Notes: Doug ran hard on the IHRA trail in '92. At the season-opening Winternationals at Darlington, he qualified #13 with a 7.05/196.03. In the first round, he faced Billy Huff and lost with a 7.13/195.43 to Billy's 7.06/199. He won the next two IHRA events, the Nitrous Nationals at the 1/8 mile Huntsville track, where he qualified #2 with a 4.56/156.06 and made his way to the final where he met Gary Van Vallis and the Cornplex Nitrous Nationals where he qualified #7 with a 7.27/192.06 and in the final, his 7.24/192.71 beat a fouling Todd Tutterow. At Bristol for the IHRA Springnationals on May 31, Kirk qualified #8 with a 7.18/193.42. In the first round, a 7.16/194.26 advanced when Tutterow broke. In the second round, a 7.15/194.93 beat Jim Revis' quicker 7.11/194. In the semifinals, Rickie Smith's 7.09/195 beat Doug's 7.13/194.93. The next stop on the IHRA tour was in Canada for the Summernationals held at Cayuga on June 21. There, a 7.05/196.46 qualified Doug #5. A first-round 7.04/196.85 beat Sherrie Kamp, but in the second round, Carlton Phillips ran Low ET of the meet in beating him with a 6.99/197, stopping Kirk's 7.03/196.37. The IHRA Empire Nationals was the next race that ran on July 5. Doug used a 7.13/195.60 to qualify #8. A 7.22/185.45 advanced past the first-round when Steve Williford fouled against him. In the second round, a 7.17/194.88 lost to Huff's 7.10/196. Kirk qualified #7 with a 7.15/196.03 at the next race, the IHRA Northeast Nitrous Nationals at Epping, on July 19. He ran a first-round 7.21/195.14 over Robert McDonald's 7.20/194, but once again, he lost in the second round. This time, Harold Denton's 7.11/196 beat Doug's off pace 7.29/195.39. At Ohio Valley Raceway for the IHRA Bluegrass Nationals, another 1/8 mile race, a 4.59/155.17 qualified #4. He met Huff in the second round, and despite a quicker et of 4.58/156.16, he lost to Huff's 4.60/156. On August 16, he was at the Nebraska Motorplex for the IHRA Mid-America Nationals. He qualified #6 with a 7.12/195.31. Unfortunately, he met Huff in the first round, and lost a close 7.17/194 to Doug's 7.18/193.34. He ran well at the IHRA World Nationals, qualifying #7 with a 7.12/194.97 and running 7.17/193.09 over Kamp, a 7.16/192.14 single when Floyd Cheek broke, and another 7.16/193.00 in the semifinal over a tire shaking Jerry Yeoman. In the final, he ran Jim Revis, and Revis' 7.13/194 beat Kirk's 7.19/193.34. Up until this time, Doug had been running a relatively small 732 cubic inch motor, but back at Epping in September for the IHRA North American Nationals, he showed up with a 786. The extra cubes showed up in qualifying as a 6.95/200.75 was only second to Huff. A first-round 7.00/200.75 beat Joe Folgore's 7.23/192, and a 6.98/200.40 in the second round was good, but not good enough as Chris Hunt's 7.00/198 beat him to the finish. At the IHRA US Open at Darlington, Doug continued to run strong as a 7.02/198.76 qualified #6. He advanced past the first-round with a 7.12/193.97 when McDonald fouled, and a 7.09/196.54 got past Morris Johnson Jr's 7.16/191. In the semifinals, a 7.11/196.46 beat Jerry Yeoman's killing 15.70. In the final, he was up against Huff. Doug tried hard, but a 7.15/194.51 lost to Billy's 7.09/196. At the season-ending IHRA Fallnationals at Bristol, Doug ran a 7.11/196.50 to qualify #9. He beat Hunt in the first round, with a 7.16/196.03 and an improved 7.08/196.89 got past John Nobile's 7.22 in the second round. Yeoman ran a 7.09/195 to put Kirk's 7.15/195.56 on the trailer in the semifinals.

