Notes: Charlie opened his season by winning the IHRA Winternationals at Darlington. He qualified his 786 c. i. Firebird #5 in the field with a 6. 91/198.32 and then ran another 6.91 at 198.36 in the first round, to beat John Montecalvo's 7.04/197. In round two he had a tough race against Rickie Smith. Garrett got a slight holeshot and his 6.94/198.19 beat Rickie's quicker 6.93/200. Robert Patrick got crossed up and shut off against him in the semifinals, but Charlie still laid down a 6. 95/197.06. In the final he faced off against Billy Huff. The two Firebird drivers had a good race, but Garrett took the victory with a 6.97/197.06 beating Huff's 7.04/202. IHRA's second race of the season was the 1/8 mile Dixie Nationals at Carolina Dragway. Charlie qualified #5 with a 4.56/157.28 and he improved to a 4.52/158.25 in the first round, to beat Terry Housley. In round two, his 4.55/157.42 advanced when David Jenkins' Firebird broke. In the semifinals, Charlie slowed to a 4.67/153.03 that lost to Roy Hill's 4.51/158. At Bristol, for the IHRA Springnationals, a 7.09/195.01 qualified #14. A 7.10/188.40 advanced past a fouling Floyd Cheek in round one, but in the second round, Garrett had trouble and shut off to a 7.77/149.55 that lost to Canadian John Konigshofer's 7.25/194. Notes: Cheek had a very good season in 1999. The IHRA season started in Darlington in March for the Winternationals. Cheek's 6.633/208.20 qualified #3, but the race was rained out after qualifying. Near the end of the month, IHRA held its Amalie Nationals at Bradenton. Floyd qualified #5 at 6.70/207.42. In the opening round, his 6.77/205.90 defeated John Montecalvo's 6.80/202. He then ran another 6.77 at 205.52 in round two to beat Charlie Peppers' 6.86/201. Gene Wilson had problems against him in the semi-final and Cheek's 6.76/205.66 advanced. It was a all-Ford final as he faced Jon Yoak. Yoak fouled away a 6.77/206 while Floyd ran 6.76/205.85 for the victory. The next stop was at Rockingham for the IHRA Springnationals. Cheek qualified #3 at 6.72/207.70 and went on to win this race as well. In round one, a 6.94/203.29 took out Jeremy Bevins' quicker 6.85/203. In the second round, his 6.81/204.73 stopped Tim Nabors' 6.85/202. In the semi-final, he picked it up to 6.71/207.70 to beat Chris Holbrook's quicker 6.68/208. Once again he faced Yoak in the final and this time Cheek's 6.74/206.99 got the better of Jon's 6.75/207. IHRA then returned to Darlington to wrap up its Winternationals. It appeared as though Cheek would make it three wins in a row in IHRA competition. He started by running 6.80/203.80 over Bevins' 6.83/205. In the second round, his 6.74/205.04 beat Tom Lee's 6.79/200. A 6.73 in the semi-final put a end to Yoak's 6.83 and he faced low qualifier Holbrook in the final. The two had a good race but Holbrook's 6.72/206 snagged the victory over Floyd's 6.74/204.60. It was then off to Cordova for the IHRA Summernationals. Floyd qualified #4 with a 6.75/206.70. In round one, his 6.84/204.26 beat Peppers' 6.86/203. But in round two, he fouled away a 6.84/203.83 against eventual winner Lee's 6.85/205. Shortly after that, he was at New York for the IHRA Empire Nationals. He ran 6.71/206.99 to qualify #7 but suffered his first first-round loss when his 6.77/206.29 fell to Dwayne Rice's 6.78/205. He qualified #7 at the IHRA Northern Nationals with a 6.83/203.65. A easy 7.05/193.46 advanced in the first round when Gene Wilson got out of shape and shut off. Montecalvo also had problems against him and shut down in the second round. Cheek ran 6.85/203.31 to advance. In the semi-final, he got out on John Konigshofer and his 6.83/203.80 held off John's better 6.82/204. He went up against Ron Miller in the final. Ron's times had been better than his throughout eliminations. But Floyd pulled onre "out of the hat," as his holeshot 6.83/204.01 in the final got him another victory over Miller's better 6.79/205. 1999 IHRA Northern Nationals, Stanton, MI. 1997 IHRA Pro Stock Champ qualified 7th (no times), defeated and out-of-shape Gene Wilson in Round 1 with a winning 7.05/193 and John Montecalvo in Round 2 with a 6.85/203. In the semis, Cheek's holeshot 6.83/203 beat a quicker, but losing 6.82 by Jon Konigshofer in the semis and finally another holeshot win over Ron Miller in the final. A 6.83/204 beating a 6.79/205 for his third win of year. Photo is final round action. Testing: 6.896 163.36 Darlington SC 2/28/99, 5th Bradenton FL 3/27/99, 3rd 6.727 207.70 IHRA Rockingham NC 4/10/99, 4th 6.752 206.70 IHRA Cordova IL 6/19/99, 6.702 207.80 IHRA Rockingham NC 9/25/99, 6.740 205.94 IHRA Gilliam LA 10/17/99 |

