Notes: Lee started the season off by winning the IHRA Winternationals at Bradenton. His 6.72/205.15 qualified second behind Chris Holbrook's 6.69/206. A first-round 6.84/203.66 defeated Larry O'Brien's similar 6.84/203 in a close race. In round two, he beat John Montecalvo with a 6.81/204.31. A consistent 6.80/204.45 in the semifinal beat John Konigshofer's 6.94/201. He faced the #16 qualifier in the final, Jerry Yeoman. But Yeoman had mirrored Lee's times in eliminations, so it was expected to be a close final. But Jerry had problems with his Cutlass and slowed to 7.26/146 while Tom ran 6.79/204.73 for the victory. At Darlington, in May, for the IHRA Southern Nationals, Lee didn't qualify so well. His 6.78/204.20 got him the #14 spot in the show. But in round one, he caught a good light, and his 6.83/204.57 beat David Jenkins' better 6.79/204. Ron Miller had to shut down in round two, and Tom's 6.87/203.46 advanced. His ride ended in the semifinal, where his 6.89/205.16 lost to Tim Nabors' 6.80/203. The IHRA Summernationals at Cordova was a nightmare as Lee could not get in a good run, and his 9.80-85.15 best failed to qualify. The next IHRA event was the Empire Nationals. Tom's 6.88/201.22 qualified #12. He went out early here as his 7.05/198.26 lost to Pete Berner's 6.97/197 in the opening round. Shortly after that (July 22), he was at Maryland International for the Mountain Motor Nationals. It was an eight-car field, and his 6.82/203.34 qualified #3. He showed his driving ability in the opening round, where his 6.90/202.73 beat Harold Denton's quicker 6.82/204. But he fouled in the semifinal against eventual winner Tony Gillig. The following week (August 2), he competed at the IHRA Northern Nationals. Unfortunately, a best of 6.82/204.32 (third alternate) failed to qualify for the show that had a 6.81 "bump." It was then off to Norwalk for the IHRA World Nationals; again, he could not qualify with a 6.82/203.75 (third alternate)best. Things went better at Epping in September for the IHRA North American Nationals. There a 6.75/206.29 qualified #14. In the first round, he repeated the 6.75 at 205.94 to defeat Gillig's 6.74/206. But a problemed, shut off 14.91/59.84 in round two lost to Konigshofer's 7.38/130. It was a long wait, but he was back in the winner's circle on September 27 when he won the IHRA President's Cup Championships at Maryland International. He qualified #8 with a 6.71/206.13. In the opening round, his 6.79/204.45 beat O'Brien's 6.85/204. In round two, he had a close race that saw his 6.87/202.70 beat Dwayne Rice's 6.89/202. Montecalvo fouled against him in the semifinal, and Lee's 6.80/204.70 advanced. He faced the similar Probe of Daniel Seamon in the final, and Seamon had been running quicker throughout qualifying and eliminations. But Lee pulled one out of the hat, running 6.76/204.85 for the victory over Daniel's 6.79/204 runner-up effort. Westu Racing. Notes: Yoak was at Bristol for the IHRA Springnationals. He was having a rough time of it in qualifying as he was sitting in the 30th position for the sixteen-car field with one round of qualifying left. His last-ditch effort of 7.06 qualified #14, but he fouled against Robert Patrick in the first round after all that work just to qualify. |

Notes: Photo from 1996 IHRA Summernationals Morocco, IN, US 41 Dragway. Stevens was at Tulsa for the IHRA Grand American Nationals. In the opening round of eliminations, Larry Nance fouled against him. In round two, his 6.91 lost to eventual winner Robert Patrick's 6.86. He won the IHRA Springnationals at Bristol when his final-round opponent, Jerry Yeoman, fouled. Richie saw the foul and ran 7.28/159.97 for his first IHRA Pro Stock victory. After that win, it was surprising that he failed to qualify at New York International for the IHRA Empire Nationals. Coming into that race, he was fifth in the IHRA points race. He qualified for the IHRA Summernationals but fouled against Craig Hankinson in round two. Things didn't go so well at the Nebraska Motorplex for the IHRA Mid-America Nationals, either. An opening round 6.99 lost to Angelo Aleschi's 6.92. |

