Notes: Charlie was in St. Louis on June 22 for the IHRA Gateway Nationals. He qualified #9 with a 7.55/184, and in the opening round, he beat Bob Olson. He fouled against the eventual winner Bob Glidden in round two. The IHRA Northern Nationals was held at Milan on July 6, and Peppers ran 7.57/186.33 to qualify #12. In the first round, his 7.62/185.18 lost to Rickie Smith's 7.44/191. Shortly after that (July 20), he was at Edgewater for the IHRA Summernationals. A 7.65/182.55 qualified #13. But in round one, he lost to Darrell Alderman. He went to Martin, Michigan, on August 3 for the PHR Championships. This turned out to be a costly race for him as he blew his engine on the 7.84/179.28 qualifying pass (#14). Charlie was obviously unable to run in eliminations. Listed times from The Drag Racing List, Volume 1, Number 9, December 86/January 87. Photo from Milan, MI, 1985. |

Notes: Ewing drove the former Johnny Dowey Camaro at Bristol for the IHRA Springnationals. He qualified #4 with a 7.67, and in round one, he advanced when Bob Harris fouled. In round two, his 7.72/180.36 beat Reid Whisnant's 7.96/174. In the semifinals, he faced the car's old owner, Dowey, and Billy's 7.73/180.72 put Johnny's new T-Bird on the trailer. Billy faced Lee Shepherd in the final, and although he ran a strong 7.75/177.51, he lost to Lee's 7.70/183. On July 8, he was in Milan, Michigan, for the IHRA Northern Nationals. A 7.56/183.29 qualified #4. He failed to reach the finals. He was at Norwalk in August for the IHRA World Nationals. Billy's 7.53/182.18 qualified #2 behind Shepherd's 7.48/184. He beat Bob Harris and Jim Ruth before losing to Roy Hill in the semifinals. In September, Ewing qualified #2 at Rockingham for the IHRA US Open with a 7.50. Shepherd led the field with a 7.44. Billy lasted until the semifinal before losing to the eventual winner Rickie Smith. Number 4 in IHRA. |

Notes: Floyd had the strongest Ford on the IHRA trail in '91. It ran well enough to qualify first at the sixth race of the season, the Gateway Nationals. His times were good enough for Low ET and Top Speed, and he made it to the finals before losing to Rickie Smith. He got Smith back in the first round, at the IHRA US Open but failed to get into the finals. At the season finale, the IHRA Fallnationals at Bristol, a 7.17/192.81 qualified #2, but he fouled against Tim Nabors in the first round. |

Notes: Listed ET was run at less than legal weight or at a match race. 1973 Photo. Wayne was at Capitol Raceway for a six-car show. He held the track record at 8.76 going into this race. The cars were run at 6.5 lbs per cubic inch. Gapp got out of shape against Ronnie Sox and shut off to 9.79/139.50 in his first race, but in his second, he ran 8.81 at a new track record speed of 157.71 (I know the number is highly suspect, but that's what was reported) to beat Herb McCandless. In his third race, the Pinto got out of shape again, and Gapp's 9.47/146.78 lost to Richie Zul's 8.99/151. Wayne ran an 8.78 best in a Maple Grove match race over Bill Jenkins. |

