Notes: AHRA Pro Stock Champion in 75/76. Comp number #1005 in AHRA. Dondero raced the Vega for Jenkins in '74 and '75 then a Monza in '76, totally dominating AHRA Pro Stock. For sale ad in April 1975 offered this car turn-key with the 354-inch motor that set the AHRA world record at 8.76/157.03 at NHRA legal weight. Confirmed 8.85 at West Salem, Ohio. | Ken was at OCIR on March 16 for the AHRA Grand American West. He qualified #1 with an 8.85 and then ran a solo 8.90/154.37 in round one. Dondero improved to an 8.79 AHRA record at 155.17 in round two to beat Lee Hunter. An 8.82 in the semifinals beat Gordie Rivera and moved him into the final against Gary Hansen. Ken got the win as well as the other end of the AHRA record with an 8.83/156.79 over Gary's 9.23. He won the next AHRA race as well, the Southwest Grand American at Tulsa. A 9.06/152.54 qualified #1, and he reached the final where he faced the second qualifier, Larry Huff. The Vega ran a consistent 9.08/152.28 in the final to beat Huff's 9.13/151. The AHRA victories continued at the Grandnationals at Dragway 42 in May. Of course, Ken qualified #1 with an 8.85 (Low ET) at 154.10. He only needed to run 9.10 in round one, to beat Jim Halloran while a 9.00 in the semifinals beat Dave Kanners' quicker 8.93. This put Dondero in the final against Joe Satmary's big-block Camaro. An 8.94/154.90 by the Vega in the final was more than enough to beat Satmary's 9.12/153 for the title.

Notes: Photo from the 1975 NHRA Springnationals, National Trail Raceway, Columbus, Ohio. ET from a match race event in November, not from the Ontario World Finals in October. | Landy was at Beeline for the AHRA Winternationals, but he had the misfortune of qualifying #9. That was bad because it forced him to run low qualifier Bob Glidden in the first round. It didn't go well for Landy as his 9.22 lost to Glidden's 8.97. He did not run at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals.

Notes: Photo of car in C/G trim. | Bob Glidden ran his "new" '70 Mustang at both the AHRA and NHRA Winternationals (winning both), but at the IHRA Winternationals at Miami-Hollywood, he was running his "trusty" Pinto. It turned out pretty well for him. He qualified #1 for the eight-car field with an 8.73 and then ran a best of 8.70 during eliminations to reach the final against Wayne Gapp who had also switched from his 4-door Maverick to a Pinto for this race. Gapp had also been running 8 70s so it was going to be a good final. Unfortunately, Glidden got out of shape in the final and had to shut off while Gapp ran 8.70 for the victory. Bob then switched back to his '70 Mustang to win the NHRA Gatornationals. After that, he had all kinds of problems attempting to sort out his new Mustang II. He switched back and forth between the two Mustangs and the Pinto sat. In July, the car was sold to Clyde Brandon and Gene Turnage. In the meantime, he bought Lou Oleynik's "Hauler" Mustang II that had been driven by Herb McCandless. The '70 Mustang was also sold to Larry Sengstack. With all the car shuffling supposedly out of the way, he concentrated on the new Mustang II. He did alright with the car, winning the fourth NHRA Division 3 race, but it didn't respond to changes as well as some of his other cars. The wins were definitely not coming like they were earlier in the year. So, after the NHRA US Nationals, he borrowed back the Pinto he had sold to Brandon and Turnage and ran it at the final NHRA Division 3 race at Bowling Green. It proved to be a wise decision as he had been in a slump and his points lead had dwindled. This car most likely gave him his NHRA Championship. At the Bowling Green event, he qualified #2 in the eight-car field with an 8.85 behind Gapp's Maverick at 8.80. Bob improved to an 8.82/154.10 in the opening round over a fouling Norm Paddack. In the semifinal, Sam Gianino also fouled against him and his 8.88/154.10 moved into a final round showdown with Gapp. It was a close race, but Bob's 8.90/154.63 (Top Speed) got the win over the Maverick's close 8.91/153. A deal was struck between Glidden and Brandon & Turnage and Bob continued to use the car for the rest of the year. At the NHRA Fallnationals, the car still ran with the Brandon and Turnage lettering. Bob really showed them there. He reset both ends of the NHRA National record to 8.72/156.25 in qualifying #1. Only fifteen cars showed for the sixteen-car field so he made an "odd-lot" solo in round one, and ran 8.87/152.58. A second round 8.95/153.84 beat Gary Coe and in the semifinals, Ken Dondero's 8.93/152 in Bill Jenkins' Monza fell to Glidden's 8.87/154.90. It was another Gapp vs.5 Glidden final and like all their finals, it was close. Glidden’s 8.84/155.44 got the win over Gapp's 8.85/153.

