Notes: Larry Huff's big Dodge was very competitive in match race trim. Early in July, he was at Fremont for a best of three match against Bill Bagshaw. The Funny Cars of Sush Matsubara and Dave Condit were there also for a best of three match. Condit had to swap motors in the "Plueger & Gyger" Mustang and could not make the first race of the match, so Huff went over to Joe Pisano, owner of Matsubara's ride and asked if they would race him with a 2-second handicap. After the snickering stopped, they agreed. The crowd was really up for the match, and Huff won, running 8.81/155.70 to beat Sush at 6.71/216.89. It was close as the Vega flew past in the traps. In the actual match with Bagshaw, Larry's 8.78/155.70 beat Bill's 8.82/154 in the first race, but Bill came back to win the second with an 8.83/156 over Huff's quicker 8.80/155.44. Larry took the win and the match race victory in the tie-breaker with an 8.87/155.70 to beat Bagshaw's 9.01/155. Later in the month, he faced Dick Landy in a best of three at OCIR. |

Notes: Mike attempted to qualify at the Mountain Motor Nationals on July 14 at Maryland, but a best of 8.48/146.57 was well off the pace (7.38 bump) leaving him as seventh alternate. The only car running slower was Roy Hill at 9.68/95.79. A few days later, on July 18, things improved at Atco for the IHRA Summernationals. Although he didn't qualify, a 7.12/191.97 was fourth alternate ahead of some "big" names. Another week and things again improved as on July 25 a 7.05/197.67 qualified #11 at Epping for the IHRA Northeast Nationals. Mike lost to Tim Nabors' 6.98/199 in the first round, but he was learning fast. |

Notes: Photo from 1998 IHRA Northern Nationals, Stanton, MI. DNQ at 20th best overall with a 6.82/203.46. Nabors had started the season driving is Lumina. The Monte Carlo was ready in time for the IHRA Empire Nationals run in mid-July. Tim qualified #8 there with a 6.85/201.97. An opening round 6.96/200.29 beat the lone Mopar of Doug Kirk, who shut down due to tire shake. John Montecalvo fouled against him in the second round, and Nabors saw the red and advanced with a 10.27/88.75. His run ended in the semifinal, where he lost to Pete Berner's similar Monte Carlo. As mentioned, he failed to qualify for the IHRA Northern Nationals, and he also failed to make the field at Norwalk for the IHRA World Nationals. There, his 6.83/201.43 was the fifth alternate. |

Notes: Animal Jim's legendary Mercury Zephyr Pro Stock was built by Chassis Craft (Greg Kaplin & Woody Mays) in 1979. This was the car that made Animal Jim a major match race star. From 1979 to 1990, it ran in every sanction, circuit, and mode possible. After running legal and Nitrous assisted small block Clevelands, in 1984, "Zeke" went legal IHRA Mountain Motor Pro Stock with a 672" Kaase Ford Hemi. Photo from 1983. Jim ran 7.795/180.00 at ADRA West Salem, OH, 7/22/84. He ran at the MIR Mountain Motor Nationals in August, where he ran 7.85/180.36 to qualify #8. The engine was ailing after qualifying, and in the opening round of eliminations, his 8.74 lost to James Justice's quick-leaving 8.77. In September, he was at Rockingham for the IHRA US Open. Over 30 cars showed up and attempted to qualify for the sixteen-car field, and Jim failed to crack into the field that had a 7.66 "bump." |

Notes: Jerry was at Epping in mid-September for the IHRA North American Nationals. His 6.75/205.88 qualified on the "bump." In the first round, the car broke against Chris Holbrook. Near the end of the month, he was at Maryland International for the IHRA President's Cup Championships. His 6.73/204.98 qualified #12. Once again, he had problems in the first round, and he shut down to 15.85/51.03 in a loss to John Montecalvo's 6.82/203. He failed to qualify at the IHRA World Finals, where he was the third alternate at 6.88/203.92. 1998 IHRA Northern Nationals, Stanton, MI. Qualified 4th at 6.76/204.17 and ran the table to win. He defeated Ed Machacek, Gene Wilson, Doug Kirk, and Tony Gillig. |