Notes: Eli and his team started racing IHRA Pro Stock full time in 1993. The Purvis Ford team represented Ford in the IHRA, while Bob Glidden represented Ford in the NHRA. The team scored their first national event win at Norwalk in 1993, then won at Epping, and then won at Bristol! - Eli Patrick | Robert started the '93 season at Darlington for the IHRA Winternationals. There he ran 6.99/198.19 to qualify #7. He improved to a 6.96/197.62 in the first round to beat Floyd Cheek, but an off-pace 7.19/197.06 lost to Terry Walters' 7.12/193 in round two. The second IHRA race of the season was the 1/8 mile Bama Nationals held on April 18. Patrick qualified #8 with a 4.52/158.31. Once again, he went up against Cheek in the first round, and again the outcome was the same, with Robert's 4.62/156.84 beating Floyd's quicker 4.58/156. In round two, he lost to the eventual winner Doug Kirk when his 4.64/156.84 lost to Kirk's 4.59/158. The team had trouble at Bristol for the IHRA Springnationals, and Patrick's 7.18/193.63 best in qualifying was good for the second alternate. Things went even worse at New York International at the end of June for the IHRA Empire Nationals. A 7.27/193.92 best was only good for the fourth alternate spot. Maryland International held its annual Mountain Motor Nationals on July 14, and although it got rained out, MIR ran qualifying and the first round of eliminations. Robert qualified #6 with a 7.17/193.50. He won his first-round race with a 7.20/193.25 over Walters' 7.25/192. Then the rains came and halted the proceedings. A few days later (July 18), he was at Atco for the IHRA Summernationals, but the gremlins stepped in, and the best pass he could make was 14.98/52.06. We needless to say, he failed to qualify. The next IHRA race was the Northeast Nationals at New England Dragway. Robert qualified #9 with a 7.04/198.45. He slowed to a 7.20/193.05 in the first round, losing to Charlie Garrett's 7.01/196. The team did not attend the IHRA Mid-America Nationals at the Nebraska Motorplex, but they were back on tour at the IHRA World Nationals. Until Norwalk, the team had been running a 765 stump puller, but now the team debuted a 786 combo. The car seemed to pick up, leading opening day qualifying with a 7.18/192. He then improved on Friday night to 7.04/194.38, qualifying second to Doug Kirk's 7.03/198. A 7.11/193.17 beat Walters' 7.21/192 in the first round, while in round two, another 7.11 at 193.09 beat Billy Huff's 7.19/196. In the semifinals, a consistent 7.10/192.80 took out Craig Hankinson's 7.15/194. He moved into the all-Ford final against Cheek. The two had a good race, with Patrick taking his first-ever IHRA victory with a 7.08/194 over Cheek's 7.14/196. He doubled up by winning the next IHRA race as well, the North American Nationals, on September 12. Robert qualified #5 with a 6.95/197.84. He won a close first-round race over Terry Leggett's T-Bird with his 6.96/198.23, beating Leggett's 6.97/201. In round two, his driving ability got the win when his 6.99/199.15 beat Harold Denton's quicker 6.94/200. In the semifinals, he advanced with another "six," a 6.96/200.35 over Tim Nabors, whose Lumina broke. He got his second win when Kirk broke against him in the final. Still, Robert's 6.97/199.55 would have been hard to beat. They were still running the 786 at Maryland International for the IHRA President's Cup Championships in October. A great 6.883/200.13 qualified #2. He advanced past a fouling Carlton Phillips in the first round with a 6.93/198.80. In round two, John Montecalvo fouled against him, and he won with a 6.99/198.67. In the semifinals, he came up against Pro Stock veteran Roy Hill. The two had a close race, but Hill's 6.88/199 squeezed past Patrick's 6.90/200.26 for the win. After the team's success after changing from 765 to 786 cubic inches, they must have thought if a little is good, more must be better. For the final IHRA race of the season, the Fallnationals at Bristol, the team debuted an 810 cubic inch motor. Robert got his first pole with a 6.98/197.19 and a 6.97/197.67 beat Rick Jones in the first round. Another 6.97 at 197.84 beat Montecalvo's 7.09/195 in round two, but the car developed problems in the semifinals, and he shut off to a 7.41/158.61 that lost to Mark Thomas' 6.96/199. |

