Notes: Sox and Martin were running well in '79 with their new small-block program. They qualified #4 at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals with an 8.65/157.06. An opening round 8.69/155.97 beat Billy Walsh, but the Omni broke against Roy Hill in round two. Things went much better at the Gatornationals. Sox qualified the car #6 with an 8.65/156.79. In the first round, his 8.63/155.17 beat Ronnie Manchester's 8.96/152. In round two, Sox improved to 8.61/155 to beat Larry Lombardo's 8.62/156 in Bill Jenkins' Camaro. Another 8.65/155 beat Don Campanello and set up the first all-Mopar NHRA Pro Stock final since the '73 Springnationals. Unfortunately, Sox was the underdog as Bob Glidden had been running 8.5's with ease. Ronnie tried to cut the light to close in the final and fouled away an 8.75/156.25 while Glidden sailed past with an 8.53 at only 147. The next event on the NHRA trail was the Cajun Nationals at Baton Rouge. Sox qualified #4 at the rain-delayed event and lost to Wally Booth in the first round. Things didn't go too well at the NHRA Springnationals, either. An 8.78 qualified #11, and he lost to Frank Iaconio in the first round. Another first-round loss came at the NHRA Mile High Nationals. It was an eight-car show, and Ronnie qualified #7 with a 9.34/144.92. In the opening round, both he and eventual winner Randy Humphrey ran 9.35 (Sox at 144.46), but Randy got the win. At Englishtown, for the NHRA Summernationals, an 8.72 qualified the team in the #10 spot. Sox lost to Iaconio in the first round. They did not follow the NHRA tour to Canada for the Grandnationals, but they were at Indianapolis for the US Nationals. Sox's 8.76/154.90 barely qualified (#15), and his first-round 8.89/154.17 got knocked out by Humphrey's 8.88/151. The next race was the NHRA Fallnationals at Seattle. Ronnie qualified #7 with an 8.600/156.24. A first-round 8.64/155.17 beat Brad Yuill and another 8.60/155.70 took out Don Nicholson in round two. He came up against a wall in the form of Glidden in the semifinals, and despite running a strong 8.62/155.97, he lost to Glidden's 8.47/157. The NHRA season came to a close at Ontario for the World Finals. There, Ronnie's 8.82/153.84 qualified #10. His season came to an end in the first round, where his 8.84/153.06 lost to Iaconio's 8.70/152. In NHRA points, the team finished tenth. They sold their NHRA legal Omni to Jerry Hurley in December and decided to run big-inch IHRA events for '80. Also 8.659 at Winters and 8.63 156.79 at Gators, where he was Runner up. Also 8.62 155.97 and 8.64 155.17 NHRA Seattle Fallnationals.

Notes: Lee qualified #14 at Pomona at 8.808/153.58. A consistent 8.81/153.58 lost to Sonny Bryant's 8.67 in round one. Hunter was at Denver at the end of June for the NHRA Mile High Nationals. He qualified #6 in the eight-car field with a 9.310/144.92. Unfortunately, he fouled away a potential winning 9.32/144.23 in the first round, that lost to Sonny Bryant's 9.35/135. Lee qualified #10 at the Fallnationals with a great 8.689/156.52. He dropped off to a 9.03/141 in round one, that lost to Frank Iaconio's 8.54/151. Lee qualified #8 at the World Finals at 8.769/157.06. He beat Brad Yuill in round one, 8.86/153 to 8.97/153, but he broke against Don Nicoholson in round two.

Notes: Third alternate at 1979 Winters at 8.82. After failing to qualify at Pomona, Booth really stepped it up at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals. His 8.66/156.79 qualified #7. An opening round 8.71/155.44 beat Tom Owens, but a slowing 9.22/113.78 lost to Mark Yuill's 8.74/153 in round two. At the rain postponed NHRA Cajun Nationals, he lasted until the semifinals, where his 8.81 lost to Lee Shepherd's 8.72. The next stop on the NHRA tour was at Columbus for the Springnationals. Booth's 8.77 qualified #10, and in round one, his 8.86/153.32 lost to Larry Lombardo's 8.76/155 in Bill Jenkins' Camaro. He did not compete at the Mile High Nationals, but he was at Englishtown for the Summernationals, where he qualified #4 with an 8.69. He improved to 8.65 in the first round, and he beat Joe Satmary, and an 8.72 in round two, beat fellow AMC campaigner Andy Mannarino's 8.75. In the semifinals, he lost to eventual winner Frank Iaconio. He ran really well at the PHR Championships held at Martin, Mich. There, he qualified #2 with an 8.71/152.28, and he ran steady 8.7's with an 8.70 best coming in the semifinal with a win over Mark Yuill's 8.74. He went up against Lombardo in the final, and Larry's 8.65/154 got the win over Wally's 8.71/154.63. Wally skipped the NHRA Grandnationals in Canada, but was at Indy for the US Nationals. He qualified #10 with an 8.72/153.58, but he lost to Iaconio in the opening round. He also did not attend the NHRA Fallnationals in Seattle. At the NHRA World Finals at Ontario Motor Speedway, he qualified #7 with an 8.76/153.84. A first-round 8.83/153.06 beat Gary Pugh, but he fouled (8.97/154.10) against Shepherd in round two. He finished fourteenth in NHRA points for '79. This was the last year that he campaigned as he retired from driving after the World Finals.

