Notes: Larry was at Edgewater on May 21 for the NHRA Division Three race. He qualified #5 in the eight-car field with a 9.08. Unfortunately, that set up a first-round meeting with the low qualifier, Wally Booth. As expected, Booth's 8.67/155 easily beat Peternel's 9.06/151.75. On June 4th, he was at Indianapolis for the next NhRA Division Three race. His 9.03 qualified #7, and his opening round 9.12/150.25 lost to Booth's AMC at 8.70/156. The next NHRA Division Three race was held at Martin, Michigan, on June 24. Larry's 9.01 qualified #6, and wouldn't you know it, his first-round 9.08 lost to Booth's 8.73/154. He had to be getting sick of seeing the little Hornet! On July 9th, he finally got some different competition at Edgewater for the NHRA Division Three race. He qualified #5, and this time, he faced low qualifier Joe Satmary in round one. But the Duster had some problems and slowed to 15.81 in their race, and Satmary advanced with an 8.76/154. He was back at Martin, Michigan, for the PHR Championships on August 13. A 9.30 qualified #15, and his opening round 9.37/143.76 lost to Dave Avery's 8.98/154. The final NHRA Division Three race was run the following week (Aug 20). Peternel's first-round 9.15/149.25 lost to Satmary's 8.76/154. |

Notes: Mike was at Firebird Raceway on May 21 for the NHRA Division Six race. His 9.17/144.88 qualified #5. That set up a first-round meeting with low qualifier Mark Yuill. Rendel had a little luck on his side as Yuill broke on the line, and he got to solo at 9.82/137.36. Unfortunately, his Pinto broke against Brad Yuill in the semifinal. |

Notes: Rivera qualified #6 at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals with an 8.77/155. He improved to 8.73/155 in a first-round victory over John Hagen's 8.86/154, and in round two, his 8.79/154 advanced over a crossed-up Wally Booth. His run ended in the semifinals, where his 8.82/155.44 lost to Larry Lombardo's 8.77/153. He qualified #8 at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals with an 8.687/157.34. He beat Virgil Brunner in the first round, with an 8.83/155. In the second round, his 8.86/155 lost to Lombardo's 8.68/156. He then went to Fremont for the NHRA Division Seven race. His 8.61/156.79 qualified #2 in the eight-car field but in the opening round of eliminations, his 8.64/157.61 lost to Mark Yuill's 8.64/157 in a very tight race. NHRA held its Cajun Nationals at State Capitol Raceway near Baton Rouge at the end of April, and it was a tough eight-car show. Rivera was the first alternate with an 8.73/155.70 best. But he had out-qualified Lombardo and Kevin Rotty, among others. He was at OCIR for the next NHRA Division Seven race in May. He qualified #7 at 8.80, and his 8.85/142.63 lost to Randy Humphrey's 8.73/154 in the opening round. Also, 8.66 at Sacramento CA 6/18/78. |

Notes: Former Pat Ulik car. Brian was at St. Louis early in June for the AHRA Gateway Nationals. It was an eight-car field, and his 9.32/149.01 qualified #7. In the opening round, his 9.57/121.30 fell to Shelby Jester's 9.01/150. Not long after that (June 18), he was at Marion, SD, for the third NHRA Division Five event. Only four cars ran in eliminations, and in the first round, his 9.42/143.54 beat Donn Patrick. Rodekopf faced John Hagen in the final, and Hagen's 8.90/154 took the title over his 9.43/145.63 runner-up effort. In July, he was at Brainerd for the NHRA Division Five race held there. He qualified #5 in the eight-car field, but the car broke, and he could not answer the call for the first-round of eliminations. Photo from 1978. |

