Notes: Don started the '81 season at the AHRA Winternationals. He qualified #1 with an 8.23. A first-round 8.32 beat Jerry Haas' nitrous Monza at 8.61. In the semifinals, Lee Hunter got out of shape and "Dyno" advanced to the final against Pat Musi. Despite a quicker 8.23/166, Don had to settle for runner-up to Musi's 8.26/167. He really shook up the troops at Darlington on March 22 for the IHRA Winternationals when he qualified #1 with a 7.81/176 (Low ET and Top Speed). He ran the same numbers again in the first round, over Keith Albritten's 8.26/167. Unfortunately for Don, he had a nap in the second round and his 7.86/175 lost to Rickie Smith's 8.07/171. In April, it was like the good ol' days when "Dyno Don" met "Grumpy Jenkins" with Ray Allen driving at a best of three match race a Connecticut. Nicholson beat Allen two straight with a track record 7.87/176.17 before Allen came back to win the last race with a 7.96/169. Nicholson flexed his muscle again at the IHRA Pro-Am at Rockingham on May 3. He qualified #1 with a 7.82 (Low ET) at 176.81 and went on to win over a motor blowing Smith in the final with an off pace 7.90/175.09. He then retired for a while, selling the car to Harold Denton who would retain Don's help for the next couple of races. It should be noted that the car was runner-up at the next IHRA event, the Springnationals, where they lost the clutch in the final. Nicholson was the third member of the Holley Seven-Second club with his 7.81 at Darlington 3/81. - Danny White

Notes: "My partner back then was a neighbor of mine by the name of Keith Fowler, who was a big Country music promoter at the time - he had Loretta Lynn, Conway Twitty, and the Oak Ridge Boys under contract. He had originally put his business name "Country Shindig" on our Super Modified car, and when we went to Pro Stock, he put the Oak Ridge Boys on the new car. They were huge stars back then, and they even came out to one of our races, which really helped us promote ourselves. We ran Loretta Lynn's name on the car for a while, too, which was a real popular deal. - Rickie Smith (courtesy Competitionplus.com) | It took a couple of years, but by 1980, Rickie Smith had his Boss 429 combination worked out. Way back in '78, he had opened some eyes when he set Low ET at Bristol for the IHRA Springnationals with an 8.25. He fell off to a losing 8.72 in the first round, of eliminations, and many called it a fluke. In '80, he was low qualifier at quite a few IHRA races. He was also the first to run a 7-second ET under IHRA rules with a 7.99 run in the first round, of competition at Rockingham for the Pro-Am Championships. He improved even more in '81. He started the season at a four-car show in Englishtown in March. Rickie ran times of 8.09/169.81 and 7.99/172.08 to beat Frank Iaconio and Pat Musi. He faced Ray Allen, who was driving Bill Jenkins' Camaro in the final, and a holeshot aided 7.98/172.08 beat Allen's 7.91/171 for the victory. He won the Atmore IHRA series race with a final round 5.00/139.53 over William Parris' 5.33/133. On March 15, he was at Piedmont for a best-of-three-match race against Mike Kennedy. Rickie made a warm-up run and reset the track record to 5.11. He then ran 5.13 in the first race to beat Kennedy's 5.23, and another 5.11 beat the Camaro's 5.19 to win the match two straight. At IHRA's season-opening Winternationals at Darlington, Smith ran 8.07/172.41 to qualify #5 in the sixteen-car field. The top four cars in qualifying were all in the sevens. Smith joined that group with an opening-round 7.99/171 that beat Gary Duckworth. He started to earn his nickname "Tricky Rickie" with a holeshot 8.07/171 in the second round that beat low qualifier Don Nicholson's 7.86/175. His 7.96/173 beat Ronnie Sox's 8.04/173 in Dean Thompson's new Mustang in the semifinals. That put him into the final against Roy Hill. The Mopar driver's times were nowhere near what Smith was running, and it showed in the final where Smith saved his best for last and ran 7.91/174 to beat Hill's 8.44/134. The next IHRA event was the Pro-Am Championships at Rockingham, held early in May. Smith ran 7.85/176.81 to qualify #2 behind Nicholson's 7.82/176. These two would end up meeting in the final. Rickie had a tough race against Warren Johnson in the semifinals, where Smith's 7.96/173.74 beat WJ's 8.05/173 in Jerome Bradford's Monte Carlo. Rickie lost a motor in the final and slowed to an 8.50/119.02 in a runner-up finish to Nicholson's 7.90/175. Two weeks after that, he was at Bristol for the IHRA Springnationals. A 7.91/173.74 qualified #1 and a first-round 7.99 advanced. He beat Chuck Sneed in round two with a 7.94 to move into the semifinals. His competition there was Harold Denton, who had just bought Nicholson's Mustang. Not only had he acquired the car, but "Dyno Don" also was there helping him get used to the car. Denton pulled a huge holeshot that saw his 8.11 beat Smith's quicker 8.03. At the IHRA World Nationals, Rickie lost to WJ in the semifinals.

