Notes: Photo from 1978 US Nationals. Won the Springnationals at Columbus with an 8.76/157.61 over Glidden. Ran 8.72/156.79 at Gainesville 3/78. Lost the quickest side-by-side race in history to Bob Glidden at the NHRA Summernationals, 8.530 to 8.660. On May 7th, Richie was at Englishtown for the NHRA Division One opener. He qualified #1 for the eight-car field with an 8.58. He improved to 8.56/158.73 in the opening round of eliminations to beat Don Campanello's 8.75/141. But in the semifinals, despite running another 8.56 at 159.01 (Top Speed), he lost to the eventual winner Larry Lombardo's 8.57/157. Zul qualified #5 at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals with an 8.70/155.97. Another 8.70 at 155.44 in the first round, beat Jim Kinnett's 8.71/154, but his 8.660/156.25 in round two lost to Bob Glidden's new Fairmont at 8.53/152.54.

Notes: Glidden debuted this car at Edgewater on July 9 for the NHRA Division 3 Points race. The unique machine replaced Bob's Pinto, in which he began the season. It was a promising debut, as he scored 8.76/152.54 to qualify #2 behind Joe Satmary's 8.75/154. An improved 8.66/154.90 in the opening round of eliminations beat Phil Gingerich, while a semifinal 8.68/153.58 handled Dave Avery. Bob faced Satmary in the final, and his 8.65 (Low ET) at 154.10 beat Joe's 8.75/153. A week later (July 16), he was at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals, where he scored his sixteenth NHRA National Event victory. He qualified #1 with an 8.62/154.90 and then ran 8.58/148.02 in the first round to beat Dempsey Hardy's 8.80/153. An 8.535 (Low ET) in round two at 152.54 beat Richie Zul's 8.66/156. That was the quickest side-by-side race in history at that point. An 8.55/149.00 in the semifinals beat Wally Booth's 8.70/154. In the final, he met up with Bill Jenkins' Monza, driven by Larry Lombardo. Bob got the win with an 8.55/154.37 over Larry's 8.71/155. It was also interesting to note that this was his tenth straight NHRA final-round appearance. That was followed by a trip to Maryland International for its US Pro Stock Open event. It was an eight-car show, and Glidden's 8.66 qualified #1. An even better 8.64 in round one beat Satmary's 8.84, but Zul cut a great light in the semifinals, and his 8.80 hung on to win over Bob's quicker 8.66. On July 30, Glidden went to the final NHRA Division Two race at Miami-Hollywood. His 8.69/152.80 advanced in the opening round when Art Gravatt fouled. A semifinal 8.71/153.58 beat Jim Kinnett's 8.95/154. He faced Dempsey Hardy in the final, and Bob made winning look easy as he set Low ET with an 8.65/154.32, scoring the victory over Hardy's 8.84/154. Then it was off to Canada for the NHRA Grandnationals. Of course, he qualified #1, this time with an 8.585 at only 148.51. The field was short a car, so Bob got the "odd-lot" solo and ran another 8.58 at only 151.26 to advance. Frank Iaconio's 8.73/154 fell to the Fairmont's 8.55 at only 149. He faced Larry Lombardo, driving Bill Jenkins' Monza in the final. "Grumpy" had been taking shots at Bob for his new Fairmont, calling it down. So Glidden really enjoyed beating Larry's 8.72/166 in the final, with another 8.550 (Low ET) at a shutting-off way early 144.46! He did that just to bug Jenkins a bit. By now, the big white "boxcar" was bugging everyone as it was proving itself unbeatable. His next stop came at Martin, Michigan, for the PHR Championships. He set Low ET of the meet in qualifying #1 for the sixteen-car field with an 8.68. Round one saw his 8.72/155.70 beat Joe Gouger's 9.06/142. Warren Johnson fouled away an 8.76/154 against him in round two, and Bob advanced with an 8.72/157.61 (Top Speed). He made like a bracket racer in the semifinals, where he ran his third straight 8.72 (at 156.52) to beat Satmary's 8.80/154. Once again, he faced Lombardo in the final, and once again, the results were the same. Bob's 8.74/152.54 got the victory over Larry's far behind 8.89/153. The domination continued at the final NHRA Division Three race at Beech Bend. Bob ran 8.68/158.17 (Top Speed) and 8.64/168.17 to beat Avery and Gouger in eliminations. He went up against Satmary in the final. Joe took a chance and fouled away an 8.74/154, while Glidden notched another win with his 8.64 at only 145.39. Before Indy, Glidden was awarded the "Pro Stock Driver of the Year" by Car Craft Magazine. Bob was the low qualifier at Indy at 8.622/157.61, finally showing some top end. he beat a fouling Dempsey Hardy in round one, 8.648/153.84 to 8.78/154. In round two, Bob took out Mark Yuill, 8.606/154.37 to 8.81/154. Frank Iaconio gave it a good shot against Bob in the semis but was a tenth behind his Low ET pass of 8.600/153.84 to 8.70/155. In the final, Joe Satmary's 8.77/155 finished more than two car lengths back. In Seattle, Bob ran even quicker. He qualified #1 at 8.557/155.70. In round one, his 8.52/154.34 beat Brad Yuill's 8.75 (speed unknown). Bob ran 8.52/157.34 to beat Wally Booth's 8.67/153 in round two. Lee Shepherd fouled against him in the semis, but Bob ran 8.555/152.54 to Lee's 8.70/154 anyway. In the final, Bob set the Low ET and Top Speed of the Meet at 8.499/158.52 to beat Frank Iaconio's game 8.57/155. Bob wrapped up his dream season at Ontario for the World Finals. An 8.556/156.79 was the low qualifier, and he commenced race day with an 8.610/153.32 to 8.78/154 win over Andy Mannarino. An 8.635/156.25 took out Warren Johnson's 8.82/155 in round two, and an 8.587/157.06 beat Wally Booth's off-pace pas in the semis. That speed tied for Top Speed of the Meet, which was awarded to Mark Yuill, who had run the number in qualifying. In the final, Bob again defeated Larry Lombardo, 8.617/156.25 to 8.74/155. What a season! Every other Pro Stock racer was scared of this car. Bob was running 8.4s while shutting down early! That was unheard of. People were speculating that if he ran it out the back door, it would have run over 160. Bob won the NHRA Championship.

