Notes: Morris Johnson Jr. returned to Pro Stock in the ADRL at Memphis with a 2005 Cavalier with an 818 Chevrolet Hemi. Johnson had problems in Memphis running off the pace with a 4.529 158.91. Johnson has been running the plain white Cavalier in B/AA and in local Quick 8 action for the last couple of years. In the first round his reverser broke forcing the crew to push the car back to race John Montecalvo. Morris ran a 4.60 that was easily beat by the 4.11 of Montecalvo. Dw

Notes: Started the season running a 710 cubic inch Probe at Darlington for the IHRA Winternationals. A 6.92/200.04 qualified #7 and in round one, Floyd went 6.93/200.35 to beat Harold Denton's 7.05/198 in the "Party Time" Firebird. In round two, Cheek's 7.00/198.45 lost to Mark Thomas' 6.93/201. This little Probe was always good on 1/8 mile tracks and it was no different when Floyd ran at IHRA's Dixie Nationals at Carolina Dragway in April. He set both ends of the track record while qualifying #1 with a 4.47/161.66. The car was now running an 810 cubic inch powerplant. Cheek went on to win the race by running 4.56/157.84 over Terry Waters' 4.62/153, a 4.57/158.53 beat Billy Huff in round two, and a semifinal 4.58/159.15 beat Carlton Phillips' Beretta. In the final he met Roy Hill in an all-Ford match. Floyd got the jump on the racing school conductor and his 4.56/159.37 held off Hill's 4.55/158. After that, Floyd went to Tulsa for its independent Springnationals meet. Once again, he qualified on the pole with a 6.85/201. He set a 6.84 (speed on run was 202.20) track record in the first round, while beating Robert Duncan. He got the odd-lot single in round two and in the semifinals, a 6.93/196 stopped Darrell Warren. In the final he went up against Huff. The two had a good race, but the Probe came out on top with a 6.91/199, beating Billy's 6.95/199. Next stop on the IHRA trail was Bristol for the Springnationals. Floyd ran 7.02/198.71 to qualify #3. Unfortunately, he fouled in the first round, running 7.09/197.67 and losing to Charlie Garrett's 7.10/188.

Notes: Tim failed to qualify at the IHRA Winternationals, but at the second IHRA event of the season, the IHRA Nitrous Nationals on May 3 at the 1/8 mile Huntsville Dragway, he qualified #8 with a 4.59/160.91 (Top Speed). A 4.62/153.87 in the first round, beat Harold Denton's close 4.64/154, but in round two tire shake forced him to shut down to a 5.91/83.83 loss to Bob Simmons. He lost to low qualifier Denton in the first round, at the IHRA Cornplex Nitrous on May 17. The IHRA Springnationals at Bristol saw another non-qualifier. He ran at Epping on July 19 for the IHRA Northeast Nationals where a 7.18/195.77 qualified #11. A quicker-leaving Todd Tutterow beat him in the first round, with a 7.19/192 to Nabors' quicker 7.17/194.30. In August he was at the Nebraska Motorplex for the IHRA Mid America Nationals. He qualified #12 with a 7.16/194.13, but lost to Carlton Phillips in the first round, with an ailing 9.08/102.83. A best of 7.21/195.43 kept him out of the field on August 30 for the IHRA World Nationals at Norwalk. The time was only good for #5 alternate. Back at Darlington for the IHRA US Open on September 27, it took a 7.08 just to make the field and Tim's 7.07/202.61 qualified #13. He had the only Pro Stock that topped 200 mph and a first-round 7.29/203.16 (Top Speed) lost to Robert Patrick's 7.08/197. At the season ending IHRA Fallnationals, he again made the field with a 7.12/195.01, qualifying #11. He eased it through with an 8.46/116.56 in the first round, when Morris Johnson Jr. fouled, but Patrick's 7.09/195 beat his 7.18/193.71 in the second round.

