Notes: Hill started the '79 season at Tucson for the AHRA Winternationals. He lasted until the semifinals before fouling against Kevin Rotty. Roy qualified on the "bump" at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals with an 8.80/156.79. In the first round, his 8.82/155.17 advanced when Tom Chelbana's Starfire broke. Ronnie Sox's Omni broke in round two, and Roy moved into the semifinals with an 8.80. Unfortunately, his Arrow broke in just off the line in his semifinal race with Joe Satmary. He failed to qualify at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationalsand at Columbus for the NHRA pringnationals where his 8.88 best was only good enough for the third alternate. Roy failed to qualify at Indy for the NHRA US Nationals. He blew an engine so badly during qualifying that the rods coming out of the engine actually damaged the frame. His 8.89/154.10 best was good for the sixth alternate. |

He qualified #6 in the eight-car field with a 9.310/144.92. Unfortunately, he fouled away a potential winning 9.32/144.23 in the first round, that lost to Sonny Bryant's 9.35/135. Lee qualified #10 at the Fallnationals with a great 8.689/156.52. He dropped off to a 9.03/141 in round one, that lost to Frank Iaconio's 8.54/151. Lee qualified #8 at the World Finals at 8.769/157.06. He beat Brad Yuill in round one, 8.86/153 to 8.97/153, but he broke against Don Nicoholson in round two. |

Notes: Frank won the 1979 NHRA Fallnationals on an 8.49/157.06 to 8.47 holeshot over Bob Glidden in the quickest Pro Stock race ever at the time. - CompetitionPlus. Also, it ran 160.14. | This is the year that Frank Iaconio broke out as the quickest of the Chevy Pro Stock contingent. He didn't run at Pomona, but at the NHRA Gatornationals, he qualified #3 with an 8.58/157.34. Unfortunately, he lost to Mark Yuill's 8.76/153 in the first round, with an off-pace 8.83/146.10. He then won the NHRA Division 1 race at Englishtown, stopping Larry Lombardo in the final. Frank also didn't run at Baton Rouge for the NHRA Cajun Nationals. He qualified #3 again at the NHRA Springnationals with an 8.68/155.70, and he beat Ronnie Sox with an 8.77/153.84, and an 8.79/154.10 in round two beat Kevin Rotty before fouling away an 8.84/150.25 against eventual winner Bob Glidden's 8.66/157 in the semifinals. Another NHRA Division 1 race win came on June 24 at Maryland International. Once again, he faced Lombardo in the final, and Frank's 8.64/154.63 got a close victory over Lombardo's 8.65/156. He skipped going to Denver for the NHRA Mile High Nationals. On July 8, Iaconio went to Suffolk for the NHRA Division 2 race and came away with another win, stopping "Dyno" Don Nicholson in the final. The following week (July 15), things went really well for Frank at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals. He picked up his second career NHRA Pro Stock title. He qualified #2 behind Glidden, and these two would work their way to the final. Frank started by beating Sox with an 8.62. His 8.58 took out Lee Shepherd in round two, and a semifinal 8.61 beat Wally Booth. He had Bob concerned enough in the final that Bob fouled, and Iaconio ran 8.60/156.52 for the victory. Nicholson stopped Iaconio in the final at Maryland International's US Pro Stock Open, but Frank was strong there, running low 8.7's. He then traveled up to Canada for the NHRA Grandnationals. It was an eight-car show, and his 8.57/157.34 qualified #2 behind that Arrow from Whiteland, Indiana. It would come down to another final round showdown between these two. Frank had run 8.60 and 8.48 to beat Ronnie Manchester and Lombardo to reach the final. Glidden had lane choice with an 8.46 in his semifinal win. Frank ran a good 8.53, but it wasn't enough as Glidden won with an 8.47. He took some comfort by winning the fourth NHRA Division One race at Maple Grove shortly after that. He beat surprise finalist Larry Sengstack. He also won the final Division One race held in New England. There he also set Low ET and Top Speed at 8.64/155.97. His next stop was at Indy for the NHRA US Nationals. Frank's 8.58/160.42 (Top Speed) qualified second behind Glidden's 8.58/158. In the opening round of eliminations, he beat Booth. But in round two, he was upset by Lombardo. Larry's 8.67 beat his slightly quicker 8.66. That was a tough loss for Iaconio. He made up for it at Seattle for the NHRA Fallnationals. Once again, he qualified #2 with his 8.48/157.89 following Bob's 8.46/159. A first-round 8.54/151.00 stopped Lee Hunter, and in the second round, his 8.52/156.79 beat Lee Shepherd's 8.64/155. In the semifinals, he quickened his pace to 8.48/157.06 to put Joe Satmary's 8.68/154 Camaro on the trailer. Glidden had run just a tick quicker in his semifinal race, an 8.47/157. So the final was close. And was it ever! Frank got out ever so slightly on the Mopar, and his 8.49/157.06 held on for the victory over Bob's closing in 8.47/158. |

