Notes: Swept Bristol IHRA races in 1984: Springs with a 7.566 at 183.29 and Falls with a 7.556 at 186.33. Ran 7.565/183.67 at IHRA Cincinnati. Note: the hood scoops were later outlawed. | The Texas Trio was out in force to win the IHRA and the NHRA Championships in '84. The IHRA season started in March at Darlington for the Winternationals. The team had changed some things from the '83 season. The car was now using a lower first gear. The rear end was switched from 5.29 to 4.88 and a heavier clutch was used. A larger rear spoiler was also used. On Lee's first qualifying attempt, a sidewall split on a rear slick and he logged an 11-second time. But after that, he ran 7.52, 7.50, 7.49, and 7.48/186.72 (Top Speed). Any one of those runs was good enough for the pole. In the opening round, Shepherd’s 7.54/183 advanced when Don Campanello fouled. Sam Carroll fouled against him in round two and Lee moved forward with a 7.49/185. He set Low ET in the semifinals with a 7.47/185 over Roy Hill who also fouled. He faced #2 qualifier, Darrell Alderman, in Gary Duckworth's Camaro in the final. Lee got the victory with a 7.49/184.42 while Alderman shut down early. Both Lee's 7.47 and 186.72 marks were new IHRA records. The team also won the IHRA Pro-Am Championships at Rockingham. Lee qualified #1, set Low ET at 7.48, and beat Rickie Smith in the final. The next IHRA event was the Springnationals held at Bristol. A 7.57 (Low ET) at 181.45 qualified #1. A first-round 7.59/183.67 beat Smith and he downed another Ford in round two, the T-Bird of Bob Glidden. Lee’s 7.60/184.80 stopped Glidden's 7.64/183. In the semifinals, his 7.61/182.92 beat Joe Lepone's 7.68/180 in the "Palmer Bros." Firebird. His final round victim at this race was Billy Ewing, driving the former Johnny Dowey Camaro. Shepherd took the win with a 7.70/183.29 over Ewing's 7.75/177. Milan was tough on the other Pro Stock racers. Nobody else in IHRA Pro Stock racing had yet to run a 7.4 and the Reher-Morrison team had a habit of making it look easy. They showed up at Milan with a 640 cubic inch engine combination. At the Northern Nationals, Lee reset the IHRA record to 7.45 in qualifying #1. His speed on the run was 187.11. He then ran 7.47/186, 7.56/184 (over Warren Johnson), and 7.51/184 to reach the final. He faced Smith again and the results were the same, Shepherd’s 7.52/185.95 scored the win over Rickie's 7.58/182. The next stop on the IHRA tour was at Edgewater for the IHRA Summernationals. Shepherd took his 12th consecutive pole with a 7.58/181.81. He then improved to a 7.51 for Low ET and in the semifinals, his 7.56/183.67 beat Hill. For the third time in '84 the final came down to Smith vs. Shepherd. For the first time in '84, Rickie was able to turn the tables and win. He put a holeshot on Lee that saw his 7.63/183 beat Shepherd's 7.56/184.42 (Top Speed). Of course, Lee qualified #1 at Norwalk for the IHRA World Nationals. The track record going into this race was 7.67 and Lee ran 7.48/184.80 for the pole. A 7.49 beat Alderman in the opening round and he then beat Lepone and Smith to reach the final against Hill. Roy fouled and Shepherd claimed another IHRA title with a 7.51/184.04.