Notes: Craig was at Darlington in March for the IHRA Winternationals. He qualified #6 with a career-best (to this point) 6.91/201.56. The run got him into Sonny's 200 mph club. In the first round, he ran 6.93/201.88 to beat Jerry Yeoman. In the second round, his 7.02/199.29 lost to Billy Huff's 6.89/203. He continued to run well at IHRA's second event of the season, the Dixie Nationals at the 1/8 mile Carolina Dragway. A 4.47/160.14 qualified #2 and set a new IHRA 1/8 mile record as Floyd Cheek qualified #1 with a 4.47 but failed to back it up for the record. But an off-pace 4.76/153.37 in the first round, lost to David Jenkins' 4.63/155. He then ran at Tulsa's independent Springnationals, where he qualified #2 in the eight-car field with a 6.87/201. He lost to Huff's 6.85/201 in the first round, with a 6.90/201. He had another great qualifying effort at Bristol for the IHRA Springnationals, where his 7.02/197.97 qualified #2. He beat Steve Williford in round one, with a 7.08/197.45, while in round two, a 7.10/196.67 beat Doug Kirk's close 7.12/197. In the semifinals, he beat Canadian John Konigshofer's off-pace 7.48/188 with a 7.11/196.37, putting him in the final against Robert Patrick. It was a good close final, but Robert's 7.10/194 beat Craig's 7.11/196.97. He finished runner-up at the next IHRA event as well, the Supernationals at Alabama International. Craig qualified #2 for the third IHRA race in a row with a 6.95/200.66, and he advanced past a tire-shaking Harold Denton in the first round with a 7.02/199.11. In round two, tire shake also took out Floyd Cheek, and Craig moved on with a 7.20/196.97. In the semifinals, he outran Tim Nabors' 7.15/188 with a 7.06/198.36, setting up a final-round meeting with Roy Hill. There was no stopping Hill this day, as in the final, he ran 6.94/200 for the victory over Hankinson's 7.08/199.11. Craig was at the Nebraska Motorplex in mid-August for the IHRA Mid-America Nationals. Unfortunately, he ended up as the first alternate with a 7.09/198.80 best. He then went to Norwalk for the IHRA World Nationals. A 7.04/198.50 qualified #13. He fouled away a 7.14/195.80 in the first round against Mike Bell, who advanced with a 7.05/196.

Notes: Terry started the '92 season at Darlington for the IHRA Winternationals where a 7.14 best failed to qualify. At the second IHRA event, the Nitrous Nationals at the 1/8 mile Huntsville track, a 4.60/159.82 qualified #11, but he lost early. He lost early again at the next stop on the IHRA tour, the Cornplex Nitrous Nationals where he qualified #12 with a 7.38/188.48. Terry failed to qualify for the next three IHRA events, the Springnationals, the Summernationals, and the Empire Nationals where a 7.25/191.40 best was good for #1 alternate. He improved to a 7.16/193.21 to qualify #8 at the IHRA Northeast Nitrous Nationals at Epping and in the first round, a 7.22/192.06 beat Gary Van Vallis. An off pace 7.38/191.89 lost to Billy Huff's 7.14/197 in round two. He skipped the next few IHRA events before returning at the IHRA North American Nationals at Epping. A 7.27 failed to make the field. Another non-qualifier came at Darlington for the IHRA US Open where a 7.18 best was good for #9 alternate.