Notes: The 1988 IHRA season saw Billy Meyer take over and saddle the popular "monster motor" Pro Stock cars with an additional 250 lbs of weight to offset any advantage against the 500 c.i. cars that were being welcomed into the IHRA fold. Thirty-six cars were attempting to qualify for the sixteen-car field at Darlington. Of the 36, there were 14 "monster-motored" cars, and only three qualified. Nabors was one of the three, and he lasted until the semi-final before losing to Warren Johnson. He qualified #3 at DeSoto for the IHRA Supernationals. He lasted until round two, where he fouled and slowed to a 7.68 loss to Carlos Gonzalez, who advanced with a 7.54. The IHRA Texas Nationals was rained out from April 9th and run on the 17th. Tim's 7.34/188.79 qualified #3. In the opening round, his 7.36/188 beat Stan Mizell and in round two, a 7.32/189.03 defeated Jerry Eckman's 7.39/185. Johnson fouled away a 7.37/187 against him in the semi-final, and Nabors' 7.41/188.75 advanced. He faced Bob Glidden in the final, and despite running 7.36/188.75, he lost to Glidden's 7.31/184. After this race, IHRA choked down the big engines even further. Now, anything over 500 to 600 ci would get the 250 lb handicap. On top of that, for every cubic inch larger than 600, it was one lb. per cubic inch. Tim lost early at Rockingham for the IHRA Pro-Am Championships but ran much better at Bristol for the IHRA Springnationals. After winning his first-round race easily, he ran 7.55/184.95 in round two to beat Eckman. In the semi-final, his 7.56/184.80 fell to eventual winner WJ's 7.52/184. Still, he was hanging tough in the IHRA points, sitting fourth behind Rickie Smith, WJ, and Glidden. That's good company. The next stop on the IHRA tour was at Atco Dragway for the Summernationals. Nabors' 7.34/188.71 qualified #3 behind the Fords of Glidden and Smith. He had problems in the first round and slowed to 13.83 in a loss to George Cabel's 7.52/184.04.

Notes: Listed times from Drag Racing List Spring 87/88, Vol 2, Number 9. Tim was one of the strongest Chevy campaigners in '87. By late '86 and throughout the '87 season, the big inch Fords were tough to beat in IHRA competition. Chevy only won one race in '87 and this was the driver who was able to do it. At Darlington for the IHRA Winternationals, Tim qualified #3 with a 7.32/190 behind the Fords of Bob Glidden and Rickie Smith. He beat Barry Shirley and Frank Iaconio to reach the semifinals against Smith. In his race with Rickie, he encountered severe tire shake and shut off. Smith's 7.26 would have been hard to beat. The next IHRA race was the Pro-Am Championships at Rockingham. This is where Nabors picked up the win. He faced Smith in the final after beating Bob Olson in the semis. Rickie's T-Bird broke and Tim shut down to 8.00/175.43 for the victory. He didn't get very far in eliminations at Bristol for the IHRA Springnationals. He lost to fellow Camaro campaigner Darrell Alderman in the second round. Atco was the next stop on the IHRA tour and it was not a good showing for Tim as he lost in round one.

Notes: 1972 UHRA Pro Stock Champion. At Detroit, Michigan, ran 9.29/148.20. Then, running 250 lbs. light and using rosin, ran an amazing 9.11/150.50. Also ran 9.32 at Martin, Michigan. Was that legal weight or the match race configuration?

Notes: Raced a new ‘Oak Ridge Boys Ford Fairmont' at the Atlanta Raceway Mountain Motor Challenge on 10/10/81. Lost to a Warren Johnson holeshot in the semis, 7.94 to Rickie's 7.92. | Rickie Smith was having a great season with his Mustang II and in August, he was at Richmond for a best of three match race against Chuck Sneed. On one of his passes, the car blew a rear tire, got out of shape, and slid into Sneed's Camaro. The Mustang then barrel rolled down the track. The car was history, but Smith was unhurt. He needed a car to stay in the IHRA points race and Jon Kaase recommended he get in contact Wally Balchunas. Wally had a B/FX Fairmont. Kaase was impressed enough with the car, so Smith made a deal to use it to finish out the IHRA season. Smith installed the Mustang's Kaase-built 588 Boss powertrain into the Fairmont. The car needed a different hood as the car had been using a 351 Cleveland engine before and a quick call to Bob Glidden got him a new hood. The debut with the car came at Rockingham on September 13 for the IHRA US Open. In the first round, only two cars ran in the sevens, Smith (7.93/173.74) and Sox (7.91/172). But these two would meet in the second round where eventual winner Sox’s 7.87 beat Smith's out of shape 8.97.