Notes: Joe qualified #13 at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals with an 8.729/154.10. An opening round 8.780/155.44 lost to "Dyno Don" Nicholson's 8.69/157. At Baton Rouge for the NHRA Cajun Nationals, Joe ran 8.710/158.52 to qualify #6 for the eight-car field. Unfortunately, he fouled away an 8.84/155.70 in a first-round loss to Lee Shepherd, who ran 9.04/152 to advance. On May 21, he was at Edgewater for the NHRA Division Three race. His 8.74 qualified #2 behind Wally Booth's 8.67, and these two would work their way into the final. Joe ran another 8.74/155.17 in the first round to stop Virgil Brunner's 9.16/151. A semifinal 8.75/155.44 took out Dave Avery's 8.89/151. Booth had the performance advantage by about a tenth as he ran 8.65 in his semifinal race, but the AMC broke in the final, and Joe ran 8.83/155.70 for the victory. The next Division Two race was held at Indianapolis on June 4. Once again, Joe qualified #2 (8.67/157.34), but this time he followed Glidden (8.65/158). An opening round 8.78 beat Brunner's 9.38, but he fouled away an 8.81/154.37 against Andy Mannarino in the semifinals. Satmary qualified #10 at the NHRA Springnationals with an 8.760/155.17. An 8.84/154.90 beat Kevin Rotty's slightly quicker 8.83/155 in the first round, and in round two, Don Campanello's 8.95/152 fell to Joe's 8.87/154.37. His run ended in the semifinals, where Bob Glidden's 8.72/151 put his 8.89/154.63 on the trailer. Joe qualified #6 at the Englishtown Summernationals at 8.722 (speed not reported). He beat Don Campanello in round one, 8.66/156.24 to 8.81/152. NI round two, Joe took out Frank Iaconio, 8.65/157.06 to 8.71/156. Larry Lombardo ended his day in the semis, 8.63/155 to 8.69/155.44. Joe qualified #2 at the Grandnationals at 8.630/155.97 (Top Speed of the Meet). He lost to a Dempsey Hardy holeshot in round one, 8.77/153 to 8.75/154.63. Joe had a fantastic U.S. Nationals at Indy. He qualified #4 at 8.680/155.70. In round one, he took out Brad Yuill, 8.735/153.58 to 8.80/155. Randy Humphrey had problems against him in round two, and Joe won, 8.734/154.63 to 9.54/105. Satmary then grabbed a huge holeshot win over Lee Shepherd in the semis with his 8.745/154.90 taking out the Reher & Morrison team's 8.728/153.32. Joe was up against world-beater Bob Glidden in the final, and his 8.772/155.17 couldn't catch Bob's 8.61 at only 146. Joe's next race was the World Finals at Ontario. He qualified #6 at 8.720/155.70. He got a bit of revenge on Dempsey Hardy in round one, 8.823/153.58 to 8.99/151. Larry Lombardo put a close to his season in round two, however, 8.71/155 to 8.880/153.32. It was a good year for the racer from Hammond, Indiana. Did Joe run 8.62 in Divisional action?