Notes: Bob built this 1970 Mustang to take advantage of a weight break for longer wheelbase machines. Set National Record at Pomona Winters at 8.772, then Gainesville at 8.76. The 156.25 was Top Speed of the meet at the Winters. Won Winters with a holeshot 8.79 over Wayne Gapp's 8.78. | After watching the success Gapp and Roush were having with their four-door Maverick, Bob had Don Hardy build him this '70 Mustang for '75. The Mustang was allowed to weigh less than the Pinto due to the NHRA weight breaks for long-wheelbase cars. The first time out for the car was at Beeline for the AHRA Winternationals. Bob set Low ET and Top Speed in qualifying #1 with an 8.96/153.84. He then beat Dick Landy in the first round, with an 8.97, followed by a solo 9.29 in round two when Don Nicholson shut off on the line. In the semifinals, a 9.02/150.50 took care of Kevin Rotty. In the final, he faced Wally Booth's Hornet. Booth was off by more than a tenth in eliminations, and it stayed that way in the final. Glidden's 8.99/152.28 beat Wally's 9.12/149. It was a great debut, but it was about to get better. Glidden and family towed to Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, where he qualified #2 with an 8.82/154.37 behind Wayne Gapp's "Taxi" at 8.81/154. These two would work their way to the final. Bob beat Pete Kost in the first round with an 8.772/156.25. The ET was a new NHRA record. In round two, he backed it up with an 8.781/153.32 over Nicholson's similar '70 Mustang. A semifinal 8.821/153.84 took out Dave Kanners' 8.90. The two long-wheelbase Fords came to the final, and Bob got a slight holeshot, and his 8.797/154.10 held on for the win over Gapp's 8.781/154. At the IHRA Winternationals, Glidden used his Pinto as IHRA did not have a different weight break for long or short-wheelbase cars. Glidden made it three event wins in a row for the new car when he won the NHRA Gatornationals. He set a new NHRA ET record of 8.760 in qualifying. His speed on the run was 154.63 (Top Speed). Gapp qualified #2, and these two again would work their way into the final. Bob beat Mike Fons' Mopar in the first round, with an 8.96, while a second round 8.86 advanced when Bobby Yowell fouled. In the semifinals, Larry Lombardo, driving Bill Jenkins' Vega, fouled away an 8.89/153, while Glidden sailed into the final with an 8.97/151.77. Bob got a great light in the final while Gapp was late, and Glidden got the victory with an 8.96/152.80 over the Maverick's quicker 8.89 at the same speed. During April, Glidden also debuted a new Mustang II. He had a lot of bad luck with the car and ended up crashing it at Columbus. He was OK, but the car was severely damaged. Because of this, Bob was at the NHRA Division 3 Opener at Indianapolis on April 20 with the '70 Mustang. He set Low ET in qualifying #1 with an 8.72. He also set Top Speed and won the event, beating Floyd Williams in the final. Bob ran the car at the NHRA Springnationals on June 8. He qualified #4 with a 9.02/150.25. Bob's 8.94/151.77 beat Lee Edwards' Camaro in the first round. In round two, he fell off to 9.34 and lost to Roy Hill's 9.13. He was alternating cars as he used a Mustang II at Bristol for the IHRA Springnationals, yet the following week (June 29), he was back in the '70 Mustang for the third NHRA Division 3 race at Edgewater. He set Low ET in qualifying #1 with an 8.86, and in round one, he also got Top Speed honors with an 8.88/153.58 drubbing of Charlie Reed's 9.18/145. A semifinal 8.90/150.25 beat Stacy Shields' Mustang II and moved Glidden into the final against Sam Gianino. Unfortunately for Bob, the car broke, and Gianino soloed for the win. It was hard to follow Glidden's cars in '75 as he then used the Mustang II at Union Grove for the IHRA Summernationals. I believe the last race Bob used the car at was the NHRA Summernationals at Englishtown. He blew up an engine during qualifying on Saturday but put a new one in and ran 8.99/153.06 to qualify #7. It was really surprising that he fouled away an 8.97/152.54 against Bert Straus in the opening round. Shortly after this, Bob sold the car to Larry Sengstack.

