Notes: Ran 8.59/158 at Sacramento's New Year race. That's far quicker than the car ever ran in NHRA competition. Either the weather was absolutely perfect or the car was running at match race weight (or both)! |

Notes: Runs in A/FX and B/A also. Al was running his Vega in the four-car Pro Stock show at Sacramento's New Year's Day Race. In his first race, his 8.71/154.90 lost to Brad Yuill's 8.59/158. Lawson won his second race, running 8.81/154 as Mark Yuill got crossed up and shut down. We are assuming this was not at legal weight. Any confirmation? |

Notes: In August, Joe qualified #9 at Martin, Michigan, for the PHR Championships with an 8.98. That set up a first-round meeting with low qualifier Bob Glidden. The results were as expected; Glidden's 8.72/155 beat Gouger's 9.06/142.63. Former Rod Shop car purchased in 1976. The team won two UDRA championships. |

Notes: Qualified at first-ever IHRA Mountain Motor race at Darlington 1977 at 8.425/159.29, but was the first Pro Stock over 170 mph with a fantastic 8.20/171.00. IHRA Champion in 1977. Photo from 1977 IHRA Northern Nationals Milan MI. | This was the car to beat in IHRA's Mountain Motor Pro Stock class. If the car didn't break, he was tough to beat. At the season-opening IHRA Winternationals at Darlington, Lee qualified #3 in the eight-car field with an 8.42/159.29. In the opening round, he was still getting a handle on his combination and lost to Pat Musi. But by the time he got to Rockingham early in May for the IHRA Pro-Am Championships, he had things in hand. He qualified #1 with an 8.24/167.28, more than a tenth ahead of second qualifier John Brumley at 8.35/165. Edwards then ran 8.27/169.81 and 8.20/171.00 (Low ET and Top Speed) to advance to the semifinal. There he faced Roy Hill, and he was easily the favorite to win based on times, but the Vega lost an engine, and Hill went on to win. He also lost to Hill in the final at the IHRA Dixie Nationals in Atlanta. He was upset by Brumley in the first round, at the IHRA World Nationals. Lee qualified #1 at Bristol for the IHRA Springnationals with an 8.31 (Low ET) at 161. He then set Top Speed at 164.83 on his way to a semifinal meeting with Brumley. The race never came off as the Vega broke, and Brumley soloed into the final. Early in July, he was at Union Grove for the IHRA Summernationals. He called IHRA before the race and asked if his all-aluminum Yenko engine was legal to race. IHRA said that it was. So he showed up and set Low ET in qualifying #1 with an 8.38. Shortly after that, IHRA officials came to his pit and told him that he would not run that engine as it didn't carry a GM parts number. Rumors were that a Chrysler campaigner complained to IHRA. Lee was unable to run but was given first-round loser money. Not long after that, the engine was declared legal. Then Edwards went on a tear. He won the IHRA Northern Nationals in Milan. He set Low ET and Top Speed in qualifying #1 at 8.29/165.47. An opening round 8.31 beat Hill's 8.47, and an 8.35/163.04 beat Bob Glidden, whose Pinto broke at mid-track. He faced Musi in the final, and an 8.33/164.53 picked up the victory over Musi's 8.39/163. He then won the IHRA Nationals in August in Atlanta. He qualified #1 and ran 8.55/161.57 over a fouling Alfred Williams in round one. A second-round 8.42 beat Mike Dollar and an 8.40 in the semifinals beat Calvin Nabors. He set both Low ET and Top Speed in the final with an 8.33/162.74 to beat Brumley at 8.50/161. The wins continued as he went to Rockingham for the IHRA US Open Championships. Of course, he again qualified #1, this time with an 8.32. An opening round 8.35 stopped Gary Grimes, while an 8.37 in round two beat Nabors. He set Top Speed in the semifinals with an 8.29/167.59 over Harold Denton, but in the other semifinal race, Musi showed that he was tough competition for Edwards by winning with an 8.27 (Low ET). The two staged for the final, and Lee got out first. His 8.29/166 beat Musi's quicker 8.27/165 by inches for the win. At Atco for the IHRA Fallnationals, Musi out qualified Edwards, running an 8.21 for the pole while Lee followed with an 8.25. In the first round, Edwards beat Denton with an 8.32, and a semifinal 8.27 beat Sam Carroll. Hill upset Musi in the other semifinal race, and it was Mopar vs. Chevy in the final. GM prevailed as Edwards ran 8.29/168.85 (Top Speed) to stop Hill's 8.39/164. |