Notes: Roy Hill did not have an enjoyable start in '94. He was at Darlington for the IHRA Winternationals, where he ran 7.08/199.60 early in qualifying. He came back out for another qualifying attempt. The car got out of shape and ended up flying 20 feet into the air, then barrel rolling down the track and over the guardrail. It was a pretty horrific wreck, but Hill was OK. In April, he was back on the IHRA tour for its second event of the season, the Dixie Nitrous Nationals at Carolina Dragway. It was a 1/8 mile track, and Roy's 4.49/159.77 qualified #3. The car was consistent, running 4.50/158.75 to beat Steve Spiess in the opening round and another 4.50 at 159.74 to beat Robert Patrick's 4.53/158 in round two. He slowed slightly to a 4.51/158.33 in the semifinal, but that was more than enough to beat Charlie Garrett's 4.67/153. He faced Floyd Cheek in an all-Ford final, and while Floyd qualified #1 with new track records of 4.47/161, he had slowed somewhat during eliminations to high 4.5s. Hill had a slight edge going into the final, but Cheek got out on him, and his 4.56/159 got the victory over Hill's slowest run of eliminations, a 4.55/158.25. It was a close race. His next stop was at Tulsa for its annual Springnationals race. A 6.88/199 qualified #3 in the sixteen-car field, and a 6.93/200 beat Darrick Nykaza in the first round. In the second round, he got out of shape and crossed the centerline losing to Darrell Warren. In the first week of June, Hill was at Bristol for the IHRA Springnationals. Four Fords qualified for the field, and his 7.03/199.20 (Top Speed and just shy of his own 199.95 track record) was the second quickest of the blue oval bunch but #4 overall. In the opening round, his 7.09/197.54 dropped Jim Revis' 7.19/195. In the second round, eventual winner Robert Patrick strapped a slight holeshot on him, and his 7.12/194 beat Roy's 7.11/196.07. The Ford's were really starting to perform on IHRA's big-inch Pro Stock class, and it showed at Alabama where Hill's 6.88/202.61 (Top Speed and Low ET) qualified #1 for the IHRA Supernationals. There was no stopping him on this day. No other car ran a "six" during eliminations, and Hill's was running them with ease. A 6.90/201.02 in the first round beat Patrick's 7.06/194. In round two, he belted out a 6.98/191.32 over John Konigshofer's 7.07/196. Garett's 7.14/190 in the semifinal lost to the T-Bird's 6.94/199.82. In the final, he faced #2 qualifier Craig Hankinson, and Roy ran another 6.94 at 200.08 for the victory over Hankinson's 7.08/199. He totally dominated the Pro Stock program of the race. His next stop was at New York International in July for the IHRA Empire Nationals. His 7.04/197.93 was the second quickest of the six Fords that made the field and was #5 overall. A 7.10/197.10 in the first round defeated Tim Nabors' 7.12/198. In round two, he fouled away a great 6.95/199.82 against Harold Denton, who advanced with a 7.07/199. The following week (July 17), he was in Morocco, Indiana, at U.S. 41, for the IHRA Summernationals. Cheek qualified #1 at 6.87, but Hill was right behind at 6.90. Fords took three of the top four spots in qualifying. He easily got past the first two rounds. His 6.89/201.38 over a fouling Terry Leggett in round two was the Low ET of that round. But in the semifinal, he had problems and shut down in a loss to Billy Huff's 6.99/201. Twenty cars showed up at Virginia Motorsports Park in August, and Hill qualified #1 with a 6.84/202.11. He went on to win, stopping Patrick in the all-Ford final,6.89 to 6.95. He debuted yet another new Haas-built T-Bird at the Nebraska Motorplex in mid-August for the IHRA Mid-America Nationals. The first pass with the new car in qualifying was 7.09. He improved to 6.98/198.85 to qualify second to Patrick's 6.97/199. Once again, he was tough to beat, and no one did. In the first round, Nabors shut off with tire shake, and Hill ran 6.95/199.64 to advance. Jerry Yeoman fouled against him in round two, and Hill ran 6.94/199.86. Another 6.94 at 199.64 in the semifinal beat Huff's 6.96/199. He faced Patrick in the final, and the Mustang driver shut down due to tire shake while Roy reset the track record to 6.91 at 200.00 to take the victory. We need to confirm that the Dinwiddie 6.84 was the 6.849 we had listed already. Please confirm the third digit if you know it.

