Notes: Frank won the Connecticut 13th annual Memorial Day Championships. His final round 9.46/146.57 beat Frank Iaconio's 9.50/140. Shortly after that (June 17), he was at Englishtown for an eight-car show. His 9.46/147.05 advanced when Bob Ingles fouled in the opening round of eliminations. But it was he who fouled against Tom Smallwood in the semifinal. Frank ran 9.38/149 at Englishtown in June 1973. He ran 9.283/147.78 at Indy 1973, where he qualified 17. He lost to Bob Glidden in round one, 9.12/150 to 9.41/146.10. That was the team's only NHRA national event. He was at the last Pro Stock event in Connecticut in 1973. Frank won the first-round at 9.89/144.69 on a massive holeshot over Will Smallwood's 9.43/146 when Smallwood had trouble staging. He was running off the pace as he broke a gear in both the first and second rounds. The second round was a single after Rich Lamont broke, and then Russo came up completely ailing in the semis to allow John Rines to advance with a slowing 10.02. Where was the 9.09 run?

Notes: Herb ran two NHRA national events this year. He qualified #23 at Englishtown at 9.394/146.58, but he lost a strange round one to Dyno Don. Nicholson broke on the line, but McCandless ran off the track and was disqualified. A 9.284/147.78 at the Indy Nationals put him 18th. He lost round one to Wayne Gapp, 9.08/149 to 9.28/147.54. Also ran 9.21/148.71 at the Tulsa PRA National Challenge. In July, Herb was at Cayuga, Ontario, for the third USRT race. It was a sixteen-car field, and in the first round, he made an easy pass to advance after "Dyno Don" Nicholson fouled away a 9.25/147. Herb had a really close race against Dick Landy in round two that saw his 9.27 nip Landy's 9.28 to the stripe. He improved to 9.21 in the semifinal to defeat Don Carlton's 9.33. His final-round opponent was Dave Stricker, who had driven his Vega to 9.22 to win his semifinal race. The final was expected to be close, and it was. But Dave caught a great light and held on to take a 9.22/145 victory over McCandless' quicker and faster,9.19/149.00. His next stop was at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals, reviewed above. On August 8, he was back at Englishtown for the USRT race. McCandless ran really well. He started the day off by running 9.19/146.10 to beat Scott Shafiroff's 9.60/145. He set Low ET in round two with a 9.12/148.27 that took out Bruce Larson's 9.46/144. He continued to mop out the Vega's in the semifinal, where his second 9.12 run beat Strickler's 9.27/144. He had a surprising finalist in the form of Wally Booth's Hornet. Wally had run as well as 9.22 in eliminations, so he had to take a gamble on the tree in the final. Unfortunately for him, it came up red, and Herb motored to 9.13/148.02 for the victory. At Tulsa, for the AHRA National Challenge, his 9.21 qualified #8 in the 32 car field. He ran 9.24/148 in the opening round to beat Lynn Harrison's 9.63/141. Les Swearingen's Vega broke in round two, so McCandless ran 9.29/148 to advance. In round three, he came up against the eventual winner Bill Jenkins. Bill booted it to a 9.14/149 to defeat McCandless' 9.31/146.

Notes: John was a DNQ at NHRA Gainesville (times not reported). He was at Englishtown for an eight-car NHRA Pro Stock Circuit race. He ran 9.39/147.05 to beat Rich LaMont's Gremlin in the first round, but he missed a shift in the semifinals and lost to Scott Shafiroff. In August, he competed at an eight-car show at Maple Grove. In the opening round, his 9.61/143.54 beat Carlton Phillips' 9.60/140. In the semifinal, his 9.50/142.63 was defeated by eventual winner Dave Strickler who ran 9.29/144. The best NHRA national event time was the 9.386/146.19 at the US Nationals that was DNQ. Photo from the 1973 US Nationals. Also ran 9.32 at Atco. He raced at the last Pro Stock event of the Connecticut season but had rear-end problems and fell in the first round, to Bob Ingles. In November, he competed at the Suffolk National Open. In the opening round, his late leaving 9.18/147.49 lost to Bruce Larson's 9.21/144. Shortly after that, the car was at Atco, where it would make its final pass. Healey was there for an eight-car show. The little Pinto had been running really well by this time, dipping into the 9.1's more and more. On this day, he once again ran 9.19/148.78 in the first round. While this was good, he lost the race to Herb McCandless, driving the "Brooklyn Heavy" Dodge, who won with an 8.57/158. Herb was running the car about 300lbs light. So although John was out of the eliminations, he went up against Paul Blevins in a consolation race. This was the car's final pass as John got out of shape and crossed into Blevins' lane, almost hitting the Vega in the rear. He tried to drive out of it, but the Pinto ended up flipping six times before coming to a stop. The car was totaled. Who said that Pinto's were dangerous? John walked away without even a scratch.