Notes: Dowey qualified #4 at Bristol for the IHRA Springnationals in June. After an easy first-round win, he ran 7.87/176.44 in round two to advance to the semifinal. There he lost to the eventual winner Rickie Smith. Johnny ran really well at Budds Creek for the Mountain Motor Nationals. It was a sixteen-car field, and he reached the final. His opening round 7.79 beat Carlton Phillips, and in round two, a 7.88 stopped Joe Lepone in Bill Jenkins' Camaro. A quick-leaving 7.95 in the semifinals beat Frank Iaconio's quicker 7.79. He faced Smith in the final. Smith got the "jump," and his 7.87 held on to win over Dowey's 7.81. Dowey was at Rockingham in September for the IHRA US Open Championships. He qualified #9 with a 7.83/175.43 but lost to Lee Shepherd in the opening round. He also qualified #9 at Bristol for the IHRA Fallnationals, where once again, he lost to Shepherd in the first round. |

Notes: While ten Firebirds made the field at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, only one made the field at Bradenton for the IHRA Winternationals. Unfortunately, it wasn't Dwayne's. Thirty-one teams were attempting to qualify for the sixteen-car area, and only four of them were driving Firebirds. Rice's was the third quickest of the four at 6.85/202.65. That ended up as the fifth alternate. He was one of two Firebird drivers who made Darlington's field for the IHRA Southern Nationals. His 6.77/204.51 qualified #12. Rick Ruth qualified the other on the "bump." Both were gone after round one. Rice's 6.80/204.76 fell to John Montecalvo's 6.79/205. Rice qualified #$7 at Cordova for the IHRA Summernationals with a 6.86/200.77. He beat Carl Baker in the first round with a 6.95/199.88. Three Firebirds had qualified for this race, and the two remaining drivers faced off in round two. Rice didn't need a 6.90/200.32 as Bob Holzer fouled against him. In the semi-final, he faced eventual winner Ron Miller and both ran 6.91 (Rice at 198.99). Shortly after that, he was at Maryland International for its Mountain Motor Nationals. It was an eight-car field, and his 6.83/202.70 qualified #5. He cut a good light in the first round, and his 6.82/203.16 beat Doug Kirk's 6.80/202. In the semi-final, he fouled against low qualifier, Montecalvo. His next stop was in New York for the IHRA Empire Nationals in July. His 6.81/201.97 qualified second to Montecalvo's 6.78/202. But he had problems in the first round when he got crossed up against Holzer and ended up bouncing off the guardrail. He was not hurt. Photo: 1998 IHRA Northern Nationals, Stanton, MI. Qualified 11th at 6.78/204.63 in the former Larry Morgan Firebird. He lost a close one to Chris Holbrook in round one, 6.810/205.54 to 6.813/205.16. |

Notes: Chris didn't race at the IHRA Winternats, but he ran the second event of the season the IHRA Bama Nationals on April 18. On the 1/8 mile track he ran a 4.54/156.11 to qualify #13. A first-round 4.76/133.94 advanced when Billy Ewing fouled away a 4.59/156. In the second round a 4.58/155.97 fell to Charlie Garrett's 4.52/157. At the IHRA Springnationals, a 7.18/192.76 qualified on the bump and another 7.18/193.50 in the first round, fell to Doug Kirk's 7.06/197. He qualified one spot better at #15 with a 7.19/192.76 at the IHRA Empire Nationals, but he hurt parts and was unable to run. He then went to Maryland for the Mountain Motor Nationals where he qualified a great fourth with a 7.13/193.84 and before the rains came and rained out the show he ran another 7.13/193.46 to beat Rickie Smith in the first round. At Atco for the IHRA Summernationals, a 7.01/195.69 qualified #7. A first-round 7.08/195.05 beat Jim Revis, but an off pace 7.33/193.42 lost to Kirk's 7.17/197 in the second round. A 7.09/197.02 just made the field (#16) at the IHRA Northeast Nationals. Roy Hill beat him in the first round, with a 6.94/199. Chris didn't run at the IHRA Mid America Nationals at Nebraska Motorplex, and he failed to qualify at the IHRA World Nationals, where a 7.22/193.54 was good for the sixth alternate. He skipped the last three events. |

