Notes: Sherrill Huff was the owner of Ohio Valley Raceway and his son Billy had been running a car in IHRA's Factory Modified class. Billy had finished as high as second place in the final year of the class. When Sherrill saw a Jerry Haas-built Beretta for sale he picked it up for Billy to drive in Pro Stock. Billy missed the first three events, but showed up with crew chief Tommy Jones sorting out the 742 Tim Nabors built engine. The team did well qualifying #6 at their first event with a 7.26 at Baton Rouge. Billy got a pole and two semifinal finishes before winning his first Pro Stock race at the IHRA World Nationals where he stopped Rickie Smith in the final. At the season-ending IHRA Fallnationals, he qualified #6 with a 7.18/192.64. A first-round 7.09/196.45 beat Carlton Phillips (7.20/193). He won a close race against Doug Kirk in the second round with his 7.11/195.27 prevailing over Kirk's 7.12/194. A semifinal 7.16/194.09 lost to Billy Ewing's 7.15/195. The team ended up in eighth place in the points race running a season best of 7.02/198. Pretty good for his first year in Pro Stock.

Notes: It had been a long time since Mercury was at the top of the heap in drag racing. You would have to go back to the late sixties to see the make so competitive. Back then, the manufacturer was involved; now, all the success came from independent car owners. Gene was driving Charlie Hunt's Cougar and, up until this season, had never won an IHRA race. That all changed as he would win a record-tying eight races. That tied him with Bob Glidden, who had done that in '76. The car was quick, qualifying low at nine consecutive IHRA events and setting both ends of the IHRA record to 6.532/213.37. 2001 IHRA Northern Nationals, Stanton, MI. Qualified No. 1 at 6.61/210.37 but lost to Chris Holbrook's round one holeshot 6.84/202, beating a 6.83/194. 6.779 193.21 MIR Mountain Motor Nationals 8/01 Ron Howard Gene Wilson launches his Mountain Motored Pro Stocker at the 2001 IHRA North American Nationals, New England Dragway, Epping, NH. Notes: Craig was at Darlington in March for the IHRA Winternationals. He qualified #6 with a career-best (to this point) 6.91/201.56. The run got him into Sonny's 200 mph club. In the first round, he ran 6.93/201.88 to beat Jerry Yeoman. In the second round, his 7.02/199.29 lost to Billy Huff's 6.89/203. He continued to run well at IHRA's second event of the season, the Dixie Nationals at the 1/8 mile Carolina Dragway. A 4.47/160.14 qualified #2 and set a new IHRA 1/8 mile record as Floyd Cheek qualified #1 with a 4.47 but failed to back it up for the record. But an off-pace 4.76/153.37 in the first round, lost to David Jenkins' 4.63/155. He then ran at Tulsa's independent Springnationals, where he qualified #2 in the eight-car field with a 6.87/201. He lost to Huff's 6.85/201 in the first round, with a 6.90/201. He had another great qualifying effort at Bristol for the IHRA Springnationals, where his 7.02/197.97 qualified #2. He beat Steve Williford in round one, with a 7.08/197.45, while in round two, a 7.10/196.67 beat Doug Kirk's close 7.12/197. In the semifinals, he beat Canadian John Konigshofer's off-pace 7.48/188 with a 7.11/196.37, putting him in the final against Robert Patrick. It was a good close final, but Robert's 7.10/194 beat Craig's 7.11/196.97. He finished runner-up at the next IHRA event as well, the Supernationals at Alabama International. Craig qualified #2 for the third IHRA race in a row with a 6.95/200.66, and he advanced past a tire-shaking Harold Denton in the first round with a 7.02/199.11. In round two, tire shake also took out Floyd Cheek, and Craig moved on with a 7.20/196.97. In the semifinals, he outran Tim Nabors' 7.15/188 with a 7.06/198.36, setting up a final-round meeting with Roy Hill. There was no stopping Hill this day, as in the final, he ran 6.94/200 for the victory over Hankinson's 7.08/199.11. Craig was at the Nebraska Motorplex in mid-August for the IHRA Mid-America Nationals. Unfortunately, he ended up as the first alternate with a 7.09/198.80 best. He then went to Norwalk for the IHRA World Nationals. A 7.04/198.50 qualified #13. He fouled away a 7.14/195.80 in the first round against Mike Bell, who advanced with a 7.05/196.

