Notes: In August, Anderson attempted to qualify for the NHRA Grandnationals, but his 8.980/151.77 best failed to make the eight-car field (fourth alternate). Shortly after that (August 17), he was in New England for the NHRA Division One final. His 8.81/152.02 qualified #6. In the opening round of eliminations, his ailing 9.35 fell to Ronnie Manchester's 8.71.

Notes: 339 W-2 Wedge Small block, not a hemi. Set national ET record at 8.48 at Gainesville, then reset it at Fremont at 8.43. Tested 342 Ted Spehar engine. | Bob parked his championship-winning Fairmont and went to Chrysler for '79. Racers thinking it would take him some time to adjust to the new combination, were not too happy after qualifying ended at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. There at the top of the ladder, was Glidden's 8.56/159.57 (Top Speed). An 8.59 at only 147.05 beat Brad Yuill's 8.83/154 in the first round. He picked up to an 8.50 at only 144.69 to beat Larry Lombardo's 8.70/156 in Bill Jenkins' Camaro in round two. His speed continued to drop as in the semifinal; Bob ran 8.58 at 140.84 to drop Don Nicholson's 8.83/156. That put him in the final against Joe Satmary. Bob lost a freeze plug and had to drive through his own water, and still set an 8.49 track record at a paltry 150.75 to beat Joe's 8.71. At the NHRA Gatornationals, it was more of the same for the other Pro Stock drivers. Bob qualified #1 at 8.52/159.57 (Top Speed). A first-round 8.58 beat Nicholson, while his 8.55/149 advanced when Satmary fouled in round two. In the semifinals, he set Low ET with an 8.48/150 over Mark Yuill. It was good to see long-time Pro Stock campaigner Ronnie Sox up for the challenge in the final. Sox was also running a 340 based Mopar car, and this was the first all Mopar NHRA final in six years. But it was apparent that his hasn't as stout as Glidden's as in the final, Bob grabbed the victory with an 8.53/147.29 as Sox fouled with an 8.75/156 attempt. Things didn't change when the teams pulled into Baton Rouge for the NHRA Cajun Nationals. Once again, Glidden headed the Pro Stock qualifiers with an 8.54/158.45 (Low ET and Top Speed). It was an eight-car show, and Bob breezed past the first-round with an 8.59 when Jim Kinnett fouled. In the semifinals, his 8.61/151 beat Randy Humphrey's 8.66. In the final, he ran Lee Shepherd. The two left together, but soon Bob took control, and his 8.59/149 beat Lee's 8.71/155. At the NHRA Springnationals, there was some hope for the other Pro Stock racers when Bob didn't quite win all the accolades. Sure he set Low ET, was first in qualifying, and won the race, but someone else got Top Speed (Larry Lombardo at 159.85). His 8.57 (Low ET) was tops in qualifying, and he ran 8.69, 8.66, and 8.66 over Satmary, Shepherd, and Frank Iaconio to reach the final against Lombardo. A final round 8.61/157.61 copped the victory over Larry's 8.76/151. Bob was now undefeated for a full year in NHRA National event competition. He finally lost at the next NHRA event, the Mile High Nationals. He had set Low ET and Top Speed in qualifying #1 with a 9.08/148.27. In the first round, a 9.12/141.73 beat Nicholson, but he fouled against Randy Humphrey in the semifinals. He made it one round further at the NHRA Summernationals at Englishtown. He qualified #1 with an 8.52, then set Low ET and Top Speed at 8.51/160.14 on his way to a final-round meeting with Iaconio. Bob's Arrow broke in the final, and Frank got the victory with an 8.60/156. He got back to his winning ways at the NHRA Grandnationals in Canada. Glidden qualified #1 in the eight-car field with an 8.49/158.17 (Top Speed). He beat Mark Yuill in round one, and in the semifinals, he set Low ET at 8.46 over Nicholson, who fouled. In the final, he met Iaconio again, and this time the little Arrow didn't break. Bob ran 8.47 to take the win over Frank's 8.53. In August, Byron held an interesting best of three match race between Nicholson's Mustang and Glidden's Arrow. They were said to be legal weight, but the times were pretty quick. Dyno beat Bob three straight with a best of 8.34, while Glidden's three runs were 8.46, an 8.36 with a red light, and an 8.37. At Indy for the NHRA US Nationals, Bob was running some special carburetors from Holley. Once again, he qualified #1 with an 8.58. Another 8.58 at 157.34 beat Kinnett in round one. He set Low ET in round two with an 8.56/157.61 that took out Andy Mannarino. In the semifinals, another 8.58/156.79 beat Kevin Rotty's 8.71/157. In the final, he faced off against Lombardo in Bill Jenkins Camaro. Bob grabbed the victory with an 8.61/143.50 over Larry's 8.72/154.