Notes: Ronnie Sox debuted this car in the A/FX class at Pomona. He did not race the car at Darlington for IHRA's season-opening Winternationals, nor was he at Rockingham in April for the IHRA Pro-Am Championships. But by the time the IHRA tour got to Atlanta in May for the Dixie Nationals, Sox and Martin decided to enter IHRA's Mountain-Motored Pro Stock class. Sox set Low ET and Top Speed in qualifying #1 for the sixteen-car field with an 8.33/164.53. He beat Bobby Yowell in the first round and also won his second-round race, but broke and was unable to return for the semifinals. At Bristol for the IHRA Springnationals, Ronnie ran 8.53 to qualify #5. An opening round 8.54/158.73 beat Terry Adams' 8.79/152. In round two, his 8.51 beat Harry Del Prete's 8.68, and a semifinal 8.53/158.17 stopped Pat Musi's 8.58/160. In the final, he faced the "killer car" on the IHRA circuit, the Vega of Lee Edwards. Lee had been running 8.3s throughout eliminations to reach the final. The final was no different as his 8.36/163.93 beat Sox's 8.52/154.90. The team was not at Milan for the IHRA Northern Nationals. On August 16, Budds Creek held its Mountain Motor Nationals. It was an eight-car show, and Sox's 8.32 qualified #5. He faced low qualifier Edwards in the first round, and Sox's off-pace 8.80/157 lost to Lee's 8.10. A few days later (August 20), Sox was at Rockingham for the IHRA US Open Championships. Eighteen cars attempted to qualify for the eight-car field, and Ronnie's 8.47 qualified #3. But in the first round, Roy Hill had a great leave and ran slower than Sox but won. Also ran as an A/FX. This car was the former gold Don Carlton car and Zorian's Colt in 1977 that was rebodied in 78. Number 9 in IHRA 1978.

Notes: Terry started the IHRA season by qualifying #15 at Darlington for the Winternationals with a 7.51/185. He got out of shape and shut off in the first round, giving Rickie Smith the win. At Rockingham for the Pro-Am Championships, a 7.50/181.81 qualified #7. He beat Jim Ruth in the first round, but his late 7.45/187.50 lost to Roy Hill's 7.54/187.11 in round two. The "Bad Bird" was a regular qualifier on the IHRA tour, regularly running in the 7.50s. He also lasted until round two at the IHRA Springnationals at Bristol. There he lost to Smith. At Edgewater for the Summernationals, he qualified #5 with a 7.53/182. He beat Terry Walters in the first round before losing to Darrell Alderman's 7.45/187 with a 7.58/183.29 in the second round. At the PHR Championships (IHRA sanctioned) at US 131, Adams qualified #7 and beat Mike Bazell in the first round. In round two, his 7.60 lost to Billy Ewing's 7.50. On August 24, he was at Norwalk for the World Nationals. He qualified #9 but fouled in the first round against Tim Nabors. In September, he made it into the semifinals at the US Open at Rockingham. He beat Ed Dixon with a 7.46/186.72 and Dean Goforth's Camaro in round two before losing to Rickie Smith in the semis. At Bristol for the Fallnationals, Adams ran 7.40/187 to qualify #4. A first-round 7.46 beat Al Waters and in round two, a holeshot 7.53/176 beat Jim Ruth's quicker 7.47/186. Once again, he was in the semifinals, but his opponent was Bob Glidden, and Glidden's 7.30/190 buried Terry's 7.49/185. Listed times from The Drag Racing List, Volume 1, Number 9, December 86/January 87.

