Notes: Strickler was at Lakeland on March 3 for the IHRA Winternationals. He qualified #11 and lost in the opening round, where his 9.67/140 lost to Ronnie Sox's 9.31/145. In April, he was at Suffolk for an eight-car show. A 9.47 qualified #3, and in round one, his 9.43 beat Carlos Sandoval who had missed a shift. Frank Iaconio smoked the tires in the semifinal against him, and Stricker ran 9.87 to advance. He was to face Rich Mirarcki in the final. The final was never run as it was rained out. Shortly after that (April 15), he was at Cecil County for its National Open. It was another eight-car field, and he qualified #3 with a 9.33. He soloed with a 9.47/142.88 in the opening round when Dutch Irrgang's Vega broke. In the semifinal, his 9.37 lost to Paul Blevins' 9.19. On May 6, he was at Rockingham for the IHRA Pro-Am Championships. He had the quickest Chevy qualifier with his career-best (to this point) 9.37 getting the #13 spot in the show. In the first round, his late 9.37/145.39 lost to Stuart McDade's 9.41/145. Dave was at Muncie on May 20 for the IHRA Northern Nationals. He qualified #5 with a 9.56 and lasted until the semifinals before his 9.35/145.39 lost to eventual winner Don Carlton's 9.04/152. He was at Maple Grove in June for the USRT event. In the first round, his 9.39/144 beat Wally Booth's 9.51/142. A even better 9.30/144.69 lost to a quick-leaving Ken Dondero at 9.31/144, who was driving one of "Dyno Don" Nicholson's Pintos. He was the strongest Chevy qualifier at Bristol for the IHRA Springnationals. His 9.43 got him the #6 spot in the sixteen-car field. Strickler lasted until round two before eventual winner Carlton beat him. The next USRT event was in Minnesota in July. Dave beat Mirarcki in the first round, and in round two, his 9.30 beat Wally Booth's 9.52. In the semifinal, a 9.30 defeated Wayne Gapp's 9.54. He went up against "Dyno Don" Nicholson in the final. The two had a great race saw saw "Dyno's" 9.26/145.16 beat Strickler's 9.27/145.16. The next USRT event was held at Cayuga, Ontario. Ford's had won the first two USRT races, but this one belonged to Strickler. Dave's 9.31/145.16 beat Booth in the opening round. In round two, his 9.36 took out Ed Schartman. He got a big win over Ronnie Sox in the semifinal, where his 9.22/147.50 beat Sox's quicker 9.17/148. He faced the always tough Herb McCandless's formidable Dodge in the final. Dave cut another excellent light with his 9.22/145.39 winning over Herb's 9.19/149. Surprisingly, he did not race at the NHRA Summernationals, but he did race at the Super Stock Nationals near the end of the month (July 28). He qualified #8 for the sixteen-car field with a 9.35/144.54. Dave improved to 9.31/144 in the first round, to beat Carl Ruth's 9.69/141. In round two, Melvin Yow fouled away a 9.22/148 against him, advancing Stricker's 9.36/143 into the semifinal. There, Dave fouled away a 9.38/143.54 against the eventual winner Paul Blevins. The following day, he was in Connecticut for an eight-car show. The race was run with all the cars making two runs, and the two drivers with the most wins would meet in the final. Dave's 9.33/145.39 beat Ray Allen's quicker 9.30/146 in his first race. In his second race, he beat Gapp's 9.42/146 with a 9.38/143.54. This put him into the final against "Dyno Don." Nicholson was running 9.1's with ease, and in the final, he set Low ET with a 9.09/147 that topped Strickler's 9.34/143.54. As the season progressed, Dave's little Vega became more and more of a threat as it was running strong. On August 8, he was at Englishtown for the USRT event. It was a sixteen-car field with all the "big Name" drivers. In the opening round of eliminations, Dave's 9.26/145.63 beat Dave Kanners' 9.44/143. In round two, he ran 9.20/145.39 to beat Mike Fons' 9.27/148. He ran McCandless in the semifinals, and his 9.27/144.92 lost to the Dodge's 9.12/148. He then won over an eight-car field at Maple Grove. A 9.48/144 in the opening round had beaten Clyde Cheek's 9.55/142. In the semifinal, he quickened his pace to 9.29/144.92 in defeating John Healy's 9.50/142. He faced Ruth in the final, who was also driving an SRD-built Vega in the final. The cars may have looked alike, but they didn't run the same as Dave set Low ET with a 9.22/144.92 while winning over Carl's 9.69/141. Dave ran 145.16 at PRA Tulsa OK 9/73.

