Notes: Cheek qualified #8 at Bristol for the IHRA Springnationals with a 6.84/203.65.GM and Ford were at war in the "Mountain Motored" war at this race; GM had the numbers. Only four Fords qualified, and Floyd's was the second quickest of the bunch. Three of the Ford drivers lost in round one, and Cheek was one of them. His 6.82/203.65 fell to David Jenkins' 6.87/202. At Maryland International, things evened up a bit when seven Fords qualified for the IHRA President's Cup Championships. Floyd was #7 overall with a 6.81/205.52, the fourth quickest Ford driver. In the opening round, his 6.84/202.73 beat Richie Stevens' 6.85/201. In round two, he beat Jon Yoak with a 6.85/202.73, and a semi-final 6.85 defeated Jenkins' 6.89. It was Ford vs. Chevy in the final as he faced Tim Nabors, and Cheek's 6.83/204.57 got the victory for the blue oval boys over Nabor's 6.93/200. The next race on the IHRA schedule was the IHRA Summernationals at Cordova Dragway in the first week of July. Cheek's 6.84/204.68 (Top Speed) was the quickest Ford and fourth overall. John Nobile shut down against him in round one, and his 6.86/203.57 advanced. In round two, his 6.89/202.65 beat Yoak's 6.96/200. The semi-finals featured two GMs against two Fords. Floyd was hoping to make it two wins in a row, but his late 6.88/203.02 lost to eventual winner Nabors' 6.91/201. He didn't have to wait long before scoring his next win, which came at the Mid-Michigan Motorplex in August. He had "only" qualified #11 for the IHRA Northern Nationals, but he ran quick enough to win. His 6.86/204 beat Nabors' 6.90/200 in round one. Then John Montecalvo fouled against him in round two. That also happened in the final, as Richie Stevens fouled away a 6.76/204 while Cheek coasted to 13.18/61 for the victory in the all-Ford final. Shortly after that, he was at Norwalk for the IHRA World Nationals. He qualified #1 with a 6.72/206.61, and he backed up the speed for a new IHRA record. He was heading towards another final round appearance, but he fouled against Tom Lee in the semi-final. |

Notes: Alesci qualified second at Bristol for the IHRA Sprinhgnationals. His 6.80/202.73 followed Billy Huff's 6.79/203. These two would reach the final. Angelo ran 6.82/202.73 in the opening round over Richie Stevens' 6.85/201, and he followed that up with a 6.83/203.65 in round two that beat John Konigshofer. He improved to 6.79/202.73 in the semi-final to take out Doug Kirk. Huff had problems in the final and shut down while Angelo cruised to the victory with a consistent 6.80/202.73. Shortly after that, he was at Maryland International for the President's Cup Championships. He set Low ET in qualifying low at 6.74/205.52. But his race ended in round one, where a broken brake line kept him from staging against John Montecalvo. In the first week of July, he was at Cordova Dragway for the IHRA Summernationals. Once again, he set Low ET in qualifying with a 6.80/200.44. He beat Bob Holzer in the first round with a 6.84/200.66, but the car had problems in round two and lost to Tim Nabors' 6.93/201. He qualified #1 again at the Mid-Michigan Motorplex for the IHRA Northern Nationals. Photo from the 1997 IHRA Northern Nationals, Mid-Michigan Motorplex, Stanton, Michigan. |

Notes: Yoak started the '97 IHRA season by breaking in the second round against Tim Nabors at Darlington for the Winternationals. His T-Bird was the quickest Ford qualifier at Bristol for the IHRA Springnationals with a 6.83/202.73. In the first round, his 6.87/203.65 lost to Steve Williford's 6.88/200.IHRA's next event was the President's Cup Championships held at Budd's Creek(Maryland International). Jon's 6.80/203.66 qualified second to Angelo Alesci's 6.74/205. In the opening round, his 6.85/203.65 defeated Mark Thomas' 6.94/200. But an off-pace 6.97/183.69 in round two fell to eventual winner Floyd Cheek's 6.85/202. Yoak then switched to a Ford Probe for the IHRA Summernationals held the first week of July at Cordova.First time out with the new car, his 6.87/201.61 qualified #12. In round one, he beat Tom Lee's 6.93/201 with a 6.96/197.84. But another 6.96 at 200.71 in the next round lost to Cheek's 6.89/202. In August, the schedule then moved to the Mid-Michigan Motorplex for the IHRA Northern Nationals. Yoak was the second quickest Ford qualifier and #8 overall with a 6.82/203.89. John Nobile fouled against him in the first round, and he advanced with a 6.88/202.97. In the second round, Yoak fouled against low qualifier Jerry Yeoman. Still, he earned points as he sat in the sixth spot in IHRA points. The teams returned to Bristol for the IHRA Autumn Nationals. Jon was the quickest Ford in the field at 6.85/203.16, but that was only good enough for #6 overall. He was late in the first round, and his 6.89/202.21 lost to Yeoman's 6.91/200. The cars were flying at Norwalk for the IHRA World Nationals. The race was supposed to be run in August, but the weather pushed it back to mid-September. Yoak qualified #6 at 6.75/205.76 (second quickest Ford), but a troubled, shut down 7.89/126.58 in the first round lost to Tony Gillig's 6.75/204. The season ended back where they had started, at Darlington for the IHRA Finals. Yoak qualified #7 at 6.75/205.01. In the first round, he fouled against David Jenkins. 1997 IHRA Northern Nationals, Stanton, MI. World Champ qualified 8th at 6.82/203.89 and defeated John Nobile on a holeshot in round one (photo). Redlighted to Jerry Yeoman in round two. |

