Notes: Won Maple Grove All-Pro Series 3/76. | Musi was at Englishtown for an eight-car show in April. He qualified on the "bump" with a 9.28/146.34, and in the first round, his 9.21/147.78 lost to Don Campanello's 9.03/151. Pat went 8.86/152.28 at Englishtown (not the national event). He had the car listed for sale in a November ND. The ad stated that the car's best NHRA "legal" time was 8.86/154.60. It went on to say that it ran 8.74/156.50 in IHRA's more liberal rules. We are not listing those without confirmation via event results. See the match race entry for this year as well.

Notes: Frank Iaconio and Ray Allen debuted their new Monza at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals. Ray was supposed to drive, but did not have his license renewed. So, Frank drove and continued to drive. He qualified #15 at 9.003/151.77, and in the opening round, his 8.985/152.26 lost to Richie Zul's 8.929/152.54. It didn't take long before the car became a contender. At Indy, for the NHRA US Nationals, an 8.814/153.58 qualified #6. Frank ran 8.804/152.02 to beat Bob Ingles at 8.88/151 in round one. He ran 8.821/153.06 to beat Roy Hill's 8.90/152 in round two. Frank’s best run came next with an 8.791/154.10 over Joe Satmary's 8.86/152 in the semifinals. He faced the AMC Hornet of Wally Booth in the final. Booth's winning semifinal ET was 8.69, so Frank took a chance on the 'tree. He fouled away an 8.815/145.86 while Booth picked up the victory with an 8.68/155. That was the team's last NHRA national event of the year.

Notes: Mark ran 9.12 at Bakersfield. He qualified #1 at Sears Point at the end of May for the Western Pro Stock Championships with a 9.24. Unfortunately, he was rudely upset in the first round, where he lost to Randy Humphrey. On July 17, he competed in the Sacramento Fox Hunt race. It was an eight-car field, and in the first round, his 8.93/153 beat Jean Batteaux. In the semi-final, he improved to 8.90/153 to defeat Humphrey's 9.12/150. He faced Dick Landy in the final, and despite improving even more to an 8.87/152, he lost to Landy's 8.84/153. Ran the team’s usual three national events: Pomona, Seattle, and Ontario. Mark was a third alternate DNQ at Pomona (no time available). He qualified #10 at Seattle at 8.936/154.10 but lost to Dave Kanners in round one, 8.74 to 9.05. Mark finished the season as he started, third alternate DNQ at Ontario with a 9.116/153.06. Mark won the 1976 Pro Stock Open at Boise.

Notes: Gapp and Roush were cornerstones of Ford Pro Stock racing. From their Boss 429-powered Mavericks through their 351-powered Pintos, Mustang IIs, and this Maverick. But '76 was the beginning of the end for the team. NHRA rules all but factored the Fords out of existence, and the team was forced to go elsewhere to be competitive. They found the IHRA rules more to their liking and raced more under that organization. Wayne started the year in the four-door Maverick. Wayne qualified #6 at Beeline Dragway for the Phoenix Winter Classic with an 8.96. In the opening round, he improved to 8.92/152.54 to defeat Brad Yuill's 9.25/146. In round two, he beat Bob Glidden, but he lost to eventual winner Larry Lombardo in the semi-final. He had a great outing at the Pomona Winters. He qualified #6 at 8.831/153.58. He took out Gordie Rivera in round one, 8.86/153.84 to 9.05/152. In round two, he eked out a win over Warren Johnson, 8.92/152.80 to 8.95/154. He easily defeated an off-pace Dyno Don Nicholson in the semis, 8.87/153.32 to 9.30/135. But he faced Glidden in their ninth NHRA final round match-up (and their last). Bob won a definitive victory in the final round, 8.821/155.70 to Wayne's 8.916/153.32. Wayne debuted a 1976 Pinto at Gainesville (see the other entry).

Notes: Photo from the 1976 NHRA Gatornationals, Gainesville, Florida. On May 9, Hobson was at Englishtown for the NHRA Division One opener. He qualified #3 with an 8.90, and in the first round, his 8.87/153.06 beat Don Campanello's 9.10/149. Unfortunately, in the semifinal, he fouled against the eventual winner Larry Lombardo. Carl won an NHRA Pro Stock Circuit race at Great Meadows, N.J., on May 29. It was an eight-car show, and in the first round, he beat Bob Ingles with a 9.02/153.32. In the semifinals, his 8.98/152.80 beat Tom Gray. The final was against the similar big-block Camaro of Richie Zul. Hobson got a slight holeshot, and his 8.98/153.84 got the victory over Zul's 8.97 at just 144.