Notes: On May 6, Zul was at Englishtown for the NHRA Division One opener. He qualified #3 in the eight-car field with a 9.26/147.23. In the opening round of eliminations, his 9.33/146.57 defeated Jeg Coughlin's 9.49/141. In the semifinal, his 9.36/146.10 fell to Levi Holmes' identical 9.36/146. Shortly after that (May 13), he was at Maple Grove for the Dutch Classic. It was another eight-car field, and his 9.39 qualified #2 behind Carmen Rotonda's 9.36. But he failed to show for his first-round race against Bill Lawton. He was unable to qualify at Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals. Richie qualified #18 at the Summernationals at 9.359/144.43, and then the car was stolen during the race. He replaced the car with the Jenkins Camaro but did not race any other NHRA national events in 1973.

Notes: Bill Jenkins sold Frank his first Lenco in 1973. Ran 9.26 at NED. Ran 9.443/145.80 DNQ at NHRA Englishtown and 9.47/147.05 DNQ at NHRA Indianapolis IN 9/01/73. Those were Frank's only two NHRA national events in 1973. Frank was at Suffolk in April for an eight-car show. He qualified #1 with a 9.36 (Low ET), and in the first round, his 9.41 beat Carl Hobbs' 9.63 in the "Super Fats" Camaro. In the semifinals, he spun the tires against Dave Strickler and lost. Shortly after that, he was in Connecticut for another eight-car show. It was an interesting day for Frank, as he fouled away a 9.67 against Bob Judd in the first round, but returned to the show on the "break rule." He fouled again in the semifinals with a 9.46 going to waste against Charlie Castaldo's 10.16. But Charlie's Mopar broke, so Iaconio found himself in the final against Richie Zul's big-block Camaro. Now Frank was a little gun shy after fouling twice. His late 9.44/146.57 finished runner-up to Zul's 9.50/144. In May, he went to Maple Grove for the Dutch Classic race. Once again, it was an eight-car field, and Iaconio qualified #5, which set up a first-round meeting with low qualifier Carman Rotonda. It was no contest, as Frank ailing Vega lost to Rotonda's similar car at 9.30/142. He was back in Connecticut for its Memorial Day Championships, where he finished runner-up to Frank Russo's 9.46/146 with a 9.50/140.18. He was at Englishtown for an eight-car show in mid-June, but his opening round 9.48/146.57 lost to Scott Shafiroff's 9.42/146. Almost 50 cars attempted to qualify for the 32 car field at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals; Frank's 9.44 got him the #28 spot in the show.

Notes: Ken drove this car at the 1973 NHRA Winternationals. Did it race in 1972, too? Ken ran 9.657/142.85 to qualify #16 at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. The race was rained out and he did not return for the rain date. Don raced at Indy and qualified #8 at 9.180/147.05 but lost to Arlen Vanke in round one, when he crossed the center line. He raced Don Nicholson's second Pinto at Ontario.