Notes: Bob started his '73 season at OCIR on January 21 for the second All-Pro race. It was an eight-car field, and his 9.60 qualified #4. He improved to 9.51/145.16 in the opening round to beat Larry Johnson, but a even better 9.48/145.86 lost to Larry Huff's 9.49/145 in the semifinal. The following week, he was at Beeline Dragway for the AHRA Winternationals. He qualified #6 with a 9.38/147.54. A 9.53/144.69 won in the opening round of eliminations. In the second round, his 9.58/143.51 lost to Wayne Gapp's 9.28/143. At Pomona's 32 car show for the NHRA Winternationals, Lambeck's 9.538/147.29 qualified #9. He won his first-round race with a 9.602/145.16 over Mike Johnson's 10.62/135 and ran 9.684/144.69 when Melvin Yow failed to show in time. But in round three, his ailing 10.946/91.74 lost to Don Carlton's 9.50/145. That was Bob's last NHRA national event of the year. Shortly after that, he was at Holtville Raceway for its Pro Stock Championships. A 9.65 qualified #2 in the eight-car show behind Ken Van Cleave's 9.52. His 9.60 advanced in round one, but he fouled against Dale Falk in the semifinal. Lambeck ran well at the Bakersfield March Meet, where he reached the final. He qualified #4 in the eight-car field with a 9.66. An opening round 9.50/146.10 defeated Mike Johnson, and he got a lucky break in the semifinal when Butch Leal's Duster broke a U-joint. He faced Huff in the final, and Larry's 9.47 scored the victory over his 9.60 runner-up effort. The following weekend, he was at Fremont for the AHRA Northern Nationals. This was a sixteen-car show, and he ran well, lasting until the second round before losing to the race's eventual winner Dick Landy. On March 24, he was back at OCIR for the final All-Pro race. This was another sixteen-car show, and his 9.25 qualified #1. In the first round, he ran a career-best 9.23 at 145.86. But then, after clearing the traps, his engine blew, and oil got under the tires. He ended up crashing and totaling the car. He received a broken left leg and lacerations.

Notes: This car was driven by top fuel driver Steve Carbone at the Division 4 WCS event at Albuquerque the weekend of August 11/12/1973. | Huff was runner-up to Butch Leal at the second OCIR All-Pro race. His final round 9.55/144.23 lost to Leal's 9.36/147. At Beeline for the AHRA Winternationals, he qualified #13 in the sixteen-car field with a 9.63/142.63. He lost to Dick Landy in the first round. At Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, his 9.80/142.85 qualified #18 in the 32 car show. He lost early in eliminations. Larry qualified #3 with a 9.58 at Famoso for the Bakersfield March Meet. He worked his way to the final of the eight-car show, stopping a tough Bill Bagshaw in the semifinals. In the final, he ran Bob Lambeck and his 9.47 took the victory over Bob's 9.60. A week later (March 11), he was at Fremont for the AHRA Northern Nationals. He qualified #2 with a 9.37/145.86. Once again, he worked his way to the final, running a strong 9.26/147.28 in round two while beating Sonny Bryant's 9.38/144. In the semifinal, a 9.28 beat Larry Breaux's 9.35. In the final, he faced low qualifier Landy, who had set Low ET in round two with a 9.07. Huff tried hard in the final, but his 9.32/147.29 was no match for Dick's 9.12/150 and Larry had to settle for the runner-up spot. It was then back to OCIR for the final All-Pro race ran on March 24. Huff qualified #4 and in the opening round to beat Ken Van Cleave with a 9.36. A second round 9.28/146.34 beat Jim Baker, but he lost to Landy in the semifinals. He got another runner-up finish at the NHRA Division 4 Opener at LaPlace in April. There, his final round 9.88/142 lost to Bob Coleman's Low ET and Top Speed of the meet pass of 9.44/144. The Challenger was starting to get dated by 1973 standards, but he was still doing pretty well with it. On May 24 he was at Dragway 42 for the AHRA Grand American held there. He qualified #5, but failed to reach the finals. In June he was at Denver's Century 21 Dragway for the AHRA Springnationals. Once again, he failed to make the finals after qualifying #4 with a 10.01. He went to Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals the following week (June 10). A 9.53 got the "bump spot" in the sixteen-car field, but a 9.71 in the first round, lost to Bob Riffle's 9.51.