Notes: Hill showed the world that he had the quickest Pro Stock car in the world when he showed up at Darlington in March for the IHRA Winternationals. Roy qualified #1 with a 7.233 (Low ET and new track record) at 191.48. He then ran 7.33/190 over Bob Olson and 7.32/189 to beat a tire-shaking Charlie Peppers. He fouled against Billy Ewing in the semifinal with a 7.31/192.30 (Top Speed). It was unfortunate, as Ewing advanced with a 7.44/186. At the second IHRA race of the year, the Bayou Nationals, he finished runner-up to Bob Glidden in an all-Ford final. At the IHRA Pro-Am, Roy qualified #2 with a 7.35/189.87 behind Bruce Allen's 7.34 in the Reher and Morrison car. In round one, Harold Robinson fouled against him, and a holeshot 7.55/187.11 beat Terry Adams' quicker 7.45/187 in round two, but he fouled against Rickie Smith again in the semis. He won MIR's Spring Mountain Motor Championships, stopping Smith in the final. He also set Low ET and Top Speed at 7.42/187. On June 1, he was at Bristol for the IHRA Springnationals. A 7.49/188.20 qualified #3, but he fouled away a 7.57/184.42 against Olson in Gary Stewart's Firebird in the first round. At the IHRA Gateway Nationals, he qualified #6 with a 7.50/186.33. He made his way to the final by beating Jerry Yeoman, a breaking Allen, and by holeshotting Darrell Alderman with a 7.55/186 that beat Darrell's 7.49/191. In the final, he fouled again, only this time against Glidden. He needed to try as Glidden ran 7.39 compared to his 7.59. The next IHRA event was the Northern Nationals held at Milan Dragway on July 6. Hill's 7.45/193.54 qualified #6. His 7.50/189.87 advanced over a fouling Olson in the first round. Unfortunately, in round two, Hill fouled against Alderman. A 7.48/187.11 qualified Roy second at The IHRA Summernationals behind Glidden's 7.37/189. In the first round, he beat Ronny Smith, but his 7.57 lost to a holeshot aided 7.62 by Billy Ewing in round two. Thompson Dragway held their Independence Eve Championships, and Roy was there. He set Low ET and Top Speed in the first round, while beating Alderman with a 7.65/191.48. In the semifinals, he fouled against Joe Lepone. The PHR Championships were held under IHRA rules. Hill qualified #12 with a 7.79/186.33, and in round one, his 7.60/180.36 advanced over a fouling Olson. His Topaz got out of shape in the second round, and his 7.67/187.50 lost to Smith's 7.48/183 Mustang. Hill won the next IHRA race, the World Nationals. He qualified #3 and ran a 7.47 in the first round, over Al Waters. In round two, a 7.45 stopped Jim Ruth's "Party Time" Firebird, and he made an easy pass in the semifinals when Alderman's Camaro broke. In the final, he got the victory with a holeshot over Smith. His 7.47/186.17 beat Smith's 7.43/185. He was in another IHRA final on September 7 at Rockingham for the US Open Championships. He qualified #6 and had made his way to the final by beating Walters, a tire-shaking Allen, and Alderman in the semifinals. In the final, he lost to Smith. The next day (September 8), Hill won the MIR Mountain Motor Nationals. He qualified #1 with a 7.40 and then ran a 7.34 (track record) at 189 to beat Mike Bazell. A 7.44/188 in round two took out Charlie Garrett's 7.69/179 and a 7.35/188 in the semis beat Bob Harris' Firebird. In the final, he was up against Carlton Phillips, driving Al Waters' Firebird. As stated, Roy won the race with a final round of 7.37/189 over Carlton's 7.51/183. At Piedmont, a 4.76/152.10 one-eighth mile track record was set. Bristol held the Hurst-sponsored Pro Stock shootout the day before (September 20) the IHRA Fallnationals. Roy fouled in the first