Notes: This was one of the last pro stock cars that began life as a genuine factory-built car. Kevin Rotty started his season at Tucson for the AHRA Winternationals. He qualified #2 behind Sonny Bryant. Rotty easily won his first race over Don Campanello, but he had a tough semifinal race against Larry Lombardo driving Bill Jenkins' Monza. Rotty won the race with an 8.99/150.50 edging Larry's 9.01/146. He then faced low qualifier Bryant in the final. Kevin improved to 8.91/151.51 to get the victory over Sonny's 9.00/152. He then went to Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals where he qualified #5 with an 8.74/156. In the opening round, opponent Jean Batteux fouled and he advanced with a 9.27/129. But in round two, his troubled 9.54/123 lost to eventual winner Bob Glidden's 8.67/153. A week later, he was at the NHRA Phoenix Winter Championships. He qualified #2 behind Warren Johnson and the two would both make their way to the final where Rotty's 8.90 finished runner-up to Johnson's 8.74. He really ran well in qualifying at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals. There his 8.607/159.29 qualified #3, but his brakes failed in the first round, and he rolled through the lights and fouled. In April, he was at Baton Rouge for the NHRA Cajun Nationals. It was an eight-car field and his 8.76 (third alternate) failed to qualify. He still had Top Speed for the Pro Stock cars. He then won the NHRA Division 7 race at OCIR by beating Bryant in the final. A strong 8.68/157.06 qualified #2 at Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals, but an opening round 8.83/155.70 fell to Joe Satmary's quick-leaving 8.84/154. The following week (June 18), he was at Sacramento for the third NHRA Division Seven race. He set Low ET and Top Speed in qualifying #1 for the eight-car field with an 8.59/157.07. Randy Humphrey fouled against him in the first round, and Kevin advanced with an 8.70/153.85. In the semifinal, his 8.69/154.11 lost to Mark Yuill's 8.67/155. Early in July, he went to Bonneville Raceway for the fourth NHRA Division Seven race. In the opening round, his 9.07/148.77 beat Gordie Rivera. In the semifinal, Kevin's 9.11/148.52 defeated Lee Hunter's 9.17/146. He faced Sonny Bryant in the final and Bryant had been running about a half tenth quicker throughout the race. Rotty gambled on the tree and fouled away a 9.07/149.01 while Sonny ran 9.01/146 for the victory. Kevin ran 8.59/157.07 at NHRA Division 7 Sacramento, but lost to Mark Yuill on a holeshot in the final, 8.69 to Kevin's 8.67. The Gainesville numbers were Kevin's best national event times of the year. |

Notes: Joe qualified #13 at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals with an 8.729/154.10. An opening round 8.780/155.44 lost to "Dyno Don" Nicholson's 8.69/157. At Baton Rouge for the NHRA Cajun Nationals, Joe ran 8.710/158.52 to qualify #6 for the eight-car field. Unfortunately, he fouled away an 8.84/155.70 in a first-round loss to Lee Shepherd, who ran 9.04/152 to advance. On May 21, he was at Edgewater for the NHRA Division Three race. His 8.74 qualified #2 behind Wally Booth's 8.67, and these two would work their way into the final. Joe ran another 8.74/155.17 in the first round to stop Virgil Brunner's 9.16/151. A semifinal 8.75/155.44 took out Dave Avery's 8.89/151. Booth had the performance advantage by about a tenth as he ran 8.65 in his semifinal race, but the AMC broke in the final, and Joe ran 8.83/155.70 for the victory. The next Division Two race was held at Indianapolis on June 4. Once again, Joe qualified #2 (8.67/157.34), but this time he followed Glidden (8.65/158). An opening round 8.78 beat Brunner's 9.38, but he fouled away an 8.81/154.37 against Andy Mannarino in the semifinals. Satmary qualified #10 at the NHRA Springnationals with an 8.760/155.17. An 8.84/154.90 beat Kevin Rotty's slightly quicker 8.83/155 in the first round, and in round two, Don Campanello's 8.95/152 fell to Joe's 8.87/154.37. His run ended in the semifinals, where Bob Glidden's 8.72/151 put his 8.89/154.63 on the trailer. Joe qualified #6 at the Englishtown Summernationals at 8.722 (speed not reported). He beat Don Campanello in round one, 8.66/156.24 to 8.81/152. NI round two, Joe took out Frank Iaconio, 8.65/157.06 to 8.71/156. Larry Lombardo ended his day in the semis, 8.63/155 to 8.69/155.44. Joe qualified #2 at the Grandnationals at 8.630/155.97 (Top Speed of the Meet). He lost to a Dempsey Hardy holeshot in round one, 8.77/153 to 8.75/154.63. Joe had a fantastic U.S. Nationals at Indy. He qualified #4 at 8.680/155.70. In round one, he took out Brad Yuill, 8.735/153.58 to 8.80/155. Randy Humphrey had problems against him in round two, and Joe won, 8.734/154.63 to 9.54/105. Satmary then grabbed a huge holeshot win over Lee Shepherd in the semis with his 8.745/154.90 taking out the Reher & Morrison team's 8.728/153.32. Joe was up against world-beater Bob Glidden in the final, and his 8.772/155.17 couldn't catch Bob's 8.61 at only 146. Joe's next race was the World Finals at Ontario. He qualified #6 at 8.720/155.70. He got a bit of revenge on Dempsey Hardy in round one, 8.823/153.58 to 8.99/151. Larry Lombardo put a close to his season in round two, however, 8.71/155 to 8.880/153.32. It was a good year for the racer from Hammond, Indiana. Did Joe run 8.62 in Divisional action? |

Notes: Eldon Doman built this car new. Don Hardy did most of the chassis. Cleveland power by Doman. 4-speed Lenco. The family still owns the car. It is, as it last ran in 1980, unrestored. It still fires right up and sounds as awesome as ever. It qualified for every race it entered. - Stephen Doman | Mike was running at the Bakersfield March Meet. Unfortunately, his 9.09 in the opening round lost to Mark Yuill's 8.85. |