Notes: 1993 IHRA World Champion. Ran 786 inch motor, too. | Doug started his season at Darlington for the IHRA Winternationals. He was running the 786 combo there to qualify #3 with a 6.93/199.82. He went on to win the race by stopping Roy Hill in the first round, with a 6.95/200.93, a 7.04/200.93 advanced past a broken Jerry Yeoman in round two, and a 6.94/200.93 stopped Terry Walter's 7.15/194 in the semifinals. In the final, he faced Tim Nabors and Doug ran a 6.96/198.15 to get the victory over Tim's 7.05/195. Kirk followed that up by winning the next IHRA event as well, the Bama Nationals in April. It was a 1/8 mile track and Doug set a new track record 4.49 (also a new IHRA 1/8 mile record) in qualifying #1. His speed on the run was 159.77. Kirk was tough, running steady 4.5's to win. A 4.54/158.70 beat Terry Housley and in round two, a 4.59/158.87 beat Robert Patrick's 4.64/156. In the semifinals his 4.57/157.72 beat Charlie Garrett's better 4.53/157. This time he met Terry Leggett in the final. Terry was no slouch running 4.50 twice during the race, but in the final he fouled away a 4.52/157 that made Kirk's 4.51/159.60 the winner. He was hoping to make it three out of three at the third IHRA race of the season, the Springnationals at Bristol. He almost did it, coming away with a runner-up finish. Doug qualified #1 with a track record 7.02 at 197.88. He beat Chris Hunt in round one, with a 7.06/197.88 and in round two a 7.14/197.80 beat Darrick Nykaza. In the semifinals, he beat Floyd Cheek's Probe with a 7.10/197.67. This put him into the final against Rickie Smith. It was a close race, but Smith took the win with a 7.11/196 beating Kirk's 7.15/196.03. He returned to his winning form at the IHRA Empire Nationals where once again he reset the track record while qualifying #1 with a 7.02 at 197.32. He had a bit of luck when in the first round, he ran an off-pace 7.28/196.16, but still won over Yeoman who shut off due to tire shake. In the second round, he advanced with a 7.11/196.76 when Craig Hankinson fouled. Another 7.11 at 196.33 beat John Nobile in the semifinals. In the final he faced off with Cheek. Floyd was about a tenth off in performance and that’s how they finished with Doug's 7.15/196.67 scoring his third IHRA event win in four tries over Cheek's 7.22/191. Throughout these four races, Kirk had been running the 786 motor, but he went to an 802 in July for the Mountain Motor Nationals at Maryland International. The race was rained out, but not until after qualifying and round one of eliminations. Kirk qualified #2 with a 7.03/197.97 and he won his first-round race with a 7.06/197.23. Then the rains came and the race did not resume. Atco was the next stop on the IHRA circuit for the Summernationals. Doug continued his domination. He qualified #2 with a 6.93/198.67. He beat Nykaza in round one, with a 7.02/197.75. A second round 717/197.23 beat Hunt in round two while in the semifinals, both he and Hill ran 7.02 (Kirk at 197.80), but Doug got the win. In the final, he met low qualifier Harold Denton in the "Party Time" Firebird. Kirk gave Denton a bit of a driving lesson as his 6.99/198.67 beat Harold's quicker 6.97/205. After winning four out of five IHRA races thus far in '93, Doug looked like a sure bet to win the IHRA Northeast Nationals at New England Dragway. He went back to the 786 engine for this race and qualified #2 with a 6.96/200.93. All the other Pro Stock drivers must have let out a moan when in the first round, Kirk set Low ET and Top Speed at 6.93/201.47 while beating Nykaza's 7.08/197. He advanced past a fouling Mark Thomas in round two with a 7.02/201.25, but in the semifinals, Denton put him out with a 6.99/200 to Doug's 7.09/200.44.