Notes: Ran as quick as 8.28 over an 8.34 by Dyno Don at MIR. We need to find out if he went quicker this year. | Bill was at Cayuga on June 1st for a best of three match against the "Gapp and Roush" Pinto. Jenkins won the match with a best of 8.40. On July 17, he was at Oswego, Illinois, where he got out of shape and crashed. He ended up with three cracked ribs due to the accident. |

Notes: Toured with two spare engines. Unique at the time. In September, Yowell was supposed to have a best of three match race against Bill Jenkins' car at Suffolk. But since Jenkins' driver, Larry Lombardo, had crashed and totaled their Monza at Indy, the team could not race at Suffolk. So Frank Iaconio took team Jenkins' place. It was no contest as Frank's Monza was NHRA legal and could only run an 8.65/156 best. Meanwhile, Bobby hoofed the Colt to 8.30/163, 8.34/162, and 8.33/163 to easily win the match. |

Notes: In July, Glidden was at Milan Dragway for the IHRA Northern Nationals. He qualified #4 in the eight-car field with an 8.40. An opening round 8.43 beat Joe Gouger, but in the semifinal, the Pinto broke at mid-track against eventual winner Lee Edwards. In August, he went to Martin, Michigan, for the PHR Championships which were being run under IHRA rules for the Pro Stock class. He ran steady 8.3s to win over the sixteen-car field. A first-round 8.30 (Low ET) beat Bill Robertson and an 8.32 in round two beat Henry Hallman. Another 8.32 in the semifinal beat Dave Avery and yet another 8.32/161.57 got the victory in the final over Bobby Yowell's 8.39/163. |

At Rockingham for the IHRA Pro-Am Championships, he qualified #3 with an 8.35/165.44. In the semifinals, he advanced to the finals when Ronnie Sox fouled. In the final, he faced Hill. Both ran 8.35, Hill at 166 and John at 165.44. Hill got the victory. John was also in the final at Bristol on June 19 for the IHRA Springnationals. He was driving a Camaro and he qualified it #3 with an 8.50. In the semifinals, he soloed with an 8.68, but in the final, he broke and slowed to a 29.66/32 that lost to Pat Musi. John grabbed a big win at Union Grove on July 4 for the IHRA Summernationals. He was driving his Monza here. A first-round 8.58/150.75 beat Joe Gouger's 8.83 and in the semifinals, his 8.55/161.57 advanced when Musi fouled away an 8.63/161. In the final, he ran Sox. Ronnie broke and Brumley cruised to an 8.54/160.71 for the title. He was still in the Monza on July 24 at Milan for the IHRA Northern Nationals. He qualified #5 in the eight-car field with an 8.42, forcing him to run low qualifier Musi in the first round. He lost that race when his Monza’s ailing 9.05 fell to Musi's 8.46. John got into another IHRA final on August 7 for the Nationals. He qualified #3 and beat Garry Grimes in the first round, with an 8.59. In round two, an 8.60 beat Sam Carroll and in the semifinal, Musi fouled away an 8.41/144 against him. John still ran an 8.52/160.14 to advance into the final. In the final, his 8.50/161.57 lost to Lee Edwards' Low ET and Top Speed of the meet shot of 8.33/162. |

Notes: UDRA Champ 1976. Photo from the 1977 IHRA Summernationals Union Grove, WI. | Frank writes: I was the driver & engine builder. This is the day we beat Joltin’ Joe Satmary in the final 8.89 to 8.92. This was 1976 and I won the UDRA championship with John's help! The following year, Big Jim Urso of Performance Auto Parts helped choose the parts for a new Mystery Motor BBC 492 which ran 8.60/159 with a lot of traction problems due to the power increase! Like at the Grove, I could leave the line at 1500 RPM & still run 8.63! If you raced with or new me, Frank Goetschel, I now live in Costa Rica Central America. I'm on Facebook. - From Quarter Mile Classics Smugmug site | Also 8.77 at Tri-City 1977. | Our friend Frank passed away on 5/15/20. RIP. |