Notes: Also 8.90 at 1975 at Martin and Tri-City WCS. Also, 152.54 at West Salem 75. | The Maskin and Kanners Hornet was half of AMC's Pro Stock effort along with Wally Booth. The two ran well in '75 but nothing near as well as they would in '76. At Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, Dave qualified #4 with an 8.871/152.80 just in front of Booth's 8.92/151. Kanners ran well, running 8.92 and 8.95 to reach the semifinals, where he faced Bob Glidden's "new" '70 Mustang. Dave's 8.90 was strong, but Glidden's stronger 8.82 got the win. At Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals, Kanners again was the stronger of the two AMC cars in qualifying. His 8.90/152.02 got the #4 spot for the show. He beat Roy Hill's Duster in the first round, with an 8.98 and another 8.98 in round two beat Ron Hutter's surprising Vega at 9.07. In the semifinals, he faced the Gapp and Roush Maverick. Gapp had been running 8.8's in eliminations, and his performance advantage held in the semifinals, where Dave's 8.95/151 fell to Gapp's 8.91/153. The two AMC teams shared information, and Booth-Arons built a lot of the engine parts. They shared input from test sessions, but early in '75, the two teams drifted apart when Dave started trying different combinations using Diamond Racing Engines to do their research and development. Dave was at Dragway 42 in May for the AHRA Grandnationals. He qualified #3 with an 8.90/155.97 while Booth was a little farther back in the #6 spot. Both lasted until the semifinals of the eight-car show. Dave's 8.93 lost to a holeshot 9.00 front Ken Dondero driving Bill Jenkins' Vega. Dave won the NHRA Divisional race at Suffolk. He beat Lee Edwards in the final with an 8.95/149. Dave was at Thunder Valley in Marion, SD, for the NHRA Division 5 race in June. He won that as well with a final round 9.22/147.54 over a fouling Warren Johnson. At the NHRA Springnationals, his 8.99/149.00 qualified #2. Unfortunately, he was late in the first round, and his 9.04/150.75 lost to Richie Zul's 9.11/150. Dave ran his best NHRA times of the year at Indy, qualifying #4 at 8.870/153.32 and making it to round 3, where eventual runner-up Richie Zul won an 8.95 to 8.96 decision.

Notes: First Pro Stock with struts built by SRD. | From mid-'73 until the NHRA rulebook caught up to them at the end of the '75 season, the Ford's owned Pro Stock competition. A lot of finals saw just two blue oval cars racing for the title. Chevy lovers had this man to root for. Jenkins was by far the strongest Chevy campaigner during this time. The '75 season was no different. He showed up at Pomona running a dry sump oiling system. In qualifying, his 8.84/154.90 was #3 behind the Fords of Wayne Gapp and Bob Glidden. Bill’s opening round 8.87/155.44 beat alternate Mickey Mills' 9.25/145 and he ran 8.80/155.44 (again) in round two to beat Scott Shafiroff who had just switched from a Chevy to a Ford. Jenkins' speed was a new NHRA record. He faced yet another Ford in the semifinals, this time it was low qualifier, Gapp’s new four-door Maverick. Bill must have been a little concerned about the car as he fouled against him. As it turned out, Wayne had clutch problems on the run and Jenkins probably would have won. It was also probably because of his light at Pomona that he let Larry Lombardo drive his car at the NHRA Gatornationals. Larry qualified third behind the same two Fords and ironically, he fouled against Glidden in the semifinals. Bill was back behind the wheel for a best of three match race against Gapp at Cayuga. Things didn't go his way as he lost three straight with a best of 8.89/152.02. At the NHRA Springnationals, of course, Bill qualified #3 with a 9.01/150.75, but this time only Gapp's Ford was ahead of him. Dave Kanners slipped his Hornet into the #2 spot. Bill started eliminations with a 9.04/151.00 over Charlie Reed while a second round 9.03/150.50 beat Wally Booth's 9.09/149. In the semifinals, his 9.01 beat future superstar Warren Johnson's 9.08 and moved him into the final against Roy Hill. Jenkins was the favorite as Hill qualified #16 and was at least a tenth off the pace and it showed in the final where the "Grump's" 8.98/152.28 got the victory over Hill's 9.16/149. Jenkins moved up a spot in qualifying at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals. His 8.92/152.02 was second to Gapp's 8.89/152. These two would meet in the final. Bill started by running an 8.97/152.80 over Larry Huff's 9.15. A round two 8.92/154.63 beat Johnson's 9.11/149 and in the semifinals his 8.94/152.54 advanced when Shafiroff's Mustang II broke. Bill tried really hard in the final as he must have left a dent in the floorboard by the gas pedal. His 8.93/154.90 (Top Speed) lost to Gapp's 8.80/154.63. He was at Maryland soon after that, for the US Pro Stock Open. Bill set Low ET in the first round, with an 8.83 that beat Pat Musi. But in round two the car broke while beating Bob Ingles and he was unable to return for the semifinal. He expected his new Monza to be ready for the NHRA Grandnationals and he had sold both his Vegas. Unfortunately, the Monza was not done and Jenkins had to skip the Grandnationals as he had no car to race. The new Monza debuted in time for the PHR Championships later in August.