Notes: Doug set Low ET in qualifying #1 for the IHRA Winternationals with a 6.85 at 203. The 6.85 reset the IHRA ET record. In the opening round of eliminations, his 6.91/201.92 beat David Jenkins' 7.11/195. But in round two, his 6.96/200.93 lost to Robert Patrick's 6.92/201. In mid-April, he was at Carolina Dragway for the IHRA Dixie Nationals. Kirk qualified #9 with a 4.57/159.03. He didn't hang around in eliminations for long, as Billy Huff's 4.75/155 in the opening round defeated his 4.96/156.38. Bristol was his next stop for the IHRA Springnationals. There he ran 7.05/198.85 to qualify #7. He and arch-rival Huff duked it out in round one, where Kirk's 7.08/197.67 sent Huff's 7.18/196 packing for home. In round two, Kirk's 7.12/197.02 lost to Craig Hankinson's 7.10/196. IHRA's next event was the IHRA Supernationals held at Alabama International on June 19. Doug ran 6.97/199.64 to qualify #4. A first-round 7.02/198.28 took out Mark Thomas' 7.20/197, but in round two, his late 7.03/198.67 lost to Charlie Garrett's 7.07/192. He got his first and only IHRA victory of the year at the IHRA Empire Nationals held at New York International. There he had run 6.99/201.83 to qualify #2 behind Floyd Cheek's 6.98. He improved to 6.97/200.75 in round one, to stop Steve Williford's 7.11/196. In round two, he stayed consistent with a 7.00/200.57 to beat John Nobile's 7.07/199. Patrick fouled against him in the semifinals, so Kirk eased it through with a 7.92/163.30 to advance. He faced Cheek in the final, and Floyd had the advantage; he had run 6.97, 6.94, and 6.93 to reach the final. But Doug picked it up in the final and ran 6.91/203.11 for the victory over Cheek's 6.96/201.

Notes: Tim was at Darlington in March for the IHRA Winternationals. His 6.96/201.34 qualified #13. In the opening round, his 6.99/200.04 fell to Rickie Smith's 6.92/201. He failed to qualify at the IHRA Dixie Nationals, where his 4.65/158.73 best was the second alternate. The next IHRA event was the Springnationals held at Bristol in mid-June. Nabors' 7.07/196.29 qualified #9. He slowed to 7.13/195.65 in the first round, but it was still enough to beat John Nobile's 7.15/196. John Montecalvo fouled against him in round two, so Tim advanced with a 7.18/194.84. He lost to eventual winner Robert Patrick in the semi-final. Shortly after that, he was at Alabama International for the IHRA Supernationals. Nabors qualified #14 at 7.08/195.65. He survived the first round with a 7.14/193.29 over a tire-shaking Billy Huff. A 7.13/193.42 in round two covered Carlton Phillips' 7.21/193. His run ended in the semi-final, where his 7.15/188.16 lost to Craig Hankinson's 7.06/198. His next stop was at New York International for the IHRA Empire Nationals. He ran 7.10/198.23 to qualify #12, but a 7.12/198.23 lost to Roy Hill's 7.10/197 in round one.