Notes: Machacek had raced in Pro Stock since the early '80s. He had really been competitive in the late '90s. Then things picked up for him. He started the '97 season at Darlington for the IHRA Winternationals. He showed that the car was more than capable of running with the leaders by qualifying #3. A 6.72 easily advanced past the first round, and in round two, he beat Ron Miller. He took out Tim Nabors in the semi-final with a 6.78/203.94. This was Ed's second IHRA final-round appearance. He faced Richie Stevens in the final, and Ed had the advantage based on performance. Stevens' semi-final win came at 6.81, so Machacek also had lane choice for the final. But Ed ran his slowest pass of the day while Stevens ran his quickest, and the Ford driver's 6.79 got the win over Ed's 6.82. Ed qualified #14 at Bristol for the IHRA Springnationals with a 6.88/202.73. Another 6.88 at 200.92 in the first round lost to Tony Gillig's identical 6.88/202. Shortly after, he was at Maryland International for the IHRA President's Cup Championships. He qualified #13 at 6.84/203.66. But he slowed to 6.95/200.02 in the opening round and lost to John Konigshofer's 6.85/203. He was at Cordova for the IHRA Summernationals in the first week of July. His 6.89/200.71 qualified #14. In the first round, he and his opponent, Pete Berner, had run 6.90 (Ed at 201.16), but the win light came on in Berner's lane. He also qualified #14 at the IHRA Northern Nationals with a 6.85/202.65. The first round continued to give him a hard time, and his 6.86/201.70 lost to John Montecalvo's 6.87/202. Despite these first-round losses, he was still in ninth in IHRA points. Bristol was the next stop on the IHRA schedule for the Autumn Nationals. Ed qualified #13 at 6.88/201.97. That was still pretty good, as people thought the NHRA fields were tough; IHRA was pretty stout, too. His time was better than Nabors, Doug Kirk, and Steve Williford, among others. In round one, he upset Angelo Alesci's 6.87/202 with a quick-leaving 6.89/201.82. In round two, he continued to impress as both he and Montecalvo had run 6.93 (Ed at 201.04), but Machacek got the win. His ride ended in the semi-final, where low qualifier and eventual winner Tony Gillig's 6.85/202 beat his 6.92/201.01. He moved up to eighth in the points. Norwalk had been postponed due to rain, and the IHRA World Nationals were not run until mid-September. It took a 6.77 to make the show, and Ed just got in with his 6.77/204.26, qualifying #15. Once again, he had a close race where both drivers ran the same time. In the first round, he and David Jenkins both ran 6.79 (Machacek at 203.75), but he lost this one. |

Notes: John qualified #10 at Bristol for the IHRA Springnationals with a 6.87/204.57 (Top Speed of the meet). In the first round of eliminations, his 6.85/203.65 beat Tim Nabors' 6.90/200. In the second round, John had problems and shut down to a 9.57/90.73 loss to eventual winner Angelo Alesci. He followed the IHRA tour to Maryland for the President's Cup Championships, where he qualified #4 with a 6.81/203.66. In round one, his 6.85/203.65 beat Ed Machacek's 6.95/200, but once again, in round two, he shut off with problems, and his slowing 12.44 lost to Nabors' 6.95. The next IHRA event was the Summernationals held at Cordova Dragway in July. Konigshofer qualified #7 with a 6.85/204.45, but he had a close first-round race with Richie Stevens that saw his 6.89/203.52 lose to Richie's 6.87/201. In September, he was back at Bristol for the IHRA Autumn Nationals, where his 6.89/202.58 qualified on the "bump." In the opening round, his 6.91/202.21 lost to low qualifier Tony Gillig's 6.83/202. |