Notes: Hill was at Beeline for the AHRA Winternationals in January. He qualified #8 with a 9.40/144.46. Hill beat alternate Kevin Rotty in the first round, with a 9.34/143.54, but in round two, his 9.36/143.77 lost to Melvin Yow's 9.34/146. He qualified #10 at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals with a 9.55/142.63. But he left due to the rain delay. At the NHRA Gatornationals on March 18, a 9.32/144.00 qualified #11. A first-round 9.36/145.36 lost to Ronnie Sox's 9.15/147. Later in March, he was at Warner Robins for an eight-car show. Roy qualified #2 behind Melvin Yow in Billy Stepp's Demon. Hill ran 9.45 in the first round to beat Max Smith's 'Cuda, and in the semifinals, he got a "bye run" and ran 12.24. The meet was then rained out and never completed. In May, he was at Rockingham for the IHRA Pro-Am Championships. Roy qualified #11 with a 9.29. In the first round, he beat Don Nicholson's 9.35/141 with a 9.33/140.00. In round two, he ran 9.37/141.95 but lost to Ronnie Lyles' 9.28/146. On June 2, he was at Blaney Drag Strip for the third NHRA Division Two race. Unfortunately, he fouled against Oscar Roberts in the opening round. Hill qualified #5 at Columbus with a 9.52 for the NHRA Springnationals. But a first-round 9.77/140.84 lost to Yow's 9.51/148. Early in July, he went to Kil-Kare Dragway for its Pro Stock Showdown race. It was an eight-car field, and in the first round, his 9.39 defeated Jeg Coughlin's 9.65. In the semifinals, he faced the AMC Hornet of Wally Booth. Wally fouled away a 9.32 while Roy advanced with a 9.32 of his own. He faced Wayne Gapp in the final. The Pinto had the edge as Wayne was running 9.2's. Sure enough, Roy's 9.33 in the final finished runner-up to Gapp's 9.21. Shortly after that (July 15), Englishtown hosted the NHRA Summernationals. Roy qualified #13 with a 9.30. That wasn't bad, considering almost 50 cars were attempting to qualify for the 32-car field. He beat Lyles in the first round, but a 9.36/144.69 in the second round lost to Yow's 9.18/150. Roy qualified #12 at Bristol on September 16 for the IHRA All-American Nationals. The car broke in the opening round against Ronnie Sox. In October, he competed at the IHRA Nationals at Lakeland. It was a sixteen-car field, and a 9.34/137.61 in round one beat Hubert Platt. He fouled away a 9.43/143 against Gapp in round two. Near the end of the season (November 25), he was at Gainesville for the Turkey Trot National Open. He qualified #2 in the eight-car field with a 9.25/147.05 behind Reid Whisnant's 9.12/149. in the opening round, his 9.27/138 beat Max Smith. Not sure how they did their eliminations, as this was an NHRA run, but usually, the #1 and #2 qualifiers don't meet until the final. But here, the two met in the semifinal, and Roy lost to Reid's 9.04. Also ran 9.30 at Cecil County and 9.38/145.63 NHRA Indianapolis.

Notes: At the AHRA Winternationals, Bill ran 9.57/145.39 to qualify #11 in the sixteen-car field. A opening round 9.58/143.54 lost to eventual winner "Dyno Don" Nicholson's 9.41/143. A 9.53/144.69 qualified #8 in the 32 car field at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. In round one, a 9.74 beat Tom Jacobson's Camaro. In round two, Bill Jenkins got out of shape and slowed to a 10.12 while Bagshaw motored to a 9.69/144.69 for the win. In round three, he lost to Jack Roush's Pinto. Bill was still running his Challenger at Famoso for the Bakersfield March Meet. He lucked out in the first round, when Butch Leal's Duster broke against him. In the semifinals, he lost to Larry Huff. A week later (March 11), he was at Fremont for the AHRA Northern Nationals. A 9.37/147 qualified #3 and he lasted until round two where he fouled against Ken Van Cleave. Bagshaw was runner-up to Dick Landy at Sacramento for the California State Championships. He ran 9.48 in the semifinals to earn the right to face Landy in the final. Landy's 9.17/148 was too strong for Bill's old Challenger's 9.37/146.72.