He picked up to a first-round 7.87/172 over Sam Carroll's 8.17/168. A 7.91 took care of Paul Gant in round two, and in the semifinal, he beat Roy Hill's 8.17/167 with a 7.92/172. Unfortunately for Johnson, when the car was weighed after his semifinal run, the car was found to be too light. He was disqualified, and Hill was reinstated into the final. At the second IHRA event, the Pro-Am Nationals at Rockingham, he qualified #4. He made it into the semifinal before losing to Rickie Smith's 7.96/173 with an 8.05/173.74. On May 17, Warren grabbed a big win at the IHRA Springnationals at Bristol. He qualified #4 with an 8.01/173.41 behind the seven-second Mustangs of Smith, Ronnie Sox, and Harold Denton. Johnson dipped into the sevens with a first-round 7.97. In the second round, a 7.99 beat Hill's 8.24. Sox was caught napping in the semifinal, and Johnson's 8.10 beat Ronnie's 7.99. Denton's former Don Nicholson Mustang lost the clutch in the final, and Warren motored to a 7.99/171.42 victory. In June, he was runner-up to Smith at the IHRA World Nationals and then traveled to St. Louis for the AHRA Gateway Nationals. He qualified #1 with Low ET and Top Speed at 7.93/172.09. No one else ran quicker than 8.10. He beat Jim Feurer's Zephyr in the first round, with an 8.03/170.13. In the semifinal, an 8.13/169.18 beat Chuck Aronson. A final round 8.37/167 gave Warren the win over Gary Duckworth's 8.61/159. Another win came at the IHRA Northern Nationals, where he stopped Sox in the final. At Bristol for the IHRA Summernationals, Warren used an 8.08/171.42 to qualify #3. He ran 8.09, 8.23, and 8.09 to make the final against Sox. Ronnie reversed the finish of the previous IHRA race by downing WJ's 8.11/168.85 with a 7.99/172. Sox kept the heat on Johnson by once again beating WJ in the final at the IHRA US Open, where his final round 7.89/174 thumped the Monte Carlo's shut off 8.25/161.87. Warren was running 8.0's there while Ronnie was running 7.8's. Warren also won the Atlanta Mountain Motor Challenge in October. He qualified #2 with 7.91/174 and won a critical semifinal race against Smith. Smith ran a quicker 7.92 but lost to WJ's 7.94. Warren beat Gary Brown in the final for the title. The car was too radical for NHRA tech. The 7.93 at Gateway was the first AHRA seven. Won IHRA Spring Nationals at Bristol with a 7.999 at 171.42. Also ran 7.93 at AHRA Gateway Nats 81 and 7.90/174.20 in Atlanta Mountain Motor Challenge race on 10/10/81 (won over surprise finalist Gary Brown).