Notes: Nicholson ran this Mustang after he crashed the Fairmont at a match race. At the NHRA Springnationals, he qualified #12 with an 8.79. An opening round 8.84/150.50 beat Randy Humphrey's 8.89/148 and in the second round his 8.82/152.80 advanced when Jim Kinnett fouled. Larry Lombardo, driving Bill Jenkins' Camaro, faced "Dyno in the semifinals. Don slowed to 8.89/149.00 in a loss to Lombardo's 8.80/154. He then went to Denver for the NHRA Mile High Nationals held at the end of June. A 9.31/144.69 qualified #5 in the eight-car field forcing Nicholson to run low qualifier, Bob Glidden in the first round. Nicholson tried hard in their race, but his 9.44/139.10 finished well behind Glidden's 9.12/141. A week later (July 8), he was at Suffolk Raceway for the NHRA Division 2 race. Don set Low ET at 8.51 and lasted until the final where he lost to Frank Iaconio. His next stop was at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals. Nicholson qualified #8 with an 8.72, and he beat Ronnie Manchester in the first round. In round two he improved slightly, to an 8.71 to beat Lombardo. Unfortunately, he lost to eventual winner Glidden in the semifinals. One of his better runs came at the US Pro Stock Open at Maryland International. Don first beat Carlton Phillips with an 8.72 and in the second round his 8.70 beat Lombardo's 8.80. He went up against low qualifier, Glidden in the semifinals and "Dyno" caught a great light that saw his 8.68 beat Bob's quicker 8.56. Nicholson wrapped it up by beating Iaconio in the final. Byron Raceway held a Funny Car show that included a best of three match race between Nicholson and Glidden. The cars were said to be legal weight, but the times turned seemed suspect. Don won all three races, running times of 8.43,8.36 and 8.34 as Glidden was right there with an 8.36 best. Early in August, Nicholson followed the NHRA tour to Canada for the Grandnationals. It was another eight-car show and Don qualified #3 with an 8.57/157.34. An 8.62 in the first round, beat Canadian, Alban Gauthier's 8.72, but in the semifinals he fouled against Glidden. At Beech Bend, for the NHRA Division 3 final, Don set Low ET at 8.71, but the Mustang broke in the final against Joe Satmary. Shortly after this the car was destroyed in a crash at Dragway 42 during a match race.

At Seattle for the NHRA Fallnationals, an 8.55/156.25 qualified #4, but the Volare broke in the first round, and slowed to 11.31/79.22 in a loss to Larry Johnson's 8.72/154. Randy ran 8.46/159.01 at Fremont WWCS in 4/79 to set a new national ET record.

Notes: Frank won the 1979 NHRA Fallnationals on an 8.49/157.06 to 8.47 holeshot over Bob Glidden in the quickest Pro Stock race ever at the time. - CompetitionPlus. Also, it ran 160.14. | This is the year that Frank Iaconio broke out as the quickest of the Chevy Pro Stock contingent. He didn't run at Pomona, but at the NHRA Gatornationals, he qualified #3 with an 8.58/157.34. Unfortunately, he lost to Mark Yuill's 8.76/153 in the first round, with an off-pace 8.83/146.10. He then won the NHRA Division 1 race at Englishtown, stopping Larry Lombardo in the final. Frank also didn't run at Baton Rouge for the NHRA Cajun Nationals. He qualified #3 again at the NHRA Springnationals with an 8.68/155.70, and he beat Ronnie Sox with an 8.77/153.84, and an 8.79/154.10 in round two beat Kevin Rotty before fouling away an 8.84/150.25 against eventual winner Bob Glidden's 8.66/157 in the semifinals. Another NHRA Division 1 race win came on June 24 at Maryland International. Once again, he faced Lombardo in the final, and Frank's 8.64/154.63 got a close victory over Lombardo's 8.65/156. He skipped going to Denver for the NHRA Mile High Nationals. On July 8, Iaconio went to Suffolk for the NHRA Division 2 race and came away with another win, stopping "Dyno" Don Nicholson in the final. The following week (July 15), things went really well for Frank at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals. He picked up his second career NHRA Pro Stock title. He qualified #2 behind Glidden, and these two would work their way to the final. Frank started by beating Sox with an 8.62. His 8.58 took out Lee Shepherd in round two, and a semifinal 8.61 beat Wally Booth. He had Bob concerned enough in the final that Bob fouled, and Iaconio ran 8.60/156.52 for the victory. Nicholson stopped Iaconio in the final at Maryland International's US Pro Stock Open, but Frank was strong there, running low 8.7's. He then traveled up to Canada for the NHRA Grandnationals. It was an eight-car show, and his 8.57/157.34 qualified #2 behind that Arrow from Whiteland, Indiana. It would come down to another final round showdown between these two. Frank had run 8.60 and 8.48 to beat Ronnie Manchester and Lombardo to reach the final. Glidden had lane choice with an 8.46 in his semifinal win. Frank ran a good 8.53, but it wasn't enough as Glidden won with an 8.47. He took some comfort by winning the fourth NHRA Division One race at Maple Grove shortly after that. He beat surprise finalist Larry Sengstack. He also won the final Division One race held in New England. There he also set Low ET and Top Speed at 8.64/155.97. His next stop was at Indy for the NHRA US Nationals. Frank's 8.58/160.42 (Top Speed) qualified second behind Glidden's 8.58/158. In the opening round of eliminations, he beat Booth. But in round two, he was upset by Lombardo. Larry's 8.67 beat his slightly quicker 8.66. That was a tough loss for Iaconio. He made up for it at Seattle for the NHRA Fallnationals. Once again, he qualified #2 with his 8.48/157.89 following Bob's 8.46/159. A first-round 8.54/151.00 stopped Lee Hunter, and in the second round, his 8.52/156.79 beat Lee Shepherd's 8.64/155. In the semifinals, he quickened his pace to 8.48/157.06 to put Joe Satmary's 8.68/154 Camaro on the trailer. Glidden had run just a tick quicker in his semifinal race, an 8.47/157. So the final was close. And was it ever! Frank got out ever so slightly on the Mopar, and his 8.49/157.06 held on for the victory over Bob's closing in 8.47/158.

