strong 8.67/157.61, but it wasn't enough as Glidden moved on with an 8.51/158. |