Notes: Roy debuted his new Probe at the third race of the IHRA season, the President's Cup Championships at Maryland International. He qualified well, but in the first round, he lost to a holeshot by Steve Williford. Steve ran a 6.93 that beat Hill's quicker 6.90. Roy made up for the first-round loss by going out and winning the next race, the Springnationals at Bristol. He was running steady 7.0s with a second-round 7.03 over John Konigshofer and, in the semifinals, a 7.01 beat Robert Patrick. In the final, he ran Carlton Phillips, and a 6.99/198 got the victory over Phillips' 7.02/198. The next race went to Roy as well, the Empire Nationals at New York International. This time, his final round victim was Billy Huff. A 7.08 got the win over Huff's 7.18. His streak ended at the next IHRA race, the Summernationals, on July 9 at US 41 Morocco, Indiana. He qualified #1 with a 6.86 (Low ET) at 201.65, but in the first round, the Probe broke on the line, giving Jerry Yeoman a single into round two. Hill qualified second behind his hired driver, Mike Bell, at Bristol for the IHRA Fallnationals. His 6.86/201.70 followed Bell's 6.86/201. Craig Hankinson fouled against him in the first round, and Roy's 6.90/199.95 advanced. In the second round, his 6.92/199.11 defeated John Montecalvo's 6.99/199. In the semifinal, both he and Doug Kirk ran 6.97 (Hill at 198), but Kirk got the win light. Hill got some revenge when his driver, Bell, beat Kirk in the final.

Notes: Jim ran well on the IHRA tour in '92, he started the season at the Winternationals where a 6.96 qualified #2. Unfortunately, he fouled away a 6.97/198.54 in the first round, against Todd Tutterow's 7.10/194. At the Nitrous Nationals held on the 1/8 mile Huntsville track, he qualified #7 with a 4.59/153.47, but he failed to make it into the finals. He qualified #1 at the Springnationals at Bristol with a Low ET of the meet 7.08/194.38. He beat Chris Hunt in the first round, but in round two a late leaving 7.11/194.80 lost to Doug Kirk's 7.15/194. A 7.03/195.99 qualified #2 at the Summernationals in Canada on June 21. Once again, he left late running a first-round 7.11/195.69 that lost to Steve Williford's 7.16/193. At the Empire Nationals, a 7.08/195.43 was good enough for #3 qualifier. He beat Floyd Cheek's 7.23/191 in the first round, with a 7.13/192.06, a second round 7.17/193.63 dropped Charlie Garrett's 7.24/196, but in the semifinals, Carlton Phillips 7.18/194 beat Jim's quicker 7.16/193.79. He continued to qualify strongly at the next event, the Northeast Nitrous Nationals at Epping. There a 7.11/194.84 qualified #4. A first-round 7.15/194.00 beat David Drongowski's 7.24/193. In the second round, a 7.21/194.34 beat an off pace Joe Folgore at 7.70. Revis slowed to a 7.25/192.80 in the semifinal; which let Billy Huff's 7.12/196 advance to the final. He took a big win at the next event, the 1/8 mile Bluegrass Nationals at Ohio Valley Raceway on July 26. He qualified #3 with a 4.58/154 and ran 4.59/155.44 over Robert McDonald, a 4.55/156.08 over Mark Stockseth and a 4.55/156.16 over Tutterow's close 4.59/155. In the final, he beat Huff with a 4.56/156.19. On August 30 he was at Norwalk for the World Nationals. Jim qualified #5 with a 7.11/194.88 and after that, there was no stopping him from another win. A 7.15/193.75 advanced over a fouling McDonald and a second round 7.14/193.96 beat Dale Kindl's 7.45/184. In the semifinal, he made up for some of his late leaves by running a 7.14/194.34 to beat Harold Denton's quicker 7.06/194. In the final, he beat Doug Kirk's 7.19/193 with a 7.13/194.42. The next IHRA event was the North American Nationals at Epping on September 13. Jim ran a strong 7.02/198.28, but everyone was running well and that time was good for #9 qualifier. He beat Robert Patrick's ailing Probe in the first round, with a 7.03/198.28 and he repeated that time in the second round with a speed of 197.93, but lost to Huff's holeshot 7.07/200. At Darlington for the US Open on September 27, another 7.03/197.41 qualified #7. He slipped to a 7.19/194.09 in the first round, that lost to Gary Van Vallis' 7.13/194. At the season-ending Fallnationals at Bristol, a 7.10/194.51 qualified #5. Jim's 7.13/194.84 beat Sherrie Kamp's 7.28 in the first round, but eventual winner Jerry Yeoman's 7.10/194 beat his 7.14/195.18 in the second round.