Notes: Wicked Wilbert. Also ran 9.19 at Englishtown. Smallwood was at Rockingham early in May for the IHRA Pro-Am Championships. It was a sixteen-car field, and his 9.24 qualified #8. In the opening round of eliminations, Wilbert's 9.45/146.34 beat Linwood Craft's 9.84/142. But in round two, his 9.34/146.00 lost to Ronnie Sox's 9.11/148. Will raced at the final Pro Stock event of the Connecticut season. He lost the first-round, was reinstated as the Low ET loser when an opponent broke, and then lost a close one to eventual winner Richie Zul in the semis. He ran times of 9.43/146.34, 9.29/146.81, and 9.40/146.10.

Notes: Wally debuted his Hornet in June at the NHRA Springnationals. The car had some teething problems and failed to qualify. By the next NHRA event, the Summernationals at Englishtown, Booth had gotten his Hornet figured out and he ran 9.28/145.63 to qualify #10 in the 32 car show. Not too bad considering almost 50 cars were attempting to qualify. He lasted until round two where his 9.32/144.00 fell to eventual winner Bill Jenkins' 9.02/150. He continued to flog the AMC and on August 1 made it into the final at the USRT event at Englishtown. He did it by beating Ronnie Sox in the semifinals with a 9.22, just nipping Sox's 9.24. Unfortunately, Booth lost to Herb McCandless on the money run. Two days later he was in Canada for the NHRA Grandnationals where he qualified #8 with a 9.24. A 9.31/143.16 beat Canadian Alban Gauthier's 9.61/143 in the first round, but in round two his 9.28/144.00 lost to Bob Glidden's 9.16/149. Also ran 9.22 at Beech Bend. Ran 9.344/145.16 at NHRA Indianapolis IN 9/01/73. Qualified at 9.167 at Ontario and got a first-round win at 9.140 (no speed), but slowed to a 13 second time in round two and lost to Dave Kanners' similar machine.

Notes: Pontiac had a strong performance image in the sixties. I’m sure a lot of Pontiac lovers missed having a car to root for in the Pro Stock wars of the early seventies. Sure, there were Pontiac Pro Stockers before this one. But none made the impact that this one did. Early in '73, Bert actually had to send NHRA brochures for the Pontiac Astre to prove to them such a car existed. The car was marketed in Canada. Once NHRA gave Straus the OK, construction started. The car was completed in time for the NHRA Summernationals, but new car bugs kept the car from making the show. At the NHRA Grandnationals, Bert qualified the car #9 in the sixteen-car field. He lost to low qualifier and eventual winner Butch Leal in the first round. His 9.37/143.54 lost to the "California Flash's" 9.17/150. At Indy for the NHRA US Nationals, a 9.269/146.10 qualified #16 for the 32 car show. An opening round 9.33 beat previous year's winner Ray Allen at 9.42. In round two he improved to 9.230/146.57 to send Arlen Vanke's 9.38 packing. But in round three, Bert’s 9.27/146.10 lost to Paul Blevins' 9.20/150.

Notes: Parris was at Miami-Hollywood for the fourth NHRA Division Two race. In the first round, his 9.36/145.39 advanced when Jack Blosser's Challenger broke. He had a good race in round two that saw his 9.46 beat Max Hurley's 9.59. Carmen Rotonda fouled away a 9.39 against him in the semifinal, and Parris ran 9.41. In the final, he faced low qualifier, Reid Whisnant. Reid had been running 9.2's with ease and hit a meet's best of 9.19. So William took a gamble on the tree in the final and came up red. Still, he ran a respectable 9.29/146.34 in a runner-up effort to Whisnant's 9.26/147. William was the third alternate at Gainesville at 9.394/144.00. He qualified #21 at NHRA ENglishtowntown at 9.376/145.90. He ran his best NHRA national event times in a first-round loss to Melvin Yow, 9.22/151 to 9.350/146.57. Willam was the sixth alternate at Indy at 9.456/144.92. He qualified #8 in the Eastern Conference (#9 overall) at the Amarillo World FInals (no qualifying time). He lost in round one, to Lynn Harrison, 9.67/139 to 9.78/140.62. That was William's last NHRA national event of the year.