Notes: Entering into the '78 season, Larry Lombardo, driving Bill Jenkins' Monza, was still the Chevy to beat in Pro Stock competition. But that changed during this season with Frank Iaconio and Lee Shepherd pushing hard to displace Jenkins' car for the #1 Chevy spot. Larry started the season at Tucson for the AHRA Winternationals. It was an eight-car field, and all qualified cars were Chevys. Larry ran 8.93/152 to qualify #4, and he lasted until the semifinals before his 9.01/146.37 lost to eventual winner Kevin Rotty's 8.99/150. The Jenkins team figured that they ran far better at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. They didn't. In fact, Jenkins waived his points at this race because of Lombardo's poor qualifying position (#12 at 8.83/154). But Lombardo made up the difference with his driving ability. In the opening round, his quick-leaving 8.80/154 beat Sonny Bryant's quicker 8.77/152. A second-round 8.76/154.63 beat Mark Yuill's 8.83/153, and in the semifinals, he stopped Gordie Rivera's 8.82/155 with an 8.77/153.84. I'm sure that Bill would have gladly kept his points by now. But he still had to face Bob Glidden's low qualifying Pinto in the final. Bob was the only car to run 8.5s at Pomona, and his slowest run in eliminations was his semifinal 8.69, so Larry knew he had to be sharp in the final. Both left together, and Glidden's 8.67/156 gave Larry's 8.78/155.70 the runner-up position. Shortly after that, he went to Phoenix for the Winter Championships, where although there were two Chevys in the final, Jenkins' car was not one of them. The next NHRA race was the NHRA Gatornationals. This is the race where Iaconio won his first NHRA event and started pushing Lombardo for the #1 Chevy Pro Stock title. Larry qualified #4 with an 8.64/155 behind Glidden, Iaconio, and Rotty (in that order). A first-round 8.72/156 beat Richie Zul's 8.82/155, and in round two, Larry's 8.68/156.79 beat Rivera at 8.86/155. But in the semifinals, the two Monzas of Iaconio and Lombardo lined up, and Frank outright beat Larry's 8.70/155 with an 8.68/155. To make matters worse, the following week (March 19), Larry made it into the final at the NHRA Division 4 Opener at LaPlace only to lose to another Chevy upstart, Lee Shepherd. The final round times were 8.61/160.71 to 8.73/149.35. Lee had topped 160 on three consecutive runs. Team Jenkins was now falling behind. They weren't yet overly concerned but perhaps became so after failing to qualify at the NHRA Cajun Nationals eight-car show. At this time, they laid off racing at any more AHRA events, using the extra time to develop more power, and it paid off. At the NHRA Division 1 Opener at Englishtown, the team won over Iaconio, who broke in the final. Even more astonishing was the Low ET time slip Larry was given: an 8.44. The speed was not given, but Zul had Top Speed at 159, and to run 8.44, it was thought the car would have had to do more than 160. Lombardo never ran anywhere near that time again at legal NHRA weight. True or a figment? The next Division 1 final at Cayuga came down to Iaconio and Lombardo again with the same results. Larry's 8.59/157.89 (Low ET and Top Speed) stopped Iaconio's 8.61/157 for the money. The next event was the NHRA Springnationals at Columbus. Larry qualified #8 with an 8.74/158.45 (Top Speed). But he was upset in the first round, when Bobby Yowell's 8.85/154 nipped his 8.86/156.79 to the finish line. The third NHRA Division 1 race saw another Iaconio-Lombardo Pro Stock final, and Lombardo now made it three straight with a final 8.61/156.25 that covered Frank's 8.68/155. The fourth NHRA Division One race was held at Maple Grove, and this time, Lombardo faced a different challenger in the final. It was Division 4 regular Lee Shepherd. Lombardo got a good light, and his 8.76/154.63 held on to win over Lee's quicker 8.72/153. Earlier, Larry had set both Low ET and Top Speed at 8.62/156.25. It didn't matter who was driving for Jenkins, but his cars always did well at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals. 1978 was no different. Although he only qualified #4 with an 8.66/155.97, Larry managed to make his way into the final. He improved to 8.65/155.70 in the first round, to beat Don Nicholson's new Fairmont at 8.75/153. A second-round 8.64/156.52 beat Andy Mannarino's AMC at 8.79/153, and he improved even more in the semifinals, where an 8.63/155.77 stopped Joe Satmary's 8.69/155. The only trouble was, Glidden also debuted a new Fairmont and was running 8.5s at will. The final was a foregone conclusion, with Bob's 8.55/154 winning easily over Lombardo's 8.71/155.17. These two would also meet in the final at the NHRA Grandnationals run in Canada. Only seven cars showed for the eight-car field, and Larry's 8.66 got him the #4 spot. He beat James Cook in the opening round with an 8.79, and a semifinal 8.66/155.44 took out Dempsey Hardy's 8.76/154. Once again, Bob made it look easy, he even pulled the 'chute way early, and his 8.55/144 beat Lombardo handily at 8.72/155.17 (Top Speed). Photo from 1977.

Notes: Former Butch Leal California Flash powered by a destroked Hemi. Bliss was at LaPlace on March 19 for the NHRA Division Four opener. He qualified #3 in the eight-car field with an 8.77/158.45. The car came up ailing in the first round, and his 9.86/151.51 lost to the only other Mopar in the show, Phil Nichols. The next Division Four race was held at Green Valley Raceway on April 16. Once again, he qualified #3, but this time with an 8.80/155.97. In the opening round of eliminations, his 8.90/153.32 beat Shelby Jester's 9.08/135. But in the semifinals, eventual winner Lee Shepherd stopped his 8.95 with an 8.67. Cork won the August 1978 Division 4 Points Meet at State Capitol Raceway in Baton Rouge over none other than Lee Shepherd!

Notes: Also used a 340-inch engine. | Don's season started at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. Things didn't go so well. He made two sub-par passes with a best of 9.16. He and crew chief Jon Kaase changed engines and hoped for better results. Unfortunately, after waiting in line for six hours for one last qualifying attempt, the two of them watched as qualifying ended just two cars in front of them. It was a tough break. At the NHRA Gatornationals, Don qualified #5 with an 8.65/156.79. But in the process, he hurt his good engine. After changing engines, he ran 8.69/157 to beat Joe Satmary's 8.78/155 in round one, before losing to Bob Glidden's 8.59/151 in round two with an 8.73/154. At the NHRA Cajun Nationals, his 8.65 qualified #4 in the eight-car field. But in the opening round of eliminations, his off-pace 8.89/152.80 lost to Sonny Bryant's 8.74/155. On May 7th, he was at Englishtown for the NHRA Division One opener."Dyno's" 8.61 qualified #2 behind Richie Zul's 8.58. He really stepped it up in the first round, where his 8.52/157.61 beat Bernie Agaman's 8.73/157. But in the semifinal, his 8.60/157.34 lost to Frank Iaconio's 8.57/153.