round, against Ruth. The next day at the IHRA Fallnationals, he beat Alderman in the opening round before losing to eventual winner Glidden's 7.35 in round two with a 7.54. Notes: The Fords were tough at Bradenton for the IHRA Winternationals. It didn't matter if it was a Probe of a T-Bird, as they took the first five spots in qualifying. Konigshofer's 6.73/205.62 got him the third spot in the field. In the opening round, his 6.83/204.49 defeated Daniel Seamon's 6.85/199. In the second round, he beat another Ford driver, Carl Baker, with a 6.85/203.57. In the semi-final, he fell off to 6.94/201.20 and lost to eventual winner Tom Lee's 6.80/204. He tried the same thing in round two, but he fouled away a 6.78/205.32 against Tim Nabors, who advanced with a 6.85/202.IHRA's next event was the Summernationals held at Cordova. A 6.93/200.35 qualified on the "bump" for the sixteen car field. He didn't stick around long in eliminations as low qualifier Floyd Cheek beat his off-pace 7.32/152.40 with a 6.89/201. In mid-July, he was in New York for the IHRA Empire Nationals. Unfortunately, his 6.91/201.91 best failed to qualify(second alternate).1998 IHRA Northern Nationals, Stanton, MI. Qualified 15th at 6.80/204.20. In round one, his 6.86/203.55 lost to Seamon's 6.76/204. Shortly after that (August 30), he was at Norwalk for the IHRA World Nationals. Once again, he sat on the "bump" with a 6.82/204.59. He fouled away another 6.82 at 204.73 in the first round against low qualifier Ron Miller who ran 6.80/204. He really picked up at New England in September for the IHRA North American Nationals. His 6.72/207.05 qualified #6. In round one, John's 6.76/206.16 beat Larry O'Brien's 6.75/207. Lee had problems against him in round two and shut down while Konigshofer ran 7.38/130.59 to advance. He ran Stuart Evans in the semi-final, and John got out of shape and shut down to 11.18/73.96 in a loss to eventual winner Evans' 6.72/207. The next race on the IHRA schedule was the President's Cup Championships at Maryland International. John was the first alternate there at 6.75/205.13.

Notes: Doug started the 1995 season by winning the IHRA Winternationals at Darlington. He set a new IHRA ET record of 6.77 in qualifying on the pole and his speed of 205 on the run was a new track record. After an easy first-round, he beat a fouling Charlie Peppers in round two with a 6.82/203.61. A 6.80/204.49 beat Robert Patrick in the semifinals and in the final he met up with Harold Denton's Firebird. Denton broke and Doug's 6.78/204.45 took the victory. He ran well at the IHRA Supernationals at Alabama International. In the second round his 6.82/204.22 beat Carlton Phillips, but in the semifinals, both he and Jon Yoak ran 6.82's with Jon getting the win light. Kirk won the third IHRA race of the season, the President's Cup Championships at Maryland International. He qualified #1 with a 6.80 (Low ET). Then he stayed in the low 6.8's to win. A second round 6.84/203.57 beat Billy Huff while a 6.83/203.43 advanced into the final when Floyd Cheek broke. A final round 6.85/202.83 beat Williford for the victory.

Notes: Frank was in Milan for the IHRA Northern Nationals on July 6. It surprised a lot of people when he showed, as he had not competed at an IHRA event for quite some time. He made a timed run of 7.43/191.08 before qualifying #7 with a 7.47/191.80. He then went 7.46/191.48 in the second round to beat Bruce Allen, who had his Camaro break at half-track. In the semifinals, he still hit 191.80 while losing to Darrell Alderman in Jerry Haas' Camaro. Listed speed from The Drag Racing List, December 86/January 87, Volume 1, Number 9.