Notes: AKA Northwest Thunder. Ken eventually sold the car to Billy Stepp. | Ken was at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, where he qualified #12 in the 32 car field with a 9.57/146.34. A first-round 9.85 was all he needed as his competition broke. In round two, his 9.72 lost to Jack Roush's 9.63. He ran well at Fremont for the AHRA Northern Nationals, where he made it into the semifinals before losing to the eventual winner Dick Landy. A week later(March 18), he was at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals. Ken qualified on the "bump" for the sixteen-car field with a 9.37, but an off pace 10.21 lost to Mike Fons' 9.37 in the opening round. He stayed busy, as the following week, he was at OCIR for the final All-Pro race. He qualified #12 for the sixteen-car show, but he lost to Larry Huff in the opening round.

Notes: Melvin started the season at Beeline for the AHRA Winternationals. He qualified #4 in the sixteen-car field. In the opening round, his 9.38 beat Barrie Poole and in round two a 9.34 turned back Roy Hill in his new Duster. A semifinal 9.37 beat Wayne Gapp's ailing Pinto and moved him into the final against "Dyno Don" Nicholson. Unfortunately, Yow's Demon broke, and he slowed to 10.86/88.66 in a runner-up finish to Nicholson's 9.50/141. At Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, he again qualified #4, this time with a 9.44/145.39. An easy 9.76 in the first round, beat Larry Huff's 9.96. But he was unable to return for his second-round race against Bob Lambeck. The team had more problems at Gainesville after running 9.19 to qualify #5. The car broke and was unable to run, letting first alternate Bob Glidden take his place in the field. Warner Robins held an eight-car show soon after that, and Yow qualified #1 and ran 9.50 and 9.35 (Low ET) to reach the final. Unfortunately, rain halted the race and the finals were never run. Another eight-car show was run at National Trail in April. Melvin ran a solo 9.17/148.51 in the first round, before losing to Bill Jenkins' 9.25/149 in the semifinals with a 9.36/144.46. Also ran 9.18 at York PA.

Notes: Former Jenkins/Larson car. Miami FL 7/29/73 Richie Zul's car and transporter were stolen at the NHRA Summernationals. He rented Bill Jenkins' old '71 Camaro and stuffed his engine into it to keep his race commitments. It worked out quite well as he won over an eight-car field at Englishtown shortly after. He opened with a 9.57/126.76, and then in the semifinals, his solo 9.37/145.63 advanced when Frank Russo broke a water hose. He faced the Pinto of John Healy in the final, and Zul's 9.40/145.86 got the victory. At the Super Stock Magazine Nationals, he qualified #12 in the sixteen-car field with a 9.49/145.16, but he fouled against Melvin Yow in the opening round. On August 8, he competed at the USRT event at Englishtown. Ironically, he was substituting for Jenkins, who had his Vega stolen at St. Louis three days before this race. In the first round, Zul and Mike Fons, driving the "Motown Missile," had a close race that saw both drivers run 9.38 (Zul at 146.10). The Camaro got the "win" light. Zul's 9.41/146.34 was defeated in the second round by Wally Booth's 9.28/144. He then went to Maple Grove for an eight-car show where his 9.89/140.18 lost to Carl Ruth's 9.69/141 in the first round. Atco held an eight-car round-robin race later in the month, and Zul was there. Mike Fons fouled against him in his first race, and Richie eased it through with a 13.17/65.00. In the second race, Zul's 9.35/147.78 lost to Jenkins' 9.05/153. He was back at Englishtown in September for yet another eight-car show. Unfortunately, his 9.38/144.57 in the opening round lost to Scott Shafiroff's 9.37/144. The following week he was back at Englishtown for the NED Fallnationals. He ran 9.29/148.02 to qualify #3 in the eight-car show. In the first round, a great 9.26/148.51 beat Bob Judd's 9.88.