Notes: Frank won his first national event at the 78 Gatornationals over a redlighting Bob Glidden. Photo from 1978 US Nationals. Also 8.666/155.44 at Pomona Winters 2/78 (#3 qualifier), and 8.60 at Gainesville. | Frank Iaconio started his season at Tucson for the AHRA Winternationals. It was an eight-car field, and his 8.91/151 qualified #3. He beat Tom Chelbana in round one, before losing a close race in the semifinals that saw his 8.94/151.51 fall to Sonny Bryant's 8.94/153. At Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, his 8.66/155.44 qualified #3, and an opening-round 8.68/157 beat Randy Humphrey's 8.92/153. In round two, his 8.72/154 stopped Chelbana's 9.00/146, but a semifinal 8.73/157.34 lost to eventual winner Bob Glidden's 8.69/154. Frank won his first NHRA National event at the NHRA Gatornationals. He qualified #2 with an 8.60/157.61 behind Glidden's 8.54/153. In the first round, his 8.66/155 beat Mark Yuill's 8.80/154. An 8.67/155 in round two took out AMC's lone hope in the field, Wally Booth, at 8.70/154. He ran Larry Lombardo driving Bill Jenkins similar SRD-built Monza in the semifinals, and Frank's 8.68/155 prevailed over Lombardo's 8.70/155. He was up against Glidden in the final, and Bob had been running about a tenth faster all through eliminations. Smart money was on the Pinto to win, but Bob fouled away an 8.58/159 while Frank eased it through with a 9.06/123.45 to pick up the money. Frank was runner-up to Lombardo at the NHRA Division 1 Opener at Englishtown when the Monza broke on the line in the final. He repeated that finish at the next Division 1 race held at Cayuga. His 8.61/157.61 finished second best to Larry's 8.59/157. He didn't run as well as he would have liked at Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals. His 8.75/155.17 only qualified #9, and it set up a first-round meeting with low qualifier Warren Johnson. Warren was over a tenth quicker (8.63) in qualifying, so Iaconio took a chance and fouled. He had to try as he still ran 8.87 while Johnson advanced with an 8.74. He was also runner-up to Lombardo at the Division 1 race at Maryland, where Larry's 8.61/156 topped his 8.68/155.70 in the final. An 8.64/156.52 qualified #2 at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals and an opening-round 8.68/156.52 advanced. But in round two, he slowed to 8.71/156.25 and lost to Joe Satmary's 8.65/157. Frank's next stop was back at Maryland for the US Pro Stock Open. Unfortunately, there he lost in the first round. He followed the NHRA tour to Canada for the Grandnationals, where he ran 8.66 to qualify #3 in the eight-car field. Frank got a great light in the first round, that saw his 8.77/153.58 hold off Ronnie Manchester's quicker 8.72/154, but, in the semifinals, his 8.73/154.63 lost to eventual winner Glidden's 8.55/149 in his new "boxcar" Fairmont.

Notes: Rivera qualified #6 at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals with an 8.77/155. He improved to 8.73/155 in a first-round victory over John Hagen's 8.86/154, and in round two, his 8.79/154 advanced over a crossed-up Wally Booth. His run ended in the semifinals, where his 8.82/155.44 lost to Larry Lombardo's 8.77/153. He qualified #8 at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals with an 8.687/157.34. He beat Virgil Brunner in the first round, with an 8.83/155. In the second round, his 8.86/155 lost to Lombardo's 8.68/156. He then went to Fremont for the NHRA Division Seven race. His 8.61/156.79 qualified #2 in the eight-car field but in the opening round of eliminations, his 8.64/157.61 lost to Mark Yuill's 8.64/157 in a very tight race. NHRA held its Cajun Nationals at State Capitol Raceway near Baton Rouge at the end of April, and it was a tough eight-car show. Rivera was the first alternate with an 8.73/155.70 best. But he had out-qualified Lombardo and Kevin Rotty, among others. He was at OCIR for the next NHRA Division Seven race in May. He qualified #7 at 8.80, and his 8.85/142.63 lost to Randy Humphrey's 8.73/154 in the opening round. Also, 8.66 at Sacramento CA 6/18/78.

Notes: Bryant qualified #1 at the AHRA Winternationals with an 8.80/153.84 (Low ET and Top Speed). He beat Jerry Janke and, in the semifinals, stopped Frank Iaconio with an 8.94/153. He lost to Kevin Rotty's 8.91/151 in the final with a 9.00/152. At Pomona, he was the number 4 qualifier at 8.744/155.97. He lost to a holeshot by Larry Lombardo in the first round, when his 8.77/152 fell to Larry's 8.80/154. On April 2, he was at Fremont for the NHRA Division Seven race. He qualified #1 for the eight-car field with an 8.59/155.70. He improved to an 8.57 (Low ET) in the opening round of eliminations to beat Randy Humphrey. His consistent 8.59/156.79 beat Kevin Rotty's 8.74/150 in the semifinal. He faced Lee Hunter in the final, and Hunter had been running 8.7's all day. So it looked like he had this race in the bag. But Bryant slowed in the final as both cars ran 8.75 with the win light coming on in Hunter's lane. At the NHRA Cajun Nationals, his 8.73/159.17 qualified on the "bump" for the eight-car field. A first-round 8.74/155.17 upset "Dyno Don" Nicholson's 8.89/152. But in the semifinals, both he and his opponent, Lee Shepherd, ran 8.84 (Bryant at 153.32), and Lee got to the stripe first. Bryant was at Tulsa on May 7 for the AHRA Springnationals. He qualified #3 in the eight-car field with a 9.04/149.25. He sure improved on that time in the first round, where his 8.79/153.84 beat Kenny Hilger's little Chevette at 9.10/149. His 8.83/151.07 advanced when opponent Shepherd blew a transmission in the semifinals. He faced the similar big block Camaro of Warren Johnson in the final, and there was no stopping Sonny on this day as his final round 8.88/156.23 (Top Speed) scored the victory over WJ's 8.99/155. He was runner-up to Rotty again at the NHRA Division 7 race at OCIR. Sonny qualified #1 at 8.67/156.52. An even better 8.62 (Low ET) at 156.52 stopped Larry Johnson's 8.88/152 in round one. In the semifinals, Randy Humphrey's 8.75/156 could do nothing to stop Bryant's 8.64/157.32. He faced Rotty in the final, and despite running 8.62/157.06, he lost to Kevin's quicker-leaving 8.77/159. Bryant did not race at Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals. He was at Sacramento on June 18 for the NHRA Division seven race. An 8.64/155.45 qualified #2. He then ran 8.61/156.23 over a fouling Hunter in round one, and an 8.62/155.98 in the semifinals stopped Gary Hansen's 8.80/151. He ran his best time of the weekend, an 8.59 at 156.26, to win over over Mark Yuill's 8.75/153. He also won the fourth NHRA Division Seven race held at Bonneville. An opening round 9.05/145.64 beat Tom Chelbana and a 9.03/146.11 beat Hansen in the semis. In the final, he set Low ET with a 9.01 at 146.35, winning when Rotty fouled against him. Earlier, during qualifying, he had also set Top Speed at 149.01. He did not race at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals or Canada for the NHRA Grandnationals. The final Division 7 race was run at Beeline Dragway in August. Sonny ran 8.93 to qualify #3. He lowered that time by a tenth in the first round, where his 8.83/150.00 beat Chelbana. A semifinal 8.84/150.75 trailered Hunter's 9.01/149 and moved him into the final for another Rotty vs. Bryant showdown. This time, Sonny held the upper hand, and his final 8.89/151.51 beat Kevin's 8.91/153. He qualified #10 at Ontario for the NHRA World Finals with an 8.79/154.37, but his 8.82/153.84 in the first round, lost to Lombardo's 8.72/155. The best NHRA times were 8.660 at Seattle and 155.97 at Pomona Winters.