Notes: Bill Jenkins returned to driving in '79 after having a heated argument with his driver Larry Lombardo after Larry fouled in the final against Bob Glidden at the NHRA U. S. Nationals. The two exchanged some harsh words and Jenkins let him go. His first event behind the wheel since the '76 NHRA Winternationals came at the World Finals at Ontario Motor Speedway. He qualified #9, which set up a first-round meeting against low qualifier Glidden. Bill’s 8.83/153.32 lost to eventual winner Bob’s 8.66/155. |

Notes: Built this car initially as a 1973 Pinto Green & Gold, full-frame car, four-link, Floater axles, rear disc brakes, but for lack of cash, we used the Pinto stock front drum brakes, control arms with Load leveler shock as the front coil-over sitting on chassis stops and a Top loader Nash 4-speed. In 1976 I got a Liberty 4 speed clutchless From Dyno Don and made it work with a loose Mcleod Dual disc clutch. In 1978, Updated to 1978 Pinto with Strange front suspension and Koni coil-over shocks plus lowered the front to 3 inches. |

Notes: Larry qualified on the "bump" at Indy for the NHRA U.S. Nationals with an 8.795/155.44. In the opening round, his 8.807/153.84 beat Sonny Bryant's 9.68/96. In the second round, he fouled away an 8.832/155.17 against Mark Yuill, who advanced with an 8.79/154. At Seattle, for the NHRA Fallnationals, he ran 8.73/155.17 to qualify #12. He improved to an 8.72/154.90 to beat Randy Humphrey's shut-off in round one, but his 8.84/153.58 in round two lost to Joe Satmary's 8.66/154. After running so well, it was surprising to see his name among the non-qualifiers at Ontario Motor Speedway for the NHRA World Finals (first alternate, times unknown but #16 was 8.88). Larry finished 18th in NHRA Pro Stock points. AKA Whirlwind. |

Notes: Warren spent most of his time this season in IHRA competition. He didn't run at the first few NHRA events but was at Columbus in June for the NHRA Springnationals. His 8.82 (speed unknown) qualified #14. Andy Mannarino fouled against him in the opening round, and Warren advanced with an 8.888/150.50. He fouled against Larry Lombardo in the second round and ran 9.061/150.75. That was WJ's only NHRA national event this year. We formerly listed 8.63/157.34 times for this year, but that did not occur at an NHRA national event. We need to confirm. |

Notes: Kinnett qualified on the "bump" at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals with an 8.74/153.06. In the opening round, his 8.77/155.17 beat alternate Lamar Walden's 8.92/151. In round two, his 8.87/152.80 fell to Don Campanello's 8.68/156. Jim was at DeSoto for the NHRA Division Two opener at the beginning of April. Only six cars showed, and his 8.93/152.02 in the first round beat Bill Robertson. In the semi-final, an 8.85/155.05 beat Wyman Barnett, who blew an engine. He faced "Dyno Don" Nicholson in the final, and despite running an 8.83/153.52, he finished runner-up to Don's 8.63/151. He was in Baton Rouge near the end of the month for the NHRA Cajun Nationals. Rain delayed the running of the race until May 2, and he fouled against eventual winner Bob Glidden in the first round. Kinnett had one of the four Mopar Pro Stockers to qualify at Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals. His 8.86 sat on the "bump" for the sixteen-car field. His 8.94/151.00 in the opening round advanced when Alban Gauthier fouled. But in round two, he fouled at 8.96/151.51 against "Dyno Don's" 8.82/152. He qualified #13 at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals with an 8.73, but he lost to Glidden in round two. Next came a runner-up finish to Lee Shepherd at the NHRA Division Four race at Baton Rouge. Kinnett also ran well at the final NHRA Division Three race held at Beech Bend. While he didn't reach the final, he set Top Speed at 155.17. In August, Jim was one of only three Pro Stock cars at Richmond Dragway for the NHRA Division Two race. He qualified #1 with an 8.72/153.84 (Low ET and Top Speed) and got the "odd-lot" solo in the first round. In the final, his 8.73/151.00 easily beat Morris Johnson's 9.43/123. At Indy, for the NHRA US Nationals, he was unfortunate as his 8.721/153.84 qualified #9. It was unfortunate as he had to race low qualifier Glidden in the opening round of eliminations. Glidden's 8.58/157 easily beat Jim's 8.77/153.38. The final NHRA Division Two race was held at Gainesville. Unfortunately, his late 8.79/151.00 in the first round lost to Johnson's 9.07/147. Jim ran 8.72 in the first round of the Summernationals to beat Don Campanello. We see an 8.720 on the results sheet, but that may be dropping the third digit. We are listing that 8.720 as his best for now, but otherwise, his 8.721 at Indy is Jim's quickest confirmed ET of the year. We need validation of the several 8.72s he ran in 1979. Former Vanke, Castaldo 1973 car reskinned as a Volare. |

Notes: Bill built his first pro ride himself from an Arrow Dynamics chassis over the Winter of '77, '78. 1978 Pro Stock Monza featured trick push, button shifting. Ran brackets in 1978, hitting high nines. Car ran Pro Stock at a handful of AHRA events in '79. AHRA always had 8 car fields in Pro Stock and Bill was the 9th quickest at the three national events that he entered that year. But P.S., nobody broke. - Barry Kuhlmann |