Notes: Nobile was at Darlington for the IHRA Winternationals. He qualified #15 but did well in eliminations. His 6.91/189.07 advanced when Mike Bell crossed the centerline in round one. He got to make an easy solo in round two as his would-be opponent, Terry Walters, had crashed and could not run. He lost to Harold Denton in the semifinal. |

Notes: This was the car to beat on the UDRA circuit. Bob started the season by qualifying on the "bump" at Darlington for the IHRA Winternationals with a 7.51/180. In the first round, he lost to Roy Hill when he had clutch issues and slowed to 7.92/184. He was at Byron Dragway for the UDRA Springnationals in May. Olson ran 7.72/178.92 (Top Speed) to qualify #2. The car was consistent, running 7.74/177 over Gary Duckworth and 7.71/178.21 to reach the finals where he was to meet low qualifier Don Coonce. Don had broken in his semifinal win and was a no-show for the final. Bob ran a solo 7.70/178.21 for the victory. At Bristol for the IHRA Springnationals, the team didn't qualify so well (#14), but they did well in eliminations. In the first round, Hill fouled, and in round two, Bob Glidden got out of shape in his T-Bird and shut off. This put Olson into the semifinal, where he lost to the race's eventual winner Darrell Alderman in Jerry Haas' Camaro. He ran an incredible speed of 182.18 while qualifying #8 at St. Louis for the IHRA Gateway Nationals. Unfortunately, he lost to Charlie Peppers in the first round. The next IHRA race was the Northern Nationals at Milan. Bob qualified #11, but in the first round, he fouled against Hill. At the NHRA Summernationals, the team was #8 in qualifying, and Olson beat Bob Harris in round one, but in the second round, he fouled against Glidden. He had to gamble on the 'tree as Glidden ran 7.41 compared to his 7.63 on the run. Back on his "home" turf, the UDRA, he won the Hoosier Nationals at Muncie. He had only qualified #4 in the eight-car field with an 8.05/178, but he beat Jeff Wick's Arrow in the first round, with an 8.34/167, and in the semifinals, he picked up to a 7.88/179 to beat a wheelstanding Jim Feurer. He was up against low qualifier Bill Kuhlmann in the final, and the two had a great race with Bob's 7.75/179 winning over Bill's 7.72/182.81. The PHR Championships were running under IHRA rules. Bob qualified #5 at 7.54/184.52, but he fouled against Hill in the first round. He then went to Wisconsin International Raceway for the UDRA Summernationals. Bob's 7.88/177 qualified #2 behind Bill Kuhlman's 7.83/185. These two would work their way into the final. Olson ran 7.81/177 over Charlie Hnatek, and he then dropped Jeff Wick in the semifinal. Bill had been running slightly quicker in eliminations, running a 7.78 best. Olson ran the better time in the final with a 7.85/173, but he lost to Kuhlman's quick-leaving,7.90/182. To add insult to injury, Olson had held the track record coming into this race at 7.88, but Kuhlman now reset it to 7.78. He continued to qualify well at Norwalk for the IHRA World Nationals. He got the #7 spot in the sixteen-car field and defeated Terry Walters in the opening round. Unfortunately, he lost to Darrell Alderman in round two. In September, Olson was a little off his usual pace at Rockingham for the IHRA US Open Championships. He only qualified #10, and he lost in the opening round of competition. 237 IHRA, UDRA racer. Notes: Don was at Englishtown in June for a best of three match race against Bill Jenkins."In their first race, Dyno's" 8.91/152.80 lost to Jenkins' 8.75/155. Bill then let Larry Lombardo take over driving the Vega. In the next race, Larry ran 8.73/154 to beat Don's 8.97/130.73. It just wasn't Nicholson's day as in the last race, the Mustang II launched its engine. Shortly after that, Don made up for it at Cayuga for another match against Jenkins. An 8.79/155.70 beat Bill's 9.03/128 in the first race. But the Vega had dropped a valve and could not run after that. Jim Oddy's BB/A Fiat filled in for the next two races. A handicap start was used, and Don won both of the remaining races with duplicate 8.71 times with speeds of 155.70 and 155.97. He ran 8.72 at an Aquasco match race and 8.80/152.54 at an East Haddam CT match race with Jenkins. Don crashed and destroyed the car in late July 1974. Car was IHRA legal. |