Notes: After running a T-Bird for the last few seasons, Smith switched to a Mustang for '86. He did rather well with it, winning the IHRA Pro Stock title. He started the season at Darlington for IHRA's season-opening Winternationals. A 7.32/189.87 qualified #2 behind Roy Hill. Rickie ran another 7.32 at 188.67 in the first round to beat Terry Adams out of shape T-Bird. He advanced into the semifinal with a 7.36/189 when Jerry Yeoman's Camaro broke in round two. But the semis was as far as Smith would get as his 7.40/188 lost to Darrell Alderman's 7.28/191 in Jerry Haas' Camaro. He did better at Rockingham for the IHRA Pro-Am Championships in May. He qualified #3 with a 7.38/189.47 and another 7.38 at 190, beating Al Waters in the first round. In the second round, both he and Bob Harris ran 7.45 (Rickie at Top Speed of the meet 192.30), with the Mustang getting the win light. A 7.40/187.50 advanced to the final over a fouling Roy Hill. He faced Bruce Allen in the Reher and Morrison Camaro in the final. The two had a great race, but Allen's 7.37/187 beat Smith's 7.39/185. He was runner-up to Hill at the MIR Spring Mountain Motor Championships. The next IHRA event was the Springnationals at Bristol. Rickie qualified #4 and ran steady 7.5s to reach the semifinals, where he faced Allen. Once again, Bruce got the better of him, and his 7.53 lost to the Camaro's 7.46. A 7.48 qualified #5 at St. Louis for the IHRA Gateway Nationals. Again, he made his way to the semifinals by beating Terry Walters and Barry Shirley. In the semis, he lost to a strong running Bob Glidden, who went on to win. At the IHRA Northern Nationals, he made a timed run of 193.13 (career-best to this point). He then qualified #5 with a 7.44/189.47 and then beat Charlie Peppers with another 7.44 at 191.08 in round one, while a 7.45/192.30 beat Jim Ruth's "Party Time" Firebird in round two. But in the semifinals, he lost to Glidden, who again went on to win. Rickie made it into the final at the IHRA Summernationals. He qualified #3 and beat Shirley, Ruth, and a fouling Billy Ewing in the semifinals with a 7.52. But in the final, he faced that T-Bird from Whiteland and his 7.52/185.95 finished second best to Glidden's 7.38/189. Smith was overdue for a win, and he got one. Thompson Dragway held its Independence Eve Championships, and Rickie won. Traction wasn't the best as Low ET was a 7.65 he Hill's Topaz, but Smith ran 7.84/184 over Harold Denton driving Ruth's Firebird in the first round, and a 7.75/188.67 beat Mark Pawuk in the semifinals. In the final, he ran Joe Lepone. Joe fouled away a 7.82/178, and Smith went on to the victory with a 7.69/188.67. That seemed to help as he then went to Martin, Michigan's US 131, for the PHR Championships and won that, too. A 7.50 qualified #4, but he improved to a track record 7.42 in the first round to beat Harry Scribner's Cougar. He beat Hill's out-of-shape in the second round, Topaz, with a 7.48/183.25. Alderman fouled against him in the semifinals, and the final shaped up to be the Mustang against Ewing's Camaro. Rickie slowed to a 7.58/184.42 in the final, but it was enough to beat Billy's 7.64/180. He made yet another final-round appearance at Norwalk for the IHRA World Nationals. Rickie qualified #4 and then ran 7.52 in the first round over Dean Goforth, and in round two, he beat Ed Dixon. In the semifinals, he picked up to 7.47 to beat Tim Nabors. In the all-Ford final, he was up against Hill. Roy pulled a huge holeshot and held on to win with a 7.47/186, beating Smith's 7.43/185.90. The same two met in the final at the next IHRA race, the US Open at Rockingham. Rickie had gotten into the final by beating Buddy Ingersoll's turbocharged Buick with a 7.38; he then beat Nabors' Camaro and Adams' T-Bird to meet with Hill again. The roles were reversed this time, with Smith scoring the win over Roy's Topaz. In September, he was at Bristol for the Hurst Pro Stock Shootout. The eight cars that qualified the best during the year made up the field. He beat Nabors in the first round with a 7.46/189.47, but he was surprised in the semifinals when Ruth picked up to a 7.41/190 to beat him. The next day (September 21), IHRA held their season final, the Fallnationals. A 7.40/188 qualified Rickie #3 in the show. He ran well, stopping Dixon in round two with a 7.49/187. But in the semifinals, all hell broke loose when Rickie ran 7.46/188 and lost to Ingersoll's 7.33/192. This performance from a turbocharged V6 against the over 700 cubic inch monster motored cars was unacceptable. The IHRA Pro Stock drivers wanted the Buick out. Ingersoll lost to Glidden in the final to save face for the big-engined cars. That was the end of turbocharged cars in IHRA Pro Stock. They were outlawed after this race. 1985 and 1986 IHRA Pro Stock World Champion.

