Notes: Robert qualified #15 with a 4.66/150.90 at the IHRA Nitrous Nationals held on May 3 at the 1/8 mile Huntsville track. He lost to Doug Kirk in the first round. At the third IHRA event, the Cornplex Nitrous Nationals, a 7.33/189.19 qualified #10 (ahead of Billy Huff, Tim Nabors, and some other big names), but again he lost early. He failed to qualify for the IHRA Springnationals, but a 7.13/194.67 qualified #9 for the IHRA Summernationals on June 21. He shut down early to an 11.11/79.70 in the first round, losing to Todd Tutterow. He qualified well again at the next IHRA event, the Empire Nationals, when a 7.14/194.38 placed him #10 in the field. A first-round 7.31/188.12 lost to Rickie Smith's 7.19/194. On July 19, he was at Epping for the IHRA Northeast Nitrous Nationals. He qualified #10 with a 7.18/195.10 and almost got past Doug Kirk in the first round. His 7.20/194.83 lost to Kirk's 7.21/195. IHRA's next event was the Bluegrass Nationals held at the 1/8 mile Ohio Valley Race. Robert qualified #14 but once again went out in the first round. This time, Jim Revis' 4.59/155 downed his 4.66/152.36. Robert continued to qualify strongly at the next IHRA race, the Mid-America Nationals at the Nebraska Motorplex on August 16. He ran a 7.15/195.10 to qualify #9. An ailing 8.86/112.72 lost to Steve Williford's 7.21/190 in the first round. Even though he was not getting past the first-round, just qualifying for these races was tough, and he was doing a good job of it. On August 30, he qualified #12 with a 7.17/195.10 at the IHRA World Nationals, and in the first round, he fouled away a 7.20/192.55 against Revis. Everyone was flying on September 13 at Epping for the IHRA North American Nationals. Robert was too hitting a 7.05/197.45 for the #11 qualifier. Another good run of 7.09/196.76 lost to Floyd Cheek's 7.01/196 in the first round. At Darlington for the IHRA US Open, a 7.07/196.37 qualified #11, and he fouled (7.16/195.05) against Kirk in the first round. At the season-ending IHRA Fallnationals at Bristol, Robert ran a 7.13/194.13 to qualify #14. A first-round 7.16/194.21 lost to Robert Patrick's 7.15/195.

Notes: Phillips had raced a Chevy for the first three IHRA events of the season, but he showed up at Alabama International in June behind the wheel of this new Bickel-built Firebird. His 7.06/196.50 qualified #11, and in the opening round, he beat John Montecalvo with a 7.15/189.31. In the second round, he fell off to 7.21/193.05 in a loss to Tim Nabors' 7.13/193. He was the first alternate at New York International for the IHRA Empire Nationals with a 7.15/197.28. In mid-August, he went to the Nebraska Motorplex for the IHRA Mid-America Nationals. His 7.06/197.10 qualified #11. He improved to 7.02/197.15 in the first round, but it wasn't enough as he lost to Jim Revis' 6.96/199.

In round two, he ran 7.34/190.64 to beat Frank Sanchez and, in the semifinals, he took out Billy Ewing. A final round 7.33/191.00 got him the victory over Rickie Smith. He doubled up by winning IHRA's second event of the season, the Springnationals at Bristol. There were 29 cars attempting to qualify for the sixteen-car field and Mauney qualified #2. He beat Terry Walters in the opening round and in round two, he set Top Speed with a 7.48/195.47 to beat Mark Pawuk. Ed Dixon fouled against him in the semifinals and Tommy advanced with a 7.51/187.15. He faced Doug Kirk in the final and a 7.52/187.88 wrapped up his second IHRA victory. The third IHRA event of the season was the Gateway Nationals at St. Louis. Mauney qualified #4 with a 7.43 and after beating Lewis Worden in round one, he lost to Ewing. But that little hiccup didn't slow him down for long as he then won the IHRA Empire Nationals. A final round 7.34/187.93 beat Smith who had his 'chute deploy early in the run. After winning three of the first four races of the season, it seemed he would go on to win quite a few more, but it didn't turn out that way. He failed to reach the finals at Atco's IHRA Eastern Nationals and at Norwalk for the IHRA World Nationals. He did qualify low at Darlington for the IHRA US Open. After an easy first-round win, he beat Jim Yates in round two with a 7.39/185.64. But he lost to Carlton Phillips in the semifinal. At the IHRA Fallnationals at Bristol, there was a race within a race as the lowest eight qualifiers at the IHRA events over the year would race in the Summit Shootout. Mauney was one of the eight, but in the Shootout, he had a close first-round race where both he and Kirk ran 7.43, but Doug got the win light. The next day for the Fallnationals race, Tommy made it into the semifinals before losing.