Notes: Terry started the '93 season by setting the IHRA ET record to 6.90 while qualifying #1 at the Winternationals. His speed on the run was 200.53. In the first round, he beat Rick Jones' 7.11/184 with a 6.96/199.86. He continued to look strong in the second round with a 6.98/199.20 defeating Carlton Phillips' 7.08/197. Unfortunately for Terry, in the semifinal the car fell; flat, running a losing 7.56/150.07 against Doug Kirk's 6.94/200. At the next IHRA event, the 1/8 mile Bama Nationals on April 18, he qualified strongly again, running a 4.50/157.17 for #2 spot. He ran another 4.50 at 158.47 in the first round, over Robert McDonald's 4.64/154. In the second round, a 4.52/157.23 took care of Rickie Smith's 4.59/155. A 4.55/156.27 beat Tim Nabors 4.62/155 in the semifinal and put him in the final against Doug Kirk. It would have been a good race with Kirk running a 4.51/159 to a 4.52/157.78, but Terry lit the red eye and had to settle for runner-up. He qualified a little farther down the chart at Bristol for the IHRA Springnationals when his 7.13/195.18 held for #7 spot. He ran 7.13 again in the first round, at 196.42 to beat Roy Hill's ailing T-Bird. A holeshot-aided 7.18/196.24 beat Charlie Garrett's 7.10/194 in the second round, but in the semifinal he slowed to a 7.20/195.35 that lost to Smith's 7.11/196. Things were looking good with three races under his belt and at least a semifinal finish in each. That was about to change. At the IHRA Empire Nationals at New York, a 7.12/196.85 qualified #3, but tire shake slowed him to a losing 7.31/195.43 in the first round. He then attended the Mountain Motor Nationals at Maryland on July 14. Terry qualified #14 with a 7.31/194.88. He beat a sleepy Harold Denton in the first round, with a 7.13/194.51 to Denton's 7.03/196. Then the rains came and washed out the event. He was back into the sixes at Atco for the IHRA Summernationals on July 18. A 6.99/198.15 qualified #5, but a first-round holeshot by Floyd Cheek (7.09/195) beat his 7.05/195.56. Another holeshot did get him in the first round, at the IHRA Northeast Nationals at New England. He qualified well with a 6.99/200.13 for the #4 spot, but a 6.98/200.53 lost to Carlton Phillips' 7.05/198 in the opening round. He was at the Nebraska Motorplex on August 15 for the IHRA Mid-America Nationals, but after qualifying #8 with a 7.17/192.92 he was unable to run and alternate Ed Machacek replaced him in the field. At the IHRA World Nationals, he continued to qualify well, a 7.08/195.99 gave him the #6 spot. A first-round 7.14/195.90 beat Phillips' 7.28/191, but in the second round, Craig Hankinson's 7.19/194 beat his quicker 7.18/194.59. In September, he ran a 7.02/199.33 to qualify #12 at the IHRA North American Nationals. He lost a close first-round contest to Robert Patrick's 6.96/198 to Terry's right there 6.97/201.29. He was back at Maryland for the IHRA President's Cup Championships and a 6.94/199.60 qualified #7. John Montecalvo's 6.95/199 beat his 7.00/199.02 in the first round. At the season-ending IHRA Fallnationals at Bristol, he qualified #11 with a 7.08/194.21. He improved to a 7.02/195.01 in the first round, to down Garrett's 6.99/195, but Hill's 6.95/199 in the second round stopped his 7.01/195.43. It was a good year for Terry as he qualified for every IHRA race and finished sixth in the season long IHRA points chase.