Notes: Won IHRA Fall Nationals at Bristol with a 7.623 at 180.36. | This was the team to beat in '83 regardless of running NHRA or the big-inch IHRA motors. They had tested the waters in IHRA the year before at Bristol for the Springnationals. To say that they did well was an understatement. Shepherd qualified #1, set Low ET and Top Speed and won the race. So, they came back in '83 to go for the championship. At the season opening Winternationals at Darlington, Lee qualified #1 with a 7.71/178.92. He set Low ET and a track record in the first round, with a 7.68 over a fouling Chuck Sneed. In round two, a 7.70/180.36 beat Harold Denton while a semifinal 7.72/181.08 (Top Speed) beat Mickey Stephens and moved Shepherd into the final against Warren Johnson. It was a close race, but the Camaro's 7.69/181 got the victory over WJ's Cutlass at 7.72/180. The Reher-Morrison team really opened some eyes at Rockingham for the IHRA Pro-Am Championships. Lee qualified #1 with an unheard-of 7.53/183.29 (good for Low ET and Top Speed as well as track records). He advanced to the final where he met second qualifier, Rickie Smith. Smith got the jump and his 7.70 beat Lee's 7.72 for the win. Shepherd made a rare mistake at the IHRA World Nationals at Norwalk Raceway. He had beaten Johnson in the semifinals and forgot to weigh in after the run. He was disqualified for his oversight and Warren was reinstated. It was the only IHRA final round in '83 that would not have Shepherd in it. He still managed to set Low ET at 7.67. At Bristol for the IHRA Springnationals, Lee again qualified #1 with a 7.70 (Low ET) at 178. He made his way to the final, stopping Johnson in the semifinals with a 7.75/177.86. Once again, he faced Smith's T-Bird in the final, and once again, Rickie finished first. A quick-leaving 7.82/177 held off Lee's runner-up 7.72/176. He picked up another win at Milan Dragway in July for the IHRA Northern Nationals. There, he set Low ET at 7.60 and stopped Bob Glidden in the final. On September 11, the team was at Rockingham for the IHRA US Open. Lee's 7.61 (Low ET) at 181.81 qualified #1 and once again, he ran Smith in another Ford vs. Chevy final. Rickie seemed to have Lee's number as he beat Shepherd for the win. |

Notes: Edwards started his season by winning the IHRA Winternationals at Darlington. He set Low ET and Top Speed in qualifying low with an 8.16/166.97. In the semi-final, he stopped John Brumley with an 8.29. He faced Pat Musi in the final, and Pat fouled. Lee saw the red light and eased to 27.35/24.98 for the victory. He qualified #3 at Rockingham for the IHRA Pro-Am Championships with an 8.14. In the semi-final, his 8.31 defeated Brumley's 8.44. He faced the Mopar of Bobby Yowell in the final, and the Camaro broke. Another runner-up finish came at Bristol for the IHRA Springnationals. He set Low ET and Top Speed in qualifying at 8.21/167.28. Once again, he beat Brumley in the semi-final. Lee went up against Warren Johnson in the final, and the two had a great race that saw WJ's 8.24/163 win over his 8.30/165.74. Yowell made a single for the race win. Lee set Low ET and Top Speed while qualifying #1 at Milan, Michigan, for the IHRA Northern Nationals with an 8.14/171.42. Unfortunately, he lost to Yowell in the opening round when some fluid got under the tires, and he got sideways and shut off. Yowell was later bounced in the semi-final when it was found that he was using nitrous. He went to Maryland International in August for the Mountain Motor Nationals. He won the event by running 8.10 in the final over Ronnie Sox's 8.13. Shortly after that (August 19), he won the IHRA U.S. Open Championships. There, he stopped Brumley in the final. Lee was the IHRA world champion in 1977 and 1978. Also ran comp number 171. Number 1 in IHRA. |

Notes: Herb was at Lakeland in October for a best-of-three match against Paul Blevins. Herb won the first race with a 9.10 over Paul's slightly quicker 9.09. But the Vega was able to win the next two races and the match with times of 9.05 and 9.01 over McCandless's 9.15 and 9.08. Herb's best speed was 149. McCandless also won over an eight-car field at Atco in November. It seems he had quite the advantage there as the car was running about 300 lbs light. Everyone else seemed to be running legal weight, and while Herb was running 8.5s, only one other car dipped into the eights. In the first round, Herb's 8.57/158.17 easily dumped John Healey's 9.19/148. He improved to 8.53/158.73 in the semi-final to drop Frank Russo's off-pace 10.26. He faced Richie Zul's big-block Camaro in the final. Zul had been the only other car in the eights, and he ran 8.98/15 final, but that was still almost a half-second behind McCandless' winning 8.55/158.45. |