Notes: Swept Bristol IHRA races in 1984: Springs with a 7.566 at 183.29 and Falls with a 7.556 at 186.33. Ran 7.565/183.67 at IHRA Cincinnati. Note: the hood scoops were later outlawed. | The Texas Trio was out in force to win the IHRA and the NHRA Championships in '84. The IHRA season started in March at Darlington for the Winternationals. The team had changed some things from the '83 season. The car was now using a lower first gear. The rear end was switched from 5.29 to 4.88 and a heavier clutch was used. A larger rear spoiler was also used. On Lee's first qualifying attempt, a sidewall split on a rear slick and he logged an 11-second time. But after that, he ran 7.52, 7.50, 7.49, and 7.48/186.72 (Top Speed). Any one of those runs was good enough for the pole. In the opening round, Shepherd’s 7.54/183 advanced when Don Campanello fouled. Sam Carroll fouled against him in round two and Lee moved forward with a 7.49/185. He set Low ET in the semifinals with a 7.47/185 over Roy Hill who also fouled. He faced #2 qualifier, Darrell Alderman, in Gary Duckworth's Camaro in the final. Lee got the victory with a 7.49/184.42 while Alderman shut down early. Both Lee's 7.47 and 186.72 marks were new IHRA records. The team also won the IHRA Pro-Am Championships at Rockingham. Lee qualified #1, set Low ET at 7.48, and beat Rickie Smith in the final. The next IHRA event was the Springnationals held at Bristol. A 7.57 (Low ET) at 181.45 qualified #1. A first-round 7.59/183.67 beat Smith and he downed another Ford in round two, the T-Bird of Bob Glidden. Lee’s 7.60/184.80 stopped Glidden's 7.64/183. In the semifinals, his 7.61/182.92 beat Joe Lepone's 7.68/180 in the "Palmer Bros." Firebird. His final round victim at this race was Billy Ewing, driving the former Johnny Dowey Camaro. Shepherd took the win with a 7.70/183.29 over Ewing's 7.75/177. Milan was tough on the other Pro Stock racers. Nobody else in IHRA Pro Stock racing had yet to run a 7.4 and the Reher-Morrison team had a habit of making it look easy. They showed up at Milan with a 640 cubic inch engine combination. At the Northern Nationals, Lee reset the IHRA record to 7.45 in qualifying #1. His speed on the run was 187.11. He then ran 7.47/186, 7.56/184 (over Warren Johnson), and 7.51/184 to reach the final. He faced Smith again and the results were the same, Shepherd’s 7.52/185.95 scored the win over Rickie's 7.58/182. The next stop on the IHRA tour was at Edgewater for the IHRA Summernationals. Shepherd took his 12th consecutive pole with a 7.58/181.81. He then improved to a 7.51 for Low ET and in the semifinals, his 7.56/183.67 beat Hill. For the third time in '84 the final came down to Smith vs. Shepherd. For the first time in '84, Rickie was able to turn the tables and win. He put a holeshot on Lee that saw his 7.63/183 beat Shepherd's 7.56/184.42 (Top Speed). Of course, Lee qualified #1 at Norwalk for the IHRA World Nationals. The track record going into this race was 7.67 and Lee ran 7.48/184.80 for the pole. A 7.49 beat Alderman in the opening round and he then beat Lepone and Smith to reach the final against Hill. Roy fouled and Shepherd claimed another IHRA title with a 7.51/184.04.