Notes: Gary was at Portland International in August for the NHRA Division Six race. He qualified #1 with an 8.89. He made it into the final against Mardy Maltais, and the two had a good race with Mardy's 8.93/151 beating Gary's slightly quicker 8.90/153.06.Qualified #7 at NHRA Seattle at 8.862/153.84. Beat Jean Batteux in round one, 8.93/152 to 9.50, but lost to Larry Lombardo in round two, 8.84/152 to 8.97/151. A good showing at the team's only NHRA national event this year.

Notes: Don qualified well at Pomona for the Winternationals with the 8.852/153.32 (using a unique Doug Nash clutchless 5-speed transmission). In round one, he beat Kevin Rotty, 9.26/146.81 to 9.31/146. In round two, Dave Kanners fouled away an 8.87/153, and Don progressed with a 9.03/153.58. In the semifinals, Wayne Gapp's 8.87/153 beat his off pace 9.30/135.74. At the Gatornationals, an 8.843/153.32 qualified #9, setting up a first-round meeting with low qualifier Larry Lombardo in Bill Jenkins' Monza. Larry won that first-round battle, 8.77/155 to a 12-second shutoff. Nicholson went to Atlanta on May 23 for the IHRA Dixie Nationals, where he lasted until the semifinal before his 8.91 lost to Roy Hill's 8.88. Don failed to qualify at the NHRA Springnationals as the Fords were at a severe weight disadvantage in NHRA racing, and his 9.267/148.02 was the third alternate. Don was spending a lot more time match racing to make ends meet. At the NHRA Summernationals at Englishtown, Don chose to run the car as a C/Altered in the competition class rather than run it in Pro Stock. He did not enter another NHRA national event in 1976. Don was back at Gainesville for the Turkey Trot Nationals near the end of the year. He qualified #1 for the eight-car show with an 8.76 (Low ET) at 152.80. In the opening round, his 8.92/150.50 beat Tony Wood's 9.18/151 in the former Reid Whisnant Duster and another 8.76 at 153.58 (Top Speed) beat Pat Ulik's Hornet at 9.18/146. But Unfortunately, Don had a little nap in the final, and his 9.04/150.00 lost to Lamar Walden's 9.12/148.

Notes: Don built this car to take advantage of better weight break for long-wheelbase cars. It also had a unique Doug Nash clutchless 5-speed. At Pomona, Don qualified #8 at 8.852/153.32. He beat Kevin Rotty in round one, 8.250/146.81 to a fouling 9.31/146. Don then took out Dave Kanners in round two, 9.03/153.58 to a wasted 8.87/153.06 when Dave redlighted. Wayne Gapp defeated him in the semis, 8.87/153 to Don's off pace 9.30/135.74. Don qualified #9 at Gainesville with an 8.843/153.32. Larry Lombardo beat him in round one, 8.77/155 to a 12-second shutoff. Don had a bad outing at Columbus, ending up as the third alternate at 9.267/148.02. That was Don's last NHRA national event of the year.