Notes: Don ran this car at a weight break for long-wheelbase cars. With few Ford choices at that wheelbase, he (and Bob Glidden and a few others) went back to the 1970 body style. "Dyno Don" was at Beeline for the AHRA Winternationals. He qualified #5 and lasted until the second round, where he faced Bob Glidden's similar '70 Mustang. Glidden won their race and went on to win the event. At Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, the exact same thing happened. Nicholson qualified #6 with an 8.959/152.28. A first-round 9.001/153.32 advanced when Doug Wood fouled away a 9.27/148, but once again, he ran into Glidden in the second round. The results were the same, with Don's 9.021/150.75 losing to Bob's 8.78/153. Once again, Glidden would go on to win. Don raced his Mustang II at Gainesville and Columbus but returned with the Mustang at Englishtown. He qualified #6 at 8.960/151.51. A Warren Johnson holeshot ended his day in round one, 9.08/150 to Don's 8.99/152.54. Don qualified #2 at Indy with an 8.839 at the Top Speed of the Meet at 155.32. He beat Jerry Haas in round one, 8.942/150.50 to 9.03/148, and Kenny Hahn in round two, 8.930/150.75 to 9.17/147. Don got the best of Bob Glidden in an excellent third-round matchup, 8.99/151.00 to 9.05/150. Unfortunately, Don's Mustang broke in the semis, sending Richie Zul to an 8.97/151 win. Don skipped Seattle but raced at the World Finals. An 8.986/150.25 qualified #8. He lost to Jack Schorr in a first-round upset, 9.06/148 to 9.159/152.03.

And 151.26 at AHRA West Salem 75. | Newspaper from Ontario 10/12/75 cites Woodland Hills (LA) as the hometown. We need to confirm. | Huff had one of the quickest Pro Stock Mopars in '75. He started the season at Beeline for the AHRA Winternationals, where he lasted until the semifinals before he fouled against Wally Booth. The NHRA weight breaks were unkind to the Hemi-powered cars, but Larry went to Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals and ran 9.04/150.75 to qualify #9. He was the quickest Mopar in the field, but in qualifying where he did, he faced the low qualifier, Wayne Gapp, in the first round. Gapp's four-door Maverick was tough, and sure enough, Larry's 9.16/148.51 didn't stand a chance against Gapp's 8.81/154. He had to choose between going to the NHRA Gatornationals or the AHRA Grand American West at OCIR since they both ran on March 16. He must have been tempted to go to the NHRA race since NHRA issued new lighter weight breaks for the Hemi-powered cars, but Huff was the strip manager for OCIR, so he had to race at his own track. Only 13 cars showed for the sixteen-car Pro Stock field at OCIR, and Huff qualified #2 with an 8.95. He made his way to the semifinals with a best of 9.15/152.54 before losing to Gary Hansen. Shortly after this, Huff quit running OCIR, and the track sat idle until Bill Doner took over. He did find out just how well the Hemi ran with the new NHRA weight breaks at Seattle during the Northwest National Open. Larry qualified #1 with an 8.77/154.10. He then ran times of 8.83 and 8.91 to win the event. It was a strong showing for a Mopar under NHRA rules. On May 4, he was at Tulsa for the AHRA Southwest Grand American. A 9.07/152.28 qualified #2 in the eight-car field, and he beat Warren Johnson in the semifinals with a 9.09. This put him into the final against Ken Dondero, driving one of Bill Jenkins' Vegas. Ken got the win with a 9.08/152 over Huff's runner-up 9.13/151.77. At the fourth AHRA Grand American race, the Grandnationals at Dragway 42, Huff again qualified #2 with an 8.86/155.17. Unfortunately, he was upset in the first round, by Booth's AMC. His next good showing came at Bristol for the IHRA Springnationals, where he ran 8.99 to qualify #4. He ran 9.01 and 9.08 twice to reach the final, where he faced Scott Shafiroff's wounded Mustang II. Scott's motor had been hurting for the last few rounds. In the final, Huff fouled, and Scott still ran 8.99/150 to win. At the NHRA Springnationals, Larry qualified #6 with a 9.03/150.25. He was the quickest of the four Mopars that made the field. Huff beat Dick Landy's 9.16 in the first round, with a 9.05, but in round two, he lost a close one to Richie Zul when both ran 9.07 (Huff at 150.25), but the Camaro got the win light. He won the NHRA Division 4 race at Oklahoma City. There he qualified #1 with a 9.14/148.02. An even better 9.11/148.51 beat Lynn Harrison's 9.35/144 in round one, and a semifinal 9.12/149 took out Fred Shafer's 9.23/144. He faced the AMC of Dave Kanners in the final, and Dave had just set Low ET with his semifinal 9.09. It was a good race with Huff getting out on Kanners and holding on to take a 9.18/147.29 victory over Dave's quicker and faster,9.12/148. His next stop was at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals. Once again, four Mopars qualified. Larry's 9.05/150.00 qualified #10. In the first round, his 9.15/130.05 lost to Bill Jenkins' 8.97/152. This was followed by a trip to Minnesota for the third NHRA Division Five race. Larry's 9.24/146.57 was upset by Tom Haller's 9.17/146 in the opening round of competition. Early in August, he competed at the AHRA Drag Nationals held at Kansas City International. He lasted until the semifinals before his 9.12 lost to Johnson's 9.10. Huff had the quicker Mopar at Martin, Michigan, for the PHR Championships. His 9.05 got him the #10 spot in the field. That didn't do much, as Bill Jenkins' 8.90 in his new Monza stopped his 9.12 in the opening round.