Notes: IHRA held eleven races in 1999. Ten of them were won by drivers racing Ford Probes. Montecalvo was the strongest GM campaigner, and he was able to give the Ford drivers a run for their money. The season started at Darlington in March for the IHRA Winternationals. The race was postponed until May after qualifying due to rain. Four Monte Carlos had qualified, and he was the second quickest of the breed at 6.66/207.91. That was good enough for #5 overall. The next race was the IHRA Amalie Nationals held at Bradenton at the end of March. He was not running as well as he usually did as his 6.78/204.87 "only" qualified #12. In the opening round, his 6.80/202.47 fell to eventual winner Floyd Cheek's 6.77/205. Things went much better at Rockingham for the IHRA Springnationals, where his 6.71/207.08 qualified #1. In the first round, his 6.77/204.54 defeated Bob Holzer's 6.89/201. Another 6.77 at 204.49 in round two stopped Doug Kirk's 6.82/202. But he got out of shape in the semi-finals and shut down to 7.70/131.61 in a loss to Jon Yoak's 6.78/207. The IHRA teams all returned to Darlington shortly after that to finish running the Winternationals. In the first round, Montecalvo faced fellow Monte Carlo driver Tim Nabors and John's 6.73/205.82 beat Nabors' 6.82/203. He beat yet another Monte Carlo driver in the second round as his 6.76/205.94 trailered Steve Spiess's better 6.76/205. He faced low qualifier and eventual winner in the semi-final, and John fouled away a 6.76/204 while Holbrook advanced with a 6.72/205. IHRA's next event was the Summernationals held at Cordova. Montecalvo set Low ET during qualifying at 6.73/205.63. But only one GM car survived the first round of eliminations, and it wasn't his. John was upset when he was late off the line, and his 6.81/204.08 lost to Jeremy Bevins' 6.88/204. The GM guys needed to do something as every IHRA event had seen all-Ford battles in the finals. John qualified well in New York, where his 6.68/207.27 was #3 for the IHRA Empire Nationals. But an off-pace 6.85/173.67 in the first round lost to Bevins' 6.79/206. At the IHRA Northern Nationals, his 6.77/203.86 qualified second to Chris Holbrook's 6.75/205. In round one, his 6.78/205.26 beat Kirk's 6.85/203. In round two, he had problems and shut down to 10.81/81.30 in a loss to eventual winner Floyd Cheek's 6.85/203. He did not go to Norwalk for the IHRA World Nationals but was on the schedule at New England for the IHRA North American Nationals. He set a new track record 6.642 (at 209.04) in qualifying low for the field. Only thirteen cars had shown, so he got the "odd-lot" solo in round one and ran 6.66/209.33. The car stayed in the 6.6's in round two as well, where his 6.69/208.84 defeated Cheek's 6.75/206. He then ran 6.66/208.94 in the semi-final to drop Bevins' 6.74/207. No one else had run in the 6.6's during eliminations. John went into the final against Ron Miller to make it an all-Chevy final. Montecarlo ran 6.69/208.52 to give the GM team its first win of the season (and only one of the year) over Miller's close 6.70/208. The momentum continued at Rockingham for the IHRA Autumn Nationals. He qualified #2 with a 6.69/208.09, right behind Holbrook's 6.67/207. These two would fight their way into the final. John started by running 6.70/207.46 over a tire-shaking Kirk. Gene Wilson's T-Bird had problems in round two, and John went 6.72/207.42 to advance. In the semi-final, he slowed to 6.77/206.65, but it was still enough to beat Dwayne Rice's 6.83/205. The two finalists were closely matched in performance, but Holbrook had lane choice due to his 6.73 in the semi-final. That may have made the difference as Chris ran 6.73/207 for the victory over John's slightly better 6.72/207.46. Photo from the 1999 IHRA Northern Nationals, Stanton, MI. Qualified second at 6.77/203. After qualifying as No. 1 last year and losing to Doug Kirk in the opening round, he met Kirk again in round one but won this time with a 6.78/205. He got out of shape and shut off to Floyd Cheek in round two. Notes: 1990 IHRA World Champion. Tommy Mauney started his season at Darlington for the IHRA Winternationals. He qualified #3 and in round one, he advanced with a 7.33. In round two, he ran 7.34/190.64 to beat Frank Sanchez and, in the semifinals, he took out Billy Ewing. A final round 7.33/191.00 got him the victory over Rickie