Notes: Every Ford Pro Stock driver dropped their big block (either Boss 429 or SOHC powered) Mavericks and jumped on the small-block (351) Pinto bandwagon for '73. All except "Fast Eddie" Schartman. He had been one of the most successful Funny Car pilots in '67-'68, but his early years in Pro Stock did not get him the success he was used to. He ran the Boss 429 engine from the start in Pro Stock, first in a Cougar and then in a series of Comets/Mavericks. The '70-'71 seasons were not the greatest for him, but by '72 he was really starting to make some progress. So, he decided to run this combination again for '73. And it paid off. He beat some "name" drivers with this car which by all accounts was a dinosaur to everyone else.

Notes: Coleman had his new Duster out at LaPlace Dragway on April 1st for the NHRA Division Four opener. In the first round, Bob Penner fouled against him. A 9.50 in the semifinal beat Charlie Rogers' 9.60. In the final, he faced low qualifier, Larry Huff, and Huff ran an off-pace 9.88/142 while Bob got the victory with a 9.44/144. He was at Southland Dragway in May for the second NHRA Division Four race. He set Low ET and Top Speed at 9.19/148.29 while reaching the final. In the final, his 9.48/145.39 finished runner-up to Oscar Roberts' 9.49/143.

Notes: SRD delivered this car to Bruce at the end of 1972. Bruce had been running Bill Jenkins' '70 Camaro as a lease. Larson debuted his new Vega at the NHRA Springnationals in June. New car bugs kept him from qualifying for the show. It took a while, but by the end of August, Bruce really had his Vega flying. At the NHRA Pro Stock Circuit race at Englishtown, he only qualified #5 for the eight-car show, but he beat Frank Iaconio in the opening round, and a semifinal 9.34/145.16 beat Al Joniec's Pinto at 9.43/145. He faced Scott Shafiroff in an all-Vega final, and his 9.24/146.34 got him the victory over Scott's 9.41/145. At the NHRA US Nationals, his 9.364/144.46 qualified way down in the #27 spot. His first-round 9.35 lost to Bob Riffle's 9.22. The following week (September 9), he was at the NED Fallnationals at Englishtown. Once again, the final came down to the two Vegas of Shafiroff and Larson. And once again, Bruce outran Scott, this time a 9.19/148.27 (Top Speed) got the win over a 9.21/147. Shortly after that (September 15), he was at Atco for the NHRA Division One final. In the opening round of eliminations, his 9.41/147.78 beat Charlie Castaldo's 9.46/144. Bruce also ran 9.210 at Suffolk.

Notes: The best NHRA times were 9.290/147.29 in a first-round loss to Reid Whisnant's 9.21 at the 1973 Gatornationals. Ronnie was at Rockingham early in May for the IHRA Pro-Am Championships. His 9.23 qualified #7 in the sixteen-car field, and in the opening round, he got a solo run when Harold Clark blew an engine on his burnout. Lyles ran 9.44/145.86 to advance. A second-round 9.28/146.57 beat Roy Hill's 9.37/141, but in the semifinal, he fouled on a 9.22 run against eventual winner Don Carlton, who ran 8.99. Shortly after that, Lyles was at Maple Grove for its annual Dutch Classic race. He qualified #4 in the eight-car field with a 9.40, and in round one, his 9.25/146.34 (Low ET and Top Speed) beat Bruce Larson. In the semifinal, his opponent, Bill Lawton, fouled. But shortly after leaving the line, a rod let go in the Duster, and he could not run in the final. He was back at Maple Grove for the USRT event. It was a sixteen-car field, and in the opening round, his 9.41/144.69 fell to Herb McCandless' 9.39/146. He then went to Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals but failed to qualify. Things went much better at Blaney for the third NHRA Division Two race. He first ran 9.45/145.16 to beat Jim Rodriquez. A second-round 9.47/144 took out William Paris, and a 9.41/144.23 stopped Oscar Roberts in the semifinal. He lined up against Melvin Yow in the final. Yow's transmission let go, so Lyles' 9.41/144.92 scored the victory.