Notes: Harold started his '92 campaign at the IHRA Winternationals at Darlington where a 7.06 qualified #14. In the first round, a 7.10/188.00 lost to Rickie Smith's 7.02/198.41. He ran at Huntsville's 1/8 mile track on May 3 for the IHRA Nitrous Nationals. A 4.60/155.97 qualified #9, but he failed in his bid to make the finals. At IHRA's third event of the season, the Cornplex Nitrous Nationals, he qualified #1 with a 7.18 (Low ET) at 191.89, but once again failed to make it into the finals. It was on to Bristol for the IHRA Springnationals. There, a 7.15/188.91 qualified #7. A first-round 7.12/194.84 beat John Nobile's 7.19/195. He ran his quickest time of the meet, a 7.10/195.01, in the second round, but lost to Billy Huff's 7.08/196. Denton qualified #1 again at the IHRA Summernationals in Canada with a 7.00/197.06. A first-round 7.11/195.90 beat Bob Simmons' 7.26/191, but in round two a 7.02/195.99 lost to Todd Tutterow's 7.06/194. On July 5, Harold qualified #4 with a 7.08/195.69 at the IHRA Empire Nationals. He had it easy in the first two rounds winning with a 7.09/195.90 over Gary Morgan's ailing 8.10 and a 7.16/195.35 over a fouling David Drongowski. In the semifinal, a 7.16/195.05 lost to Billy Huff's 7.21/193. At the next IHRA meet, the Northeast Nitrous Nationals at Epping on July 19, a 7.07/197.49 qualified #2. In eliminations, he ran 7.11 three times, first at 196.29 over Chris Hunt, second at 196.33 over Doug Kirk's 7.29/195, and third in the semifinal, at 194.72 in a losing effort to Tutterow's slower 7.21/192. Everything lined up on August 16 at the Nebraska Motorplex for the IHRA Mid-America Nationals. He qualified #1 with a 7.04/196.33, good for Low ET and Top Speed. He ran 7.07/195.86 over Bob Simmons' 7.26. A 7.08/195.99 beat Steve Williford, and a 7.09/195.69 in the semifinal beat Carlton Phillips' 7.19/193. In the final against Huff, a 7.07/195.73 took the win over Billy's 7.26/193. At the next race, the IHRA World Nationals at Norwalk, he again qualified #1 at 7.06 (Low ET) at 196.50. A first-round 7.13/194.55 advanced over a fouling Charlie Peppers, and a round two 7.08/195.77 beat Phillips' 7.13/192. He slept in the semifinals, running a 7.06/194.88 only to lose to Jim Revis' 7.14/194. They were back at Epping on September 13 for the IHRA North American Nationals. He qualified #3 with a 6.97/199.37 and a first-round 7.00/199.42 beat a fouling Drongowski. A second round 7.02/197.80 took care of Floyd Cheek's quicker 6.99/198. In the semifinal, he ran another six, a 6.99/198.89 that lost to Chris Hunt's 7.03/197. The Pro Stockers were really flying at Darlington on September 27 at the IHRA US Open. Four cars qualified in the sixes and Denton was one of them with a 6.97/199.20 for the #3 spot. In the first round, his faster 7.11/196.07 lost to Morris Johnson Jr's 7.19/193. At the season-ending IHRA Fallnationals at Bristol, he set Low ET in qualifying #1 with a 7.04/196.67. Unfortunately, a first-round 7.05/197.93 lost to Nobile's slower 7.18/193. |

Notes: Tim was at Darlington in March for the IHRA Winternationals. His 6.96/201.34 qualified #13. In the opening round, his 6.99/200.04 fell to Rickie Smith's 6.92/201. He failed to qualify at the IHRA Dixie Nationals, where his 4.65/158.73 best was the second alternate. The next IHRA event was the Springnationals held at Bristol in mid-June. Nabors' 7.07/196.29 qualified #9. He slowed to 7.13/195.65 in the first round, but it was still enough to beat John Nobile's 7.15/196. John Montecalvo fouled against him in round two, so Tim advanced with a 7.18/194.84. He lost to eventual winner Robert Patrick in the semi-final. Shortly after that, he was at Alabama International for the IHRA Supernationals. Nabors qualified #14 at 7.08/195.65. He survived the first round with a 7.14/193.29 over a tire-shaking Billy Huff. A 7.13/193.42 in round two covered Carlton Phillips' 7.21/193. His run ended in the semi-final, where his 7.15/188.16 lost to Craig Hankinson's 7.06/198. His next stop was at New York International for the IHRA Empire Nationals. He ran 7.10/198.23 to qualify #12, but a 7.12/198.23 lost to Roy Hill's 7.10/197 in round one. |