Notes: Don is in the near lane. Also 8.73/155.70 at the '79 Winters. | Campanello qualified #10 at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals with an 8.73/155.77. He fouled in the first round, of eliminations and slowed to 9.06 while his opponent, Lee Shepherd, advanced with an 8.65. At Gainesville, for the NHRA Gatornationals, his 8.74/156.25 qualified #12. In the opening round, his 8.75/156.52 advanced when Shepherd failed to show. He improved to 8.680/156.79 in the second round to take out Jim Kinnett's 8.87/152 but a semifinal 8.74/156.25 lost to Ronnie Sox's 8.65/155. He was at Columbus in June for the NHRA Springnationals. There, an 8.80 got him the #13 spot in the show. He had a close first-round race against Shepherd that saw his 8.87/153.58 finish second best to Lee's 8.85/152. Don was the first alternate at Indy for the NHRA US Nationals with an 8.83/154.90 best. The Gators times were Don's best for 1979.

Notes: Hill started the '79 season at Tucson for the AHRA Winternationals. He lasted until the semifinals before fouling against Kevin Rotty. Roy qualified on the "bump" at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals with an 8.80/156.79. In the first round, his 8.82/155.17 advanced when Tom Chelbana's Starfire broke. Ronnie Sox's Omni broke in round two, and Roy moved into the semifinals with an 8.80. Unfortunately, his Arrow broke in just off the line in his semifinal race with Joe Satmary. He failed to qualify at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationalsand at Columbus for the NHRA pringnationals where his 8.88 best was only good enough for the third alternate. Roy failed to qualify at Indy for the NHRA US Nationals. He blew an engine so badly during qualifying that the rods coming out of the engine actually damaged the frame. His 8.89/154.10 best was good for the sixth alternate.

Notes: Nicholson borrowed the Mustang II he had sold to Johnny Dowey for the NHRA Division Two Opener at DeSoto. He borrowed it back because he had wrecked his own Mustang II, and his Fairmont was set up for match racing and was not NHRA legal. It proved to be a wise move as the veteran ran 8.77 at only 141.73 in the first round, to beat Pat Williams' 9.22/147, and he made an easy solo in the semifinals as only six cars had shown for the eight-car field. In the final, he set low et with an 8.63/151.77, winning over Jim Kinnett's 8.83/153. Dyno Don ran this 77 Mustang at Indy and ran an 8.657/156.24. Confirmed by National Dragster, Nicholson family.

Notes: The team debuted on the NHRA national event tour at Columbus at 8.75/155.70 to qualify #6. Andy fouled against Warren Johnson in round one, losing an 8.88/150 to 8.914/152.80 contest. He qualified #7 at Englishtown at 8.70/155.70. An 8.83/154.37 beat Ronnie Manchester's 8.90/152 in round one. Fellow AMC racer Wally Booth won their close round two contest, 8.72/155 to 8.75/155.17. He was credited with an 8.65 at the PHR Nats in Martin. We need confirmation of that ET and speed. Andy qualified #13 at Indy at 8.747/153.84. A first-round 8.888/152.54 beat Don Nicholson's fouling shut-off pass, but he ran into Bob Glidden in round two and lost an 8.56/157 to 8.779/154.10 contest.