Notes: Sox started his season at Darlington for the IHRA Winternationals. He qualified #4 with a 7.98/173.07, becoming the fourth member of the Holley Seven-Second Club. He lasted until the semifinals before eventual winner Rickie Smith's 7.96/173 beat his 8.04/173. At Rockingham, for the IHRA Pro-Am Championships, Sox ran 7.86/174.90 to qualify #3. Again, he lasted until the semifinals, but this time a broken driveshaft yoke stopped him in his race against Don Nicholson. The next IHRA event was the Springnationals at Bristol. Sox ran 7.92/173.07 to qualify #2 just a tick behind Smith's 7.91. Ronnie improved to a 7.91 in the first round, and he set Low ET in round two with a 7.89 that beat Mike Kennedy. But for the third race in a row, he lost in the semis. This time his late 7.99 lost to Warren Johnson's 8.10. Everything clicked at Norwalk for the IHRA World Nationals. He qualified #1 with a 7.92; he won his semifinal race over Keith Albritton, and in the final, he scored the victory with a 7.91/175 that dumped Johnson's 7.99/167. Early in July, he was at Connecticut for an eight-car show. He set Low ET in the first round, with an 8.07 but fouled against Don Campanello on the run. He made it into the final at the IHRA Northern Nationals but had to settle for the runner-up spot as Johnson got the best of him there. These two would meet again in the final at Bristol for the IHRA Summernationals. Sox qualified #2 with a 7.94/173.41 while Smith was low at 7.93/176. Johnson followed these two with an 8.08/171. Ronnie ran 7.97 and 8.01/173 to get into the semifinals. A semifinal 8.06 advanced when Harold Denton fouled. Sox picked it back up to a 7.990/172.41 victory over Johnson's 8.11/168. The team's next stop was at Budds Creek for the Mountain Motor Nationals. The Dean Thompson Mustang was sporting a 612 cubic inch Boss engine for this event. A power failure had knocked out the timing clocks, so there were no ETs recorded. Sox ran well, and he reached the semifinals to run against Smith. Unfortunately, the lights didn't count down on Sox's side of the tree, and a red light came on. Management offered a rerun between the two cars, but Sox declined. Shortly after that, he was at Brainerd for the Quaker State Championships. He reached the final only to foul away an 8.01 while Denton picked up the trophy with an 8.05. It was then back to Bristol for the IHRA US Open Championships. Sox knocked them dead as he qualified #1 with an unheard of 7.79/176.49. He backed it up for a new IHRA record. Sox then dominated the race. An opening round 7.91/172.08 beat William Paris, a round two 7.87/173.47 beat Smith, and in the semifinals, he beat Denton. In another WJ vs. Sox final, his 7.89/174.08 put away Johnson's Monte Carlo at 8.25/161. Confirmed low qualifier in Atlanta Mountain Motor Challenge at 7.88/173.74 on 10/10/81, but tossed rods in a first-round 7.97/155.97 win and was done for the day. Ronnie finished number 1 in IHRA in 1981.