Notes: Doug set Low ET in qualifying #1 for the IHRA Winternationals with a 6.85 at 203. The 6.85 reset the IHRA ET record. In the opening round of eliminations, his 6.91/201.92 beat David Jenkins' 7.11/195. But in round two, his 6.96/200.93 lost to Robert Patrick's 6.92/201. In mid-April, he was at Carolina Dragway for the IHRA Dixie Nationals. Kirk qualified #9 with a 4.57/159.03. He didn't hang around in eliminations for long, as Billy Huff's 4.75/155 in the opening round defeated his 4.96/156.38. Bristol was his next stop for the IHRA Springnationals. There he ran 7.05/198.85 to qualify #7. He and arch-rival Huff duked it out in round one, where Kirk's 7.08/197.67 sent Huff's 7.18/196 packing for home. In round two, Kirk's 7.12/197.02 lost to Craig Hankinson's 7.10/196. IHRA's next event was the IHRA Supernationals held at Alabama International on June 19. Doug ran 6.97/199.64 to qualify #4. A first-round 7.02/198.28 took out Mark Thomas' 7.20/197, but in round two, his late 7.03/198.67 lost to Charlie Garrett's 7.07/192. He got his first and only IHRA victory of the year at the IHRA Empire Nationals held at New York International. There he had run 6.99/201.83 to qualify #2 behind Floyd Cheek's 6.98. He improved to 6.97/200.75 in round one, to stop Steve Williford's 7.11/196. In round two, he stayed consistent with a 7.00/200.57 to beat John Nobile's 7.07/199. Patrick fouled against him in the semifinals, so Kirk eased it through with a 7.92/163.30 to advance. He faced Cheek in the final, and Floyd had the advantage; he had run 6.97, 6.94, and 6.93 to reach the final. But Doug picked it up in the final and ran 6.91/203.11 for the victory over Cheek's 6.96/201. |

Notes: Rickie qualified second with a 7.63/182.92 at the IHRA Pro-Am Championships. He went on to win, beating Lee Shepherd in the final. Another win came at the IHRA World Nationals, this time dropping Warren Johnson in the final. A 7.80/177 qualified Rickie second at the IHRA Springnats, and he went on to win over Shepherd in the final. The winning continued with a victory at the MIR Mountain Motor Nats over Johnny Downey. At the IHRA Fallnationals, Smith qualified fourth with a 7.70/181.08, but he lost to a Warren Johnson holeshot 7.70 in the semifinals that beat Rickie's 7.65. Another win over Shepherd came on September 11 at the IHRA US Open. Rickie qualified #4 with a 7.73/180.72. He had a burndown with Johnson in the semifinals that saw Smith advance when Johnson had problems on his run and slowed. Rickie was sharp on the tree in the final, and his 7.73/181.45 held off Shepherd's 7.71/180 for the win. Going into Bristol for the IHRA Fallnationals, Smith held a slight points lead over Shepherd. He qualified #4 with a 7.70/181.08, and he beat Harold Robinson in round one, but in the semifinals, his late 7.65 lost to Johnson's 7.70. Shepherd went on to win, taking the IHRA Pro Stock championship. Smith finished second in points on the IHRA tour. In August, Rickie set the MIR track record at 7.70 during the Mountain Motor Nationals. Photo from Orange County CA, 1983. The last Pro Stock car Don Hardy built. |

Notes: Konigshofer was at Darlington in March for the IHRA Winternationals. The race was postponed until May after qualifying due to the weather. He had run 6.66/208.10 to qualify #6. He did not go to Bradenton for the IHRA Amelie Nationals, nor did he show up at Rockingham for the IHRA Springnationals. He returned to Darlington to complete the running of the Winternationals, but his 6.80/205.47 in the opening round lost to Tom Lee's 6.79/205. He skipped over the IHRA Summernationals at Cordova but was back on the circuit at New York for the IHRA Empire Nationals. He qualified #13 at 6.79/203.98, and he fouled away another 6.79 at 205.47 in the first round against Ron Miller, who advanced with a 6.74/206. He ran really well at the IHRA Northern Nationals, Stanton, MI. Qualified 6th at 6.82/203. Defeated Bob Holzer with a 7.14/194.41 as Holzer got out of shape (photo) and Tim Nabors off-pace 11.08/77 with a 6.87/204.01 to reach semis. He was lost to Floyd Cheek's holeshot, a 6.83/203, beating a 6.82/204.94. He also qualified really well at Norwalk for the IHRA World Nationals. His 6.72/206.86 got him the third spot in the show. Unfortunately, he fouled away a 6.73/207.46 (Top Speed) in the round against Tim Nabors, who ran 6.82/203 to advance. 6th 6.825 203.55 IHRA Stanton MI 7/31/99, 8th 6.709 207.88 IHRA Epping NH 9/11/99, 4th 6.701 207.32 IHRA Rockingham NC 9/26//99 |