Notes: It was getting near the end for the AMC entries in NHRA Pro Stock competition in '78. But Booth still had a good year and finished ninth in the NHRA Pro Stock year-end standings. At the season-opening Winternationals at Pomona, Wally's 8.82/153 qualified #10. In the first round, he dropped #2 qualifier Warren Johnson with a quick-leaving 8.68/154 that beat Johnson's quicker 8.65/157. But in the second round, against Gordie Rivera, he got crossed up and shut off to a 10.25 loss. At Gainesville, for the NHRA Gatornationals, a strong 8.65/156 qualified the car in the #6 position. An opening round 8.79/156 beat Lee Hunter's 8.85/154, but a second-round 8.70/154 lost to Frank Iaconio's 8.67/155. He ran a strong 8.65 to qualify #3 in the eight-car field at the NHRA Cajun Nationals. In the opening round, his 8.78/155.17 beat Dempsey Hardy's 8.83/154. But in the semifinals, he and Bob Glidden had a great race with Bob's 8.66/156 beating the AMC's close 8.69/155.97. On May 21, he was at Edgewater for the NHRA Division Three race. There he set Low ET and Top Speed at 8.65/156.25. He reached the final against Joe Satmary only to have the car break on the line. Booth could only watch as Satmary ran 8.83/155 for the victory. Booth was the only AMC car in the field at all of those events, but at the Division Three race held at Indianapolis on June 4, their numbers doubled as Andy Mannarino also qualified his AMC for the show. Booth still outqualified Andy with his 8.70/155.44 coming in at the #3 spot compared to Andy's #4 position. Another 8.70/156.79 in the first round, beat Larry Peternel's Mopar at 9.12/150, but he again faced off against Glidden in the semifinals. It was again close with the Ford's 8.67/158 nipping the AMC's 8.68/155.97. Both AMC's showed up for the NHRA Springnationals, and Booth's 8.73/155.44 qualified #6 while Andy's got the #12 spot in the field. But both went down in the first round. Booth's late 8.92/152.80 lost to Don Campanello's 8.96/151. His next stop was at Martin, Michigan, on June 24 for another NHRA Division Three race. Booth qualified #2 with an 8.71/155.44 behind Glidden's pole setting 8.62/158. In round one, Wally's 8.73/154.10 beat Peternel's 9.08. He faced off against the only other competitive AMC car in the semifinals, and his 8.75/154.37 sent Mannarino packing at 8.98/150. The final was against Satmary, with the outcome being a reversal of what had happened at Edgewater earlier in the year. Satmary's Camaro broke on the line, and Wally ran 8.69/154.90 for the victory. The cars were back at Edgewater on July 9 for the NHRA Division 3 race, where he qualified #3 behind Joe Satmary's Camaro and Bob Glidden's new Fairmont with an 8.81. An improved 8.79 took out John Frech, but Satmary got some revenge in the semifinals with his 8.78/153 beating Booth's 8.79/154.37. Both AMC entries qualified at the NHRA Summernationals, with Andy's leading the two by getting the #8 spot while Booth got the #15 position. But Booth surprised Johnson in the first round, running an 8.70/155.17 to beat Warren's 8.80/154. A round two 8.73/153.84 trailered Mark Yuill's quicker 8.67/156, but he came up against Glidden in the semifinals. Bob had been running 8.5s with ease, and despite Booth running another strong 8.70/154.10, he was still almost two-tenths behind Bob, who ran an 8.54/149 (pulling the 'chute early) to advance. He did not follow the NHRA tour to Canada for the Grandnationals or attend the PHR Championships. He was also absent from the final NHRA Division Three race held at Beech Bend. His next national event showing came at Indy for the NHRA US Nationals, where he failed to qualify. He did win the NHRA Country Boy Open at Cumberland International raceway on September 9. It was an eight-car show, and he beat Roy Hill's 9.08/154 in the first round, with an 8.84/152.78 and a semifinal 8.89/151.77 took care of Lamar Walden's 9.33/145. He faced Jim Kinnett in the final, and his 8.84/152.54 got the victory over Jim's 8.89/154. A couple of weeks later, he was in Seattle for the NHRA Fallnationals. He qualified #13 and ran 8.75/154.90 to beat Sonny Bryant's much quicker 8.66/154 in the opening round. But eventual winner Glidden, stopped his advance in round two with an 8.52/157 covering Booth's 8.67/153.84. The best NHRA times were 8.651 at the Cajuns and 156.79 at Gainesville. Wally also ran 8.70/154.10 at Englishtown and 8.68 at Pomona.