Notes: AKA the Juana Taxi. Four-door long-wheelbase car had 100 lb. weight advantage. Ran 8.78 at Winters after qualifying #1 at 8.81. Lost final round to a Glidden holeshot, 8.79 to Wayne's 8.78. Ran 8.94/153.06 at IHRA Bristol June 1975. Was that in this car or the Mustang II? Won Indy 1975 over Zul in this car. | Gapp continued to run his trick four-door Maverick into '75. The season started at Beeline for the AHRA Winternationals in January Gapp's 8.97 qualified #2 behind Bob Glidden's 8.96. Unfortunately, Wayne fouled in the first round, against Joe Satmary. At Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, an 8.81/154.37 qualified #1, just in front of Glidden's 8.82. These two would work their way to the finals. In early Sunday morning time trials, Wayne improved to 8.79. No one else was able to run 8.7's that morning as the closest was Glidden's 8.81. Gapp's first-round 8.81/154.63 beat Larry Huff's Mopar at 9.16/148. A second-round 8.89/154.37 took out Wally Booth's 8.98/152 and in the semifinals, he almost lost with clutch problems. His opponent, Bill Jenkins, helped out by fouling. This put the two long-wheelbase Fords in the final. It was as close as it could get as Gapp's 8.78/154.37 lost by inches to Bob's slower 8.79/154. These same two would qualify one-two at the NHRA Gatornationals with Glidden's 8.76 leading Gapp's 8.76/153.84. Once again, they would meet in the final. Gapp beat Kenny Hahn in the first round, with an 8.88/152.54 and in round two his 8.87 advanced when Reid Whisnant fouled. He slowed to 8.91/153 in the semifinals, but it was still enough to beat Dave Kanners' AMC at 8.95/151. Once again, the two long-wheelbase cars squared off. And again, the results were the same. They both ran 152.80, but Glidden was sharp on the lights and his 8.96 beat Gapp's quicker 8.89. The NHRA Division 4 Opener was held at LaPlace and the "Taxi" dominated the event. Gapp qualified #1 with an 8.95 (Low ET) and ran 8.98 twice to reach the final. Kelly Chadwick was his final round opponent and a 9.06/150 got the victory over Chadwick's 9.23/146. In match races and at the IHRA Winternationals, the Gapp and Roush team used a Pinto, but at the IHRA World Nationals at Amarillo in April, Gapp was in the Maverick. He set Low ET and Top Speed and in the final, he faced Don Nicholson. Gapp ran an 8.76 to get the victory over "Dyno's" 8.85. The Pinto was used for the next couple of IHRA events before Gapp was back behind the wheel at the NHRA Springnationals. He set Low ET of the meet in qualifying #1 with an 8.94/151.51. (For a change, Glidden was not second; Kanners’ Hornet was at 8.99). Mike Fons fouled against him in the first round, and Wayne advanced with a 9.01/151.00. In the second round, Warren Johnson got a great light and his 9.13/149 held on to win over the Maverick's quicker 9.10/149.25. The car’s next outing was at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals. Gapp qualified #1 with an 8.89/152.28 and then ran 8.96/152.62 to beat Roy Hill's 8.99/152 in the first round. A second-round 9.03/150.00 beat the Pontiac Astre of Bert Straus at 9.18/151. In the semifinals, he picked up the pace to an 8.84/153.32 over Kanners. That put him into the final against Jenkins. Gapp capped off the weekend by setting Low ET with an 8.80 at 154.63 to win over Jenkins' 8.93/154. Another win came at the NHRA Grandnationals in Canada. Again, Gapp was low in qualifying with an 8.98. His times kept improving with an 8.94/153.06 in the first round, to trailer Sam Gianino. He ran a solo in round two and recorded an 8.93/149.53. Richie Zul fouled against him in the semifinals and Gapp set Low ET with an 8.86/150.00. He faced Kanners in the final and an 8.91/152.28 got him the victory over Kanners' 9.00/151. On August 16, Gapp was driving the Maverick at Maryland International for the fourth NHRA Division 1 race. He beat Booth in the final with an 8.90/147.05 to the AMC's 8.97/149. At the PHR Championships, Gapp wasn't one of the top two qualifiers. He was back in the #4 spot with an 8.89. This was unusual, but what was even more unusual was his first-round race against Larry Ford. Gapp ran 8.97/151.51 and lost to Larry's 9.25/144! That was more than a little snooze on the line. But that trailed the Maverick in the first round. Gapp made up for it at Indy for the NHRA US Nationals. He qualified #3 with an 8.85, and he made his way to the semifinals of the 32 car field where he faced a strong running Booth. Booth had reset the NHRA Pro Stock record to 8.75 in qualifying #1. Wally must have been a little nervous facing Gapp, and he fouled away an 8.80 while Wayne motored into the final with an 8.87. In the final, he ran Zul's big-block Camaro. Zul ran 8.95/151, but Gapp took the victory with an 8.83/153.32. At this point in the season, the points chase seemed to be between Gapp and Booth. Shortly after Indy, the final NHRA Division 3 race was held at Bowling Green Kentucky. Gapp qualified #1 and made it to the final against Glidden. Any time these two ran, it was bound to be close and this was no exemption. Gapp's 8.91/153.58 finished runner-up to Bob's 8.90/154. The following week, NHRA was at Seattle for the Fallnationals. The end of the season was starting to look like it had in the beginning, with Glidden and Gapp qualifying one-two. Gapp's 8.748/154.90 qualified behind Bob's new NHRA record 8.72. Of course, these two would meet in the final. Mardy Maltais fouled against Gapp in the first round, and a 9.99/104.04 advanced into round two. This was not so easy as the Maverick lost an engine on the run and the team swapped in another one for round two. There, Gapp's 8.83/153.06 beat Lee Hunter's 9.01/151. In the semifinals, Huff fouled against him and an 8.90-51.77 moved into the final. Bob was starting to eat his way back into the points race and his final 8.84/155 beat Wayne's close 8.85/153.06.