Notes: Johnson was at Rockingham in April for the IHRA Pro-Am Championships. It was a sixteen-car field, and his 8.27 best was the first alternate. After that, he went to Darlington on May 4 for the rain-delayed IHRA Dixie Nationals. He set Low ET there and beat Rickie Smith in the final. Won 1980 IHRA Spring Nationals at Bristol with an 8.139 at 166.05. He qualified #1 at 8.09 (Low ET) at 167.59. He then beat Pat Patterson and Billy Ewing in the first two rounds. Ronnie Sox's transmission broke in the semi-finals, so WJ ran 8.16/163.33 to advance. He stopped Smith again in the final. The next IHRA race was the Northern Nationals held at Milan Dragway in July.WJ qualified #4 for the eight-car field with an 8.19 but was upset by John Brumley in the first round. In the first week of August, he was at Bristol for the IHRA Summernationals. He once again set Low ET while qualifying #1 at 8.07/167.56. He ran another 8.07 in round two when Harold Denton fouled against him. But the car broke against "Dyno Don" Nicholson in the semi-final. Then came his dominating performance at Maryland International for the Mountain Motor Nationals. He qualified #1 at 7.92, then ran 7.91/167 over Lee Edwards' 8.20/165 in round two. That was followed by a 7.82/175.43 (Top Speed) in the semi-final over Bill Jenkins' 8.18. He went up against Pat Musi in the final. Musi was the only other car in the sevens at this race. But Musi slowed to 8.04/171 in the final that finished runner-up to WJ's 7.82/175.09. Shortly after that,he was at Brainerd for a four-car battle during the Quaker State Championships. He and Nicholson really put on a show. Both were running 7.8's, with WJ running 7.89/173.74 over John Hagan in one race. The final came down to Nicholson and WJ.Johnson fouled away a 7.90/174.41 (Top Speed),while "Dyno" ran 7.87/174 for the victory. In September, he reset the IHRA ET record to 7.91, qualifying at Rockingham for the IHRA U.S. Oper. His speed on the run was 173.41.The nearest anyone could come to him during qualifying was Smith a 8.02/174.WJ lasted until the semi-final before his off-pace 8.21/170 lost to eventual winner, Musi's 8.14/168. 1980 IHRA Pro Stock world champion. Johnson was the second member of the Holley Seven-Second club with his 7.91 at Rockingham 9/80. Did the team run a hint of nitrous in Budds Creek?

Notes: Glidden did not race at Darlington for the IHRA Winternationals as it was run on the same day as the NHRA Gatornationals, and Bob competed there. He made up for it by winning the second IHRA race of the season, the Bayou Nationals. There, he qualified #2 behind Bruce Allen, and in the final, he defeated Roy Hill. In May, he had nothing but bad luck at Rockingham for the IHRA Pro-Am Championships. The car made all kinds of power, but tire shake kept him from qualifying for the sixteen-car field. Glidden could keep a handle on it long enough to qualify #6 at Bristol for the IHRA Springnationals with a 7.51 at only 171.75. He improved to 7.44/187.11 in round one to beat Billy Ewing's 7.69/178. But the car got out of shape in round two, and Bob shut it down against Bob Olson, who advanced with a 7.70/178. He finally got the car dialed in at St. Louis on June 22 for the IHRA Gateway Nationals. Glidden reset both ends of the track record in qualifying #1 for the sixteen-car field with a 7.32/193.13. On Sunday, he made four passes between 7.36 and 7.39 to win. He stopped Chuck Aronson in round one, Charlie Peppers fouled against him in round two, and he took out Rickie Smith in the semifinal. He faced Hill in the final once again, and his 7.39/189.47 beat Hill's 7.59 for his second IHRA victory of the year. His third came at the next event, the Northern Nationals held at Milan Dragway on July 6. Bob led qualifying by almost a tenth of a second. His 7.29/193.96 got the pole ahead of second-place Allen's 7.38. No one was able to run 7.3s in eliminations except for Glidden. A 7.36/191.89 beat Barry Shirley's 7.64/184 in the opening round. His 7.37/193.96 beat Ewing in round two, and in the semifinal, he beat Smith with a 7.35. He faced Darrell Alderman in the final, and