Notes: Humphrey did not run with a partner in 1978 (he joined up with Bob Lambeck in 1979). Also, ran 8.831 at 1978 Winters and 154 at 1978 Indy. | He was at Seattle on May 7 for the NHRA Division Six opener. His 8.73 (Low ET) at 151.51 qualified #1 for the eight-car show. An opening round 8.80/152.80 beat Mike Rendel's 9.06/149, and a semifinal 8.79/153.06 beat Mardy Maltais' 9.58/112. He faced Mark Yuill in the final, and it promised to be a close race as he had also won his semifinal race with an 8.79. The final was close, with Yuill running another 8.79 to win over Randy's close 8.80/150.50. The following week (May 13), he was at OCIR for the Division Seven race. An 8.76 qualified #3; he repeated that number in the first round, (at 154.63) to beat Gordie Rivera's 8.85/142. In the semifinal, his 8.75/156.52 got beat by Sonny Bryant's 8.64/157. The next week, he was at Firebird Raceway for the next NHRA Division Six race. He qualified #2 with a 9.01/152.33, and in the first round, his 9.04/152 beat Jim Van Cleave's 9.52/120. Randy had a little nap on the line in the semifinals, and his 9.06/151 lost to Mardy Maltais' 9.19/146. On June 4th, Randy was runner-up to Mark Yuill at the NHRA Division Six race at Portland. He did not go to Columbus to race at the NHRA Springnationals. The third NHRA Division Seven race was held at Sacramento in mid-June, and Humphrey qualified #5 with an 8.70/155.98. He fouled away an 8.85/153.59 against Kevin Rotty in the first round. Rotty advanced with an 8.70/153. On July 9th, he was at Woodburn for the fourth NHRA Division Six race. He lasted until the semifinals, where his late 8.87/154.63 lost to Van Cleve's 8.97/152. He also did not compete at the NHRA Summernationals at Englishtown or the NHRA Grandnationals in Canada. Randy qualified on the "bump" at Indy for the NHRA US Nationals with an 8.78. He improved to 8.73/154.90 in the first round, to beat John Hagen's 8.82/154, but in round two, he fouled against Joe Satmary, who ran 8.73/154. QUalified at 8.76/153.32 at NHRA Seattle and then ran two straight 8.700 times in eliminations to make it two rounds. His second 8.700 fell to Larry Lombardo's 8.64.

Notes: After crashing at Gainesville, Andy joined Dick Maskin in this AMC Hornet entry. On June 4, Andy was at Indianapolis for the NHRA Division Three race. His 8.84/152.02 qualified #4 in the eight-car field, and an opening-round 8.97/150.25 advanced over a fouling John Frech. In the semifinal, Joe Satmary also fouled against him, and he ran a 9.62/108.17 to move into the final. His final-round opponent was low qualifier Bob Glidden, who was running 8.6's with ease. Andy fouled in the final, shutting down to 19.26/38.07, while Glidden ran 8.71/140 for the victory. A week later, he was at Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals. He was the slower of the two AMC cars that qualified as his 8.800/153.84 gave him the #12 spot in the show. Unfortunately, that set up a first-round meeting with Glidden that saw Andy's 8.89/152.80 lose to Bob's 8.73/151. Both AMCs qualified in the top half of the eight-car field at NHRA's Division Three race held at Martin, Michigan, on June 24. Andy's 8.84/153.32 got the #4 spot. He opened eliminations with an 8.81/151.26 that beat Harold Martin's 9.69/140, and in the semifinals, he faced the similar Hornet entry of Wally Booth. Wally's car was much stronger on this day as his 8.75/154 easily got the measure of Mannarino's 8.98/150.50. Early in July, he was at Edgewater for the next NHRA Division Three race. He qualified #4 at 8.94 and looked to have an easy first-round match against Dave Avery, but the Hornet broke, and Dave got to solo into round two. Andy qualified #8 at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals with an 8.76/153.80. An opening Round 10.25/115 advanced when Ronnie Manchester broke. In round two, his 8.79/153.06 lost to Larry Lombardo's 8.64/156 in Bill Jenkins' Monza. He then went to Martin, Michigan, for the PHR Championships. An 8.77 qualified #4 and an opening-round 8.81/141.06 beat Frank Parker. In round two, his 8.80/154.37 beat Dempsey Hardy's 8.93/148, but in the semifinals, Lombardo stopped him once again. Andy's 8.91/155.17 lost to Larry's 8.82/152. At Indy, for the NHRA US Nationals, Andy's 8.78/154.63 qualified #15. He coasted to a 12-second pass to beat a fouling Kevin Rotty in the opening round, but a second-round 8.823/153.06 fell to Frank Iaconio's 8.71/155. Andy qualified #6 at Seattle for the Fallnationals at 8.697/154.37. He beat Mike Rendel in round one, 8.69/154.63 to 8.96/150. Frank Iaconio got him again in round two, 8.53/156 to 8.67/154.37. Andy wrapped up the year with a #9 qualifying effort at Ontario, 8.770/156.25. But that meant meeting Bob Glidden in round one, a race Bob won, 8.61/153 to 8.789/154.37.