Notes: 1978 photo. | This was the calm before the storm. The Reher-Morrison team ran well in '79, but nothing forecast just how well they would do in '80. Driver Lee Shepherd started the season by qualifying #2 at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals with an 8.61/157.34. An opening round 8.65/155.97 advanced over a fouling Gordie Rivera, but in round two the Camaro broke and slowed to 9.03 in a loss to Joe Satmary. At the NHRA Gatornationals, Lee's 8.62/156.25 qualified #4. But the team was unable to show for the first-round race against Don Campanello. Shepherd won the NHRA Division 4 race at LaPlace, stopping Shelby Jester in the final. At the rain-delayed NHRA Cajun Nationals, Lee qualified #3 in the eight-car field, and he got a solo run in the first round. In the semifinals, he beat Wally Booth's 8.81 AMC effort with an 8.72/154. This put Shepherd into the finals against Bob Glidden (a forecast of the next two seasons). Shepherd tried hard with an 8.71/155.44, but few could keep up with Glidden in '79 and Bob's 8.56 at a shutting off,149 got the victory. The team then stopped off at St. Louis on June 3 for the AHRA Gateway Nationals. Lee reset both ends of the AHRA record during qualifying with an 8.59/159.30. He then ran 8.65 and 8.73 to reach the final. His final round opponent was Bobby Marriott and Lee's 8.69 defeated Marriott's 8.86 for the victory. A week later (June 10), they were at Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals. An 8.71/154.63 qualified #5. In round one Shepherd's 8.85/152.02 beat Campanello's 8.87/153, but in round two an 8.82/153.06 was no match for eventual winner Glidden's 8.66/152. Alamo Dragway was the next stop for the AHRA Nationals. The team dominated. Lee qualified #1 with an 8.65/156.80, and he set Low ET and Top Speed to the final with an 8.61/159.56 that beat Marriott's 8.71. They did not go to Denver for the NHRA Mile High Nationals. Shepherd was disappointed when the Camaro broke in the final against Mike Oppen at the Amarillo Division 4 race.

Notes: Bryant was at Tucson for the AHRA Winternationals. He lasted until the semifinals before his 9.12/151.26 lost to eventual winner Don Nicholson's 9.07/150. At Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, his 8.73/155.70 qualified #7. An opening round 8.67/155.17 beat Lee Hunter's 8.88/153, and an 8.68/156.25 advanced when Lee Shepherd broke. In the semifinals, Roy Hill's Arrow broke, and Bryant's 8.64/157.06 advanced. He faced another Arrow in the final. This one was Bob Glidden's. As well as Sonny had been running, there was no stopping Glidden this day as he was running 8.4's. Sure enough, Bob's final round 8.49 got the victory over Bryant's 8.71. At the NHRA Gatornationals, Sonny qualified #5 with an 8.65/158.17. A first-round 8.67/156.52 beat Billy Wash, but in round two, he fouled away an 8.73/156.52 against Glidden, who ran 8.55/149.