Notes: Eli and his team started racing IHRA Pro Stock full time in 1993. The Purvis Ford team represented Ford in the IHRA, while Bob Glidden represented Ford in the NHRA. The team scored their first national event win at Norwalk in 1993, then won at Epping, and then won at Bristol! - Eli Patrick | Robert started the '93 season at Darlington for the IHRA Winternationals. There he ran 6.99/198.19 to qualify #7. He improved to a 6.96/197.62 in the first round to beat Floyd Cheek, but an off-pace 7.19/197.06 lost to Terry Walters' 7.12/193 in round two. The second IHRA race of the season was the 1/8 mile Bama Nationals held on April 18. Patrick qualified #8 with a 4.52/158.31. Once again, he went up against Cheek in the first round, and again the outcome was the same, with Robert's 4.62/156.84 beating Floyd's quicker 4.58/156. In round two, he lost to the eventual winner Doug Kirk when his 4.64/156.84 lost to Kirk's 4.59/158. The team had trouble at Bristol for the IHRA Springnationals, and Patrick's 7.18/193.63 best in qualifying was good for the second alternate. Things went even worse at New York International at the end of June for the IHRA Empire Nationals. A 7.27/193.92 best was only good for the fourth alternate spot. Maryland International held its annual Mountain Motor Nationals on July 14, and although it got rained out, MIR ran qualifying and the first round of eliminations. Robert qualified #6 with a 7.17/193.50. He won his first-round race with a 7.20/193.25 over Walters' 7.25/192. Then the rains came and halted the proceedings. A few days later (July 18), he was at Atco for the IHRA Summernationals, but the gremlins stepped in, and the best pass he could make was 14.98/52.06. We needless to say, he failed to qualify. The next IHRA race was the Northeast Nationals at New England Dragway. Robert qualified #9 with a 7.04/198.45. He slowed to a 7.20/193.05 in the first round, losing to Charlie Garrett's 7.01/196. The team did not attend the IHRA Mid-America Nationals at the Nebraska Motorplex, but they were back on tour at the IHRA World Nationals. Until Norwalk, the team had been running a 765 stump puller, but now the team debuted a 786 combo. The car seemed to pick up, leading opening day qualifying with a 7.18/192. He then improved on Friday night to 7.04/194.38, qualifying second to Doug Kirk's 7.03/198. A 7.11/193.17 beat Walters' 7.21/192 in the first round, while in round two, another 7.11 at 193.09 beat Billy Huff's 7.19/196. In the semifinals, a consistent 7.10/192.80 took out Craig Hankinson's 7.15/194. He moved into the all-Ford final against Cheek. The two had a good race, with Patrick taking his first-ever IHRA victory with a 7.08/194 over Cheek's 7.14/196. He doubled up by winning the next IHRA race as well, the North American Nationals, on September 12. Robert qualified #5 with a 6.95/197.84. He won a close first-round race over Terry Leggett's T-Bird with his 6.96/198.23, beating Leggett's 6.97/201. In round two, his driving ability got the win when his 6.99/199.15 beat Harold Denton's quicker 6.94/200. In the semifinals, he advanced with another "six," a 6.96/200.35 over Tim Nabors, whose Lumina broke. He got his second win when Kirk broke against him in the final. Still, Robert's 6.97/199.55 would have been hard to beat. They were still running the 786 at Maryland International for the IHRA President's Cup Championships in October. A great 6.883/200.13 qualified #2. He advanced past a fouling Carlton Phillips in the first round with a 6.93/198.80. In round two, John Montecalvo fouled against him, and he won with a 6.99/198.67. In the semifinals, he came up against Pro Stock veteran Roy Hill. The two had a close race, but Hill's 6.88/199 squeezed past Patrick's 6.90/200.26 for the win. After the team's success after changing from 765 to 786 cubic inches, they must have thought if a little is good, more must be better. For the final IHRA race of the season, the Fallnationals at Bristol, the team debuted an 810 cubic inch motor. Robert got his first pole with a 6.98/197.19 and a 6.97/197.67 beat Rick Jones in the first round. Another 6.97 at 197.84 beat Montecalvo's 7.09/195 in round two, but the car developed problems in the semifinals, and he shut off to a 7.41/158.61 that lost to Mark Thomas' 6.96/199.