Notes: Scott won the IHRA Spring Nationals at Bristol with a best of 8.90 at 150.25. Went through eliminations with a cracked block. He defeated Phil Nichols, Wayne Gapp, Lee Edwards, and finally Larry Huff in the final with an 8.99/150.25. Scott ran 8.94 at NHRA Englishtown 1975. He was runner-up to a Don Nicholson holeshot at IHRA Union Grove, 9.01/149.00 to Scott's 8.98/150.50. Runner up at Maryland International Raceway US Pro Stock Open 7/75. | Scott Shafiroff made a huge leap from running a strong Chevy Pro Stock Vega in '74 to switching to this Ford Mustang II for '75. After the season he had, it seemed like he made the right choice. Right off the bat, the car was a contender. At Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, he qualified #7 with a 9.00/151.51. An opening round 9.01/150 beat Kenny Hahn's Duster at 9.18/148, but he lost to Bill Jenkins in round two. At the NHRA Gatornationals, he picked up even more on the pack running an 8.90 to qualify #5. But Shafiroff attempted to run an even better number to move up the chart, but the rear end tore out from the car while making his burnout. First alternate Bobby Yowell took his place in the field. After getting the car repaired, Scott ran the Mustang II, which was 50 lbs lighter than NHRA's weight, and ran an impressive 8.70. Scott was anxious to get back into competition. In April, he was at Cecil County's National Open where the car set both Low ET and Top Speed, but broke before eliminations. Things finally clicked his way at the NHRA Division 1 race at Englishtown. There, he won with a final round of 8.88/153.06. Shafiroff did a lot of match racing with the car and was very successful with it. At the NHRA Springnationals, 34 cars attempted to qualify for the sixteen-car field, and Scott's 9.02/151.26 qualified #5. He was late off the line in the first round, and his 9.11/147.29 lost to Warren Johnson's 9.18/148. Shortly after, he won over an eight-car field at Empire Dragway in New York. He set Low ET in the final with a 9.02 over Ronnie Manchester's 9.19. His biggest win of the year came at the IHRA Springnationals at Bristol. He ran 8.98, 8.99, and 8.99 over a fouling Lee Edwards in the semifinals to reach the final against Larry Huff. Larry knew that Scott was running with a wounded motor, but he also saw that he was still running a tenth faster than his Dodge. So, Huff took a chance on the 'tree and fouled while Scott ran yet another 8.99 at 150 for his first IHRA national event win. He also made it two in a row in IHRA competition when he reached the final at the IHRA Summernationals at Union Grove, but his final round 9.01 finished runner-up to "Dyno Don" Nicholson's 8.98 in an all-Ford final. The car kept improving at the NHRA national events, and at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals, Shafiroff's 8.94/153.58 was now up to #3 on the qualifying list. His speed was also tops among the qualifiers. Scott looked strong in eliminations. An opening round 8.96/153.84 advanced when Sam Gianino fouled, and in round two, he beat Charlie Castaldo with an 8.95/154.63. He went up against Jenkins in the semifinals, and the car let him down, breaking on the pass and slowing to a 10.14/99.55 loss against Jenkins' 8.94/152. His next stop was at the US Pro Stock Open held at Budds Creek. Once again, the Mustang II was flying. He ran 8.96, 8.93, and 8.99 in the semifinals over a fouling Richie Zul. His final-round opponent was Roy Hill in his Duster. Roy had not been running quite as well as Scott had, hitting a best of 8.98 in eliminations, but a final round 8.97/151 beat Scott's 8.99/150.25 for the win. Photo from the 1975 NHRA Gatornationals, Gainesville, Florida. Scott is in the photo wearing the brown coat standing behind the car.