Notes: Ran 8.879/154.37 debut at 78 Pomona Winters. | John qualified on the "bump" at Ontario for the NHRA World Finals with an 8.85/154.90. He had one of the two Mopars that qualified for the field, and in the first round, the two were matched. Hagen got an easy solo and ran 9.02/151.77 to advance when Randy Humphrey broke on his burnout. But in round two, Hagen’s off-pace 9.03/151.77 lost to Frank Iaconio's 8.68/155.

Notes: Lost the quickest side by side race in history to Bob Glidden at the NHRA Summernationals, 8.58 to 8.80. (Then, in a later round, Glidden and Richie Zul set yet another combined quickest mark, 8.53 to 8.66). | Dempsey won the NHRA Division 2 opener at DeSoto Memorial Speedway on April 16. He had set Low ET and Top Speed at 8.77/155.70 before beating Roy Hill's 8.85/153 in the final with an 8.80/154.63. A couple of weeks later, he was at Baton Rouge for the NHRA Cajun Nationals. A tough eight-car field saw such notables like Larry Lombardo and Kevin Rotty fail to qualify. Dempsey's 8.73/155.70 qualified #7. But his opening round 8.83/154.90 lost to Wally Booth's 8.78/155. At Columbus, for the NHRA Springnationals, his 8.78/154.10 qualified #11. He surprised Lee Shepherd in the first round, where his 8.86/153.06 beat Lee's quicker, but later 8.83/152. But in round two, he had the same thing happen: his quicker 8.87/153.06 lost to Don Nicholson's 8.89/153. Hardy qualified #9 at Indy for the NHRA US Nationals with an 8.74. That set up a first-round meeting with low qualifier Bob Glidden. Dempsey knew he had to take a chance on the tree. He gambled and lost, fouling away an 8.78/154.63, while Glidden advanced with an 8.64. Best NHRA national event times were 8.690 at the Grandnationals and 155.70 at the Cajun Nationals.

Notes: Bobby qualified the wild Colt on the bump at NHRA Columbus at 8.851/155.44. He won an upset first round match over Larry Lombardo, 8.850/154.90 to 8.860/156.79, but then dropped an 8.75/150 to 8.890/154.37 decision to Bob Glidden in round two. That was Bobby's only NHRA national event of the year. He spent most of his time on the IHRA and match race trail. We need to confirm the third digit at Columbus round one. Photo is of the car in IHRA and match race trim. This hood scoop was illegal for NHRA competition.

Notes: Lee qualified #9 at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals with an 8.81/154.10, but unfortunately for him, that set up a first-round meeting with low qualifier Bob Glidden. Hunter improved slightly to an 8.770 at 153, but he lost to eventual winner Glidden's 8.56 (Low ET) shot. At the NHRA Gatornationals, an 8.780/155.17 qualified the car in the #14 spot. In the first round, he faced the lone AMC car in the program, the Hornet of Wally Booth, and an 8.85/154 lost to Booth's 8.79/156. Lee ran well at the rain-delayed Bakersfield March Meet. It was a sixteen-car field, and in the opening round of eliminations, his 8.86 advanced when his opponent, Ray Cunningham, fouled. Tom Chelbana fouled against him in round two, so Hunter's 8.85/153.06 moved into the semifinals. There he faced Sonny Bryant. Sonny's big-block Camaro had been running 8.6's on every pass, so he knew that he was tough to beat. Hunter picked up over a tenth in their race, but it still wasn't enough as his 8.74/154.63 lost to Bryant's 8.63/155. On April 2, he scored a victory at the NHRA Division 7 race at Fremont. Hunter qualified #4 in the eight-car field with an 8.72/153.06. Another 8.72 at 152.80 beat Chelbana's 8.84/153 in round one. A semifinal 8.71/154.37 beat Mark Yuill's 8.75. He faced Bryant in the final, and this time, he got some revenge from his loss to him at Bakersfield. Both ran 8.75, but the "win" light came on in Lee's lane. After winning at Fremont, it was surprising to see Lee's name among the non-qualifiers for the next NHRA Division Seven race held at OCIR. Hunter was at Sacramento on June 18 for the third NHRA Division Seven race. His 8.71/154.11 qualified #6, but he fouled away an 8.85/151.01 in the opening round against eventual winner Sonny Bryant who advanced at 8.61/156. The next NHRA Division Seven race was run at Bonneville Raceway early in July. Lee ran 9.20/144.24 to beat Dale Falk in the opening round. In the semifinal, his 9.17/146.35 fell to Kevin Rotty's 9.11/148. Lee was the first alternate at NHRA Indy at 8.800/154.90 and at Ontario for the NHRA World Finals with a best of 8.852/153.58.

Notes: Campanello started his season at Tucson for the AHRA Winternationals, where his 9.03/149 qualified #6 in the eight-car field. He lost to eventual winner Kevin Rotty in the first round. Don ran really well at Pomona, qualifying #7 with an 8.808/153.58, but the race was rain-delayed, and he could not return for the rain date. Gainesville was his next stop for the NHRA Gatornationals, where he ran 8.84/155.17 to qualify #15. Another 8.84 at 154 in the first round, lost to Warren Johnson's 8.70/156. Don was at Englishtown on May 7th for the NHRA Division One opener. He qualified #5 in the eight-car field, and he ran an excellent 8.75 at just 141.23 in the opening round of eliminations. It just wasn't enough to beat low qualifier Richie Zul's 8.56/158.