the Camaro broke. Glidden ran 7.41/191.89 for another victory. The wins continued at Edgewater Park for the IHRA Summernationals. Once again, he had almost a tenth on the field as his pole-winning 7.37/189.47 led Hill's #2 qualifying 7.48. Again, no one else was able to run 7.3's in eliminations. Bob reset the track record in the first round with his 7.36/189.47 that beat Aronson. Olson fouled against him in round two, so he "only" ran a 7.41/188.67 to advance. Alderman broke against him in the semifinal, so Bob's 7.38/189.07 moved into the final. It was another all-Ford final as he faced Smith's Mustang. Bob's 7.38/189.87 (new track speed record) defeated Smith's 7.52/185. Considering how busy Bob was in NHRA competition with a totally different combination, it was amazing that he could run so well in IHRA competition. He was brought back to earth at the PHR Championships held on August 3. He made one unofficial timed run of 7.34/183. In actual qualifying, the best he could do was 7.48/186.72 for the #3 spot in the field. in the opening round, his 7.55/184.42 beat alternate Leroy Roeder. But that dreaded tire shake returned in round two, and he had to abort his run against Barry Shirley. Barry ran 7.76/177 to advance happily. The other IHRA racers knew that was just a chink in the armor, but Glidden lost again at Norwalk for the IHRA World Nationals. He qualified #1, but the ailing T-Bird lost to Mark Pawuk's 7.70/177 in round one. He continued to have trouble at Rockingham for the IHRA US Open held on September 7. He ran a great 7.21 to lead the field, but tire shake did him in once again. He fell to Dean Goforth in the first round. Glidden fans didn't need to worry. He was back in the game at Bristol for the IHRA Fallnationals. A race within a race was being held as Hurst sponsored the Pro Stock Shootout to be run the day before the Fallnationals. This race was for the eight teams that qualified the best at the IHRA events over the year. On Friday, Glidden ran 7.26 and 7.24 to show everyone he was ready. On Saturday, he opened eliminations in the Shootout with a 7.29/192.71 to drop Ewing's 7.57/185. Olson fouled against him in the semifinal, and Bob's 7.27/191.89 moved on. No one had run better than 7.41 in eliminations, and it was Ruth who had run that time. That was who Bob would meet in the final. Ruth gambled on the tree and lost as Glidden ran 7.29/192.30 for the victory and the $15,000 that went with it. So on Sunday, he came into the IHRA Fallnationals as the low qualifier with his 7.26/193.96. He reset the track ET record in the first round with a 7.25 at 193.96 to beat Shirley's 7.66/180. In the second round, his 7.35, while shutting off at 173 (!), beat Hill's 7.54. In the semifinal, his 7.30/190.27 defeated Terry Adams' 7.49/185. There was a new contender that everyone had their eyes on that would face Bob in the final. Buddy Ingersoll's turbocharged V6 Buick had beaten a not-too-happy Smith in the semifinal with a 7.33/192. Bob kept all the big cubic-inch fans happy in the final with a 7.28/193.96 that stopped the Buick's 7.37/189. It should also be mentioned that Glidden had also reset the track speed record earlier with a 194.38. That was the last time Bob ran the big engine in 1986 competition.

Smith ran a best of 7.89 on the way to a runner-up finish to Warren Johnson at the IHRA Pro-Am race at Rockingham on May 2. Both he and WJ ran 7.92 in the final. Rickie's next good showing was on June 20 at Norwalk for the IHRA World Nationals. There he stopped Ronnie Sox in the final with a 7.76/179 to Sox's 7.87/175. His 7.76 was Low ET and he also had Top Speed at a track record 181.08. Another win came at Bristol for the IHRA Summernationals beating WJ in the final while again setting Top Speed, this time at 176.47. And at the IHRA Northern Nationals, while he didn't make the final, he again set Top Speed at 181. - Rick Howard | Bubba Corzine told me he thought Rickie went mid 7.60s in 1982. Notes: First national event seven-second run with a 7.999/172.41 at IHRA Rockingham. Smith was the first member of the Holley Seven-Second club with his 7.99 at