Smith. He doubled up by winning IHRA's second event of the season, the Springnationals at Bristol. There were 29 cars attempting to qualify for the sixteen-car field and Mauney qualified #2. He beat Terry Walters in the opening round and in round two, he set Top Speed with a 7.48/195.47 to beat Mark Pawuk. Ed Dixon fouled against him in the semifinals and Tommy advanced with a 7.51/187.15. He faced Doug Kirk in the final and a 7.52/187.88 wrapped up his second IHRA victory. The third IHRA event of the season was the Gateway Nationals at St. Louis. Mauney qualified #4 with a 7.43 and after beating Lewis Worden in round one, he lost to Ewing. But that little hiccup didn't slow him down for long as he then won the IHRA Empire Nationals. A final round 7.34/187.93 beat Smith who had his 'chute deploy early in the run. After winning three of the first four races of the season, it seemed he would go on to win quite a few more, but it didn't turn out that way. He failed to reach the finals at Atco's IHRA Eastern Nationals and at Norwalk for the IHRA World Nationals. He did qualify low at Darlington for the IHRA US Open. After an easy first-round win, he beat Jim Yates in round two with a 7.39/185.64. But he lost to Carlton Phillips in the semifinal. At the IHRA Fallnationals at Bristol, there was a race within a race as the lowest eight qualifiers at the IHRA events over the year would race in the Summit Shootout. Mauney was one of the eight, but in the Shootout, he had a close first-round race where both he and Kirk ran 7.43, but Doug got the win light. The next day for the Fallnationals race, Tommy made it into the semifinals before losing.

Notes: Tim failed to qualify at the IHRA Winternationals, but at the second IHRA event of the season, the IHRA Nitrous Nationals on May 3 at the 1/8 mile Huntsville Dragway, he qualified #8 with a 4.59/160.91 (Top Speed). A 4.62/153.87 in the first round, beat Harold Denton's close 4.64/154, but in round two tire shake forced him to shut down to a 5.91/83.83 loss to Bob Simmons. He lost to low qualifier Denton in the first round, at the IHRA Cornplex Nitrous on May 17. The IHRA Springnationals at Bristol saw another non-qualifier. He ran at Epping on July 19 for the IHRA Northeast Nationals where a 7.18/195.77 qualified #11. A quicker-leaving Todd Tutterow beat him in the first round, with a 7.19/192 to Nabors' quicker 7.17/194.30. In August he was at the Nebraska Motorplex for the IHRA Mid America Nationals. He qualified #12 with a 7.16/194.13, but lost to Carlton Phillips in the first round, with an ailing 9.08/102.83. A best of 7.21/195.43 kept him out of the field on August 30 for the IHRA World Nationals at Norwalk. The time was only good for #5 alternate. Back at Darlington for the IHRA US Open on September 27, it took a 7.08 just to make the field and Tim's 7.07/202.61 qualified #13. He had the only Pro Stock that topped 200 mph and a first-round 7.29/203.16 (Top Speed) lost to Robert Patrick's 7.08/197. At the season ending IHRA Fallnationals, he again made the field with a 7.12/195.01, qualifying #11. He eased it through with an 8.46/116.56 in the first round, when Morris Johnson Jr. fouled, but Patrick's 7.09/195 beat his 7.18/193.71 in the second round.

Notes: In March, for the IHRA Winternationals, Smith qualified #8 with a 7.63/182; he made it to round two before losing to Billy Ewing. He set a 189.96 IHRA speed record at the Pro-Am Nationals at Rockingham. He also qualified #1 with a career-best 7.45/188 before falling victim to tire shake in round two and shutting down against eventual winner Ronnie Sox. At the IHRA Springnationals, his clutch went, and he lost in the semifinal. In Aug, at MIR for the Mountain Motor Nationals, Rickie qualified #3 with a 7.68/184, but he fouled in round two. At the IHRA US Open, Smith topped Darrell Alderman in the final for a big win. In September, at the IHRA Fallnationals, Rickie qualified #2 with a 7.48/185.15. He went on to run a best of 7.47/186.72 in eliminations. In the final, against Bob Glidden, his clutch gave out, and he had to settle for runner-up. He ended the season as the 1985 IHRA Pro Stock champion. Michael Beach photo from Milan, MI 85.

Notes: AKA Juana Taxi. Four door long wheelbase car had 100 lb. Advantage. What's the story on the 162 mph charge? Was this a 1975 match race time or did it occur later?