Notes: Won 75 IHRA All American Nationals at Bristol. Also 8.83 at Ontario 75. Low qualifier at Indy 1975 at 8.752/152.54. | Booth's season started at Beeline for the AHRA Winternationals. He ran 9.18 in the first round, over Rich Simone's Mustang II and in round two, a 9.17 beat Joe Satmary's 9.27. A 9.11/149.50 wasn't needed in the semifinals when Larry Huff fouled, but it put Booth in the final against Bob Glidden who had debuted his new '70 Mustang. Wally tried hard with a 9.12/149.25, but was still left behind Glidden's 8.99/152. At Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, Booth qualified #5 with an 8.92/151.77. He lasted until the second round before losing to Wayne Gapp's 8.89/154 with an 8.98/152.28. The next NHRA event was the Gatornationals held on March 16. Wally didn't qualify very well as his 8.98 put him in the #11 spot. This set up a first-round meeting with Larry Lombardo that the Hornet lost. During this, Dick Arons was working hard on the cylinder heads, lopping off and sectioning the heads for more power and as the season progressed the results were showing. In April, Wally won the NHRA Division 2 Opener at Warner Robins. He qualified #1 with an 8.95 and went into the final against Reid Whisnant where his 9.05/149.50 beat Reid's 9.06/152. In May he was at Dragway 42 for the AHRA Grandnationals. He qualified #6 in the eight-car show and got around Huff in the first round, before fouling away a 9.03 in the semifinal against Satmary's 9.15. At the NHRA Springnationals, a 9.06/149.00 qualified #7. In the first round, a 9.11/149.25 beat Satmary's 9.19/147. In round two, a 9.09/149.75 lost to Bill Jenkins' 9.03/150. At Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals, he qualified #11 with a 9.07. A first-round 9.06/149.75 lost to the "other" Hornet driver, Dave Kanners, who ran 9.02/150. Wally won the AHRA Drag Nationals at Kansas City on August 3. He beat Fred Shafer's Vega in the first round, with a 9.09 and another 9.09 in the semifinals beat Floyd Williams. In the final, he met Warren Johnson and the Hornet's 9.08/148.51 got the win over the Camaro's 9.13/149. Maryland International hosted the fourth NHRA Division 1 race on August 16, and Wally made it into the final where his 8.97/149.75 finished second best to Gapp's 8.90/147. The following week (August 24), he was at Martin, Michigan, for the PHR Championships. He qualified #6 with an 8.95 and improved to a first-round 8.92 over Paul Davis. Unfortunately, he fouled in round two against Shafer. Booth showed that the cylinder head work was paying off as he set a new NHRA record in qualifying #1 at the US Nationals with an 8.75. He lasted until the semifinals where he fouled away an 8.80 against eventual winner Gapp's 8.87. He then went to Rockingham for the IHRA US Open and proved that his times were no fluke. He qualified #1 with an 8.86 and a first-round 8.85/153.32 beat Charlie Castaldo. In round two, an 8.82/154.10 beat Fred Turner. In the semifinals, he kept the pressure on with another 8.82/153.32 over a fouling Scott Shafiroff. In the final, he was to have faced Lee Edwards' Camaro, but Lee had broken a timing chain in his semifinal run so Booth got to make a solo for the win. What a solo it was, as he ran Low ET and Top Speed with an 8.81/154.37 for the title. It was a strong showing for the little Hornet. At the NHRA Division 2 final at DeSoto Speedway, Wally set Low ET at 8.97, but in the final he decided to take a little nap and his 9.00/150.50 lost to Johnny Dowey's 9.24/145. At the NHRA World Finals, he qualified #3 with an 8.83/152.80, but he lost in the first round.