Notes: Photo from 1981. Number 2 in IHRA 1982. | Sox opened the season by qualifying #1 at Darlington for the IHRA Winternationals with 7.76/178.21 IHRA records. He beat Harold Robinson, a fouling Pat Musi with a 7.88, and a semifinal 7.86 beat Frank Cappadoro. A final round 7.90/176 gave Sox his 13th career IHRA victory over a fouling Harold Denton. In April, he was scheduled to run a best of three match race against Joe Lepone at Budds Creek, but he lost a motor in their first race and had to withdraw. He ran just as well at IHRA's second event of the year, the Pro-Am Nationals at Rockingham. Once again he qualified #1 with a 7.75/177.16 (Low ET and Top Speed), but in round two he lost to Rickie Smith. On June 20 at Norwalk for the IHRA World Nationals, Ronnie qualified #3 with a 7.86. He made it to the final, but his 7.87/175 was runner-up to Smith's 7.76/179. He won the IHRA Northern Nationals in July, stopping Warren Johnson in the final. Sox was the 8th member of the Holley Seven-Second club with his 7.79 at Rockingham 5/82.

Notes: At the IHRA Springnationals, Charlie qualified thirteenth with a 7.81/178. He fouled against Bob Glidden in the first round. In early July, he ran well at Milan, Michigan, for the IHRA Northern Nationals. Charlie won his opening round race easily enough, and his 7.70 beat Sam Carroll in the second round. He lost to Rickie Smith in the semi-final in an all-T-Bird battle. In early August, he went to Edgewater for the IHRA Summernationals, he ran really well, qualifying #4 with a 7.64, and in the first round, he got out of shape but still won when Alan Marsh crossed the centerline. In the second round, his 7.70/180.36 beat Joe Lepone Jr. He fouled against eventual winner Smith in the semi-final. Shortly after that, he was at Norwalk for the IHRA World Nationals. His 7.66/181.45 qualified #7, and he beat Jerry Janota in the opening round of eliminations. Unfortunately, he lost to Smith in round two. In September, at the IHRA US Open at Rockingham, he qualified sixth with a 7.57.

Notes: Charlie qualified #6 at the season-opening IHRA Winternationals with a 731 ci engine running 6.99/198.28. A first-round 7.09/198.54 lost to Jerry Yeoman's 7.07/197. At the second event, the IHRA Bama Nationals, a 1/8 mile track, he used the same engine to qualify #5 with a 5.52/157.92. Another 4.52 at 158.25 beat Steve Williford (4.59/155) in the first round. Yet a third 4.52/157.86 beat Chris Hunt (4.58/155) to get him into the semifinal where a 4.53/157.97 lost to Doug Kirk's slower 4.57/157. It was on to Bristol in June for the IHRA Springnationals where a 7.04/194.46 qualified #2. A 7.19/193.79 beat Terry Walters (7.28/192), but he slept in the second round when Terry Leggett's 7.18/196 beat Garrett's quicker 7.10/194.67. At the next event, the IHRA Empire Nationals at New York, he again qualified #2 with a 7.11/196.29 and a first-round 7.18/194.93 beat Mark Thomas (7.24/191) in the second frame a 7.15/193.88 took out Williford (7.20/193). In the semifinal, Floyd Cheek's 7.20/194 beat Charlie's quicker 7.18/195.60. He then ran at MIR on July 14 for the Mountain Motor nationals and although the event was rained out they did get in qualifying and the first-round. A 7.19/192.88 qualified #7, but an off pace 8.79 lost to Ron Miller's 7.26/190.55 in the first round. July 18 saw Garrett running a 6.98/195.43 to qualify #4 at Atco for the IHRA Summernationals. A first-round 7.14/176.33 beat John Nobile (7.30/193). He lost to Floyd Cheek's 7.09/196 in the second round. All these races were run with the 731, but on July 25 he showed up at New England Dragway for the IHRA Northeast Nationals with a bigger 765 engine. A 7.03/196.29 qualified #8 and a first-round 7.01/196.72 beat Robert Patrick (7.20/193). A second round 7.12/195.77 fell to Roy Hill's 6.95/199. At the IHRA Mid-America Nationals at the Nebraska Motorplex on August 15 a 7.12/194.51 qualified #5 and a first-round 7.16/191.81 beat Carlton Phillips (7.21/190). In the second round, a 7.17/191.44 lost to Harold Denton's 7.14/193. It was on to the IHRA World Nationals on August 29. A 7.09/195.48 qualified #8, but tire shake slowed him to a 9.21 in the first round, losing to Cheek's 7.11/195. Garrett continued to qualify in the top half of the field at the next race, the IHRA North American Nationals, where a 6.96/198.19 was #6 on the grid. A first-round 6.93/199.37 beat Jim Revis (7.02/197). He made it into the semifinal before Doug Kirk's 6.95/200 beat his quicker 6.94/199.51. Back at Maryland in October for the IHRA President's Cup Championships, Garrett ran a 6.93/198.67 to qualify #6 and a career-best 6.92 at 198.36 beat Cheek (7.09/192) in the first round. Unfortunately, he fouled against Hill in round two. At the season-ending IHRA Fallnationals at Bristol on October 10, a 7.03/195.31 (#6) kept his qualifying in the top half of the field streak alive. A holeshot by Terry Leggett (7.02/195) beat his 6.99/195.77 and ended his season.