Notes: Roy Hill had a great year driving for Joe Penny in '87. He started his IHRA Campaign at the Winternationals, qualifying eighth with a 7.41/185. The car kept on running quicker. In round one, his 7.38/189 beat Bob Harris' 7.51/190. A second round 7.34/190 beat Jim Ruth's "Party Time" Firebird. In the semifinals, he ran his best of the weekend, a 7.30/191 to beat Billy Ewing's 7.43/191. That set up an all-Ford final against Rickie Smith. In the final, Roy's car was unable to stage as it kept creeping forward before fouling. Roy hesitated and then hammered it getting a strange 7.83 time at a speed of 194.80. Rickie won with a 7.17/191. At the Rockingham Pro-Am race, he qualified second with a 7.40/188.67, but he had problems in the first round, and his 8.01/187.11 lost to alternate Kenny Tripp's 7.93/173. Terry Adams' holeshot 7.53/190 beat Hill's quicker 7.44/188 in the semis at the Springnationals. At Atco for the Summernationals, he qualified with a 7.21/192. Hill ran 7.30/191 over Rickie Smith's quicker 7.26 in the semis before losing to Bob Glidden's 7.23 with a 7.27 in the final. Roy set Low ET at 7.25 and ran a career best speed of 196.07 at Milan for the Northern Nationals. He made it into the semifinals before his 7.31/192.30 lost to Smith's 7.28/193. But he won the next race, the World Nationals at Norwalk. There, he set Low ET in qualifying #1 with a 7.31. A first-round 7.32/188 beat Smith while a round two 7.37/189.08 beat Glidden's out of shape machine. A 7.33/190.27 in the semifinals stopped Tim Nabors' 7.44/189 from advancing. In the final he faced Jerry Haas. Jerry fouled and Hill ran 7.32/189.87 for the victory.

Notes: Listed times from Drag Racing List Spring 87/88, Vol 2, Number 9. Tim was one of the strongest Chevy campaigners in '87. By late '86 and throughout the '87 season, the big inch Fords were tough to beat in IHRA competition. Chevy only won one race in '87 and this was the driver who was able to do it. At Darlington for the IHRA Winternationals, Tim qualified #3 with a 7.32/190 behind the Fords of Bob Glidden and Rickie Smith. He beat Barry Shirley and Frank Iaconio to reach the semifinals against Smith. In his race with Rickie, he encountered severe tire shake and shut off. Smith's 7.26 would have been hard to beat. The next IHRA race was the Pro-Am Championships at Rockingham. This is where Nabors picked up the win. He faced Smith in the final after beating Bob Olson in the semis. Rickie's T-Bird broke and Tim shut down to 8.00/175.43 for the victory. He didn't get very far in eliminations at Bristol for the IHRA Springnationals. He lost to fellow Camaro campaigner Darrell Alderman in the second round. Atco was the next stop on the IHRA tour and it was not a good showing for Tim as he lost in round one.

Notes: Jim qualified on the "bump" at Darlington for the IHRA Winternationals with a 7.52/189. He upset low qualifier Bob Glidden in the first round with a 7.72/180 over Bob's tire-shaking 8.02/163. In the second round, his 7.70/181 fell to Roy Hill's 7.34/190. Ruth qualified #8 at Rockingham for the IHRA Pro-Am Championships with a 7.52/187.11. A late 7.53/187.50 lost to Terry Adams' 7.59/183 in the opening round. He fouled against Hill in the second round at Atco for the IHRA Summernationals. At Milan, Michigan, he ran a career-best speed (to this point) of 194.80 during qualifying. Unfortunately, he lost in the opening round.

Notes: Darrell won the Memorial Day Pro Stock race at Thunder Valley. He had run track records of 7.66/181.08 in time trials. He qualified #1 in the eight-car field with a 7.72/179.28. A first-round 7.75/179.28 beat Jim Feurer and a 7.81 in the semifinals beat Ed Machacek. This put him into the final against Bill Kuhlmann. The two had a good race, with Darrell's 7.78/179.28 getting the victory over Kuhlmann's 7.89/176.