Notes: Larry qualified #5 at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals with an 8.71/158.73. Richie Zul fouled against him in the first round, and his 8.85 advanced. Larry faced a low qualifier in round two, Bob Glidden and his new Arrow. Lombardo's 8.70/156.52 was no match for Glidden's 8.50 at only 144. At the NHRA Gatornationals, an 8.58/157.06 qualified #2 behind Glidden's 8.52. In the first round, Dempsey Hardy fouled against Larry's 8.64/154.37, but he lost a close one to Ronnie Sox in round two. Lombardo's 8.62/156.79 lost to Sox's 8.61/155. A runner-up finish to Frank Iaconio came at the NHRA Division 1 race at Englishtown. The "Jenkins" team did not run at the NHRA Cajun Nationals as rain postponed it. Another runner-up finish came at the NHRA Springnationals. Larry qualified #2 behind Glidden's Arrow with an 8.62 at a track record speed of 159.85. An 8.76/155.70 beat Wally Booth's 8.86/153, and in round two, his 8.72/155.44 advanced when Warren Johnson fouled. It was just like the old days in the semifinals when "Grumpy's Toy" was matched against "Dyno Don" Nicholson. This time Lombardo's 8.72/154.90 won over Nicholson's 8.89/149. This put Larry in the final against Glidden. Bob was pretty much unbeatable at this stage, and his 8.61/157 got the win over the Camaro's 8.76/151.51. Shortly after that (June 24), Lombardo picked up another runner-up finish at the NHRA Division One race at Maryland International. His final round 8.65/156.25 lost to Iaconio's 8.64/154. The Jenkins team did not race at Denver for the NHRA Mile High Nationals. Considering how well "Grumpy" always did at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals, the '79 event was a let-down for the team. Larry ran well in qualifying, hitting an 8.60, which was good enough for the third spot in the field. He defeated Roy Hill in the opening round, but the engine broke a pushrod in the second round, and he lost to Nicholson. Most of the Pro Stock teams then went to nearby Maryland International for its annual U.S. Open Pro Stock Championships. Lombardo was no exception. It was a sixteen-car show, and in round one, Larry's 8.77 beat Tom Gray. In round two, sneaky ol' "Dyno" got him again; this time, the Ford driver's 8.70 took out Lombardo's 8.80. That was followed by a big win at Martin, Michigan, for the PHR Championships. Larry qualified #3 with an 8.71/153.58. He picked it up to 8.68/154 in the semifinal to beat low qualifier Joe Satmary's 8.74/156. He faced the strong AMC of Booth in the final. The two had a good race, but the Camaro was strong, and Larry set Low ET while winning with an 8.65/154.90, topping Booth's 8.71/154. In early August, the team traveled to Canada for the NHRA Grandnationals. It was an eight-car field, and Larry qualified #4 with an 8.64/155.70. An 8.68 in the opening round beat Jim Cook but despite running a strong 8.54 in the semifinal, he lost to Iaconio's even better 8.48. More problems for the team came at Maple Grove for the fourth NHRA Division One race. Lombardo had set Low ET and Top Speed while qualifying #1. But in the first round, the car broke a lifter, and Larry lost to Larry Sengstack. The so-called "straw that broke the camel's back" came at Indy during the running of the NHRA U.S. Nationals. Larry qualified #6 for the race with an 8.67/157.61. He beat Satmary in round one, and in round two, he got a bit of "revenge" over Iaconio by beating him with an 8.67 that stopped Frank's quicker 8.66. A so-so 8.70/153.84 got the better of Mark Yuill at 8.82/157 in the semifinal. The problem was, Glidden had just won his semifinal race with an 8.58. Every run Bob had made in eliminations was between 8.56 and 8.58. That had to be weighing in heavily on Lombardo going into the final. He needed to somehow pick up over a tenth to win. So he gambled on the tree and lost. He ran 8.61/154.63 while Glidden got the victory with his slowest pass of the day, an 8.61/143. But the action didn't end there, unfortunately. Jenkins and Lombardo exchanged heated words, and as a result, Larry was fired from driving the car. AKA the Lotus Car with ladder bar suspension.

