Notes: On July 5, Robinson attempted to qualify at the IHRA Empire Nationals. He ran a best of 7.33/191.93 that was only good for the seventh alternate. Harold ran a best of 7.35/186.60 at Epping, New Hampshire, for the IHRA Northeast Nationals in July. Unfortunately, that time was only good for second alternate. His best time of 7.22, came at Darlington in September for the IHRA US Open. That was only good for tenth alternate in that tough show. He also tried to make the show at the season ending IHRA Fallnationals at Bristol, but a best of 7.39 was the eleventh alternate. |

The big motored cars were allowed to run in '88, but with a 250-pound penalty. Smith figured his big Ford would still be competitive. He was right! At IHRA's season-opening Winternationals at Darlington, he qualified #2 behind Bob Glidden's 500 cubic inch T-Bird with a 7.37/191.48 (Top Speed). A first-round 7.39/190 beat Steve Schmidt, and in round two, he reset IHRA's Pro Stock et record with a 7.36 (IHRA threw out the '87 records) at 190.67 over Mark Clark. In the semifinals, he took out Warren Johnson with a 7.40. That put him into the final against Glidden. It was a good race, with Smith's 7.39/190.27 (New IHRA speed record) beating Glidden's 7.43/185. It was interesting to note that on every one of the eight passes he made at the event, all were over 190. IHRA's next event was the Supernationals. It was rained out on March 6 and did not run until the 27th, but Rickie did it again. He set Low ET in qualifying #1 with a 7.37/189.47. Times of 7.43, 7.42, and 7.41 at 189 beat Morris Johnson Jr., Terry Adams, and Glidden (in that order) to reach the final against Johnson. Another 7.37 at 190.27 gave him his second win over WJ's 7.42/186. Another win came at Rockingham for the Pro-Am Championships. Rickie's 7.31/191.48 (Low ET and Top Speed) qualified #1, and he again worked his way to the final. After an easy first-round, he ran 7.37/191.08 over Jerry Haas, and a semifinal 7.36/191.48 beat Adams' 7.43/187. He met up with WJ in the final again, and the results were the same: Smith's 7.32/191.48 got him his third win in a row over WJ's 7.43/187. |

Notes: Terry started the IHRA season by qualifying #15 at Darlington for the Winternationals with a 7.51/185. He got out of shape and shut off in the first round, giving Rickie Smith the win. At Rockingham for the Pro-Am Championships, a 7.50/181.81 qualified #7. He beat Jim Ruth in the first round, but his late 7.45/187.50 lost to Roy Hill's 7.54/187.11 in round two. The "Bad Bird" was a regular qualifier on the IHRA tour, regularly running in the 7.50s. He also lasted until round two at the IHRA Springnationals at Bristol. There he lost to Smith. At Edgewater for the Summernationals, he qualified #5 with a 7.53/182. He beat Terry Walters in the first round before losing to Darrell Alderman's 7.45/187 with a 7.58/183.29 in the second round. At the PHR Championships (IHRA sanctioned) at US 131, Adams qualified #7 and beat Mike Bazell in the first round. In round two, his 7.60 lost to Billy Ewing's 7.50. On August 24, he was at Norwalk for the World Nationals. He qualified #9 but fouled in the first round against Tim Nabors. In September, he made it into the semifinals at the US Open at Rockingham. He beat Ed Dixon with a 7.46/186.72 and Dean Goforth's Camaro in round two before losing to Rickie Smith in the semis. At Bristol for the Fallnationals, Adams ran 7.40/187 to qualify #4. A first-round 7.46 beat Al Waters and in round two, a holeshot 7.53/176 beat Jim Ruth's quicker 7.47/186. Once again, he was in the semifinals, but his opponent was Bob Glidden, and Glidden's 7.30/190 buried Terry's 7.49/185. Notes: Ewing qualified at Darlington for the IHRA Winternationals with a career-best (to this point) 7.37/187. He then ran 7.41/186 to beat Terry Walters and 7.43/186 over a fouling Pat Musi. A 7.44/186 advanced to the final in the semifinals when Roy Hill fouled away a 7.31/192. It was an all Camaro final where he met Darrell Alderman. He beat Tom Sutton in the first round, with a 7.45/190.67. In the second round, his 7.49/181.81 lost to Tim Nabors' 7.46/189. At Bristol, for the IHRA Springnationals, Billy was a little off his usual pace as he "only" qualified #11 with a 7.62/182.18. In the opening round of eliminations, his 7.69/178.21 fell to Bob Glidden's 7.44/187.11. His next stop was at St. Louis for the IHRA Gateway Nationals. Ewing qualified #7, and he defeated Tim Nabors in the opening round. He lost to Alderman in round two. Milan, Michigan, was the next race on the IHRA tour for its Northern Nationals run on July 6. Ewing qualified #8 with a 7.52/186.72. Another 7.52 at 189.47 in the first round, stopped Terry Adams' 7.60/183. But he lost to eventual winner Glidden in round two. He ran well at Edgewater Park for the IHRA Summernationals. A 7.55/184 qualified #7. He beat Nabors in round one. Then he took out Hill's 7.57 with a quick-leaving 7.62 before fouling against Rickie Smith in the semifinal. He ran even better at Martin, Michigan, for the PHR Championships. His 7.48/184.42 qualified #2 behind Alderman's 7.45/183. An opening round 7.49/180.00 beat a tire shaking Neil Moyer. In round two, his 7.50/180.36 defeated Adams' 7.60/183. Alderman fouled against him in the semifinal, and Ewing advanced with a 7.56/180.00. He faced Smith in the final, and his 7.64/180.00 finished runner-up to Rickie's 7.58/184. Norwalk was the next stop for the IHRA World Nationals held on August 24. Billy qualified #5 but was upset in the first round, by Ed Dixon. No times were recorded in their race. Notes: Tim was one of the hardest running "Mountain Motor" cars running in IHRA in '89. IHRA placed a 300 lb. handicap on the big motors over the 500 ci cars. Tim started the season by qualifying #3 at Darlington for the Winternationals with a 7.35/188.28. He beat Harold Denton, Tommy Mauney, and Nick Nikolis in the semifinal with a 7.38/188.28. He got the win with a final round 7.38/188.28 over Steve Schmidt's 500 ci. Firebird at 7.50/185. At Bristol, for the Springnationals, a first-round 7.51/183.83 beat Ken Koretsky, but in the second round, his 7.54/184.30 lost to the eventual winner Warren Johnson's 7.49/184. IHRA's next event was the Northern Nationals at Milan Michigan on July 2. Tim qualified #9, but lost in the first round, to Koretsky. |

Notes: At the season opening IHRA Winternationals, Harold's 7.19/189.83 was good for sixth alternate. He followed the IHRA tour to the next race, the 1/8 mile Bama Nationals where a 4.64/151.03 was twelfth alternate. At the third event, the IHRA Springnationals, he was unable to get a good run in and was fourteenth alternate. He didn't run at the IHRA Empire Nats, but ran the Mountain Motor Nationals at MIR where a 7.43/185.03 got him fourth alternate. A 7.44/183.03 failed to get him into the show at Atco for the IHRA Summernationals. He skipped the next two events before making an attempt to qualify for the IHRA World Nationals where he again failed to make the cut. He skipped the IHRA North American Nationals before returning to MIR for the IHRA President's Cup Championships. Once again he was close with a 7.28/187.61 good for third alternate. At the season ending IHRA Fallnationals a 7.42/184.99 was fourteenth alternate. |