Notes: Craig attempted to qualify at Darlington for the IHRA Winternationals, but his best of 7.21/195.14 failed to make the field. At. At the 1/8 mile IHRA Bama Nationals, his 4.60/153.45 also failed to qualify (ninth alternate). At Bristol for the IHRA Springnationals, Craig qualified #12 with a 7.15/194.84, but a 7.21/195.05 in the first round, lost to Floyd Cheek's 7.15/194. The next IHRA race was the Empire Nationals and once again Craig made the show running 7.15/193.13 for the #6 spot. He beat Derrick Nykaza's 7.23/192 in the first round, with a 7.17/194.67, but he fouled away a 7.15/195.65 in the second round against Doug Kirk. Notes: Billy qualified #5 at Darlington for the IHRA Winternationals with a 7.37/191. He improved to 7.32/191 in the first round to beat Charlie Buck, while a 7.38/191 beat Gary Hajek's 7.41/188 in round two. He fell off to a 7.43/191 in the semifinals that lost to Roy Hill's 7.30/191. He "only" qualified #13 at Rockingham for the IHRA Pro-Am Championships, and he shut down to 18.36/44.73 in round one that lost to Bob Olson's 7.39/189. He also lost in the opening round at Bristol for the IHRA Springnationals when he took a little snooze on the line, and his 7.41/193 lost to Doug Kirk's 7.61/180. He did much better at Atco, where he ran a best of 7.30/193 and made it into the semifinal before losing to eventual winner Bob Glidden. He ran his career-best (to this point) speed at Milan during the IHRA Northern Nationals held in the first week of July. His 196.50 tied the IHRA speed record that was set there by Jerry Haas. He lasted until the second round before Glidden's 7.25/193 stopped his 7.36/196.50. Glidden went on to win again. The Drag Racing List Winter 87/88, Volume 2, Number 9, listed 7.309. Notes: Harold failed to qualify at Bradenton for the IHRA Winternationals, where he could only run a best of 7.09/192.30. He also attempted to make the field at Darlington for the IHRA Southern Nationals, but his 7.05/188.70 came up short. He did not compete at Cordova for the IHRA Summernationals, nor did he run at the IHRA Empire Nationals, but he was at Maryland International for the Mountain Motor Nationals. It was an eight-car show, and Harold ended up as the fourth alternate with a 7.06/193.54. He failed to qualify for the IHRA Northern Nationals and did not attend any more IHRA national events until the President's Cup Championships at the end of September. Unfortunately, he was the tenth alternate with a 7.03/196.22 best.

Notes: Roy Hill had a great year driving for Joe Penny in '87. He started his IHRA Campaign at the Winternationals, qualifying eighth with a 7.41/185. The car kept on running quicker. In round one, his 7.38/189 beat Bob Harris' 7.51/190. A second round 7.34/190 beat Jim Ruth's "Party Time" Firebird. In the semifinals, he ran his best of the weekend, a 7.30/191 to beat Billy Ewing's 7.43/191. That set up an all-Ford final against Rickie Smith. In the final, Roy's car was unable to stage as it kept creeping forward before fouling. Roy hesitated and then hammered it getting a strange 7.83 time at a speed of 194.80. Rickie won with a 7.17/191. At the Rockingham Pro-Am race, he qualified second with a 7.40/188.67, but he had problems in the first round, and his 8.01/187.11 lost to alternate Kenny Tripp's 7.93/173. Terry Adams' holeshot 7.53/190 beat Hill's quicker 7.44/188 in the semis at the Springnationals. At Atco for the Summernationals, he qualified with a 7.21/192. Hill ran 7.30/191 over Rickie Smith's quicker 7.26 in the semis before losing to Bob Glidden's 7.23 with a 7.27 in the final. Roy set Low ET at 7.25 and ran a career best speed of 196.07 at Milan for the Northern Nationals. He made it into the semifinals before his 7.31/192.30 lost to Smith's 7.28/193. But he won the next race, the World Nationals at Norwalk. There, he set Low ET in qualifying #1 with a 7.31. A first-round 7.32/188 beat Smith while a round two 7.37/189.08 beat Glidden's out of shape machine. A 7.33/190.27 in the semifinals stopped Tim Nabors' 7.44/189 from advancing. In the final he faced Jerry Haas. Jerry fouled and Hill ran 7.32/189.87 for the victory.