Notes: Oscar purchased Reid Whisnant's 71/72 car. Reid drove it in a few races while his 73 Don Hardy Duster was being built. In June, Roberts was at Maple Grove for the third NHRA Division One race. The field was two cars short for the eight-car field, so he got to make a solo in the first round. In the semifinal, his 9.37/145.16 lost to Richie Zul's 9.34/145. At the NHRA Summernationals, Oscar drove a Vega to the #27 qualifying position and a first-round loss. We need to validate which car that was. He was running the "Yankee Jo" Duster at Maryland International for the 1st annual U.S. P/S Open race. He had qualified #12, but in round one, his 9.51 lost to Lee Edwards' 9.07. On July 29, he was at Miami-Hollywood for the fourth NHRA Division Two race. His opening round 9.47 beat Jim Rodriquez's 10.29. In round two, his 9.54/143.31 lost to eventual winner Whisnant's 9.19/148. Oscar was the first alternate at the Sanair Grandnationals, but we are unsure if that was the Duster or the Vega. We are listing the speed for the Vega for now. He got into the field and lost to Paul Blevins in round one, with a 9.654/146.92. Oscar had the Duster at Amarillo for the NHRA World Finals. He qualified #6 as an alternate in the Western Conference (?) and #10 overall. In the opening round, his 9.620/142.40 lost to Bob Riffle's 9.48/145.16. The following week (October 14), he was at Lakeland for the IHRA Nationals. Roberts qualified #12, and in the first round, he fouled away a 9.38/146 against Bob Riffle. Roberts ended his season at the Snowbird National Open on December 2. It was an eight-car show, and his 9.24 qualified #3. Unfortunately, he fouled against Kenny Hahn in the first round. He ran 9.442/145.39 at NHRA Englishtown, but that was in a Vega.

Notes: Retained real 4-speed in the Lenco years. Ran at Connecticut last pro stock show of 1973. Was runner up to Richie Zul, running 9.66, 9.69, and 10.02 over Dick Menard, Bob Ingles, and Jeff Jeruss before breaking a water jacket against Zul. Zul was hammering out 9.20s and would have been hard to beat.

Notes: By 1973, there weren't a lot of Challengers running in Pro Stock as most of the Mopar campaigners had switched to the A-body platform. Castaldo stuck to his Challenger and did well with it. In April, he was at Suffolk for an eight-car show. Those pesky Vega's were running well as they picked up the first three spots in qualifying. Castaldo's 9.52 beat Earl Hansell's 10.81 in the opening round of eliminations. But he spun the tires hard in the semifinal and lost to Rich Mirarcki's 9.85. He was at Englishtown on April 15 for an eight-car round-robin show. In the first round, his 9.71/145.86 lost to Mirarcki's 9.51/144. In his second race, Ray Allen's 9.50/145 defeated his 9.57/143.31. He soloed in his third race and ran his best time at 9.53/144.23. Shortly after that, he went to Connecticut for yet another eight-car show. A first-round 9.72 beat Rich Simone, and in the semifinal, his eased up 10.16 advanced when Frank Iaconio fouled. But he hurt the engine on the pass and could not run the final. Iaconio took his place as the "break rule" was in effect. Charlie was the second alternate at the NHRA Summernationals at 9.52/143.50. That was his only NHRA national event. Charlie won at an Englishtown event in July with a 9.51/143.76, per Raceway Park News. He also ran 9.46 at Atco. Reed Koeppe owns the car as of 9/21, and he confirms S&M built it.