Notes: Jim was at Orlando, Florida, on June 18 for the third NHRA Division Two race. Unfortunately, in round one, his troubled 10.01 lost to Charlie Peppers' 9.18. He debuted a new Duster at Suffolk on July 9 and won the fourth NHRA Division Two race. The car was consistent, running 8.84/152.80 in round one, to beat Carl Hobson's 9.05/149 and another 8.84 at 153.84 to defeat Richie Zul's quicker 8.75/155. He faced Dempsey Hardy in the final, and his 8.91/152.80 won when Hardy fouled. Kinnett qualified #13 at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals. His 8.71/154.37 lost to Richie Zul's 8.70/155 in a very close race in the opening round of eliminations. Jim was at Miami-Hollywood on July 30 for the final NHRA Division Two race. He ran 8.92/154.90 (Top Speed) in the opening round before his 8.95/154.30 lost to Bob Glidden's new Fairmont at 8.71/153. Shortly after that (August 13), he was at Martin, Michigan, for the PHR Championships. It was a sixteen-car field, and his 8.82 was the fastest Mopar, qualifying #6. But he hurt the engine and was unable to run in eliminations. At Indy, for the NHRA US Nationals, he had one of three Mopars that made the field. His 8.77/154.90 got him the #14 spot in the show. In the first round, his 8.78/154.77 lost to Lee Shepherd's 8.67/153. The following week (September 9), he was at Cumberland International Raceway for the NHRA Country Boy Open. It was an eight-car field, and in the opening round, his 8.82/151.57 beat Art Gravatt's 9.32/145. He did not receive an ET in the semifinal, but his speed was 151.77 while defeating Sam Carroll's 9.34/121. He went up against Wally Booth's AMC in the final, and the two had a good race that saw the Hornet's 8.84/152 get the victory over the Duster's 8.89/154.90 (Top Speed). He did not race at Seattle for the NHRA Fallnationals. Jim scored a big win near the end of the year (November 19) at the Turkey Trot Nationals in his new Volare. Former Fun City Flyer, former Arlen Vanke car. We also have 8.63/155.70 times for this car at match race weight. Best NHRA National Event times were 8.710 at the Summers and 154.90 at Indy.

Notes: Photo from 1977. Ran 8.87/153.84 at NHRA Pomona CA 2/78. Jean was at Fremont on April 2 for the NHRA Division Seven race. His 8.76/153.32 qualified #7 in the eight-car field. But even a slightly better 8.74/154.90, lost to Kevin Rotty's 8.58 in the opening round of eliminations. On May 13, he was at OCIR for the next NHRA Division Seven race, but he failed to qualify for the show.

Notes: Ran AHRA and NHRA Division 4. Janke started his season at Tucson for the AHRA Winternationals. It was an eight-car field, and his 9.00/147 qualified #5. This set up a first-round match with low qualifier Sonny Bryant. Sonny's 8.93/153 sent Jerry's 9.10/149 packing for home. Jerry was at Tulsa early in May for the AHRA Springnationals. He qualified #4 with a 9.13/146.34. His 9.15/144.69 beat Jim Steen in the first round, but another 9.15 at 148.26 in the semifinals lost to Warren Johnson's 8.80/154. On June 4, Jerry was credited with an 8.50/152.55 in qualifying #1 at St. Louis for the AHRA Gateway Nationals. The car was rarely an eight-second runner, so the half-second pick-up is debatable. In the opening round, he beat Rich Thomas with a 9.10/154.38, but in the semifinals, he lost a rear wheel while doing his burnout preparing to race Lee Shepherd. Two weeks later (June 18), he was at Alamo Dragway in San Antonio, where he ran 8.96/152 to qualify #2 behind Shepherd's 8.83 for the AHRA Nationals. A first-round 9.03/151 beat Kenny Hilger while in the semifinals, his 9.04/150 beat Phil Nichols' 9.22/145. Unfortunately, he faced Shepherd in the final, and the fellow Texas Camaro took the win. The next AHRA race was the Ozark Nationals held on July 4. Jerry qualified #4 with a 9.06/147.54 and a 9.21/145.89 beat Jerry Haas' 9.22/147 in the first round. Shepherd stopped him again in the semifinals, running an 8.94/149 to beat Janke's 9.16/143. Shortly after that, he was at Riverside for the fourth NHRA Division 4 race. He reached the final only to come up against Shepherd again, and despite running a good 8.94/141.67, he lost to Lee's 8.78/147.

Gary ran 8.78/154.38 at Sacramento on June 18. He attempted to qualify at Ontario for the NHRA World Finals. The "bump" was 8.85, and he was the second alternate with an 8.870 (speed unknown).

Notes: 1977 World Champ. Dyno Don crashed this car. Also ran 8.75 at NHRA Englishtown Summernationals 7/78. | "Dyno Don's" Fairmont was delivered to him from Don Hardy on July 7. Rusty Greer, son of funny car driver, Shirl, painted the car. Nicholson debuted it at the fourth NHRA Division 2 race held at Suffolk. On the car's first full run, “Dyno" grabbed the low qualifying position with an 8.68 (Low ET) at 154.10. By virtue of his low qualifying spot, he got to make an easy first-round solo as the eight-car field was short a car. Unfortunately, Don was late off the line in the semifinals and his 8.81/152.80 lost to Dempsey Hardy's 8.89/148. Shortly after that, he was at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals where he qualified #12 with an 8.79. An opening round 8.75/153.06 lost to Larry Lombardo's 8.65/155 in Bill Jenkin's Monza. Don did not race at either the NHRA Grandnationals in Canada or the PHR Championships, choosing to go to Dragway 42 for the AHRA Grandnationals, where he finished runner-up to Shelby Jester.