Rockingham on 4/20/80. - Danny White | This car became the IHRA's first seven-second Pro Stocker with a 7.99 clocked at the IHRA Pro-Am Nationals at Rockingham, NC, on Sunday, April 20, 1980. - Bret Kepner | Smith changed engine builders for '80. Now he had Jon Kaase preparing his motors which ranged in size from 527 to 652. The engine size most commonly used was the 588. Started the season by qualifying #1 at the IHRA Winternationals with an 8.05/172.41. The times were good enough for Low ET and Top Speed, with the speed being a new IHRA record. Unfortunately, he failed to make the finals. Rickie was again the #1 qualifier at the next IHRA event at Rockingham; an 8.08/171 got him the spot. He ran the first seven-second time at a national event when he won his first round with a 7.99 over Billy Ewing. The race was stopped while photos of the historic time on the scoreboards was photographed, and he was congratulated for the feat. An 8.04 in the second round over a fouling Sam Carroll backed up the 7.99 for a new IHRA record. But in the semifinals, he lost to eventual winner Ronnie Sox's 8.13/168 with an 8.17/170. Smith made it to the finals at the IHRA Dixie Nationals but had to settle for runner-up to Warren Johnson, a position he would again have at the IHRA Springnationals at Bristol on May 18. An 8.19/168.22 qualified second to Johnson's Low ET 8.09. Smith ran a best of 8.14 in the first round to beat Keith Albritten. An 8.19 in round two took out Bob Glidden's 8.37, and a semifinal 8.22 turned back Pat Musi. The two low qualifiers would meet in the final, where Johnson's 8.13/166 beat Rickie's 8.32/164.47. The next stop on the IHRA tour was Milan, Michigan, for the Northern Nationals. Smith's 8.04 in qualifying was the Low ET of the meet, but William Paris's holeshot aided 8.15 in the semifinals stopped his quicker 8.09. He finally got his win on August 3 at Bristol for the IHRA Summernationals. An 8.17/168.47 qualified #2. He got revenge on Paris by beating him with an 8.22 in the second round. In the semifinal, an 8.30/165.44 beat Roy Hill's 8.59/159. In the final, Don Nicholson fouled away a strong 8.20/167, and Smith motored through to an 8.321/164.83 victory. On August 13, he was in Maryland for the Mountain Motor Nationals. He qualified #7 with an off-pace (for him) 8.29. He picked up a tenth in the first round with an 8.19. An even quicker 8.15/170 in the second round lost to Bill Jenkins' 8.24/165. At the IHRA US Open, Smith again reset the speed record, this time to 174.08 during qualifying, which came with an 8.02 that was good for the #2 spot behind Johnson's 7.91. Both Johnson and Smith made it to the semifinals before losing. Rickie's 8.24/169 lost to Mike Kennedy's 8.25/164. The best times reported for the year were 7.95/175.12. We need to confirm where those took place.

Notes: 1990 IHRA World Nationals, Norwalk, OH. No numbers, but was upset in round one, by David Drongowski. | Tim was at Darlington for the IHRA Winternationals where he qualified #5. He was upset by Steve Schmidt in the opening round. Tim set Low ET in qualifying #1 at Bristol for the IHRA Springnationals with a 7.44 at 186.71. But a first-round 7.58 lost to Morris Johnson Jr's 7.56. The next IHRA event was the Gateway Nationals at St. Louis, where he qualified #2 with a 7.40 behind Harold Denton's 7.39. These two would work their way into the final. Nabors opened up with a 7.49 over Carl Fisher and in round two his 7.48 beat Terry Housley. He slowed to 7.52 in the semifinals, but it was enough to beat Terry Walters. Denton had run 7.51 in his semifinal race so the final was sure to be close. It was, as Nabors got the jump on Denton and his 7.49/186.36 held on to win over Denton's quicker 7.48/186. Tim also made it to the final at the next IHRA race as well, the Empire Nationals. He had pulled the holeshot of the day in the semifinals where his 7.36/187.95 beat Rickie Smith's 7.29/189. But in the final against Tommy Mauney, Nabors had his 'chute fall out and deploy just after leaving the line. He then won the IHRA Eastern Nationals at Atco where a 7.38 stopped Doug Kirk in the final.