Notes: Charlie qualified #6 at the season-opening IHRA Winternationals with a 731 ci engine running 6.99/198.28. A first-round 7.09/198.54 lost to Jerry Yeoman's 7.07/197. At the second event, the IHRA Bama Nationals, a 1/8 mile track, he used the same engine to qualify #5 with a 5.52/157.92. Another 4.52 at 158.25 beat Steve Williford (4.59/155) in the first round. Yet a third 4.52/157.86 beat Chris Hunt (4.58/155) to get him into the semifinal where a 4.53/157.97 lost to Doug Kirk's slower 4.57/157. It was on to Bristol in June for the IHRA Springnationals where a 7.04/194.46 qualified #2. A 7.19/193.79 beat Terry Walters (7.28/192), but he slept in the second round when Terry Leggett's 7.18/196 beat Garrett's quicker 7.10/194.67. At the next event, the IHRA Empire Nationals at New York, he again qualified #2 with a 7.11/196.29 and a first-round 7.18/194.93 beat Mark Thomas (7.24/191) in the second frame a 7.15/193.88 took out Williford (7.20/193). In the semifinal, Floyd Cheek's 7.20/194 beat Charlie's quicker 7.18/195.60. He then ran at MIR on July 14 for the Mountain Motor nationals and although the event was rained out they did get in qualifying and the first-round. A 7.19/192.88 qualified #7, but an off pace 8.79 lost to Ron Miller's 7.26/190.55 in the first round. July 18 saw Garrett running a 6.98/195.43 to qualify #4 at Atco for the IHRA Summernationals. A first-round 7.14/176.33 beat John Nobile (7.30/193). He lost to Floyd Cheek's 7.09/196 in the second round. All these races were run with the 731, but on July 25 he showed up at New England Dragway for the IHRA Northeast Nationals with a bigger 765 engine. A 7.03/196.29 qualified #8 and a first-round 7.01/196.72 beat Robert Patrick (7.20/193). A second round 7.12/195.77 fell to Roy Hill's 6.95/199. At the IHRA Mid-America Nationals at the Nebraska Motorplex on August 15 a 7.12/194.51 qualified #5 and a first-round 7.16/191.81 beat Carlton Phillips (7.21/190). In the second round, a 7.17/191.44 lost to Harold Denton's 7.14/193. It was on to the IHRA World Nationals on August 29. A 7.09/195.48 qualified #8, but tire shake slowed him to a 9.21 in the first round, losing to Cheek's 7.11/195. Garrett continued to qualify in the top half of the field at the next race, the IHRA North American Nationals, where a 6.96/198.19 was #6 on the grid. A first-round 6.93/199.37 beat Jim Revis (7.02/197). He made it into the semifinal before Doug Kirk's 6.95/200 beat his quicker 6.94/199.51. Back at Maryland in October for the IHRA President's Cup Championships, Garrett ran a 6.93/198.67 to qualify #6 and a career-best 6.92 at 198.36 beat Cheek (7.09/192) in the first round. Unfortunately, he fouled against Hill in round two. At the season-ending IHRA Fallnationals at Bristol on October 10, a 7.03/195.31 (#6) kept his qualifying in the top half of the field streak alive. A holeshot by Terry Leggett (7.02/195) beat his 6.99/195.77 and ended his season.

Notes: Charlie opened his season by winning the IHRA Winternationals at Darlington. He qualified his 786 c. i. Firebird #5 in the field with a 6. 91/198.32 and then ran another 6.91 at 198.36 in the first round, to beat John Montecalvo's 7.04/197. In round two he had a tough race against Rickie Smith. Garrett got a slight holeshot and his 6.94/198.19 beat Rickie's quicker 6.93/200. Robert Patrick got crossed up and shut off against him in the semifinals, but Charlie still laid down a 6. 95/197.06. In the final he faced off against Billy Huff. The two Firebird drivers had a good race, but Garrett took the victory with a 6.97/197.06 beating Huff's 7.04/202. IHRA's second race of the season was the 1/8 mile Dixie Nationals at Carolina Dragway. Charlie qualified #5 with a 4.56/157.28 and he improved to a 4.52/158.25 in the first round, to beat Terry Housley. In round two, his 4.55/157.42 advanced when David Jenkins' Firebird broke. In the semifinals, Charlie slowed to a 4.67/153.03 that lost to Roy Hill's 4.51/158. At Bristol, for the IHRA Springnationals, a 7.09/195.01 qualified #14. A 7.10/188.40 advanced past a fouling Floyd Cheek in round one, but in the second round, Garrett had trouble and shut off to a 7.77/149.55 that lost to Canadian John Konigshofer's 7.25/194.