Notes: Tim failed to qualify at the IHRA Winternationals, but at the second IHRA event of the season, the IHRA Nitrous Nationals on May 3 at the 1/8 mile Huntsville Dragway, he qualified #8 with a 4.59/160.91 (Top Speed). A 4.62/153.87 in the first round, beat Harold Denton's close 4.64/154, but in round two tire shake forced him to shut down to a 5.91/83.83 loss to Bob Simmons. He lost to low qualifier Denton in the first round, at the IHRA Cornplex Nitrous on May 17. The IHRA Springnationals at Bristol saw another non-qualifier. He ran at Epping on July 19 for the IHRA Northeast Nationals where a 7.18/195.77 qualified #11. A quicker-leaving Todd Tutterow beat him in the first round, with a 7.19/192 to Nabors' quicker 7.17/194.30. In August he was at the Nebraska Motorplex for the IHRA Mid America Nationals. He qualified #12 with a 7.16/194.13, but lost to Carlton Phillips in the first round, with an ailing 9.08/102.83. A best of 7.21/195.43 kept him out of the field on August 30 for the IHRA World Nationals at Norwalk. The time was only good for #5 alternate. Back at Darlington for the IHRA US Open on September 27, it took a 7.08 just to make the field and Tim's 7.07/202.61 qualified #13. He had the only Pro Stock that topped 200 mph and a first-round 7.29/203.16 (Top Speed) lost to Robert Patrick's 7.08/197. At the season ending IHRA Fallnationals, he again made the field with a 7.12/195.01, qualifying #11. He eased it through with an 8.46/116.56 in the first round, when Morris Johnson Jr. fouled, but Patrick's 7.09/195 beat his 7.18/193.71 in the second round.

Notes: Ewing qualified at Darlington for the IHRA Winternationals with a career-best (to this point) 7.37/187. He then ran 7.41/186 to beat Terry Walters and 7.43/186 over a fouling Pat Musi. A 7.44/186 advanced to the final in the semifinals when Roy Hill fouled away a 7.31/192. It was an all Camaro final where he met Darrell Alderman. Unfortunately for Billy, Alderman got the win in Jerry Haas' car. At Rockingham for the IHRA Pro-Am Championships, a 7.44/189.47 qualified #5. He beat Tom Sutton in the first round, with a 7.45/190.67. In the second round, his 7.49/181.81 lost to Tim Nabors' 7.46/189. At Bristol, for the IHRA Springnationals, Billy was a little off his usual pace as he "only" qualified #11 with a 7.62/182.18. In the opening round of eliminations, his 7.69/178.21 fell to Bob Glidden's 7.44/187.11. His next stop was at St. Louis for the IHRA Gateway Nationals. Ewing qualified #7, and he defeated Tim Nabors in the opening round. He lost to Alderman in round two. Milan, Michigan, was the next race on the IHRA tour for its Northern Nationals run on July 6. Ewing qualified #8 with a 7.52/186.72. Another 7.52 at 189.47 in the first round, stopped Terry Adams' 7.60/183. But he lost to eventual winner Glidden in round two. He ran well at Edgewater Park for the IHRA Summernationals. A 7.55/184 qualified #7. He beat Nabors in round one. Then he took out Hill's 7.57 with a quick-leaving 7.62 before fouling against Rickie Smith in the semifinal. He ran even better at Martin, Michigan, for the PHR Championships. His 7.48/184.42 qualified #2 behind Alderman's 7.45/183. An opening round 7.49/180.00 beat a tire shaking Neil Moyer. In round two, his 7.50/180.36 defeated Adams' 7.60/183. Alderman fouled against him in the semifinal, and Ewing advanced with a 7.56/180.00. He faced Smith in the final, and his 7.64/180.00 finished runner-up to Rickie's 7.58/184. Norwalk was the next stop for the IHRA World Nationals held on August 24. Billy qualified #5 but was upset in the first round, by Ed Dixon. No times were recorded in their race. Old car, former Johnny Dowey, Number 5 in IHRA. Listed times from The Drag Racing List, December 86/January 87, Volume 1, Number 9.

Notes: 1994 IHRA World Champion. Listed times from a match race. Huff qualified #1 at Bristol for the IHRA Fallnationals with a 6.90/201.74. He improved in round two, where his 6.88/201.56 defeated Mark Thomas. He then took out the Mopar of Larry O'Brien in the semifinal with a 6.94/201.16. He faced Roy Hill's T-Bird in the final, and Roy also ran 6.94 in his semifinal win, so the final was expected to be close. It sure was, both drivers ran 6.93 (Huff at 201.20), but Billy got to the stripe first.