Notes: First pro stock car in the six-second zone. Happened on September 21, 1991. Denton won the IHRA Springnationals when Steve Williford fouled against him in the final. Harold still ran a 7.33/188.15 to win. He also ran a 7.34/189.09 in the second round when Tim Nabors fouled, and a 7.37/188.17 took care of Rickie Smith in the semifinal. Harold was at Maryland International on August 21 for the Mountain Motor Nationals. His 7.46/171.20 qualified #11, and in the opening round of eliminations, he beat Harold Robinson with a 7.49/189.51. In round two, he lost to a slight holeshot by Terry Walter's that saw his 7.35 lose to Terry's 7.36. Even though he lost, Denton was not done. Jim Yates had also lost in eliminations, and these two came back out for a grudge race. Denton won their private race with a 7.09/195.86. He qualified #1 at the IHRA US Open on September 20 with a 6.98 (Low ET and first Pro Stock six) at 198.18 (Top Speed) and beat Doug Kirk in the final. At the next event, the IHRA Fallnationals, he went from first to last when his 7.26/191.68 qualified on the bump. An improved 7.13/194.69 advanced past the first-round when Jerry Yeoman fouled. Unfortunately, Denton fouled in the second round to let Terry Adams (7.15/193.87) a free ride into the semifinal.

Notes: Joe didn't run a lot of IHRA races in '92, but when he did, he ran well. He became the first non-nitrous, carbureted doorslammer to top 200 mph when he ran 204.26 at Englishtown on March 1. On July 19 he was at New England for the IHRA Northeast Nitrous Nationals. He qualified #12 with a 7.19/191.40. In the first round, a 7.31/191.69 beat a tire shaking Steve Williford at 7.61/200. In the second round Joe slowed to a 7.70/185.18 that lost to Jim Revis' 7.21/194. It wasn't until August 30 before he raced at another IHRA event, the World Nationals at Norwalk. Unfortunately, a best of 7.20/191.00 left him as #2 alternate. Joe then went to the next event, the IHRA North American Nationals on September 13 back at New England. A 7.13/192.55 qualified #15, but a first-round 7.23/192.26 was no match for Doug Kirk's 7.00/200. He then went to Darlington for the IHRA US Open on September 27. Joe ran a stout 7.07/195.86 to qualify #12. An off pace 7.40/186.45 lost to Billy Huff's 7.11/197 in the first round. At the season-ending IHRA Fallnationals at Bristol, he qualified #13 with a 7.13/194.51. Once again he stumbled in the first round, when a 7.62/160.83 lost to eventual winner Jerry Yeoman's 7.09/195.

Notes: Every so often, a driver gets a dream season, a year when everything just seems to go your way. Holbrook had one of those in 1999. He had never won in Pro Stock before this year. The season started at Darlington for the IHRA Winternationals. During qualifying, he reset the IHRA record to 6.61. That, of course, was good for the pole. His speed on the pass was 209.07. The race was then rained out and postponed until May. The next IHRA event was the Amalie Nationals held at Bradenton near the end of March. Holbrook's 6.66 (Low ET) at 208.47 qualified #1. In the opening round, his 6.76/206.13 beat Dwayne Rice. But in round two, a 6.81/205.85 lost to Gene Wilson's 6.79/204. At Rockingham, his 6.72/207.56 qualified second to John Montecalvo's 6.71/207 for the IHRA Springnationals. A 6.76/206.18 in the first round defeated Baker's ailing 9.98/91. He then ran 6.77/205.76 in round two to beat Tom Lee's 6.80/204. He set both Low ET and Top Speed in the semi-final with a 6.68/208.76. Unfortunately, that came with a loss at Floyd Cheek had gotten out on him as his 6.71/207 held on to win. Floyd went on to win the race making it two in a row in the early season. The teams then returned to Darlington to wrap up the Winternationals. Chris made up some ground here as he won the race. He started by beating Chuck DeMory's 6.90/200 in the first round with a 6.74/206.16. Another 6.74 at 205.94 beat Rice's 6.76/205 in round two. Montecalvo fouled away a 6.76/204 against him in the semi-final, and