Notes: Best Engineered car at the 1979 NHRA Winternationals, where it qualified 8th at 8.731/155.44. In the first round, something broke and the car oiled down the track to a 10.04 that lost to Roy Hill's 8.82. At the Bakersfield March Meet, Tom qualified with an 8.70 but once again lost in the opening round. Due to a trailer breakdown, the team failed to make it to Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals. Tom attempted to qualify at Indy for the NHRA US Nationals, but his 8.839/154.63 best was good for the third alternate. At the NHRA World Finals at Ontario Motor Speedway, Chelbana's 8.83/152.02 qualified #12. In the opening round, his 8.90/152.28 lost to "Dyno Don" Nicholson's 8.78/153. He finished 22nd in the NHRA season-long points chase.

In the second round, he fouled away an 8.832/155.17 against Mark Yuill, who advanced with an 8.79/154. At Seattle, for the NHRA Fallnationals, he ran 8.73/155.17 to qualify #12. He improved to an 8.72/154.90 to beat Randy Humphrey's shut-off in round one, but his 8.84/153.58 in round two lost to Joe Satmary's 8.66/154. After running so well, it was surprising to see his name among the non-qualifiers at Ontario Motor Speedway for the NHRA World Finals (first alternate, times unknown but #16 was 8.88). Larry finished 18th in NHRA Pro Stock points. AKA Whirlwind.

Notes: Kinnett qualified on the "bump" at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals with an 8.74/153.06. In the opening round, his 8.77/155.17 beat alternate Lamar Walden's 8.92/151. In round two, his 8.87/152.80 fell to Don Campanello's 8.68/156. Jim was at DeSoto for the NHRA Division Two opener at the beginning of April. Only six cars showed, and his 8.93/152.02 in the first round beat Bill Robertson. In the semi-final, an 8.85/155.05 beat Wyman Barnett, who blew an engine. He faced "Dyno Don" Nicholson in the final, and despite running an 8.83/153.52, he finished runner-up to Don's 8.63/151. He was in Baton Rouge near the end of the month for the NHRA Cajun Nationals. Rain delayed the running of the race until May 2, and he fouled against eventual winner Bob Glidden in the first round. Kinnett had one of the four Mopar Pro Stockers to qualify at Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals. His 8.86 sat on the "bump" for the sixteen-car field. His 8.94/151.00 in the opening round advanced when Alban Gauthier fouled. But in round two, he fouled at 8.96/151.51 against "Dyno Don's" 8.82/152. He qualified #13 at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals with an 8.73, but he lost to Glidden in round two. Next came a runner-up finish to Lee Shepherd at the NHRA Division Four race at Baton Rouge. Kinnett also ran well at the final NHRA Division Three race held at Beech Bend. While he didn't reach the final, he set Top Speed at 155.17. In August, Jim was one of only three Pro Stock cars at Richmond Dragway for the NHRA Division Two race. He qualified #1 with an 8.72/153.84 (Low ET and Top Speed) and got the "odd-lot" solo in the first round. In the final, his 8.73/151.00 easily beat Morris Johnson's 9.43/123. At Indy, for the NHRA US Nationals, he was unfortunate as his 8.721/153.84 qualified #9. It was unfortunate as he had to race low qualifier Glidden in the opening round of eliminations. Glidden's 8.58/157 easily beat Jim's 8.77/153.38. The final NHRA Division Two race was held at Gainesville. Unfortunately, his late 8.79/151.00 in the first round lost to Johnson's 9.07/147. Jim ran 8.72 in the first round of the Summernationals to beat Don Campanello. We see an 8.720 on the results sheet, but that may be dropping the third digit. We are listing that 8.720 as his best for now, but otherwise, his 8.721 at Indy is Jim's quickest confirmed ET of the year. We need validation of the several 8.72s he ran in 1979. Former Vanke, Castaldo 1973 car reskinned as a Volare.

Notes: Qualified on the bump at Bandimere 1979 at 9.53/142.63. Lost round one to Kevin Rotty, 9.34 to 9.58/140.18. Jean went to Seattle for the NHRA Fallnationals, where his 8.82/153.32 qualified on the "bump" for the sixteen-car field. He improved to 8.780/152.54 in the opening round of competition, but it wasn't enough to beat Joe Satmary's 8.65/155.

Notes: AKA Landy's Dodge. This was a small block. Debuted late in the year, qualifying #15 at Seattle at 8.810/153.06. He lost to Don Nicholson in round one, No Time for Don, but an incredible 8.67/153.84 for Brad. We need confirmation on that one! Qualified on the bump at the FInals at 8.880/153.32. Brad lost to Lee Hunter in round one, 8.86 to 8.97.