Notes: Sox and Martin were running well in '79 with their new small-block program. They qualified #4 at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals with an 8.65/157.06. An opening round 8.69/155.97 beat Billy Walsh, but the Omni broke against Roy Hill in round two. Things went much better at the Gatornationals. Sox qualified the car #6 with an 8.65/156.79. In the first round, his 8.63/155.17 beat Ronnie Manchester's 8.96/152. In round two, Sox improved to 8.61/155 to beat Larry Lombardo's 8.62/156 in Bill Jenkins' Camaro. Another 8.65/155 beat Don Campanello and set up the first all-Mopar NHRA Pro Stock final since the '73 Springnationals. Unfortunately, Sox was the underdog as Bob Glidden had been running 8.5's with ease. Ronnie tried to cut the light to close in the final and fouled away an 8.75/156.25 while Glidden sailed past with an 8.53 at only 147. The next event on the NHRA trail was the Cajun Nationals at Baton Rouge. Sox qualified #4 at the rain-delayed event and lost to Wally Booth in the first round. Things didn't go too well at the NHRA Springnationals, either. An 8.78 qualified #11, and he lost to Frank Iaconio in the first round. Another first-round loss came at the NHRA Mile High Nationals. It was an eight-car show, and Ronnie qualified #7 with a 9.34/144.92. In the opening round, both he and eventual winner Randy Humphrey ran 9.35 (Sox at 144.46), but Randy got the win. At Englishtown, for the NHRA Summernationals, an 8.72 qualified the team in the #10 spot. Sox lost to Iaconio in the first round. They did not follow the NHRA tour to Canada for the Grandnationals, but they were at Indianapolis for the US Nationals. Sox's 8.76/154.90 barely qualified (#15), and his first-round 8.89/154.17 got knocked out by Humphrey's 8.88/151. The next race was the NHRA Fallnationals at Seattle. Ronnie qualified #7 with an 8.600/156.24. A first-round 8.64/155.17 beat Brad Yuill and another 8.60/155.70 took out Don Nicholson in round two. He came up against a wall in the form of Glidden in the semifinals, and despite running a strong 8.62/155.97, he lost to Glidden's 8.47/157. The NHRA season came to a close at Ontario for the World Finals. There, Ronnie's 8.82/153.84 qualified #10. His season came to an end in the first round, where his 8.84/153.06 lost to Iaconio's 8.70/152. In NHRA points, the team finished tenth. They sold their NHRA legal Omni to Jerry Hurley in December and decided to run big-inch IHRA events for '80. Also 8.659 at Winters and 8.63 156.79 at Gators, where he was Runner up. Also 8.62 155.97 and 8.64 155.17 NHRA Seattle Fallnationals.

Notes: Nicholson started the year the way any racer would've liked, by winning. In January, he was at Tucson for the AHRA Winternationals, where he qualified #1 for the eight-car field with an 8.87/154.37. He beat Sonny Bryant in the semifinals to face Kevin Rotty for the win. In the final, Rotty's Camaro blew a motor shortly after leaving the line, and Nicholson got the victory with another 8.87 at 150.25. "Dyno Don" qualified #3 at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals with an 8.654/157.34. Gordie Rivera fouled against him in the first round, and Nicholson advanced with an 8.68. A second-round 8.72/155.70 beat Sonny Bryant's 8.82/148. In the semifinals, he lost to eventual winner Bob Glidden. His 8.83/156.25 lost to Bob's 8.55 at just 140. He then went to Beeline and won the NHRA Division 7 Opener by stopping Gary Hansen in the final. At Gainesville, for the NHRA Gatornationals, he qualified in the dreaded #9 spot with an 8.68/156.79. That set up a first-round meeting with low qualifier Glidden. Once again, Glidden came out on top in their meeting with an 8.58/151, beating Don's 8.74/149.50. He then won the NHRA Division 2 Opener at DeSoto. He set Low ET in the final with an 8.63/151.77 that beat Jim Kinnett's 8.83/153 runner-up effort. He did not compete at the NHRA Cajun Nationals and showed up at NHRA Columbus with a new Mustang.

Notes: Nicholson borrowed the Mustang II he had sold to Johnny Dowey for the NHRA Division Two Opener at DeSoto. He borrowed it back because he had wrecked his own Mustang II, and his Fairmont was set up for match racing and was not NHRA legal. It proved to be a wise move as the veteran ran 8.77 at only 141.73 in the first round, to beat Pat Williams' 9.22/147, and he made an easy solo in the semifinals as only six cars had shown for the eight-car field. In the final, he set low et with an 8.63/151.77, winning over Jim Kinnett's 8.83/153. Dyno Don ran this 77 Mustang at Indy and ran an 8.657/156.24. Confirmed by National Dragster, Nicholson family.

Notes: Kevin started the season at Tucson for the AHRA Winternationals. It was an eight-car show and Rotty's 9.04/149.75 qualified on the "bump." He made it into the final against Don Nicholson, but in their race, the Camaro blew its engine giving Nicholson an easy win.