Chris advanced with a 6.72/205.16. Cheek was in his third final of the year, and Holbrook had lane choice over him as Floyd had run 6.73 in his semi-final race. The two had a great race that saw Holbrook's 6.72/206.45 get the victory over Floyd's 6.74/204. The next stop was at Cordova for the IHRA Summernationals. Every race of the season had been all-Ford finals, but at Cordova, the GM camp was fighting back. Chris had the quickest Ford in qualifying as his 6.74/207.08 got him the #3 spot. His 6.84/204.94 took out Ed Machacek's off-pace Firebird in round one. In round two, his 6.85/204.76 lost to Jon Yoak's 6.83/206. Cheek also lost in that round, so he didn't lose points to him. Amazingly enough, despite both these Ford drivers losing in round two, the final came down to another all-Ford final between Lee and Yoak. Holbrook showed his dominance in New York for the IHRA Empire Nationals. He qualified #1 with track records of 6.65/208.55. DeMory fouled against him in round one, and Chris advanced at 6.70/207.30. A second-round 6.75 beat Doug Kirk, and a 6.74/207.43 took care of a fouling Ron Miller in the semi-final. For the first time this season, a GM car reached the final. It was Steve Spiess's Cutlass. He was no slouch as he qualified second and ran 6.75 in his semi-final win. But Holbrook was up to the challenge, running 6.73/207.53 to get his second victory of the season over Steve's 6.77/206. He qualified #1 at the IHRA Northern Nationals with a 6.75 (Low ET) at 205.60. Jeremy Bevins' 6.88/203 lost to his 6.79/206.13 (Top Speed) in the first round. But in round two, the car got out of shape against Rice, and Holbrook crossed the centerline. Another win came at Norwalk at the end of August for the IHRA World Nationals. He "only" qualified #8 at 6.76/205.91. But he picked up the pace once eliminations started. A 6.76/207.37 defeated Gene Wilson's out-of-shape T-Bird. Montecalvo knew enough that he had to try for a good light against him and fouled away a 6.76/206. Chris advanced with a 6.74/206.45. Another 6.74 at 206.45 advanced in the semi-final when Spiess fouled against him. It was another all-Ford final, and he faced relative newcomer Bevins. Both had run 6.74 in the semi-final. It was a great race between the two as Chris' 6.72/207.08 nipped Bevins' 6.73/206. Shortly after that, Holbrook was in New England for the IHRA North American Nationals. His 6.69/207.69 qualified #6. He cut a good light in round one, and his 6.72/208.46 beat Lee's 6.71/208. In the second round, his 6.74/206.95 beat Baker's 6.82/204. In the semi-final, Chris's 6.76/208.20 lost to Ron Miller's 6.71/208. There was no Ford in the IHRA Pro Stock final for the first time this season. Holbrook 'fixed" that at the next race as he won the IHRA Autumn Nationals held at Rockingham. He qualified #1 at 6.67 (Low ET) at 207.23. Machacek fouled against him in the first round, and he ran 6.71/207.75 to win. In round two, he ran 6.72/207.13 over Bob Holzer's 6.79/205. Lee then fouled against him in the semi-final, and a 6.73/207.42 advanced into the final. There he raced Montecalvo's strong Chevy, which had qualified second. Holbrook showed he could drive, as his 6.73/207.70 got the win over John's slightly better 6.72/207. He then went to Maryland International and won the IHRA President's Cup Championships. A 6.646/208.75 qualified #3. He then ran 6.71/207.94 in the opening round to beat Harold Robinson's 6.95/196. Tim Nabors' 6.78/205 fell to his 6.73/208.23 in round two, and another 6.73 at 205.54 dropped low qualifier Lee's 6.74/208 in the semi-final. Once again, he lined up with Cheek in the final. Floyd had problems and shut off while Holbrook streaked to a 6.69/208.55 for the win. Photo: 1999 IHRA Northern Nationals, Stanton, MI. Qualified No. 1 with Low ET of Meet 6.75/205. With three wins on the season that would lead to the points championship, Holbrook, near lane, got out of shape in round one and kicked a cone at the 330-ft mark, giving the win to Dwayne Rice.