Notes: AKA The Kid From NYC. Shafiroff had his new Vega at Englishtown in March for an eight-car show. His check-out pass of 10.56/134.21 qualified #6. He beat Jim Cook in round one, and in the semifinals, he ran 9.65/140.18 to beat Larry Sengstack, who missed a shift. He faced low qualifier Richie Zul in the final, and despite a consistent 9.67/140.18, he finished runner-up to Zul's 9.47/143. On April 15, he was at Cecil County for its National Open event. A 9.55 qualified #5, and that set up a first-round meeting with low qualifier Paul Blevins. Scott improved to 9.50/144.69 in their race, but it was no match for Blevins" 9.22/147. Scott qualified #16 at Englishtown's 32 car show for the NHRA Summernationals with a 9.33. He lost to Stuart McDade in the opening round, 9.27 to 9.33. He was runner-up to Ronnie Lyles at a Pro Stock race in Connecticut in August. Twenty-four cars were attempting to qualify for the sixteen-car field at St. Louis for the AHRA Gateway Nationals, and Scott qualified #6 with a 9.25. He beat Tommy Johnson in the opening round, but a 9.42 in round two lost to Gary Kimball's slower 9.58. Scott also ran well at the Super Stock Nationals. He qualified #7 with a 9.34/147.78, and in round one, his 9.30/147.78 beat Rufus Boyd. A quick-leaving 9.37/145.39 beat Jack Roush's quicker, but later 9.35/148 in round two. But in the semifinals," "Dyno Don" Nicholson's 9.18/148 was too much for his 9.27/147.05. Shortly after that, he was back at Englishtown for an NHRA Pro Stock circuit race. It was an eight-car field, and a 9.37/144.38 beat Richie Zul's close 9.38/144 in the opening round. In the semifinals, opponent John Healy missed a shift, and Scott advanced with a 9.32/146.10. He faced the similar Vega of Bruce Larson in the final, and Bruce ran a strong 9.24/146 to get the victory over Shafiroff's 9.41/145.86 runner-up effort. Scott ran 9.344/145.63 at the Indy Nationals.

Notes: Allen was in Connecticut in April for an eight-car show. In the first round, his 9.50 beat Bobby Lewis, but in the semifinal, his off-pace 10.67 lost to eventual winner Richie Zul's 9.43. He was at Englishtown on May 6 for the NHRA Division One opener. An opening round 9.43/145.63 beat Bill Lawton's 9.47/143 but despite improving to 9.37/147 in the semifinal, he lost to Paul Blevins' 9.31/148. Shortly after that (May 20), he won the second NHRA Division One race held at Cayuga, Ontario. He set Low ET there at 9.41, and in the final, his 9.48/142.18 beat Ron Hutter's slightly quicker 9.47/142. Early in June, Ray was at Maple Grove for the USRT event. It was a sixteen-car field, and in round one, he fouled against Ken Dondero. He was the third alternate at Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals with a 9.55. Shortly after that, he was at Englishtown for an eight-car show. All cars were to make three runs. In Allen's first race, his 9.27/147.78 lost to Herb McCandless' 9.16/149. He also lost his second race, where a 9.30/147.05 fell to Mike Fons' 9.17/135. In his last race, he scored a 9.20/147.78, beating Frank Russo's 9.38/149. His next stop was at Cecil County for the All-American Pro Stock Championships. It was an eight-car show, and in the first round, his 9.36/144.23 beat Rob Campbell's 9.42/141. But in the semifinal, his 9.51/131.57 lost to the race's eventual winner Ed Schartman, who advanced at 9.12/146. Near the end of June, he was at Maple Grove for the USRT event. He was not a regular on the circuit, but rain postponed the race from a Wednesday to Thursday. Three cars were unable to stay the extra day, so Allen filled in for one. He lost in the first round, to Ken Dondero, who was driving one of "Dyno Don" Nicholson's Pinto's. But Ray later came back out to run in a consolation race where he beat Dave Kanners' 9.34/143 with a 9.31/145.86. Ray qualified #25 at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals with a 9.41. He beat Sonny Bryant in the opening round of eliminations, and in round two, his 9.31 beat Bobby Yowell's quicker, 9.29. But in round three, his 9.30 fell to Melvin Yow's 9.14. Ray ran 9.401/135.39 for the 32nd qualifying spot at NHRA Indianapolis on 9/01/73. He got into the field as the defending champion.