Notes: Lee Shepherd returned to Pro Stock in 78 after taking 77 off; he raced Modified that year. The Reher-Morrison team really picked up its pace in '78. While the team didn't run the Winter meets, they were at Gainesville in March for the NHRA Gatornationals, where Lee qualified #11 with an 8.70/157. In the first round, opponent Kevin Rotty had his brakes fail, and he rolled through the lights and fouled. Shepherd advanced with an 8.82/155. In the second round, he fell off to a 9.31/116 loss to Warren Johnson's 8.71/156. Later that month, they really opened some eyes at LaPlace for the NHRA Division 4 Opener. Shepherd ran over 160 on three runs, making him the first NHRA legal Pro Stock car to run over 160. His best speed of 160.71 was a new NHRA record. Lee went on to win the race. Then at the next Division 4 race at Green Valley Raceway, the team ran the first NHRA legal 8.4. Shepherd qualified #1 with an 8.48 and then ran 8.53, 8.50, and a final round 8.54 to win that race too. He was runner-up to Johnson at the NHRA Division 5 race at Pueblo Motorsports Park, and on April 30, he was runner-up again, this time to Bob Glidden at the NHRA Cajun Nationals, where his 8.71 in the final lost to Bob's 8.65. The team's next stop was at Tulsa for the AHRA Springnationals. Lee qualified #1 in the eight-car field with an 8.80/152.54. A first-round 8.77 (Low ET) at 152.28 beat Shelby Jester, but his transmission let go in round two, and he lost to eventual winner Sonny Bryant. He picked up his third straight Division 4 race when he won at Houston. He set Low ET at 8.74, and a final round 8.79/154.10 (Top Speed) beat Bobby Marriott. The next stop was at St. Louis for the AHRA Gateway Nationals. Shepherd qualified #2 with an 8.67/159.30 (Top Speed). He beat Jim Feurer in the first round, with an 8.73/152.02. In the semifinals, he soloed with an 8.96 when Jerry Haas lost a wheel on the line. In the final, he faced Jester. It was no contest as Lee won with an 8.69 over Shelby's 9.07. The following week (June 11), they were at Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals. Lee's 8.69/154.90 qualified #3, but he was late off the line in round one, and his 8.83/152.28 lost to Dempsey Hardy's 8.86/153. He won the AHRA Nationals at Alamo Dragway on June 18. An 8.83 (Low ET) at 152 qualified #1 and a first-round 8.84/152 advanced when Marriott fouled against him. In the semifinals, Jester fouled, and Lee's 8.83/153 (Top Speed) moved into the final. There, his 8.86/152 got the win over Jerry Janke. Another win on the AHRA Grand American circuit came at Springfield International on July 4 for the Ozark Nationals. Don Nicholson made a surprise appearance, hoping to stop Shepherd's dominance of the AHRA events. "Dyno" looked good in qualifying, running 8.83 for the pole. Shepherd was back in second with a distant 9.03/144.92. Lee's 8.98/147 advanced when Ken Hilger fouled in the first round. He improved to 8.94/149 in the semifinals to beat Janke's 9.16/143. This set up a final-round showdown with Nicholson. Don had the edge on paper as he had run 8.89 and 8.87 to reach the final. But in the final, Lee ran his best of the weekend, and Don ran his worst. Shepherd's 8.90/150.57 got the victory over "Dyno's" 8.91/152. Janke was Lee's final round victim at Riverside for the fourth NHRA Division 4 race. Lee's final round 8.78/147.81 was too much for Jerry's 8.94/141. It was then off to Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals. The team was using a 5-speed transmission at this race. An 8.66/156.79 qualified #3, but Mark Yuill surprised the team in the first round, with an 8.67/157 that beat Lee's 8.76/152.80. Like many other Pro Stock teams, they then went to Maryland International for the US Pro Stock Open. It was an eight-car show, and Lee set Low ET and Top Speed in the opening round where his 8.60/155.44 beat Warren Johnson's 8.75 at the same speed. Larry Lombardo gambled on the tree in the semifinal and won as his 8.79 beat Shepherd's quicker 8.67. Shortly after that (July 22), these same two would meet in the final at the fourth NHRA Division One race held at Maple Grove. Lee had set Low ET during qualifying at 8.62. He ran 8.76 to beat James Cook in the opening round, and an 8.70/152.54 in the semifinal defeated Frank Iaconio's 8.80/153. Once again, Larry got the jump in the final, and his 8.76/154 nosed out Shepherd's 8.72/153.58 for the victory. Also ran 8.60 and 8.61 at LaPlace, LA. |