Notes: Larry qualified #5 at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals with an 8.71/158.73. Richie Zul fouled against him in the first round, and his 8.85 advanced. Larry faced a low qualifier in round two, Bob Glidden and his new Arrow. Lombardo's 8.70/156.52 was no match for Glidden's 8.50 at only 144. At the NHRA Gatornationals, an 8.58/157.06 qualified #2 behind Glidden's 8.52. In the first round, Dempsey Hardy fouled against Larry's 8.64/154.37, but he lost a close one to Ronnie Sox in round two. Lombardo's 8.62/156.79 lost to Sox's 8.61/155. A runner-up finish to Frank Iaconio came at the NHRA Division 1 race at Englishtown. The "Jenkins" team did not run at the NHRA Cajun Nationals as rain postponed it. Another runner-up finish came at the NHRA Springnationals. Larry qualified #2 behind Glidden's Arrow with an 8.62 at a track record speed of 159.85. An 8.76/155.70 beat Wally Booth's 8.86/153, and in round two, his 8.72/155.44 advanced when Warren Johnson fouled. It was just like the old days in the semifinals when "Grumpy's Toy" was matched against "Dyno Don" Nicholson. This time Lombardo's 8.72/154.90 won over Nicholson's 8.89/149. This put Larry in the final against Glidden. Bob was pretty much unbeatable at this stage, and his 8.61/157 got the win over the Camaro's 8.76/151.51. Shortly after that (June 24), Lombardo picked up another runner-up finish at the NHRA Division One race at Maryland International. His final round 8.65/156.25 lost to Iaconio's 8.64/154. The Jenkins team did not race at Denver for the NHRA Mile High Nationals. Considering how well "Grumpy" always did at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals, the '79 event was a let-down for the team. Larry ran well in qualifying, hitting an 8.60, which was good enough for the third spot in the field. He defeated Roy Hill in the opening round, but the engine broke a pushrod in the second round, and he lost to Nicholson. Most of the Pro Stock teams then went to nearby Maryland International for its annual U.S. Open Pro Stock Championships. Lombardo was no exception. It was a sixteen-car show, and in round one, Larry's 8.77 beat Tom Gray. In round two, sneaky ol' "Dyno" got him again; this time, the Ford driver's 8.70 took out Lombardo's 8.80. That was followed by a big win at Martin, Michigan, for the PHR Championships. Larry qualified #3 with an 8.71/153.58. He picked it up to 8.68/154 in the semifinal to beat low qualifier Joe Satmary's 8.74/156. He faced the strong AMC of Booth in the final. The two had a good race, but the Camaro was strong, and Larry set Low ET while winning with an 8.65/154.90, topping Booth's 8.71/154. In early August, the team traveled to Canada for the NHRA Grandnationals. It was an eight-car field, and Larry qualified #4 with an 8.64/155.70. An 8.68 in the opening round beat Jim Cook but despite running a strong 8.54 in the semifinal, he lost to Iaconio's even better 8.48. More problems for the team came at Maple Grove for the fourth NHRA Division One race. Lombardo had set Low ET and Top Speed while qualifying #1. But in the first round, the car broke a lifter, and Larry lost to Larry Sengstack. The so-called "straw that broke the camel's back" came at Indy during the running of the NHRA U.S. Nationals. Larry qualified #6 for the race with an 8.67/157.61. He beat Satmary in round one, and in round two, he got a bit of "revenge" over Iaconio by beating him with an 8.67 that stopped Frank's quicker 8.66. A so-so 8.70/153.84 got the better of Mark Yuill at 8.82/157 in the semifinal. The problem was, Glidden had just won his semifinal race with an 8.58. Every run Bob had made in eliminations was between 8.56 and 8.58. That had to be weighing in heavily on Lombardo going into the final. He needed to somehow pick up over a tenth to win. So he gambled on the tree and lost. He ran 8.61/154.63 while Glidden got the victory with his slowest pass of the day, an 8.61/143. But the action didn't end there, unfortunately. Jenkins and Lombardo exchanged heated words, and as a result, Larry was fired from driving the car. AKA the Lotus Car with ladder bar suspension. |

Notes: The team debuted on the NHRA national event tour at Columbus at 8.75/155.70 to qualify #6. Andy fouled against Warren Johnson in round one, losing an 8.88/150 to 8.914/152.80 contest. He qualified #7 at Englishtown at 8.70/155.70. An 8.83/154.37 beat Ronnie Manchester's 8.90/152 in round one. Fellow AMC racer Wally Booth won their close round two contest, 8.72/155 to 8.75/155.17. He was credited with an 8.65 at the PHR Nats in Martin. We need confirmation of that ET and speed. Andy qualified #13 at Indy at 8.747/153.84. A first-round 8.888/152.54 beat Don Nicholson's fouling shut-off pass, but he ran into Bob Glidden in round two and lost an 8.56/157 to 8.779/154.10 contest. |