Notes: Evans did not have a great start to the year when his 6.83/202.47 failed to qualify (fourth alternate) at Bradenton for the IHRA Winternationals. He was still driving his T-Bird at this event. He had his new Probe running in time for the IHRA Southern Nationals held at Darlington in May. Unfortunately, new car blues held the car back to an 8.40/115.09 best in qualifying, far off the 6.79 it took to make the field. Stewart was back in his familiar T-Bird at Cordova for the IHRA Summernationals in July. It paid off as his 6.82/201.49 in qualifying was only second to Floyd Cheek's similar 6.82 at 202. But Evans was eliminated in the first round, where his quicker, but later 6.93/200.68 lost to Bob Holzer's 6.99/195. That was the last race for the T-Bird, as now the team ran the Probe for the remainder of the year. The next IHRA event was the Empire Nationals held at New York International in mid-July. A 6.88/201.37 qualified #14 in the field. Eventual winner Jon Yoak stopped his 7.04/197.68 in the opening round with a 6.94/199. 1998 IHRA Northern Nationals, Stanton, MI. Qualified 8th at 6.78/204.88. Defeated Angelo Alesci in round one. 6.80 to 6.82 (to avenge last year's first-round loss to Alesci), but lost to Doug Kirk's holeshot in round two (photo). A 6.86/202 beating a 6.85/203. He also qualified #14 at Norwalk for the IHRA World Nationals with a 6.81/203.75. In the first round, he fouled away a 6.83/203.25 against Daniel Seamon, who advanced at 6.78/204. Everything went his way at Epping for the IHRA North American Nationals held in mid-Sept. His 6.70/206.64 qualified #2 behind Chris Holbrook's 6.69/208. A 6.73/207.72 beat Yoak's 6.81/205 in the opening round, and in round two, he defeated Dwayne Rice's troubled 10.31 with another 6.73 at 208.10. John Konigshofer got out of shape against him in the semifinal, and Evans ran 6.72/207.53 to advance. He faced the Probe of Seamon in the final. The two had a great race that saw Stewart pick up his first IHRA Pro Stock victory with a 6.69/207.56 that just nipped Daniel's slightly quicker 6.68/207. He wasn't sneaking up on the field at Maryland International for the IHRA President's Cup Championships. Everyone knew he was there as he set Low ET in qualifying #1 with a 6.67/207.02. But he didn't stick around long during eliminations as in the first round, his late 6.78/203.98 fell to Rice's 6.87/202. The season ended at Shreveport for the IHRA World Finals. There, Evans qualified #6 with a 6.76/206.10. In the opening round, he improved to 6.69/206.42 to take out Yoak's 6.71/206. But in round two, the car got slightly out of shape, and he crossed the centerline while racing Seamon, who advanced with a 6.67/207. Rick Howard photo from IHRA Stanton, MI. |

Notes: Terry started the IHRA season by qualifying #15 at Darlington for the Winternationals with a 7.51/185. He got out of shape and shut off in the first round, giving Rickie Smith the win. At Rockingham for the Pro-Am Championships, a 7.50/181.81 qualified #7. He beat Jim Ruth in the first round, but his late 7.45/187.50 lost to Roy Hill's 7.54/187.11 in round two. The "Bad Bird" was a regular qualifier on the IHRA tour, regularly running in the 7.50s. He also lasted until round two at the IHRA Springnationals at Bristol. There he lost to Smith. At Edgewater for the Summernationals, he qualified #5 with a 7.53/182. He beat Terry Walters in the first round before losing to Darrell Alderman's 7.45/187 with a 7.58/183.29 in the second round. At the PHR Championships (IHRA sanctioned) at US 131, Adams qualified #7 and beat Mike Bazell in the first round. In round two, his 7.60 lost to Billy Ewing's 7.50. On August 24, he was at Norwalk for the World Nationals. He qualified #9 but fouled in the first round against Tim Nabors. In September, he made it into the semifinals at the US Open at Rockingham. He beat Ed Dixon with a 7.46/186.72 and Dean Goforth's Camaro in round two before losing to Rickie Smith in the semis. At Bristol for the Fallnationals, Adams ran 7.40/187 to qualify #4. A first-round 7.46 beat Al Waters and in round two, a holeshot 7.53/176 beat Jim Ruth's quicker 7.47/186. Once again, he was in the semifinals, but his opponent was Bob Glidden, and Glidden's 7.30/190 buried Terry's 7.49/185. Listed times from The Drag Racing List, Volume 1, Number 9, December 86/January 87. |