Notes: At Bristol, for the IHRA Springnationals, Parris qualified on the "bump" for the sixteen-car field with an 8.37. That wasn't too bad, considering that 32 cars were attempting to qualify. In the opening round of eliminations, his 8.24 beat Harold Denton. But in round two, his 8.30 lost to Pat Musi's 8.28. He was back at Bristol in the first week of August for the IHRA Summernationals. His 8.31 qualified #6 in the sixteen-car field, and he lasted until round two before losing to eventual winner Rickie Smith. The slanted front end was legal at the time. Car was sold to Jim Ruth and became the first Party Time Pro Stocker. IHRA series regular. | 1981 handout/postcard states best in 1980 of 8.08 Sec at over 167 MPH. Finished 5th in 1980 IHRA Points. - MO | Confirmed 8.109 at IHRA Milan 7/20/80. |

Notes: IHRA & Match racer. Number 3 in IHRA. Raced Johnny Dowey's old car at one point. | Keith ran well in IHRA competition in '80. He qualified at every IHRA National event or points meet he attended. At Rockingham for the Pro-Am Championships, he lasted until the second round before losing to the eventual winner Ronnie Sox. He was at Bristol for the Springnationals, but unfortunately, his #10 qualifying spot paired him up against Ford star Rickie Smith in the first round, and he lost. |

Notes: This was the car to beat on the UDRA circuit. Bob started the season by qualifying on the "bump" at Darlington for the IHRA Winternationals with a 7.51/180. In the first round, he lost to Roy Hill when he had clutch issues and slowed to 7.92/184. He was at Byron Dragway for the UDRA Springnationals in May. Olson ran 7.72/178.92 (Top Speed) to qualify #2. The car was consistent, running 7.74/177 over Gary Duckworth and 7.71/178.21 to reach the finals where he was to meet low qualifier Don Coonce. Don had broken in his semifinal win and was a no-show for the final. Bob ran a solo 7.70/178.21 for the victory. At Bristol for the IHRA Springnationals, the team didn't qualify so well (#14), but they did well in eliminations. In the first round, Hill fouled, and in round two, Bob Glidden got out of shape in his T-Bird and shut off. This put Olson into the semifinal, where he lost to the race's eventual winner Darrell Alderman in Jerry Haas' Camaro. He ran an incredible speed of 182.18 while qualifying #8 at St. Louis for the IHRA Gateway Nationals. Unfortunately, he lost to Charlie Peppers in the first round. The next IHRA race was the Northern Nationals at Milan. Bob qualified #11, but in the first round, he fouled against Hill. At the NHRA Summernationals, the team was #8 in qualifying, and Olson beat Bob Harris in round one, but in the second round, he fouled against Glidden. He had to gamble on the 'tree as Glidden ran 7.41 compared to his 7.63 on the run. Back on his "home" turf, the UDRA, he won the Hoosier Nationals at Muncie. He had only qualified #4 in the eight-car field with an 8.05/178, but he beat Jeff Wick's Arrow in the first round, with an 8.34/167, and in the semifinals, he picked up to a 7.88/179 to beat a wheelstanding Jim Feurer. He was up against low qualifier Bill Kuhlmann in the final, and the two had a great race with Bob's 7.75/179 winning over Bill's 7.72/182.81. The PHR Championships were running under IHRA rules. Bob qualified #5 at 7.54/184.52, but he fouled against Hill in the first round. He then went to Wisconsin International Raceway for the UDRA Summernationals. Bob's 7.88/177 qualified #2 behind Bill Kuhlman's 7.83/185. These two would work their way into the final. Olson ran 7.81/177 over Charlie Hnatek, and he then dropped Jeff Wick in the semifinal. Bill had been running slightly quicker in eliminations, running a 7.78 best. Olson ran the better time in the final with a 7.85/173, but he lost to Kuhlman's quick-leaving,7.90/182. To add insult to injury, Olson had held the track record coming into this race at 7.88, but Kuhlman now reset it to 7.78. He continued to qualify well at Norwalk for the IHRA World Nationals. He got the #7 spot in the sixteen-car field and defeated Terry Walters in the opening round. Unfortunately, he lost to Darrell Alderman in round two. In September, Olson was a little off his usual pace at Rockingham for the IHRA US Open Championships. He only qualified #10, and he lost in the opening round of competition. 237 IHRA, UDRA racer.