Notes: Car ran 9.61 at Blaney SC and 9.64 at Rockingham in '73. Harold was at the Suffolk National Open in November. He was running really well. It was an eight-car show and in the opening round, his 9.13/147.63 beat Clyde Cheek. He lost to Richie Zul's 9.04/149 in the semifinals with a 9.16/147.16. But Zul was disqualified and Harold was reinstated for the final against Frank Iaconio. Harold had the edge based on ETs, but in the final, Frank got out on him and his 9.16/147 held off the Duster's quicker 9.12/146.79.

Notes: On June 17, Irv was at Lubbock, Texas, for the third NHRA Division Four race. He downed Kelly Chadwick in the opening round with a 9.94/137.41. In the semifinals, he beat another Vega, this one belonging to Lynn Harrison. Irv's 10.02/136.78 defeated Lynn's 10.15/134. Beringhaus really picked it up in the final, running a 9.64/141.74 (Low ET and Top Speed) for the victory over Bob Coleman. Another win came on July 8 at the third NHRA Division Five race held at Cornhusker Raceway Park. He had set Low ET and Top Speed at 9.64/142.40 in qualifying #1 for the eight-car field. A 9.77/137.82 in the opening round beat David Piekarski, and a semifinal 9.72/140.18 beat Harrison. He went up against John Hagen in the final, and Irv's 9.67/141.50 won over Hagen's 9.85/136. Not long after that, he went to Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals. It was a 32 car field, and he ran 9.42 for the #26 spot in the show. Unfortunately, he lost to Wally Booth in the first round. The next stop for Irv was in Minnesota for the NHRA Division Five race. He qualified #5 in the eight-car show, which set up a first-round meeting with low qualifier Wayne Gapp. Beringhaus had some luck on his side as Gapp fouled, and he ran 9.44/139.10 to advance. In the semifinal, his 9.52/144.92 fell to eventual winner Larry Huff's 9.46/144. Irv was in Canada for the NHRA Grandnationals on August 3. He qualified #14 in the sixteen-car field, but a first-round 9.48/145.86 lost to Reid Whisnant's 9.28/146. On August 19, he competed at the fourth NHRA Division Seven race at Bonneville. Irv qualified #1 and then ran 9.84 in the first round, to defeat Ken Hedman's SOHC Maverick. But in the semifinal, Sonny Bryant set Low ET with a 9.74 to drop Beringhaus' 9.76. Beringhaus was in Seattle on August 25 for the final NHRA Division 6 race. He ran 9.41/147.54 in the first round, to beat Jack Manchester, and a semifinal 9.32/147.05 stopped Monty Mantovan. In the final, he beat Don Ringer's Vega for the victory with a 9.53/146.81. At Indy for the NHRA US Nationals, Irv ran 9.30/146.10 to qualify #20 in the 32 car show. His 9.48 in the first round, fell to Paul Blevins' 9.19. A week later (September 9), he was at Minneapolis for the NHRA Division Five final. Bob Riffle dominated this race with 9.2's; no one was even close to his performance. Irv won his opening race over Dwayne Haberman with a 9.64/146.57, but his semifinal 9.94/141.95 lost badly to Riffle's 9.24/146. He then went to Sears Point for the NHRA Division Seven final. A 9.40/145.16 in the opening round beat Jim Baker. In the semifinal, his 9.50/144.92 fell to Bill Bagshaw's 9.29/147. Irv also ran 9.30 at Dallas International. The car was built for Irv by "Dandy" Dick Landy. It was sold to Mike Fons in January 1974 by Irv's widow Nancy. Fons ran the car as the "Motown Missile" from 1974/75. Won Amarillo WCS meet in 6/73 with high nines. Early low qualifier at high altitude Albuquerque NHRA WCS meet at 10.26 on 8/11/73.