Notes: Cheek qualified #8 at Bristol for the IHRA Springnationals with a 6.84/203.65.GM and Ford were at war in the "Mountain Motored" war at this race; GM had the numbers. Only four Fords qualified, and Floyd's was the second quickest of the bunch. Three of the Ford drivers lost in round one, and Cheek was one of them. His 6.82/203.65 fell to David Jenkins' 6.87/202. At Maryland International, things evened up a bit when seven Fords qualified for the IHRA President's Cup Championships. Floyd was #7 overall with a 6.81/205.52, the fourth quickest Ford driver. In the opening round, his 6.84/202.73 beat Richie Stevens' 6.85/201. In round two, he beat Jon Yoak with a 6.85/202.73, and a semi-final 6.85 defeated Jenkins' 6.89. It was Ford vs. Chevy in the final as he faced Tim Nabors, and Cheek's 6.83/204.57 got the victory for the blue oval boys over Nabor's 6.93/200. The next race on the IHRA schedule was the IHRA Summernationals at Cordova Dragway in the first week of July. Cheek's 6.84/204.68 (Top Speed) was the quickest Ford and fourth overall. John Nobile shut down against him in round one, and his 6.86/203.57 advanced. In round two, his 6.89/202.65 beat Yoak's 6.96/200. The semi-finals featured two GMs against two Fords. Floyd was hoping to make it two wins in a row, but his late 6.88/203.02 lost to eventual winner Nabors' 6.91/201. He didn't have to wait long before scoring his next win, which came at the Mid-Michigan Motorplex in August. He had "only" qualified #11 for the IHRA Northern Nationals, but he ran quick enough to win. His 6.86/204 beat Nabors' 6.90/200 in round one. Then John Montecalvo fouled against him in round two. That also happened in the final, as Richie Stevens fouled away a 6.76/204 while Cheek coasted to 13.18/61 for the victory in the all-Ford final. Shortly after that, he was at Norwalk for the IHRA World Nationals. He qualified #1 with a 6.72/206.61, and he backed up the speed for a new IHRA record. He was heading towards another final round appearance, but he fouled against Tom Lee in the semi-final. |

Notes: Mark Thomas showed up at Darlington for the IHRA Winternationals, where he ran 6.85/197.45 to qualify #2. An opening round 6.88/200.00 beat John Nobile, and in round two, his 6.93/201.65 beat Floyd Cheek's 7.00/198. In the semifinals, he faced Billy Huff, but his car went into heavy tire shake, and he shut off to 11.59 in a loss to Huff's 6.91/203. He then went to Carolina Dragway for the 1/8 mile IHRA Dixie Nitrous Nationals. A 4.51/160.11 qualified #5, but he lost to John Montecalvo in the first round. IHRA's next event was the Springnationals at Bristol, and Mark continued to qualify well. His 7.09/197.49 put him in the #12 spot for the show. But an off-pace 7.16/196.85 in the first round, lost to eventual winner Robert Patrick's 7.08/195. The IHRA Supernationals was held at Alabama International in mid-June, and Mark qualified #13 for the field with his 7.07/198.10. But he continued to have difficulties getting past the first round; this time, his 7.20/197.62 fell to Doug Kirk's 7.02/198. The IHRA tour went to New York International in July for the Empire Nationals. For the first time this season, Mark failed to qualify. His 7.20/197.41 was good for the fourth alternate. |

Notes: Smith was at Darlington in March for the IHRA Winternationals. He ran a career-best (to this point) 6.91 at 203.20 to qualify #4 in the sixteen-car field. Another strong 6.92/201.25 beat Tim Nabor's 6.99/200 in the opening round of eliminations. But despite running 6.93/200.49 in round two, he lost out to a quicker, leaving Charlie Garrett, who won with a 6.94/198. He did not run at IHRA's second race, the Dixie Nationals, but he did go to Bristol for the Springnationals. Unfortunately, his 7.13/194.93 (third alternate) failed to qualify. That was the last IHRA event Rickie ran in '94. His sponsors wanted him at the NHRA events, and with NHRA having so many races, time did not allow him to run both. |