Notes: Glidden had NHRA always weight factoring his Ford combinations. Any time he starting dominating the class, NHRA always threw more weight on his cars. This being said, he liked having a chance to throw out all the extra weight and run his cars in match race competition. In June 1978, Glidden had his Pinto at York US 30 for a best of three match race against Larry Lombardo, driving Bill Jenkins' Monza. In their first race, Glidden took it with no times recorded for either driver. Lombardo's 8.29/161 won in the second race when Glidden fouled away an 8.27/166.35. Bob wrapped up the match in the third race, where he ran 8.25/163.05 to beat Larry, who got out of shape and shut down. With his busy NHRA schedule, he couldn't run a lot of match races, but he did run at Maryland International on August 16 for the Mountain Motor Nationals. It was an eight-car field, and his 8.27 qualified #4. Another 8.27/162.45 in the opening round beat Bill Clayton, and in the semifinals, he made an easy pass when Lombardo fouled against him. He faced the "king" of Pro Stock match racers in the final, "Dyno Don" Nicholson. The final didn't turn out to be much of a race as Glidden's engine blew just after leaving the line, and Don ran 8.23/163 for the victory.

Notes: Craig was at Darlington in March for the IHRA Winternationals. He qualified #6 with a career-best (to this point) 6.91/201.56. The run got him into Sonny's 200 mph club. In the first round, he ran 6.93/201.88 to beat Jerry Yeoman. In the second round, his 7.02/199.29 lost to Billy Huff's 6.89/203. He continued to run well at IHRA's second event of the season, the Dixie Nationals at the 1/8 mile Carolina Dragway. A 4.47/160.14 qualified #2 and set a new IHRA 1/8 mile record as Floyd Cheek qualified #1 with a 4.47 but failed to back it up for the record. But an off-pace 4.76/153.37 in the first round, lost to David Jenkins' 4.63/155. He then ran at Tulsa's independent Springnationals, where he qualified #2 in the eight-car field with a 6.87/201. He lost to Huff's 6.85/201 in the first round, with a 6.90/201. He had another great qualifying effort at Bristol for the IHRA Springnationals, where his 7.02/197.97 qualified #2. He beat Steve Williford in round one, with a 7.08/197.45, while in round two, a 7.10/196.67 beat Doug Kirk's close 7.12/197. In the semifinals, he beat Canadian John Konigshofer's off-pace 7.48/188 with a 7.11/196.37, putting him in the final against Robert Patrick. It was a good close final, but Robert's 7.10/194 beat Craig's 7.11/196.97. He finished runner-up at the next IHRA event as well, the Supernationals at Alabama International. Craig qualified #2 for the third IHRA race in a row with a 6.95/200.66, and he advanced past a tire-shaking Harold Denton in the first round with a 7.02/199.11. In round two, tire shake also took out Floyd Cheek, and Craig moved on with a 7.20/196.97. In the semifinals, he outran Tim Nabors' 7.15/188 with a 7.06/198.36, setting up a final-round meeting with Roy Hill. There was no stopping Hill this day, as in the final, he ran 6.94/200 for the victory over Hankinson's 7.08/199.11. Craig was at the Nebraska Motorplex in mid-August for the IHRA Mid-America Nationals. Unfortunately, he ended up as the first alternate with a 7.09/198.80 best. He then went to Norwalk for the IHRA World Nationals. A 7.04/198.50 qualified #13. He fouled away a 7.14/195.80 in the first round against Mike Bell, who advanced with a 7.05/196.

Notes: After qualifying third with a 7.85 at the IHRA Winternationals, he lost in the first round. Smith ran a best of 7.89 on the way to a runner-up finish to Warren Johnson at the IHRA Pro-Am race at Rockingham on May 2. Both he and WJ ran 7.92 in the final. Rickie's next good showing was on June 20 at Norwalk for the IHRA World Nationals. There he stopped Ronnie Sox in the final with a 7.76/179 to Sox's 7.87/175. His 7.76 was Low ET and he also had Top Speed at a track record 181.08. Another win came at Bristol for the IHRA Summernationals beating WJ in the final while again setting Top Speed, this time at 176.47. And at the IHRA Northern Nationals, while he didn't make the final, he again set Top Speed at 181. - Rick Howard | Bubba Corzine told me he thought Rickie went mid 7.60s in 1982. We need to confirm actual best big inch ET. - BP