Notes: Also ran 8.97/150.75 in reaching the semis at IHRA Bristol June 1975. | At the IHRA Winternationals at Miami-Hollywood, Hill qualified #5 in the eight-car field, setting up a first-round meeting with low qualifier Bob Glidden, which he lost. Roy was at Gainesville in March for the NHRA Gatornationals. He was curious to see what NHRA's new 7.10 lb. weight break for the Hemi-powered cars would do for his performance. He ran 8.999 to qualify #12. Five Mopars made the field, but none were able to crack the top eight spots in qualifying. Hill's 9.02 in the first round, lost to Dave Kanners' Hornet at 8.98. The Pro Stock Open was run at Southeastern's 900-foot track in April. Roy did really well, running an opening round 7.51 over Billy Ewing and a semifinal 7.56 that narrowly beat Hubert Platt's 7.57. It was an all-Mopar final as he went up against Reid Whisnant for the title. Reid had been running a bit quicker on this day, and his final round 7.45 gave Hill's 7.60 the runner-up spot. He was at Rockingham in May for the IHRA Pro-Am Championships. Hill ran 9.13 in the first round, to beat Ronnie Sox, and in round two, he soloed with an 8.92 when Lamar Walden broke in the Barry Setzer Vega. His run ended in the semifinals, where his 8.88/150.00 lost to Glidden's identical 8.88 at 152. Roy did get the Top Speed of the meet at 154.37. Roy was at Suffolk for the NHRA Division 2 race, and while he qualified for the eight-car field, he failed to reach the finals. He qualified on the "bump" at Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals with a 9.15/149.50. Another 9.15/149.50 in the first round, beat Don Nicholson's late 9.05/149. In round two, he faced Glidden. Bob had problems and ran an off-pace 9.34 while Roy advanced with a 9.13. He had a bit more luck on his side in the semifinals when Richie Zul fouled away a 9.09, and Hill's 9.12 got the win light. This put him into the final against Bill Jenkins. Roy's 9.16/149.75 finished runner-up to Bill's 8.98/152. At Bristol, for the IHRA Springnationals, he ran 9.01 to qualify #5 in the sixteen-car show, but once again, he failed to reach the finals. On July 13, he was at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals. He qualified in the unlucky #9 spot with a 9.04/151.51, setting up a first-round meeting with Wayne Gapp's low qualified 4-door Maverick. Hill tried hard in their match, but his 8.990/152.54 finished behind Gapp's 8.96/152. After Englishtown, most Pro Stock racers made a stop at Maryland International for the US Pro Stock Open on July 18. It was a sixteen-car field, and Hill won the show. He started with a 9.03 over Carl Hobson, and in round two, he ran 8.98 while losing to Richie Zul's 8.94. But he got back in on the "break rule" as Low ET loser from the previous round when Jenkins broke and could not run in the semifinals. Roy made the best of his second chance by beating Nicholson's 8.97 in the semifinals with a quick-leaving 9.03. He made his best run of eliminations in the final, where an 8.97/151.76 got him the victory over Scott Shafiroff's 8.99/150. Roy got a runner-up finish at the IHRA Nationals at Dragway 42 in August. He qualified #4 in the eight-car field with a 9.01/153.58 and then beat Tim Lysikowski in the first round, with a 9.12/153.58. A 9.06 in the semifinals beat Larry Huff's quicker 8.94. This put Hill into the final against Nicholson. The two had a close race, but "Dyno's" 9.00/154 prevailed over Roy's 9.04/153.84. | Roy ran at Southeastern Dragway in April at an eight-car show. He ran at least as quick as 7.56 at the 1000 foot track. | Best NHRA national event times were the 8.990/152.54 in round one, at Englishtown.

Notes: Lee Hunter started his season at Beeline for the AHRA Winternationals. He ran well but failed to reach the finals. The following week, he went to Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals and failed to qualify. In March, Lee was at OCIR for the AHRA Grand American West. Only thirteen cars showed for the sixteen-car field, so qualifying wasn't much of an issue. Hunter’s 9.42 got him the #9 spot in the show. He knocked off the #3 qualifier, Sonny Bryant, in the opening round with a 9.15, but in round two, eventual winner Ken Dondero drove Bill Jenkins' Vega to an 8.79/155 to beat his 9.03/150.00. He qualified #1 for the eight-car field at OCIR's Drag Race 500 event in May. But his late 9.21/151.77 lost to Randy Humphrey's 9.23/149 in the first round. In June, he was at Sacramento for the NHRA Division 7 race. Bryant fouled away a 9.11/147 against him in round one, and Lee advanced with a 9.12/148.77, but he lost in the semifinals. Hunter was really late in the first round, at the second NHRA Division 7 race held at Irwindale early in July. His 8.96/151.26 lost to Kevin Rotty's 9.29/148. The next Division 7 race was held at Fremont. Humphrey fouled against Hunter in round one, and in the semifinals, Lee’s 9.06 beat Gary Hansen's 9.14. This set up a final-round showing with Bryant. Lee was quicker, but later in their race and his 9.24/144 finished runner-up to Sonny's 9.29/140. The following week (July 26), he was at OCIR for the PDA Championships. It was a sixteen-car field, and Hunter ran 9.02/149 to beat Hansen's 9.49/141 in the opening round. He had a close second-round race against Rotty that saw both drivers run 9.08 (Hunter at 150.75), but Lee got the win light. But he slowed to a 9.11/149.50 in the semifinals, which lost to eventual winner Bryant’s 9.00/150. | Won Bonneville WCS meet over Sonny Bryant in August 1975 with a 9.30/144.88 (Top Speed of the Meet). On October 5, Lee was at Irwindale for a twelve-car show. He set a new track record 8.70 (career-best to this point). All cars were to make three passes, with the two Low ET cars meeting in the final. There was no stopping Hunter this day. In his first race, Jim Baker broke against him. In his second race, an easy 9.05/149.50 beat Randy Humphrey's extremely late 8.85. In the third race, Hunter's 9.09/141.06 beat Walt Marshall. He faced Dick Landy in the final, and the two had a good race that saw Hunter run 8.81/146.34 to win over Landy's 8.84/153. (The 8.70 is listed under Match Race Pro Stock as it would have equaled Bob Glidden's all-time best for the year. NHRA bests of 8.887/153.84 gave Bob Glidden a good race in round one, at NHRA Ontario 1975.