Notes: What other type of car would anyone with the last name "Jenkins" be driving? Jenkins had one of six Monte Carlos that qualified at Bristol for the IHRA Springnationals. His 6.87/201.82 got him the #9 spot in the field. In the opening round, he caught Floyd Cheek sleeping, and his 6.87/202.73 beat the Ford driver's quicker but later 6.82/203. In round two, another 6.87 at 202.73 lost to Billy Huff's 6.81/203. He qualified #3 at the IHRA President's Cup Championships held at Maryland International with a 6.80/204.59. Steve Williford fouled against him in round one, and he advanced with a 6.90/200.02. In the second round, Tom Lee's 7.01/201 fell to his 6.92/201.82. In the semi-final, he lost to eventual winner Cheek's 6.85 with a 6.89/202.73. |

Notes: 1997 IHRA Northern Nationals, Stanton, MI. Qualified #9 at 6.82/202.38. Redlighted in round one, to Jon Yoak for an early exit to the trailer. | John qualified on the "bump" at Bristol for the IHRA Springnationals with a 6.89/200.92. An opening round 6.90/202.73 lost to low qualifier Billy Huff's 6.81/203. Shortly after that, he was at Maryland International for the IHRA President's Cup Nationals. Unfortunately, he failed to qualify. Things went better at Cordova early in July for the IHRA Summernationals where his 6.88/200.84 qualified #13. But in round one, he had problems and shut off early in his race against Floyd Cheek. |

Notes: Pete was at Maryland International on June 22 for the President's Cup Championships. His 6.82/202.74 qualified #8. He was late off the line in the first round, and his 6.84/202.73 lost to Tim Nabors' 6.93/201. Shortly after that, he was at Cordova for the IHRA Summernationals.GM cars took the first three positions in qualifying, and he was third at 6.83/202.79. In round one, he and Ed Machacek both ran 6.90 (Berner at 200.93), but the win light came on in Pete's lane. The same thing happened in round two; both he and his opponent, Jerry Yeoman, ran 6.96 (Berner at 200.93). This time the light came on in Yeoman's lane. He qualified #4 at Mid-Michigan for the IHRA Northern Nationals, but he lost to Richie Stevens in the opening round. Notes: Roy Hill hired 18-year-old Richie Stevens to drive one of his Pro Stock T-Birds in '96. The "kid" could drive. His reaction times were among the best. He started the '97 season by winning IHRA's season-opening Winternationals at Darlington. He qualified #4 and ran well. In round two, he beat John Montecalvo with a 6.89/197.28 and a 6.81/202.65 in the semi-final defeated Steve Spiess. He went up against Ed Machacek in the final. Ed was running really well, going 6.7s in all three rounds of eliminations. But Ed fouled against Stevens in the final, and Richie's 6.79/202.88 got the victory. He did not run so well at Bristol for the IHRA Springnationals. He only qualified #15 with a 6.88/202.73. In the opening round, his 6.85/201.82 lost to eventual winner Angelo Alesci's 6.83/202. In June, he also lost in the first round at the IHRA Presidents Cup Championships held in Maryland. He qualified #10 at 6.83/201.83, but his 6.85/201.82 in the first round lost to Floyd Cheeks' 6.84/202. In the first week of July, he was at Cordova for the IHRA Summernationals. He qualified #10 again with a 6.86/200.04. But he beat John Konigshofer's 6.89/203 in round one with a 6.87/201.11. He and Tony Gillig both ran 6.91 in round two (Stevens at 199.51), but Richie got the win. He then had the "jump" on Jerry Yeoman in the semi-final that saw Stevens' 6.86/199.77 hang on to win over Yeoman's 6.85/202. This time he faced Tim Nabors in the final. Both had been running equal times, but Nabors ran 6.90/200 in the final to beat the T-Bird's 6.94/199.86. He surprised a lot of people at Norwalk for the IHRA World Nationals. He qualified on the "bump" for the sixteen-car field with a 6.77. But wouldn't you know it, he was in the winner's circle at the end of the race. His consistent 6.76 in the final beat Tom Lee's 6.78. Photo from the 1997 IHRA Northern Nats, Stanton, MI, where he qualified 13th at 6.84/202.11. Richie defeated Pete Berner with a 6.86/200 in Round 1, Doug Kirk with a 6.85/200, and Jerry Yeoman with a 6.82/201 to meet World Champ Floyd Cheek in the final. Stevens ran a 6.76/204 but red-lighted away the win. Cheek motored through at only 13.18/61 for the title. |

Notes: Steve was at Bristol in June for the IHRA Springnationals. He qualified #12 with a 6.87/201.82. In the opening round of eliminations, his 6.88/200.92 upset #5 qualifier Jon Yoak who lost with a slightly quicker 6.87/203. But in round two, Williford’s 6.89/201.82 lost to Jerry Yeoman's 6.82/202. Shortly after that, he was at Maryland International for the IHRA President's Cup Championships, where his 6.84/203.66 qualified #14. Unfortunately, he fouled against David Jenkins in the first round. He went to Cordova early in July for the IHRA Summernationals. A 6.86/199.68 qualified #9. In the first round, his 6.94/200.84 lost to eventual winner Tim Nabors' 6.89/201. |