Notes: Machacek had raced in Pro Stock since the early '80s. He had really been competitive in the late '90s. Then things picked up for him. He started the '97 season at Darlington for the IHRA Winternationals. He showed that the car was more than capable of running with the leaders by qualifying #3. A 6.72 easily advanced past the first round, and in round two, he beat Ron Miller. He took out Tim Nabors in the semi-final with a 6.78/203.94. This was Ed's second IHRA final-round appearance. He faced Richie Stevens in the final, and Ed had the advantage based on performance. Stevens' semi-final win came at 6.81, so Machacek also had lane choice for the final. But Ed ran his slowest pass of the day while Stevens ran his quickest, and the Ford driver's 6.79 got the win over Ed's 6.82. Ed qualified #14 at Bristol for the IHRA Springnationals with a 6.88/202.73. Another 6.88 at 200.92 in the first round lost to Tony Gillig's identical 6.88/202. Shortly after, he was at Maryland International for the IHRA President's Cup Championships. He qualified #13 at 6.84/203.66. But he slowed to 6.95/200.02 in the opening round and lost to John Konigshofer's 6.85/203. He was at Cordova for the IHRA Summernationals in the first week of July. His 6.89/200.71 qualified #14. In the first round, he and his opponent, Pete Berner, had run 6.90 (Ed at 201.16), but the win light came on in Berner's lane. He also qualified #14 at the IHRA Northern Nationals with a 6.85/202.65. The first round continued to give him a hard time, and his 6.86/201.70 lost to John Montecalvo's 6.87/202. Despite these first-round losses, he was still in ninth in IHRA points. Bristol was the next stop on the IHRA schedule for the Autumn Nationals. Ed qualified #13 at 6.88/201.97. That was still pretty good, as people thought the NHRA fields were tough; IHRA was pretty stout, too. His time was better than Nabors, Doug Kirk, and Steve Williford, among others. In round one, he upset Angelo Alesci's 6.87/202 with a quick-leaving 6.89/201.82. In round two, he continued to impress as both he and Montecalvo had run 6.93 (Ed at 201.04), but Machacek got the win. His ride ended in the semi-final, where low qualifier and eventual winner Tony Gillig's 6.85/202 beat his 6.92/201.01. He moved up to eighth in the points. Norwalk had been postponed due to rain, and the IHRA World Nationals were not run until mid-September. It took a 6.77 to make the show, and Ed just got in with his 6.77/204.26, qualifying #15. Once again, he had a close race where both drivers ran the same time. In the first round, he and David Jenkins both ran 6.79 (Machacek at 203.75), but he lost this one. |

Notes: John qualified #10 at Bristol for the IHRA Springnationals with a 6.87/204.57 (Top Speed of the meet). In the first round of eliminations, his 6.85/203.65 beat Tim Nabors' 6.90/200. In the second round, John had problems and shut down to a 9.57/90.73 loss to eventual winner Angelo Alesci. He followed the IHRA tour to Maryland for the President's Cup Championships, where he qualified #4 with a 6.81/203.66. In round one, his 6.85/203.65 beat Ed Machacek's 6.95/200, but once again, in round two, he shut off with problems, and his slowing 12.44 lost to Nabors' 6.95. The next IHRA event was the Summernationals held at Cordova Dragway in July. Konigshofer qualified #7 with a 6.85/204.45, but he had a close first-round race with Richie Stevens that saw his 6.89/203.52 lose to Richie's 6.87/201. In September, he was back at Bristol for the IHRA Autumn Nationals, where his 6.89/202.58 qualified on the "bump." In the opening round, his 6.91/202.21 lost to low qualifier Tony Gillig's 6.83/202. |