Notes: Andy lent this car to Wally Booth to compete at the Winters, but he got it back after Wally's AMC deal came through. Andy raced it into early 1977 before forming the M&M Boys with Dick Maskin. In November, Mannarino qualified #4 at Suffolk for the Little Guy National Open with an 8.83/153.06. In the opening round, an 8.90/151.51 beat John Theofiles' 9.02/150. In the semi-final, his 8.89/151.77 lost to Pat Musi's 8.79/153. He did not drive at any NHRA national events this year. Andy sold this car to Fred (Shafer?) BORT = AKA Balls Out Racing Team! Notes: Hansen started the season by winning the Irwindale Grand Premiere race. It was an eight-car show, and his 9.02 qualified #5. Everyone, including Gary, probably thought he would lose to low qualifier (8.79) Roy Hill in the first round. But Hill fouled, and Hansen advanced. In the semifinals, his 9.04 beat another fouling Mopar—-the Duster of Randy Humphrey, who ran 8.97 in the loss. In the final, he faced the #6 qualifier, Mark Yuill. Gary downed him with a 9.07/147, while Yuill followed at 9.15/145. He was at Beeline Dragway for the Phoenix Winter Classic, where he qualified #9. That spot earned him the right to race low qualifier Warren Johnson in the first round. It wasn't much of a race, as Johnson's 8.89/153 easily covered Gary's 9.24/148.76. He qualified #5 for the eight-car field at the Bakersfield March Meet. But his opening round 9.05/148.76 lost to Larry Huff's 8.91/152. Shortly after that, Ontario Motor Speedway held an eight-car show. He qualified #6, and in round one, the eventual winner Dick Landy's 8.89/153 trailered the little Vega's 9.14/150. On May 8th, Gary was at OCIR for the NHRA Division Seven race. Humphrey fouled against him in the first round, and in the semifinal, he was late off the line, and his 9.00 lost to Kevin Rotty's 9.09. In mid-July, he was at Sacramento for its Fox Hunt race. It was an eight-car show, and in round one, he made an easy solo when Ken Tucker broke. He ran a great 8.90/151 in the semifinal, but it wasn't enough, as he lost to eventual winner Dick Landy's 8.87/153. Gary qualified #8 at NHRA Seattle at 8.881/151.26. He beat Mike Rendell in round one, 8.93/150.75 to 9.30/144.23. He lost to Warren Johnson in round two, 8.77/154.63 to 9.11/149.25. Gary qualified #13 at Ontario for the NHRA World Finals with an 8.977/151.26. He fouled against Richie Zul in the first round, who ran 8.914/152.28 to beat Gary's 9.051/150.75.

Notes: Also ran 8.969 at Gainesville Raceway. | This team was tough. Given more time, they would have been major contenders. But Jon Kaase was hired away by "Dyno Don" Nicholson at the end of the year and Don went on to become the '77 NHRA Pro Stock World Champion. Ford's 8.96 at the NHRA Gatornationals qualified #14. In the opening round of eliminations, his 8.99/150.00 lost to Roy Hill's 8.80/155. The team was at Miami-Hollywood for the IHRA Winternationals but the car broke against Bob Glidden in the first round. Larry Ford drove the Pinto to Low ET at Bristol for the IHRA All-American Nationals in September with an 8.65. He made it into the final only to lose to Bob Glidden.

Notes: Photo from the 1976 NHRA Gatornationals, Gainesville, Florida. | Rivera started his season at Tucson in January for the AHRA Winternationals, where he qualified #7 in the sixteen-car field. He ran well, lasting until the semifinals before losing to Lee Edwards' 8.94/150 with an ailing 9.69/128.02. At the Phoenix Winter Classic, he qualified #8 with a 9.09, but it lost to Larry Sengstack in round one, when he fouled(9.26/150). His next stop was at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. A 9.02 qualified #14, but his 9.05/152.28 lost to Wayne Gapp's 8.86/153 in the opening round. Gordie qualified #16 at 8.9966/152.80 at the Ontario World Finals. He lost in round one, to Paul Blevins, 8.90 to 9.028/152.80.

Notes: Lamar was at Desoto on April 11 for the NHRA Division Two race. He qualified #2 with a 9.04/150.75. While that sounded great, the problem was, Wally Booth qualified #1 with an 8.75/155. These two would make their way into the final, where it wasn't much of a contest. Lamar tried hard, but his 9.10/150.75 was no match for the AMC's 8.77/154.

Notes: We need to confirm that this car was run in 1976. It did not run on the NHRA tour. When did the team sell it?

Notes: Shay was at Phoenix on January 25 for the Winter Classic. She qualified #1, but her 9.26/147.54 in the opening round fell to eventual winner Larry Lombardo's 8.87/153. An 8.994/151.51 at the Pomona Winternationals was the first eight-second run recorded by a woman. Shay qualified #13 but lost to Richie Zul in round one, 8.90/151 to 9.12/150. That was her last NHRA national event of the year. Shay also ran 8.99/150 at NHRA D4 LaPlace LA in march. Was that 8.99 quicker than the 8.994 at Pomona? RH | Shay finished second in Division 4 Pro Stock points (behind only Shelby Jester) in 1976. Did she retire in 76 or 77?
